X230 m sata upgrade and keep hdd?

Q: X230 m sata upgrade and keep hdd?

Hi everybody, I just bought my first IBM (Lenovo) Laptop and I am in love with it! I would liek to upgrade to storage asap and from what I understood, users recommend installing a M Sata SSD. Is it possible to not only install a SSD but also keep the HDD? And would this M sata ssd be compatible with the x230? https://www.kingston.com/eN/ssd/system-builder/sms200s3Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: X230 m sata upgrade and keep hdd?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, you can use SSD and HDD at the same time. Regarding mSATA SSD, many people advised to buy Samsung 850 EVO. Personally, I've tested SATA3 version and it's really good.

Hi everyone, I have a question about the RAM in the x230. I bought the base 4gb of RAM with the intention of upgrading it myself later. The stock RAM inside is a Samsung model with this serial: m471b5273dh0-cko However, I cannot find this model RAM to put in another identical stick into the open slot. The closest model available is: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MV-3T4G3/US Do you think these two sticks would be compatible? Did anyone else try a different type/model/amount of RAM? My gut feeling is that 8Gb of RAM would be great, and that 16Gb would be overkill. The other option is just to shell out a few more bucks and buy two pieces of matching RAM. I am considering Cruicals and Cosair Vengence RAM. Let me know what you guys think, Thanks, Jah

hi. if you were to order from Lenovo: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...you'd probably get Samsung, Hynix or Nanya, from my experience. most recently, i got Hynix. price may be higher than other places, though. from what i've read, Crucial is good quality, but Corsair may be hit or miss. cheers.

Hey Hi,  I am planning to upgrade my Thinkpad X230s memory to 8GB. I have few questions, it would be a great help if someone can help me.1) Is it better to use 2x4GB configuration or 1x8GB? What are the advantages? (Does Thinkpad X230 support dual channel configuration?)2) CPU-Z shows that my current RAM is running at 1.5 V. Can I put two 4GB RAM running at 1.35V? (Does Thinkpad X230 support DDR3L type memory?)3) What would happen if I use two RAM having different CAS latency? Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I am fairly new to owning a laptop (always had a desktop) and having an issue upgrading to windows 10. I have read that the x230 supports windows 10, but when I use the windows 10 upgrade assistant to try and upgrade I am greeted by a message saying the display does not support windows 10 and to contact the manufacturer. I have searched for an answer online and I suspect I am missing drivers or something along those lines? I am currently running windows 7 pro. Thanks a lot. Dan

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2½" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2½" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I have an X230 i5 processor with a 1 TB SSD and I recently picked up a X230 with a i7 processor and a much smaller hard disk.  Can I just swap my big SSD into the new X230 (moving that version of Windows 7 Pro) and then install the smaller hard disk (with its version of Windows 7 Pro) into the i5 machine. (Will be swapping the memory so the i7 has the 16 GB and the i5 has 8 GB).  I know that if they were completely different computers this would not work, but since both are X230 will it work?  I'd rather not have to restall all the programs if I can avoid it!

Recently bought a DELL XPS400 with a Seagate Barracuda 80MB SATA 7200RPM. Now realize I need more HDD size and would like to upgrade to a Western Digital 150 or 160MB SATA or Raptor. Naturally I would like keep an exact copy of my Seagate 80MB, preserving all my data, files, OS, and MBR on the new HDD. My problem is I don't know how to use copy/backup software to do that well, and I'm afraid to corrupt the new HDD (if not the old also) in the process. Further, how is that transfer/cloning/copy accomplished on the new HDD without wasting the extra gig's (I've heard that going from a small HDD to a larger one will offset the extra space so that it's wasted) since obviously I not only want to preserve all my old HDD data, OS, and MBR but want to be able to use the extra 50 or 60 gigs on the new HDD because I need that space. My OS is XP, and I have 4 SATA bays inside. Also I have an external USB 2.0 Addonics caddy which can be used with both SATA and IDE HDD's. However I have discovered I cannot boot from that caddy even though I can copy a bootable clone from USB to a internally mounted SATA HDD.

Possibly complicating my issue(s) here is that DELL partitioned the Seagate Barracuda with three partitions, Fat 16, Fat 32, and NTFS, and I don't have a clue about how to deal with that when moving the "whole thing" to the new HDD. (Looking at the various options when using backup or copy software I see such things as Drive Upgrade, Drive... Read more

Method 1: Use a usb to sata cable and a cloning program for the simplest way to migrate your OS to an SSD. (see the image below)Method 2: Remove the hard disk from the notebook. Put it and the target SSD in a desktop PC in spare available SATA ports.    Cloning programs like Samsung's Magician, Paragon's Migrate OS to SSD 4.0, and Apricot's EZ Gig IV will allow you to shrink the amount of data on the legacy hard disk to fit on the SSD. The migration is normally seamless and simple and usually finished in about thirty minutes or less. The cloning software will prep the hard drive on its own with scripted powershell commands. Connect the SSD to the sata connector and the USB end to a USB port on your notebook. Invoke the cloning program you have chosen to use.  When the cloning procedure is complete, all that you will need to do is replace the original legacy disk with the SSD. Enter the notebook's BIOS and set the SSD disk to the top of the boot list. Save the change, boot to your SSD and enjoy the performance boost. You won't believe that it is the same notebook. With some notebooks, in order to allow the SSD to boot you will have to use the UEFI boot order and move the OS Boot manager to the top of the list.   Method 3: A clean install of a Windows OS. Windows XP, Vista, 7 , 8 & 8.1 to the new SSD. This can be difficult if the OS is Windows 8 or 8.1. Newer notebooks have the license activation key in the BIOS as a SL... Read more

Just got a 240GB SSD and i'm looking to take an image of the HDD to the SSD

is there anything i need to do or is it a simple copy/migrate the OS

any free OS copy software going about for this?

think my ATI is about 4 years out of date

A:Upgrade to SSD from SATA, OS Migrate

You can use the free Macrium Reflect software to make an image of your hdd that could then be restores to the ssd. You cannot do a simple copy operation to migrate the OS.

If the hdd is larger than the ssd, you may need to repartition the hdd in order to get the partition containing the OS small enough to fit on the ssd.

Hello, I am looking to replace the original single SATA3 drive in my DV7t-7000 with 2 new drives.  I'm looking at a Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD for the boot drive and a Western Digital WD10JPLX (1 TB/7200rpm/SATA3/4096 block).  I need some advice on if these components will work with my older HP laptop.I've done some looking and I'm not certain a 1TB/7200rpm would be recognized by the system.  I've read where I might need to go with a 5400rpm drive instead (again, not sure).  I'm also concerned about the 4096 AF (Advanced Format) specs on the new drive compared to my old drive.  I've read that some of the newer drives can run in 512e (Emulation) mode to be compatible with older systems.  I've looked for SATA specs on my laptop and can't find if it would support the 4k AF format. If someone with more familiarity with drive upgrades could let me know if these drives would work for my upgrade (or suggest other specs that would be better), I would appreciate it.  I can still buy a new version of the original 1TB drive for less money, but the new WD Black drive has a 5 yr warranty vs the 2 yr on the OEM Seagate drive. Thanks in advance for any advice. Dean

Your laptop is not old enough for you to have to worry about these compatibility concerns. You can install the Samsung 850 Evo SSD as the main boot drive and the WD 1 TB 7200 rpm mechanical drive in the secondary bay with no problems.  Do you have both adapters/caddies? The drive does show in the BIOS however.

As the DVD is not show in BIOS, it is not a Windows problem.

Try this:
1) Shut down PC.
2) Physically disconnect the CD/DVD Drive.
3) Reboot to Windows with NO DVD drive.
4) Shut down PC.
5) Physically reconnect the CD/DVD Drive.

I have a question about upgrading my U410. I currently have installed the 24 gb mSATA SSD that came with the system and it is being utilized as a cache using the intel rapid storage setup and the 2.5 slot is occupied with the 1TB HDD that came with the system. I now want to purchase a Samsung 850 Evo and realize that it comes in both Sata and mSata variants. My question is on the U410 system would there be any speed benefit (assuming the same specs for the two variants of the Samsung SSD) in going with the mSata vs Sata version? Specfically, assuming all other variables equal, is the mSata pcie port slower than the Sata? And am I correct in assuming that the mSata pcie port will operate at Sata III speeds given an mSata drive that supports this output spec? And thus there is no benefit in choosing the Sata version vs the mSata? I would like to keep my 1TB HDD and install a 256gb mSata EVO drive to run the OS and main programs on, but will elect to replace the 2.5 HDD instead and get the Sata version of the EVO drive if the mSata pcie port will not equal the performance of the 2.5 Sata port. Thanks!

I?ve got a Z20t-B-10C with a 256 GB SSD Samsung MZNTE256HMHP, which is a SATA M.2 2280 module.

"was broken" by what or whom? You will not be able to fix it; that will require a new motherboard.

I would like to upgrade my factory 128GB M.2 SSD Sata 3 on my OMEN by HP 15-ax206na  as the factory M.2 Sata 3 is slower than my old laptops Samsung 850 evo Sata SSD.I believed that the M.2 format is supposed to be faster than a regular Sata SDD.I am interested in a  Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD NVMe I understand this is a different pin out configuration, the factory 128GB M.2 SSD Sata 3 being M + B and the the  Samsung 960 EVO M.2 SSD NVMe being M only or B, i'm not sure which. My question is, if this new NVMe drive does fit will i get the full NVMe speeds?and is there any other compatibility issues i should be aware of?

Hi,
Well, my Dell owners manual leaves me wondering...
about a planned upgrade to this PC.
The Dell Owners manual says that "SATA HD's" connect to the system board connectors labeled SATA-0 thru SATA 3 and CD/DVD drives to the PRI IDE connector.
My question is, can I hook up a LG GSA-H62L 18X DVD +/- RW DL SATA Drive w/LightScribe to the SATA connectors instead of the IDE connectors?
:suspiciou
I have a extra SATA power connector on the power supply cord to the single HD with just enough length to reach the upper drive bay for a workable power connector. I'll have to order a SATA signal connector cable though.

My minds eye says yepper rooney, it's a doable thingy.
Just crossin' my "T's" and dotting my "i's".
How about it guru's?

ARE Any 'MB set-up' configurations that would be needed?

Thanks....

Jeff

yes you can do that. im sure when the manual was written there was no SATA CD/DVD. you sould have no problem installing the LG GSA-H62L DVD drive

Hi guys,I just bought the T580 with their cheapest SATA HDD so that I can upgrade myself, but I realise that there's not an M.2 slot available for the upgrade drive (Samsung 960 Pro).I did a little bit of research, and I found these FRU's:01YR457    Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC) M.2 Adapter ASM for Tachi,TC-201YR466    Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC) M.2 Adapter Cable,TC-2I can't find a place where to source these. Can anybody point me in the right direction?Thank you in advance.

I have an HP DV1000 notebook with a Fujitsu 60GB IDE HDD.   I want to replace that with a WD 320GB SATA HDD.  The plastic adapter connected to the IDE drive does not connect to the SATA drive & the SATA drive does not fit the connector on the system board.  Where can I obtain the connector that will work to install a SATA drive into this system? And, in case anyone happens to know, is there anything I'll need to change in the BIOS to make the SATA drive work? Thanks.

Hello pdalton,

Your best bet for finding parts, part numbers, etc. is in your Maintenance and Service Guide.  You can order on HP Partsurfer

If I have been helpful or if you?d like to say thanks you can click the white star under my name to give me Kudos.  I really appreciate it!

Please let me know if this helps.

I ordered a customized HP Omen laptop. However, I did not add m.2 to it because I thought I could put a better one inside.During customization, I saw NVMe m.2 as an option. Does this mean HP Omen m.2 socket support NVMe? I'm looking to add either a Samsung 950 Pro Series PCIe NVMe or HyperX Predator PCIe. At the very least, I'll add a SATA m.2 to it. I know NVMe is the fastest but it is very expensive.  If you could also explain me the differences between SATA m.2, PCIe m.2 and NVMe m.2, I'd appreciate it.
