Can't open programs on vista getting message "choose which program to open with"

Q: Can't open programs on vista getting message "choose which program to open with"

I downloaded a file from a bit torrent site and installed it. The file was for autocad 2006 and i thought it was safe (at least i think that was when the problem started)Now I cannot open any programs or even get my computer to start in safe mode.Norton keeps telling me that attempts are happening and giving me an address (ip addresss and net address) and telling me the attempt was blocked. This attempt happens over and over about every 5 minutes.I downloaded hijack this and deleted some files and may have deleted some that shouldn't have been deleted.I don't know if this is a trojan, malware, or spywarewhen I get online it is through norton that i can access it bc opera, firefox, and explorer won't come up.Each time i try to open a file I get an error message asking me which program to use to open it. Also, I can open files if i do so as an administrator. Can someone tell me what this might be or what to look for?ThanksJustin I am not sure if I should put a log file here but in case it is ok to post one it is attached.have run a few cleanup programs and detected a trojan and removed it by running in safe mode and running nortonI cannot run anything from my desktop and have to open everything by running it as an administrator.I also cannot run combofix because i initialize as an administrator then I get the popup that asks me over and over which program to open it with in an endles loop.I can run new logs but need to know what to do first.EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Hi: my first post and I need help. It seems like I have a very nasty virus and I admit I feel very stupid.

I use Vista 32 bit Service Pack Two.

Basic Problem: I cannot open Word, Disc Clean up, RKILL, Malaware OR ANYTHING. That is because every time I try I keep getting a regular looking dialog box with this exact message:

In Blue Bar accross the top "Open With"
Then in grey area : "Choose the Program you want to open this file"
File iexplore.exe

Now in White area : Internet Explorer Microsoft Corporation (with the regular Microsoft logo)
Other Programs
When I hit the + These programs show up: Adobe, Media Center, itunes, Word, Notepad, Paint, Real Player

Of course none of these work. Then there is BROWS . . . IF NONE OF THESE WORK BROWSE THE WEB
AGAIN, nothing works

Steps I have taken to try to fix.

Run Internet Option to remove browsing. FAIL

Finally got the rkill--and got this message in my notepad :

Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Open With, Choose Program Problem
________________________________________

When I right click on a file, any file and from the list of options I choose "Open With", the menu then shows several programs, the last option being "Choose Program".

When I click on this "Choose Program" it always used to display ?Browse? but now does not and instead I get an error message as below:

?This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel?.

How can I remove this error message and get the "Choose Program" dialog box to display the ?Browse? options of programs to choose from again?

I am using Window XP Professional, Version2002, Service Pack 3.

A:Open with choose program error message

First off, Right click the file and Properties. what is the files extension? (ex) .jpg, mp4, .pdf etc. Next you must Google what program opens this extension. If you have that program already installed, then in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types scroll down to the extension (ex) .jpeg or whatever, and select the program that opens it (ex) Windows Picture and FAX viewer or whatever.

I had been using my Dell Inspiron 531 in Safe Mode with Networking for a while, after applying Roxio Easy Media Center 9. I didn't worry when my CA antivirus subscription ran out because I figured Safe Mode would give adequate protection. I ran a system restore recently. Then I installed Norton Internet Security 2009 right away, and ran full system scan several times, which found and fixed more than 200 security risks (oops!). Now I can run the machine outside of Safe Mode which is great, except for a new issue -- whenever I try to open virtually any .exe, I get blocked by the message:

"Choose the program you want to use to open this file."

I suspect some malware messed with the registry during the restore. I tried to run system restore again, but that too gets blocked by the new problem.

In researching the problem, I found some related hits for XP, but none that seemed to be specifically for Vista.

Any suggestions?

whenever i right click on a file and go to 'open with' and click on 'choose default program', i get get the following error below:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

now i am an experienced user and i am in the IT field but for the life of me i cant figure this one out. the following are some examples of file types, avi, jpeg, mpeg, txt, etc...
these files do indeed open fine with the program i have set as the default program for these files. they are also properly associated in the default programs option in vista. I sometimes for one reason or another want to open a file with a different program which is why i go to 'open with' but i dont want to have to continue to keep changing my default programs to open files.
now i have gone in the registry and manually added some of the programs to the open with context menu for some of the file extensions but i dont want to do this for all of them.
i suspect that there is some corrupt/missing dll file or reg key some where but i have yet to track it down.
everything else runs fine. vista runs great except for this 1 problem. if anyone knows a fix or even the location of the dll/reg key/file that may be corrupt then i would greatly appreciate it.
i do have backups that i can use to restore the corrupt/missing files if needed.

Hello can you post the section showing the found infections? Run MBAM... Note when you save the file save it as .com not .exe .. if you still have trouble see the Chameleon option below. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Important!! When you save the mbam-setup file, rename it to something random (such as 123abc.exe) before beginning the download.Malwarebytes may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on the renamed file to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue. If you cannot update Malwarebytes or use the Internet to download any files to the infected computer, manually update the database by following the instructions in FAQ Section A: 4. I am answering a previous thread that has been closed. For Windows XP users. If you try to open your c drive and it gives you the dialog box asking what program to open it with, and it does the same when you right click the drive and click on explorer, it is a problem with file association. None of the fixes stated in the previous thread worked but I have found a easy solution for anyone that needs the fix.

go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
there will be a link called "Drive Association Fix (Restores default settings for hard drives)"
download this file and save it onto your hard drive (it will be a zip file)
extract the zip file and double click on the file extracted.
it will ask you to confirm the selection, click yes and your problem will be fixed.
It is a regristry file that only restores the defaults for Windows XP. If you have a different OS then you need to look for the same thing that will restore the defaults for whatever OS you have.

Likewise, the Quicktime, MS Silverlight, and Adobe Flashplayer plug-ins won't operate correctly during certain instances -- the first 2 more so.

I've never come across such an issue, but first thought it was the result of faulty updates of out the many updates this thing goes through. But now, I'm convinced that is not the case.

Any and all assistance would be much appreciated.

Hello,

Everytime I restart my laptop, I get this pop up "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" for a file that has no extension, or at least the extension of the file isn't shown. I tried opening the file with notepad and get some sort of list with the title "Interface List".

I checked my startup folder and it was empty.
This problem only started a few days ago, and I can't recall doing anything different other than installing Symantec Endpoint Protection and running a full scan.

Any suggestions? I can upload print screens if necessary.

Hi, I'm a newbie to this site and am hoping someone out there, who is a lot better with computers than me, will be able to help. I am having a very similar problem to the one discussed here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/913209-solved-choose-program-you-want.html

Norton removed a virus and now I seem to be having problems opening files etc.

I having a very similar problem right down to the scroll function on the touchpad not working. When I try to open programs from my desktop or from the start menu I get the following message:

Choose the program you want to use to open this file.

When I try to open Microsoft Office programs I get the following:

C:/program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\ Office12\EXCEL.EXE

Application not found.

OR

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel

I can open both Internet Explorer and Windows Live Mail, but they seem to be the only 2 at present.

I have tried your suggested fix - downloading the .exe fix and merging it with the registry. I get the following message:

The keys and values contained in C:\Users\Claire\Desktop\exefix_cu.reg have been successfully added to the registry.

But no change to my problems.

Hope I have given you enough info. I'm not that great at computer jargon so please be patient with me and let me know if you need any more info. Any suggestions and help gratefully received

Thanks

I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

A:Choose the program you want to use to open this file

what was the "virus scanner" you used as you have to be careful about ones that pop up whilst on the internet, as the results are fake and will actually install more viruses on when you click download this to remove the viruses, but with your issue you most likely need to re-install windows or get a good quality virus scanner like norton or kaspersky to thoroughly search your computer to remove all the viruses and try to recover the data you may have lost

hope this helps

Hi,

Last night when I double clicked on my C Drive it asked me to "Choose a program to open with the following file: C:\"! First time seen this here. It was the same for the D Drive as well. I tried googling for this problem and found that few people were also complaining about it, and blaming it on viruses/corrupt system.

Anyway, I scanned with my Anti-Virus, Avast Home Edition on boot and found few viruses and deleted:

C:\Windows\System32\SocksA.exe infected by Win 32:VB-BBA [Trj]
C:\Windows\System32\abgsvc.exe with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}

C:\Program file\VideoAddon\ctmdl.dll with Win32:Trojan-gen {other}

I also scanned with Bit Defender and Kaspersky Online Scanners. Kaspersky Online said 'Object is locked... skipped'. I don't know what that means but I uninstalled Avast and downloaded and installed Kaspersky trial version. I Scanned with it and it detected and deleted:

After restarting I am now unable to open .exe files such as firefox, malwarebytes, etc., and instead I am prompted to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." If I right click and "Run as Administrator" the file will load properly.

Attached are DDS logs and GMER logs.

Thank you,
Eric

This is happening on Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3.I get the error "Choose the program you want to open this file" when trying to open Firefox. It happens for every other EXE (like calc) as well, but only in Normal Mode. When I'm in Safe Mode, everything works fine. It's weird because I cancel the error and it actually pulls up an Untitled webpage in Firefox and lets me browse. Many sites have mentioned an EXE reg fix which I have merged with my registry in Safe Mode and it has no affect on being able to open EXEs in Normal Mode.Other steps I have taken include a full Spybot S&D scan/removal, a thorough HijackThis scan/removal, GMER scan/removal, ComboFix scan/removal, MalwareBytes Antimalware scan/removal, and ESET's free online virus scanner.I have performed all these diagnostic steps in Safe Mode with Networking.I even went into Set Program Access & Defaults to ensure that Firefox was selected as my default browser.Any other ideas to get rid of this error besides the steps I took above?

A:Choose the program you want to open this file

Did you try a different browser, in case it'a Firefox issue?

Did you try uninstalling/reinstalling Firefox?

Are you saying that you cannot run any .exe file in normal mode...but they all work in safe mode?

I had a malware/virus yesterday, which I finally got rid of with a antivirus program, but in the process lost the ability to open programs.

When I try to open an Firefox/Internet Explorer page I get "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." When I try to run Orbit, and other programs I get the same problem. I can open the program by browsing through the computer, but it reoccurs the next time and I have to repeat the process all over again. Looking for one solution to fix this problem across the board.

I have Windows Vista Home Edition

I suspect that you still have an infection on the computer and suggest that you read the instructions at the top of the Virus and other malware removal forum, and then click on report here to request that your thread be moved to that forum.
There are only a few people there qualified to work on this type of problem, (they have a gold, green or blue shield by their name) and they are VERY BUSY so it could take some time before you receive help (could be 24 hrs +/-)
They are good and I am sure will be able to talk you thru the process to get your system up and running smoothly.
Good Luck and Happy Computing

Hi and welcome!

Try this: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the desktop. Right click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note: You need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Restart your computer.

If the fix opens as a text file then right click it and select Open With > Choose Program Then, select Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

When I click on this "Choose Program" it does not have a drop down menu anymore. It has gone missing.

Instead I get this message :: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

How do I get this "Choose Program" dialog box or drop down menu back.

Hi Gurus: I am running on Desktop, Win XP Professional, SP3 Ver:5.1.2600.5512Till yesterday this option worked fine, today only i noticed that if I Right click on any file type (e.g. MP3, DLL), Open with -> Choose Program.. Opens Notepad automatically Does not allow me to choose a program as it used to before, I am using SP3 since two weeks now, but only today, this weird selection started happening. Is it that i am hacked??? I did use nlite to generate an .iso for backup purposes, never used this .iso file. In this nlite I opted Tweaks Section -> General Tab -> Explorer -> Associate additional file types with notepad (explanation - Open LST, CFG and NFO files by default). I do not think it has any significance, but wanted to mention anything i did related to notepad association. So any help in this regard is greatly appreciated by me and my kids and my grand kids....

I would try a system restore first of all if that does not help post a reply. Try a few days before the problem then a week or two before the problem if it does not help.

I got a virus asking me to buy some kind of virus software. Of course I did not buy it. I ran norton antivirus and malware bytes right away. Norton removed a virus and malware did not find anything. After that when I went to click on Internet Explorer and microsoft word it would ask me to pick a program to use to open this file.

I looked around on this site (tech support guy) and I found a post that said to do this......

"Go here File association fixes for Windows Vista and download the fix for EXE files.
Extract the enclosed .reg file to your desktop, then double click it to merge into the registry. "

I did that and all seems to be working fine now. My question is how do I know if the virus or spyware are totally gone off my computer.

Do I need to download a newer version of the malware bytes because mine is about 1 year old?

A:Fixing the list of Open with / choose default program JPG

Hello pritpalspall, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file for the listed jpg option in the tutorial below to restore it's default association and registry entries that should also restore the default Open with entries as well.

Afterwards, you'll need to set Windows Photo Viewer back as the default program though since the default is the modern Photos app.

Hope this helps,

Hi, it would be really great if you guys could help me.

Have I understood it correct, if I am not supposed to use GMER and obtain the "ark.txt" since I have 64-bit? So the only file to zip is the Attach.txt?

It happened about 26 hours ago, I got the Win Secuirty 2012-virus, while streaming NBA online, which denied me access to everything. As Firefox shut down, AVG told me there was two threats. That might have been stupid, but I told AVG do delete them right away. I found this solution: remove Win 7 Antivirus 2012 - uninstall instructions I used the fake activation keys, got acces to internet and bought "Spyware Doctor" as they recommended, and ran it.

At first, when doing a quick scan it found a number of low risk threats, but when I manually scanned the whole computer, it also found a Trojan.Gen, which it located as a application file called "kwu" under users/atle/appdata/local. I dont know if I can just delete this, or? It "fixed" all threats but this one, which it did not manage. I therefore went through with the steps further down on the page, and downloaded and ran: win7_av_fix.reg , removeproxy.exe and Microsoft FixIt. I then tried using Spyware Doctor again, and it still found the Trojan.Gen, but it seems it managed to "remove" the Win Security 2012, because that icon then disappeared on the toolbar.

I restarted the computer, and now I cannot open any file on the desktop, it only asks me to choose from a list ... Read more

A:Win Security 2012 / Trojan.Gen / Cannot open anything, have to choose program

Update, not a bump:

Today, I was not able to post it here in forehand, my dad set up a meeting with a friend of his who is a programmer. He took a look at it for a small charge, while I was there. He did some stuff in safe mode, and also checked the registry and downloaded Malwarebytes Antimalware, ran it and removed threats. After that we also removed the threats that I mentioned in the AppData-folder.

I just got home, and now I can run all programs and open files. He installed Microsoft Security Essentials, so I uninstalled AVG, and turned off Spyware Doctors intelliguard. I have uninstalled Antimalware aswell. Computer seems pretty fine, however just a minute ago Security Essentials reported two threats, trojans, that I asked it to remove which it managed. The computer is also feeling slightly like it is working with something, even though I have not given it any tasks. Shall I consider it fixed? In that case, consider this solved. I have Windows XP, the computer is a HP.
So I usually use the USB everyday but all of a sudden it won't open when I double click it in My Computer. The only way to open it is to Right Click, and select Open As Portable Media Device.
After I open it that way, I select my Drive, and then I find my files. But, I can't open my files. If I double click it, it just opens up the properties of the file. If I right click, it only gives me the option to Copy, Delete, Rename, and Properties.

How do I fix this problem?

Whenever I try to open a program I'm given the "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" message. I read somewhere that I can fix this issue through running cmd but when I try that I'm told the application (C:\\Windows\system32\cmd.exe) is not found.

Hi Mmage

The issues your having can be resolved with the following.
This commonly happens after a fraudulent security tool is removed from a computer.
You will have to apply the following to the Registry, just download the file depending on your operating system (The Vista one will work on Windows 7) and then double click it to merge it to the registry, this should resolve the issue.
