Strange Video Bug (games)

Q: Strange Video Bug (games)

Hello everybody, I entered computer hell a few months ago when my completely ancient geforce2 gts 32 meg graphics card stopped rendering polygons.

Now, I figured this would be just the end of the card's life. It was something like three or four years old and the fan had stopped working on it. I had since replaced most every other part of my machine save the graphics card, so I lived with my machine not rendering 3d anything until I could afford a new card.

Well I got a geforce4 128 meg card, and when I installed it my computer still would not render polygons. I reformatted my machine and tried again, and it worked... for about 48 hours.

It may not be important, but I played Knights of the Old Republic on the fresh format solidly until my wife wanted a game of Diablo, so I installed Diablo, played a game, and when I went back to KotOR the game didn't load (see below). I went on to install the rest of my games and try them with similar results, some of which are listed below.

My current machine I've built myself, it's got:

duron 1.8 ghz processor
foxconn 748k7aa 400 mhz fsb mainboard
768 mb of ddr 400 ram
onboard sound (at the moment, I've got an audigy one I yanked out to see if that was maybe causing issues)
geforce4 mx 4000 agp with 128 meg o ram

None of these parts were installed in my machine when the problem first came up, so I have to assume it's either a software conflict of some kind or:

My power supply (400 watt, standard cooling)
Lack of cooling (new cpu fan, gpu doesn't have its own fan, have a tower fan but it's old)
My dodgy as hell cd rom drive that's due to be replaced (sometimes doesn't recognize cds, even in the command prompt. Machine still detects the drive, but the drive won't spin up)

My software:
Windows XP Pro sp1 (dodgy cd key prevents me from upgrading to sp2)

Standard nvidia forceware drivers (tried omega drivers as well, no dice)

Games:

diablo 2 (sprites with some low tech lighting, works)

deus ex (polygons, loads but crashes the moment I hit a key)

Star Wars: KotOR (doesn't load a new game, the old game I had after the fresh format will load but crash the moment I hit a key after loading)

Civ 3 Conquests (works; again, sprites)

JK2 (won't load)

Warcraft 3 (works on first install, once I quit the game and try to reload it won't load)

AOM: The Titans (loads menu but not game)

None of these games offer any error messages when they quit out, they simply disappear and I find myself staring at the desktop. Does anyone have any idea what it could possibly be? I've updated every driver I can find, flashed my bios, tried alternate drivers and none seem to change anything.

Thanks for your time

Kadim

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Strange Video Bug (games)

... GPU doesn't have its own fan? Its probably the GPU overheating..

buy a zalman gpu fan (best out there that I know of) and if that doesn't fix it,
update to the latest nVidia forceware drivers from thier website.

And what do you mean it won't render polygons? Polygons are a shape..
Does it not render shapes well?

The PSU looks fine, (but how old?)

Could be the optical drive, since these games have to load files from a CD,
that could be causing the problems.

Solutions: but a GPU fan, buy a new optical CD-Drive.

First off, my PC specs:

AMD Athlon X2 4400+
BFG GeForce 7800GTX OC
2GB Crucial Ballistix PC3200
Windows XP Home

Problem I am having is that recently I have noticed in just about every game an issue with the graphics being sort of accelerated. For example, I was playing Planetside and noticed that any moving animation or a picture of someone walking or something would be speeded up, like in fast forward or something. While walking in the game I was teleporting, sort of like lag issues but the game was progressing at the same rate I was just actually jumping forward very fast and moving fast. Looking from third person perspective the animation of my character running was also in fast forward. This has been happening in a lot of games, sometimes causing them to crash. This is a brand new PC and so I am sure it is not a hardware problem, probably just some setting I need to change. Any suggestions?

It doesn't happen often but sometimes it freezes for a second while loading a certain game which works fine on another day and gives BSOD. Sometimes it happens after I've loaded the game and am in the moment of playing. My hardware is more than enough for the games I run and I even run them on low-mid even though I can manage high settings. The games I usually run are CS:GO, League of Legends and Modern Warfare 3 [rarely play; received 1 BSOD while loading it]

I've uploaded my dump files.

Thank you.

Okay, so I purchased a brand new computer (in parts) from NewEgg. I got:

Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 R Motherboard

Galaxy GTX550TI Video Card 2GB DDR5

Zephyr MX-750 (750 Watts)

AMD 6-core FX-6100 3.3Ghz Processor

A single 8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM stick

A 1 TB Hard drive which I used as my main, and I owned a previous 1TB Hard Drive which I am using as my secondary.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. I've played Guild Wars, League of Legends, and Skyrim, and anywhere between 10-60 minutes, my pc will crash, freezing up completely and the sound will get stuck. I've gone 8+ hours with the PC on while in the Skyrim Construction set, using Microsoft Word, and browsing the net. At one point, I got the Blue Screen of Death (Only 1 incident) with the following code: 0x0000001E

I've updated everything, video card, motherboard, any windows component, updated. I ran my antivirus in case I brought anything from the old 2ndary HD, nada. There have also been a couple cases where we could smell something hot. Not burning, just hot.

It continued to freeze when I tried to play ANY game, so I sent the video card back. Had to be the video card, what else could it be? I got the new one today. It lasts longer, but it continues to freeze when playing any video games. I have part replacement/refund from NewEgg for another 20 days, I need to figure this out now. Help!!!

What freaks me out is that EVERYTHING is new. No idea what I can do in this particular situation.

First time here so here goes

I have a Fujisu Siemens, Esprimo Mobile laptop with Vista Home Premium. I used to be able to play video files but now all I get is the sound and nothing else when I play on Windows Media Player or winamp. When I try it on Core Media Player I get an error screen.
For some reason, I can view videos fine on the internet.

I've also tried to play some games (Halo, Medal of Honour:Allied Assault) and it just says I have problems with something with direct x

I looked around on google and tried looking at this and found out about running "dxdiag", here is what it said in the display tab

Hi, my relatively new "HP ENVY TouchSmart m7 Notebook PC" has been having crippling lag while playing video games. The lag slows the computer down to about 0.2-0.5 frames per second, and slows the audio down to match the video speed (which produces a grinding sound). This lag happens every 10-45 seconds depending on how long the computer has been running. Some help would be appreciated.

The Problem
I am having video stuttering for the duration of 0,5s - 1s exactly every 60s on all games and videos. During the stuttering the framerate drops significantly and rises back to normal immediately after that. The mouse cursor remains unaffected during the stuttering. CPU and GPU usage and temperatures remain normal during the stutter. The Process "System interrupts" raises from 0,1% CPU usage to around 0,5% during this. Sometimes the 60s-interval-stuttering disappears without a cause, but most of the time it persists.

I have also noticed that the same kind of stuttering happens 5-6 times in quick succession when I plug in my mouse or keyboard or plug out my mouse (plugging out keyboard doesn?t trigger it). This kind of stutter also happens 3 times when i Connect my Wireless XBox360 Controller and 1 time when i disconnect it. This happens across all USB ports equally. I have tried plugging out all USB connections. The every-60s stuttering still happens.

The second observation isn?t really a problem, but due to similar stuttering nature they might be connected.
When did the problem start?
My PC started to work less smoothly over the time (some components are 7 years old), so i decided to format my Windows 7-SSD and install Windows 10 Pro freshly on it about a month ago. I have also bought a new PSU around this time, because my old one?s fan degraded due to age.
Sadly I can?t say 100% that the problem started with Windows 10, it might?ve been there before... Read more

I am highly frustrated by a weird error in two games: Return to Castle Wolfenstein and GTA Vice City. In both games, I am unable to get the zoom fucntion on the sniper weapons to work. At first it was just GTA, but when I came to a point where I had no choice but to use a sniper rifle in Wolfenstein, I discovered it there as well.

I have Vietcong, Battlefield 1942, Quake 3, etc, and zooming in and out works in all those games. I tried the following solutions:

Tried to bind the exact same keys in every game
Updated all games
Updated nVidia drivers to absolute latest (Detonator 44.10)
Updated DirectX 9

My system specs:

Win XP Pro SP1
1024MB RAM
Athlon XP 1700+
nVidia Ti4600 128MB graphics card

A:Strange error in two games

That is a strange problem.
For RTCW have you tried the following?
1) make an autoexec.cfg file in your main directory (if you haven't already got one)
2) inside type: bind x "weapalt" , change x to whatever key you want the zoom to be.
3) Load up RTCW, in the console type: exec autoexec.cfg
4) Select your sniper rifle and now press the key you bound earlier. What happens?

Another thing.. are you able to use the binoculars to see things. The bind for that is: bind x "+zoom" If that doesn't work as well then something is definately up. This problem seems very bizarre to be happening in two completely different games.

Good luck. I hope I've been enough help to atleast get your first born's arms.

This started awhile ago pretty randomly. I play WoW, TF2, CSS, SWTOR, and LoL. I experiance the same strange drop in FPS into single digits for about 5-10 seconds, then right back up to 60-70 FPS. I have tried everything that I know and am still getting the strange drop in FPS.

I have reinstalled Win7, updated all drivers, etc. I have ran AV software, and Malwarebytes, and got nothing. When I run my games i run Gamebooster, still nothing. Cleaned my cache, cookies, defragged, everything and still I get these nasty FPS drops.

I'm running

64bit Win7
Intel Core Duo2 3GHz
3GB RAM
Geforce 8600 GT

So yeah, if anyone out there could help I would much appreciate it. All I wanna do is play my games without this annoying FPS drop. Thanks All.

I'm having trouble describing this, but when I run a video game and it displays 2d content, (movies, menus, etc.) it will display rectangular dots, usually about half a centimeter in width, and maybe three quarters centimeters in hight. A lot of them are mostly black and all of the black ones have a green, red, and blue pixel inside of them, all in the same spot, all right up next to each other. Sometimes, the dots are transparent and show my desktop, or whatever else is behind the game. They seem to occur mostly where the image should be dark or black. Also, a lot of them display images from a few frames ago. However, all the screenshots I have taken look normal. I took a few pictures with my phone, and I apologize for the quality. It might have something to do with my dual monitors, but I don't know.

Hi!
I really don't know which forum to post under since the nature of my problem is that I don't know exactly what's wrong.

I bought a new comuter this fall and from the begining I've been having these major crashes where I'm forced to use the resetbutton to restart the computer. Crashes mostly occur when I'm playing games that utilize 3D-graphics but they also happen when i play ordinary videofiles in WMP.
I talked to the techsupport provided by my retailer and they told me to return the computer to them for testing. When they returned it they claimed to have run 100 hrs of automatic graphic tests and no crash.
Whn I talked to them again they suggested that the problem might be that I had dirty electricity so I got me an UPS, but to no avail.

I am pretty much unable to see what might be causing this problem so any help that I may recive will be most heplful. I have a DXDiag but if you require any more info, please tell me.

Most of the basic tests they use don't stress the drivers and hardware enough to cause a failure. I don't think it's a line issue, more likely a computer hardware failure or driver issue.

I've been getting this strange computer lag in games for about 4 months now and it's really starting to drive me crazy.

I've had this computer for over a year and a half now and never had any problems in games before afew months ago. I used to play TFC in a league all the time and never had ANY problems at all.

Now when I go into these games and start playing I'll get almost a jerky movement sometimes, usually when there is something on my screen (bot, other person, etc). My screenview suddenly locks and lags for a second or two, then goes back to normal for afew seconds (up to 10-15 usually) then does it again. At first I thought I was running the game at too high a resolution, but even when I drop down to 640x480 it happens.

My computer is over the recommended specs for all of the above games, so I dont see how it could happen. I used to play Counter-strike on my old P1 200mhz without this kind of lag.

I formatted my machine yesterday out of frustration to get rid of this, and then did the windows update thing, etc. I installed UT2k4 again, hosted a game with 7 bots, and it happened again. I'll be running at one of them shooting, and then my character will jerk up.

This is fairly annoying, and it happens frequently, though it doesn't happen every time. Most of the time, I have to restart the laptop. I can put the screen down and raise it back up, and it temporarily fixes the problem until I have to close out. Either that, or it restarts the computer. I have posted a picture below of what it looks like. Any help with this is appreciated. I have updated my video drivers, also. Thanks.

For no reason that I can discern, the audio on my desktop has decided to go totally out of whack whenever I play a game on it. I thought it was originally a problem with Mass Effect 2 (where I first saw the issue). All sounds coming out of the speakers would be accompanied by various snaps, crackles, and pops, and it sounded like all the voices ingame were being played twice at the same time. In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I got the same rice krispies effect as ME2, and the background music was erratic (played superfast and seemed to spontaneously change and reset). When playing Supreme Commander, all I got was some nice screeching and constant tones.

I thought that perhaps it was a problem with programs running in fullscreen, but SupCom did it in window mode as well, and 1602 AD (or Anno 1602, whatever you know it as) didn't have issues in fullscreen mode. The strange part about all of this is that it ONLY seems to affect my games; all Windows sounds play normally, and I can listen to music and watch movies with no audio problems.

I've tried updating the audio drivers, but that had no effect. What REALLY got me was that I completely reformatted the hard drive and put a fresh install of Windows on it, yet after installing Oblivion I still have audio problems. When I check my audio device in Device Manager, it checks out as having no problems (simply disabling/enabling does nothing, either). Basically I started disconnecting when I logged onto Blacklight Retribution after a recent game patch, after a few days the problem stopped and I was able to play again (with no changes to my computer) a few days later another patch was added and the problem occurred again, at first I thought it was a Blacklight specific problem (as this was my only installed game) however i installed a few other games (Kabold Online, Perfect World, Forsaken World, TF2, MW2 and C9) and I got the same problem on each of these games. I haven't been able to log onto a single Online game for more than 5 minutes, normally I'm disconnected at login, HOWEVER, my internet works completely fine in for everything else, i can browse the web, download game clients etc with no problem whatsoever.

Here's what I have tried so far.

- Rolled back NIC Driver (and put it back when this didn't work)
- Checked device manager for any problems with my NIC, (working as normal apparently)

The menus and HUDs in several mods for Battlefield 1942 are badly pixelated. I've never encountered the problem in any other games, just the one.

For years I attributed this to the developers of the mods, but my brother sais his computer doesn't have this dysfunction. I don't have the slightest clue why it's happening, so even a guess could be helpful.

Video card = ATI Radeon 9550 256MB.

For now I'll mess around with my video settings and see if I can get it working properly.
Edit:
No combination of video settings seems to do it. I've thrown together an image to illustrate the problem, but I'm not sure how to go about uploading it since it needs a URL.

Hello, I’ve got a very strange issue with several old games, and I'm trying to find a solution. I'll do my best to describe my issue.

I’m sitting on laptop, Lenovo Y580, packed with i7 quad core cpu and Nvidia Optimus system (intel hd 4000 + nvidia 660m). It’s all working on Windows 7 x64 (SP1 + All updates). All drivers are fresh and Nvidia driver is 332.21.

My problem is that in some old games (direct x 6 and 7 era) 2d elements flicker horribly, i'm talking about interface, menus and so on. 3d is ok. And that’s all only on Nvidia.

I saw this problem in several different games:

Rainbow Six (1998)
No One Lives Forever (2000)
Blood 2 (1998)
Gabriel Knight 3 (1999)

I've got a friend with the same laptop, the only different thing is that he has Windows 8 installed, no flickering. Same driver for nvidia.
I also have another friend with Nvidia Optimus laptop from another vendor and he is on Windows 7, he has flickering.
Aaaand i also found this guy in the interent with the same exact problem: https://forums.geforce.com/default/t...ents-and-fmvs/

So, i’m trying to understand what unites games mentioned above? (directx 6-7 i suppose?)
And what has changed in Windows 8, so flickering is gone?

p.s. I was able to launch NOLF and Blood 2 in window mode, flickering was gone, other games don’t have windowed mode.

p.s. i’m Russian, sorry for my English.

I also need to say that modern games run perfectly on my laptop. And also there are no flickering on Intel graphics, but it has some other issues which are not important

Hello everyone, and thanks in advance for reading / commenting on my post. Let me start by saying im not particularily tech-savvy guy, so if you have some suggestions, you might need to 'dumb them down.' The following issues started roughly 4 months ago, and have driven me all but crazy. (I'll list this in bullet points, because I always make run-on paragraphs otherwise) Okay, onto the problem:

Problem: Online games, (Rift, Wow, BF:BC2) used to work perfectly for me, but one day (coincidentally started after my purchase of a new video card and power pack) they started lagging horrifically. Strangely, my ping stays low.

Hello.

Even if I am running my games from SSD I have noticed a lot of hard disk activity when launching them and a lot of almost non stop disk activity coming from WD (Hell, it seems it's performing a quick scan almost twice a day).

I am not saying WD isn't good but that constant disk thrashing was getting on my nerves. I am now trying the new v8 from Qihoo's 360 TSE and that disk thrashing is no more and some of my games start up a lot faster (I mean a lot, like 10x).

Just posting this for you to know.

A:Too much disk thrashing with WD + Strange games issue

Microsoft apps are old-school, basic and not very optimized, WD included. They are just meant to work and that is it.

Hi guys

I'm having some strange connection issues. Firstly, my PC is connected to the internet just fine, i'm here typing this now through my PC. I can browse websites perfectly and download files perfectly fine.

The issue comes with connection to a few things that i've noticed and i'm sure they're all intertwined to something but i'm not sure what.

I can't connect to the steam store. I can't use audio voice chat in Overwatch. I can't connect to the World of Warcraft servers.

Now I can play multiplayer games just fine, I can actually play Overwatch and type and do everything else, but it won't connect me to the voice chat in game.

I downloaded the new patch for WoW the other day and from when I hit the play button in battle.net I get the following error:

http://EU.patch.battle.net:1119/wow/cdns: World of Warcraft was not able to connect to the network data source. For help fixing this issue, please see: https://battle.net/support/article/7411

I have tried all their basic steps in that article to no avail.

Finally, the steam store simply shows:

Error Code: -130

Failed to load web page (unknown error).

I've completely uninstalled battle.net and WoW and reinstalled which hasnt helped, i've reset my router (it's wireless and a wired connection isn't an option). I did a pathping to the WoW servers which gave me this:

When I'm playing almost any full screen game, after a while my monitor will go black, say "entering sleep mode" and then go into sleep mode, my computer is still on and a couple of seconds after this my sound will just turn into a continuous buzz, but my computer will still be on.
I have found no way to get my computer out of this state without hard shutting down and restarting.
I'm not sure what section to put this in put gaming seems to be the most relevant.
I' not sure what is causing this, but I think it might be my gpu, but I'm not going to buy a new gpu unless I'm 100% sure that it's my gpu causing the problem.
Can anyone explain why this may be happening? or better yet how to fix it?
But please don't just give me some registry cleaner that you have to buy. I've had enough of people just giving me a link, and saying "this will fix it" when I have a registry cleaner, and I've used it and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Hi. I'm new here but please help.. this is a weird problem & getting in the way of my work.

This is a new problem with the computer. My hard drive died & upon formatting the new one, this problem occurred.

64-bit Vista, high end comp.
I have 4 USB devices: a wireless network card, a mouse, a keyboard, and a midi piano.

The wireless network card works without any problems at all times but when I'm in Vista my mouse is very jittery and skips all over the screen. My keyboard lags and will occasionally freeze up and not read the input or freeze on a specific key & type that letter until it unfreezes a second later. When I'm playing my midi-usb piano it freezes up and plays strangely (it's basically the same problem for all 3 devices). My mouse is pretty much unusable.

What I found strange though is when I started up a game in full-screen, everything worked perfectly.

I have no viruses. I tried different devices, I tried unplugging certain devices. I tried disabling my anti-virus and restarting. The only thing that helps is if I play a game.

Hey there. I've heard you guys have a lot of technical expertise in this stuff. I hope someone can give me advice to kill this crazy problem of mine. I think I have the same problem as the post by pentagr titled "radeon 9800 pro" or something around those lines in the A/V section of the forums.

My computer will shut down everytime I turn on a game, like Rome Total War or even Gunbound. Shut down occurs whenever I turn on the visual plugins that you can use with Winamp like AVS. It isn't instantaneous, but takes a few minutes to shut down. It even sometimes randomly shuts down when I'm just browsing through the web. When it shuts down the power light is still on, but everything else is off (eg. all fans turn off & hard drive turns off).

The problem just started out of nowhere. I did not install any programs, did not screw around with settings that I didn't understand, did not alter any configurations and did not change any parts. One day my computer just shut down and from then on anytime I accessed anything "graphically intense" it would just shut down.

I updated my radeon drivers, still had the same problem and then rollbacked the drivers and still had the same problem. I reformatted. Still had the same problem (so therefore it is a hardware problem). I have two sticks of ram and tried out each of them seperately if the shut down still occured. It still shut down. I swapped my current 350w power supply with another 350w I... Read more

Have you tried the natest nVidia motherboard drivers? Although I don't recall problems with any of the nForce drivers that would cause that. I have heard people complain that ATI cards don't play well in nVidia motherboards but I know lots of people who run the mix with no problems.

have you tried with the side of the case off and a room fan blowing into the box to rule out heat? Blown all the dust out of your heatsink? Could your CPU, RAM or AGP voltages be too low? Could your RAM timings be too tight? Things change with age and what used to work may be just marginal with age and heat.

that's about all I can think of.

Later on in the evening I was randomly able to connect and play the game. I assumed that was that. The next day in the afternoon I could once again not connect to the game and nothing I did helped. Naturally I assumed this was a problem with this particular game but I was left horrified when the issue extended to all online games that I have tried (Halo 2, Warhammer Online). Hi all.

I have been having this very strange problem with vsync for sometime now and only recently discovered that it was something to do with v sync itself (I think).

This is what I recorded
Basically in some games (not all) I get what is shown in the video. Now the thing is I found while I was playing around is that if I disable v sync totally, this stuttering/tearing seems to go away by quite a lot. The fps goes to 90 (I think cod is fixed to that) and it smooths out a lot but its still a little jittery and not perfectly smooth. This is also the case with bad company 2.

I never had a problem with any game up until about 2 years ago when this started happening unexplainably.

Another strange thing about this is that it only seems to occour ONLINE. Single player has non of this at 60fps. If I use a 360 controller to move there is no stutter/tearing

I had the same issue with battlefield 3 but for some reason I cured it by limiting the fps to 59.95 and its smooth as butter. I have tried this with some of the other games but it does not work.

To add to the strangeness this also happends on a completely different PC I built a while back. And led me to believe it was an internet problem. I ran many tests all to come back clear, I even changed providers.

again as I say it only happends on some games not all.

games affected:

BF Bad company 2
All Call of Dutys
Crysis 2

Alright, for the past few days I've been playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Sometimes when I try to play on a server (any server, not just a few) I get a big "Connection Interrupted" message on my screen and a 999 ping. Sometimes I can get into games, but then a bit later I'll get the same thing.

The last time this happened, I closed Wolfenstein and opened SysMetrix (a utility to show system activity) and I saw that, under Net In, there was a fluctuating download of 1.5 to 3.2 KBPS, which is pretty bandwidth-consuming considering I'm on 56K. I ran Ad-Aware to make sure adware wasn't the issue, and I'm clean.

Any idea what the problem is or could be?

This has got to be the strangest thing ever to happen to me. I had an AGP ATI video card with 256 mb on board which I do not remember the exact model number. It was about 8 years old. I have recently bought a flat screen 1080i 24 inch led TV which works great as a monitor ( and I mean great) Eventually the ATI card went bad and a friend had lying around an older NVIDIA TNT2 model 64 pro64 with only 64 meg on board. I almost flipped out to find that this older NVIDIA card was a 100 times better. Now everything is so crystal clear even at 1920 by 1080 my screen looks almost like an apple retina display. even the colors are so much brighter. The biggest complaint I had with the ATI card was poor contrast which I blamed on my TV/monitor, But no more. How could this possibly be? it makes absolutely no sense.

A:Very strange video question (:

Not sure. But I had an opposite experience many years ago. I had a p2 300 with an ATi Rage Fury Pro (I think) and played EV Nova on it, shortly after I built a 1Ghz Athlon Thunderbird system and had a GF2MX 32Meg card and it didn't look as good as the ATi.

Perhaps you didn't have the correct/best driver installed.

In trying to fix an "audio, but no video" circumstance, I checked to see if I have all up-to-date codecs and players. I do. I ran the video through GSpot and it reported that the video was playable on my system. Still "audio, but no video." Then I put on a DVD, and it played fine. Immediately after that, I went back to various video files (avi, wmv, mpeg formats) and this time they ran fine too. The following day, after turning off my computer and then rebooting, once again I had the "audio, but no video" situation. I put on the DVD, as I did the day before, and once again, it triggered the video formats to begin playing fine. Something about playing the DVD is acting as a trigger to correct the video problem. Anyone have an idea about what it might be?

Hi.

I'm running on very stable XP system (P4, 800 MHz bus, 1GB RAM, 120 GB fast HD). I'm currently interesting in making DVDs for my child (as a matter of fact I've already done 11 DVDs) and I'm editing video in Adobe Premiere.
What I can't understand is the video quality of the final video I produce. When I watch final DVD on the standalone DVD player, the picture quality is OK (of course is a bit worse then original video, but I'm satisfied), but playing this DVD on the same computer (and the same DVD burner) on which DVD is made - drives me crazy. The picture is good in the static scenes, but not in the moving ones. It's full of strobo like effects and criss-cross lines. It's not happening in the standalone players!
And what I'm more confused is that same thing is happening when I play original footage (microsoft DVD AVI compression): watching it in the Premiere monitor window when I edit - everything looks perfect, but playing the same video in another program (BS player or windows media player or ...) yields bad results which I described earlier. I conclude that it must be a driver problem, but it's my top. Anybody knows?
Thanks in advance.

I'm having a few issues, and just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen, or may know what causes it.

First, this could be related, I'm not sure, a few days ago I ran GPUZ and CPUZ, clicking through the tabs and realized my video card was set at Pci-Express x4 1.1. I reseated the card several times, cleaned the pci-e slot, then used my secondary pci-e power connectors, and finally it's running as it should @ x16. I'm not sure how long it was like that, the performance decrease wasn't noticeable. (I'm actually curious if it was just reporting it wrong, because my benchmarks were extremely close; Counter Strike: Source| Video Stress test 216fps at x4, then when I fixed it, 224fps. All settings maxed. This all happened two days ago, and has been fine since fixing it, but..
Now, and this never happened before, and started right after that issue, sometimes when I boot up, if I right click the desktop, and select 'Refresh', the screen go's black for a moment, for about exactly 1 second, not long enough for the monitor to say (no video), but close. Once or twice it did do that though. Once yesterday while browsing this forum, it started, but this time it only did it if I tried to scroll up or down a thread. I minimized my browser, and tried to select refresh at the desktop, to see if it was the same bug, and it did it, I had to restart the machine.
Then just now, today, I booted up, signed into my user, and exactly then, as it said loading, just as the desktop should appe... Read more

A:Strange video issues

I can only guess at this, of course, but that certainly sounds like it could be a failing video card. But it could also be due to a under-powered or failing power supply or even bad or faulty RAM.

The symptoms are very similar to TDR events, but since you are not getting any messages (Display Driver xxx stopped responding and was recovered") then we can assume it is not that, for now.

Try the new drivers. Make sure you are doing a clean driver install when dealing with video issues.

Also test to see if advanced graphics trigger the events by changing the desktop from an Aero theme to one of the basic themes. When I refresh my desktop it is nearly instantaneous - I can barely see the flash. Your video is dogging down to perform that simple task.

Also, look in your Event Viewer to see if there are any Critical Errors or Warnings that might point you in the right direction.

Hope that helps.

I have a custom computer, with parts I can't desribe from heart. Either way I have a quite strange problem I reckon.
When I start my computer, everything seems fine. Once I get into windows, all good. Though as soon as I start a video file, either on computer or e.g. YouTube, the computer hangs. The only temp solution is to pull the plug. If I only reboot, the computer only says that there is no keyboard detected (!). Though if I either switch of the powersource or pull the plug, then the keyboard error upon reboot is gone, and once again I get into windows. Though as soon as hitting a website with any kind of video file the system stalls.
I have already purchased a new power sourse, as a friend thought it might be simply lack of power. Though the problem persists still. I am thinking it might be the video card, but I think that would be strange since windows still is working with full grafics.
Still I think it would be a hardware problem, dunno why, just think so with by base experince with computers.
I would be very thankful for any suggestions, as well as ideas how to check them.

You do not need to go to the Recovery Console to run an external monitor. Depending on the make and model, you usually hit the FN key and one of the function keys, like F6 to toggle to the external monitor. I would also try updating your video driver.

I have a system that all of a sudden does not display video after the W7 splash screen. This system has a graphics card in it and I had disabled the motherboards graphics port in the BIOS a couple years ago when I built it.

It has worked well ever since I built it but has changed due to either someone messing with it or maybe a windows update.

I currently have the system connected to a TV with an HDMI cable, but I have confirmed with an old monitor, it does the same using the VGA port.

I have also tried to repair using the Windows Repair Disk which strangely enough goes blank after the "Loading Files" screen.

All three options of safe mode stop after a certain amount of files that load. The screen does not go black here; it simply remains frozen with the file list showing.

I tried to do a fresh install of W10 and again goes black after the loading files.

Sorry I am being vague about the Hardware as I would typically look it up from the control panel and the boxes I had for the mother board, processor, GPU, etc are somewhere in the house and will have to find them.

Any ideas on what is going on? Maybe I need ot go into the bios and re-enable the onboard graphics and try that way.
