Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

Q: Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

I am going to ask a quick question while SURT is running on my laptop. I am very vulnerable on that pc as the updates have not updated since reinstall of win7 sp1 yesterday. Can I turn off my internet connection while that program is running? Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Running SURT for update problems-Compaq C62 laptop

Since no one has offered any advice, I just kept truckin'. I downloaded and I ran the SURT package. I have been at all of this since 11 this morning and succeeded in downloading 148 windows security updates. I was told after reinstalling sp1 there would be around 200 but the windows update menu indicated that 68 were "recommended" not important. That would bring the number to 196. I think I will just not worry about those 68 as they are not "important". Hope I am back in safe territory.

Please help me out - I replaced my defective HDD with a new Samsung Spinpoint HDD, re-installed my Windows 7 image using the recovery DVDs, and can't update windows at all after that. I tried following the steps from Windows Update Posting Instructions - System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and could not install that update either - got the attached message.
Thanks in advance,

Hi all-

This is my first post so hopefully I'm doing it correctly.

I've been having issues with my Windows update service not checking for updates since it says the service isn't running. I have tried various other fixes that I've seen in other threads such as running Malwarebyte and FSS. When running those tools, no issues were found.

I downloaded SURT, and while the installation will initialize, it stops and gives me a 0xc8000247 error.

I ran sfc /scannow and have attached the log file below.

I have also enclosed the CBS logs as requested.

I am running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) and have SP1 installed. Please advise if there is any additional information that you need. If it matters, the computer in question is an HP Pavilion DV8.

Thank you,

Tom

Did you not think it might have something to do with the non-genuine notification you're also almost certainly getting?

Hello, I recently replaced a defective HDD in my laptop with a new WD Black 750G HDD, re-installed my Windows 7 image using my recovery DVDs, but can't seem to update Windows OR start Windows Defender (error 0x8e5e0247). I followed the steps from "Windows Update Posting Instructions" and am listing the results:-

1. System Update Readiness Tool installation resulted in error:0xc8000247.

2. Also performed SFC Scan three separate times and received the same "WRP found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." (see attached CBS)

When I manually try to install updates, I get "Windows Update cannot check for updates because the service is not running. Restart your computer." But if look in local services (Task Manager) Windows Update is started & running.

Any help in resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
PS: There were some programs included in the restore, Norton AV being one of them. I uninstalled it, then downloaded the Norton Removal Tool & ran that as well. I'm mentioning this because it was recommended several times in other threads regarding this same error.

Please help me in solving a windows update failure. I have windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64.

The two windows updates that fail are
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821)
any Microsoft.NET framework both 4.5.2 (KB2901983) and 4.6.1 (KB3102433)

I found a similar thread and followed the steps in it, but no joy.
Performed SFC /scannow, but the WRP did not find any integrity violations. I tried to run the SURT tool (same tool as KB947821) by a manual download and run but it reports the "hotfix failed to install". So I don't have a SURT tool log to submit.

What's the next step?

Dear Sevenforums,

I just installed a new HDD by WD into a HP DV7T (2008), everything has been going well up until I tried to Update Windows. I did not retain anything from the previous installation as the previous hard drive up and quit on me!

I activated windows and had it confirmed as genuine.

I followed the instructions posted on another page and tried to install SURT and got an error: 0xc8000247.

I was hoping for some suggestions, Direct X , Java, MSE and Mechwarrior Online wouldn't install.

Perhaps a driver issue?

Have a great day all!

Sincerely,
Noodle123

This error is due to problems with the hard drive drivers.
First, open Device Manager, and click on View > Show hidden devices

Are any devices showing with yellow triangles or red crosses?
If so, Uninstall them, then reboot and see if that cures the problem.

My hard drive failed and I replaced it with a refurbished one. The CD-ROM drive had previously malfunctioned and I replaced it with a used one. I purchased Windows 7 Professional for Refurb PCs and have not been able to install it. The CD-ROM clicks a few times and tries to start up then stops. Sometimes a blinking cursor appears in the upper left screen for awhile but then changes to "Operating System not Found." I tried installation from an old Atapi external CD-ROM (formerly known to be OK) but that won't spin up either and the OSNF message appears. I have not messed with the boot order because I thought booting would be attempted from whatever device contained the Win 7 disc. Does anyone have any ideas as to whether the program disc, CD-ROM(s), replaced hard drive or something else is involved. I have about $80 invested here. Thanks for your ideas! Frank

A:Can't Load Windows 7 Prof on a Compaq laptop formerly running Vista

A number of things come to mind...
Have you at least checked the BIOS to see if the optical drive is listed first in the boot order?
You can test the Windows 7 disc on another computer to see if it boots up.  That way, you'd know for sure whether the disc boots.
Are you certain the optical drive is working?  You might want to download something like Puppy Linux and burn a disc on a known good computer then test the optical drive with it.
Let's say you get the disc or optical drive to work, do you know whether your computer is capable of running Windows 7?  Did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?

I have just installed a fresh Windows XP SP2 on my Compaq Presario Desktop.

I need to download the video drivers, sounds drivers, etc.

The video card is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 Graphics Card. The corresponding driver on the HP site is
sp26629.

The download and extraction works fine. However, it then keeps failing with the following error.

You must be logged on as an administrator to install this update. Update has been cancelled. (9999).

There have been several postings of this nature on the web.
Ok, I have logged in as administrator (yes, I do have admin privileges), my PC has no virus, I've cleaned up the registry with TweakNowRegCleaner, and my PC has no spyware.

What else can I try?

Thanks,

I've seen this problem with the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 quite a bit. There's no easy fix for it that we've found at work although we usually manage to force an install after a couple of days of trying different drivers. Maybe try the drivers from the ATI website rather than the Compaq drivers?

Hello,

Introduction:
This is an incorrect post- I don't have all the technical (necessary) information about my computer yet. That will come tonight. I am also going to post on the Viruses form, but wanted to know if anyone here could tell if I had other problems.

Computer Info:
HP Compaq, running Windows XP Home Edition, 200GB disk memory, 1GB RAM?(not sure), has always had AVG installed and running, Windows Firewall has always been on, is connected to a password-secured WiFi home network, ran Disk Cleanup about a week ago, defragmented about 3 months ago, has had a good number of programs (around 15) downloaded from the internet, tried out, and uninstalled.

Problem:
Updating Crashes Computer
A few of years ago I ran the Windows automatic update, which had been used previously with no problems, and during the course of the install the computer crashed. I had to use the restore disk to get it back in working order. This has happened two more times over the years- every time I tried to update. I don't think the computer has been updated since around 2010. This creates a security risk, right?

I have a compaq laptop 1.2 AMD/ 496 Meg of ram. If I have the 256 meg memory chip set in place, which was factory installed in the expansion slot, I have odd, unpredictable total freezing problems. When this happens, the screen, keyboard and mouse freeze, only way to fix it is turning it off. It works perfectly in every way with this memory out.

Thinking it was simply a bad stick of memory I got a replacement chip. As soon as I put the new chip in, my freezing came back.

The rest of the memory is non removable.

What should I do? This will run fine for most of my needs without the extra memory in, but it sure would be nice to have it working right.

An exeption 0E has occurred at 0028:570330C1 in VxD ---. This was called from 0028:C184A518 in VxD ---. It may be possible to continue normally.

But it never is possible to continue normally, and I'm forced to turn the computer off manually. The Device Manager shows no conflicts. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
basically I have a compaq c300
the screen was slightly damaged it had a couple of realy thin lines on the right hand side of the screen, but still worked great.
I bought the same model cheap that had a good screen on it but had mobo problems,
it also had a much nicer palm rest touch pad, so I decided to take the mobo out of my laptop and put my one into the nicer casing of the other one.
when I attached the screen back on it is showing a display like the backlight has gone, I have swapped and put the old screen back on but it still just showing a very faint image like no back light ! I have swapped the invertors around the cables around, reinstalled windows tried different ram, hard reseting the machine, stripping it back down to the mobo 3 times to make sure there is no loose connections etc, what could be causing this, I cant get neither screen to work ? some1 please help ! also the laptop works perfect when attached to my tv via vga ,
I thank you for any advice you can give me "I am soooo tired and depressed because of this now but wont give up "

I will be back on later 11 am london england time, to check if there are any replys ,
thanks alot

hi guys,

i recently discovered my firewall had been disabled and my computer was running slow. A few months ago, I had a google redirect virus that has not only returned, but has also caused my computer to load the system32 folder when i start my computer.

i also seem to have trouble installing programs like hijackthis, which i had to transfer from another computer.

thanks in advance!

oh and i'm running windows xp with at least service pack 2. i think i installed 3, but can't remember.

A:Computer problems Compaq Presario Laptop

btw, there are a noticable amount of viruses present on my computer that have replaced system files, added programs that cannot be removed from the add/remove programs list, and otherwise cannot be erased/fixed by ant-virus (avg and windows defender) or by conventional methods (trying to scan and replace system files)

this isn't really a shameless "keep me on page 1 instead of 12" bump, but i assumed this information would be more vital in having someone actually look at my HJT log, as my prior complaint hadn't garnered enough reason to justify more than one view.

thanks again

I recently bought a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop and I bought a 512 MB of RAM. The RAM I bought was PNY DDR333 Optima Memory and I checked with the manufacturer and it is completely compatible with my laptop. I tried to install the memory and when I went to boot up my computer a screen popped up saying that Windows failed to load. Is there a certain spot I need to put the new memory in because there are two slots. The original RAM is 256 MB. If anyone can help that would be awesome!!!

Hello there.
Over the past week, I have had two problems with my Compaq laptop, both screen (or resolution) related.

A few days ago, I was innocently browsing online when the resolution on my laptop became HUGE, way bigger than safe mode resolution. I have an irrational fear of large resolutions (or in this case, small), so I just shut my laptop off using the power button.

A few minutes ago, I was watching something full-screen when the screen suddenly became very light brown and unresponsive. Just like above, I shut it off with the power button.

Can someone please advise me on this? I don't have the money for a new laptop so I'd like to get this problem fixed asap.

Some basic info:
My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50-110M laptop. It runs on Windows Vista, has a 4 GHz processor and has 2GB of RAM. The graphics card is a bog-standard Nvidia graphics card usually found in laptops.

Thanks very much for your help in advance!

Im having aproblem with this laptop that My friend bought. It had windows 95 on it before and will only load to the dos c: prompt on startup. BAsed on what the bios says it has everything that Xp requires. I have a dvd/cd rw drive seperately attached to the parallel port (a floppy drive was attached to it and I got a dvd/cd rw that matched it) bc there is no drive space available for it. In bios when I try to have the boot menu it gives me 3 options--multibay 1 & 2 and HDD. I have tried to select both the 1 & 2 bays but it keeps giving me a "601--Disk Controller Failure" Thus resulting in the dvd/cd rw drive not being recognized or failing to boot from it. does anyone know how I can install XP on this machine? I have an xp cd. Does anyone think that an external cd rom throughthe usb port would work? Please help me!

Hi all. I'm new here but not what you would call new to computers. I have a Compaq Presarion laptop sitting behind me that is giving me fits! A friend of mine got it as a gift. Its got a 1.5 ghz celeron processor, 256 mb of ram, and a 40 gig hard drive.

Here's the problem. When he got it, windows was corrupted and wouldn't boot to windows without a ton of error messages. He told me to wipe the drive clean and re-install XP. He handed me a fresh, recently purchased version of Win XP home and told me to do away with HP's proprietary version of XP. I figured, easy enough. I've done this kind of thing many times with many older computers.

Well, here's the problem. It won't let me do a full format from the XP CD during the first few pages of setup. I can do a quick format of the drive and continue on. However, during setup, I get errors. I've formatted and reinstalled the OS several different times, not always getting the same error message. I completed the install once (with errors) and when I got to the desktop, there was no start button or system clock .... or even the usual recycle bin icon. Nothing was there .... I could ctrl+alt+delete to reboot, but that was the only way to shut the system down.

What is different about these compaq presario notebooks. How can you do a low level format .... or a full format for that matter. How can you get it to take a regular microsoft version of windows XP? I've already wasted countless hours fighting with this laptop.

A:Problems installing Win XP on Compaq Presario 2500 Laptop

Bump ... there appears to be no pattern to the errors I'm experiencing. Can anyone help?

Hi all, this is my first post so here goes:

I've been on the HP so called support forum and have seen many other threads complaining about the same thing as me. I've already downgraded to XP from Vista on my new laptop and only now realise that HP/compaq website have only about 4 drivers available!! I had to do this as some work apps that i use simply woulnd't run on vista. This leaves me with no graphics driver, no wireless driver to name but a few. If anyone can help me with any driver information that would be great as HP seem not to have their act together at all.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

Since a other major problem of mine was solved on this forum, I've decided to bug you guys with another problem im having. This time its about a laptop (Compaq Armada 4120, im not entirely sure of the specs, but its pretty old, probably a pentium 1, if that's even possible) and having issues playing games/running programs. For example, in order to play older games you'd have to run a programme called DOSbox, but when I try to run said programme, it says something along the lines - Error, Can't set color palette-, also when I try to play another game called Beetle Ju, it gives me the message "Failed to initialize graphic system"

Also, I've noticed that when I do the right click > properties screen, the colors are set to 256-colors without a possibilty to raise it to 16/32 bit which is usually was (if im correct) And I've always thought that it was supposed to be at least at 16-bits.

So my guess was that I had to install new video/display drivers because it could have been accidentally erased. So I did.. ( Cirrus Logic 7548 1.40M PCI (Cirrus) but when I had downloaded it, I couldnt even get the file to open or install anything, it did nothing at all.. So I probably have to put it somewhere in the Windows folder but im not that much of a computer expert to know where exactly.

And another thing worthmentioning is the fact that the upper half of the screen is filled with a barcode like pattern. I once got rid of this probl... Read more

I have an old Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that I bought years ago to help me through college. After that it kinda gathered dust a little until recently when I wanted to dig it back out and just use it to play a few games on and whathaveyou. It booted up fine when I first did it but it soon transpired that it was absolutely chocablock with viruses and spyware and it was running terribly.

So, on what now looks to have been a foolish move, I did a C: drive format in the hope of popping in a Win98SE installation disc and have it boot from that to re-install Windows.

However, now it won't boot up past the COMPAQ initial screen and a "602: Diskette Read Driver Error" or something keeps flashing up.

Is there any way to get into the BIOS settings to set the CD Drive as the first in the boot-up line-up, or are there recovery discs I can download that'll at least get me into DOS?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Compaq Armada 3500 Laptop Won't Boot Up Past Compaq Screen...

Well you should be able to access the CMOS Bios by using either the delete, F1 or F2 keys (sometimes f10). Then under the Bios you should see the Boot Sequence and be able to change it from there. But either way, you should be able to get past the Compaq splash screen. Try setting your boot sequence and see if that helps.

Windows Update spins forever on "checking for updatse". The Win Update Troubleshooter gives error 0x8024402C. I have tried numerous fixes including some KBs - no success.

Today I tried steps 1 and 2 that you recommend should be run before posting on this problem.

1. The SURT installer has been spinning > 3 hrs on "searching for updates on this computer".

2. I ran "sfc /scannow". It says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" and refers to CBS.log - but that is an empty file.

Can anyone advise me?

I am probably way off base asking this here but i have a older 2007 Sony VAIO laptop that works just fine and would like to keep it safe, which I cant do running Vista as it is no longer supported.  I believe the machine has the required hardware
processor a 1.67 Ghz and 2GB of RAM.  I apparently missed the free upgrade to windows 10 but i was reading somewhere that you couldn't  upgrade from Vista to windows 10.   Yes I have other newer laptops so its not like I need to go out and get
a new computer but it seems a shame to ditch a perfectly working laptop [albeit it  is a tad heavy] because its  OS is  no longer supported.

Any hints on how i might update the OS to windows 10 or do i take this as an opportunity to learn how a linux system works and just use another OS entirely.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my Acer Aspire V5-571 laptop from 8.1 to 10 yesterday.

For the most part things seem OK, but there are a couple of issues I hope someone could advise me on.

First off, the laptop seems to be running hotter (and therefore louder fans) since the update. My temps seem to be in the 60s a lot, rather than the 40s-50s before, under normal load.

Also, log in seems to take ages. On 8.1 I'd enter my password and it'd be at the Start Screen a few seconds later. When entering my password now, first it stays on the login screen for a while, and even then when it gets to the desktop, the wallpaper shows but no desktop icons, and the taskbar shows but as a blank bar. Then the items on it (start button, icons etc) start appearing slowly.

It's not my startup entries because I have hardly any.

Any ideas on these issues?

Thanks for any advice

A:Laptop seems to be running hotter since update from 8.1 & long login

Hello,

This could be a driver problem and one of the MB or system component drivers needs an update for W10. It would be worth checking the Acer website for any W10 driver updates they recommend for your laptop.

Something is using more CPU time that it should be. It would be worth looking at Task Manager to see what is causing your CPU to run a lot.

My experience is that there are more background tasks running in W10 than in W8 and this can depend on what you have set up such as Cortana, windows indexing, etc. There are a few threads on here related to reducing the number of running processes in W10 that would be worth looking up.

This tutorial would be a good start: Optimize Performance of Windows 10

I have a handful of fairly serious problems so please bare with me!
I am running windows 7 and recently suffered the "setting up personalized settings" failure where my computer would only load this page andnothing else.  At first I believed this to be a virus (where as I now believe it to be a windows update, as it happened to my partners computer and was quickly resolved with another update), and was desperate to clear it so blitzed it with antivirus scans (malware bytes, spyware s&d) and attempts to clear it.  Eventually, the problem ended HOWEVER my desktop now loads as normal but is cripplingly slow (it takes roughly 7 hours for me to do something that would usually take 15 minutes), and now am also unnable to load safe mode due to a crash on loading CLASSPNP.SYS.  I believe im my haste to fix it i have deleted some key system file.  I have attempted to run /SCANNOW in the command pannel to check and fix for errors however have only got this to run once and took roughly 24 hours to get to 37% where it crashed.  In desperation i tried to install ubuntu but encountered an error in installation.  Sometimes when shutting down i get an error about windows not being able to run command prompt as i am running too many 32 bit programs.  On top of this, my laptops fan doesnt seem to be running!
Please advise me as to what i should do, re-install windows? press on with ubuntu? throw the laptop in the bin?! thanks

A:Serious problems after update - incredibly slow running, did i delete something?

Try this:  http://www.maximumpc.com/how-to-repair-a-faulty-windows-installation-without-reformatting/
If it doesn't work, then you may be looking at a reinstall of Windows (backup the system first).

If the fan isn't running, that could be causing a lot of problems (due to overheating).
I'd suggest starting with some free bootable diagnostics (outside of Windows):  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

Hello everyone,

Please bear with me here as I attempt to explain all of the issues I'm having with my computer right now. I'll try to explain everything as throroughly as possible, but if you need more information and/or log files to provide a more accurate solution, just let me know.

For starters, I am running an HP Pavilion dv6000 series (dv6748us to be exact) with Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) installed. (Service pack 2.) About 6 months ago, I recovered this laptop from what I believe was the conflicker virus (kept redirecting pages, stopped updates and antivirus programs, etc.) and I managed to get Windows Update up and running again. My Help and Support wasn't working though, it was only working in Safe Mode, so I did some research and tried a bunch of suggested fixes (updating the registry, etc) and got that to work again as well. I am not sure if one of the diagnostic tools that I used while fixing Help & Support might have caused the problems I am having now (as I literally tried everything under the sun until I got it to work), but my Windows Update is not functioning correctly again, amongst other things.

A couple of weeks ago, I installed some updates and restarted the computer, but the updates didn't finish installing during reboot. It said the usual "Configuring Updates, do not turn off your computer," but never showed percentage complete or anything. It restarted, and when I opened Windows Update, it said the last time I checked for u... Read more

A:Problems with Windows Update, running sfc /scannow, and booting in safe mode.

It could be a hard drive problem but you definitely have some corruption. Check Disk - chkdsk

If that doesn't work I would do a repair install. I think that you have exhausted everything else. Repair Install For Vista

As for the restore points it is a good idea to purge them after a virus since it could have infected a restore point.
