Acer Laptop XP system - crashed.

Q: Acer Laptop XP system - crashed.

I am self taught on a Vista laptop over the past 5 years. Last year I was given an Acer 1640Z laptop which has the XP OS, and have kept it up to date for a relative. Today I pressed the wrong button which started to wipe the XP. I switched off immediately, however, I now cannot get it to boot up, or even boot from a Macrium Reflect rescue DVD. The message on screen is that the file is missing or corrupt,i.e.- Windows root\system 32\hal.dll

It looks like any remedy will be too technical for me (70yrs )

DO NOT THINK I have posted this in the incorrect forum, why I am posting here is the Acer laptop has an official sticker on it, quoting " Designed for Windows XP - Windows Vista Capable."

The question is can I convert the Acer from XP to Vista, since I still have the disks which came with the Dell Vista laptop when I bought it new ?

Hoping for some positive guidance in ths matter.

Preferred Solution: Acer Laptop XP system - crashed.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Acer Laptop XP system - crashed.

That error is a bad one to get because it indicates very low level corruption. You will have to reinstall XP. The hard drive will probably have to be reformatted. You can't use a copy of Vista that came with a dell on an Acer so unless you can find a retail copy of Vista you are stuck with XP or Linux. By now it will be too late to get the Vista disks from Acer but you can try.

Hello, at first I have to say I dont use the english version of windows vista, so I will following error messages translate as good as I can.
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 4935g with windows vista. I dont know if its either 64 or 32 bit because that is one of the problems.
I can neither open the computer specifics by rightclicking on computer -> open nor open the networkcenter by start menu -> network -> networkcenter. when I try to open these windows, a window pops up with the title windows-explorer and directly closes.
additionally the wlan doesnt work.
so, what happened?
i shutted the laptop down and closed it.
next day, when I have opened the laptop, it seemed to be switched on all night long, because i hitted a key and it was on. a programm by acer opened, it seems to install something, but very quick. as it has finished there was written, windows continues. and it continued by showing the login screen of windows. i clicked on my profile, but I didnt exist anymore. restart in safety mode and restart again in normal mode. it worked. but, like i have written before, some things dont work. for example the usercontrolpanel. the same like computer specifics and networkcenter.
the last information which i have, are two errors poping up at desktop after start. both are runtime errors from acer stuff.

both have the title Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library.

underneath it stands Thi... Read more

Do you have a virus scan / firewall program installed? If so, run it. If not, download AVG 9 Free or Avast Free and run them. Could be a Virus/Trojan/Malware problem.

Also download and run Malwarebytes here http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and run.

Hey folks, thanks a ton in advance for any help or suggestions given. I guess my old account was deleted, but I previously joined/donated for some help received. Regardless, I have a friends Acer laptop I am attempting to help her restore as usable. Acer Aspire 6930Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)1244MB Mobile Graphics Accelerator 4500MHD3 GB DDR2320GB HDDWindows VistaWhen you boot it, it pretty much stays in the boot screen.....does no more. She got the computer from Best Buy, and they set up 3 recover disks. When you try to run the 1st of 3, I select the language....then a prompt comes up to ask me what I want to do. As you can see below, I cannot select "restore from backup". I then click to "restore to default" and then I get this error message......I searched the error message, and found others who've experienced the exact same issue. What they discovered is that the computer would not utilize the recovery disks if there was an existing partition. So the folks with the same problem as I, downloaded the Ultimate Boot Disk to recover their computers. When I do that, I got a message in BIOS saying "No operating system found".This whole message....I can follow directions very well, and I am a fairly familiar with computers....but not enough to solve this one. I appreciate anyones time thrown in to try and find a fix or a final resolution (if the HD is fubar). Darren

Please help, this computer has the research for a thesis and it is very crucial to school.

A:Acer Laptop wont start operating system now!!!!

Aparently you have tried to make the laptop as dry as possible, but things can still be fried inside it. I am afraid the latter is the case and that you will have to opt for a waranty claim, although water damage usually isn't covered in that.

To recover the data I suggest to remove the harddisk and put it in or connect it to another laptop... but bottomline is that I think your laptop is lost :-(

My Lenovo T60 crashed and was not able to be repaired. I do not know what caused my laptop to crash, but according to the PC Tech, the hard drive was reformatted. To be honest, I am here in the Philippines and did not bring my recovery disks with me & I am not so sure about the technical ability of the PC Tech.

That being said, he installed Windows XP Professional on my laptop and partitioned my hard drive. I have a 250 GB Western Digital HD. Before my laptop crashed, the drive was NOT partitioned. After the installation, I now have two drives, C, with 40 GB and D, with about 200 GB.

I lost a lot of photos and music, and other important documents. I decided to try to recover some of these files and used Recuva. The good news is that a lot of missing documents can be recovered. While listing the files and looking at them, I noticed that I had several System Restore points that I can recover.

My question is, can I use the most recent System Restore point that I recover and use that to reinstall all the missing software? I had MS Office 2007 Professional, MS Visio 2007, MS Project 2007, and other software that I do not have the installation disks with me.

From what I have read, System Restore will reinstall the system (registry, files, and software only) and not the My Documents folder.

If this can work, where do I put the system restore file? If need be, I can delete the new partition and resize the C partition, restore, and then repartition the hard drive afterwards.

A:Can I use a recovered System Restore point file to restore missing sw crashed laptop?

Since you already lost everything, try the System restore but first backup everything Recuva found onto a USB key. If your version Windows was not the same what the tech installed, it might not work. Also, he should have first ask you what to do with your files before formatting.
Otherwise you will have to wait till you can re-install everything.

Could use help on this one. I am trying to fix my buddies Acer Aspire 5735 and I get past the main password and get into the utilities screen and receive a system password. I have tried for over an hour different passwords but to no avail. I tried to just get into the boot menu which i can. But every option available starts up and then restarts the computer. None work not safe mode enable boot log restore system services last known config nothing. I tried running a vista recovery disc wont load. I tried to run a new installation disc nothing. I even called Acer tech support and they said they dont put them passwords on their machine and a program had too.

Any suggestion what I can do or what could be causing this issue?

Thank you Ray

Ok, so earlier today i decided that i needed to restore my laptop to factory default. As you can see from the title, i use an acer laptop which means i used the acer Erecovery software. All went well at first, although it took a stangely long time at a screen which said "setup is starting." The problem now is, I am now stuck on the acer 'software installation screen!' It is stuck at 41/48 where it is trying to install clear.fi v1.0. I think i heard the sound of an error earlier which worries me as i dont want to force restart my laptop as it clearly says not to do that and doing this caused my hard-drive to break last time!
I have been on this screen for about 2 hours now, and will leave it overnight if i have to. I just need to know what to do if it does not fix!

Have you categorically rejected the idea of doing a clean install, as opposed to a recovery to factory specs via the Acer software?

Acer software and support being what it is, I'm not surprised by your predicament and don't have a solution to that other than to wait as long as you can stand to see if it sobers up.

I was hoping that someone may be able to provide some advice re a small problem I have. Since my laptop died and I've rebuilt it. The time is not correct on it. When I power on the laptop the time is wrong and I then reset it to the correct time. If I leave it on for a few hours it seems to lose time if this makes sense. I believe the CMOS battery controls the time when the laptop is switched off and this could be the problem, but I thought that once the system was fired up the time was controlled by the operating system. Is this correct?

Also if it's the CMOS battery that needs replacing is there anyway of knowing this is the issue before dismantling. Problem is that the location of this battery requires full dismantling and reassembly. Typical manufactures they put the CMOS battery in the most inaccessible place on my laptop.

Would anything other than the CMOS battery be responsible for this isue, could it be a virus or anything along these lines..

Any advice appreciated...

A:System running win7 losing time on my Acer 8930G laptop

No; actually that is where you are wrong. The CMOS battery keeps the date and time in tact at all times no matter whether the computer is on or off. The operating system just allows it to use the internet to check and set the time correctly. There probably is no virus; just the battery needs replacing. Which should be pretty simple. I believe you have to take off the top case to get to the system board and locate the cmos battery.

all show type: File size: 0 bytes ..Boot (X:) has files but it won't boot from that drive.

I have tried several programs I have found searching for help none have worked. What file has the drivers. I have seen a lot of download's for this subject that don't work. I hope someone has the solution for me.

Hey guys,
I have been having this problem for a long time now. I have done my research and the solutions that other people had didn't really seem to work for me. I have tried reinstallling the display driver, formatting the computer, updating the driver, i even bought a new ATI display driver. If you guys can help me it will really be appreciated. Okay so this is what exactly happens. I would be using my computer normally then it would freeze up, the screen would go black. Sometimes it would go to a BSOD and i have to restart, sometimes it doesnt come back, and sometimes it does comeback. When it does comeback a little message pops up saying "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" It is really Starting to annoy me.

From what you've described, you've done all the testing/replacement that we would have done.
In that case it's most likely that there's a problem with your motherboard and how it handles graphics.
I'd suggest a new motherboard, but that'll set you back around $100 (US) and there's no guarantee that this is the problem. If you do purchase a new mobo, be sure that you can return it for your money back if it doesn't work.

Good luck!

I failed in updating the BIOS as per Acer's instructions, and now I have a bricked PC.

I'm trying to restore the original BIOS, but not having any luck. The PC boots, I hear two beeps - one short one long, and then it hangs. The power cycles to the devices & the fan, but it doesn't do anything. I tried it with the BIOS jumpers set both at 1-2 and 2-3. No luck.

What are the key strokes I need to press to force BIOS reset? Or am I toast with this MB?

A:Acer Aspire X1301 BIOS update crashed

Hello gerry and welcome . Mate how old is the machine mate? cos if you have bricked it as you think you have you maybe up for a new one but.....

The other thing is why did you try updating the BIOS? and was this the one you tried updating from Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents - Desktop / Aspire / Aspire X1301

There are plenty of Googles for that problem and from what I have come across two beeps usually refers to some things in the RAM here are some refs
Computer POST and beep codes

What I would try myself first is to remove the battery lave it for a good hour or so - I have had some IBM jobs that required longer - replace with a new one, reseat the RAM and try again.

I'll keep scratching round in the meantime. Found this if it is of any help but I still think the battery change will narrow it down a bit

I believe my desktop crashed. I know the monitor and the other hardware works. I hooked my monitor to my laptop and it works fine so does my mouse and keyboard. Before my Desktop computer stop working the monitor would say "no signal" and the keyboard and mouse would not light up. This happened several times before it finally crashed. I would have to reboot. Just before the crash, I could not update my antivirus software and the color was odd looking then the screen flashed something about a crash and that was the last time it came on. It was once recognizing the key board and the mouse, but now it does not recognize any hardware. It never did recognize the monitor after the crash. The monitor says "no signal." hi all,

my win 7 pc crapped out. its not the disk. i have an image made on acronis. i bought a new win 10 pc. whats the easiest way to get that win 7 image with all my applications onto the new win 10 desktop? i want to get rid of windows 10. i would like my image working on new pc (new hardware) as i will not have to reinstall and configure everything again.

i tried swapping the old pc disk into the new pc, but the new pc would not boot: says invalid disk. could it have something to do with the MBR or that UEFI thing?

A:System crashed, how to restore Windows7 system image into new desktop

you're going to be in a world of pain if you want to do this but have no access to the old computer. In this situation, a SYSPREP with the generalize function is run in Windows 7 to prepare it for migration to new hardware.

You can try cold turkey like you did, you may have to switch to AHCI drivers from IDE or IDE to AHCI depending on what you had before to get it to boot. The boot sector may be a problem too. If you used standard MBR in the past then check your BIOS on the new PC to see what adjustment you can make.

Hello. It's the second time when I come here.
First I had this problem - https://forums.techguy.org/threads/my-laptop-wont-boot-from-usb.1173499/
and now it got worse.
I don't know what happened to my Acer Aspire ES 14 (ES1-431-C8JZ). (I haven't dropped it or something like that)
When I turn it on, it stucks on Acer logo screen, and then I can't do anything.
I tried to restart it, same problem.
I tried to enter BIOS, Boot Manager, nothing works.
Then I disassembled it, reset bios, and again, nothing worked.
I made a bootable USB - Slax, I tought Linux could fix this, but it doesn't work. It doesn't boot. I tried to remove the hard drive so I can boot with Slax like this (I've heard about this feature of slax - to boot even without hard drive) but it won't pass the Acer logo.
It would be great if someone can tell me where is the problem or how to fix it. Thank you.

Did you ever solve your previous thread?

It's possible that your hard drive is faulty, and it can't boot into Windows because of that.
I don't have any experience with Linux, so I can't confirm if Slax allows you to boot without a hard drive installed.

Do you have any spare hard drives lying around? If not, consider purchasing a low capacity one, installing Windows on it, and trying to boot then. If it still won't boot, then you didn't spend much money on the hard drive, and it'll narrow down your issue a little more.

Worst case scenario is there's something wrong with your motherboard (as per your other thread involving your USB ports).

I think that I wiped out some registry files prior to rebooting. Now can not access system, not even open BIOS setup.
Put Win xp pro disc in and rebooted many times, pushing DEL to open BIOS setup, but can not. Only comes up motherboard flash screen.

I really screwed up and have no idea how to access BIOS setup. This is a work machine so in a tight spot.

Any suggestions would be great!

A:My XP.system have been crashed

From the Advanced Options Menu choose Disable automatic restart on system failure instead of Safe Mode.
Post the lines under the Technical Information section, the Stop code and any file names it mentions.

Do you know which updates you were installing?
If you were installing the KB977165 update, and have the version before MS added code to check for the presence of a rootkit, that could be the cause. Installing the update on an infected system causes blue screens or restarts.

Check the Windows partition for this folder:
If present, check in the spuninst subfolder for the spuninst.txt file

The spuninst.txt file contains the commands that the Recovery Console would use to uninstall the update. It's a list of Delete and Copy commands to delete the new files, and restore the old version. The last command makes a copy of the spuninst.txt file named spuninst.tag so that Windows Update will know it's been removed.

You can do each command from Ubuntu if you don't have an XP CD.
If you have access to a Vista/Win 7 DVD or can download one of the Vista/Win 7 Recovery Environment CDs, I have a batch file that can uninstall the update as well.

Vista Recovery Environment CD
64 bit Vista
32 bit Vista
Win 7 Recovery Environment CD

Hello I recently installed suse on my computer and I also have windows xp installed on a seperate partition. Since I am an idiot I was on windows xp and I decided to delete the suse partition trough windows. After I deleted the suse partition, I restarted windows and like ususal it said Grub loading, but I got an error because obviously suse is no longer there, so I put in the win xp disc and tried to repair windows. I thought if I deleted the 956 mb swap partition it would correct the system from trying to load Grub, but it actually made things worse and now I cannot even load the windows xp disc. Now when I try to load the xp disc it says inspecting system configuration then the screen goes blank.........I dont know what to do! Help!

Don't know if you have a xp boot disk but if you do you should be able to copy the NTldr file from that to the root windows folder.

First off, thanks to everyone ahead of time for helping me!

Alright, so I just moved to a new house and hooked my computer up to the internet for the first time on the new IP. I was on for just a few minutes when I got a "Send error report" saying that "the system has recovered from a serious error". When I go to click anything, I get the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!! Now it happens everytime within a couple of minutes when I load my desktop. Now I don't really think it has anything to do with a different IP or anything like that, but I've been messing around with other forums for days now and still haven't been able to fix this problem so I decided to jump in the forums and post my own thread and just hope I can get this fixed.

A:My system crashed, please help!

Hopefully the computer wasn't dropped when you moved from house to house. Also hopefully the computer was packed up right and didn't get banged around inside the truck or whatsover.

One thing you can do is to check the HDD for any errors. Go to the manufacturer's website of the hard-drive and download the latest diagnostics utility. Then put the program onto a CD, boot the computer to the CD, and test HDD for any errors. If there are any errors, then it's time to backup your files ASAP.

Another thing you can do is to perform a windows repair on your computer and hopefully windows repair will fix the problem.

Also try reseating computer parts. Reseat the videocard, cpu, and memory sticks and make sure they are on the motherboard tight.

You can also perform a check disk repair. Go into my computer and right click on the C: drive. Then choose properties and then click on the tools menu. Click on "check now" on the error-checking section and then make sure the two boxes are checked. Click on start and reboot your computer and let check repair do it's thing.

I was working with my "backup" computer.......Win XP SP2 and ran an AVG scan.......anti-rootkits. I removed 5, and one was fixed. Later on I shut down the computer when a storm came through, and about an hour ago powered it back up. Windows will NOT boot up. It continued to recycle, and I am unable to get into SAFE mode, nor will it boot with the last known good settings. I tried "debugging mode", "disable automatic restart on system failure", and "safe mode with networking" (out of desperation), but nothing's working. I do not have a recovery disc, but I do have the OS re-installation disc that came with the computer, plus the SP2 disc I got from Microsoft. What's my next step? Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

If you did a full reinstall then the new OS may have deleted all of your files.

How did you go about upgrading from Home Premium to Ultimate?

I am running vista on an acer laptop. Last night it crashed. When i turn it on a black screen with safe mode options pops up. I tried that but it starts to load and nothing happens after that. I don't mind if i can't recover any files because all i really had on there was pictures and music.

If there are any tips that could help me out to get my computer up and running again, please let me know.

Early today my computer was perfect, then came the disater, I was informed that I needed to install SP1 (vista service pack 1). I did so, and towards the end of the process, it crashed my system, I mean a total, complete crash. There is no windows, no prompt, no curser, just a black screen. No matter how many times I turn my compter on and off, the same black screen is looking back at me. The microsoft website is not helping, they want to charge me to fix a problem caused by their system (dont get me wrong, happy to pay for service). Is there any way I can restore my system without inserting the start up disks again.

Added: While waiting for a reply I have decided that I would have to start over. However, my computer will not even read the discs to start over, there is just nothing. Just black. (3 years ago, I had to start over, it was simple,I just put the manufacturer disks in my disk drive, started the computer, and it wiped everything and started again). Any suggestions would be so much appreciated.

A:SP1 just crashed my system

are you using a PC or laptop? When you turn the PC off then back on, do you see the POST screen, i.e. the manufacturer's logo and/or a series of checks denoted by white text on a black screen?

It could be that the PC isn't fully turning off and you're going straight back to the screen you're seeing. If that's the case, remove the power lead from the PC after turning off (or remove the laptop battery), wait 10 seconds then reconnect and power on.

My laptop crashed, system 32 not found/corrupted, i bought a boot cd ( not realising i had one supplied with the laptop). The bought disc then reloaded xp pro, so no files, no office programs. When i did find the right disc and press f8 on start up i have 3 windows xps to choose from bottom is the corrupted one middle is the clean version and an incomplete one. When i load the correct boot cd it states i do not have enough ram memory, can i delete the top 2 xps? I just want to get back to the corrupted version and give the original boot cd another try.
