Yoga 730 external display issue

Q: Yoga 730 external display issue

I'm using a USB-C to HDMI adapter (using the DisplayPort over USB standard, not an older DisplayLink type) to use an external display on the Yoga 730 and it has issues when running as 2 separate displays (everything works fine when mirroring or using only the external display). If you set the graphics settings to "extend these displays" the Windows 10 shell seems to wedge itself (can interact with already running apps, but cannot start new apps or use the taskbar/start menu) and the bottom of each display flickers (looks like a flickering ghost taskbar). I don't suspect a hardware issue with the adapter because it works perfectly in mirroring or single-display mode; instead I suspect a graphics driver bug. Others that use this adapter on other PCs have no problems. I'd love to try a newer version of the Intel 620 graphics driver but it won't install (it says it's incompatible with this system and to contact the computer manufacturer)... Lenovo's customized version of the driver is 4 months old. I have all the latest drivers installed via Lenovo Vantage, Intel's web interface (it only installed newer Wifi and Bluetooth drivers), and Windows Update. The laptop is running Windows 10 1803 17134.112 (2018 Creator's update).

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I connect to a Dell U3415W monitor and use extend display. The display quality on the laptop is outstanding but when I connect to the montior it isn't very sharp. I'm running monitor resolution on 3440x1440, and using HDMI cable. I had no issue when using the X1 carbon.I've updated display drivers. Any ideas? thanks

Has anyone else seen this problem? I have external VGA display 1920x1080, in Win10 it is set as primary display. Both Intel and Radeon video adapters are enabled. Most of Win10 "modern" aka "metro" apps (Mail, Store) fail to render correctly when their window is bigger than the built-in LCD (1366x768).At least it looks like this. When I resize these apps more than certain size, the added area does not render and stays transparent or filled by background color.Moving the window around, further resize does not help. This behaviour started in version 1708 and still continues after 1803 update.   Please advice how to fix this. Very annoying. Thanks,Pavel A.

I just bought a Yoga 720, 13.3 inch from Amazon (USA) - i5, 256 gb SSD, 8 gb RAM.  Its a nice laptop but upon turning it on, the fan noise scared me completely. To add more to the woes, screen couldnt display white color properly. It would show an off white color/yellowish tint - I thought this is a defective one until i read it online that many are facing this issue. Hi guys, I'm new to the forums, but I've had my Yoga 900 for about a year now. Love it! I recently acquired a Dell 4k monitor and I want to use it as an external display for my 900. I have a USB-c to Displayport adapter. However, I'm a bit nieve on the CPU & GPU requirements for 4k. So, will the 900 do the job? Will it work via the USB-c out to Displayport?  Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Also, down the road a bit I'm going to be looking to purchase a tower to run this display. I'm a big fan of Lenovo's products, so any advice on which Lenovo tower I should be looking at would be appreciated. I don't need anything too awesome. Just a basic tower that can handle everyday family computing @ 4k/60.

Hey guys, I recently purchased a micro hdmi to hdmi cable for an external display monitor with my Yoga 3 Pro however after connecting the laptop to the external display, I receive a 'No Signal' message on the external display. When the cable is not plugged into the external display, it says 'Check Signal Cable' therefore I know the external display can recognize when it is plugged into the laptop. I have read other forums regarding cutting back the plastic on the micro hdmi cable for further extension of the male end into the micro hdmi port however continue to experience 'No Signal' messages. Also in my display settings the laptop will not detect another monitor and graphics properties states there is only the single laptop display. Any suggestions will help, thanks!

Hello everyone I'm a new owner of the Yoga 720 15''. I've just bought apple thundebrolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter and tried to connect external display using miniDP -> DP cable but with no luck. The same DP cable and monitor works ok on my MacBook (early 2015 with thunderbolt 2 ports). Computer sees the adapter (it's visible in the "printers and other devices" panel) but nothing is shown on my external display (it behaves like there is no cable connected to it and goes to sleep after few minutes). I've seen on various online stores that the apple adapter should work with my laptop. Is there something that I'm missing or maybe my T3 -> T2 adapter is broken? Thanks! Marcin

Hi,  Can someone from Lenovo officially confirm or someone who has bought this laptop test this and confirm, can the new Yoga 900 output 4k resolution @ 60hz to an external monitor, such as Dell P2715Q?  What I see in the specs, it has Intel HD 520, and the spec sheet says DisplayPort 1.2 via USB-C can drive4096x2304 @60Hz However, there's no confirmation anywhere of this, neither from Lenovo, nor from users. Most USB-C to DP cable makers haven't tested this yet.  I'm seriously considering the new Yoga 900 as a replacement for my T410. Main use is business and photo editing, and looks like an awesome laptop. The ability to hook up 1 external monitor at 4k @60hz is critical for me, otherwise, it's a Dell XPS 13. Thanks in advance,Vele

[email protected], hopefully someone can help.  I got a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 13 80HE004LGE for half a year.  Intel Core M-5Y70 1.1 GHz + Intel HD Graphics 5300, Kerntakt: 100-850 MHz, Dual-Channel, 20.19.15.4444 I used it with an external DELL 24" screen in extension setup WUXGA 1920 x 1200 pixel. Worked without any problem. Now changed the screen: DELL 27" (Dell U2713HM) . This screen should be able to provide WQHD 2560 x 1440 pixel but max I can choose in the set up (Win 10) is Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel. I did the full program; 1. deleting drivers (Graphic and Monitor) reinstalled newest versions provided from Lenovo/Dell website,2. tried 3 different cables (HDMI and DVI), no differences :-(3. Installed Dell SetUp tool4. Installed intel set up tool (Could enter the high resolution manually here as personal setting, but does not work either) Nothing helped :-( screent stays on 1920 x 1080 :-( This 27" screen was running connected to a MacBook Pro without any problem in max. resolution 2560 x 1440 before.  Due to my research the Intel HD 5300 should be able to handle 2560 x 1440. Looking forward to helpful repliesDennis

I am using a usb-c to hdmi adapter to output to a TV but the black levels look washed out. I had no issues with the same TV and a previous laptop that had a dedicated hdmi port. In the intel graphics settings usually there is a "quantization range" setting to change color space between RGB Limited and RGB Full if the intel graphics is driving the hdmi port. However, in this case, there is no hdmi port but instead a usb-c to hdmi adapter, thus the quantization range setting is missing. I've had the same issue before on a previous laptop with usb-c. I've tried installing thel atest drivers, including the non-validated ones from the intel website, but none give me the quantization range setting.

Hi Maihu,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Specially if the same black line appears even in the BIOS, you can initially contact Best Buy for options on return with the  store's return policy for a faster return/replacement. If that option is not available then call technical support for in-warranty repair option.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Hello everyone, I just receive a new X1 Yoga 3rd Gen with WQHD touchscreen display as a work device and there is something with the display that bothers me A LOT - when looking at the screen up close I can see a "net" over the whole display - diagonal lines going all directions. This is very noticeable on backgrounds in Office apps or in the browser and is very distracting. Moving the app to an external screen resolves the issue. I took a screenshot and then looked at it on a different screen and it's OK so it is a display thing. I tried to install Lenovo Vantage and make sure any optimizations and power saving options are off, disabled everything under the Intel Graphics settings, but can't get this to go away. My colleague has the same machine and it's the same on his screen, but he doesn't notice it. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Hi, I'm using my Yoga 900 on the desktop for longer periods of time. When it awakes from sleep it does not always "remember" that it was last displaying on the external monitor. Sometimes I have no picture at all, sometimes I have the picture on the internal monitor. When I switch to external only with F10, it won't do that, so the external monitor (HP 24es) won't wake up. Up to now my only solution is to plug out and back in the Type C adapter (Apple 3x multi adapter). That's definitely not what I want to do several times a day. Thanks for any hint...!

My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

Hi,I have a L380 Yoga 20M7-001BMH with ELAN trackpoint which exhibits the same behavior as described on another forum: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=126939 The trackpad works correctly regardless of scenario, the trackpoint scrolling works correctly regardless of scenario, however, the trackpoint cursor has its axis swapped when I'm using a secondary screen in portrait orientation with "second display only" mode. More specifically, the X and Y axis are interchanged, acting as if the screen orientation was landscape. I'm assuming this behavior is due to the assumption that the primary display of the laptop will always be in landscape mode, and when connecting only an external display, it's percieved as the primary. I have Windows 10 with all updates installed, as well as all updates installed through Lenovo Vantage. The issue is present both with a display connected through a Dell D6000 dock as well as displays connected through HDMI.

This is a dimming issue for me with the WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS Touch. When i first boot the PC for the day, the screen is usually about a 75% brightness. Using the brightness adjustment allows for further dimming the screen but the true 100% brightness is not acheived. I will list how I was able to restore the 100% brightness (but its not holding between all reboots).  1. Rolling back the Intel 520 driver will restore the screen to 100% brightness. But on a reboot, it is back to the 75% dim issue. 2. Updating the driver through the device manager will restore the screen to 100% brightness. But again, on a reboot it is back to the 75% dim issue. 3. Uninstalling all of the 520 Video Drivers and rebooting returns the screen to 100% brighness. 4. I installed the 520 Video drivers from the Thinkpad site and after a reboot, the screen is holding at 100% brightness. 5. I went into my system properties and disabled Windows 10 from updating device drivers for now.  I can not be sure that this is simply a driver issue with the Intel 520 Video. Yesterday, after going through the above process minus disabling the driver updates in Windows 10, I did a clean install and the system ran great (Bright) all day and reboots returned to a full 100% brightness. Then the next day at the days first boot, the dimmness issue returned. As stated, the above listed process has the briightness back at the moment, surviving reboots.  I am concerned that th... I looked around and didn't see any other posts exactly describing this issue, so sorry if others have already brought this up. I have a 720 13" that's acting very odd.  It'll sometimes go partially (showing only a 1/2 inch at the top of the screen) or completely black.  This happens mostly at the office.  When I walk it out of the office (and out of range of WiFi), it flickers a bit and starts displaying correctly.  I can turn airplane mode on, head back in the office, and it's fine.  As soon as it connects to the company WiFi again, it'll crap out on the display within a few minutes. When it's blacked out, I can still see the mouse if I move it up there, but can't see anything but streaks of dark grey distortion on the rest of the black screen.  Sometimes, the black area while very slowly drop down (1 pixel row at a time).  Other times, it stays that way indefinitely.  I've tried reinstalling the display, chipset, and power management drivers.  It happens at home and on cell phone tethering, but not nearly as often. Super odd issue.  It's 5 months old and still under warranty.  Anyone else having this issue?
