Individual Files in Libraries

Q: Individual Files in Libraries

Is it possible to assign individual files to a library? So far, I have only found a way to put a folder in a library and when I do that the entire file list for that folder appears in the library.

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Individual Files in Libraries

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Individual Files in Libraries

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

I recently bought Windows 8.1, and I was excited to use the new Libraries feature in the explorer, since I have my personal folders spread over several disks.

However, when I change the layout in one library, every library of the same "type" (the "optimize for" setting in the library properties) changes to show with the same layout in both the root and all subfolders.

This is annoying, because I want to show for example my Downloads library as a "detailed list", while my Dropbox library should be "large icons". And further, I have one library with only shortcuts to my games, which I have created large box cover icons for, and I'd like to show them off as "extra large icons". But since I have all of them optimized as "general items", they all change if I change just one.

I don't want to have to assign different optimizations to different folders either just to have different views, since that would mess up the purpose of the special tab in the ribbon.

Is this my explorer being crazy or is it an actual limitation of the libraries system? And above all, can it be worked around?

I'm stuck with a script again and would appreciate it if anyone can help point me in the right direction. I have a long rolling log which I want to split up into individual files. I recently bought Star Wars the Original Radio Drama on audiobook. I want to copy/rip this into mp3 files so I can listen to them on my phone and/or mp3 player. I have windows 8.1 and using media player to rip them. However, the problem occurs when I insert the second disc and media player starts ripping the cd without changing the names of the tracks. I didn't notice this until I was on the third disc. Now I have multiple versions with the same title and haven't been able to tell them apart other than deleting them.

I'd like to do this with each disc its own titles, etc. I don't want to do this via iTunes, which every online website gives as the way to do this. I also don't want them in one large file. I'd like to find a stopping point now and then. Any help, including ink to different programs that will work, would be helpful.

Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it a relatively simple task once I have good .dll files? I would rather not have to pay $200 to someone like the Best Buy Geek Squad just to make what hopefully are minor system changes. Any advice is appreciated.

A:Where can I get specific individual .dll files?

You can extract them from the win 7 install media,

Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD

If you don't have one you can download one here,

I just used 7-Zip and found those files in the install.wim, you have to grab the right folder once inside but it's all explained in the tutorial.

The title is accurate, if a little confusing. Here's what's up:
A few days ago my Libraries disappeared. The Libraries folder exists, but there was nothing in there. No Documents, no music--nothing. Right clicking and choosing "restore default libraries" had no effect--not even an error message. Trying to create a new
Library works, but when you try to rename "New Library" to "Documents" an error message comes up:

There is already a folder with the same name in this location.

Oddly enough, this behavior happened at the same time that many of my files became set to Hidden. I admit I panicked when everything was apparently gone, but a quick Show Hidden Files solved that. I can navigate to all My Music, My Documents, etc. by exploring
to my user folder.
Any ideas? I've seen this topic pop up in many different forums, and the recommended fix is always to right click and select "Restore Default Libraries." As mentioned, this has no effect on my machine.
Thanks for any help,

A:Libraries not showing up, "restore default libraries" not working, but the libraries are there.

Hi Mike,
Press WinKey + R to bring the Run dialog. Type this:
cmd /k cd /d "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries"
Press {ENTER}
Type the command DIR /A in the CMD Prompt and check if the

And type ATTRIB to check the attributes of those files. Copy the output and post here.

I have a shortcut to my HOSTS file on my desktop for ease of access because I edit it regularly.

However, little mischievous people may go into this if I am not on my computer and be a pain. Therefore, I want a way of protecting it from opening up in it's main application.

I don't really need it to be sophisticated, it is not to prevent hackers etc, it is merely to stop people having instant access to it from my desktop.

I doubt there is any built-in feature of windows, therefore what third-party applications can do this?

A:Password protect individual files

just create your own account and keep them in your documents folder. nobody will have access as long as they do not have admin privileges. or keep them on a flash drive. I would strongly urge you not to password protect individual files because you could forget the password and lose access to the files. this forum is full of locked threads because of users wanting help with forgotten passwords when they were trying to protect files.

I have played around with the backup functionality; I know how to backup a system image. What I cannot figure out is how to backup individual files; when I configure the backup and drilling down into the folders, the individual files are not shown.

In XP, I backup my Outlook .pst every day (I work from home so this is important). I had a NTBACKUP job set that would backup only the .pst file every day...no problem to set up.

When trying to configure W7 backup I can drill down to C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook but the only thing that's shown in the Outlook checkbox window is "Accounts."

The .pst is not in Accounts, it's in the root of the Outlook folder.

How can I configure the backup utility to be more granular? Thanks for the help.

I can't get rid of CyberDefender or MyIdentityDefender. I don't like it because it severely limits the information that comes up on the web to choose from. I've tried to remove it with Control Panel Add or Remove programs. It kind of flashes real quick and then just stays there. Some blogs recommended using certain free (or so they said were free but were not) downloads of spyware removers. The problem with these is that I am at risk of having it remove something my job downloaded, some software that works with microsoft word and then I can't work (at home). I had to do Go Back To an Earlier date on the computer to undo this. I need to know what the specific files are I need to remove and how to find them in the computer. The drive on my MacBook failed recently and I really need to get my data back. I am hesitant to take my hard drive in for repair/recovery for fear that, somehow, the techs will be able to see the individual files in a dmg file I keep on my laptop. They will be extracting data by taking my drive apart (to bypass bad sectors?), rather than by just using software. What do Dmg files look like from a tech's perspective? Can they see file names? Preview images? Or, will they simply see a dmg file? Thanks for your time!

I have been scanning up photos in Windows 8 and now windows 8.1. Unfortunately I forget and left the system open for more than 4 hours and it upgraded itself. At any rate in going back to check some of the photos I had scanned, they are no longer in their folders and have disappeared completely. I did searches, etc and nothing. I was also in the middle of scanning a bunch of photos when suddenly the message came up that the folder I was scanning to was no longer there. An hour later I finally located the entire folder and scanned photos in the recycle bin. It just went there itself.

What can be done to prevent this. I scan and toss the photos but now I find that they are disappearing days down the line.

I have 4 WD external HDD's purchased between 2004 and 2008. On these harddrives are various files, including but not limited to the following:
+backups for my primary hd
+tv shows
+program installers
+personal movie collection used for editting
I have found that certain files cause windows explorer to crash - be they movies, tv shows, installer files, files on backup, etc. - when highlighted and cause Dr. Watson to go bonkers. There seems to be no connection: files with similar sources, extensions, sizes, use dates, names, pathnames, etc. seem to work fine. In all there are just over 20,000 files, of which maybe 30 cause this problem. It is possible in transfers they were just simply improperly transferred (causing pieces of the file to be lost forever), but there is a file I KNOW that happened to and Dr. Watson never went bonkers and Explorer never crashed when I selected it; it was an .avi of "Beetlejuice" whose transfer was terminated before completion, and all it does when selected is simply not play in WMP. A:CD shows data, but not individual picture files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Photographers own the rights to print the pictures .. And usually don't give you the readable Images that the camera took.
They probably have proprietary software to read the pictures ..
The discs you can't read are probably what you'd take to get them printed.
The images you can see .. Are low resolution copies that probably won't make good prints ..For previews only.

They don't want you to print them yourself or have anyone else do it ..They want to charge you.
What's the extension (file type) of the data files in the Disc that you can't view ???

A:Is it possible to assign photos as Icons to individual files?

Hi Daysaved, welcome to TSF.

You need to re-size the photo to about 20x20 pixels, or any standard icon resolution.
Save the file as .ico

You can now right click your file, go to 'Properties'. Under the 'shortcut' tab click 'Change Icon'. Browse to your newly created .ico file and select it.

This should work for all types of files.

A:How do I delete individual files created by system protection?

Hello Bhootnat, and welcome to Seven Forums.

A restore point is different than a backup. You will not be able to delete a specific file included in a restore point. Any attempt to mess with a restore point like that would most likely end with the restore point no longer able to be selected to be used when doing a system restore.

Instead, you could only delete specific restore points if you like.

Is there a faster way to password-protect folders than the ones I already know, such as AxCrypt or putting in a zip with 7Zip? I have a lot of huge files and it would take too long.

I do NOT need powerful encryption for these particular files. No hacker is ever going to get them; it's only to keep out my roommates who use my account on my computer. For various reasons setting up separate accounts is not an option.

I"m wondering if there's some way that's not as secure as AxCrypt because that's overkill for me but would still add a password and do it quicker.

A:Faster way to password-protect individual files/folders

I have installed software that can encrypt/ decrypt individual files/ folders or multiple files/ folders. It's pretty easy to use via drag/ drop folders/ files that you want to encrypt (accepts multiples) or select via right click context menu.

Right click a file/ folder to encrypt/ decryptDrag 'n' Drop multiples to encrypt/ decryptEncryted files have .pcr extensionIf you use the main program window to decrypt files or multiple files it totally and permanently removes encryption and restores the default file extension.

If you decrypt via click and open - you are asked for a password to open the file and it remains encrypted when you close the file.

Hi Everyone

I recently upgraded laptop and also moved from XP to Windows 7 and am now experiencing problems organising my files - sound familiar At the moment I am writing a dissertation and I liked XP Explorer because I knew exactly where everything was. What has been happening with Win 7 is that I have made several document locations within Libraries and that if I save a document in a folder in one location the document is not saved to the same folder in a different location. This is causing headaches . For example, I have a My Documents location and I put a Revisions folder in there. Revisions is actually a subfolder of Planning which is a subfolder of Literature Review which is a subfolder of Research which is a subfolder of Salomons(where I study) which is a subfolder of My Documents. I have another location which is Research so I could also access Revisions through there although I would have to go through another couple of folders to get to it. If I open the Revisions folder via My Documents location and make some changes to a document, these changes are not made to the document were I to access it through the Research location.
For me the advantage of Libraries was that I didn't have to drill down to access subfolders but it is not working out that way. I wonder if I should get the old XP explorer interface back up as I just want simple and easy at this point

Many thanks for help

Hello all,
I am fairly new to macros and am looking to split a large word document into smaller files based on a text string within the document, and then save those files as individual word documents, or as a bonus, PDF documents. The text string is "HEADER DATA".

Basically, I want the macro to find the text string "HEADER DATA", then select that page and all pages up to but not including the next instance of "HEADER DATA", then cut those pages from the original document, create a new document with the same formatting/ page layout, and save that document with a new file name. I want the process repeated until the end of the document, and each file saved with a new file name.

Some attributes about the file:

The text string "HEADER DATA" is always in the same location on a page, but is not at the top of the page.
The format and layout of the new document must match the current document.

Here is something I came up with (don't laugh too hard, lol). This will extract the first pages as intended, and saves the new file, but then Word stops responding. I don't quite know what the error is. Thank you in advance for any help.

This happened after updating to Windows 8.1 today.
For some reason while downloading anything from the internet, in the prompt window the library shows up on the left panel from the Desktop to Video folders. I have no idea who at Microsoft thought this was a good idea (probably the same person who said "[My] Computer" should now be called "This PC"), but they should be fired.

Now every time I try to download something the library often gets in my way because it shouldn't have been there in the first place. When I download files, I like to keep the download window small, and those libraries don't help with that at all. Is there any way to hide/remove them?
I imagine it's super easy and simple.

Here's an image of the problem I'm talking about as well.
And no, this issue has absolutely nothing to do with the Explorer Window (to my knowledge), and you would discover that if you looked through the thread in the link I provided above.

I hope someone here will be able to help me. Thank you.

Isthis using IE? If so have you tried a different browser? I use Firefox with Download Statusbar AddOn.

Edit: also this may be worth a try:

Hello everyone,

I've been trying to add my photos and music to the Metro apps and if I understand correctly, I need to add the folder locations to the Libraries.

I've got my Music and Photos located on a Windows 2008 R2 server with the Windows Search service running and configured to index those locations.

Initially, I simply added the network location to the library ie: \\SERVER\Shared\Music, and this SORT OF worked, I was only able to see the folders in the photos and only some music showed up with some track info missing.

Then I made the folders available offline and added them again, this time NOTHING shows up.

Has anyone gotten the Metro apps to work with network locations?

Though the Windows 7 method of storing files/folders in libraries, I am encountering problems I never have seen in XP. My Documents file is so cluttered with files that do not belong there that I have created an XP like file storage system on my C: drive.

I do not know how, but the libraries in Windows 7, especially My Documents, contains script files, image files (not pictures but graphics that are part of search engine or browser window), to the point that searching for an actual document is useless. I have created a folder off the C; drive that has sub-folders & files stored in them that I deliberately store there so I can access them. This isn't healthy for the PC because I know that Windows 7 is also making a copies for My Documents within My libraries of the same file. It is an ad hoc procedure used because it took so long to wade through the extraneous files incorrectly stored in My Documents. (To a lesser extent the same problem is true with My Music, My Pictures etc). Since I don't know the types of many of the files mistakenly filed in My Libraries>My Documents, it would be impossible for me to go through each file and correctly assign it to its proper folder.

Is there a Windows utility, or an effective aftermarket utility, that is capable of going through all of the files on a PC and correctly assigning them to their home? Is there a system setting I should check that would ensure the files are correctly stored? I have gone through the fil... Read more

Libraries is not a real folder, it's a place that is used to point to other places on your computer. Read here, maybe it will help you understand the concept. It's pretty cool once you do: Understanding Windows 7 Libraries

My sister has used windows pcs very productively for many years and currently has a 4-year old Win 7 64bit pc with 8gb ram. Her 500 Gb HDD is only 40% full.

The other week, doing something in Windows Explorer, she suddenly found that many system folders/files had appeared in her Libraries/Documents folder along with the normal folders and files you would expect to see. The listings are in the attached Word file.

There are some shortcuts which presumably can be deleted without any problem but she is concerned about other folders/files which don't appear to be shortcuts.

Any suggestions for restoring her Libraries/Document folder to the normal content will be much appreciated.

13 February. Thanks gentlemen. I should add that my sister did a System Restore to a date prior but it didn't change anything. Also, she lives 30 miles away so what you see is what she emailed me.
I tried to 'save as' the .docx to Word 2003 but it froze; however, have added my .png screen shot of the page.

Thanks in advance,

I'd like to assist, but I'm using Microsoft Word 2003 and it's not able to read this. Can you take some screenshots? Use the .PNG format too for the highest quality screenshots without increasing the file size too much.

I have about 400 video files in a folder but I need to put each one in its own folder so I can use the jukebox function on my media player. Is there any way it can be done without having to transfer each file to an individual folder one by one?

I really have been avoided using These Libraries? because when I go to Dos or windows explorer I can?t find the files that are in them. This is a bane to my existence. It crowds my mind with ideas that the world has become totally taken over by narcissistic sociopaths !
I have this file that is in my library called pictures and in its properties it says Its located in under "Users\usernamesetup\pictures.
THERE IS NOT A FOLDER called pictures when I browse to that location. Someplace within the OS the OS must know where this file IS REALLY located.
If this was not a laptop I would simply use a second ssd drive and stay far away from those libraries. But that is probably a mistake.
Yes I set my username to USERNAMESETUP so I would know for sure where that came from and how it influences my computer.
Maybe there is a rational reason for these Libraries not being rational. But so far its looking grim.

A:Why use "Libraries" when you dont know where the files are located ?

Hello Don,

Use the %UserProfile%\Pictures path to see if that may open the current account's Pictures folder with the files in it.
