Microsoft: Manually Installing Windows 10 Creators Update Could Break Down PCs

Microsoft pushed the go-ahead button for Windows 10 Creators Update on April 5, allowing experienced users to manually download the new OS version on their PCs.

One week later, on April 11, Microsoft also started the official rollout of the Creators Update as an automatic upgrade via Windows Update, but in this case, the release takes place gradually, and some users need to wait more than others to receive it.

As a result, more and more users are tempted to upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update manually, but Microsoft says that you shouldn?t do this unless you are an experienced user.
Critical issues
The reason is that the Creators Update might be hit by compatibility issues, either hardware or software, and when you manually install it, the upgrade process bypasses any checks that could prevent critical problems. On Windows Update, on the other hand, Microsoft is only making the Creators Update available for your system when it is 100 percent sure that all problems are gone.

?It?s important to note that when customers use the Software Download Site to manually install the Creators Update they bypass many of these blocks,? Microsoft explains.

?Therefore, we continue to recommend (unless you?re an advanced user who is prepared to work through some issues) that you wait until the Windows 10 Creators Update is automatically offered to you. When your device becomes eligible for the Creators Update rollout, you?ll be prompted to make some important choices on your privacy settings before the Creators Update can install.?

Microsoft says that ?millions? have already upgraded to the Windows 10 Creators Update, while third-party data shows that approximately 10 percent of the Windows 10 PCs out there are currently on version 1703.

Adoption of the Creators Update is expected to grow substantially in the coming weeks and months as it becomes available via Windows Update for more systems, but this all depends on how fast Microsoft manages to address the compatibility issues that are blocking the upgrade.Click to expand...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft Announces New Monthly Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft rolls out new cumulative updates every month on Patch Tuesday, including here not only security fixes targeting vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and installed Microsoft software, but also OS improvements and other tweaks refining the overall experience.

Today, the company announced that it would publish a second cumulative update for businesses running Windows 10 Creators Update, this time including non-security fixes.

Microsoft says that although it wants to release one such cumulative update every month (in addition to the security release on Patch Tuesday), there might be cases when more than a single extra cumulative update is shipped, depending on the bugs that it needs to fix.

These updates will be listed as ?Updates? in WSUS and Configuration Manager, with certain exceptions when critical issues affecting organizations are targeted, so the updates will be flagged as ?Critical Updates.?

Customers who use Windows Update for Business won?t have these updates installed automatically if options to defer quality updates are in place.

You can simply ignore these updates
The software giant explains that Windows 10 users getting these updates will be allowed to deploy them just like the updates that are shipped on Patch Tuesday, but at the same time, be provided with options to deploy each of them only to a subset of devices.

?This enables the organization to ensure that... Read more

Microsoft Finally Fixes Error 633 in Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 cumulative update KB4022716 earlier this week, and one of the most important changes that it brings is a bugfix for error 633.

If you?ve never experienced this error, the chances are that you have no idea what it does, though there are thousands or maybe more users out there who have been trying to deal with this since the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update.

In just a few words, this error impacts modems and dial-up connections, causing them not to work correctly, even though everything was just fine before the update to the Creators Update. We?ve also experienced the same bug on at least two Windows 10 laptops here at Softpedia, and finding a workaround was a really difficult job, especially because the typical fixes made no difference.

So if you are also experiencing the same problem and want to have it fixed to continue using a dial-up connection in Windows 10 Creators Update, just download and install Windows 10 cumulative update KB4022716 and everything should return to normal.

The easiest workaround
The only workaround that we tried and which got the modem working on our PCs involved launching the Windows 10 Registry Editor (by typing regedit in the Start menu) and navigating to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan

Look for a key called RequiredPrivileges and double-click to open it. At the end of the tex... Read more

So, Secunia has just told me that the versions of Microsoft Outlook 2002, Word 2002, and Excel 2002 I have on my computer (Windows XP Home SP3) are unsecure and need to be updated. Secunia provides direct download links to Microsoft for these updates, but there are some hassles (I know! Hassles? With Microsoft?!).First, it opens IE -- it apparently won't work with Firefox. Second, all the update links lead to a page that signs me up for a Microsoft Update service that gives Microsoft even greater access to my PC.Unless it's absolutely necessary, I just have no desire to provide more access to my computer to a bunch of strangers.Does anyone know if there's a way to update these programs without signing up for a service? Even today, not all computers are hooked up to the internet -- I figure there must be a way to just get the updated files. Thanks!Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Hi all,

I use Linux and CUPS to provide free and stable networking printing shares for our community centre. Its easy to connection windows xp clients to the linux printer server, windows 7 is a pain, I have a work around, but would like to make it more streamlined.

I can get some older printers that do not have official windows 7 drivers working by using windows update during the driver selection phase of the printer set-up procedure. And selecting a slightly different printer from the list of available windows update drivers.

While this method works, there is a delay of between 5-10 minutes after clicking the windows update button before the list of drivers appears.

I would like to know if its possible to do any of the following 2 ideas:

1. manually access these driver files on Microsoft website somewhere, and download them for latter use.

2. Find where windows 7 saves the downloaded driver files and package them some how so they can be re-distributed.

As always your comments/suggestions are very welcome.

I don't think there is a way to do that I would recommend that you set up a domain and be the system administrator for all fo the Windows 7 pcs, so you can install all of the updates on all of the computers at the same time.

Microsoft/Windows Update works when you let it "automatically" install updates - i.e. Click on "Turn Off".

It fails when I try to do it manually.

NOTE: It is only the install that fails - "A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed". I have no problem selecting and downloading updates.

I have tried a number of ideas posted here and elsewhere. But, so far, nothing has resolved the issue. This is not a result of a repair, serivice pack update, etc. I tried Dial-a-fix also, but it did not work either.

She has only Windows Defender and Windows Firewall running on her laptop (security wise).
I know that is is recommended to uninstall 3rd party security suits before installing major Windows Updates, but is it also recommended to disable Windows Defender and disable Windows Firewall as well?

Will disabling them interfere with installing the new anti ransom module that is in the new Windows Defender?

Thanks

Microsoft Corp. has a problem on its hand with the latest update for Windows 10: The software giant telling consumers not to update their operating system just yet.
In a blog post, Microsoft said it is deploying an update that blocks the Creators Update as it works through feedback it has received since rolling out the update two weeks ago. “Blocking availability of the update to devices we know will experience issues is a key aspect of our controlled rollout approach,” wrote Microsoft in the post. “We decide what to block based on user impact, and blocking issues are a high priority for us to address as quickly as possible. During the time it takes to address an issue, we want to limit the number of customers exposed to that issue.”

This is no different from the initial upgrade and the Anniversary Update. If a system is not compatible in some way (drivers, installed apps, etc.) you will not be offered the update.
If you choose to download the ISO, you will get it as is, so I do not recommend that unless you enjoy a challenge. I always find it interesting that when some folks get impatient, they refuse to wait. When things do not go as expected they complain.

If you can?t install the latest Microsoft updates read on!
I have posted on here before because my pc would not update to build 1703 or 1709. I was advised to do a clean install but this is too drastic as you lose your programmes. It has taken months and 14 major crashes because eventually Microsoft activates the update assistant which overrides any option to defer feature updates and you get stuck in a loop. I spent hours researching the problem and watching the pc restore itself to v1607 so many times and I was in despair. I am not a techie and did not see why I should have to solve what is a very big problem.
The Microsoft Community support site has numerous postings from desperate people about this and I have followed all sorts of instructions but nothing worked. Now my grandson has worked the magic for me. He updated the BIOS but it still crashed. He then updated drivers, removed all peripherals like USB speaker connections and connected an Ethernet cable so he could remove the wireless card from the motherboard. Bingo! I now have v1709. It may have been any one of those things or maybe all of them but this has worked for others too so I hope it helps more people.

Hi,There are a couple of options.First lets perform a disk cleanup and try to create space on drive. Right-click on the drive c: in any folder and click on properties.  Now click on disk cleanup and wait while the space gets calculated, In the next window click on clean up system files and wait for further calculation. Now in the window that appears mark all the unnecessary file (such as old updates, temporary files etc...) and press OK and delete the files. See if there is enough space for installation.Insert a Usb pendrive with at least 10 GB of free space and start computer. During installation of the update if there is not enough space it should give you the option to use the drive for installation purpose. After the installation is complete you can remove drive.Take a look at this link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/not-enough-disk-space-for-annive...Hope it helps,David

Wow! My wife was playing a game on her pc (The games was downloaded months ago and she wasn't online) when bang - the computer screen went black and after a short time a message came on-screen to not shut off the computer and that Microsoft Windows updates where being installed and that the computer would restart several times. This happened at 2:00 pm and finally finished updating at 4:00 pm. It turns out that Microsoft went ahead and installed the Creators update without even asking - bang and away it started.

No option to opt-out of doing it, they just did it. She will never use any of that stuff.

She hasn't spent much time on it since the upgrade so we don't know if the printer still works, or if her games are still working or if everything is still working.

I sure wish they would give people the option to opt-in or out instead of just doing it. Doesn't seem right to me!

Your thoughts please...

Next week, Microsoft will release the Windows 10 Mobile Creators Update for just thirteen handsets, but the rollout has already begun for PCs. Last week, Microsoft began to push the latest version of its OS to PCs through Windows Update, but it's not making its way to all machines at the same time.

Microsoft said that "the first phase will target newer devices, especially those we tested together with our OEM hardware partners", before gradually expanding to more devices. Last year's Windows 10 Anniversary Update deployment took several months to complete, and the company has said the Creators Update will take a similar amount of time.

It's not yet clear exactly which PCs Microsoft is prioritizing with the first wave of its rollout, as there's no definitive list of those devices. But if the Creators Update isn't yet showing up for your PC in Windows Update, Microsoft has made it easy for you to jump the queue and upgrade to the latest version right now.Click to expand...

Since installing the creators update (and all subsequent updates) my computer has been running much slower. Not everything is affected and the two most noticeable things are-

1) When bringing up the permission screen for anything that needs admin status - this takes twice as long as it used to both to load and to go back to desktop after approving. Each takes about 7 seconds occasionally more.

2) When opening any browser for the first time (Chrome, Firefox, IE or Opera) again this is taking about double the time it used to

Most other things, including start up and shut down are about the same as before creators update -

I would like to comment on the Fall Creator's Edition Update of Windows 10!  This has to be one of the biggest disasters that Microsoft has ever accomplished.  As one can see from the various problems encountered after the install this update was not well designed, was not thoroughly quality controlled and now has the support staff scrambling to figure out how to answer all of the issues that it caused.  Here is my list of issues after the update:  Mail and Calendar programs missing from Start Menu, Control Panel Apps shows them to be installed but I cannot add to start menu and cannot start either program.  Several other Apps also missing from Start Menu including Amazon, Adobe Reader and most other third party Apps but also several more Microsoft Apps or Windows Programs.  Files missing:  Somehow during the install Microsoft decides to remove the pointers from the Pictures and Documents folders so that it appears all previous files in these locations are lost.  By navigating thru Users...Documents I was able to retrieve all of the files but how many novice or new users are going to know how to do this type of trouble shooting?  This is a bonafide nightmare for Microsoft and takes me one step closer to trading in all of Dell computers for Macs!  It cannot possibly be worse than two days of troubleshooting and researching how to get back to the same functionality I had before installing the latest Windows 10 Update!  ... I have an Ideacentre B550 AIO using Windows 10.  Over the past year I've had a few blue screens of death.  I've tried diagnosing where the problem is, but failed. Now, the PC will not complete the version 1709 (Creators) update.  I get to a point where it says "33% completed" & it freezes and dies.  I've unplugged all peripherals and run the update troubleshooter.  It shows files it claims were fixed, but the next time I run it it shows the same files as being fixed again. Any suggestions about what to do? I'm pulling my hair out over what to do.

As a regular user, why spends 99% of the internet time, reading and browsing, do I need The Windows 10 Creators Update? I never played a game on PC and not using it for work. Would I notice any difference if I decided to install it? At the moment, everything on my Desktop works absolutely fine.

Get to Know the Windows 10 Creators Update with These 150 Screenshots

The 150-picture gallery
Microsoft Edge is one particular app getting improved, and in addition to features such as pinning tabs aside and more extensions, the browser is also benefiting from new security tools, such as click-to-run for Flash content you come across online.

Windows Defender is evolving to Windows Defender Security Center to group all security features in the OS, while the new blue light filter is there to make sure that you can continue working on the PC during the night by reducing the amount of blue generated by your monitor.

The Creators Update is undoubtedly worth installing, and the huge photo gallery below is supposed to help you get to know the new OS version before you actually proceed with the deployment. There might be other new features that we didn?t get to include in the gallery, but the 150 pics should be enough to help you get an idea of what?s to come in this update.

In the meantime, if you want to try out the Creators Update yourself before it goes live via Windows Update, you can download the preview builds that were released to insiders. Build 15063 is RTM and comes with the same features as the one you?ll get April 11.Click to expand...

As with the Creators Update, the key to our phased approach is actively listening to all available feedback mechanisms and making the appropriate product updates during the rollout. This allows us to provide a high-quality experience for the broadest set of users at an accelerated rate, while also continually increasing the quality and security of Windows 10. This was our approach with the Creators Update released in April and user feedback on this approach was very positive.

For the best experience, we recommend you wait until Windows 10 is automatically offered to your device. You don?t have to do anything to get the update; it will roll out automatically to you through Windows Update if you?ve chosen to have updates installed automatically on your device. Once the download is complete and the update is ready to install, we?ll check with you, so you can pick the right time to finish the installation and reboot. We do this so we can ensure the update does not disrupt you, and we use active hours to help suggest a good time.

If you don?t want to wait for the update to roll out to you, you can manually check for updates on your personal PC using the steps below. This will only work if your device is eligible to get the Fall Creators Update as part of the initial roll out phase. Alternatively, you can manually get the update today via the Software Download Site. This option is only recommended for advanced users on devices running a licensed version of Windows 10. If ... Hi all Since I installed Windows 10 Creators Update (someday in April) I am having an issue with the mouse cursor being very small in all citrix applications and on some parts of the screen in Word. This totally drives me nuts since i support most of my customers in citrix applications. After browsing the forums with no results whatsoever I decided to roll back to the previous version of windows and give the Creators Update another go in a year or so. Since I couldn't roll back to the previous Version of Windows in the Windows Update app (the option just doesn't show up),  I did a full restore by means of the function provided in the Lenovo BIOS. That did work fine but it just reinstalled with the current Version of Windwos (1703 wich is still Creators Update). So no joy there. How can I restore to the Windows-Version that the Notebook was shipped with? I can see a unmounted partition of 1 GB in size. That sounds promising although a bit small... Any ideas? Thank you Markus

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Reaches RTM

Microsoft has completed development of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, with the official release to take place as planned on October 17.

The company today shipped Windows 10 build 16299.15 to insiders in the Fast ring, and according to reports, this is the RTM build of the Fall Creators Update that everyone will get later this month.

The only difference is that Microsoft will continue to service (to improve) this particular build with more cumulative updates, and this means that insiders will be provided with several patches in the coming days until October 17.

Microsoft has promised to confirm when the RTM build is compiled, so an announcement in this regard is expected anytime soon, especially because the company is also likely to start pushing smaller patches to devices enrolled in the Insider program in the next few days.

No word on the mobile release just yet
For the time being, no stand-alone ISOs are available for insiders, but once the very same build is released to the Slow ring, such media should also be released for those who want to perform a clean install. Additionally, this build should also make it to the Release Preview ring in the coming weeks.

Of course, whoever wants to clean-install build 16299.15 can build their own ISO, though this requires additional steps. Learn here how to build your own Windows 10 ISO.

Now that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is close to getting the final go-ahead, insiders in... Read more

Lenovo's site for compatibilty with Windows 10 Creators Update does not indicate that the A530 was even tested. Has anyone succesfully applied the Windows 10 Creators Update on an Ideacenter A530? I am currently on version 1607 build 14393.1593.I believe the update would show 1703 and 15063.332 after application.

Now that Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) is released, and HP has published its list of compatible notebooks and desktops for the new OS update, why is my notebook not on the tested list. My notebook is the HP Envy 15-k204na and is less than 2 years old. In fact my HP Care Pack is just about to finish. I think it is outrageous that a relatively new high end notebook is not being tested, and of course hopefully proved to be compatible. Can any of the the HP experts furnish any reason as to why this situation should be the case.

Hi. I have just updated to the Windows 10 Creators Update (15063) - however the EasyResume feature has now stopped working.  I know this is tied to the power management driver and the Lenovo Instant On service, however I have tried to re-install all the relevant drivers without success.  Does anyone know how to get this working again? Thanks.
