Barebones Systems Site

Q: Barebones Systems Site

About a year ago, I found a link *somewhere* that led to a site which sold some decent barebones systems (no O/S) for under $200. Does anyone know of such a site? I can't remember where it was.

For what it's worth, I currently run an older Athlon 700 MHz (specs in my signature), but I've heard it's not really a good system for running XP. It's been fine for 98SE, but I'm leery of using it for XP. So, I'm thinking about a second system (the 98SE for games, personal pics, etc. and one with XP for internet, Office, and so forth).

I don't use any of the newer graphics-intensive games...just some older ones...and don't use programs like Photoshop.

The truth is, I'm not sure what to tell you about what I need, but I believe a faster CPU and more memory would be good for XP (am I right about that?).

Anyway, I'd sure appreciate any thoughts

Preferred Solution: Barebones Systems Site

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was thinking about getting a new desktop pc to run internet from my tv. Watch movies etc.
I wanted to ask about barebones sytems.
Are they a cheaper and better alternative to prebuilt systems?
How involved is it to build one and do you have to be a IT specialist to do it?
What do they come with preinstalled ?
What sort of costs are involved and what should I look for when buying one?

I have an anomaly that I first thought was site-related, then began to believe that it was browser-related, and now discover that I've no idea to what it's related!

I have five systems running Windows 7-64, four of which are running Enterprise Edition, and the fifth, Ultimate. All are completely current with Microsoft Updates, and all have the same software set.

This anomaly is apparent using Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox (V 31.0) browsers, so it's not (necessarily) the fault of browser ad-ins.

I like to read obsolete books. I often look at Pirate Bay and/or Demonoid to see what may be available. (demonoid.ph)

On the Demonoid site, I'm unable to use their "search" function on four of my five systems. (The fifth system, running Enterprise, works just fine!) If I start by using keywords in the "Torrent Search" box on the Demonoid "Home" page, the screen basically clears and remains static. The same behavior is exhibited if I add any "word", (or words) to the "Keywords" box on the "Torrents" page "Filter" panel.

None of this is life-threatening! I've one system I can use to "search", so life is good. On the other hand, I can't abide a riddle such as this without at least TRYING to solve it. ANY help or suggestions will be gratefully appreciated. If any readers have the time to try this on their own systems, and run into the same anomaly, I'd be inter... Read more

(Please pardon my redundancy - I have posted this to the Customer Care Board and Client Service forums - just hoping to correct what I hope was an accidental change in support policy.)
This is not a technical comment but it is a comment about Dell's Technology Support. Recently the support site for laptops, and I presume other areas though I have not checked, was revised to change its structure. In the process many items were removed notably having to do with drivers for older systems. Even if a system is past warranty that does not remove the responsibility for Dell to continue to provide the most recent (even if old) drivers especially since the cost of doing so is trivial. This is especially the case when Dell is the only source for specific drivers. A specific example is a Dell Vostro 3700 laptop which uses the embedded GPU in the CPU as well as outboard nVidia GPU; the hybrid video architecture is such that NVidia provides no driver and re-directs users to Dell's site. In the case of this specific model, most of the drivers that were present a month ago are now gone.
Dell laptops have two things going for them - good products at a good price and a great support site. This has prompted me to continue focusing upon Dell - e.g. two new 5759's in 2017, and to recommend Dell to colleagues and friends. I have had recent occasion to review some very old systems on HP's support site - all relevant drivers continue to be available. I strongly recommend that Dell c... Read more

From ZDnet

The Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) has taken the site down for maintenance because they "believe we may be infected with malware."
ISC is the group behind the open-source Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) program. BIND is arguably the most popular DNS software on the planet. It is certainly the most used DNS program on the Unix and Linux systems that make up most of the Internet's fundamental infrastructure.
If the BIND code itself has been corrupted, and you've updated your DNS BIND server with the code, you could be in for a world of hurt. Your site might now have a security hole on it. It's also all too possible that it could be used for a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

I like to make a second install of XP Home(Upgrade version) on a seperate partition for gaming only. Nothing else other than Acrobat Reader,Windows Media Player and my joystick software(along with my games of coarse)are installed on that partition. I use Black Vipers XP performance tips and shut down all unnecessary sevices and also keep the partition defragged. This allows for a lean environment for my recource hungry games to operate in and it seems to work well.
My question is,when installing XP Home is their anything I can eliminate during or after installation to further 'lean-out' XP. I want an absolutely 'barebones' OS(different than the 'stock' recource hogging XP)for my CPU/GPU and the rest of my system to function in and allow max recources for running my games. Thanks

A:'barebones' XP

In the installation, No.

But I think you can turn explorer off using a registry key... By turning explorer off, you don't get your desktop or your start menu, taskbar.... etc... but you can launch applications using the task manager. So that means theres no overhead of the windows shell.

Or you could wait for xplite at www.litepc.com which doesn't seem to be happening soon...

Just bought a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, 3GB DDR2 800MHz desktop computer. It came without an installed OS. I have a legitimate Windows XP upgrade CD. When I try to install it I get an error message. To paraphrase the message said setup can not read the UPGRADE disc, before installing a full version of one of windows earlier operating systems. I don't get any. Is there anything I can do besides by a full version of one of Windows' operating systems?

A:XP CD & Barebones CD??????

If it is an upgrade CD, you need an earlier version of Windows for it to upgrade from. If you could get an earlier full version CD from somewhere (make one somehow, there must be ways to do it) you can put that CD in the driveand press enter at this message and it will install.

Hey guys,

i am thinking about upgrading from my dell precision 420 to a new barebones kit from tigerdirect

(barebone kit : Click here. )
And i wanted to buy that, get the fan, and just switch the graphics card and my hard drives.

But, i was talking to a friend and he said i couldn't switch the hard drives cause it could cause problems with windows....

so my question is...

can i use my hard drives from my dell precision (they are not stock hard drives), and just throw them in to my new barebones kit?

Thanks for the answers,

Hey guys, I am having an issue with performance.
Ive cut most of the processes out that im not using and whatnot, but im trying to get my games to run better.

I have a decent videocard, only 256 megs though.

Just there are so many processes running that i dont need while im playing games (IE: network processes, antivirus, etc). Im trying to find a way that I can switch users and have it be extremely limited, and only whats needed for me to run the games.

is this even possible?
everytime i edit the services on my user account, it also changes my admin account.
Id be surprised if there wasnt a way to do this.

any pointers?

A:How to run barebones

Please fill in your System Specs in bottom left corner of your post.

Your RAM and processor will have a big say in it.

Uncheck all freeloaders in msconfig>Startup except AV and gadgets/stickies if u use em.

Then use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials or Avast5 with the Win7 firewall.

Edit graphics effects of sliding/fading/dragging intact at Computer>Properties>Advanced Settings>Performance.

Run your WEI score, then click it for Advanced Tools to look for cued issues, google repeat errors in Performance Log (and Event Viewer>Admin) , Generate a System health Report.

I wouldn't tweak Win7 other than normal System settings as it will almost always work against you. In beta we learned that turning off a dozen services gained back no performance because Win7 was already stripped down and has become the Black Viper.

Lately, I've heard some people say that the Unix code is more secure than the Windows code and that the Windows code has many holes and bugs in it. Before, I always thought Unix systems (for example, Mac) were less likely to get infected by viruses only because they had a lower market share. However, I'm starting to wonder if the Unix code is really more secure than the Windows code. Is this true? Also, does the Windows code really have that many bugs and holes in it?

A:Are Unix systems more secure than Windows systems?

It is rather debatable, its harder to compare two completely different codes and say one is flawed and one is not.

Though Unix/Linux does appear to be a bit more secure, which is why Apple's OS X (their baby), is based on a unix-code.

I'm looking at barebones kits on TigerDirect. Haven't had much experience with the newer motherboards. Can someone here look at this system and tell me what they think?

It looks like the mboard has both an ide slot and serial ata slots for sata drives. Would I be able to use my existing ide hard drive in this system or is that slot only for cd drives usually?

Obviously, I'd need ddr ram - my old system has sd I'm almost sure of - which this machine comes with 1gig of.

Unless I can resurrect my old machine tomorrow with a new power supply, I either need to build a new one or order one from gateway/dell. I have xp pro that I can legally put on any machine I build so I don't really need to get a brand new one, although sometimes it's just better to go ahead and do that. :S

Hello everyone, im not my 2nd bare bones from tiger direct. My first consisted of:

THERMALTAKE Soprano RS 101 ATX Case Black w/Window
Seagate 500GB Serial ATA HD 7200/32MB/SATA-3G
Power Up 800w Power Supply w/2 80mm/Blue

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2 CPU Black Edition
Asus M2N-SLI nForce 560 Socket AM2 Motherboard

to run

PNY GeForce XLR8 9800 GX2 1GB PCIe w/Dual Link DVI.

after 3 or 4 days we could never get the motherboard to boot, no led, no sound, nothing, and after alot of looking around i found that quite a few other people who had bought that barebones package had the same issue so i decided to return the motherboard, CPU, and ram.

next from tiger i ordered:

XFX GeForce 8200 MCP Socket AM2+ Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2 CPU Black Edition
OCZ SLI 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2x1024MB)

to go with everything i kept. it has onboard graphics so i left the 9800 out until i can get the PC set up. Ive cleared the CMOS, tried useing the memory sticks in all the configurations possible (single and dual channel). tested the power suppy and its working like it should. the LEDs on the motherboard work and the only response ive gotten was the keyboard lights will flash for a split second then nothing and i never get signal to the moniter

Anyone know a decent barebones PC I can start with? Just something with the basics like motherboard, power supply, drives, etc.. So I can just add my own memory, hard drive, etc.. Or should I just put one together at IBUYPOWER or something?

How much do you want to spend is a better question? Here is a link to a website that has a whole bunch of barebone set ups that are extremely good and have a bunch of motherboard + AMD 64X2 set ups. The AMD 64X2 6000 which is pushing 3.0GHz each is a solid set up. Click this link!

Just bought this: Intel Celeron (D) 2.8 GHz ASUS BAREBONE Computer.

Gonna start table-top building when it is delivered, next week. Shouldn't I be all right installing my take out (of this machine) 40 GIG HD with/XP Pro already installed?
Shouldn't it just boot up;
or what should I do to insure a smooth start?

I built this machine in October, 2001 and though it has 280 GIG of hard drive, it needs some refinement. I decided to network the two, using this machine for storing/archiving my 61,000+ digital photography files and use the new, and probably last machine, for day in day out work and home/family communications.

What first, besides updating the XpPro program on the old HD??

It looks like an amazing bargin. It so cheap because it has no, PSU, no RAM, no Optical Drive and no HDD. Also what sort of upgrades can I perform on this machine, I.E PCI Cards, RAM, HDD, Optical etc.

The most important thing that I need to know is what PSU and what the general cost of all these parts will be. I am fairly flexible seeing as the barebones is only £20.

Hi all,

My computer is a 6 year old Dell Dimension 9100 and I was thinking of building a new one and saw this system at Tiger Direct. I don't play too many games, but do a lot of photo and video work. I was wondering if you could give me your opinions about it:

MSI H61M-P23 B3 Intel Sandy Bridge Barebones Kit - MSI H61M-P23 B3 Mobo, Intel Core i3-2100 CPU, Corsair 4GB DDR3 RAM, Seagate 500GB HDD, 24x DVDRW, Diablotek ATX Mid-Tower Case, Eagle 550W PSU at TigerDirect.com

Thanks in advance

A:your opinions about a barebones system please

That should be ok, as long as the Sandybridge issues have been resolved on that board, and I think they all have been.
The only things I would change...

Go with the i5 or even i7 processor
And I would up the PSU to 650W minimum. The reason is, if you decide to add more HDD's, a Video Card, and many USB devices (such as External Drives), your gonna run into issues with power.

The RAM should be good for now, depending on how much rendering you really do.
If it is just novice stuff, 4G is plenty.

Hello, earlier this week i purchased a barebones kit from tigerdirect.com, this one to be exact: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1336887&Sku=B69-0454 This is my first barebones kit and first time assembling a computer, though I pretty much knew how to do everything. After getting it assembled, I plugged it in, hooked it up to my parents PC monitor since I do not have one of my own at the moment. I turned it on and the monitor would come on for a second or two with a lit up black screen then go into sleep/stand by mode. I've checked my wiring several times now, everything is as it should be. The computer seems to turn on, the LEDs work, the dvd drive works, the CPU fan runs. but the monitor will not come out of standby mode. I'm currently using the monitor on my parents PC and it is working fine. I was hoping some one here may be able to give me some insight into what the problem maybe. As of right now I dont have an extra monitor to test with. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Hello tech support people,
I have a new Dell D630 Latitude laptop purchased last April off a reseller on ebay. When I got it I made sure it was working but am just now getting around to using it for the intended purpose.

XP pro v2002, SP2, core 2duo. C drive properties shows 8.38 GB being used on the 80 GB drive [74.4 capacity].

I ran Belarc Advisor, it shows XP, roxio, avira av, norton systemworks 2003, latter 2 installed by me.

I did not check the used space before these two additions.

My Documents/pictures/music = around 250 KB

I bought this to dedicate to audio work/recording, before I start installing software and tweaking XP [possibly reinstalling first] I'd be really curious to know what is taking up all this space? My research tells me 4 or 5 Gigs would be normal.

A friend recommended I run the Norton cleansweep, it only removed 2 Mb. I would prefer not going on the internet with this machine, I installed Avira as a safety net because it is known to not interfere with the audio software I will be installing [Magix Samplitude].

thank you for any insights,

A:[SOLVED] Why Over 8 Gb On New Laptop, Barebones

It's difficult to say without looking, but if I had to guess I'd say that maybe its one of these things;

1.System Restore has more reserved than normal. To check this right-click on My Computer and select Properties. Then goto the System Restore tab.

2.Perhaps the Recycle Bin has a good chunk of the disk reserved, to check that right-click on the Recycle Bin and select properties. There you should see a slider that sets how much drive space is reserved for deleted files.

3.If it isn't those things I'd also check the windows swapfile size and see how big it's been set to. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, then the Advanced tab. In the Performance box hit the Settings button and then Advanced tab. At the bottom there should be a box Virtual Memory with a button Change. Hit that and there you can see how big the Windows PageFile<Swapfile> is in MB.

Try that and report back your findings if you were successful or not.

Need the system for basic web surfing, light game play and would like something capable of burning HD camcorder to DVD for now maybe BD later. Seems the best bang for buck is in the I-5 2500K CPU arena so I look at Tiger Direct and the choices are pretty much between Asus, MSI and Gigabyte. Also is there a big difference in the Z68 and Z77 chipsets? Looking at these systems to which I will add a OS at purchase and GPU, more memory and a BD drive when funds allow:

There are also a couple of I-7 systems that I would consider, but they would really push my budget to the limit. Is it worth going up to the I-7 for what we would be doing which could prohibit the other upgrades I'm planning?

Wow I haven't posted in a while; i was just wondering...
I've been using a crappy old set up for like 5 years and I'm heading to college soon anyway, so I figured it was time to get a new computer. Macs are WAY TOO expensive and pre-built PCs are overpriced. I've been working On Digital Design, Video, and Audio production/engineering for fun since I got this crappy thing and was wanting to a find a reasonably priced Barebones kit to build for doing my Technological STUFF.
Is THIS BAREBONES KIT a good idea to run such programs as Vegas, Sonar, Photoshop, After Effects, and other stuff like that...?

Without question, Windows 7 is a fine OS. It just so happens that I prefer Vista over 7 by a longshot. I have a HP Slimline that finding a graphics card is a near impossibility. I will not buy a new Slimline.
One of two things is going to happen. Find a barebones that will accept the HD in my current slimline or a barebones onto which I can install Vista.
Does anyone know where I can purchase a LEGITIMATE Vista disc, not an upgrade that infects eBay?

Better yet, if someone knows of a video card that will fit into the chassis of an HP s3700y, you are my new best friend. I just took delivery of a Gigabyte card that was 1/2 inch too long (hit the HD cage). I previously posted the issue and am getting tire of dealing with it. Onboard video going?

Thanks in advance!!!

A:Windows Vista and a barebones

I found this at amazon: Amazon.com: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate FULL VERSION [DVD] [OLD VERSION]: George Sansonm: Software

If you want to buy from ebay look for new orders with non-stock pics and see if they are sealed. You still take a chance. If you take a look at this one it appears to still be sealed as it is advertised: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Windows-Vist...item4d01de51e3

As for video cards perhaps one of these will work: Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Video Cards & Video Devices, Desktop Graphics Cards, Low Profile

My brother uses my computer. But I don't trust him on it because he always messes it up so I'm trying to make him his own account. And all I want him to be able to do on it is check his email. Because that's all he really needs. But whenever those ads come up, "shoot ten ducks and win a free iPad"
He clicks them and downloads whatever it asks.
Can I get rid of the ads all together so he can't even see them? Or is restricting downloads sufficient

A:Trying to create a barebones user account, can I do this?

Suppressing ads is possible with an add-on, but it's also easy to disable any add-on with just a couple of mouse-clicks. But you may want to give it a try. One of the best is an add-on called "Adblock Plus" if you use Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...k-plus/?src=ss

Got a Slix (basicly a Shuttle XPC FS51 until Creative got hold of it, Fu**ed it up and then slaped thier name on it

So anyway, used to run a P4 2.4Ghz (533MHz Version) and it rocked (with enough help from my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro) - I was getting like 4800 - 4900 3DMARK03 Marks (Now known as "FUTUREMARK")..

put the new P4 3.06Ghz cpu in thier and she don't wanna know!! Not even worth benchin! SiSoft Sandra 2003 recons i might as well have a one Gig CPU in there!!

I guessed the Shuttle barebones didn't support the new CPU so i downloaded a BIOS update from the SiS website... It comes in an .exe format which was weired coz i am more familiar with the old Award .bin process (having always had Abit high-end Boards).. I guess i just need to boot into DOS mode and execute the file and it will do the rest..

Problem is, i can't boot into dos as i don't have a floppy drive and I am running NTFS partition so can't use the Win98 Boot disk..
I made a bootable CDROM in NERO and popped on the BIOS update file.. When i get to DOS, i dont have a C: coz i'm Running NTFS format so the hard drive isnt detected, so i don't have anything for it to write to.. i have put a copy of the BIOS update file on my C: so if i could ever get to see the Hard Drive on C: in DOS mode i could simply execute it...

any of you guys got any ideas of how to get around it?

A:P4 3.06Ghz with Hyperthreading in a Shuttle Barebones

I believe that Award BIOS is still in .bin format, and the exe file is the flash ultiliy. Perhaps the bios was not fully downloaded.

This link might help you though its an MSI link, it teaches you how to flash on non-FAT32 systems.

Hey I'm looking to sell my old laptop and probably get around $400. I want to make my own laptop but i have no idea of what to get. I saw similar threads on building a pc and i was looking for some help on laptops. I guess i am looking to spend no more than $1200. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks

I think you would be much better off buying a off the shelf laptop. Not to many regular people build their own laptops.

Hello there, this is my first post. I just received a barebones kit and assembled it, but it won't boot. The power LED goes on, the power switch works only for powering on but doesn't turn the machine off, the fan spins OK, the hard drive seems to be working. But the keyboard is not recognized, the monitor shows nothing and the CD ROM looks dead. The machine doesn't even beep. I tried clearing the CMOS, double-checking connections, reconnecting devices one at a time, but still nothing happened.

The barebone kit consists of

-PCChips A13G+ GeForce 6100 Socket AM2 Motherboard
-AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Socket AM2 CPU
-US Modular 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533 MHz
-Power Up Black Mid T ATX Case w/450w PSU

to which I added

-Maxtor SATA II/300 160 Gb hard drive
-Zalman CPU cooler CNPS9500 AM2
-CD ROM, monitor, keyboard and mouse I had on my previous machine and work perfectly.

The only thing I felt afraid of when assembling the machine was the more than average force I had to apply to the Zalman cooler in order to make it fit in the AM2 socket. Can it be pressing too much on the processor? Any suggestions and help will be highly appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

A:Help! Barebones system doesn't start

Try checking a few things...

1. disconnect all peripherals - hdd, CD etc & try booting

2. try another Power Supply - even if it is new

3. double check theres no Motherboard spacers in the wrong spot & shorting board

4. Try known working RAM

Good luck!
