I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Dell Studio has just crashed and wont restart. The mute and volume up buttons are flashing and the volume down button is solidly lit. I could not find the diagnostic code when searching the internet. I could find pretty much every other diagnostic code apart from this one.

Any advice would be most welcome.

A:Dell Studio 1535 wont start. Blinking mute and volume up button, solid volume down button.

Hi Andy,
Welcome to Dell community!
As you have correctly pointed out, the diagnostic code that you have mentioned is not among the codes available to isolate the failure for a Studio 1535 laptop. The closest code is: blinking Mute LED and Volume up LED, and an off Volume down LED which is for USB controller initialization failure. Disconnect any external devices connected and try powering on the computer.
Reseating the memory modules too can help us. Please refer the following link for the Studio 1535 service manual for instructions: http://bit.ly/10PrLgH
If issue persists, the laptop’s motherboard has to be replaced. Refer the following link to check the computer’s warranty status: http://dell.to/10pMa86
If the computer has active warranty, please send me the service tag and registered owner’s name on the computer in a Private Message. To send me a Private Message, click my User name, and then click Start Conversation.
If the warranty on the computer has expired, you may contact our expired warranty services to purchase/replace the compatible parts. Please refer the following link that has contact details for our Expired Warranty Services: http://dell.to/14FoBtb

Hello. I'm usually pretty proficient in handling typical squirreliness with my computer but this one's a tough one for me to wrap my mind around. Here's my computer specs:

Windows XP
P4 2.8Ghz
nvidia 5200 vid card w/ 512MB RAM
Turte Beach Santa Cruz audio card
Seagate 160GB HD
NOD32 antivirus

Just recently I'd been gone to work and my girlfriend was at home on the computer. She usually goes on myspace, xanga, facebook a lot and generally doesn't stray far from those activities. I got home and she pointed out the computer was acting weird.

When I hit ctrl+alt+del, the screen just gets a light blue sheen over it until I click and then it's gone with no sign of the task manager. Also in firefox I cannot use the ctrl keys. The left ctrl key when pressed immediately makes the font size in the window larger and larger and after 2 or 3 presses opens a new tab in firefox. The right ctrl key yesterday was opening a new tab going to gmail and today is doing a variety of things including going back a page and copying text to pages. I can't use any ctrl key combinations in any software without it doing something strange. In Azureus it opens a file's statistics for example. I'm a key command junkie so this is a huge problem and I don't know if my computer's been compromised or what.

I've tried running virus scans on nod32, using spybot search and destroy, reinstalling my keyboard drivers, upgrading to firefox 2, updat... Read more

My Yoga 13 volume up/volume down buttons (hardware buttons on the side of the unit) were working fine for a few weeks and then all of sudden decided to invert themselves (i.e., in laptop mode, pushing the button closer to me would make volume go UP and pushing the button further away from me would make the volume go DOWN).  Same thing in tablet (landscape orientation with camera on top) and stand modes - pushing the upper button made volume go down and vice versa.  The only time the volume buttons would work logically is in tent mode where pushing the upper button made the volume go up and pushing the lower button made the volume go down (but only by happenstance because the unit is "inverted" and the volume buttons happen to be inverted as well).  I don't recall if these buttons automatically switched orientation when the unit is rotated, but now it's always fixed in the up is down and down is up position in 3 out of 4 modes. Minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless on an expensive new laptop.  Any idea on a fix?

A:Yoga 13 Volume Up Button and Volume Down Button inverted bug/problem

I was about to write back with a snarky email about how the volume button is fixed in one position and the orientation makes most sense in tablet mode and that to expect any more was crazy. I was going to argue how this is no different than any tablet which can be used in reverse landscape mode - the volume control is backwards. I was just about to point you to the manual where I was sure that it would state that the button closest to the front of the keyboard is volume down up.... But then I read page 8 of the User Guide: http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/user_guides/yoga13_ug_en.pdf Where it clearly labels the volume buttons back to front. So I dont' know. I give up. Your guess is as good as mine. Though orientation specific volume controls might be useful (I bet it would just add to the confusion).

This on is quite perplexing to me. This is stemming from a volume problem that I had posted before. I have more detail and have narrowed down the problem but not the cause of such. When ever I click the volume control in winamp, not adjust necessarily, just click, my wave setting in my volume control (pannel that comes up by double clicking the speaker in the tray) drops. Of course this affects my overall volume. It is sparatic and does not drop the same amount two times in a row but will drop everytime I click volume in winamp. I am running winXP pro and have not installed so much as an update since the last time this was happening. The only thing I did change is I set up voice recognition in Office XP but I was having this problem before that. I have uninstalled and cleaned out all winamp files and reinstalled. Any suggestions? Winamp is the only player of any kind that this currently happens with.

Also, whenever I am using winamp to play an mp3 or streaming audio and I open another program, any program, or even just minimize/maximize a window, the audio starts cracking. This also has never happend before except of course when there is a heavy load on the system. As I said I am running XP pro, and FYI a Duron 900 cpu and 448MB RAM. As I am having these problems I am using 5% to 10% of my cpu and have 21000k physical memory availible according to task mgr.

A:When clicking volume in WinAmp my wave setting in Volume Ctrl drops.

I did some research at the Winamp message board and came up with this.

hi, i found this weird behaviour on my keyboard recently and it's really starting to annoy me.

when i press the ctrl key any browser im using would go to the homepage.

i've tried pressing the ctrl key on my on-screen keyboard but it does not make the browser go to homepage so im thinking maybe my keyboard is broken. i also tried to look at the computer management and tried to scan for hardware changes but it always say that driver failed to install. maybe that's it? i also tried managing keyboard and language in control panel but the only installed keyboard is the one im using right now.

im at wits end. can anyone help?

A:ctrl key makes any browser go to homepage

what a surprise. my favorite key combination actually does not work. what happens is, i can press the 3 keys, but the only thing that comes up is the little tray icon with a full green bar showing it's using 100 percent of the processor (it's xp by the way). when i move my mouse over it, it disappears. i've seen that happen before, like when i COULD use ctrl+alt+delete to close a program that froze, like kazaa. when i moved my mouse over the tray icon for kazaa, it dissappeared. so i'm guessing that it opens, but then closes without closing the right way and clearing the tray like it is supposed to....

and the REGISTRY can almost never make any changes. it can read for my currently installed programs, but will not accept changes by any other means. so that means i can't install anything. if i had to reinstall windwows, would i be able to? would i be able to install backup software to backup my pictures, music, etc? if i did have to reinstall, it would be a format.

i also did a spyware check (which i did before the registry screwed up). bought some stuff from tz(trackzapper). seemed to lessen the pop-ups, but it seems to have lessened windows' function.
anyone know what happened?
oh yea, sry about the colors, i wanted to see if it really worked..:D

A:can not makes changes to registry; ctrl+alt+delete does not work

Not that this is going to help any, but lately there seems to be an epidemic of people with Kazaa having major problems and viruses. Something to think about...

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

Hello yall, I'm having a very annoying issue with this now. I noticed that the Ctrl+Alt+B key does something to the volume, it seems to toggle it between two states, one of which is louder and one of which is way softer (that's about as specific as I can get) which is quite annoying because I'm using this series of keys for a different purpose. I tried searching the internet but found absolutely nothing on this - any help?

Windows 7 32bit new install of 2 weeks. No changes that I can think of prior to the login problem.

Windows boots to Ctrl Alt Del and when that is entered a Cancel button appears on the screen. when the cancel button is pressed the Ctrl Alt Del is back.

I have tried the follow to fix the login issue.
Remote Registry connection to create a AutoLogon by adding (DefaultName/Password/Domain) etc. That registry hack worked in that the Ctrl Alt Del window no longer came up but it then went directly to the Cancel button.

Next I tried doing a restore to an earlier date by booting from a Win7 DVD. Results were NO Change.

Then I tried doing a boot repair booting from the Win7 DVD. (and as the problem isn't with the boot, it is with the logon there was NO Change)

Does anyone know a Registry Hack that will remove that Cancle button? Or has anyone come accross this before. There are a couple of other mentions of this problem on Google Search but NO answers.

As all of us that are tech in this business know finding the answer to this problem is really important because you know it is going to happen to one of your clients someday. Our quest must be to find the answer not to just format and reinstall.

Thank you for your help....

I received our first X1 Tablet this week and have found an issue related to this device's lack of a hardware Windows Button.  My organization's standard group policy enforces CTRL-ALT-DEL at login. When working in tablet mode (without the hardware keyboard connected), there doesn't seem to be a way to get past the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen. On previous tablet devices, like the Lenovo Helix 2, you would simultaneously press the Power + Windows Button to replicate the CTRL-ALT-DEL entry.   I've tried pressing Power + the volume control keys (since those are the only other hardware buttons), but that doesn't do anything.  Apparently Microsoft uses Power + Volume-up on the Surface Pro 4 in order to solve this issue. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this other than disabling the security standard requirement?  Does Lenovo have a driver or firmware update that can be installed to make the volume controls perform this task, like the Surface Pro 4 does?

I have an HP Pavilion Desktop model n850. It is about 3 years old. I can use the ctrl button to choose items on a list like email in Outlook. Example, if I have 10 emails, I can use the ctrl button to pick 1,3,8. I can also use the ctrl button on my desktop to highlight the icons that I want to move or delete. The problem is when I am accessing a website with data base information. For example, a website that lists all 50 states and asks you to chose any 5 by using the ctrl button. I can pick 1 but when I try to pick another by holding the ctrl button and trying to highlight with a left click of the mouse, it doesn't work. what it does do is launch IE. I have tried several different websites and the result is the same. Can anyone help?

Hey all, recently pressing my CTRL button began to open Microsoft Outlook, which was extremely disruptive because many video games I play make extensive use of that button and when I press CTRL it minimizes the current program to display outlook. If I press CTRL again, it returns me to MS outlook from whatever app was running. If I press CTRL like 10 times or so over the course of an evening and I go to close outlook, it will re-open 10 times before it closes for good. I don't really use MS office much anyway and I thought I had the CD laying around for a reinstall so I removed MS office, and now when I press CTRL I get a small dialog box saying :

Windows cannot find C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE Make sure you typed the file name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

A new box will open every time I press CTRL and I'm not sure if I somehow bound CTRL to run outlook (??) or if this was a result of some malware. I previously had a malicious program that would run calc.exe every time I pressed the ALT button so I think these 2 things might be related, but I am not sure how to go about fixing this problem. You guys do excellent work for everyone and I was wondering if maybe you had some advice ?

A:Ctrl Button Hooked?

Windows is trying to load Outlook.exe but cannot locate it. You removed the file but there is still a regsitry entry that is telling Windows to to load it when you start up. When Windows loads, it looks for any files associated with registry entries for programs that are set to run at startup. If the file was removed/deleted but not the associated registry entry, Windows will display an error message indicating that the file was not found. You need to remove the related registry entry so Windows stops searching for these programs when it loads. That can usually be resolved using msconfig. However, since you said you had a malicious program that affected calc.exe, you may not have removed the entire infection or there may be other malware present. Lets have a deeper look as to what's going on with your system by creating a hijackthis log. So I was on my dad's windows 8 Hp dts Sound+ laptop. I spilt a little bit of tea on it (the tea had milk in if if that matters or not) and it wasn't more that a tablespoon. So I wiped it up immediately. The computer was working fine for about an hour and then all of a sudden it wouldn't let me type anything. I did some research and I'm assuming it has something to do with the Ctrl button being stuck... At least that's what the computer thinks. I took the keys off where I'd spilt the tea and it wasn't sticky and there wasn't any residue left. I also tried pressing the Ctrl + Shift buttons simultaneously, as well as holding the Ctrl down for a few seconds (I did the same with the Shift key, I also pressed it 5 times) BUT NOTHING WORKS! I tried blowing out any debris and I cleaned the keyboard and I tried Ctrl + Alt + Delete... I don't know what to do. The computer acts like I'm holding the Ctrl button down, for example:
N = Opening a new window
F = Find
W = Closing the current window

When I try to scroll, it zooms in or out! I restarted the computer multiple times and tried turning off the Sticky Keys (Which wasn't even on in the first place) Nothing seems to work for me and none of the answers online fully relate to my issue. Oh and there's more. The laptop is a touch screen so I tried using the touch screen keyboard, and it does the exact same thing. The only key that actually types something is the "K" ke... Read more

First, a little bit about my laptop. Its a Toshiba P205D with Window's Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 32 bit.

And now, the problem: In the past month, I've noticed that when I try to adjust my volume (at least by the volume wheel) it makes my Window's Taskbar freeze up and stop working. If I click on it I get the "This program has stopped working, would you like to restart it, close it, or wait for it to respond?" message. If I do any of the three, it doesn't fix the problem. The taskbar closes, reloads, and I still can't adjust my volume. The only way to get it working again, is to go somewhere like youtube and watch a video, that somehow kicks my sound adjustment back into gear, and lets me adjust the volume. (After I do that, its fine.)

I've had this computer for about 4 years now, and this has never happened to me before. If anyone know's what can be causing this, or how to fix it, that'd be great. I'm hoping that reformating isn't the only answer because I did that just a couple months ago, and I'm still installing programs and window's updates to this day, so I'd rather not have to do that again.

Any answers would be great, thanks.

This one has got me loopy for the last month.
Changed out all components (except Intel Proc), but still persists. Tried different OS's (Vista to XP back to Vista - back to XP).

Problem - Whenever I move the volume slide bar from 0-100, the right / left channel levels move at the same time and seems to be no correlation. Sometimes goes all the way to the right, sometimes goes all the way to the left. Also, the Volume bar is not smooth, it will jump to 100, then to 0 then to 100 etc. and I cannot control with the mouse or keyboard.
In order for me to have any stereo sound, I have to move the volume bar to 100% and then just use the volume knob on my speakers.
All drivers are updated, even tried rolling back drivers on all components - didn't help.
Because of this, there is also a crackling - popping noise when I try to watch video on my PC, but only with Windows Media. If I watch DVD with Nero, there is no popping noise, but the volume is still wacky.
At this point, I am considering buying a new machine, but I don't like not knowing why this is - it's a principle thing now!

Hoping someone else has seen / resolved this and I hope it's something simple I am overlooking.

This happened on occasion in XP also, but now on my new Laptop with Win7 I see it happening again. Every now and again for some reason I cannot select random files (in a file handler) by holding down the CRTL key and selecting desired files with the left mouse button.

Also sometimes the SHIFT key will not let me select the first and last files for a group selection.

And then again on another boot up they both work again until some unknown combination of events messes it up again.

Hello everyone! I have having a problem with the power button in the start menu...and I'm sure it's tied to a problem I'm having when I hit ctrl-alt-delete. First, the power button...I only have three options when I click it: log off, switch user, or lock. I cannot restart and I cannot shut down. Similarly, when I hit a ctrl-alt-delete, the only option that comes up is "switch user"...which means I can't start task manager. I'm guessing this has something to do with user rights and privileges...but I'm the only user and I have administrator rights! I've search all over for a solution and I cannot find one. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

This is my first posting, although i have used some threads in the past to fix problems. may i just start by saying i really appreciate all the help offered on this site by the volunteers. you are providing a great service to all of us with limited computer skills.

here i s my problem:

i just restarted because photoshop would not open. upon logging in, my taskbar is now grey (no open programs show up on it), the start button is missing, and many of my desktop icons have a funky "bitmapp-ish" look top them. Task manager will not open, and when i try to download any programs (like adaware, or links at kelly's korner) the download window flashed for a milisecond and then disappears. i just started using this computer a month or so ago, and had not installed any of the spyware yet, and since i can't download anything now, i could not follow the procedures before posting this. i can't run any of the other apps that require using "run", because i can't get to it (no start button). when i press the "window" key, it does not bring up the start menu, only a very short menu with "xp safety and comfort guide", etc.

i am running windows xp professional on a hp compaq (can't give more specifics because when i choose properties for my computer, it does not show the usual info page)

As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. I don't know what I did to cause this or how something like this could even happen, but I am hoping someone here might be able to explain and provide a fix. I have tried multiple fixes provided on the net, but none of hem seem to be working.

Currently, on my start menu, the power button icon that used to be there that I could press to show me options like sleep, shutdown, and restart just disappeared, and I can't figure out how to bring it back.

Also, when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the menu is just completely gone!

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Does it have something to do with the registry?

I have attached images that illustrate my problem.

Thanks in advance!

Process of elimination. Try uninstalling Google toolbar, reboot, and then test again.

I've just purchased HP Spectre x360 laptop, Canadian version that has a bilingual keyboard. What I didn't realize from the specifications posted online is that the right CTRL button is replaced with a button for | and \ which is just a duplicate of an existing button. My guess is that it is for extra characters when using the French layout. I don't use it however, and would much prefer to use it as a regular right CTRL button (it's much easier to use CTRL-arrow shortcuts with the CTRL that is located right next to the arrow buttons).  I've changed the keyboard and language settings to US English, no luck. Tried KeyTweaks and it doesn't appear to help either - it does the remap, I reboot, the button still works as |\. Is there a way to restore this button to its original functionality? Thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 installed.

In Google search box, when I type Ctrl+Z( for undo), it does NOT work. Neither does Ctrl+Y( for redo). When I type Ctrl+backspace for deleting the preceding word, it works perfectly, but when I type Ctrl+Delete to delete the following word, it does NOT work at all. Kindly help me out of this problem.

In Notepad, Ctrl+Z( undo) works but Ctrl+Y(redo) does not. Neither does Ctrl+backspace(to delete the preceding word) but Ctrl+Delete(to delete the following word) works perfectly.

I don't know why some shortcut keys work and some don't. Please tell me how to make all these shortcut keys work in Google search box as well as in Notepad.

Yours sincerely
Babu Kumar

I have a DELL XPS laptop that makes beeping sounds and the screen is still black after I pressed the power button.
It makes 5 beeping sounds per interval and goes on until it shuts itself down. What should I do and who should I contact to help me fix my laptop?

A:My Laptop Makes Beep sound when I press power button and it wont Start

Hi AhLong
Thanks for writing to us.
5 beeps usually means CMOS failure, now it could be the battery failure or the motherboard failure. If your system is under warranty we can get it repaired or else you can check with a local Dell authorized repair center and get it checked.
You can try another CMOS battery if available.
Do provide us your system tag#, email address and name via private message.

I have Inspiron N5010 suddenly makes continuous Beep sound when press power on with black screen and not Start

A:My inspiron 5010 makes continuous beep sound when I press power button and it wont Start

If it's a continuous single beep, it means the mainboard is bad.  If it's some other pattern such as four beeps - pause - four, etc., post the sequence and someone can help you interpret the error.

Hello, for quite a while now, I have been having this issue where the volume button increases to the maximim on its on. Once it does that, the music player appears on the upper left corner and it's not able to close down. Simultaneously, the keyboard clicker stops working. So I have to start using my laptop as a tablet. Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?

A:Flex 15 Volume Button malfunction

I have a FLEX 15 and similar issue is cropping up on my machine. The volume control is stuck on the left top corner of the screen and I have done everything possible to remove it but nothing has worked. Its distorted the touch screen functionality too. I cant seem to get the windows 8 or 8.1 to click on the left bottom to switch between tiles and desktop. The finger swipe bar that appears from the right on windows 8  snd 8.1 will appear using a finger but only the mouse can select them, finger actions dont work. I have reset the PC using windows 8 and 8.1 functionality but this volume bar is not going away.

I have a HP Pavillion 11 x 360PC with Beats Audio which has a keyboard and touch-screen. The keyboard has stopped working along with the volume button and all controls not operated by the touch screen, however the touch screen does work. How can I fix this? Thank you.

Hi, The 'up' volume button on the side of my laptop (Pavilion x360) seems to be stuck. I tried pressing the button and restarting my laptop in hope to fix it but it didn't work at all. I thought it was a problem with the RealTek Audio installed to my laptop. I tried countless ways to fix RealTek audio, but that also didn't work. So there is probably a physical problem. On my laptop, there is three ways to change the volume. The button on the keyboard, the button on the side of my laptop and the speaker icon on the screen. There was no problem with the volume buttons on the keyboard and there is no problem with RealTek Audio. I found out that the side volume button is jammed. What can I do to fix it?This is the button that I think is jammed              ^^^

I just recently got my computer. When it came, the buttons on the side of my laptop that adjust volume used to work. Now they don't. Anyone know what I might have done to disable them or something?

Hi guys, I've recently come across an extremely annoying problem that I cannot find an answer to, hence why I'm posting here. There's actually two problems, but I have a feeling they're both linked. Anyway...

The first problem I have is with my volume buttons. Usually I'd be able to control my laptops volume by using these buttons (volume up, volume down and mute), but they've suddenly stopped working. I've done a few Google and forum searches and the majority of people put it down to having the wrong drivers installed. So over I go (time and time again) to the HP website, search for my laptop model, download and install the drivers, but to no avail. The only time I can get these buttons to work is when I run QuickPlay - every other time I try and use them they don't work. Any tips or advice on this would be great!

The second problem I have is with my sound. Sound from programs such as MSN and iTunes work fine, but sound from YouTube, SkySports video player etc don't work for some silly reason. I can see the video fine, there is just no sound. Another thing I've noticed is the Windows start-up/shutdown sounds don't work either. Again, any tips or advice on this would be lovely

Finally, the laptop I have is a HP Pavilion DV5000 which is running Windows XP Home Edition. Hope this helps!
