Had to pull power, now PC is so slow it's unusable

Q: Had to pull power, now PC is so slow it's unusable

I have a Dell Dimension 8400...it has some age on it, but I replaced the hard drive and reinstalled XP about a year ago, (with the help of this forum) and it's been just fine ever since. I have a MyBook connected, pretty much all the time. Tonight I had downloaded some pics off of my camera, and noticed that the MyBook was making an weird clicking noise - like it was trying to come up and couldn't, so I hit the power button on it. Immediately, my pc started spinning up (the hard drive is what it sounded like) louder and louder, incredibly fast, like it was about to fly right out of the case, or explode, and I freaked out and pulled the power plug.

I rebooted, and it came up, slowly...and now it seems to be running at about a tiny fraction of the speed that it normally does. I don't hear the hard drive at ALL now, and I used to. I did run the Seagate diags on my UBCD, and it said the hard drive was fine - no errors at all. I'm not sure what else to run. As far as the MyBook, I can't get it to even show up on the drive listings...it won't even spin up. If my backups there are gone, I'm just gonna cry. I have some pictures there that I'll never get back if they are gone. I never thought I needed a backup for my backups. I can get to everything on my drive...it's just slow.

Okay...now...it seems like once the pc gets "warmed up", it is running okay. The pc still will not recognize the MyBook though. I'm going to go ahead and post this, and then I'm going to reboot again, and see how it comes up this time. I'll post back afterwards if it isn't too long...otherwise, I'll post back tomorrow.
And by the way....what the heck do you do with an external drive that won't respond?

Preferred Solution: Had to pull power, now PC is so slow it's unusable

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Had to pull power, now PC is so slow it's unusable

This is SO weird. I let the MyBook just sit there, and FINALLY, it started spinning up, this is after about 10 minutes! And now it's showing up as a drive, and everything is there. And my PC booted up MUCH faster this time...as it normally does...so somehow, everything seems to have corrected itself. I have never seen this happen before. Any ideas?

So for the past couple months any time i turn off my computer, to be able to turn it back on i need to pull the power cord first till the board light goes off then plug it back in and it boots fine. if i don't then i get no responce from the computer at all when i hit the power button

A:PC won't boot unless i pull the power cord for a few seconds first

I'd say it was a motherboard fault. If so, you'll have to replace it.

I would really appreciate some help. My system is becoming slow and unusable as my subject line says. I am going to cc my HiJackThis log below.

I have to reboot the system at least once a day and with each mouse click the processes max out at 100% and I have to wait a long time before the system will allow me to complete even the smallest task.

I have tried to run a malware detector and it runs for a while and then just stops. I have tried several malware programs.

I think you will be able to see from the logs, but it's an XP SP 3 machine, running Norton Anti-Virus and I run Ad Aware every once in a while. I would like to get rid of a lot the crap in the registry and startup that this system does not need. I hope, with your help, I can get this system fixed so I do not have to go back to bare metal and start over.

Thanks in advance for looking at my log.

REVISED HIJACK THIS LOG ATTACHED

I need to update my original post.

After I posted this, I spent a little bit of time looking at my system and went ahead and removed a few items and it seems to have improved some. Thing things I did included cleaning out the temp files and removing MusicMatch and some of the Dell "Ex[erience" programs that I never use.

I also removed all of my virus, checking, malware checking and am waiting for advice from this forum as to what I should be using.

I used to run Norton ANtiVirus, but noticed when I would update the definitions that I did not think the update was completing, so I removed Norton and installed the free Microsoft Security Essentials and it found 3 or 4 viruses, so I removed them. I did a quick Scan first and then a full scan overnight. The overnight scan found a few more viruses and removed them.

Any suggestions as to which one of the FREE anti-virus programs I should use?

And should I run AdAware and other spyware and malware detectors?

I apoligize for not taking the above mentioned steps prior to my original post.

My computer has suddenly gone from running fine to running so slowly it is unusable. I suspect that I'm infected with something but I haven't had any luck trying to find out what it is.

I can boot to Safe Mode and the machine runs fine. From there I ran ComboFix a couple times but that didn't help. I can post the log file if needed.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott (not)

A:Computer so slow it is unusable

Updates on this:
I downloaded and ran MalwareBytes (in SafeMode) but it came back clean.

I now have the machine up and running in normal mode but it is still extremely slow. When I try to open any application from the Start menu, it doesn't load at all. I am however able to run Task Manager and I can see all the processes that are running. I've sorted the list by Memory Usage and run some searches on the processes that are using the most but nothing has turned out to be a virus.

I suspected that my problem was with Comodo, but I was able to shut that down and the problem persists. However I have noticed that cmdagent.exe is still running.

Any suggestions?

A:New notebook so slow it's unusable

It is not real popular here but I try to speak the truth. Here are the specs of your laptop: specs Let's break this down.  Intel® Celeron® N3060 (1.6 GHz, up to 2.48 GHz, 2 MB cache, 2 cores)  These are benchmarks showing your processor's performance as against a low-end i3 from 3 generations back...about the least powerful thing I would recommend someone buy. As you can see your processor is about maybe 55-60% as fast as the slowest thing needed to run Windows 10 very well.  Memory, standard4 GB DDR3L-1600 SDRAM (1 x 4 GB) 4 gigs of RAM is just barely enough Hard drive1 TB 5400 rpm SATA This is a slow hard drive...about the slowest type of storage offered on curent computers.  So you have a perfect storm of sub-par hardware cobbled together to offer a cheap laptop. From the outside it is shiny and new, but on the inside it's all struggling to keep up with the demands of current computing.  What can you do? We can speak of upgrades but those are costly and not easy to do. We can turn off all the visual effects in Windows to keep the OS from consuming processor cycles and we can turn off all stuff that runs automatically in the background, although you say there aren't any of those I bet we can find some processes that can be turned off.  Bottom line, if you still have the right to return it, do so and add some more money in to purchase a laptop with at least an Intel Core i3 processor and 8... I have not installed any thing new recently and cannot understand why the drive is always being accessed and the computer so slow. when i booted into the recovery console the hard drive was not being accessed all the time (drive light went out) but when windows tries t load te drive light is always on. even in safe mode. Problem: Win 7 began crashing and now takes an hour to boot. Upon booting system is so slow it's unusable. The disk light on the laptop is constantly working.

Specs: Win 7 Home Premium. HP Pavilion G7 1219WM laptop. Slow 1.6mhz processor but this is even more ridiculous than usual.

Tried: Basically all F8 options. Repair, last known good configuration, system restore to weeks prior. AVG scan is clean. MalwareBytes deleted a few keys and a file. Trendmicro scan is clean. Tried a Windows update but the boot issue seems to keep it from properly configuring. Chkdsk yielded nothing. I can't seem to /scannow my C drive, says I have an update pending.

I can boot to safe mode, despite a very long boot. Windows does function in that environment. My disk light does not constantly flash when in safe mode.

Shutting down results in a blue screen message saying preparing to configure Windows. So not only is there an issue with booting, it seems to stuck in some sort of failed update loop.

Any ideas?

A:Win 7 slow to boot and unusable

I have seen very slow boot and use performance when a drive is going bad.

Are you letting the computer finish its update cycle on shutdown? It may take a long time, but that might allow you to run sfc/scannow without a problem.

Please fill out your system specs so that we can give more detailed help.

What is the brand and model of the drive? If it's a Seagate, you can use something like SeaTools to scan the drive for problems. It's much more thorough than Chkdsk. Western Digital has a similar utility.

Hey,

My laptop went super slow and it takes over 10min for the laptop to switch on and ages to do anything. Somebody suggested it could be something with BBC iPlayer (Kservice component working in the background) but I have had this for months and all worked fine. When I stop the KService process, the laptop works a little faster but still not back to normal.

I am running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3. I have run Spybot to remove malware and it found nothing. AVG hasn't found anything either.

I am it my wits end and have no idea what to do. I will really appreciate some help. Thanks, Lili

How can I download updates at an acceptable speed?
I have Vista Home Premium 64bit active.  It has been updated over the years without much fuss.  Recently (October 2016) updates have begun to download so slowly that even when the machine is left on for days the updates have not been downloaded
and applied.  This is not to do with my internet connection itself; it works for all other applications.
The symptoms are:
Control panel>Windows Update screen shows 'Downloading updates'.  The moving 'download bar' continually cycles but beneath it it always says "0KB total, 0% complete".   This never status changes.  However, since updates do sometimes
get loaded, this information appears to be incorrect anyway.

I have a Flex 3-1130 (model 80LY) with 4GB ram running Windows 10 x64.  The systems is so slow as to be unusuable. Incredibly frustrating.  I've spent the last few days fiddling with windows settings, upgrading drivers, bios etc but haven't made any real progress.  So here's what I think might be going on.  I'm hoping someone else has encountered this issue and can point me in a usefule direction :-) As reported by task manager, the CPU usage is nearly always pegged to 100% and often the disk usuage is nearly 100% as well.  In addition, the memory available to the system is reported to be ~2.1GB.  I believe the issue is that the Intel onboard graphics allocates 1.9GB of the 4GB ram.  The Intel graphics utility does not seem to allow me to reduce the RAM allocated to graphics or to reduce the bit-depth of the display (which is pegged to 32 bits).  Has anyone figured out how to address this issue?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Arnold

Windows update is extremely slow. Windows Update IS downloading updates but the download speed is so very slow - about 10 - 15 kbps - that Windows Update is essentially unusable. I tested my download speed against other sites, for example updating Malwarebytes database & that download speed was 760 kbps (as measured using NetWork 'Speed Meter' utility). I tried rebooting but this did not work. What could possibly be wrong? I have scanned my laptop with Avast, Malwarebytes, etc & nothing was found. I ran sfc /scannow and nothing was found I have had this type of problem before and rebooting solved the problem. Not this time. Any suggestions?

A:Windows Update is so slow it is unusable - How to fix?

It could be due to a server overload. Try to download the updates during odd hours. Maybe the servers are less laoded.

It could also be your AV program or the firewall making extensive checks. For a test, take those down during the updates. That is an iffy operation so you really do not want to do that all the time. But at least you could determine whether that is the cause.

every click on the mouse take a long time to respond and sometimes causing the apps to freeze.

system restore to earlier point fail and chkdsk isnt working - something about other program using the c: drive.

i dont know if its a windows failure that formatting will fix or hardware failure (hdd, MotherBoard, CPU).

any suggestion ?

thanx

A:Pc is very slow and unusable after electricity failure.

To find this out I would boot a boot CD of any kind to see if it functions correctly. Then you'll know its either your hard drive or the OS itself that needs replacement or repair/reinstall.

If you boot into a Boot CD like Hirens of UBCD you can test your hard drive, RAM and rescue your files. All of this activity will demonstrate if the boot CD functions normally which would indicate the mobo is still good. If so then it after testing your hardware from the boot CD if it proves OK I would move to the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

If you'll report back as you go there may be other repairs indicated.

I have one office PC and one office Laptop.  Both were upgraded to Windows 10.  The slowing of the computers were not immediate but over the past 3 months the have gotten bogged down with windows services.  My CPU is always running +50%, my memory ranges from 60-80% and it takes forever to load web browsers and any programs - especially on the laptop.  I've run MSservice diagnostics, downloaded Malwarebytes, have Norton360, ran a few external scans all to no avail.  I'm not the worst with computers but apparently not the best - I can't figure this one out.  I'm to the point where I'm wondering if my computers are just not capable of running Windows 10.

I can't get to the WIndows Update so I have no idea if there's some sort of critical update I need. How can I get this stupid computer working again? Hello -

First: equipment details.

HP Pavilion a1240n. Pentium 4 @ 3 GHz, hyperthreaded, 2 GB RAM, 180 GB disk. NVidia 6200 video interface. During one update cycle, Microsoft installed a video interface driver. No problems with the video.

Windows XP SP3 plus all patches from Microsoft (I had it visiting the update side at least once a week).

Other than updates, no recent hardware or software additions.

Problem:

This thing has gone from lightning fast (for my usage anyway) to dead slow/slower than dead.

Booting the computer... the "Welcome" screen appears. Then the hard disk access light goes SOLID on. No head movements, no whickering about. Just solid on.

The system is unresponsive to keyboard or mouse for easily five minutes. Even after that, the drive light is ON and response stutters terribly.

The system acts the same way in Safe Mode. However, response improves after a minute or so. But it's STILL far slower than I'd ever seen.

-----

I thought the computer was infected with something. Dropped a note into the Malware forum where Orange Blossom and Tomk_ guided me through a scan of the system.

GMER running in normal boot would blue-screen crash right down to the BIOS in anywhere from 1 to maybe 30 minutes into the run (listening to the hard drive spin down like that can be a traumatic experience: blue flash on the displays, fast head retract and drive braking noises, fans in the box spinning down then zip into high speed).

A few days ago, I check my bank account, go to work, come home and I try to load up firefox and it won't connect to the internet at all. I check my firewall (EZtrust Firewall) to see if it's blocking firefox and that doesn't seem to be it...but I lowered the defense setting from high to medium and suddenly it connects again...but now, it runs at an unbearably slow speed and is basically unusable. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it doesn't seem to do any good and whenever I do reinstall all my old settings are there as if I never deleted it. I've run like 3 different virus/ad-ware/malware scanners and that didn't do any good either. I followed the 5 steps as best as I could

Here are my results:

Step 1:

Removed view point manager.

Step 2: I can't get that free panda scan to load up for me. I go to the page and click "scan now" but nothing happens. I turned off the popup blocker but it didn't work. I even turned off my antivirus and firewall, but still, nothing happens.

Step 3: Successfully installed defensive programmes.

I enabled BitLocker last night. The computer understandably went incredibly slowly because of the heavy disk utilization while it was encrypting my drives. I let it run overnight, but this morning it still hadn't completed my boot SSD (120GB). My SSHD data drive (1TB) completed just fine. The SSD was at 85.4% complete at 10am, and at 1pm that had gone to 85.6%.

The computer is so slow as to be unusable. I managed to get a program installed (took an hour and a half) to check the SSD, it reported no problems. Windows system log shows no errors other than a TON of services that won't start. Task Manager shows no heavy use of any resource.

What could be the problem? Why is it taking so long to encrypt my SSD, and why is the computer unusable when supposedly no resource is being heavily utilized?

Hi, For a few months I've been having issue with a periodically slow computer. As it says it the title of this post, I noticed that when my computer is plugged in, it runs so slow that it is unsable. I have all my drivers up to date, I have checked that my power options are set to maximum when on charger, etc.If I remove the battery and plug the computer : same problem. If I use my HP docking station (power cord in the docking station instead of the computer directly) : same problem.I cleaned my Event Logs (after backing them up): same problem.I checked for unwanted processes when charger is plugged : nothing significant. The computer is not heating when plugged in, fan is running fine, I have the active cooling setting enabled, and no temperature alerts. I've read on some shaddy forums that the problem could just be my power cord being defective. It that possible? Is there a way to verify this assumption before buying a new power cord? Could it be the plug FROM the computer that is defective or since the problem also happened when docked is it unlikely? Thank you in advance for any answer/input/information. MCC

Most recently, as part of the clean-up I eliminated a number of programs running on start-up and the computer was operating better than ever. The only significant changes I've made recently were that I bought an iPad recently and installed the sync program. My router died so I purchased the Apple AirPort Extreme and installed it and made my once attached printer a network printer.Recently the sync program started erroring out on boot-up or intermittently if I left the computer on. Perhaps I have no virus and it is simply the conflict that this program has. The first time I ran Malwarebytes and SAS they returned some infections. One of them was SolutionAV. Malwarebytes and SAS said they got rid of the infections. In safe mode, Malwarebytes and SAS do not show any infection now. I have ran TDSSkiller. It shows 5 unsigned files and a suspicious TDSS possibility. When I ran GMER, it finished and said there were no system modifications. The ark log file was empty. I have attached the Attach log to this post. Here is the DDS:

A few days ago my computer worked just fine. I didn't download or install something new recently, just watched some videos, played some games and browsed the web. Then suddenly when I wanted started it again the day after, it took a long time to get to the welcome screen, the desktop was loading really slow and the task bar wasn't reacting properly. After some time, I can manage to use windows explorer but at random points it freezes again or stops working. Sometimes it even takes minutes to open the start menu.
I began trying to find a solution by running CCleaner, scanning for registry errors, scanning for viruses or malware, and system repair, but none seemed to make things better.

One thing that happened is something I've encountered a number of times before: the restart proces freezing at the formation of the windows logo. OK, so every few weeks, I get a problem where, often when I am watching TV (though that may be a red herring as I often have it on) , the sound becomes completely distorted, and if I try and move the mouse, the cursor will jump rather than move smoothly i.e. as if the framerate has gone down to 1/2 a frame per second.

I also randomly get a problem after rebooting where the graphics are really laggy, and I get a weird framerate like 124fps recorded on my TV viewer, where it should be 50fps, I reboot again & it's usually OK again. Any ideas?

A:Weird random slow motion effect makes PC unusable

Sounds like ya have a lack of ram or available ram for usage. I see you have about 8gb total. That should be enough for win 7; but; you might want to try expanding that even further if possible. Also; go into task manager and close any programs that you know you dont need open as that should hopefully help.

Hi everyone, annoying problem here--My laptop, a new HP DV7, is very fast in every aspect except for right after login when the system tray icons just appear to remain unresponsive for a full 1-2 minutes. System tray icons hang at startup:Wireless: The wireless icon has the red X through it (suggesting that the wireless hadnt loaded yet), when the wireless in fact works just fine for the entire 1-2 minutes that it is X'd out.

Power Management: The power management icon (battery), if you click on it to change settings in the first 1-2 minutes, will popup the small power management menu, but not allow you to change any options or click anything (the cursor does that vista circular thinking icon thing)

Volume: The volume seems to work the best, but still not well. It lets me change volume, but the volume popup from the tray icon gets stuck open. It will stay open and frozen until the 1-2 minutes passAfter the 1-2 minutes, everything just seems to start working fine immediately. The wireless icon switches to the correct world icon (even though it had already been working for 2 minutes).I've tried restoring my computer, running several scans - no infections whatsoever. Funny thing is, if I log off the computer and then log back on, the icons all load fine INSTANTLY. It is only after a rebootMy startup and services are very clean, I'm pretty anal about all that stuff. Those 3 icons I mentioned above are my ONLY system tray icons. I'm so sick of Vista, XP never did this ... Read more

It seems like you?ve taken all the necessary OS/software precautions, my question is: what do you have under the hood? If you?re running on limited RAM, that might be some of the hangup.

Cheers,

Hello,
So I have been using my HP Pavilion g6 laptop for around a year now, and so far it has been smooth sailing. However, around a day or two ago, my computer suddenly became unbearably slow on normal mode. I would try to open google chrome and it would freeze up my computer, and even opening the start menu took an incredible amount of time. This was a sudden onset of slowness and I cannot remember if I installed any updates that may have caused this. Using even safe mode, opening the uninstall part of control panel would take ages. I have tried many things to fix this:
Used SFC/scannow, caused a crash.
Used disk check on safe mode, says that I need to defrag 1% of the disk. However, It also says there is a SMART check failure. I am quite confused about this because when I looked again it said that the smart status was "good". (HP support center)
Deleted temporary files
Checked task manager to see if there was any processes that were taking up too much memory, it looks good normally. However, on normal mode whenever I would open chrome the CPU would spike to 60%
Specs are: AMD A6-3400M APU with Radeon graphics.
6gigs of RAM
Thanks!

Sounds like and infection of some kind, whether it be viral or spyware/malware. If you can get back into safemode with networking and update your AV and run a full system scan. Then run any spyware malware spoftware you have making sure that you update first and then run full system scan for each.

I plan on getting a Corsair h100i and setting it up on pull for easier cleanup later in the years.

It is worth upgrading to Push/Pull though? I mean... I do not want my pc to be overly noisy if it does not have to be and logically, there is not any more air getting through than using pull since the fans that come with them are synchronized for the specific grill.

What do you guys think?

im trying to pull some data off of a small hard rdive. ive hooked it up in my computer as the primary slave drive, and the bios detects all the correct settings for it, but when i try to boot, it gives me this message:
Hard disk boot failure, please insert system disk.
If I disable it in the bios, my hdd boots with no problem, although i can hear a clack clack clack noise most of the time from the other hard drive while im using my computer.
does anyone know of a different way to pull the data from it? i'm assuming it is corrupted, even if it's not, i don't have the original computer it was in, so i can't use it as a primary master drive.
any ideas?
