I have a folder named Addresses and Tel Numbers in Windows Explorer/Word on Windows 7. Trying to access it I found it has been renamed $Recycle Bin. When I open it it says it is empty but when I tried to delete it it began deleting my addresses. It appears to have added the address folder to the Recycle Bin as there are a lot of other files in there that are not addresses. Can you advise how to get my Address File back - but more importantly how this has occurred. I can find the addresses elsewhere but do not understand how this has happened.

Thanks for any advice.

Preferred Solution: File renamed $Recycle Bin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Odd problem cropped up about a week ago. My boyfriend pointed out that the recycle bin has been renamed to "games (1)". I can't just rename it back either so I've no idea how to fix this. I did try going to the customize desktop feature from display>properties and selecting the restore default option but nothing happens so I'm not sure what else to try.

How do I change the File back to .CBR ??

In any folder click tools, folder options, and on the view tab uncheck the 'hide file extensions for known types' box. This will show complete file name. Now rename in the usual way and go back and re-check that box when you're done.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit. I have some avi files with messy names, so I renamed them to something more manageable. No problem, when I play them in windows media player it shows the new name in the list pane (on the right). The problem happens when I move the files (before renaming) to a shared folder for streaming to my ps3/xbox 360. Once they have been put in that folder it's like there is some sort of memory on the original file name. I can rename the file to whatever I want, and that name stays, but then when I play it in windows media player or on the ps3/xbox 360 it shows the original (messy) file name. The only solution I have been able to find is to rename the files first, and then drop them into my shared folder. Once they are in the shared folder it is the point of no return and the name they have is the name they keep. I have tried "abcAVI Tag Editor" and that is showing the file name as the title name. So the original file name doesn't appear to be trapped in the tag. I tried moving the files out of the shared folder then renaming.. it worked until I put them back in the shared folder, then it's back to the original name. Do I just need to refresh the shared folder somehow? Any help would be great. Please and thank you.

Recently, I been getting an unusual number of Win7 messages that a folder/file, etc can't be renamed/moved/whatever because something is using it. Sometimes the cause is obviously my "fault". Other times I can't determine what's holding things up. Sometimes the only thing in the taskbar is the folder containing whatever folder/file I'm working on. Sometimes closing & reopening the folder is all that's needed. Other times I've had to restart. This has just started happening so frequently.

Is there an easy/quick way to identify what is using it? Or to force release?

A:Sometimes a folder/file can't be renamed or moved

Try Unlocker

When you get the error right click on the file or folder and click Unlocker. It should tell you what is holding onto the item. Also you can select delete on next boot etc..

I recommend the portable version since it is not supposed to install unwanted software.

Hi, I have a problem where all of my File filetypes have been renamed to NetoCoupon filetype. I had removed the NetoCoupon malware many many months ago and my computer is completely clean except for this one problem. All scans with malwarebytes and Hitman Pro come up clean and as far as i can tell, the renaming of the filetype has had no effect on my computer.
Here is an example of what i am talking about.

This is what its supposed to look like (This is a screenshot from my friends computer)

some more examples.

This does not seem to be harmful but i want to fix the problem because it gives me flashbacks to when my computer was infected.
I am running windows 10

A:FILE filetype was renamed to NetoCoupon

See if the programs below will clean up those files.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

Hey! I have a virus. I had what I thought was a screenshot from skype through a friend. It was a .scr instead though. I was suspiscious of clicking it in the first place because we hardly ever talk on skype. But, for some reason I did the really dumb thing and clicked it. Pretty instantly I knew it was a virus since it loaded but didn't open anything. I close the programs I have open and then receive a text from coinbase. I never use coinebase. I made an account there a while back but never did anything with it. I was basically just curious what it was about and then left it alone.
This kind of freaked me out and I wondered what other information it could have. So I called my bank to cancel my card and send me a new one just to be safe. I restart the computer into safemode and then search online quick way to get rid of it. I went to reddit and found the techsupport subreddit. I read their malware removal guide and I followed it twice, minus the roguekiller step. I thought it worked and got rid of the virus. Here I decided I want to be safer so I install bitdefender and get rid of avast. Avast gave me some trouble but I was able to work it out and got rid of it.
After all the scans and removing I find I'm unable to run Dungeon Fighter Online. Whenever I try to launch it it makes the CPU run at 100%. So I ended the process. and restarted my computer after another scan and did a sfc /scannow and it found some stuff and fixed it. I restarted and let it b... Read more

As far as I could tell, nothing was wrong with this computer. I'm having problems with my other computer (have run every program except ComboFix on it and so far it looks good again) and for giggles I ran AVG Antirootkit Free on this "uninfected" computer.

It found a hidden driver file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\ay5s0cg8.sys.

I selected it to be removed and rebooted. I ran AVG ARK again and it again found another hidden driver file. This time named something completely different. It removed it and rebooted. I ran it again and another file popped up, named something else (is this the polymorphic I hear about?)

So I ran all the major AV software (CureIt, Kaspersky, Bitdefender) and finally found Win32.Virut.ce. But it was found in a Restore point directory...nothing active.

My computer runs XP Pro SP3, with 4 drives (1 OS / 3 RAID0).

I have current logs from RSIT, GMER, DRWeb, SDFix if you want me to post them.

Thank you!

A:AVG Antirootkit keeps finding renamed .sys file after every reboot

After doing many, many searches and reading I ran across this regarding my randomly named hidden driver:I'm working in company that develops the OSAM.If you have an sptd.sys driver (driver of CD/DVD emulator; installed with Alcohol 120%, Daemon Tools and some others), then your randomly named hidden driver ("aa9ak670.sys") is not a malicious and it is not a rootkit (just using rootkit technologies) -- it's a part of sptd.sys. This behavior (hide a dropped driver and kill the body of the driver) was made by authors of SPTD to prevent CD-copy protectors, who trying to detect and doesn't allow to work a CD-emulator software.I have Alcohol120 running so I can relax a little with that knowledge. I'm still curious about this SSDT entry from Gmer, though.SSDT - spxs.sys - ZwEnumerateKey [0xB9EC6CA2]SSDT - spxs.sys - ZwEnumerateValueKey [0XB9EC7030]Each time I run Gmer, the "spxs.sys" is a different file name. (ie, spis.sys, spys.sys, spie.sys, etc...) Does anyone know if this is also related to Alcohol120? I disabled the virtual drives but still get the rootkit activity and the randomly named sp**.sys file.

My Dad's 20 GB USB 2 external HD was mysteriously renamed from Chinese to English and the new name is Lost Plannet 2 which looks like a game. He manually renamed it back, but it reverted back after rebooting.

Any idea how this could hav ehappened and how can we change it back permanently?

A:external HD got renamed and cannot be renamed back

It's just a thought, but try viewing hidden & system files to see if there's anything fishy about the drive. Don't panic when you see stuff that you didn't know was there, but if you do see any system files on the root of the drive let us know what they are. Especially if you happen to find a file called "autorun".

Problem: A while ago I emptied the recycle bin. After emptying, a folder remained that had 4-5 files in it. I don't recall exactly what the files were.

I tried to delete the folder, and got the message in the title.

No problem I thought, and I got out a handy file shredder and shredded that file to pieces. It was gone.

Except it's not. When I use CCleaner or other aps to clean my system, the "cannot delete file:..." message in the title pops up.

If I go to the recycle bin and empty it, I get the message. When I look in the recycle bin, it is empty, but if I tell it to empty itself I get the message.

So the folder is in the recycle bin, invisible. It was "shredded", but still remains.

I have entered safe mode, but is still get the message when I try to empty the recycle bin or use CCleaner.

I have read things that reference deleting the entire recycle bin (which then recreates itself), but am not clear on this or if it is a good idea.

My system runs fine, it's just an annoyance.

Any ideas from the experts here (you solved a big virus issue I had a while ago, and this is nothing in comparision, but hopefully somebody has seen this issue before...)

When I delete a file into the recycle bin, what happens exactly? Is a copy of the file made, or is it just merely moved?

A:What happens when I put a file into the recycle bin?

Hello Maxtot2,

Files that you choose to delete from your hard drive are first sent to the Recycle Bin (unless you hold shift while choosing delete, which skips the Bin entirely, use this with caution). Once you've accumulated a few files and folders in the Recycle Bin you may want to free up some space. Browsing to the Recycle Bin and giving it a right click will give you the option to empty the Recycle Bin. This removes the files and it is marked as free space on the hard drive. Using specialized recovery software you can still restore a file even at this point.

While using windows photo gallery I told my machine to delete a new folder that I had created, then emptied out. I got the confirm deletion popup and sent the "new file" to the recycle bin. It sent the entire pictures file, not just the single folder within the file. Now the Picture file will not restore no matter what I do. I have hit restore from the drop down menu, restore from the right click menu and tried dragging the picture file to the desktop, and to the menu on the left handside. I can't open the picture file while its in the recycle bin to retrieve the pictures within it. Any ideas would be lovely as it contains ALL my photos and it would totally suck to lose them all.

Much thanks.

A:Cant restore file from recycle bin

If you made a restore point while you had the pictures file there's a chance you may be able to pull it out of the restore point files using this free utility:

It's worth a shot. If it doesn't work in this case it's still handy to have. It's easy to use. Select the date from the drop down most likely to have the file. Navigate to the folder that had it. See if it's there. If so just right click it and select Export. Choose to folder to copy into.

See if you can "move" them from the recycle bin and delete on boot using something like Unlocker.

To move the file, highlight it, go up to the Edit in the toolbar. You should see the option to move it to another folder. After installing Unlocker, you will have a shortcut in right click to bring it up for files you want to get rid of.

I'm using Windows XP - the other day I scanned a film negative into Adobe Photoshop, tweaked it then saved it. Yesterday I was tidying up and binned the file because I no longer needed it. Then, doing routine PC 'maintenance' I went to empty my Recycle Bin and couldn't remove this particular file. I get the message: "Cannot delete Dc4: It is being used by another program or person. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The filename is actually Scans2. I know of no programs running that might be using this scan. I read some other help sites, downloaded a utility called Mboot but couldn't select the file to drag and drop into Mboot's space. I can't rename it, move it, restore it or delete it ! I give up - I know this isn't a major problem but I worry about viruses and the like - I have Norton Firewall and anti-virus etc. all up to date.

Cheers, Karen

Hi. I have been going back and forth on the Windows XP forum looking for help to a troubling problem. It seems that I have a file or folder that is invisible in my Recycle Bin. I first noticed it about 3 or 4 days now, and I have tried everything to determine what this file is, as I do not want to delete an unknown entity that may crash my system. I have no idea how this got in my recycle bin. But, I do know for a fact that there is something in the bin. Everytime I try and delete items from my bin, there is always a mysterious added file to the deletion. For instance, if I place 2 files in the bin for deletion, when I go to remove all items in the bin, the question is asked, Are you sure you want to delete all three items in the bin? Despite the fact that there are only 2 files in the bin. Here is a link to a more detailed background from the XP forum. The moderator phawgg suggested a Hijack this posting, since we were unable to resolve the problem. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...=0&#entry230103Here is my Hijackthis log, followed by a WinPFind log. A:File Recovery From Emptied Recycle Bin

A lot will depend on how much you have used the pc since deleting the files and wether they have bee noverwritten or not . . you can try GetDataBack . . it will let you use the trial version to see if it can recover the files, then pay to get them

How to recover?  Have tried a couple of the "free" softwares out there to no avail.
- easeUS
- Wondershare
- Active File Recovery
Deleted a Word doc from a folder, then deleted it from the recycle bin.  Windows 7 on a work-issue Dell Latitude E6440.  Any help is appreciated.

A:Permanently deleted file from recycle bin

Your chance of success depends very much on the amount of "use" the pc has had since deleting the file from the recycle bin.

I have been lumbered with a *.mov file that I thought I had deleted but it remains in the Recycle Bin and defies all attempts to delete it. The message I get is "Cant delete Dc6 - it is being used by another person or program. Close any prpgrams that might be using the file and try again."

I have rebooted and still have no success in ridding myself of this file. The didk clean up tool doesn't work either.

How do I rid myself of this turbulent file - (with apologies to Henry II)

A:Solved: Cant delete file from Recycle Bin

Try a clean up utility such as ATF Cleaner; www.atribune.org

Try booting to safe mode, by tapping the F8 key once a second.
At the Windows startup menu, use the up / down arrows to highlight / select safe mode
log in
Acknowledge that the PC is running in safe mode.

Try ATF Cleaner in safe mode.

Do you have a recycle bin protecting file such as Norton System works?

I have used Killbox to remove stubborn files.
Remove the .mov from the recycle bin.
Then, run Killbox.

I was wondering if anyone knows the file path ( if there is one) that would let you open the recycle bin via task manager (new task run....) under win2k pro?

I just had a call from a friend who, after installing google tool bar (by "mistake" )
then used the search function and removed all of the files by hand

The end result was that the pc hung, and when she restarted explorer.exe does not start,
(therefore no desktop, start menu etc) task manager does however function and i have managed to get her to open programs that way

As she deleted the files to the recycle bin i was wondering if there is a way to restore them by opening the recycle bin threw task manager? if there is then presumably i would need to give her the file path, and was wondering :-
A/ if it is possible to do this &
B/ (if it is) if any kind person knows the file path to the recycle bin .exe ?

I realize that this might not be possible and it might seem a lot more involved than simply poping in the win2k CD and doing a repair on the OS, but having done this with her before i know it will mean spelling out every action.

Had a huge problem a few weeks ago with a Blackberry Desktop Manager that wouldn't completely install properly or uninstall to allow me to begin again.
With suggestions from many forum sources, and using several utility programs (Revo Uninstaller, Emco MoveOnBoot, Unlocker, etc) I finally managed to get the program to uninstall. Reinstalled a newer version. Thought my problem was solved.

A few days later, while running a routine tempfile/MRUfile/History/cookie removal (using Windows Cleanup 5.1) It popped up a warning message "Cannot remove folder Dd16: Access denied". I've been unable to successfully delete this directory for a week or better. To begin with, I couldn't find the referenced directory or files by name using any type of search.
I finally located it in my Recycle Bin as orphan files in a pair of folders left over from the Blackberry Desktop Manager (Turns out there is a Dd15 as well that I never saw since the Cleanup never got past the Dd16).

I have tried multiple times, from Safe Mode and normal bootup, to delete these folders/files using all the above referenced utilities as well. Unlocker says that it does it successfully, but when I return to the Recycle Bin, the folders have simply changed their names to Dd17 and Dd18, then to Dd19 & Dd20, ad infinitum.

Nothing seems to be capable of getting rid of these files/folders. They were originally part of "EventLog" & "TraceLog" folders in the BB Desktop Manage... Read more

Hello all!

I am new here and I have a monumental problem...I'm in huge hot water. I accidentally deleted 2 very important files last night from the Recycle Bin.

Somebody in another forum suggested I try one of those data recovery programs...I tried all three. The problem is that they don't know how to find a Gedcom file/.ged. I'm also trying to find the file I deleted from software called "Family Tree Legends" file extension .FTL.

I am on bended knee begging for help...Bueller? Bueller? If I can't recover these files, I'm going to have a meltdown.

I have found that some files on an external HD will not transfer across when I try to move them to my laptop I get an error about that particular file. As it turns out I don't actually need this file anymore so I tried to delete it however when ever I try to click on the file it doesn't respond and I need task manager or if I try to delete it it just says preparing to recycle and will not do anything it just stays like this for ages until I hit cancel.... Any ideas?

A:Can not delete file just says preparing to recycle

You could try using one of these free utilities to see if it will delete the file for you.

Malwarebytes : Remove any locked file with FileASSASSIN

As to why some files won't delete, it's hard to say. Your user account could be damaged or corrupt. You could create a new user account and see if that will let you delete the file.

User Account - Create

Does the file have a lock icon? Have you used any kind of encryption software? If you right-click on the file does a context menu open up with a "Share with" option? As I said, there are many possibilities why you can't delete it.

Not sure if I have this under the correct forum. I'm looking for a utility I can use to permanently erase files from recycle bin without wiping the hard drive. Can you all suggest a reliable, safe tool you like to use for this? I use Windows 7.

A:What do you use to permanenty erase file from recycle bin?

You can try either of these   Darik’s Boot and Nuke , CCleaner , Eraser.
I prefer CCleaner and using Wipe Free Disk Space - Function.
1/ From the main CCleaner window, click on the "Tools" icon to the left.
2/ Select "Drive Wiper" from the list that appears in the new pane.
3/ In this pane, select "Free Space Only" from the first drop-down box, then select the number of overwrite passes on the free space.
4/Select the drive with free space you want to clean and click Wipe.
The number of passes you have CCleaner make is up to you. One pass will likely be sufficient, but if you're really serious about security and privacy then you'll probably like to do more passes. The time this process will take to complete is based on the number of passes you choose to make as well as the size of your hard drive.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit, and yesterday, when I started my PC up, I was presented with a scaled down version of my desktop. Upon further investigation, I found out that I was at c:\Users\TEMP\desktop. I attempted to put some files back on the desktop, and ran into other issues, so I did a Ctrl-Z to undo what I did. These files ended up in the recycle bin, with the c:\Users\TEMP\desktop label, and any attempts to retrieve them result in an error message stating that this does not exist.

I have gotten back to my original desktop, which is at c:\Users\Me\desktop by searching other internet sites about this disappearing desktop profile issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to retrieve the "lost" files?

Thank you.

hey guys,
im new to this fourm and not sure if this topic has already been posted, too lazy to check...

ive had a file folder stuck in my recycle bin for a couple of weeks now. the folder contained some audio files. if i try to empty the recycle bin, it goes through the normal processes i.e. "are you sure..." when i click yes it makes the sound that it usually makes of crumbling paper but the icon is still full and the folder is still there. also if there is anything else in the bin and i try to empty it it will do the same thing as i just described but everything stays in the bin. therefore i have to go through and permanently delete every thing individually. ive tried permanentlydeleteing the particular folder in question and it is not working.

any advice would be much appreciated

thanks a lot
