How can I disable IE prompt to open-save-save~as when downloading a file in IE11?

Q: How can I disable IE prompt to open-save-save~as when downloading a file in IE11?

Trying to figure out a global issue with are new Windows 7 image at work in IE. We have old PC's that we are replacing and on the PC's we are using an updated Windows 7 image but has the same IE 11 version 11.0.9600.18738CO on both images.
The difference though is that there is no security prompt to open PDF files on the old image. On the new one we get the prompt to Open, save or save-as and trying to find a way to remove it. Our guy that built the image did not set the Group
Policy intentionally if there is one for this. I can't find a way to remove the prompt in GPedit.msc, missing the "Launching applications and unsafe file" is missing but yet i see the option under security settings in IE. The radio buttons
are grayed out from making changes in that window.

Any thoughts?

Preferred Solution: How can I disable IE prompt to open-save-save~as when downloading a file in IE11?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's happening in IE, but the solutions I've seen on the net all say it's a windows registry issue so I wasn't sure if I should post here or in the windows help forum. I tried to search these forums and came up with a "Fatal error yada yada yada".

How do you disable the prompt "Do you want to open or save this file?" I need to listen to a lot (dozens) of small audio clips (mp3) on the web and it would go a lot faster if that dialog box didn't come up every time I clicked the link to the mp3. I want it to just open the file when I click on it instead of asking what I want to do.

Thanks ahead of time for your help. I have a project to complete and having to click Open every single time is just slowing me down so much.

I'm using IE 10.
I'd like to disable the prompt "Open, Save or Save as". Each time I tried to any document (ex. DOC or PDF file), IE will popup the follow prompt: "What do you want to do with ..."
I saw there are some similar threads, but they are particular for SharePoint.
Thank you!

A:How to disable "Open, Save and Save As" prompt

Each time I tried to any document (ex. DOC or PDF file), IE will popup the follow prompt: "What do you want to do with ..."

You might be able to add Open with... to a right-click menu.   But that will probably only help for files which are local, e.g. don't need to be downloaded.  I think the reason for the prompt is essentially to help route the download and notify
users of the fact that if they just try to open it they will be opening a temporary file.  E.g. it typically always goes into the TIF first.  You could probably confirm and refine these ideas using ProcMon, e.g. looking for tests of registry
values and writes of files.
For example, I just did a BING search for  filetype:doc, did a right-click Open (as one of the other thread's responders had suggested) and still see the above prompt, because the file has not been downloaded yet.  That's IE's job so that's how
it does it, with a prompt.  But then since there is a filetype association for the .doc extension when I choose Open no more intervention is required (although as the prompt notes "The file won't be saved automatically." so if a user tries to update it,
e.g. a Word document or a spreadsheet, anything they do would only be preserved if they did a File Save As... or whatever those applications provide for that use case.)
In fact, that warning is probably the main reason for the prompt when such an explicit Open command... Read more

Just in the last day or so, I noticed that when I download something, like a zip file for instance, I am no longer prompted to save or Save As. It just starts downloading to a temporary folder. When it's done, WinZip opens and I'm forced to extract the files without being able to just save the zip file. I can right click and "Save As", but I long for the days of convenient downloading...
Thanks for the help!
Btw, I did check the options for both IE5 (runs on Win98) and WinZip (ver.8) and didn't see anything that seemed to apply to the situation.

A:Solved: No 'Save or Save As' prompt when downloading

Apparently I'm wasting bandwidth, because I just figured out the solution. It was in the file associations, of all places, and there was a tick box (oooh, nasty) that said "Confirm open on download".
Well, thanks for at least having these forums here, even if I didn't need it this time!

Hi,

I understand there have been a few people who have asked this, but I can't seem to find a definite answer on this.
1. Can this be disabled?
2. If not, why not? What is the security feature or concept behind this prompt making it not possible to to be turned off?
3. If this can't be turned off, what do Microsoft recommend to customers in enterprise environments who have this requirement?  An e.g. is, a SAP database user who regularly has to download numerous pdf/docx files, but this prompt only
makes the user environment worse. It sure is very much understandable that regularly downloading files from a particular link, becomes annoying to the user if he/she has to click this prompt every time.
Thanks & Regards,

A:IE9 : Do you want to Open or Save this file prompt

Hi,

What I observed is when IE8 is upgraded to IE9, this issue is not experienced. In IE8 There used to be a key called HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
which stored the File Types that could either Auto-Open or not. This Key is not created in IE9, likely so as to support the policy of not auto-opening any file extensions but I believe is migrated along when IE8 is upgraded. This Key can be added
to the registry and IE9 still reads and applies settings associated with it.
Whichever File Type you need to Auto-open, simply add a Zero Length Binary value by its name. I have added AcroPDF.PDF and AcroPDF.PDF.1 with Zero Length Binary values to auto
open PDF files. These key values can either be manually added to the registry OR deployed using group policie preferences, and then the user is able to Auto-Open the PDF documents in the browser in this example. the same can be applied to .docx,
.ppt file types, etc.
Hope this helps many who are searching for this solution.

Hi
So I supidly pressed the tick box where it asked me whether I wanted to, be each time i opened a rar file, be asked whether to save or open the file. Now everytime I open a .rar file it bypasses the 'do you want to save or open file?' and automatically saves and opens the file using the rar program thing. Only I dont want to buy it, and as I've exeeded the 'evaluation' period this screen keeps appearing asking me to by it blah blah. So my question is:
How do I restore this option?
Thanks a bunch!

A:Restoring the prompt 'Do you want to save or open this file?' box option

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/0...ore-check-box/

Open any folder with Windows Explorer or open My Computer, and then click on Tools in the menu bar and subsequently Folder Options in the drop down menu. Alternatively, go to Control Panel and select Folder Options.

In the Folder Options dialog, select File Types tab. This tab lists every file type associated with Windows and may take a while to open.

Locate and highlight (select) the file type or extension that you want to revert back the file download behavior to ask for open or save confirmation and stop the automatic opening or saving of downloaded file.
Click on Advanced button. You have to log on or login on user account with Administrator or Power User privileges to use this function.
In the Edit File Type window, clear (untick) the Confirm open after download check box.

Click OK when done.
Repeat the procedure for other filetype and ext that you want to change back to normal default.

Hello,
we are soon to rollout IE11 (currently IE9 is in use). One question came up while testing the IE11 configuration: When you download a file (for eg pdf or docx) sometimes you can choose between "save, open, cancel", sometimes only "open, cancel",
sometimes only "save, cancel".
Which group policy is responsible for the possibilities? Even in local intranet zone we sometimes don't have all three options?!
Thanks for any help

The way I see it:  You say you don't want it cached, so the only thing you can do is save it; otherwise it could be reused for rendering.

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've tried a bunch of reg fixes - here are just a few so I don't get responses rehashing applied changes:

JS.failed to load is a Java Script error. Download the latest Java. As for the Word Save, try saving it to your Desktop, not the download file you are saving it to. The error is telling you, you do not have permission to save to that folder. If you continue to have problems saving Word file. Malwarebytes doesn't see anything wrong. I generally get a http://192.168.1.1:5678/igd.xml spike precedes the 127... spike

Typing http://127.0.0.1.:5357/767aa349-1aa1...-01eb939773ce/ into Run gets "Bad Request - Invalid Hostname

Can anyone else on Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit try this for themselves?

I don't seem to have any weird issues otherwise.

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:

If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

Hi,

I get download prompts "Do you want to open or save this file ?" like the one shown in attachment with this post.
I did not try to download this still i get this prompt again and again and it is annoying.
I searched on net and read about set path to temporary internet files in 'Internet options' but this didn't work for me.
Is this a kind of virus or malicious software ?
Please help me stop this message.

Thanks a lot

A:Do you want to open or save this file ?

Does this always happen with files that have the ending .png? Your browser should be displaying them as images within the webpage. When did this first start?

I will try to make it simple...
I use mozila firefox.
When i click on a link to download something(picture, song etc)
It is automatically downloaded and save to my desktop.
I want to change the (save) option with the open option.

A:Open file not save

Hi there, firefox doesn't have a open option. It just has the save option when downloading something. However, you change change the default saving option by clicking Tools>Options>Save Files To>Browse.

Hello readers,

I was wondering whether there is a way to tweak IE6 so that the default web page saving scope is a Dragnet-style "just-the-HTML-facts, ma'am," rather than the complete page with all the graphics from the advertisers etc.

I dislike manually having to override the default prewired into the product every time I want to save HTML ONLY.

Thanks for your help!

A:IE6: File>Save As>. . .>Save as type>Joe Friday?

The only way I have seen, is to completely disable the save as web page complete. It will then default to save as web page, html only. But the save as webpage complete is missing altogether.

Open up regedit.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Infodelivery\Restrictions

Create a new dwrod value with the name NoBrowserSaveWebComplete

Double click the NoBrowserSaveWebComplete and set the value data to 1

I have accidentally changed the default for the ' Save,Open, File'
dialogue box that comes up when downloading anything. Can anyone tell me how to get it back please ?

Are you saying that when you download a file, such as a document from an email, after you save, you no longer automatically get a window asking if you would like to open the file or folder? That is what is happening for me as of today.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

A:No thumbnails in open/save file

Welcome to Seven Forums Cath.

First of all I don't understand how you are opening a folder with a browser?
Press the windows logo key + Pause Break to open System Properties and follow the diagram below to "For Cath" and check "Show Thumbnails Instead of Icons".

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

This may help too: Icon Cache - Rebuild

and

Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset
You may need to do a repair install since sfc /scannow won't run.

When I click on a link for a file, like an mp3, rdp, etc. the only options I get are save or cancel.  For example, if I try to connect to a windows azure virtual machine I have to download the RDP file - I can't just click open.  Is this an IE11
issue?  Is it a group policy setting?  Is this something I can fix/change?  Can I have my IT department change something?  This is really frustrating.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

I am running Windows 8.1 and IE11

A:Can't open a file, can only save or cancel

Hi,
Where do you download these mp3, rdp files? Could you please provide us with the link for downloading?
Do this problem occurs in all files from all websites?
Have you tried running IE in No Add-on mode?
I recommend you to reset these options.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/reset-opensave-choice-for-internet-explorer-downloads-in-vista/
As for me, some websites may customize the download experience. This can be activated by a new HTTP header called X-Download-Options which can be set to noopen. When that header is passed with a file attachment IE will not provide the option to directly open
the file, instead you must first save the file locally and then open it.

 Hello Moderators,Members and Guests
When opening a file, I used to have the open check box, and the save check box options. I must have clicked on something, because now i am presented with only the save or cancel option. I have tried to find out how to gain the open option again, but so far no luck. I am running Windows 7, and I use Foxit PDF reader. I will be eternally grateful for any help from the good people of Bleeping Computer.Thank you for your time

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

What exactly did you do to fix the problem? You can't have "solved" in the thread title if you don't post the solution...

I have approximately 3 end users who receive the pop up window when downloading. The issue is, nothing happens when they click any of the options.  "Open" and "Save" simply get rid of the prompt, and "Save As" opens a dialog
box to browse to a spot to save, but it does not save.  It isn't a Windows group or a group policy otherwise we'd have more than a handful of users with the issue. Firefox is an alright workaround but we use IE11 in our environment so it's not
a permanent option.
How do I rid my users of this pop-up and have them always receive the orange ribbon at the bottom of their screen?

When I download a file (eg. some utilty appln or a zip file, program etc) and click "Save" (to a certain location/folder on my hard drive) the file is properly saved.

- however, after the file is saved I would normally see the dialog box again and it would allow an option to "Open" the downloaded file.

The files such as .zip, .mp3, .pdf etc are asscoiated with their respective applns.

But for some reason I'm no longer getting the download dialog box to show again to enable the file to be "opened".

Any ideas on how I can get this convenient "Open" functionality back?

Many thanks.

P.S. I'm running Win XP - SP2.

First of all, my english is till improving so plz dont mind my mistakes and i hope some of u will be able to understand me

I have a really "weird" problem going on in my computer and i currently use windows xp sp 3.

I start a program (let us say paint in this case).
i want to open a file, i press file - open - and then try to go to My documents for finding the file i want to use, the whole program stops responding and closes within some seconds.
This problem happens in all my programs where i want to save/open a file. I just cant go to other folders and save/open a file from there!
Once I got a error reporting box saying this:
"DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It started to be like this for some days ago, and i couldnt find a solution to it.
Cant remember that i downloaded something that can cause it all.

Thanks for all answers!

You likely have a Windows Explorer issue related to a virus/malware.

Please follow this sites pre-posting process outlined here:

I have some *.avi files I would like to let my users download from my Flash interface. But as most of you know when you click on a *.avi file it opens in IE not even giving you the option to download it to your desktop and view it later. So I would like to know if there is any way around this?

Yes I know I can rename the *.avi file to something else and I know I can zip it but I would like to keep it untouched.

I also know you can right click and choose "Save Target As" but not while in Flash and I want to keep it simple.

Let me know if you know a way to do this inside of Flash or even in HTML / J-script.

Thanks,

Hi there,
I have the same problem already reported in the forum:File|Open and File|Save As does not work at all for any application. Basically nothing happens, the dialog never opens an in my mail is not possible to upload files.. nothing, the common dialog to handle files never opens. I tried to type sfc/scannow in DOS mode (cmd) hoping utility will fix it. But didn?t work because it said that I must be the administrator but the problem is that I am the administrator (I am the only user and register as admin). What is wrong? What can I do?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Seven Forums fernandoluis. You must run the cmd prompt as admin

Start> Type CMD in search box> Right click on CMD in search results above and click on Run As Administrator> Then use the sfc/scannow
