Unable to connect to the internet, only to the network

Q: Unable to connect to the internet, only to the network

Hi everybody,
My windows 7 connection has always been able to conenct to the internet through any type of connection wifi or with wire.
But this time - i am in another country, Colombia - and the computer can only get connected to the network but i don't have the rest of the connection: no internet at all.
Even if I directly connect the ethernet cable to my computer it doesn't work...
Any idea to resolve that ?

Cheers everybody !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi tessiermaurice welcome to the forums.

Couple of questions to help us troubleshoot:
1. Are there any other machines on the network? If so do they have an Internet connection?
2. Is it on ALL networks, or one network in particular?
3. If on one network in particular, how is the network set up? is it a router or a modem?
4. Please open command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" and post the results back.

Also, please fill out your System Specs it will help us enormously, both now and for future problems.
Thanks

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help. We recently installed a new wireless router, and all the other computers in our house can access the internet. But for some reason I can only connect to the network, even though it says there's full connectivity.

I called the customer careline for our internet providers, and they said it was a problem with my computer settings, rather than the router. But they said they couldn't advise me any further unless I paid for it, hence my need to look for advice elsewhere....

Thanks!

I have a computer, obviously not this one-that can not connect to the local network, and from this can not connect to the internet.

It's on windows xp sp2

recently had to allow MAC authentication to prevent certain neighbors from stealing our internet.

In the device manager nothing has a ! ? or flagged red.

but in the network folder it says that all the network connections are disabled, I've tried to figure out how to enable them but to no avail.

The computer is using a linksys wireless-b usb network adapter, and previously has worked.

what can I do to solve this problem.
sorry if you guys get this sort of question a thousand times per day.

I just had to format my hardrive and reinstall Windows XP.

Now I am trying to connect to the internet via my already establisched Cable -> Router -> PC network but no matter what I try the 'Wizard' doesn't seem to do what I need.

I obviously have a connection at the cable modem and router since I was able to use the other PC in my house to post this.

The PC I just formatted IS connected exactly the same way it was before I reinstalled XP (with a hard line directly to the router).

I am frustrated that this is so non-intuitive.

Can someone PLEASE walk me through getting the PC to be able to connect to the internet again.

I just got a new laptop about 2 months ago and it worked fine until 3 weeks ago. I am unable to get on the internet anymore, the other computer connected to this router can get on it. When I run the Windows Network Diagnostics it says that it cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server, and to reset the Network Adapter "Wireless Network Connection". I do this but it always comes up saying there is a problem that they couldnt fix.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this? I would appreciate it! Thanks!

Hello willmon2000,

Wow, that is the tiniest screen shot ever! Have you tried hard coding your IP settings to see if its just a DHCP issue (IP, SN, GW, DNS)? Give that a shot; find an unused IP and use that on the machine thats having a difficult time connecting and report back.

If you're not sure how to do that, visit: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/

My PC has not been able to connect to our Internet (2Wire) for about a month now. All other computers connecting to it are working fine. In the past I have been able to connect very simply without any problems. Then one day I restarted the computer and haven't been able to connect since.

It does recognize that it is connected to a network when I check the Local area Connection Status. One thing that has been acting strange is the Windows Firewall. Every time I try to open it up it gives me this message:

"Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?"

Everytime I click "YES" it says it cannot start the service.

Also, I've tried using a network setup CD that i created from a working computer and once i restarted the comp it gave me a message saying:

"C:\DOCUME~1\DAVID&~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\WinXPChk.exe could not be found"

I would appreciate any help I can get.

go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc right click the devmgmt.msc icon in the Search Results and Run As Administrator. In the Device Manager do you see any devices with yellow marks? If so, these devices need to have drivers installed. If you have a name brand computer (Dell, HP etc) go to the manufacturers Support/Download Drivers site and type in your service tag # or your make and model # and download the Network Adapter for your specific computer. And any other drivers you need.

I have lost the ability to connect to the internet with my desktop (Dell XPS 420). I have a Netgear WNDA USB adapter but it cannot find any networks. It is not the router because I have a laptop, iphone and tablet that can all connect. At first I could see the network but it was "bumped" by this Virtual Network and then it would not be able to connect. I found online an article describing the same problem so I followed their recommendations. I removed the Netgear software and reinstalled it from the CD but now it will not even bring up the control module to connect/find the networks. What's even stranger is that the computer will not connect with an ethernet cable either. Help!

Hi

It worked like a charm on the first day....and then the disappointment...((

I have been trying to get it working ever since, but with no success at all...after setting the dynamic IPs in the first round, I have now assigned static IPs to the adhoc connection on the PC as well as the Mobile.. the settings on the mobile that I have set now are as follows

static IP address- 192.168.7.101
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
gateway address- 192.168.0.1
DNS- of the ISP
proxy address and port - 0.0.0.0;0

Now the 2 devices are able to ping to each other but while trying to connect to the internet on my mobile, the message that I get is "DNS Failed".

Hello! I have a problem. It is a period of time, of some weeks, since my laptop is unable to access the internet. Also, I don't have Internet access. In the task bar, my wireless icon has an exclamation mark, in a yellow triangle. I have tried to connect with another laptop at a wireless network my laptop can't connect and it worked for the other laptop. So, the problem is with my laptop, not with the network. Hi
I have a dell laptop wireless router and cable modem. I ruled out the cable modem and wireless router being bad because I can connect to the internet through my phone and through ps3. The laptop can't connect through the router or directly plugged in from the cable modem.

The status of connectivity keeps reading "acquiring network address" and the ip address reads 0.0.0.0.0. There was a recent post about this but the post ended with no solution to the problem. I tried using a static ip amongst other things and can really use anyone expertise. My laptop was working fine until it just one day decided not to want to be able to connect.

Thank you in advance.

I have Comcast cable internet in Atlanta and use a Motorola SB6121 modem and a Linksys wireless router. The wireless network has been up and running for over a year and I have never had any problems with it and I have never made any changes to it after the initial setup. I connect to the wireless network using two smart phones and an Apple laptop. I live in an apartment so the signal strength is always high and I am never more than one room away from the wireless router.

It was working fine one night like always and then in the morning I was unable to connect to the wireless network. I can still access the internet via wired ethernet cable so I know the internet is online and it is downloading at full speed. I can access the internet via wired connection directly from the modem to the computer. I can also access the internet via wired connection from the modem to the router to the computer. Comcast shows no problems with the connection on their end.

I have purchased all new ethernet cables so I know the cables aren't the problem so I figured the wireless router might have a problem. I bought a new wireless router (Apple Airport Express) and created a new wireless network. if the router is working with a cable connection, then its unlikely to be the modem , unless thats also a router and you are using it for DHCP

you say the modem is connected by cable to the router
and any device connected to the router by cable works perfectly - is that correct

on the old router - have you removed the wireless security and see if you can connect ?

carried out a full power cycle - see below

also it would be worth making a note of the router configuration and do a factory reset on the router and re setup and try again

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can help me.
We have three computers at home two which are connected to router and working fine and my laptop.
My laptop was connecting to my home wireless network until my daughter used it last. Now it will not connect at all
I used to have to follow the steps below for some reason and then it would connect fine:
Wireless network connections
Change advanced settings
Wireless Networks tab
I would have to tick the checkbox USE WINDOWS TO CONFIGURE MY WIRELESS NETWORK SETTINGS
Then into properties for my wireless network and in association retype my password and then it would connect. (it seemed like to much work every time but it still worked)
There was other networks in the list which i deleted and wireless network connection shows that the network connection strength is excellent but it just seems to get stuck aquiring the network address. I have tried repair etc.

Can someone please help me with this as maybe it's just something simple!!

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

Hello guys,

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.

Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.

I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.

When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.

Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.

Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.

I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards, Lee.

Hi there, I'm having a bit of an issue with one of my computers. It's fairly new, running on Windows Vista.

I am able to connect to a wireless router (Belkin), but I am not able to connect to the internet on this one particular computer. Another desktop computer on the network is able to access the internet. I just get the error "Internet Explorer cannot display the page" on the laptop whenever I attempt to open IE.
I've read through quite a few similar problems on other sites, but have yielded no solution. Any suggestions?

I need real help. I had cable internet 12mbs installed last September (2010) in my one bedroom apartment. Before that, I was connecting to a spotty 1.5mbs network that was open next door (with their permission). I was able to obtain fast and efficient internet access for about 3 or 4 months and then it became intermittent. For the past 2 months I have been unable to connect through my home cable modem/router at all. I have been to the cable company and they have tested the cable modem/router and the signal which comes into the router and out at fast speeds. I have been to the place where I bought my laptop (purchased at Staples last summer). Others can connect though my wifi, but I cannot. It connects but gives me a DNS error. It doesn't matter whether I am hard wired or on wifi.

I am running:

Win 7 Home Premium (64bit) on a compaq CQ62-225NR Notebook with a Vision AMD Athlon II P320 Dual-Core processor.2.10 ghz with 3.00 GB ram (2.74 GB usable)

It contains an Atheros AR9285 802.11 b/g/n WiFi adapter
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller
Realtek High Definition Audio
Built in pointing device (mouse pad) with a wireless mouse connected through USB 2.0 port.

hard drive: Hitachi HTS725032A9A364 SATA Disk Device

Apparently, for some unknown reason, my computer networking modules can connect to but won't or can't talk to the cable modem/router supplied by my ISP (Charter Communications) but can access the internet though any other wifi serv... Read more

Have a USB wireless WiFi unit. To connect to the Internet. Have to disable the Local Area Connection. When connected to the Internet. If I enable the Local Area Connection. Unable to connect to the Internet. When I disable the LAC, the Internet connection is restablished. Using a D-Link boradband VPN router.

A:Wireless Network Connection will only connect to Internet if Lcl Area Connect disable

sounds about right! Your big issue will be the VPN, as it is frequently specifically
config'd to use a specific adaptor AND to force all tcp traffic thru that connection,
even though you want to do some trivial google.com search.

Consider using a Hardware Profile to define
1) a LAN connection environment (ie no WiFi)
2) a WiFi environment (w/o a LAN)

the choice occurs at boot time and the hardware is enabled/disabled per
the profile.

I have a lenovo u160 running windows 7, a couple of days ago it seemed my computer was infected with something, giving a series of security warnings I had not seen before (not av security suite). It slowed the computer down for a few minutes.

After closing these messages, there seemed to be no problem, but then my computer was no longer connect to the internet. It connects to our router/wireless network, but not to the internet.

I tried resetting and unplugging the router and the modem, but still no luck. We have two other computers on the same network that are connecting to both the network and the internet.

I tried running rkill and malwarebytes twice and no malicious items were detected.

I restored the computer to an earlier point (2-3 days earlier)

On the toolbar in the bottom right of the taskbar, it shows a 5 white signal bars, with a "!" inside a yellow triangle.
If I click on the network button it states it is "connected" to the network. It describes the connection as "excellent" (4-5/5 bars).

Above the display of the available networks, it states

"currently connected to:
Unidentified network
No Internet access"

I am not computer savvy and have not run into this problem before. Thanks for your time and help.

A:possible infection, now can connect to router/wireless network, but does not connect to the internet

Recently I switched ISPs to Qwest, after switching I noticed a severe lag in my wireless internet feed to my PC. I was able to connect to my network and access my internets as I pleased. Recently after that my mum had her laptop's wireless card fritz out. She called a gent from Geek Squad to come out and he re-worked the wireless set-up and updated the firmware for our router and everything. He was unable to get to my computer in time to set me into the network and as usual with them, their directions on how I am to set it up were forgotten and then never written down.

So, that night when I went to access my network it did not show up in the list of available networks. My wireless card is 2 weeks old and works fine, it's just a matter of integrating myself into the network. Any help would be very much appreciated.

A:Unable to connect to network on my PC.

Well first off, don't go to Geek Squad, they seriously don't know anything.

OKay and 2nd, I need more info, what is the wireless router model, what kind of secruity, what is your new ISP and if it comes down to anything, you may have to install a new update onto your ISP or for your router. My mother had the same problem when she got her new Vista laptop.

I've been trying to help a friend fix her computer. I seem to be stuck and can't figure it out.

I scanned it with AVG and the only infection that shows up is Trojan horse BackDoor.Generic14.BZSZ. I also scanned with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and quite a bit more infected files showed up. It crashes whenever I try to repair anything. The computer is running Windows 7 32bit. The only obvious symptoms I can see is it's not able to connect to any network.

Any help would be appreciated!

DDS and GMER logs have been attached.

and welcome to the Forum

I moved your threat to the Networking Forum. Has this pc ever connected to your home network before?

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error a... Read more

Windows XP Pro

On-Board NIC

Let me run down the spiel of this network saga:

Power surge happened Sunday afternoon. Sunday morning, I was connected fine. The orange light on the NIC shows it's on, but no connectivity. I have Comcast. Comcast modem is showing 4 lights - Power, Receive, Send, and Online. There is also a PC/Activity Light. That is suppose to show orange and nothing is blinking there. I also have a wireless network setup. The wireless router is responding and it seems to be getting activity from the LAN. I have a laptop that is setup wireless, but it won't connect to the internet since my modem doesn't have LAN activity.

I was on the phone w/ Comcast trying to figure this out. Replaced out network cables, reset modem numerous times, reset PC numerous times, hard-wired modem to the PC, hard-wired modem to my laptop with LAN enabled, still nothing. Comcast said to replace out modem. Replaced it out and still no connectivity. Brought my PC up to work to determine if it's a bad NIC or not. I had a live connection and I notice the orange light on my NIC is still on with or without any ethernet cable. Powered the PC on and still no connectivity. Uninstalled NIC and the PC detected the NIC. Still no connection. Checked in BIOS to see if on-board LAN is on and it is on. Reset BIOS and still no connectivity. Any other suggestions or bad NIC?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have been trying to connect to my university's network, but I am unable. I USED to be able, but now something changed and I can't. I am pretty sure that my Ethernet card is working properly, since when I plug in the cord I get a blinking green light, and it says that the driver is installed and working properly. Plus, when I run IPCONFIG, it gives me an IP Address and Subnet Mask. However, it does NOT give me either a Connection-Specific DNS Suffix nor a Default Gateway. I checked, and I am pretty sure that I have no firewalls (including the built-on XP one) running. Any idea why I can get an IP address and not connect to the network? My computer is registered with the university, and I used to be able to get online.
Thank you!!!!
