Computer wont "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and L-Alt Key makes computer go into standby mode

Q: Computer wont "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and L-Alt Key makes computer go into standby mode

My computer is behaving strangely there are no noticed performance changes but if i press "Ctrl + R-Alt" then my computer beeps and wont allow delete to work. I had to take out the L-Alt Key because if i press it my computer turns off and then when i turn it back on (with the power button on the case) its as if it where never turned off, it just goes straight to the login screen. Another strange thing is that if the Ctrl Key is held down for a few seconds the "e -key" gives a ? instead of E and when this "Euro-Mode" is active the arrow keys dont work. This problem is anoying, i can still open task manager through "start -> run -> taskmgr" The computer only beeps when i press ctrl+alt no other 2 keys make my comp beep.I hope someone can help me, I've already tried using avg spybot, Ad-aware and various other proggies but the problem perisists.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 12:41:04 PM, on 24/05/2009Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWService.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Service\AdskScSrv.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exeC:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DefWatch.exeC:\Program Files\GIGABYTE\EnergySaver\GSvr.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\InCD\InCDsrv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXEC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\PnkBstrA.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgnsx.exeC:\WINDOWS\RTHDCPL.EXEC:\Program Files\CyberLink\Shared Files\RichVideo.exeC:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\RUNDLL32.EXEC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exeC:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exeC:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exeC:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\InCD\NBHGui.exeC:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exeC:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSRMon.exeC:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exeC:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWTray.exeC:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exeC:\Program Files\Vtune\TBPanel.exeC:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exeC:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exeC:\Program Files\Spybot - Preferred Solution: Computer wont "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and L-Alt Key makes computer go into standby mode

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

i think there may also be a suspicious program called Pev.exe aswell===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible.Thank you for understanding.Orange Blossom ~ forum moderator

Well, today when I woke up I tried starting my computer, but it started making beeping noises and the light on the expansion bay started flashing. I looked up the problem, and found it it's beep code. The beeps my computer is making is as follows:
short, short, long
short, short, long
short, short, long
short, short, long
short, short, long

There is a one second interval in between each set. I went to the HP site and found this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07107#N1010 . However, I'm not sure if it applies to my BIOS or not. I have a HP Pavilion Media Center m8120n TV PC, 3GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 7350 LE Graphics Card, and about 500GB of HDD space, and an Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600.

I tried looking for the specific BIOS on my computer, but couldn't find it. So I can only assume what they say is my problem is what it actually is. Which is that my computer was "Unable to initialize video or video card required but not installed". This computer is about 4 years old, and I have never changed the card, and have not updated the drivers for several months. How can I fix this problem? I read on other forums where people where having problems with their RAM they had to try putting it into a different slot, however, I'm not sure if my computer has multiple PCI-E slots to do this. Furthermore, If I do have to do something similar, I have no means of grounding myself. Would it be okay if ... Read more

A:Computer makes beeping noises on start, computer wont run

Do you have any display at all?

If not, then it's probably certain that the beep code is correct; that your video chip needs butter (because it's toast).

Does it have a video card installed? If so, pull it, and see if you can get display through the native video output. If it is without a video card, go to a local shop, and see if they have on old one, compatible with your system, that you can use to test with. If it tests good, you probably need to buy a video card...

If your computer is disconnected, you can probably get away without any grounding strap. Nothing in life is guaranteed tho'.

what a surprise. my favorite key combination actually does not work. what happens is, i can press the 3 keys, but the only thing that comes up is the little tray icon with a full green bar showing it's using 100 percent of the processor (it's xp by the way). when i move my mouse over it, it disappears. i've seen that happen before, like when i COULD use ctrl+alt+delete to close a program that froze, like kazaa. when i moved my mouse over the tray icon for kazaa, it dissappeared. so i'm guessing that it opens, but then closes without closing the right way and clearing the tray like it is supposed to....

and the REGISTRY can almost never make any changes. it can read for my currently installed programs, but will not accept changes by any other means. so that means i can't install anything. if i had to reinstall windwows, would i be able to? would i be able to install backup software to backup my pictures, music, etc? if i did have to reinstall, it would be a format.

i also did a spyware check (which i did before the registry screwed up). bought some stuff from tz(trackzapper). seemed to lessen the pop-ups, but it seems to have lessened windows' function.
anyone know what happened?
oh yea, sry about the colors, i wanted to see if it really worked..:D

This morning, my computer froze up while I was playing Second Life, and I hit ctrl-alt-delete three consecutive times. My computer immediately turned off with no warning or apparent shutdown processes. Since then, I have been unable to turn my computer back on.
We have concluded that it's not a power supply issue. We've unplugged the computer, and left it sit for twenty minutes, but nothing happened after we plugged it back in.
Sometimes when we press the power button, we'll get a blue light for a second, but other than that, no apparent activity. Any suggestions or ideas on what the problem could be, or how to fix it?

This happened to me once and i restored (xp) back to a previous date. It worked fine then. But now its happening again about 3 weeks later (now). I even completely reformated my comp cuz i had other issues i still have to resolve http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic37170.html. I read somewhere that maybe a virus might not be letting me standby/hibernate (never tried) but i fully schecked my hdd with norton antivirus 2005 and ms antispyware beta 1. No results. I dont understand that even with default windows system configs it wont standby. The first day i reformated it didnt even work so its not like i installed somthing that might not let it standby.

specs are in the above posted link

thank you for any help, much appreciated.

Hi all,

Situation: Windows XP SP2 on an Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe motherboard, 2x80 GB SATA disks, running VGA and network from onboard devices.

I was thinking, let's try the standby mode, but after selecting Start, Shutdown, Standby mode my computer shut down right away. The next day, I was switching my computer on by the power button, but nothing happens! I only see my CDROM's inititializing but nothing on my screen, not even a BIOS beginning!

Anyone any idea about this big problem?

A:computer dead after standby mode

What happens when you use a boot floppy?

Some computers won't allow you to use Standby mode, particularly those with onboard graphics - the VGA drivers don't support Power Management.

Try removing the motherboard battery for about 20 minutes to clear the CMOS.

I'm using a dell inspiron 1520 laptop with windows xp. Recently, I was working on my computer normally when it decided to go into standby mode by itself. The laptop was plugged into an AC outlet so it wasn't the battery. Also, when I re-login, the laptop usually lasts about 5-10 minutes before it goes back into standby mode on its own. There are also periods of time where the laptop can run fine for hours at a time. I've switched all of the power options to never for standby mode but I still experienced the same problem. I don't think its an overheating problem either because the fan seems to be working and it does not feel that hot. Also, sometimes the computer comes out of standby mode and I can here windows working in the background but the monitor remains black. Usually, the monitor remains black in these cases for about 3 minutes before it randomly comes on and allows me to see the usual windows background. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FWIW: I understand that there is some relationship between such problems and video drivers. I would try to uninstall the video drivers...then reinstall them.

For some reason my computer won't enter standby mode on its own. Most of the time it won't start a screen saver either. I have it programmed to start the screen saver after 3 minutes and to enter standby mode after 15 minutes. However, I'll come back an hour later only to find that the battery has been completely drained. Anyone know why my computer won't enter standby mode or start its screen saver?

My HP Pavilion 6370Z used to go into and out of standby mode nicely. Suddenly it goes to sleep OK, but instantly pops out again. I can't connect this up with any particular software installation or other change. One day after rebooting it worked OK, but the next time I booted up, it was back to the problem again.

Any ideas,

A:Computer pops right out of standby mode

Some network cards have a WOL (Wake on Lan) option. This is an option that allows remote access to your computer.
If your computer is on, in stand-by, sleep, or hybernate it was designed for you to access your computer remotely.
Not saying this is true, but if you have an always connected access to the internet such as DSL or Cable you could be getting hits to wake up. I would make sure, if you have constant on access to the internet you get a good firewall. Also you can physically disable the WOL by removing the WOL jumper on your network card.

Hi. Im not really good with computers to start off with, just so you know. I tried erasing a bunch of files that my spyware program said were malicious recently. Then I added another spyware program to catch what the first was missing. I did all of this because I could not get my computer back into standby. It just stopped working out of the blue and I read on some tech forum that it could be from a virus. Finally I read a thread telling me to go into the power options, then click on a different option such as hibernate, or do nothing, then click apply, and save. After doing this it said go back into power options and reselect standby-apply-save and it should work. Well it did... For a few days. Now it has gone back to not going into standby and I have to shut the tower off every time I leave the house. I dont know what could have caused it this time, if it was from before still, or if my husband did something he shouldnt have or what. I tried to to the steps above that helped the first time but it isnt helping on bit this time. Im trying so hard to keep this computer working well as Im not so great with computers and we cant afford someone to fix it. I could really use the help. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. If you could dumb it down to the most basic step by step process I would be so very grateful!!!! Thanks!

My computer when put into standby or let go into standby has trouble coming out of it.
This only recently happened. It worked fine a week ago.
Sometimes it will come out of it and somtimes it wont.
Sometimes when i press the button it auto restarts.
It seems if i put it to sleep then wait a few then press the button
it works fine, but if I wait a long time it wont. What happens when it wont...
The fans power up, the keyboard blinks on for a second and then turns off, the hard drive
light comes on and stays solid for about 30 sec. then turns off
completely with no blinks and the moniter stays in sleep mode.
If it stays that way the mouse and keyboard will stay off.
I then have to push the reset button. I have a 3.6ghz pros, P5ND2-SLI MB,
BFG 7800 gtx oc 256 GC, 80 gig sata 7200 rpm HD, WIN XP Sp2,
2 GB RAM DDR2 PC2-5300 667 mhz 240 pin unbuff memory.
I had an error message one time only saying i need to run a ram scan from microsaoft at boot up.
I did and it found no errors. Just dont know what it could be

My friend gave me his computer (Windows XP SP3) to fix. When I got it, he told me that it would boot up and then ask for a password (though he had never put a password on his computer) saying that the computer was locked down.

When Ifinally started to work on it, the computer would boot past the win logo with the progress bar underneath it and go to a blank screen (black) with a cursor. I tried ctrl-alt-delete, tried to hit it twice, no dice.

Next I put the computer into safe mode, again, same problem, this time a black screen with text saying safe mode in four corners. Again, ctrl-alt-delete wouldn't work.

Right now I'm scanning the computer for viruses using a the AVG live disk, but it would be really helpful if i could actually get back into the system. Is there a way I re-enable ctrl-alt-delete from a live disk? I don't have the actual Windows XP install CD, but I do have a boot-legged one I made that can only go into the recovery console. I also have many other different types of Live CDs. Any suggestions?

A:Ctrl-Alt-Delete Disabled and Computer Boots to a Black Screen

The problem here isn't that ctrl-alt-delete has been disabled, but that the system doesn't reach a state where it is able to respond to it. This may be be caused by a damaged installation, or it may be caused by a hardware problem, such a the hard disk.

Without the installation media, or the ability to recover from a recovery partition, your options are somewhat limited. If it will run from a live CD this would eliminate most hardware problems. You could run chkdsk from the recovery console but this isn't really conclusive. A better option would be a utility from the drive manufacturer. A thorough memory test would also be in order.

About a month a go I installed kapersky anti-virus software as my norton trial had run out. 30 days have now gone and i found that i never had no antivirus software so i decided to download some free stuff online (avast) and (mcafee). To my horror i have noticed that although i can download this programmes, I am still unable to run them. I feel that an virus is preventing me to have antivirus software on my laptop and its really frustrating me!

I also was told by someone to download MalwareBytes (which i did). I run a full scan and was informed that i had 500 and something files that were infected (registry). When it came to me deleting these through the programme it was fine but there was 11 infected files that the programme was unable to delete and i think these are the files that are responisible for me not being able to download antivirus software on my laptop.

Additional info is:
When I browse on the internet and decide to click on a link from google, I sometimes get the message 'document moving' and it directs me to a suspiscious website.

My operating system is also windows vista.

Any help on how to get rid of these 11 infected files would be much appreciated!

Thanks x

EDIT: For anyone surfing on this issue and arriving here, be advised I've decided simply that the ancient motherboard in this computer simply did not work reliably with my SSD and so I've abandoned the effort.
I'd love if someone here would help me out. This PC does not reliably go into S3 standby, such that while a WOL or keystroke will wake it, this means only that it powers-up but does not start the monitor nor show the keyboard LEDs resetting with Numlock ON as normal. I have to hit reset or power off/on and the I get a startup screen that says it didn't shut down cleanly and usually I Start Windows Normally and it boots fine. Later I do diskchecks and have never had any serious corruptions.

I tried S1 mode, where it seems to work reliably, and after setting BIOS to S3 again on Thursday afternoon it's worked fine i.e. go into Standby, wake automatically for backup to WHS2011 Server, sleep again, a couple of wake/sleeps yesterday by me, and this morning it awakened for Backup fine, and I awakened it from Standby after Backup fine, but then I put it to sleep with AFAIK the standard Windows API (via control gadget) and I got a bad start again about a half hour ago. This is a typical scenario, where it works some times but not (maddeningly) others, and I can't find the "why not".

What is most peculiar to me about these instances is that the System Log never records anything at the time it actually went into Standby--there are no status or error messages, ... Read more

Storport.sys is the generic storage port driver. It is not the actual cause of the BSOD, but it indicates about the storage controller elements of the chipset.

Your SATA/AHCI controller is the element of the nvidia nforce chipset. Which is too old.

About nforce updates, what I see that nvidia is pretty out of the market of chipsets, nforce is almost obsolete nowadays. There is not a big scope of update to it.

Still, search for any possible Chipset/BIOS update for your MSI MS-7380. If you get any, apply it.

Please be aware that the BIOS update process is risky. If you dont have any prior experience with it, dont do it yourself. Take assistance of anybody who knows. (I am not aware of your skill levels. So please dont take this word otherwise.).

I'm in a real mess since Lavasoft AdAware crashed my windows 7 home premium edit. 64bit after its 1st initial mandatory reboot. Everything is frozen, nothing can be clicked on or done in any way, shape or form. Even 'Esc' and 'Ctrl-Alt-Del wont work. PC must be shutdown manually. It also wont uninstall in safe mode. Once in safe mode the 1st time I got windows telling me that it cant uninstall this software in safe mode (this was done by its own uninstaller, and by the windows one, and by the Revo Pro uninstaller.) the 2nd time (reboot) it told me it wasnt installed properly. the 3d time it can't install in safe mode again. What now please? Anyone have an idea?

Thank you

A:Lavasoft AdAware crashed win7-Ctrl-alt-del wont work & it wont uninstall in safe mode

Sorry solved it. I'll write the answer should anyone need it someday. I believe my solution can help for other similar cases besides Ad-Aware.
A minute after I posted this a thought came to mind: Go into safe Mode and use msconfig.exe. So I ran it and unchecked everything to do with Ad-Aware. TO be even more sure I checked off not to run also other things that I knew would not be needed like anything to do with Apple, or Adobe. Afterwhich, doing a proper reboot Windows did actually start normally--no crash and I was able to uninstall it. Slowly I put back other services and start-up items and all is working fine now--so far at least ;-) Thanks for those who took a look and I hope it will help some people in the future.

When my computer comes back from sleep mode, it intermitently makes a whooshing sound. Is this the drive spinning up? It only happens after coming back from sleep mode. If the computer never goes into sleep mode, the problem doesn't occur. Is this something serious or should I just live with it?
Michael Doherty

A:Computer makes whoosing sound after coming back from sleep mode

It will probably be both the drives and the cooling fans combined, in which case that's normal unless it's only recently started making that noise even though you've been using sleep mode previously and the noise did not occur on wake-up.

Provided everything is working okay and you are getting no BSODs or other crashes, all will be normal.

A:Computer wont boot, wont boot in safe mode, wont load repair centre

Hello there,
It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.
Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:
1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.
4. Accept the Windows license agreement.
5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.
6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.
7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

No matter what option i pick in the safe mode list, the computer will not start. when i choose any of the safe modes, (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc) the computer displays a list of random commands (i dont understand any of it) and then restarts. If I try to Start Windows Normally, or use last settings that worked, it seems to start loading, and then restarts.

Any ideas?
