Sleep button action -> Shut Down, HOW?

Q: Sleep button action -> Shut Down, HOW?

Hello. I have a laptop and a desktop computers, both running Windows 7 Pro x64. On laptop, I can set the sleep button to Shut Down (I guess, I don't have the laptop here now so I cannot confirm). I would like to set the DESKTOP computer's sleep button action
to Shut Down, but this option is not available (I have disabled hibernation, so sleep is the only option in advanced power settings -> sleep button action for me). I don't have a Power button on my keyboard nor on the remote control,
only Sleep buttons and I do not want to use S1 nor S3. I want the computer to shut down when I press these buttons. Is there a way? Registry etc?
Thank you in advance for your kind replies.
Tomas.

Preferred Solution: Sleep button action -> Shut Down, HOW?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Sleep button action -> Shut Down, HOW?

Hi Tomas
If you are referring to the Start/Power Button.
Right click the Start Button and select Properties.
In the Power Button action drop down menu, select the Shut down option.
Apply/OK.

Why can't I make my sleep button power down my computer. The option in power mangement missing. Is there a way to change this eg. through regedit?

A:Make sleep button shut down windows 7

I think that this is because the sleep button is only intended for that, sleep, as the options your screen grab show are the same as on my computer. However the power button can have many different functionalities.

Hi Everyone, A couple days ago I noticed that my middle mouse button which I use for scrolling started to activate the Context Menu (aka anytime you right-click, a menu pops up). Then I noticed that my right-button will also activate scrolling as well. Is this a hardware issue? I've already tried reinstalling the drivers and played around with the settings to no avail!  Anyone experience a similar issue? Cheers,

This just started a couple days ago and I can't figure out why. I haven't installed any new software or messed with any relevant settings that I can remember. As the title says, clicking Start -> Shut Down puts it to sleep. I've checked the Power options in Control Panel and all of that looks right. Thanks for the help!

That is an odd one, maybe try resetting the power plan you`re using to defaults.

And it wouldn`t hurt to run a system file check, the link is below.

You could try a system restore to about a week ago.

Hi. Start menu -> I can only see shut down, or sleep, depending on how it's configured, but to access other power options I have to click on the small white arrow to the right of the power button.

So if the default setting of the big button is shutdown then it's a hassle to choose sleep because I have to click on the oh so small button arrow thing.

There's loads of room at the bottom right of my start menu so please tell me how to have a shutdown button AND a sleep button, because I frequently use both functions and don't want to have to choose only one for quick access. Cheers

Friend of mine has got problem with his desktop (XP SP2) , when he starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank (i.e he can not see the login name for users).

What he used to do: is press the sleep button on the wireless keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box.

After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users.

He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop

Hi every one,
Recently I purchased new PC,
After installing windows XP Pro SP3 I found that there is a missing button in Power option properties. The missing button is (When I press the sleep button on my computer), I can find only (When I press the power button on my computer).
My system configuration is as follow
Mother board Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Rev 1.1
My graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 5670
Windows XP SP3
RAM 4Gb Kingston DDRII
CPU Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz
It worth saying that I can shutdown, hibernate or put my PC into sleep mode, so the functions are working but only the button is missing.
I will appreciated very much if some can advise me how to restore the missing button. Is there some option in BIOS that will enable this button?
I contacted Gigabyte customer support, but they directed me to Microsoft, I also contacted ATI but they directed me to Microsoft or BIOS settings. In my BIOS I can't find any option that may affect this button. Any advise will be appreciated
Best regards

A:[SOLVED] Button of (When I press sleep button) is not available in my Power option pr

Does the case actually have a separate Sleep Button? I suspect it's not even connected, as the motherboard manual doesn't show a connection for a Sleep Button, only a Power Button.
Windows Power Options won't list it, as it doesn't exist.

If you have a Sleep Button on the keyboard, it might not be listed in Power Options either. That would be up to the Driver software to add that option. You may have to use the software that came with the keyboard to configure the sleep button on the keyboard.

Whenever I press the sleep button on my computer, or when I leave it idle and it goes to sleep by itself, I get a blue screen of death. I would really like to solve this issue and it would be great if someone was able to help me ...

Now, this computer came with an AMD video card, but I uninstalled those drivers and took out the video card and installed a GTX 570 from EVGA. The drivers are up to date, so I am pretty sure the new hardware is installed correctly. Furthermore, it was not doing this for the first few months of having the video card installed. This is very recent, so I don't understand what it could be...

I have been struggling with this for weeks now.I have a brand new Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Gen laptop. Windows 10.Upon delivery I had noticed that the laptop woke by mouse or keyboard stroke and there was NO power management tab in device manager mouse/keyboard (which usually allows to unflag the option).I had managed to fix it through a mix of BIOS options, registry editor etc. A few days ago I had a problem with connecting HDMI monitor. I have thus updated the driver of Intel UHD Graphics 620. The monitor now works properly, but...I am back in trouble with the sleep option. Currently there is no sleep among the options in the power button. There is no sleep option in power options. If I go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings,  and select "Change settings that are currently unavailable" there is no sleep checkbox. Already tried:- Regedig Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power, CsEnabled is set to 0.- Edit group policy. All policies relating to sleep are set as "Not configured".- Reinstalled drivers for Intel UHD Graphics 620, no improvement. Any way to go back to previous driver? Any help? Thanks

And from that next page, I am then supposed to be able to click on a green action button that redirects me to the website of the specific offer I chose. However there is no button anywhere that page. In fact there is no button or anything that allows me to make any further action from that page. Once I'm at that page, I'm stuck and can't do anything else but back out and start over, just to run into the same scenario over again! Hi everyone, I have a very weird error here...
My PC is a P4, 3,4GHZ, 1GB RAM, Radeon x800xl running WIN XP with SP2
But the real problem is my keyboard... I got an a4 tech kehyboard AntiRSI keyboard, and a few minutes ago while I pressed alt+tab to get out of a game (PES5) it went in stand by mode....and the problem is I can't even get out of it...
I restarted, went in windows again and tried to see what proccesses are running and pressed ctrl + alt + delete and it went in stand by again...
Anyway I founded that this is caused when pressing the left ALT button...My pc seems to confuse it as my sleep button ( I tested this by going in Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced and played with the "When I press my sleep button on my computer" and selected different options and when I pressed the left alt button it did what I selected in there )

Does anyone know what's the cause of this and how I can fix it?

By not identifying your HP notebook you are not helping either one of us. Post the product number or the complete product name in your next response. Are you using some internet protection software? Did this happen after some event, such as clicking on a mail from someone you don't know or a website button? I suggest using System Restore and selecting a system checkpoint dated before the issues began. Are you familiar with the system restore utility that is part of Windows? If you are not, then perhaps you should consider using the USB recovery media that you should have created by now. You can use it to return you PC to the state it was in when it was delivered to you. Another option is to use Reset.

Hello Group,

Powerpoint 2007 PC Vista

Single slide with video selection menu

Playing video, full screen, kiosk mode.

Inserted a return arrow in lower right corner with action to restart video selection menu slide, so that user can interupt video and make another selection if desired.

The problem: the arrow is not visible. How to make the arrow visible during a full screen video play?

Some sort of layering technique, with the arrow on top? Or somehow change full screen pixel dimensions to slightly smaller than physical full screen size so that the return arrow can be seen ?

Hope someone can help ... thanks for looking in.

Charles

A:Powerpoint 2007: Action button not visible during video

I don't think there's an option to bring anything in front of the movie while it's playing in fullscreen mode
But you can place your movies each on a separate slide, have them run (automatically non-full screen mode), resize each one so that it covers most of the slide leaving a small empty part of the slide for a button that will hyperlink to the first slide

In the first slide, put thumbnails for the movies, each one of hyperlinking to the slide where that movie is, so it will give you the effect you're looking for

Hope this helps

Is there any way to use this button for something else than MaxxAudio EQ? It's one of the 3 additional QuickSet (?) buttons.
Not only there are better apps, but only one of the setups gives natural sound (Music) and changing doesn't help.
But that's not an issue here. I would love to use it to start any other app/script, but there is not mapping apps that support them and even if they could (like SharpKeys) the button is probably seen as unknown...

Anyone managed to do it? Or is it impossible?

Hello,
I am having to use window.name to check against a value saved in the session. When there is a mismatch, the page is like disabled. It has been working fine in most cases (postback, refresh etc), but recently it has been found that when a file is downloaded
and the browser back button is clicked the check fails in IE11. It is because until the onunload the window.name is retained. But after the return from server code, in onload the window.name is blanked out. The server resets the window.name after a download
when back button is clicked.
This does not happen in chrome or firefox. and maybe even the older versions of IE. Can you please check if this is the expected behavior.
Thanks,

Please let me know the difference between sleep button and power button

Is sleep button the one which will be on the keyboard?

On the CPU there will 2 buttons one will be to start the computer and another one to restart computer?

Can these buttons be used to work like to enter in sleep mode, hibernate mode etc(Making changes in power options in control panel)

I'm having windows 7 computer

A:Power button and sleep button

sleep buttons depend on the manufacturers to where they go. most laptops sleep function is assigned to an F key and used in conjuction with the function or "fn" button. usually on F2 or F3.
These buttons are not programmable via the power options in control panel.

if its a desktop and doesnt have a dedicated sleep button you can reasign the task to either the restart or power button within control panel and or set it to sleep/hybernate after a given time.

I've been experience some problems with my computer recently where usually when I'm playing a video game, even simple video games like Terraria, I will usually hear my physical computer beep three times, the screen will freeze, and I won't be able to do anything else. This will occur at random moments in the game, no specific action triggers it. I read that it might have something to do with playing in fullscreen mode, so I started playing games in fullscreen windowed but the problem still persists. I have a three year old Alienware Desktop computer, so the games that I am playing shouldn't be something that my system can't handle. We need more information about your system than what you've provided. Hence, please follow these BSOD posting instructions and attach the requested files by replying to this topic. You may skip the part of step three where it instructs you to create a new topic, since you already have a topic here. There's no need to create another topic.  When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your computer? If it's three years old there should be a decent amount of dust inside the case, which could be related to the freezes (overheating). Get yourself some compressed air (cheap at Walmart, though other places sell them too) and blow out as much dust as possible. While waiting for a response to your log files, please run these hardware diagnostics. You'll want to run them all, and monitor your temps with one of the tools listed on the page.Thank you.Regards,bwv848

My power button action random changed to "shut down" a few days ago. It used to be lock.

I accidentally clicked it at the time and couldn't abort shutdown in time.

Computer shut down and installed windows updates (I don't recall having seen pending updates, but could have missed it).

Now this button is stuck on "shut down"... and it has the shield mark thing beside it.

Any idea what this means?

A:Power button button forced to "Shut down"

The shield icon is a part of windows update; and basically means if you tell the system to shut down; before it shuts down; it will install the updates first; and if you boot back up after it shuts down; before you get to the logon screen; it may say windows is configuring updates.

Have a new lap top with Vista loaded. When shutting down there does not appear to be a dedicated shut down button. When I click on the round Microsoft icon (bottom left) There appears 3 options

1.Putting computer in a 'low power state' (whatever that is)
2.Locking computer
3.There is a small arrow which when clicked gives various options (switch user, log off etc) which includes 'Shut Down'

Surely there is a shorter way of shutting down than this. In XP clicking on the 'Start' icon produced a red shut down button.

Strangely when I log on there is a red shut down button (the welcome screen).

Any help would be appreciated.

the shut down button in my windows does not work

when I click ctrl+F4 or chose the shut down button for start menu it appears to me but it does not matter how many time I click it notion happens

in the safe mode it work properly

what should I do?

A:shut down button

How about this? ONE CLICK SHUTDOWN.

Navigate to your Desktop.
On the Desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut).
You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.

Enter one of these as the path: SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace "C" with the correct letter of the hard drive.
Click the "Next" button.
Name the shortcut and click the "Finish" button.
Now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut and you're done. Also, if you want to make life better and faster, you can right-click the new shortcut you just made, go to Properties, and type in X (or whatever letter) in the Shortcut Key box.

Okay, suddenly my Shutdown button in the Start menu disappeared (Win 7). Isn't there a registry entry or something that controls this? I've run Anti-MalWare to check for a trojan or anything that might have caused it, but my machine reports clean.

I don't want to create custom buttons, I just want the "factory" button back. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hello Steve Spurlock, welcome to Seven Forums!

Your best first option may be to check the file integrity of Windows 7, have a look at the tutorial at the link below; be sure to post back to keep us informed!

Hi guys, the last 3 days I have not been able to shut down my pc, when I press the shutdown/restart button nothing happens. I also get no response from anything if I right click on the start button and try to use any of the options in the menu the device manager, control panel nothing from the right click menu on the start button reacts when I press it. Even when I press power from the right side on the settings menu from the charms, shutdown/restart nothing happens. I have not made any changes to the pc recently. There is nothing in event viewer its just nothing happens the computer keeps working like I never pressed anything...I tried to do a search on this and I really didnt come up with anyone having the same problem. The only way I can shut the PC off is by holding down the power button... Thanks guys...

A:no response from shut down/restart button

When choosing Shutdown from the charms Power setting, does holding down Shift Key make any difference?

From what I understand, by default all the settings are set to make the computer sleep, rather than doing a real shutdown, for speed. Supposedly if you hold down Shift when choosing shutdown, it will really shutdown as it does on older Windows versions.

If I press the shutdown button, windows 7 shuts down. Great, fine... only not really.

If I accidently press the button, it shuts down.

Can I make it ASK if I really want to shut down? That was something I liked about XP. You got to confirm that you meant to press that button if you pressed it. I pressed it and the windows 7 one several times. Very annoyign on the windows 7 end. Can't seem to stop the shutdown process once you press it.

A:Can I Make The Shutdown Button ASK to shut down?

How would you accidentally press the button if you have to open start menu, then move your mouse at the bottom right corner.
