I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi folks,
I wanted to post the fact that Dell sold me a faulty laptop in July last and I had a complete nightmare gaining a refund.  I had to fight for over 28 x days to have my money returned and in the end I requested my Credit Card provider to resolve the matter legally.
I was also lied to on many occasions by the staff Gian, Vishka and Shahank who repeatedly promised me manager call-backs and also that the courier was en-route to collect the faulty item.   I was asked to please be patient to allow them to resolve the matter asap (which I was) and my gesture was completely throwm back in my face on multiple occasions.  I am still waiting for the Senior Manager call-back I was promised TEN DAYS ago, although now the situation has gone to far for any kind of amicable resolution.
I shall NEVER purchase from Dell ever again as it is totally criminal of them to retain a customers money.  I have probably spent at least 20 x hours on the phone before I managed to make any headway with the situation.  I have been a Dell loyal customer since 2011 and this would have been the third PC I purchased from them.  Therefore, it is utterly abysmal for them to treat me (or anyone!) like this.
I am considering posting a copy of the entire dialogue here (as well as other computer forums/sales-reviews) online as it is quite unbelievable.  I only wish I had recorded the phone conversations.
Yes, I was provided with some compensation (which I do appreciate), ho... Read more

I am very concerned. My laptop is consistently taking forever to start and/or freezing. Is it possible to uninstall anything dell related? Or how do I fix it? I am no expert here, but it looks like the Update service is looking for a Recovery partition which may hold the WinRE tools.  On my current system, that would be partition 4 but it could be different on yours.  Running the command below in an administrative command prompt should show what partition is configured for the Tools.
reagentc /info
Have you made any changes to your drive configuration?  The reagentc info should show the same partition the Update Utility is looking for.

I Purchased this Laptop few years back. Now it stopped working suddenly. Am in India right now but when i consulted the Dell Exclusive store here they say its not repairable. Kindly suggest. I never fell down nor got damaged by any external source. I wanted to get it repaired or may be send it back to recycling if possible.

A:Service Tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> || DELL Inspiron 14z 5423 || Laptop Dead

We cannot assist without knowing  why the shop said it's not repairable.
How old is "a few years"?  Any system more than three years old likely isn't worth a major repair such as a replacement system board -- even if a board is available.

This is a low-end system -- if it requires a mainboard change, it's likely not worth the repair, as the shop has told you.

A:Are Dell Laptop Service Tags Unique?

Dell D620 password

According to Dell and verified by a technician I know, every Service Tag is unique. It does not seem possible for a password to unlock more than one machine.
It is possible to render your laptop useless if you short the wrong pins. A better solution would be to post your Service Tag (from the "gray screen of doom.") It should look somthing like XXXXXXX-XXXX, where the X could be alpha or numeric. With that information a person with a master p/w generator could post the one you need.

I sent my laptop for repairs as there was an issue with the WiFi connectivity. It was supposed to be returned to me in 15 business days, but it was returned after a month and a half. When i received my laptop, the operating system installed wasn't the correct version and I also did not have the product key for the same (Since the version was different than the previously installed one, the product key in MSDM  was different  and did not work). On contacting customer care, i was transferred from one department to another and their final solution was to have me send the laptop back to their service center. This was after 4-5 hours on the phone with the customer care and after having to explain my problems around 9-10 times. I just received my laptop after a month and half and i have to send it again!! What kind of customer service is this!!!! Installing a legitimate version of Windows(which i have paid for) is common sense!
Customer service is supposed to resolve issues, not introduce new ones. This is extremely irritating .I have tried being patient for over a month.I have been extremely inconvenienced due to this.I am a student and I am behind on my work due to such issues.
Looks like Dell does not want to retain its customers!

Just to be clear, the two issues stated in the title are related. (I read the rules and guidelines )

Last weekend, my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop suddenly couldn't connect to the internet. I looked around every corner of the computer, checking to see if anything was corrupted/broken, and I found that the DHCP Client Service and DNS Client Service cannot start (Error 1608, the dependency service or group failed to start). The DHCP Client depends on AFD. NetBios over Tcpip (already started, so that's a green), and TCP/IP Protocol Driver. However, I cannot find the AFD service anywhere in Services, and the TCP/IP Protocol driver has a yellow exclamation mark next to it, same with the IP Network Address Translator driver. Their device status is Code 24 (This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.), and when I try to start the IP Translator driver, it says "The system encountered the following error while attempting to start the service - The dependency service or group failed to start.". The TCP/IP driver gives me a slightly different error, "The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion". Going back to regedit and looking in the Tcpip folder, the DependOnService data says IPSec. There's no IPSec folder in regedit, anywhere! The closest thing I've got is in Services, the IPSEC Services entry. I try to start it (it's not running, by the way), and it gives me &q... Read more

If you can boot into safe mode with networking...then install and run the programs below.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.

Can I install WinXP Pro from older Dell laptop on to new Dell laptop?

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8200 right now and in order to save some money on my new Dell laptop, I'd like to order Home or MediaCenter with the new computer and then install WinXP Pro myself instead of paying the extra $119 to have them do it. I have a Reinstallation CD of WinXP Pro that came with the old Dell laptop; will I be able to use it to install WinXP Pro on my new one?

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

A:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

1. Disclaimer: I am very computer-ignorant (probably shouldn't even be attempting to use one).

2. A friend of mine just gave me a Dell laptop (used) that has XP on it.

3. It worked fine for 2 or 3 days, and then a window popped up that said something like "Automatic Update" to install something called "Service Pack 3."

4. After it was done doing its thing, it said to restart it, which I did. After XP loaded, it went to the login/password screen, but the touchpad wouldn't work, and the keyboard wouldn't work either.

5. I tried starting it up with an external mouse and keyboard attached through the USB ports, but they wouldn't work either.

6. I called Microsoft tech support and they ultimately told me to contact Dell technical support, and that they would mail me a disk of some sort that might help.

7. I called Dell tech support and they want to charge me $60 for 30 days of tech support since the machine is out of its warranty period. I'm hesitant to pay it, not knowing if they can actually help me out.

8. I read up a bit on several internet forums, and saw several suggestions to hit F8 and select "safe mode." I did this, but the same problem occurs in safe mode - the keys & mouse won't work. I also tried selecting "Last Known Good Configuration" and still had the same issue. My Dell Inspiron laptop's hard disk failed to start, so I had it replaced under warranty  by Dell support technician.  (I noticed they've done a sloppy job because a few screws were missing from under the laptop and I could hear something like a little screw loose inside the laptop, unfortunately I discovered that after I had sign the papers and had no way to prove it was their fault so I let it go).
Then the monitor had lines appearing across the screen, so I had it repaired  again under warranty by Dell support technician.
This time they replaced motherboard, and monitor.
The laptop turned on and passed all the BIOS tests, so I had to sign the papers and thought everything was ok.
Then I did a fresh clean install of Windows 8 with the original Dell USB recovery media. everything booted up fine, even wifi.
Downloaded latest drivers from dell.com and proceeded to install them.
As soon as I installed Intel HD Graphics 4600, the screen went black and after rebooting, it went black again as soon as Windows booted.
and so began my endless trial and tribulations to get this laptop fixed...

Hi everyone
Got a bit of a problem which I need help on please:

The screen has gone blank but works on an external monitor, this only started to happen after I let my son use my laptop, he and his friends have connected their iPads etc for films and music...but strangely, sometimes it comes on without any problem when I boot up as normal, so it is still working, this has happened on other occasions I am sure it can be rectified but I don't have a clue really. See below for what I have tried so far:

1. Checked monitor display - it shows the external monitor as the primary display only and I can't seem to get it to display the laptop monitor.

2. Checked the internet for possible solutions but could not properly understand everything to rectify the problem.

3. Could it possibly be anything to do with the amount of memory that has beenused up? (my son has used most of it for his music & films etc.)

Just to say thanks for the answer to my previous question but here's a new one:

My Dell laptop just died. I am computer illiterate so all I know is how to get the harddrive out of my dead laptop. The reason I need it is that I did not backup my info so I need to transfer it to the new laptop. I am not sure if I am supposed to take out the harddrive on the new laptop and replace it with this old one so that I can back up the data and then switch the harddrives. Or hopefully if there is a way that I can back up my older harddrive externally without having to put it inside my laptop?

A:Dell laptop harddrive...can I use it externally to another laptop?

Since it won't boot in a different machine, putting in the other laptop won't do you any good. Look for an external case with a USB connection so you can use it is an external backup drive after you empty it.

I bought a Dell Xps 15 last year from the Dell Canada website and recently noticed that my trackpad was raised above its original resting point, an issue which has been reported on this forum before.
I called customer support about it but well my warranty ran out a few months ago. When I brought up the issue of the trackpad, the agent said that Dell needed to replace the trackpad. However I had looked online about this issue and found multiple post attributing this issue to the battery swelling. However, the agent told me the battery of the Dell xps model I had was under the keyboard, and would not cause issues with the trackpad. I reiterated what I saw online, also stating that there were answers on the dell forums approved by moderators which stated the issue was battery swelling.
The agent persisted in saying how they somehow had a different model, but said that Dell could also replace the battery for me if I sent it to them. This operation would cost me around 400-500 CAD (don't remember exact number).
At this point, I was starting to believe him because he is after all a worker for Dell and the xps line should be a flagship line where they have good knowledge of the laptop. He said that if the battery was swelling, the bottom portion of the screen would also swell, which I observed is not the case. As such I thought it was just an issue with the trackpad, and decided to let it go, since I wasn't about to go spend 500$ to repair a still functional trackpad. What h... Read more

The accused me of locking myself out and that is not covered.  That might be true, but I did not lock myself out because I got back in, but when it went to screensave/sleep I had the same problem.  the Rep said I have a very serious software problem and it would still be $59.95 to diagnose a two day old computer with NOTHING saved to it yet (I use the cloud).  You think they would have just told me to start the recovery process, but they want the cash first, then they will remotly do that.   Well, I have been using computers since the 70's and I just thought HP would help me out, but noooo.  I finally had to just hangup because they rep was getting a bit frantic in his attempts to collect a fee.  I proceeded toi do the work myself Needless to say this, but I am finished with HP.  Buyer beware, don't fall for the "tier two" help for a Windows 10 machine under warrenty!

A:Older Dell laptop, have lost my administrative password for a Dell inspiring 1545, can anyone help me??

If it's the powerup password, you'll need to place a voice phone call to Dell -- be prepared to verify your ownership details and with a credit card (the call post-warranty as a system this old must be, is not free of charge).

It could be any number of things but my first 2 guesses are possibly the hard drive or motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere so that you will get a correct diagnosis.

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

A:[SOLVED] Dell inspiron 1500 laptop freezes after DELL loading screen

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

I wanted to buy a new laptop and found out about Dell 5577 on the internet. I wanted to know more about it. So in the evening, I went to nearby official Dell Store in Swastik Plaza, Vasant Vihar, Thane(W).

Over there, I met Sandeep Kanade, who is the customer representative at the store. He showed me a Dell 5577 which was on display. I tried it out for a few minutes.

The laptop was good but the display looked somewhat off. The colors were not vibrant and picture quality looked dull.

Before going to the store, I had read on the internet that recent Dell laptops have TN displays with poor screen quality. An alternative to TN is IPS display which has much better display quality.

So while I was trying out the on-display Dell 5577 laptop, I asked Sandeep if this display is IPS or TN. To which he replied that its an IPS display. Then I asked the price of the laptop. He said its 85,000 Rs.

Then I asked, what if there is an issue with laptop in first few days? He said that if there is any issue with the laptop, within the first week of purchase, he will replace it.

I told him that I will come by next morning to do the payment.

I went to the store to ask about EMI options. Over there, I again asked Sandeep, if the screen is IPS or not. He replied that the screen is IPS.

I looked at the EMI options and didn't like them. So I decided to do the payment in full and went back hom... Read more

When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.

Thanks for the help in advance!

A:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... A:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I am a property manager who manages some self-storage facilities. We recently had a few spaces go to auction and as a result the auction winners threw stuff they didn't want into the dumpster. I was emptying the trash from the office and noticed that someone had thrown a few laptops into the dumpster. As a tech nerd, I climbed into the dumpster and pulled the laptops from the garbage.
One of the laptops was a Dell laptop. I cleaned it up a bit and used one of my Dell laptop chargers to try and charge the battery overnight. Then, I hit the power button and hoped..... nada. Opened the back panel and immediately saw that it had no hard drive.... but the memory was still installed as well as the WIFI adapter. The screen was cracked but I had hope that it might still be usable once I could actually get the laptop to boot.
So, I pulled out one of my old SATA laptop hard drives, re-formatted it and installed it in the laptop.
Hit the power button and saw that I could not install Win10 from the USB port since the laptop had an admin password installed and of course, I had no idea what it was. So, I called Dell and gave them all the laptop info and my personal info and they gave me a code to enter which was supposed to disable or erase the unknown admin password and allow me to change the boot options to include the usb port.
The code does not work. The dell rep mentioned something about hitting the Shift and Control keys while I hit the enter key but that still doesn't... Read more
