I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dusty,

Do not confuse "external monitor" with "DUAL Monitor". The latter is what you apparently want. The former is what you have.

You can Google: Thinkpad 770 external monitor

and view item:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=PFAN-3PVSCN

which will confirm what you have with the 770.

Hi!
I recently bought a DVI cable to plug my external LG monitor to my laptop to run nVidia's DualView (stretch format) across the two monitors. I'm using a beta driver (169.04 from laptopvideo2go.com), and when I enter nVidia control panel and go into the setup additional monitors tab, it only lets me choose "choose only ONE monitor". So I did that just to test that my monitor was plugged in right, and it worked. So I KNOW that my monitor is working and is being recognized by Vista. But when going into display settings byt right clicking on my desktop, it also only recognizes 1 monitor. Is it my beta display driver messing my Vista up? Or what could it be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

for drivers to work properly in vista i'm pretty sure you have to have signed drivers, since it's beta are you sure they are signed?

Hi,

I'm currently using two 4:3 monitors of my PC, and I'd like to substitute them with one big wide screen monitor. The only thing I'm worry about is that I won't be able to have different "spaces" for my windows that they could expand to (so I could have, for example, my e-mail on the right part, and my browser on the left).

All I've found so far are virtual desktop software, but that's not what I need. I'm looking for something that splits the visible desktop into multiple parts.

Any ideas? I'm using Vista by the way
Appreciate your help

Hi all, thanks in advance for your attention.

I'm using a television (32p) as a second monitor in extended mode so that I can watch a movie in the TV and play a game in the monitor (this was my main goal). Monitor and TV lays in two different ambients, both connected to the same pc, one by normal VGA cable and the other by HDMI. I managed to differentiate the audio output so that VLC player sends it's audio to the HDMI (so that only the TV plays it) and the rest of system sounds, media players and games outputs to the speakers (basically only the VLC audio is directed to another output device). I reached my goal so that I can watch a movie fullscreen in the TV and play a game in the monitor fullscreen too without any interference from one another (nor audio or video).

The thing is, because I have the TV in another ambient I can't actually see what's going on in it, as I just "throw" the VLC window to the TV from my main monitor. And here's the question: There's a way to see the TV's desktop in my monitor? Without having to set it as main monitor so to not really switch between desktops.. The perfect thing would be if I could see the TV's desktop in a window like in remote desktops applications.

Just and example of what it could be:

Graphics Card: (Dual) HIS ATI Radeon HD 5770, 1024 Mb (CrossfireX enabled)
Motherboard: MSI, 890FXA-GD70 (MS-7640) , 1.0

I built a new computer recently and all was going well until I tried to set up dual monitor on this new computer. My monitors are both Acer, models AL1916W and P191W. I'm coming from a system that had 32bit xp with an nVidia GTS250 running dual monitors.

I have windows 7 up to date on the new computer and ATI drivers are up to date as well. The issue that I'm having is my P191 monitor is not being pulled out of standby and windows, as well at ATI CCC, says it only supports a 640x400 resolution. I've tried plugging this monitor in solo in every DVI port in my primary ATI card, swapped both cables, and swapped card positions, yet the monitor still stays in standby whilst my AL1916 runs like a champ and I can edit all of it's settings. I've gone through all the options in ATI CCC to set up dual monitors and I get nothing. I didn't have a problem with the P191 on my XP system.

So how can I get my P191 monitor working? ATI CCC and windows knows that the monitor is there and they both can identify the model of the monitor, but windows refers to it as a generic non-PnP monitor (the AL1916 is refered to as a generic PnP monitor). I tried to see if there are any drivers for the P191 mon... Read more

A:Solved: Dual Monitor: Monitor still in standby

First, make sure your video card drivers are up to date. Second check in device manager to make sure it actually recognizes the monitor, if it does, remove/uninstall it, and let it reinstall the monitor. then go to the screen resolution and click on detect, if it still cannot recognize the monitor and allow you to change the resolution, I'd say the next step would be to go into your graphics card driver software, but unfortunately, I'm an Nvidia junkie and don't know how to use ATI's software.

I hope I helped =D.

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

Currently both monitors work, however they just show the same image. If I right click on the desktop and go to properties> display settings it only registers 1 monitor connected.

Any ideas how to resolve this please?

Lately my comp has been giving me nothing but grief. Every scan I do only shows cookie trackers and nothing more. For some reason I cant run trend micro in safe mode, so Im trying to figure out why, it gives me an error. It tells me I can only run virus scans in safe mode since it doesnt detect a network which is fine so I click Ok and then another error comes up telling me to check the online support. Anyways, the real problem I am here for is my dual monitors dont work all of a sudden. I have 2 Viewsonics, 1 is a CRT monitor and the other a brand new LCD. Both were working fine and I was in heaven. All of a sudden I boot up my comp one day and the crt monitor shuts off. It works fine when booting but as soon as I get to the windows log on, it goes blank and I can only work from the LCD. I also have both of them working in safe mode so I ruled out the possibility of the crt going in the garbage. Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem may be? I can post a Hijack log if needed

For what I can tell, this is an All in One so: Integrated display, and the I/O specs only list a Display Port output and a VGA input, nothing else for video, so technically the only way to add a second monitor would be to use an expensive Pro monitor with Display Port inputs.
Please provide exact details as to how you have both monitors hooked up. If you are not sure, snap photos with your phone and upload them here.

Hello,
I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right rorum. I've done a little searching on the forum but can't pinpoint anything exactly. I have a new Dell Precision Workstation with a Nvidia Quadro NVS 295 video card. The left monitors color is much duller than the right one. If I place just a white background the one on the left looks grayed out, and the one on the right looks nice and white. I tried adjusting the brightness and contrast on it but that didn't seem to make it look the same as the right one. I contaced Dell and I am getting the monitor on the left replaced. I'm not sure if it's the monitor, video card or the settings. If someone could lead me in the right direction to correct this that would be great. Maybe if there's a software app out there that will adjust it or whatever. I even tried playing around with the Nvidia control panel. I'm just not sure what I'm doing.

Thanks,
Tony

i have a nvidia geforce 6200 video card that supports one vga monitor and one dvi monitor. i have two vga monitors and want to connect them for dual screens. the problem is that for some reason my video card has a dvi-d slot instead of a dvi-i slot. at first i bought a dvi-i to vga adapter to connect to my lcd monitor not realizing i had the dvi-d slot and of course it didn't work (as dvi-i has more pins than the dvi-d). i then purchased a dvi-d to vga adapter. i plugged both monitors in and rebooted my computer but the second monitor (connected by the adapter) isn't being picked up by the computer. i asked the guy at the store and he said the dvi-d cannot be converted to vga. is this true? any help would be appreciated. thx

A:Solved: dual monitor set up problem

I believe that's correct without an expensive adapter. Here's a typical adapter that I've found in a search for such an adapter, other prices seem similar. http://www.nti1.com/dvi-vga.html?gclid=CIzFju-gpokCFSoIFQodchSjUg

I think I'd consider a new video card. Are you sure that is DVI-D output from that card? Here's some additional info I found, which supports the store's contention.

http://www2.dvigear.com/faq.html

What is the difference between DVI-I vs. DVI-D?

These are the two most confusing digital connectors available. DVI-D allows for digital only signal transmission. However, DVI-I allows for digital or analog signals to pass over this cable/connector. You could have a VGA connector on one end of a cable and a DVI-I connector on the other and transmit an analog signal to the display. You could also have a DVI-I or DVI-D connector on one end and transmit a digital signal. The DVI-D male connector will connect/transmit with a DVI-I female. The DVI-D female connector will not connect/transmit with the DVI-I male.Click to expand...

please note that everything except the vid appears on both screens! i dumped the vids and redownloaded from the site, but same problem comes up.

1. if i try the tv only choice again, how can i close wmv or realplayer window by clicking on my keypad? is there a place that would give me a list of these keypad things to use instead of the mouse? if i can use the keypad it seems i can live with the tv only as long as i know i can keypad back to my laptop screen.

2. while i am at it, when i try to read print on the tv it is impossible. is that normal or is there something i can do to make it as clear as on a laptop screen?

3. any clue as to the reason the vids do not play dually?

Also, do the monitors have to be the same (17' CRT and 17' CRT) or can they be different (17' LCD and 17' CRT)??

I thought the monitor was broken at first, but after playing around with the display settings for a while i got the monitor to work again, And it would work for the rest of the day.
the problem is, when i turn off the computer for a bit, and turn it back on. I have the same problem all over again. And whatever I did last time to fix it, won't work again. It's really annoying, I have to find a new way to fix it every time I turn on my computer.

I have the latest drivers for the monitor and my graphics card (Nvidia geforce 8600gt).

please help, I have no idea what to do anymore...

Hello, for the past 2 days I've been trying to connect my PC to my 2 identical monitors for expanded viewing.

A little about whats the problem:
So basically both my monitors are VGA ports at the back, my computer has a DVI-I, VGA and HDMI port. I have tried connecting a VGA splitter which just mirrors the displays, so atleast we know both monitors work. I've than bought a DVI-I to VGA adapter in hope that the transition will work? Still no luck. I than tried plugging in HDMI and VGA and it works perfect aswell.

When the DVI-I port is plugged with the adapter to my monitor all that happens is, its changed from "Connect a lead" to "No signal" and the blue on light turns to a amber sleep light.

What possibly could be the problem?

The graphics card is a: ATI Radeon 4560 - I think? should be that version
If anyone could possibly help me sort the problem out, I'll happily donate via paypal for your time!

Thanks, Rhys.

Hey, my friend has asked me to post this problem for him, if anyone can answer it will be much appreciated.

I've got two computers and use 1 for games and the other for work. Im also currently running dual monitors on the gaming machine and have no monitor for the work machine. Im looking for some sort of a switch that will let me run dual monitors off both machines as well as my mouse and keyboard. Ive seen products online which do this however are all incredibly high price and none avalible on a UK site. Can anyone point me in the right direction for one of these products, im looking to spend under £50.

The main concern for the product is the monitors, im not too botherd about the mouse and keyboard sharing.

Thanks,
Lee

I have never seen a KVM switch for multiple monitors.

I would guess the best route would be to buy two of the low end single monitor switches and use them both, or one for each monitor. I think about best price you'll find is $40 each.

Or just maybe you can get something like this to work for you.

Hello, I'm running Windows 7 on a Compaq Presario CQ56.

Revently I've been having trouble with the multiple display settings changing on their own on my laptop. I've never had an external monitor hooked into my laptop, but for the past week or so my laptop will give me a notification that an external monitor has been plugged in, then it will disable though nothing has been change. I havan't downloaded anything recently besides windows updates and I have no idea what could be causing this.

Any help with this would be great; It's incredibly frustrating.

Hello & Welcome to Tech guy Forum.

Please run this forum's sys info utility & post the results.
http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Valuable_links

Which of these 17?
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfinder?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&tool=&query=Compaq+Presario+CQ56

When did the problem begin? Sometimes the exact date is important.

What changed? A hardware [ printer or other peripheral ] or software install or removal; an update to W7; update to a program [ anti malware or other program ]?
Which updates to W7 correspond to the problem onset? Look particularly for driver updates [ graphics / video or chipset in particular ].

Run HP's diags, particularly the hard disk drive.

Run Prime95 diags for the ram.

Boot to safe mode & test. It probably won't occur because in safe mode, only basic drivers are used; probably not one that enables dual monitor use.

start > search
type:msconfig.exe
Left click in the results area
the system config utility will open
Create a screen shot, using W7's snipping tool.
Return here > "go advanced" > manage attachments
browse; upload; close; submit

A screen shot of that to which you refer would be helpful.

I have an extra monitor hooked to my laptop, with XP Pro. They have been showing identical. I recently had to reinstall XP, before that I also used the TV as a third monitor, using an S cable (showing no icons), it showed as the second monitor, and both the laptop and the second monitor showed as the first monitor. (watching movies on #2, and playing games and surfing the net on the #1, with the laptop also #1 over on my desk). After reinstalling XP, I could not get the third monitor back. I was looking at my "Display Properties", and wondered what “Extend my Windows desktop into this monitor” would do. All icons disappeared on my now #2 monitor. So I unchecked that option and applied. I got a black screen. It will go back to no icons, but not back to the same as the main screen. I tried restoring to a few days ago, It did nothing. Restore even said "no changes were made". I would love to have all 3 back, but would like to at least get both of the actual screens showing icons.

Hi fuzztailed.

I know little about multiple monitors except that it requires XP Pro and I opened your post to see if you have it installed. Since you do, there is little I can do to assist you with your problem.

But I do have a question. Why is there no punctuation in your post?

I am asking because your post is hard to read without it.

You might find that some readers who would otherwise be willing to help you, just give up in frustration. When that happens, you may not have a solution.

Put another way, why make it difficult for someone to help you?

Hi I need assistance, I am currently running windows XP on a laptop with a second monitor, everything will connect and both monitors work transferring data between them, the issue is that space on my desk only allows the CRT to be on the left of the laptop. I can change settings and allow transfer from right to left and this works until I turn the computer off and then on again it reverts back to left to right setting. How can I get this to save in my profile permanently so I don't have to change this setting each time I turn the laptop on. note: I have tried with the Nividia settings and in the Windows settings accessed from desk top.

Thanks,

Try installing video drivers from manufactures web site if you haven’t already. You might want to download older drivers for your card and not the newest out there.....

I setup a workstation running Windows XP, this computer was setup with one monitor hooked up to the video card, I then put in a second monitor to go on the left of this monitor. In the display setup it showed monitor 2 as being on the left and monitor 1 on the left. I right clicked on monitor 2 and did "set as primary" the issue that I'm facing is, after a reboot, all icons are on the first monitor on the right rather than on the left. I'm not on site so I can't easily swap the cables on the video card outputs. Is there a way to make it so that the icons stay on the 2nd monitor which is also the primary monitor? I've been googling everywhere but most information I find people are suggesting using some third party software, but I'm pretty sure you can do the trick without the use of third party software.

I like leaving my 2nd monitor on for monitoring system temps and such, but some games do not lock your mouse in the main monitor, and accidental clicking on the other will minimize the game, often with disastrous results. Does anyone know of a program that will lock my mouse in one screen?

Hello hello everyone, this is my first thread here and hopefully you guys may be able to help me.
If you don't want to know the whole story just read what i wrote in red
I have recently reformatted my computer and installed a fresh new Windows 7 64 bit version.

The problem i have is that when i reinstalled and then turn my computer on, there was only one monitor detected "Display: 1. Generic Non-PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". I press the detect button and nothing happens. Now i'm not sure if this is the problem but during the installation i formatted my main partion (1tb partion) and it said drivers and what not would be wiped but i hope that isn't the reason its not working.

^ THAT SUMMED UP FOR THOSE THAT DONT WANT TO READ

Windows 7 64bit is not detecting 2nd display monitor, i'm using both VGA and HDMI screens. It doens't show me/detect the 2nd display here is a screen shot http://puu.sh/8TBy4.png THANK YOU!

Hello

I have an LG Flatron W1934S as my main monitor and am using a Philips Brilliance 190B as the secondary monitor on a graphics card with the Nvidia chipset - I have the dual display working but the secondary monitor is darker and a strange greenish, yellow colour! The monitors are both VGA cables with DVI adapters plugged in to the graphics card. The card is in a PCIEX16 slot...

I have tried playing with the settings of the Nvidia Display Control Panel.

The strange thing is I have used this monitor in Debian and Ubuntu and it is very bright and looks clear, nothing like what is displayed as a secondary monitor. It is the same in Windows 7 and Ubuntu as a secondary monitor - greenish yellow and dimmed.

I thought about maybe getting another graphics card - I could only use one with PCIEX4 though and plugging it in there?

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? The monitor works fine on it's own just when displayed as dual - my goal is to get 2 new identical monitors and a new graphics card and this was just to test what dual monitoring is like, btw I love it, just I cannot stand the dim off coloured look!

Many thanks

Nester

I have a PC which is connected to my monitor via a DVI cable and to my TV via a VGA cable. I can set it to show the same display on both or I can extend my desktop across both screens. I usually have it set to 1440x900 on my primary monitor and 1360x768 on my TV (this is what the TV suggests is optimum resolution).

This has worked perfectly for a long time up until today. I came to watch a movie on my PC using the TV as the monitor and when I turned my TV on it states that the resolution is not correct. I checked my graphics settings and sure enough the resolution is correctly set to 1360x768 as it always has been but the TV actually displays a resolution of 1280x960 (I can see this by pressing the info button on my TV remote). It seems that the TV is ignoring the graphics settings. I tried changing the resolution to 1280x768 but the TV ignores this and continues to display at 1280x960. I changed it back to 1360x768 but nothing. The only resolution I can get the TV to accept is 800x600.

I have been trying for hours to figure this out but have failed to find a resolution. Nothing has changed from last week to today yet all of a sudden I cannot get my TV to display the correct resolution. Anybody had similar problems and has a fix for the problem?

I have tried the obvious things like unplugging and replugging the VGA cable from the TV and rebooting my PC. See screenshot below which shows how my display settings are configured.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced video card that will support dual monitors. The monitors I have, have VGA connections only, but, I had a card working with both monitors (it died) using a DVI to VGA adapter on one of them.

I thought that any card that had both a VGA/DVI connector would work, and I was watching one on EBay, emailed the user to ask if it would support dual monitors and was told no
