Skype and email username/password hijacked

Q: Skype and email username/password hijacked

Dear BleepingComputer Technician:

My mother-in-law was here recently helping my family with the birth of our new child.  After three weeks of using our computer, she suddenly wasn't able to sign into Skype.  Her password had been changed.  Then as we tried to reset the password we discovered her email address had been deleted.  She had just accessed and used her email the day before.  Her information was definitely stolen and I feel it was probably logged while using our computer.  The reason is that prior to her arrival my wife and I have noticed many pop-ups, especially when using Google Chrome.  Since we are living in China and I tire of being unable to access several websites, I had attempted to download a VPN browser software that a friend was using, and it was free of spyware/malware.  But in my haste, I downloaded and installed the software from a location that I am sure had spyware/malware software attached..  so now, I beg, please, help!

We are using Windows XP SP3..

Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My wife was given a computer that seemed good but i am not sure if it was infected with trojans and spyware i thrn tried and used a usb onto 2 of the laptops and seems i got same thing on all 3 i am using a desktop at present since i do not feel safe on the other ones .  After  weeks of using our computer, she suddenly wasn't able to sign into hotmail or Skype.  Her password had been changed as well as mine  Then as we tried to reset the password we discovered her email address had been deleted.  She had just accessed and used her email the day before.  Her information was definitely stolen and I feel it was probably logged while using our computer.  The reason i suspect is my wife and I have noticed many pop-ups, especially when using Google Chrome and redirects     I had attempted to download a VPN browser software  and it was free of spyware/malware.  But in my haste, I downloaded and installed the software from a location that I am sure had spyware/malware software attached and now i am using windows 8 on this pc and get a constant dial up window at certain times and all programs are running slow many are crashing and more think backdoor trojans etc.  so now,  please we beg, please, help!...

Hello.

About a month ago I saw for the first time the username system on Windows 8. I have never created as much I remember a username in my computer. However, suddenly this new thing popped before my eyes. But it was'nt a request or something reasonable that Windows noted me. It claimed that my username is (I rather not to post his name) and not my name. I somehow knew this name is familiar to me. I did'nt use my computer much since I had a lot tests so for a second I thought I created this username and made up this name and I just don't remember...

I forgot about this, edited the username so it will be named as my name naturally and kept moving forward. Now I use much more in the computer since it's summer vacation .

Today, I watched a video and I heard a Skype message notification an unusual thing since my Skype username is really unused (I assume that sound is part of the video I watched). Anyway, I entered into the Skype application and checked out if I have a message. But what I saw is something I remember but not very well. I saw the same name I had in my username. The same name of the username I didn't create. In fact, I don't know this name and it doesn't look like a name from my country at all. It was a Skype contact of me and not just any- it was in the favourite list. And I never use the favourite rate system in anything (except Youtube). Our conversation is completely blank and he has a picture (and he didn't look like a guy from my country either). I removed ... Read more

A:Windows username and Skype weird-might-be problems

Don't think there's much to worry if it's Skype only, I get messages and requests every now and than even if set to "Contacts only", I think they are using name generators to generate some possible names and place calls and requests from that or predefined lists. Similar to unsolicited phone or Fax calls about advertising, questionnaires etc.

I've read through pages and pages of search results for this, but they all seem to be between Win7 and XP, or something not quite the same as my problem.

Here at home we are all using Windows 7 (a mix of Home Premium and Ultimate). I have an HTPC which has all our DVDs on. This PC has a few shares so we can access our movies across the network.

I have set up the shares using the Sharing Wizard thing, and set 'Everyone' to Read/Write. I can verify the permissions for the shares in Advanced Sharing > Permissions, and see that 'Everyone' has full control.

In the Network and Sharing Center, the settings for sharing are as follows:Network discovery = ON
File and printer sharing = ON
Public folder sharing = OFF (no need for it)
Media streaming = ON (for WMP, Xbox)
Use 128-bit encryption = ON
Password protected sharing = OFF
Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections = ON
I should point out after the last bullet point that we are not using a Homegroup.

So with all that as it is, whenever I try to connect to the HTPC shares from another computer, I still get prompted for a username and password, with the "X Invalid user name and password" message beneath the text boxes. I can, however, connect without a problem from my laptop, which has the same username and password as the admin account on the HTPC.

The strange thing now - if I type "anonymous" into the username box and try to connect, I get in. Everything then works as it should. So either all... Read more

A:Password protected sharing is OFF, still asked for username/password?

You might want to check that the time/date settings are correct on the HTPC. If they aren't correct on one of your machines it will give you a password prompt as you described.

Also under power options, make sure that it's not set to require a password when coming out of sleep state.

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options "look upper left side". Click "Require a password on wakeup".

Select the radio button "Don't Require a Password" and then Save Changes. Your done.

A:Can't Log On With My Username/Password

You can reset any password by going through the following steps. The process is involved and requires some careful typing. Ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you if you lack experience in this area.
1. Set your BIOS to use the DVD drive as the primary boot device.
2. Boot with a Windows Repair CD.
3. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD ?" appears.
4. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next. You are now in Repair Mode.
5. Select an Operating System, then click Next.
6. Select the Command Prompt.
7. Identify the correct drive letter for your Windows installation. It could be a drive other than C: but it won't be X:. You do it by typing the commands
dir C:\Win* {Enter}
dir D:\Win* {Enter}
dir E:\Win* {Enter}
etc.
until you find the Windows folder.
I will call that drive "Q:".
8. Type these commands:
cd /d Q:\windows\System32 {Enter}
move sethc.exe \ {Enter}
copy cmd.exe sethc.exe {Enter}
9. Reboot normally but hold down the Shift key permanently.
10. When challenged for a password, tap the Shift key five times. You will see a small black screen.
11. Type these commands:
net user {Enter}
(To see a list of all accounts that exist on your machine)
net user Administrator {Enter}
(To see if the Administrator account is active)
12. Type these commands:
net user "xxx&q... Read more

Have been trying to connect to a Sony FSV-E1 NAS box from Windows 8 but for some reason
I cannot get it to except my username and password.
The system works when using Windows XP using the same username and password so I know the system is working.

I can get access to the control panel on the Sony and enter the Administrator username and password which
then allows me to use the control panel and change or setup new users and folders.

I think it may be something to do with the way Windows 8 transmits the username and password.

Anybody got any ideas as am stuck.
Thanks for any help and I like the forum as have already solve a few problems without needing to ask

Try making some adjustments to the lanman server and encryption settings on the Windows 8 machine then see if you can get into this NAS. The link below shows the required settings.

Was wondering if in FF (or even IE) you could put the username and password in the url before connect to a site so you dont have to login. Reason being a site a bunch of friends and I frequent now need you to register to see anything on their site so rather than make a bunch of accounts i want to make 1 and post the link in our forum so everybody can use it. (www.site.com/community/index.php?action=login) i have tried a few ways that ive seen on some forums like http://username:[email protected] and also tried index.php?action=login?user=xxx&pass=xxx but neither seem to work.

thanks in advance for any replies.

A:username and password in url

If you make one account for everyone to use, only one person will be able to login at any one time.

There are various ways of editing the URL to include password details, but if the website doesn't support this feature, or has specifically blocked it, then it can't be done.

Hi. I just setup a windows 7 with WGM server, (workgroup Mail server) I control the pc via remote desktop. I have two questions. 1. I need to restart the pc every now and then to refresh WGM. I knew how to do this using the windows task manager. Sadly, this skill has now gone missing out my head. 2. I also use to know where to add the username and password in the registry so that the pc boots past it and executes the WGM service.

Like I said, I have done this on a pc about two years ago and it worked great. It was a trial run for a customer. He decided against it and I canned all the info. Please assist.

Add a shortcut on the desktop: shutdown /s /t 10 That will shutdown the computer in 10 seconds. You can make it /t 0 if you want it to shutdown immediately.

To make the computer automatically logon a specific account, do this:

Press WinKey+r
Type control userpasswords2 and press Enter
Select the account you want to automatically login, uncheck User must enter a user name and password to use this computer and click the Apply button.
In the Automatically Log On window, enter the password if there is one, leave blank otherwise and click OK.
Click Apply and OK to close the User Accounts window.

Now when the computer boots, the account you picked will automatically logon.

Is it possible to install Windows 8.1 without a username or email? The reason I'm asking is that I have some spare hardware lying round, my local store has Windows 8.1 on offer and I thought I could knock a couple of machines together as Xmas presents.

When I have played around with Windows 8.1 in the past, it seems very picky re usernames, email, email security code etc whereas I would like to give my neighbor a new pc, and the 1st time he turned it on it would ask him to choose a name, set up an account etc. I'm guessing a new box from Dell etc would be like this. Also I don't want to give someone a machine with my name and email address on it.

If I could setup a computer in this way, could I activate it? Would it be fully working for test purposes or in reduced functionality mode?

Re email security code - how is the average Joe with one machine and one disk supposed to access the internet part way through install to get the code? It's not a problem for people like me with a houseful of computers.

sorry for noob questions (not a Windows 8 user)

We can try a few basic removal procedures and see if that clears it up
if not - we will move to the Virus/Malware forum for one of the Authorised experts to review

Please note the following:

I would suggest running some of the more common malware removal tools - this is NOT the full cleaning process, However, often the following may resolve some of the very common malware.

The following programs will remove the most common malware and so at the end of the process , the PC maybe clean. If not , then we need to move to the virus/malware forum for a specialist to review.
Do NOT install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners unless told to do so.
I would advise backing up all your important documents, personal data files and photos to an externl source DVD/CD or external hard drive.
Do not back up any Applications (programs). These should be re-installed from the original source CD(s) or website(s).
Be sure to follow the directions and run tools/scans in the order listed.
If you are getting any support on this issue from any other forum, please advise, as a) this wastes a lot of time and b) can cause issues on the PC as we do not know what else is being suggested.

Hi

I would like to know if it is a normal behaviour for windows to ask (if reboot) the username and password for the shared folders on my ubuntu computer.

It seems to forget them at each reboot, could this behaviour be modified ?

Thank you

A:username/password behaviour

Usually there is a Check Box on the Username/Password dialog window to Save/Remember the credentials. Are you checking that Check Box?

hello, I am in need to gain access into a machine requiring a username password.

is there any free program to use or way I can get into the machine?

the machine in question is my brother's who recently passed away. I am not in search of his data, but simply just trying to avoid having to entirely install the system, which I will if needed.

Thank-you,

I will be at a users workstation and try to access a resource as myself (logged in as them).

I go to that resource and it will asked my for a user name and password.

I enter it and have access -- to my knowledge, the only way to get rid of the cached creditials is to log off as the user and have them log back in.

Is there a command that will disable this without logging off.

Your should be able to use NET USE or Windows Explorer, Tools/Disconnect. Type NET USE /? for syntax

Well.. I've done it now!!! ( again)

I've recently ( thru the help of an experienced friend and after being attacked by some Trojan? ) re-installed XP Home. Things have been running smoothly even tho' it all looks different and not all files were backed up !

I had to clic the 'login' icon everytime I did something and came back to the desktop so we changed a couple settings in the Display:

I "restarted" last night and now a small window showed up saying I have to enter a username and password for Windows? When/did I during "re-install" have to establish a username and password for Windows??? Was that during the time just before I nodded off?

Regardless.. I can't make use of my "business" computer and it's costing me - none of my 'business' contacts have the email address to this computer.. Help!?

Thanks...

T Edwin

A:Windows username and password

I believe the only password it asks for during the install process is the Administrator account, which is not normally shown on regular log in. If you have a second account that you are using for this computer then, something or someone has set a password on it.

However, I cannot tell you how too bypass the password as that would be a security risk.

But I do believe if you contact a moderator, and send them a link too this topic, they may be able too help you. (I'd do it myself but I am not sure if I'd get in trouble or not. )

Hi.

Is that the screen Windows boots to, and what are you trying to achieve by what I assume, means you're editing the image?

Hi, I've searched this forum and i can't seem to find the right answer to my problem.

I have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows 7 Ultimate x86. My desktop is being primarily used as a media server with external hard drives attached to it. I was able to share my external hard drives over the network and my laptop was able to detect them. Right now "password protected sharing" is turned off, but I want to turn it on so that no one except me can access that network.

My question is, what is my user name and password? It asks me for my user name and password but I never set one up. Is there a way to find out what my user name and password is? And is there a way to change it so I can pick my own user name and password?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Many variables here. It looks like you are on a Domain (which doesnt make sense)

If this is a home network (aka Homegroup) there was a password when you created it.

If you are an admin and dont want to share with others you can also just change the rights of the other non admin users (IE admin can, normal users cannot Modify, read, or even see)
Need a bit of clarification

My frustration is with the window that pops up when I need to access something that requires a username and/or password. There is grayed out text that appears in each field to tell me what I should be entering there. There are applications such as Linksys routers that don't have a username (instructions are that "username" is left blank), just a password however there does not seem to be a way to leave the username blank--as soon as I move to the password field the damn message reapears. Today I had to make some changes to my router settings and had to use one of our XP boxes to get access, win-7 just refused to get shot of the word "username" in that field. Is there a way to deactivate this feature? Is it necessary to dumb down the process so much in assuming that the user can't figure out what the fields are for from the text to the left of them?

I've previously run netplwiz from the command prompt to disable the sign in process in Windows 10.
Which worked fine in build 10049 but in 10158 & 10166 I now get this error message

I don't understand how this message can appear as no password has been entered at this stage.
Pressing OK, or waiting 2 minutes results in this screen

Entering the PIN or password from the sign-in option continues the login process.
Apart from starting again from scratch, any ideas on how to correct this.

A:Username or password incorrect

I'm not sure why it does that but I could never get around it so I just leave the box checked.
I think by unchecking the box it's trying to initiate another user account or that 'built-in' one.

I'm using Frontpage 2002 with WindowsXP. It doesn't ask username and password when I try to open a web that is on-line because it has that info stored in memory. The web has been changed to a new server with a new username and password. I cannot access the files because FrontPage keeps trying to access with the old username and password. How can I change it?

FrontPage2002, on a computer running Windows98 ALWAYS asks for username and password to access an on-line web but with WindowsXP it has it stored somewhere. I've tried to find it but can't.

Any ideas?

I'm having great difficulty with passwords and usernames. I have been on this forum before but it took me ages to get logged in again as I had to reset my password and it took a long time to get the notification emails through. This happens all the time on numerous forums and things I have to log in to. It always wastes such a lot of my time.

I have heard about password wallets but don't really understand them. Can such a wallet help me both on my laptop and my Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Any recommendations and advice on this would be helpful. Otherwise I will just have to get lots of printouts listing all my usernames and passwords and store them all over the place, so I always have access to them.

I'm sure there must be a better and safer method.

A:username/password advice

I would keep a small pocket address book and store all site-username-password in that. Then be sure to carry that on you at all times and never leave it out of sight.

I have an old Dell laptop with Windows XP that I haven't used since 2009. I have some old music files stored there and would like to access them so I can transfer them to my current computer. Unfortunately I cannot remember the username or password to log on to the computer. I tried every combination of usernames and passwords I can remember using in the past 7 years or so, and no luck. Is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance.

We recently bought a new laptop. Upon starting it, it asked for a username and password, even though we had never set up any users or passwords on the computer. We tried the other option, signing in with a Microsoft account, but the computer still rejected it. Is there any way to get passed this?
