Running out of hard drive space. Need info on how to clear up much needed space.

Q: Running out of hard drive space. Need info on how to clear up much needed space.

I have an HP Envy 17 notebook. My notebook has 2 hard drive slots. It came with 2 500 GB HDD's. I decided to re vamp my laptop when I got it new. I put in a 40 GB SSD as my main drive. Desiganted as the C: Drive. I didnt have money for anything larger and I had my mind set on having a fast SSD instead of a normal HDD. I also put in a 320 GB Hard drive as the secondary drive. Its my E: Drive.

I also put in 8GB of Random Access memory. It came with 4GB. I then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate to my 40 GB SSD. I had about 7 GB left after installing. I just wanted a fast boot up. And I wanted Windows to run fast and smoothly.

Awhile later My SSD started having space disappear for no reason. I wasn't installing anything new on the drive, nor was I saving anything extra to it either. The extra 7 GB dwindled down to about 200 MB. Now my notebook is always running on low disk space. I have tried removing unwanted programs. I also tried clearing out cookies, history and my cache. Even tried removing system restore and shadow copies. And also tried the windows disk cleanup utility.

Does anyone know why my SSD started to have space magically vanish? I would like the space back. And can anyone give me any other ideas on how to free space on the drive? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Running out of hard drive space. Need info on how to clear up much needed space.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Running out of hard drive space. Need info on how to clear up much needed space.

Probably windows updates that have been downloaded. 40GB is pretty small for Windows 7. You could running through the disk cleanup utility located in START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS

Hello,

I have recently acquired an ACS 200 Adaptec hard drive, used from a friend. The HD has a total of 74.5 gigs. I deleted all my buddy's files, vids and songs but it will not let me completely delete the file WINDOWS. It says it only has 404mb yet the HD shows there's only 39 gigs of available room left. Eh? So when I try to delete the WINDOWS file, nothing happens. When I tried to move it to desktop to throw it in the bin, it got about halfway before a message reads: cannot copy sxs access denied.

If there's a way to master clear the whole thing that would be great. My friend tells me the HD is meant for internal use but got the outer casing for it and I have it hooked up thru usb. Any help or a link to somewhere where I could find out about this product (which I can find almost nothing on) would be greatly rewarded with gold....or not but still I'd thank you.

Client brings in an HP 13 c020na netbook with approx 30gb drive in it with Win 8.1

He needs to install a program that needs 4.5gb space on the C drive (approx 21Gb)

I can only get to 3.5gb free space on the main partition

There is a 7.5gb Recovery partition - so my idea was to remove a folder with the .wim files in and then move the partition to make more space on the C drive

Did that, but the OS would not boot - replaced the .wim files - all OK

So how come the OS relies on the recovery sector to boot ?

And is there another way around this ??

A:More Space needed on Hard Drive

Have you checked to see if you can reduce the space allocated to system restore?

Client is nuts for installing Windows 8.1 on a 30GB drive (my opinion!).

Also, use cleanmgr to delete unnecessary files.

How do I put the hard drive space used and free space on the Partition C: ? Partition D:\ and Partition E:\ has it but for some reason drive C:\ is missing it doesn't say how much space is used and how much space is free. The GBs are missing

A:How to bring back the amount of free space and used space on a hard drive

I'm a little confused about your question

You can't see how much drive space you have left when viewing your C drive via My Computer, or similar?

If you right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the new window pops up click on Disk Management from the left hand side. What does that tell you about C drive? Assuming your C drive is actually a hard drive (and not a CD drive or something, though I have never heard of this happening and don't even know if it's possible to have C as your CD drive), you should see details at the top of the screen such as how much space you have left, by percentage of total capacity, as well as GB

Verify that there is enough space on C:
Create a Install directory on remote server
Then copy the file from my computer remote server.

Can anybody please help me!!!

I found this code on "SpiceWorks.com'.

I have not tested. I have not test (just to be clear). It's set up to determine % of free space (on a text file listing of servers) but could be modified to do what you want.

My computer is running very slow. I don't really have a lot of programs installed and can't figure out why I am getting this message. I was running a ghost program and am wondering if this could be a problem. I also find that when I run my Norton anti-virus, I seem to have many more files than expected. Is their any way that I can resolve this problem or find out what is typing up a lot of space without looking at the add/remove programs. Hey guys,
I'm having a big problem with my hard drive space. First of all it keeps decreasing for no apparent reason when i am connected to the internet even though i'm not downloading anything. And i'm not talking about mb but GB!! My first guess was a vius so i ran my antivirus (avast) and removed some issues, but the trouble continues... I installed the WinDirStas as i saw in other posts to find if i missed something. And to my surprise i discovered that my HD is occupied by ~80GB of unaccessible files! I'm not sure i am saying that correctly so see for yourselves...

A:Hard drive space decreasing and showing less space available

I think you should read as 8 point 8... but you do need more overhead for Windows. Look at your pagefile settings in System and maybe have a look at what Windows Indexing settings are...

This is probably a real basic question. I want to make an image of my hard drive using Macrium Free. The MBR is 100 MB and the primary drive is 471 GB. Do I need at least 471.1 GB of free space on the external drive for the image or does the imaging software compress the size so that a lesser amount of space is needed?

A:How much space is needed to make an image on an external hard drive

It will apx. 60% of the SPACE USED, not the total size of the partition.

i.e. If you USE 100 GB of the 471 GB, the image will be apx. 60 GB

Hi, my drive is divided in two -- C and D drives. The C drive is where the computer's basic systems run; the D drive is just for files and for non-essential programs I've installed. The problem is that the C drive is running out of memory: about 170 MB right now. It used to be about 3 GBs. I don't know what's been filling it up, but I assume it is because of updates to windows and also to Firefox (which is installed on the C drive). I've removed as many programs as I can from it but the memory keeps dropping.

I was hoping that I could get some advice about how to resolve this problem. I can imagine two solutions: (a) remove the wall between the C and D drives or (b) learn what has filled up the C drive and how to remove/resolve. I don't know how to do either.

About my computer:
Dell Latitude D505
Win XP
Service Packs: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 AND Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 (also Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SPI)
Thank you very much.

I want to transfer everything from the original HD
(HDT 722525DLA 380 ATA)
to the new one
(SAMSUNG HD 204UI ATA ((F4EG Spinpoint)) ).

I am trying to do this with DriveImage XML. This free program asks me to give sizes of partitions for the new HD before it can continue. I don't know what sizes to key in.

The original HD's capacity seems to be: Partition C - 206 GB/Recovery 26.8 GB (although I think I noticed that 500 GB was printed on the HD's top cover).

The new HD has a capacity of 2 TB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am no spring chicken & have only been using this technology since August. Many thanks.

This is your network/subnet space. I'm not sure if they're asking for your internal LAN address or if you have public IPs from your ISP which they need that information.

MPLS Router LAN IP
I assume you're not the network admin for your company. Otherwise you'll know this information or know if you're even using MPLS.

DHCP
Don't understand why they're asking for this information unless they want to know if you already have a DHCP server which can issue IP addresses to VoIP phones.

RO SNMP Community String
I also don't understand why they're asking you for this information. This info is for setting up network management reporting. They want to know what community string you are using to validate SNMP queries to a device being monitored. The RO stands for read only. Which means the device is set up to only provide polling information to an NMS server and will not allow writes/changes to the device. Maybe they're asking this because they think you'll want their phone system to be monitored by any NMS server you have running.

SNMP ACL
Same as above.

On one system I am getting this error message once every day or two. The hard drive has over 300GB available. The verbatim error message shows nothing in Google.

It reads:
"The space on the hard drive is running low. Currently only xMB is free. Please free space by deleting unused files."

Now it shows 71MB free. Any thoughts?

A:Error Message "The space on the hard drive is running low" isn't true

so do you have 300 gb? or only 71 mb? because if its 71 mb, u have got some major cleaning to do. I doubt that though, some viruses clutter the hard drive. If you have plenty of room, and your still getting the message then you can follow these instructions to remove the annoying message.

Setting up a new box, Vista sadly to say. Installed MS Office XP Pro and get the following error when closing MS Word ONLY. Excel saves without any errors.

The disk is full. Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk. Try one of the following:
*Close any unneeded documents, programs, and windows.
*Save the document on another disk.

I've moved the file location and same error. I cleaned up the drive including removing all restore point except the last one.

Now this thing has a 250 gig drive but it is also used for security in a mini mart with 8 cameras. There are about 145 Gigs of video from the security cameras on this box. At this time I am just setting it up, no cameras are connected, and the security program hasn't been set up yet. I just moved the files from the old drive to this one. BTW the old drive crashed.

I've tried the detect and repair in MS Word and no help. I have uninstalled MS Office and reinstalled and no help and even went into Properties and set the user up on quota with no limits and still no help.

So now I am at a loss and have no idea what to try next. Really don't want to delete the security files because it took 6 hours to transfer them to this computer and unless all else fails this isn't a option I want to use.

Now on the old box, which had XP Pro this, was not a problem so on Vista it should not be either but then Vista is a MS Software so this is understandable. Actually, the old box had a 15... Read more

I think you need to allocate the free space as a linux swap partition and format it as such.

Within the last month I began seeing this message. I ran Disk Cleanup, and even uninstalled some little used programs, but I kept running low. For years I've kept a compact system volume of about 28GB in the logical 30GB C partition. All User info is on other drives. I've never run short of space before, but just to give me some room, I used Mini Partition Tool to add an additional 5GB to the C partition. This "filled up" within a week without me adding any programs, and now I'm getting the message again. I've tried Disk Cleanup, CCleaner, etc, with no improvement. This is my current status:

I'm at a loss with this because WinDirStat shows what has always been the historic size of my Boot Disk, but the others do not. Can someone help me solve this dilemma? Thanks

A:Running Low On Drive C Space

I noticed that TreeSize showed a 10GB folder called System Volume Information, which was not identified by WinDirStat. On Googling it, I found that it contained restore points. A thread in Tom's Hardware showed how to reduce its size in Advanced System settings. I reduced it to 2GB and now have plenty of C drive space. I manually back up the Boot drive weekly using Macrium Reflect, so I shouldn't need many restore points. TreeSize proved to be more useful than WinDirStat in this case. I'll leave this thread open for a few days to allow other responses, and to see what happens.

Hi b8caster ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the Machine Number from the label sticker or check it from here.
We would be able to check for the storage capacity as it was purchased with otherwise to check it directly from the pc.

Try to open disc management tool to check on how the storage is partitioned to compare it to the actual harddrive capacity.

Update us how it is on your pc.

Hello!

Recently I keep getting a msg warning me that I?m running out of space on D drive. I clean it up as suggested but it's not having any effect.
The MS forum moderator suggests it's a not an operating system issue but an issue for Toshiba.

It appears that files are being saved to D drive which shouldn't be happening...?

A:Running out of disk space on D drive

Sorry for this question but what is MSG warning?
And what was the argument why it should be Toshiba issue?

Is this info from operating system itself or given by some Toshiba tool like Tempro?

Hi there,

Sorry if I've misposted this but not sure what category this falls in.

I bought an ASUS S56 laptop 6 months back or so that had a hybrid 24 GB SSD and 700 GB HDD. I tried the Windows 8 (which came preinstalled) but I wasn't ready for the change yet so I made the needed BIOS/UEFI changes and installed Windows 7 on the small 24 GB SSD (C:\).

I've setup the defaults so that all new programs and documents are saved on the HDD (E:\) as to keep space available for the OS on the SSD. Now 6 months later my OS is seeming to grow and I'm running out of space on the SSD. I've already disabled hybrid sleep and a few other features in order to minimize the space the OS takes up but I can't seem to stop it from growing.

I'm wondering if there are any additional ways to reduce the space my OS is taking? Is there any files in the C:\Windows that can be deleted? Or is my only true solution to replace the hybrid SSD/HDD with a full size SSD?

Thanks for the help.

A:Running Out of OS Drive Space, Possible Solutions...

You can lower the size of your page file, delete restore points except the most recent one, but in the end, I would go for a larger SSD.

I continue to get the messages about the Recovery Drive D being low on space. We do NOT use D for storing files other than those automatically placed there for recovery purposes.  The D partition was created (by HP assuming) with 25.6 GB and currently has less than 1.5 GB of free space.  Of the folders on this partition 21.3 GB are used by "preload".  I have tried everything I can find on the HP Support Forums as well as from the Microsoft Support Forums. NONE of it helps as I'm still not able to update to the latest "Anniversary Edition" for widows 10 (currently running Windows 10) as we get the error message about running low on space. And yes, I have turned System Protection off for this partition, I have deleted all files that show when run file cleanup, I have tried it all.. but to no avail.. The folders on this partition are those that I have seen listed as "DO NOT DELETE". What needs to be done to allow Windows 10 to complete an update without running out of space on the recovery (D) partition?

My bosses computer has a very strange folder structure on his c: drive
He's down to his last gig of space but I cant tell what is occupying all of it. He doesn't have lots of pictures on his desktop or the normal libraries/picture folder locations nor video and music files. He runs his computer mainly for vector cutting products.

Running windirstat revealed the following:
pic1
pic2

his C drive has 100's of folders with strange and odd names in the root. we run kaspersky religiously and have not encountered a virus recently. I don't know if he downloaded something through his email. Can I start removing files indicated by windirstat? If so which ones, I don't want to delete something important but at the same time I'd like to figure out what's creating and taking up all this space.

any help would be appreciated.
windows7 home premium 32bit

A:windirstat running out of space C: drive

Most of the files are located in the Curtis sub directory, which is under Users. It's showing over 30 GB, so you need to get rid of some of those files if possible.

An alternative would be to install another hard drive or use a USB hard drive & copy a lot of those files that are not required very often, onto it.

Is the computer shown in your System Specs the one you are asking about or is the problem computer a different one. If it's different could you provide some specs on it.

Hello, I'm trying to help a friend whose notebook was infected with malware. She tried to clean it herself and the result is that Windows XP Pro sees the (C Drive as "Used space 0 bytes, empty space 0 bytes, capacity 0 bytes". Disk management sees Drive (C as "66.34 GB NTFS healthy system with 92% empty space" Disk management also sees "HP_Recovery (D 7.18 GB with 2% empty space" and "Unknown Partition 1.00 GB healthy with 14% empty space"

Because Windows XP thinks the disk has zero bytes of capacity and zero bytes of empty space, I am unable to download or install any diagnostic or anti malware utilities. I ran Avira Antivir Rescue System from the CD Drive and it found "TR/Drop.Agent.ahdz" Trojan in several files and it renamed the files. After the Antivir scan windows began to display the following message during startup "Windows is unable to open the following folder, folder: rncsys32.exe.XXX".

The PC boots and runs normal. The only problem is that the OS thinks the Hard Disk Drive is full.

Is there a way to make windows recognize that Drive (C does not have zero bytes of capacity and zero bytes of empty space? Also would deleting the Drive C: partition and restoring the system work in this case, or should I save some time and just install a new hard drive?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

A:Can I Take Space From Recovery Partition for More Space in (C:) Drive?

As a general rule, if you already ran off the manufacturer recovery discs, you can then delete the recovery partition, create another in the unallocated space and use it to store your data.

You probably won't be bsle to do it with windows tools.

This free program should do the job:

Hello,

I have just restored my laptop to factory default, and I am preparing to make a back up image on a flash drive. I know it varies from machine to machine, but will an 8gb flash be good enough?

I imagine the flash drive should be wiped clean, and only the image stored on it correct? How do I go about doing this?

Thank you

A:Creating back up Image, flash drive space needed?

Yes, on a factory default machine a 8GB should be fine. Unfortunately, as you said it varies per machine so only creating one will provide a definitive answer.
