I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The free upgrade to win 10 pro failed several times.  I checked the web for problems and as a result uninstalled malwarebytes, antivirus, some drivers and some Lenovo stuff that popped up.  Finally the upgrade using the Media tool was successful.  Win 10 pro is now working on the T420.  However, only the Lenovo Companion is installed.  I bought a Yoga with Win10 pro and it came with Lenovo Companion, Settings and Account.  I have been trying to find a way on the Lenovo site to download the Settings and Account programs, but no luck.  Any suggestions?  (Probably a simple solution and I am just missing something obvious....)

I'm replacing the HDD on my T420, hopefully with one of identical capacity, but the capacity of mine is 460GB, and that's not one of the choices on all the various lists I've seen. The forum consensus also seems to be that it has only 1 port, so it can't be a combo of a 320GB drive and a 160GB drive. Can anybody tell me why the numbers don't work out?

However, this T420 seems to have something else other than the 3.5mm combo socket in place, on the right corner panel, just before the CD tray. The company I bought it from indicated that it should not be there and they suggested I try to  "Pry it out with a needle"?.Obviously I'm not going to do that untill I know what this is and why its there? I cannot connect normal head phones because there is no 3.5mm socket. Can anyone identify what this is please?3.5mm socket should be here

I attached the DM Log Collector results. Hope you'll be able to find what causes this.

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

Hi all, I have one big problem. Today, I wanted to do a new clean instal of the Windows 7 Pro on my Thinkpad T420. I have Two harddrives in it - PCIe SSD and former HDD. Main is SSD and on this storage is even the partion (about 25 GB) of recovery. Let's get to the point. I restarted the notebook, then pres the "ThinkVantage" button and the screen with language selection appeard. Then there was a menu, where I could select what to do and I've selected full recovery- like from the factory - you know what I mean. Everything looks fine, all the percentage went to 100% and then the notebook have restarted itself - like normal. But after a first Thinkpad Logo I get an error, that I have to insert the CD with Windows. Now I can't even go to the recovery menu through the "ThinkVantage" button. I can only go to Bios . Every attempt for something goes to the same screen with saying, that I have to put the CD in it?? And I don't have the CD..I have tried to look for the iso, but dead end there... Any solutions, please?? Thank you in advance for an answer!! BR Jan

Lenovo T420, Type 4177-CTO. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.  8 GB RAM,  500 GB HD, third party 128 GB SSD added. After inspecting many laptops I chose the ThinkPad T420. The only better laptop was Apple and I needed different software. An important consideration for any computer is support. Lenovo has excellent support at 1-800-426-7378. Tech support and repair happens right here in the United States.  Repairs are done in Tennessee. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a solid laptop. It is not as light as some laptops but strength and durability need to be considered. Weight of machine with a large 6 cell battery and a slice battery = 6 lb. 7 oz. (3060 kg). The laptop weighs 5 lb. 5 oz. (2430 kg) with just the large 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery weighs 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (500kg) and the 6 cell battery would then weigh 1/3 less. You can compute the difference. Keep in mind my battery life with the slice battery installed is about 17 hours. The slice battery also places the laptop on a slight angle with the rear elevated. It is about the same tilt as with the docking station. You cannot have the slice battery installed while the laptop in in the docking station. The 6 cell battery sticks out the back so it is not a perfect cosmetic fit. The 4 cell battery will look nicer, be lighter and probably last about 4 hours. The overall design is perfect in my opinion. I find no problems. Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Thnak you! Z.

Hi Zjaz123456,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?

Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.

Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.

Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!

Best regards,

Hi Lenoovoo,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would rather that you remove the battery and take it to a service center for general cleaning informing them of the immediate concern about the water spill. Do not attempt to power it on as tools may be needed to safely dry it up internally avoiding other issues.

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

Scott

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

HiT420 upgraded to Win 10 and 8MB RAM installed. When I go to Shop/support/Tech Support (update drivers etc); detect my product, it comes up with the 'old' stuff ie Windows 7 64bit and the old 2MB RAM etc.  This is causing me great confusion because I am unsure about downloading updates that do not reflect my current setup with Win 10, 8MB RAM etc. Someone (from Microsoft Community) who knows more about this than me suggests the following: and I quote: "According to the screenshots, and just as you've initially stated, it shows that your system is being detected as Windows 7.  However, this will also show if the machine was manufactured originally with a Windows 7 installed.  This would mean that the specifics of the machine on the serve page is not being detected, or it does not need to detect the machine at all.  If this perception is correct, what shows up is the default or how the manufacturer produced their machine.  Perhaps, for a reason that the machine was manufactured before the launch of Windows 10. It would be the best idea to contact the manufacture about downloading the drivers that will be compatible with Windows 10, and to suggest them that an update on their page will be helpful for the users." Additionally:- Service Bridge is running on my machine.Solution Centre reports no alerts.Lenovo System Update Centre reports no updates found.Windows updates are functioning n... I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

Have you tried to update the BIOS yet?  If not, that would be a good place to start.  You can also try pulling the battery out while having the laptop plugged in and see if you get the same results.  If so please let us know.

My pc was running well and I decided to reinstall windows but this time I have problem...I have windows 10 and my laptop is Lenovo Thinkpad T420  My power plan minimum and maximum processor state are both set to 100% and for some reason i can't change them, they are like stuck to 100%. Even when I try to restore my settings to default the maximum and minumum processor state will still remain at 100%. I want to change my minimum processor state to 5% and maximum to 80%. I did it everytime after reinstalling windows and this time it just don't work. My laptop is overheating a lot while I'm playing games or just watching videos. I already tried to reinstall windows for one more time and first thing I did was changing maximum processor state in power options but it didn't let me type other number except 100%.  To be more clear what is my problem, here is recording of it: Please help, much appreciate, Thank You!

I have a Toshiba equium A100 laptop(2007). It came with Vista and a "friend" installed Windows 7 telling me that it would run better. But it was an illegal copy (build 7600) so I get the pop up windows and black desktop etc. with no updates. Can I replace win 7 with XP? and how?
Many thanks in advance!!

A:Replacing win7 with XP?

You would have to get your toshiba OEM xp and using it wipe/partition/format and reinstall xp.

Or perhaps your unit has a recovery partition that you can use to put your system back to factory defaults.

I apologize if this thread is misplaced.

I have a Lenovo K450 with Win8 pre-installed.

I have a new copy of Win7 I purchased from Microsoft a few years back that I would like to install, but my PC seems to be locked to Win8.

I can disable the secure boot in BIOS, and install WIN7, but windows update will not function with secure boot disabled.

Can I circumvent this entirely by replacing the motherboard?

Thank You!

I'm not sue how you came to that conclusion but since your k450 does show Win 7 drivers available, a clean install of Win 7 should be quite easy with a retail disc.

Any attempts to do such a thing would be extremely costly and unwarranted IMHO. My advice would be to try and upgrade to Windows 8.1 (free via Windows Store) and tolerate the small learning curve that would be associated with the upgrade.

However, if you decide to revert to Windows 7, I see no issues in doing so (as previously stated). Good luck.

A:Consider replacing your battery - Dell, Win7

Apparently this is a known issue with some laptops. Dell and Microsoft TechNet both have threads discussing the problem.

Windows 7 "consider replacing your battery" - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

Windows 7 and the battery error "consider replacing your battery" (Part 1)

I haven't gone through all the posts to see if there's a definite fix, but it doesn't look like it considering there are eleven parts to the TechNet thread with the last post in October 2012.

I also found this article:

What should I do if I receive a "Consider replacing your battery" notification?

Hello,

Edit: My apologies; I believe I should have posted this in "Installation & Setup "

I have a new laptop (Lenovo Y40-80), fresh out of the box, and wish to replace the HDD with a SSD. I'd like confirmation that I'm taking all the correct and necessary steps to do this, as it's my first time. My plan below:

1) What I have:
- old (currently installed, original) hard drive; with OEM Windows 8.1
- new SSD: Samsung 850 EVO, 500GB
- hard drive USB docking station
- Windows 8.1 installation media on USB (which accepts both OEM and retail keys), downloaded from here: Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help
(Thank you @genet)
- my current OEM Windows 8.1 key, which I learned how to retrieve from here: Product Key - Find for Windows 8
(Thank you @Brink)

2) Download drivers from original HDD to a thumb drive

3) Open laptop - remove old hard drive - put in new SSD - close laptop (plenty of youtube videos showing this step)

4) Turn on computer, and boot from USB which contains the Windows 8.1 installation media; follow instructions to install OS using my OEM key

5) Plug in USB which contains drivers; begin by installing trackpad driver, then wireless network driver; then install all other drivers

This is everything I plan on doing. Are there any steps I should add, or above listed steps that I should do differently? I'm not sure if I should be doing anything with existing program files stored on current C: drive. Also is it necessary to do a com... Read more

A:Replacing HDD with SSD in Lenovo Y40-80; Windows 8.1

The Samsung SSDs come with a migration disk which works well unless you want a clean install w/o the bloatware. Personal data files (music/videas/documents can be copied to a ext HDD till your ready to put them on the SSD. or using the docking station after installation you can use Windows Easy Transfer(under Windows System on the Apps screen).

I trying to install Windows XP 64 bit OS on to my Lenovo R500 laptop. I have Intel core 2 P8600 processor (64 bit cpu) and 4 gb of ram. I have a 500 gb harddrive and am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate.

The installation starts as usual loading all of the drivers and files and when the bottom of the screen message says, "starting windows" I get a blue screen error message that says, "check hard drive, run chkdsk /f , if this is first time reboot, check for virii" etc.

The error is 0x0000007B!

What is that and how do I get around it?

Has Win7 Ultimate written something to my hard drive that prevents me from installing the 64 bit version of Win XP?

thanks

A:Can't install Windows XP 64 bit OS replacing Win7 Ultimate

You probably need the SATA driver for XP. You may have to integrate them into the XP install disc using nLite

You could also slipstream SP1/2/3 ad needed into the install CD at the same time using nLite.

Curious, why are you downgrading from a working Windows 7 to an old clunker like XP? Why not leave Windows 7 and run XP as a virtual client under Oracle Virtual Box or VMWare?

I've reinstalled Win7 onto a new HD but can't activiate it because i don't have the code. I was unable to transfer any of the Acer files from the crashed disk so don't have Acer recovery either. Any solutions?

A:Need Win7 product code after replacing crashed HD

I must be thick! The computer was lying on its side because the case lid was still open after installing the new HD. I've now put the lid back on and stood the case up and low and hehold, the Win& product code was on the other side of the case. Problem solved.

I have an old(?) HP Pavilion a1630n desktop pc. It originally came with XP, but I bought a Win7 retail cd and installed it as a dual boot, about a year or so ago.
If it matters it has a AMD Athlon 64 X2, and GeForce chipset.

The mb seemed to have died, the power supply test well within tolerances (even tho I have ordered another), and touching the 2 pins the power button connects to on the MB does nothing. (I have also done numerous other troubleshooting)

Any way I have 2 questions... Do I need to replace it with a MB of the same chipset? I was looking at one with an ATI Radeon chipset.

Also... will I be able to (or have to) do a Win7 repair install, so as not to lose my HDD data?

Thanks for any help!

A:Replacing motherboard, can I repair install Win7?

Tricky question to answer, (just so many variables.) though I can tell you with a fair degree of certainty that you may have to reactivate your copy of windows with the new hardware, as windows will think it has been plugged into a new computer.
