Something is sending email from my system

Q: Something is sending email from my system

Yesterday I notice there was 5 unknow emails being sent by my system using my user name. Of course they where (Rude and Crude). What is this caused by and how do I stop it? I ran Virus and spyware scans and it did not find anything? I am using Thunderbird as my mail tool. Windows XP sp2 OS. Zone Alarm Security Suite.

Preferred Solution: Something is sending email from my system

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I need help sending a picture through email, that can be viewed by others. I have a HP Pavilion 6535; Win98se; and have Digital Postman, Irfanview, and IPhoto. When I scan and send through Dig. Postman, it comes out an .exe file when what I need to send is .gif or .jpg. I tried to change it with "rename" but all I end up with is an eyeball..which is what I started with...with a different file extension that won't open it. For the record, I am not a computer whiz!!!! (As if you didn't know that!!) I've tried reading the directions on IPhoto and end up with a headache!! Irfanview would be perfect, but I can't find a way to send pics through that program. Any and all help gratefully appreciated!!!!!!
Next, I just added 128mg memory, and still on occasion get the "system resources are low" message. I thought adding more memory would 'fix' that problem. Where did I go wrong?
Thank you a million times for any advice!!

A:Sending pictures by email/System Resources

Well I do it the old fashioned way. I will scan the picture, save it as gif, jpg whatever on my hard drive and then just attach it to an email. I am not familiar with the software your talking about but it works for me. Your scanner should allow you the option to save in whatever format you want.

As far as system resources go if you do a search of this site for system resources you will turn up numerous threads that talk about it and how to fix it.

Adding more ram will do nothing for system resources, it is all dependant on how many applications are running.

It appears that my email is sending spam to a portion of my address books. This has happened three or four times in the past few weeks and when I go to my outbox, it says it is empty.
My System Restore also does not work, I believe as a result of an attack earlier this year. It appears to function normally, however, when you confirm the restore point selection, the system shuts down and restarts and a screen come up saying Restoration Incomplete. I mention this second problem because a restore may be part of the solution to the first problem.
I am running a Dell Dimensions 8400 with 2 GB of RAM. The OS is XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 with Service Pack 3 Build 2600. I use Firefox for almost all internet use, but I do use IE occasionally when required for the particular software application. My email is yahoo and my antivirus software is Norton Internet Suite provided by Comcast Cable. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I have run CC Cleaner, Superantispyware (free edition), Spybot S&D, and Malwarebytes anti software (free edition)and have not fixed the problem, although Malwarebyte's did find and quarantine a risktool.ck virus.
Please let me know what to do.

Hey everybody,
So I have a bit of an issue with my computer...
About a month and a half ago, I started realizing one of my emails (Yahoo)  was sending out spam. I changed my password multiple times, but it kept sending out. The emails didn't appear in my sent box, but I had myself on my contacts list, and emails from myself kept popping up in my spam box. I checked the full headers, and it was in fact coming from my email, but from an IP somewhere in Massachusetts...
Yesterday, my Ad-Aware kept saying that it detected a malicious process, and after the following scan, would quarintine multiple instances of Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT. I restarted my computer, but it kept popping up.
When trying to watch a movie with my partner, Windows Media Player crashed, and when I tried to open a different .AVI file, it crashed again. (To my knowledge, my computer is fully updated)
Then, after all of this, when I was trying to weed through the files on here, my computer just crashes. Black screen, no response. I have to manually power down and reboot in safe mode w/ networking to be able to post on here.
I can't seem to figure out how whatever is in my system got through...
So, any help is greatly appreciated!
[Running Windows 7x64 SP1]

I use Outlook for email, from Office 2007 Professional because the accounting program and my Palm Pro PDA likes it.

Just recently I have had a couple of complaints that emails with a video attached I have forwarded have been delivered to the addressee in excess of 30 or 40 times.

The latest was last night when one of my sons said he had received it 104 times, and another friend in the USA 99 times, needless to say both aren't happy, the video was a wmv (3mb).

When my son called me a an hour or so later it was still in my outgoing mail box, obviously because it was still sending.

I have run full AV scan using Esset Nod32 which came up clean, so I’m at a loss where else the problem is or where/what to look for.

Thanks for reading…..Any clues/help would be appreciated.

i have been trying to fix my email/outlook spam issue.  emails are going out WITH my actual email address, sending emails to people in my contacts, etc.
I also have been getting a ton of spam emails myself.
I use:
-Windows 7 Pro
-64 Bit
-Outlook 2010
-I have our own domain name email address, that is hosted by Frontier
Odd thing:  I changed my password for my email, but my outlook kept sending/receiving with the old password.
When I tried to update  the new password in outlook (which I verified by using the webmail versus outlook), it would not accept it.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Intermittently, Outlook 2007 will crash while sending an email and, needless to say, the email is not sent. However I wanted to know if there is a temp or backup copy of that mail anywhere. I've looked in drafts and it's not there.

I've sometimes typed a very long email and then lost the whole email when Outlook crashes so I just wanted to know if, like Word, there is a temp file that may be created.

Most ISP limit the size of an attachment to 5mb but your link with your server will normally time out way before you reach this.

Hi there

what email client are you using on both systems, also remember network connections and are you running from SAME computer.

Linux networking in general is superior to Windows but if you are using a decent email client it shouldn't make a huge amount of difference.

Other factors -- what "pre-scans" etc are done by the email client (virus / attachment checking etc), are both set up to use imap / pop3 or going through an Ms Exchange server. Loads of things you need to compare when doing this type of analysis.

Any webmail based client is likely to be hideously slow though when compared with a proper email client on whatever system.

I am having a problem sending email to an AOL address via outlook 2002. I can send to the address using my webmail portal and my yahoo, but not through my outlook. all other emails go out properly.

any ideas?

A:sending email to AOL

Hi, AOL email never did work with Outlook Express, I am not sure about Microsoft Outlook that comes with Office, if that is the Outlook you are meaning....

AOL users could not send mail nor get mail through OE, at least back a few years ago they could not, and if AOL was the service provider....there were some utilities that claimed to circumvent this, but I have not used them, and it seemed difficult to install and set these up, I did not bother with it at all.
(Things might be different with AOL mail these days.)
If you typed up a new mail in OE, and tried to send it, you would get an error message...of course, since there usually would have not been any account set up for POP3 mail in or out, no servers to connect to, and since AOL used different types of mail service, no way to get mail into OE.

Getting a Gmail account, free, might be a quicker solution, Gmail is simply great.

You should check out this: Description of Google's Gmail, how it works, privacy, etc...

And also> , take a look at this, it may be the easiest way to do it>

You do still I think have to be invited to Gmail, so if you know someone who has it, they should have invitations to spare...if you want to try it, let us know, I have invitations.

Hi, and welcome to the board.

- First, set Windows 98 to display three-letter file extensions: Open My Computer, choose View, Folder Options and click the View tab. Deselect the checkmark next to "Hide file extensions for known filetypes." Click OK.

- Click Start, Run, type sendto, and click OK. Windows will open a window titled SendTo.

- Right-click in the SendTo window and select New, Text Document.
Rename the file to Mail Recipient.MAPIMail (copy this exactly).
Close the SendTo window.

Does anyone know of a way to turn off the email address in the BCC section of Vista email and show only the names? In XP Windows Express, it only showed the names with a semi-colon between names. I've just gotten my new computer (Vista 64 bit) set up with email contacts. When I send BCCs, it lists the name and the email addresses which makes that section very long.

A:Sending BCC email

Hi, What i have done to aleviate this problem is when adding contacts to the address book, i have listed a display name. So when sending an email it will only display what you have listed. You can edit the contact in address book by selecting the person, right click, properties, it then will enable you to edit this.

Previously i was helped with code to send a static email through outlook express. Which work perfectly in my home network but when I took it to my work network I could not get the emails to send. Here is the code that worked at my network at home:
Public Sub Email()

Dim iMsg As Object
Dim iConf As Object
Dim WBname As String
Set iMsg = CreateObject("CDO.Message")
Set iConf = CreateObject("CDO.Configuration")

With iMsg
Set .Configuration = iConf
.To = "[email protected]"
.CC = ""
.BCC = ""
.From = """test"" <[email protected]>"
.Subject = "test"
.TextBody = "message"
.AddAttachment ""
End With

End Sub
The only major difference that is obvious, is the email at the office requires SPA where as my home network does not. Any thoughts Would be great!

I can't believe a can't find a solution to this anywhere.

I have my own domain name (MYDOMAIN.COM say). I know that I can forward emails sent to and address at the mydomain.com to any email address. However sending is my problem.

I can use my email client (Outlook 2003) to send using my ISP address, but in the sender field it will say @MYDOMAIN.COM and it works fine.

The problem is that if I am not at home and I want to use the MYDOMAIN.COM address I don't know how to. I can't use my ISP address as described because I need to be on my ISP.

I don't think this can be done using webmail, because that doesn't let you change the sender address (i.e. if you send an email from [email protected] then that will be the sender address and you can't set it to [email protected]).

So what I'm looking for is a POP3 account that I can use to send from any ISP and hence use outlook to change the sender address

Surely people are doing this somehow ???

Hey, All!

Quick question....(I can only hope!)

I have received songs via email from friends in the past and I open them and they're quick d/l's...nothing out of the norm. Whenever I try to sned the same, my email stays in the "sending" process for, like, 10 minutes or more! OR it finally times out and tells me the file is too big. This is driving me nuts. I've tried using my web accounts (google, yahoo, etc.) in ADDITION to my ISP, but no go. If it finally DOES send, I feel like the poor receiver is probably going nuts as they d/l it. I've tried zipping the song and that doesn't seem to matter, either.

Any ideas? Thanks so much for your time......

Good morning. This may seem a little basic for you all, but I bet some one can help me here. is there any internet service provider that automaticly resizes pictures so they will download into the email and transmit as quickly and with the quality as the AOL system does? I know there are ways to resize the pictures myself before attatching them to the email, but I don't know how and am afraid I would permanantly resize them on my machine too. I have researched other ISP's as best I could and can not find another that automaticly resizes pictures and so I am asking for your help. Thanks,

Using Outlook Express, windows xp. I can send mail without attachments, but when I send one with an attachment the sending goes on time out and never shows sent. It goes into the outbox and asks if I want to send it when I close Outlook Express.
The mail with attachment is received. I deleted everything in the outbox and the sent box.
I then deleted the two .dbx files, I then did a compact, but I still have the problem.
I ran Malwarebytes and Anti Virus software.
What should I do, would repairing windows help?
Thanks for your help

I would like to be able to send email to a list of contacts from an office computer.
I am currently using hotmail for this, but would like to know of it is possible to setup an email "server?" with an email address that I could create so I could use my company name instead of hotmail.com

And is there a way to send email to a group without everyone seeing all of the other email address's?

A:Sending email from office.

You need a domain name to allow your company name as the "@company.com" in the email address. They are not free, but not overly expensive.

To send emails to a group, you must use the BCC field in the emails, then each person only sees their own address. Use your own address in the From: field, you get one copy back as confirmation that it is sent.

Hi there. I am wondering about the security of sending pictures via email. Example: I have a camera dock and upload pictures from my digital camera into my email and send them to friends. Are the pictures flying around in cyber space. Actually I send pictures of my grandchildren and family and wonder how safe it is to do that. I understand that pictures only come through cyber space, I hope this is the correct term, in number form and not just as a picture and that the only way they can be viewed by another person is if they are stored on a server. I am not really that worried but am curious more than anything. I am no where close to being a computer geek so please tell me in plain english. lol I was in the Air Force several years ago and did punch cards for the huge mainframe computer and I have a desk top PC for email and news but that is it for my huge experience. Thank you for your time. Barbara

don't worry about SENDING pictures, only worry about receiving email with an attachment that has an executable file. But if you have an Internet Security program, Virus and Spam checking program that is often updated and have the firewall up, you should be ok.
Reading through the Security forums here will help you to learn a lot and to know what to watch out for.

I received a message from someone I had been emailing, it said that there was an error and to click the link to read the message, stupidly I clicked it as I had been expecting a message. Straight after this I started receiving failure notices of spam emails I had not sent, I went to the sent folder to see how many of these emails had been sent out- there was nothing there!

The failure notices contained a mixture of contacts and people whom I have never herd of. I imminently changed my password and checked my account settings-everything seemed normal. I have started receiving emails from confused friends and family wondering what the email was about. This means at least some did send although they did not appear in my sent or junk folders.

I have spent the whole day researching how I can fix this-was the change of password enough to prevent this from happening again? is this too optimistic? I have tried to contact yahoo-which was a waste of time. I have got the header of one of the spam messages, which is below this message (from what I have read is supposed to indicate who the message is really from?)

I am so clueless at to what I should do now, please help!
Many Thanks,

A:Email sending out spam, HELP!

Hi feltmountain,
It looks like you use Yahoo Mail.

Some information you NEED about Yahoo Mail:
If your Yahoo mail account has been hacked, or if you find mysterious e-mails sent or received in your name, it may not have anything to do with you.
If you contact Yahoo, they will tell you to use a more secure password.
That's good advice, but not necessarily the source of the problem.
There is a fair likelihood that the fault lies with Yahoo servers.
Yahoo has been unwilling or unable to make their e-mail service adequately secure.
IT experts have blogged about it for years.
If criminals can hack into Yahoo servers, they can get all your information, including your passwords, e-mails and recipients addresses.
The resulting spam is sometimes just a nuisance, but sometimes it's porn, or malicious attachments.
Some articles on the subject:

Yahoo even has a plan to recycle inactive user IDs ! :

Until things change, I would suggest you save any critical Yahoo e-mails and address book(s), then establish a new e-mail account with a different provider.
Your Internet Service provider will likely offer free e-mail accounts.
I would then delete everything in all Yahoo e-mail folders (inbox,... Read more

Hi - I did post this (can't find it and no new posts logged to me) last week so please forgive me if this is a repeat.

I am receiving unwanted emails which mostly go into the junk folder and I delete. Some still come through to my inbox so must be a different address and I put them on the Block Sender list. But I have unauthorised emails being sent from some of them which get returned as spam.

I don't know how to stop the unauthorised sending and if possible - how do I stop the rubbish? I am using McAfee antivirus on all devices.

Thanks for your time.

I am having a problem with outgoing emails. It is taking people up to a day to receive mail from me, seems to mainly be to other outlook accounts. I have done tests with people on AOL and Yahoo and those seem to come through within a few minutes, still not as fast as it was.
I am hoping someone can help me resolve this issue.

I doubt that it's a problem with Outlook or Outlook Express...it's much more likely to be a problem with your ISP. You should call their tech support and ask why there is a delay in delivery.

Emails without attachments send immediately, however, those with (very small) attachments or images simply sit in the outbox of Microsoft Outlook 2002 SP3. The one I'm trying to send now has 2 images and the total size of the email is 85KB. I run XP with AVG. Thank you.
