Touchpad And Keyboard Suddenly Stop Working

Q: Touchpad And Keyboard Suddenly Stop Working

A couple weeks ago while using my laptop, the keyboard and mouse pad suddenly froze up/lost power. No response to usb ports or cd drive. The screen stayed on, fan, power, even wifi connection stayed on, but couldn't get anything moving. The power button didn't respond so I had to unplug power and remove battery to shut it down. Worked fine after I restarted it.

Now, the same thing just happened again, on a DIFFERENT laptop with a different OS, browser, everything.

WTH?

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Compaq V6000 Vista Home, (32 bit) service pack 2. Computer about four years old. Motherboard replaced about four months ago because of graphic chips issue.

After a period of time / 30 min or so(?) (varies) the touchpad stops working. The blue power light continues to stay on, indicating the pad is still ?turned on? but the pad and buttons don't function. When the touchpad goes into this state, the icon on the bottom toolbar disappears. I also loose all sound, although the speaker icon remains.

When in this state the touchpad blue power light stays on and pushing the touchpad power button has no affect. (it should turn it off and illuminate an orange light)

The touch pad will also go into this state if the computer goes into the hibernate or sleep mode. One interesting thing, when in sleep or hibernate mode, you can awaken the computer by touching the touchpad surface, indicating to me that the pad is working until the computer comes ?awake.? After it wakes up, the blue blight is still on but the touchpad is inoperable.

If the touchpad is working, you can enter the sleep mode, return and the touchpad will continue to function normally.

To restore the touchpad and sound, the computer must be restarted. After that, everything works fine for a while. (time varies)

I can plug in a USB mouse to get around this issue.

I have done extensive research on Google. This issue has been happening at least since 2009. (although I didn't run across the sound issue mentioned) ... Read more

This has happened a lot since my upgrade to Windows 10, and it's really starting to get on my nerves. Seemingly randomly, my keyboard will stop responding to what I type, and my touchpad completely stops as well (no, I did not accidentally click to disable it). These problems will never resolve themselves on their own, but as soon as I reset the computer everything works again - to me, that sounded like a driver crash, but nope! I checked the driver menu and it told me everything was running just fine. What's even more strange is that I have the backlight keyboard enabled so that when I type, it lights up. And strangely, the keys still light up when I press them, so I know it's registering my typing SOME how.

You would also think that this would be a software problem since it fixes immediately upon reset, but I've noticed that this issue seems to crop up a lot right after I have moved my computer... I'm lost and I've scoured the internet for clues, but no one else seems to have this problem. Please help!

In order to possibly do testing on what is causing this (via suggestions hopefully, I've tried everything I can think of) I am purposely not resetting my computer (thankfully this is a touch screen, but this on-screen keyboard typing is obnoxious). Currently, both keyboard and touchpad don't work, but a usb mouse I use does (the computer is also set so that using the usb mouse does not disable the touchpad).

A:My laptop keyboard and touchpad stop working a minute after ...

This could be either hardware of software issues. To make sure, have your system updated, BIOS and drivers I recommend the use of HP SDM ( Softpaq Download manager - www.hp.com/go/sdm ) to update the system. When it runs and downloads the latest catalog,    * select 'check for updates' tab - if not the default when you run SDM    * install auto-checkmarked drivers, NOT the BIOS, at this point        it may occasioanly suggest 2 versions of dirvers - select the latest version only    * install any other (ONLY) drivers that show as Not Installed + Essential System Updates softpaq    * select BIOS update (if needed) by itself and Install        DO NOT SHUTDOWN if the laptop beeps a few times during the BIOS update !!! Let it continue to final Reboot

I work for HP. All opinions and comments are my own.

Hi guys,

I am experiencing an annoying issue with Windows 10 and my Cherry keyboard (Cherry eVolution Stream Multimedia Keyboard G85-23000), especially with the multimedia keys.

Upon a boot / reboot all the multimedia keys are working without issues: mute, volume up/down, etc.
However sometimes it stops working completely (completely random). I have no idea what is causing it or how to solve it.

When they stop working I cannot get them back working at all anymore, other then rebooting my PC. Obviously this is not a solution, because I have to close everything I was working on.

While typing this, I tried to unplug and plug back in the keyboard. Apparently that solves it also. Though this is not a good solution, because the backside of my PC is not easily reached.

Cherry keyboard don't have drivers available, so that's not a solution. Also removing the HID keyboard thing from hardware devices and reinstall / refresh doesn't provide a solution.

Anyone else experiencing this? Or has a solution for this problem? Would be great, because I am very used to using the multimedia keys (especially the volume keys).

I am using the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview version. Version 1511 (build 14257.1000).
Maybe it's an issue with the insider version, or something else. Or my hardware combination... I have no clue...

Thanks in advance.

A:Multimedia keys on keyboard stop working suddenly...

Well I still haven't resolved it. As a matter of fact; it's become worse.
As soon as I hit my volume keys (or a few times) they will get "stuck".

The only solution is a reboot or re-plugging my USB keyboard.

Suddenly all my usb devices, touchpad and even keyboard happened to be disabled. If I run into safe mode they are still not working so I simply cannot unlock them... I scanned for viruses using AVG Rescue CD updated and Bitdefender which for some reason didn't update but they didn't find any viruses. I don't know how to enable the devices because I cannot access device manager in any way . Usb keyboard/mouse aren't working. I tried them in Linux (Unutu livecd and they work there). The touchpad isn't effected by the fn on/off command on the keyboard. I don't want to use system recovery but find another easier way. Any ideas?

I have an Acer Aspire One D250 with a synaptics touchpad bought on March 20th which hasn't given me any problems till 3 days ago.

Friday, when I turned the computer on, the touchpad wasn't working. I tried Fn+F7 and nothing. The usual synaptics animated icon wasn't beside the clock. I went to the control panel>mouse>device settings and no device was listed there, while all the options were greyed out. I went to system>device manager and no "Mouse and other pointing devices" was listed. I went to Acer.pt (I'm from portugal) and downloaded the driver and installed it. The instalation went without problems and when I restarted the computer, the touchpad was still not working and nothing was listed on the device manager.

I called the Acer support line and the told me to restore the OS. I spent friday doing backups and I reinstalled Windows XP from Acer eRecovery Management. After all that, the touchpad wasn't working still.

Saturday was spent going to the store where I bought the netbook and trying to find a solution. Just as when I was going to give the netbook to warranty, a guy turned the computer on and the touchpad was magically working again.

I went home, all happy and warm and fuzzy inside.

Today, when I was copying my backups to the netbook again, I hit "cancel", and the icon next to the clock disappered and the touchpad stoped working again. Went to check, and nothing was listed on the device manager or on contro... Read more

I have a new Acer Aspire 1670 laptop which has worked fine for the past few weeks. However, I turned it on this morning (it worked fine last night) to find that my touchpad no longer works.

I don't feel this is a hardware issue in the sense that the touchpad has become unplugged from the internal PS/2 port, because the touchpad works for about 3-4 seconds after I log onto Windows/when the desktop loads up. That's the only time it works, it doesn't even work at the welcome/logon screen.

After those 3-4 seconds, something obviously happens that's preventing it from working.

I thought it might be my Wacom Graphire II graphics tablet, which is plugged in via USB 2. However, my touchpad and tablet have worked fine together for the past few weeks and have never caused any problems.

I unplugged the tablet, and uninstalled the tablet and touchpad drivers. I then rebooted, and - navigating around with the keyboard - reinstalled the touchpad drivers and rebooted. It still won't work.

Any ideas?

Two things:

1. Does the touchpad have an indicator light that shows you when it is activated? The one on my HP does.

2. Is there an On/Off button above the touchpad...there is on my HP. Did you accidently turn it OFF

I went to use my laptop today, and I discovered that the touchpad has stopped working. In fact, I was unable to even get past the sign-on screen, and if it weren't for the fact that I got a mouse arrow with a plug-in USB mouse, the laptop would be completely dead to me.

My son uses the laptop for Minecraft gaming, but I don't think that has anything to do with this. Even a reboot didn't change anything. I wonder if a Windows update screwed something up (again)? I'm at a loss. I'm not always where I can set up a physical mouse to use - and frankly I don't want to have to.

Any suggestions?

A:My Toshiba Satellite touchpad suddenly stopped working

Found the solution. When I pressed the F5 button (not Fn + F5), I got a popup that said "touchpad disabled." When I pressed it again, it said "touchpad enabled." I unplugged my USB mouse and tried again, and it's now working. What a screwed up design that allows a user to accidentally disable one's touchpad with an accidental press of the F5 key. Then you have to research the problem before figuring out the problem. Someone in the Toshiba laptop design department should be fired.

Keyboard and mouse stop working

Hi, I'm having some major problems with my Dell Dimension 8400 which runs on Windows XP.
It all started with some files found and replaced during chkdsk.
My PC was working fine yesterday, but today when I turned it on the problem started.
At first, everything is okay. Then, after the initial Windows page the screen goes black and a gray bar appears at the bottom. At this point, the keyboard and mouse shut off (lights go off) and stop working. Once the gray bar has finished loading (1-2 seconds), windows continues to start as usual. The only problem is when I get to the log in screen (where I have multiple user accounts) I cannot choose one to log on with because the keyboard and mouse do not work. I have tried unplugging them and putting them in the USB slot instead but to no avail. I cannot run safemode or anything because the same login screen comes up.
I tried hitting F12 initially and ran hard drive diagnostics which gave me the alarming result:
"Drive 0: ST3160023AS - FAIL - Return Code 7
Drive 2: No device"
Drive 4...my CD drive...diagnostics not supported
Drive 5...my DVD drive...diagnostics not supported

Any Suggestions? Please help!

Thanks in advance.

A:Keyboard and mouse stop working AND STOP 0X0000007B

Please follow the steps here for the Stop 0x0000007B error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

As you will note, one cause can be a boot sector virus.

Return Code 7 can indicate hard drive failure. Drive 0 is the hard drive.

As for CHKDSK replacing files and causing this problem, it's not likely. Even IF you check both options- fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, it didn't 'cause' the problem, it just made it more evident.

Backup everything you do not want to lose and consider replacing the hard drive.

As you can see there are multiple problems that have come up in this notebook. I recently reinstalled windows 10 to solve some other problems. The installation went perfect and afterward everything seemed to work fine. When my wife turned it on the blue BIOS screen came on (as it did before the installation) and I was unable to use the touchpad, mouse or arrow keys to move the selection. I rebooted and it started up fine only the keyboard did not work. I had to use the onscreen keyboard to log in. Once inside, sometimes the keyboard works and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried using the f6 to toggle the touchpad on but it didn't work. The keyboard is touch and go and now the blue screen BIOS sometimes comes up when the computer is started. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've searched for solutions and haven't been able to find anything that works to solve these problems. I've uninstalled the drivers and rebooted for a fresh re-install of the drivers but that only temporarily fixes the problem. Thank you.

Hi,

Something very strange happened to me today. I turned on my computer, and everything was working as normal. Then I played Amnesi (no idea if this has anything to do with it, but Im mentioning everything I can think of), and later I wanted to listen to some music. At that point, I was receiving no sound on my headphones. I didn't have time to solve the problem there and then, so I turned of my computer, and a few hours later I turned it back on again, only to discover that the problem was still there. I tested my headphones on another computer, and they are fine. I check all my audio settings, and nothing is muted. I also checked someone else's headphone on my computer, and got no sound.

What is going on?? Is my sound card not working? Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I just discovered that my taskbar is displaying the message: No audio output devices installed. Does this have anything to do with it? I think it does.

Hey guys!

Strange thing just occurred to my computer. I heard the sound you get when hardware has been disconnected from your computer, and immeidately, my mouse and keyboard (both USB) stopped working.

Now, when I plug the mouse in, the red light at the bottom of the mouse turns on, so I am pretty sure that the USB is providing power to the device although windows doesn't seem to be recognising it.

I tried uninstalling the USB drivers through the device manager, and then do a scan for new hardware, but this did not fix the problem. My hardware is all up to date so I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. All my other USB ports seem to be behaving similarly.

I also tried doing a full cold shutdown with a power cycle but that didn't help as well.

I'm tempted to say that it's a software-related issue with windows.

Any help/suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks guys

Recently, I tried to connect something to a USB port, but they suddenly stopped working. I thought it was just the front 2 that were the problem, but then I tried to use my printer and since it's plugged in the back I thought the 2 USB ports in the back would work, but there was not connection to the printer. Now all 4 USB ports don't work. The wierd part is that when I try to plug in a USB jump drive, a light does blink on the jump drive for a split second so it seems like there's still power. I've uninstalled the USB stuff in device manager and rebooted, the computer does recognize the ports and said they were working properly, but the devices I plug in still don't work. Is there anything else that can be done about this problem? I know my jump drive and printer still work.

I've bought Thinkpads for more than a decade but I still see this problem being reported for the T470 so Lenovo can't or won't bother to fix this. Any suggestions for a different brand and model? I do like the trackpoint so does that mean Dell is my only alternative?

Welcome!

Rest assured, if anyone posts in this thread, it will be to help you.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before the troubles.

Then try installing Kaspersky again. If the problem happens again, do another system restore, and install Microsoft Security Essentials instead.

The tap function of my 2year old Dell 600m stop working last week. Every time I went to mouse settings and change anything, it start working. But after a standby, it stop working again. It also works on the login screen, but after loading all the settings it stops working.
It seems to my like a software driver problem. Any input is appreciated.

Unfortunately, the trackpad and touchpad of my T460p stop working intermittently. The problem seems to occur after the laptop is going into hibernation. When it boots up afterwards, neither the trackpad nor the touchpad or the mouse buttons work, and the device manager shows the Synaptics device having a hardware issue. The problem persists when rebooting the system and even when using a different operation system (e.g. Ubuntu via a Live USB). I tried upgrading the Synaptics drivers (v19.0.19.1), which does not solve the problem though. I also tried different driver versions (e.g. the ones offered on the Lenovo site), without success. I encountered this problem both on Windows 10 Home & Windows 10 Enterprise Edition, as well as various Linux flavors (Ubuntu, Fedora). The only workaround that I found is to shut down the laptop, remove the battery and reboot it afterwards, which seems to reset the faulty state the touchpad is in. I strongly suspect that this is a problem with the firmware of either the mainboard or the Synpatics device itself, which puts it into an invalid state when going into hibernation. For now, I disabled hibernation mode, which avoids the problem but is not ideal of course. Did someone else run into this problem? Any ideas how to permanently fix this? I'm very happy with the T460p otherwise but this problem just drives me crazy as it's impossible to use a laptop without touchpad/trackpad when traveling.

Hi guys,

My NEW PC's two front USB 2.0 ports suddenly don't work. It was OK when i first installed Win 8 on it, but since window update, the front ones just don't work anymore. I couldn't charge my phone using USB & the external HHD just keep flashing & beeping (no power source apparently upon googling). What happened? I didn't think i changed anything? Why suddenly stop working then? How can i troubleshoot? Would hate to bring the whole PC down to the local shop due to such minor issue. Appreciate your input. Thanks!

Given the system is only a few days old, I suggest that you reinstall Windows 7 using your recovery DVD or the HDD recovery partition.

Leave the P2P apps out after new OS install.

The internet occasionaly stop working on my vista. This is happening since I've installed Vista on my PC. I will try to describe it more deeply:

I am connecting to the internet with an ADSL modem (got both usb and ethernet version, same thing happens on both) using PPPoE protocol (on ethernet one) or PPPoA (on usb one). So the problem always occurs after downloading something for a ver long time: like leaving my PC for 5h with torrent client that is dowloading some huge demo of a game. When I am back I can see its still downloading but I cant connet to any website, cant use ftp, nor telnet, but can do ping the websites without any problem (with low latency results). No matter what program I want to try, its not allowing me to connect to any websites. This is very weird because I can see torrent client is still downloading, and MSN messanger is still conencted and I can talk to friends, but.... now really bizzare thing happens: If I exit the torrent client, and do the same with MSN, then cannot reconnect Looks like all opened connection arent "infected" with this issue but once I close them and try to re-establish, it wont allow me. I am sure this is not my firewall (im using the one built-in windows) because I can disable it and it doesnt help. So basicaly this is it. Oh, and the only thing that can unlock my internet is to re-boot my pc completly.

Not sure if its connected but my system event log is spammed with this event id: 1103 "Your computer was suc... Read more

Hi,
I'm new here

I have two games that seem to abruptly stop working after I I click the play button-minecraft and planetside 2. I have recently installed both, and unistalled both however this makes no difference. I have changed my firewall settings and the same still keep same happening. I also have problems with itunes along a similar line where I would click the icon and then it would crash.

Have I missed something and how do I fix it?
