File Explorer not showing recent folders

Q: File Explorer not showing recent folders

Here is my process. I scan documents onto my pc and save them to a file on my network drive. Then, I need to email these pdfs to other employees. I used to open Outlook, create a new email then click on "attach file". I would then get a drop down menu of the recent files I've worked with. There were some files on this recent list that I wanted to remove. I couldn't figure out how to remove only the select one or two files, so I cleared the history. Now, the files I view are not being saved to this drop down menu. I have to climb through 4 levels of files to get to the one document I need. How can I get File Explorer (not Windows Explorer) to start saving my recent activity again?

Preferred Solution: File Explorer not showing recent folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:File Explorer isn't showing recent files

Hi, there may be other consequences if your disk has been affected, or you may be very lucky and a small part of your registry has been corrupted.

A possible solution to your immediate problem is here:
File Explorer Recent Files and Frequent Folders groups are missing - Microsoft Community
- basically, create another user, and copy the relevant part of the registry back to your original user's registry.

I would also recommend you run
chkdsk C: /F
from an elevated command prompt
and also
SFC /scannow

just to check all is (probably) well.

Here's a very useful method which will help you avoid a great deal of difficulty- strongly recommended and used by most here:

Start using disk imaging. Regularly. Before any major change, and after a big change or a series of smaller changes. System Restore isn't enough.. it can help sometimes, but only if you turn it on (it's off by default.. absurd).

With disk images you
a. Can restore your disk/partition in a defined time (e.g 20 to 40 mins).
b. Have a full backup - can extract files.
c. Can use them to rebuild your system on a new HDD (e.g.)
d. Have peace of mind (most important!)

Get a copy of Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper (both have free options). The first is more geeky and a cut down version of a commercial product - no incremental backup. The 2nd is more straightforward, offering both differential and incremental backups. (You can read about those yourself if unsure).

I've recently reinstalled Windows 8 and the jumplist for File Explorer now only shows Frequent instead of Recent. There's a load of instructions for Windows 7 and 10 but I can't find any help for changing the Windows 8 jumplist to show Recent instead of Frequent?

A:File Explorer jumplist showing Frequent not Recent

The toggle for this should be in the taskbar properties. Right click on the taskbar and go to properties.

There should be a tab for jumplists and a checkbox for recent items.

So File Explorer Quick Access shows Recent Folders, because I pinned it to be there:

But, when you go to "Save as" dialog box, Recent Folders inexplicably disappears from Quick Access:

Why is that? How can I fix it so that "Save as" and "Open" show Recent Folders in Quick Access in navigation pane?

A:File Explorer Quick Access has Recent Folders pinned but it vanishes..

You can "Pin to Quick Access" the "Recent" folder in Windows 10. But the "Recent" folder is hidden when you "Save As" from an application, which is very annoying. So here is the fix to get Recent Items showing in Save As dialog boxes:

1) Optional step: In File Explorer, if you have already pinned the "Recent" folder to Quick Access, right-click "Recent" and select "Unpin from Quick Access"
2) Start a Command Prompt
3) Copy and paste the entire following line into the Command Prompt, and then press Enter:
mklink /j "%USERPROFILE%\Recent Items" %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent
4) Close the Command Prompt window
5) Back to File Explorer, either click on your Username under Desktop, or browse to C:\Users\<username>
6) You'll notice there is a new yellow shortcut named "Recent Items". Right-click it and choose "Pin to Quick Access"
7) "Recent Items" will now appear under Quick Access.
8) "Recent Items" will also now appear under Quick Access when you use the "Save As" dialog box from any Windows 10 application.
All done!

Hey there! (Noob to the forums, wasn't sure where to post to begin with. Sorry if it's the wrong subject thread!)

Basically... when I go to "Choose file" anywhere online, whether it be a file or uploading a picture; my folders and C: disk.. pretty much everything on the left side of the Windows Explorer doesn't show up.

I ran a virus scan not just three days ago? Nothing showed up. Re-running another one... and nothing has yet to show up.

The problem is in the purple rectangle in the attachment. (Did the same exact thing when I was uploading this picture).

Hello Guys,

when I used to go to "recent places" from the favourites menu from file explorer it used to give me a list of the most recently opened files, now it gives me the folder of the file opened instead of the file. I recently upgraded to Win 8.1 from 8 so it might be a change made there.

e.g if I open a file called text.txt in c:/Spare folder in recent places it used to add text.txt, it now shows the spare folder instead!

Could someone please have a look at there recent places to see if it's the same.

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

I'm having an issue with Windows Explorer changing from one library directory to another on the recent folders list. Anytime I open a file in a new folder or library, it replaces the existing folder link with the new library and/or folder, instead of creating a new shortcut to the most recently accessed folder. It used to create a new link in the list every time I accessed a new folder! Now the link actually switches between libraries, when I move from one to another; i.e. I just opened a file from the Pictures library, and then one from the Videos library. The link to the Pictures library is immediately replaced by the one for Videos. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not the link is pinned to the list.

Everything worked fine until yesterday when I switched the connection on my external hard drive from the USB on my Windows 7 desktop to the USB on my Netgear R6300 router, so that I could network my files to another HP desktop and an HP laptop, both of which are running Windows 10, as well as my Kindle Fire. When I changed the physical configuration of the network, obviously my existing links were no longer valid, so I mass deleted all of them so that I could just start over with the new network path. Now, every time I open a file from a new folder or library, I lose the one I accessed earlier. The recent items feature is enabled in the Start Menu tab in Task Bar and Start Menu Properties box. It doesn't seem to affect any of the files/folders I have synced to Google Dri... Read more

When I connect my Android phone to my computer via USB to access storage, it treats all the folders as music folders - this means that in Details view I don't get "date modified" but "track number", "artist", "album", etc.. despite this being completely irrelevant to the content of all but a single folder on the phone.

Is there any way of telling Windows that these are NOT music folders?

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

Much as I like Windows 10 (despite an unnecessarily difficult installation), I'm horrified to find that they have apparently abandoned the 'Favorites' and 'Recent places' folders - which I used constantly and had grown to love.
Are they hiding them somewhere? Is there a way to restore/find them? Have I missed something obvious?
(I can't believe that they would be so stupid as to get rid of them: 'recent files' and 'Frequent folders' are good, but not quite as useful...).

They are both in "Quick Access" the first item on the Navigation Pane.

I was testing my FTP server tonight and when I connect to the home directory there's two folders that show up (RECYCLER and System Volume Information) in the home directory that shouldn't be there. When I go into my home directory in Windows Explorer these folders don't show up there, even if I choose to show the hidden files. If I can't get these folders to show up in Windows Explorer I can't exclude them from showing up in my FTP Server software. I'm having a very bizarre issue on a laptop running Windows 7. Windows explorer is showing all items as the wrong size, it's as if the math is off by a few 0s. For example an outlook file is showing up a 548 GB which clearly isn't possible. I looked up the
file on another computer and it was actually 5.48 GB. Every file on the computer shows up that way. It also doesn't matter if I'm looking at a file on the local drive or on a mapped drive, it still shows the incorrect value. I've never run into something like
this before and haven't had much luck finding anything on Google either. Has anyone seen something like this before or have an idea for how to change the math behind explorer? If that is even what needs to be changed.

As an extra note, kind of funny but even the transfer rate is buggered up, the laptop is transferring files from a mapped drive at a miraculous 522 MB/s, sure do wish my computer could move that fast.

Suddenly the Recent Items list accessible from the Start menu is showing the first 15 items in some large alphabetical list of items accessed in the past. Previously it had been showing the most recent (I'm sure) 10 (I think) in alphabetical order, which is the way I understand it's intended to work.

Now, for example, if I empty the list and then access 16 files beginning with the first 16 letters of the alphabet, in order, the 16th doesn't show up at all, even though it was the one most recently accessed. When I look in \Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent, the entries are sorted by date in descending order, so that the file beginning with the 16th letter is at the top, even though it doesn't even appear in the Start menu Recent Items list.

I first noticed this problem after I found a PC Magazine article on the best free software, downloaded a bunch, and installed three: BinaryFortress fileseek, IObit Uninstaller, and SlimWare SlimCleaner. I expect that one of them made some subtle registry tweak which I have to change back. I'm least suspicious of fileseek, and most suspicious of SlimCleaner. My hunch is based on the degree of utility function each is alleged to have.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Has the system done any Freezes or Bluescreens? If so, you may wanna scan your hard drive for problems, Don't use SCANDISK- Download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, burn it and boot to it.

Is your hard drive mechanical or is it SSD? Assuming it is mechanical, in the Hiren's Boot Screen, choose Dos Programs, and Hard Drive Tools. You can use either GWscan or the Manufacturer's Drive Scanning tool, run a quick check and see if it detects "Read Element Failure" - If it does, then let the program fix it, should take about an hour to run through the whole drive.

After that, boot up again, and run a CHKDSK from within Windows and let that run fully if it needs to, then see if it is still doing what you described. If it does, we'll look for other causes.

Upon investigation I seen the drives were in fact missing so I did a gpupdate to refresh the group policies which normally fixes the problem. This time it didn't, my backup plan is normally to manually map the drives needed until we figure why the group policy is not working.

Here is where things get weird:

When I go to map the drives, they are all already mapped. Then I find out from the user that they are all showing up correctly through their applications such as MS Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. They can also access all of their files normally through each app. But they are not showing up in file explorer when we go to 'this PC'. A reboot normally fixes the problem though the user is starting to get a little annoyed of having to reboot each time.

Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?

Hi all,

Built my new computer yesterday and installed Windows 7 64 bit, Enterprise.

I have noticed that the file type icons aren't showing in explorer, while little it is extremely annoying as when searching for an excel document for example I just look for the icon.
It seems to work for some icons and not others- as shown in the image below.

Is there any fix for this?

I am hoping that somewhere out there may be able to assist with my problem as I have exhausted countless hours on the various Forums and in tweaking my system with no result to date.
The problem is that on my Home Network (Private) my main PC cannot ?see? the other devices on the network. I have two laptops, printer and Samba drive (on my D-Link Router) and the only item that shows up is my own PC.
The other PC running Win 10 pro can see ALL devices on the network.
I can reach the other devices by entering \\computername and then access the various drives and documents on the device but my PC will not display them using File Explorer.
Also, I have HomeGroup setup and working OK on both PC?s.
My PC is running Win 10 Home Version 1511 Build 10586.36 64bit along with the MS Office Suite 2013.
The solutions tried without success so far include:
Netsh winsock reset
Netsh int ip reset
Uninstalled Client for Microsoft Networks then reinstalled
Uninstalled the Adaptor drivers the reinstalled
Checked the registry settings to ensure that the Network Category is correctly set to 1 (Private)
Checked and confirmed that all the required Services are running ? these include:

DHCP ClientDiagnostic Policy ServiceDiagnostic Service HostDiagnostic System HostDNS ClientPeer NetworkingServer
plus a few others that I can?t recall.
Deleted all programs from Programs and Features that are not recognized or not required.

A:Network Devices not Showing with File Explorer

The fall update broke the SMB (Server Message Block) component of the OS. Below is a work around that will fix your issue until such time as Microsoft patches this issue.
1. Open an administrator cmd prompt.
2. type the following: (press Enter after each line)

sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= disabled

then Restart the computer

To reverse this change and re-enable SMBv3 run the following commands at at the elevated command prompt

sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb10/mrxsmb20/nsi
sc.exe config mrxsmb20 start= auto

then Restart the computer

I have just upgraded to win8 pro 64 and having major issues.

I upgraded from win 7 so it kept all my program's and settings. I had my synology ds209 NAS video, music a d download folder mapped to access through file explorer and it all worked perfectly. Since the upgrade I can access music and video fine but not the download folder??

If I try and map it again it does t even see my NAS under network but it appears under computer as a media device!

Anyone got any ideas?

A:Can't map certain folders or access NAS in file explorer

After you've mapped the Network drive, have a look at your music folder and look at the permissions, you'll see they're different to the download folder. Set the permissions on your download folder to match those on the music folder, hopefully that works.

I've been thinking, that if the above doesn't work, try to create a new library folder called something like downloads2 on the NAS.

for some reason in my "D" Drive there are duplicate folders for music videos downloads documents under Basem Khawaja(my name ,user's folder? )this user's folder is listed or opens up when I click on my name on the desktop folder(Basem Khawaja) also they are listed separately too . I would like to just keep only one of them . If I delete the duplicate individual folder i.e.VIDEOS that will delete the VIDEOS folder that is listed in the Basem Khawaja Folder as well.

For some reason Windows Explorer is only my NAS devices and other computers as Media devices. Previously it showed all of the devices under "Computers".  It bad enough that Explorer claims the one NAS has nothing but empty folders when in
fact it's holding almost a terabyte of data, but to completely "delete" all units from being seen? What gives?

I'm on a WIndows 10 Pro PC accessing a linux server with samba etc installed and working well (visible via Homegroup to both Android and Windows 7 pro). From the Win 10 box, if I type the name of the server in Windows File Explorer, then the shares from the server show up without issue. However, if I go into the Network folder, it does not see the linux servers - even though they are correctly configured for the correct homegroup. My windows 7 machines can see the servers in "network" as can my android devices.
Here's a screenshot. Note, the red arrows show what displays in Network folder (red arrows). If I click on the Server Name (HunterNAS in this case), the server shares are displayed and it shows up in the Network folder (blue arrows). Even after making the successful connection, display of another file explorer window > Network folder displays no linux server shares...

Any ideas?

A:Linux SMB not showing up in File Explorer (but can be accessed direct)

You have to disable smb 2 & 3 in Windows 10. Microsoft is using the excuse that they made changes with those two protocols, to protect the OS. That is not the case.

When accessing a folder name either in the Navigation pane or the body of the Windows File Explorer (overtype or F2 Edit), I get a message that it can rename a folder that is open. No matter how I access the folder, it is always considered "open"
and I get that message. How can I avoid this situation and rename a folder?
