Preferred Solution: window starter to professional crash

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you verified that your netbook meets the hardware requirements for Win 7 Professional? If so look into Windows anytime upgrade. I'm not positive you can go from starter to Pro. But I know you can from Win 7 home to Pro or Ultimate.

Hi guys,

I've been using Windows XP Professional for several years and am quite happy with it. My roomate has a desktop that she bought some years ago and it came with Windows XP Starter Edition installed. Lately I've been trying to help her upgrade from her XP SE to XP Pro but before doing this I have some questions:

1. Is Windows XP SE at all upgradable to XP Pro? The reason I ask this is because:
1.1 I accessed "How to install or upgrade to Windows XP" on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941, but it does not mention Windows XP Starter Edition as one of the options of OS to be upgraded (only mentions Win98, Windows ME and Windows 2000 Pro
1.2 I also accessed http://www.comztek.com/Admin/ProdManager/dbview1.asp?name=228 and it says "You may not upgrade to Windows XP Professional from Windows XP Starter Edition,. as this goes against Microsoft’s End User License Agreement (EULA)"... is this true??2. In case Windows XP SE can in fact be upgraded to XP Pro, I have 2 questions:
2.1 To start the installation should I simply boot the desktop normally and then insert the Win XP CD on the CD-ROM unit and choose the option "upgrade"?2.2 Will files in the desktop and installed programs be preserved? Or will my roomate need to install all the program she uses again? What about local files of Outlook Express and the MSN Messenger emoticons? Will these be lost?
Any other recommendations??

Hi. I hope this is the place to get help and answers. I have been having issues with my laptop. I have Windows 7 starter and on IE9. I have been running in circles trying to solve. When I am on a website, for example, facebook. A pop up message would pop up when the site is not responding. It would say "Facebook.com not responding. NOW my latest thing I did...which I am on day 2 of THINKING the problem was solved. BUT I just got the message "Facebook.com not responding. RECOVER PAGE." I did go to TOOLS...INTERNET OPTIONS...to ADVANCED TAB and reset the computer/internet. I have brought in my computer to the "doctor" about a month ago and they cleared all virus and installed programs that I uninstalled. Like the flash player and such. They don't know what causes these running script. SO I know theres got to be something..simple that will solve it. Which I thought was resetting. Someone think it could be the "ADD ONS". I don't know but its not fun to try this or that and stil get on the deadend road. I have uninstalled AVAST this past weekend and put on AVG. I thought that AVAST was csusing the issues. My daughter had received a Dell Inspiron mini with Windows 7 starter preloaded. At some point it started crashing when attempting to connnect to our network (in home) to get on internet. I also noticed it would not run windows updates. After some research discovered possible virus. I did run several spyware, malware programs and was able to remove fake trojans. Everything seemed to be going well until I rebooted. The system now boots to system recovery options. Knowing there is nothing really on the computer to loose, I have tried ever option. When it runs startup repair, it is unable to repair the problem. I have tryed system restore, I picked a point previous to problems start, it said it restored it but it still boots back to system recovery options. I tried the image recover and factory image recovery. If i go to command prompt I even started the setup.exe and was going to reinstall but it says it needs some drivers and for me to insert dvd/cd. I dont have one since it came preinstalled, or at least I have never seen one with this machine. I can view in dos prompt everything on the machine. Every time I reboot it goes back in to repair cycle with no repair. Any help greatly appreciated.

What does "startup repair" detect? There is a text something like "view diagnostics details", click on it. Now you see all the tests it performed, most succesfully I assume. Succesfully is status 0x0, not interested in that.

What tests result in another status? Give as much information as possible

Depending on your computer, you may be able to use a Restore Partition to restore Windows 7 Starter. You may want to look on the support site for the manufacturer of your PC to see if there are instructions on how to do a restoration of factory settings or the factory install. The other way is to have a Windows 7 DVD to install Starter yourself using a Custom Install as seen in this tutorial: Custom Install Windows 7

i have been to other sites with no luck in helping me to solve my computer issue, so i am hoping you can help me out here. I have a dell Inspirion laptop 600M. I was having the blue screen of death errors so I wiped out my computer and reinstalled Windows XP. Needless to say that was a major pain and it took forever. Despite that I am having some problems with the computer (internet taking 10-30 minutes to load and things not going right after about the third time I turned it on to use it this began prior to that the first three times were fine) windows so I have been trying to reinstall XP Professional from the CD I bought from Microsoft (it is a genuine product). During the process i get two error messages, one about Outlook and another about a dll file, sorry cannot remember the exact one, saying they are corrupt and then It goes through the rest of the process and seems to complete, but when it askes me if i want to register I say, "no thanks, not at this time", as my internet is not connected wirelessly until I reset it up, and then it goes to the grass and clouds default XP desktop, but nothing else loads onto it. No toolbars, no folders, nothing and then it does nothing. I have to shut it off by holding down the power key. If the file is corrupt, the .dll file, what can I do as it is coming directly off the CD from Windows?

A:XP Professional Crash and Burn?

Yes, it sounds like it is your harddrive if you are getting that fail notice. Instead of buying a whole new laptop buy a new harddrive. Thay aren't expensive nor are they hard to replace.

Some examples here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Drives

You need to know if your laptop takes SATA or ATA-6 (IDE) drives. If your laptop is newer it probably is SATA.

Sounds like you have some messed up drivers or files. In windows. Did you update anything before you left.If so try and remove it in safe mode. Or you could just try and run a factory restore on it. Provideing their is no hardware problem. I am sure someone here might have a few ideals to.

Windows XP 32-bit will recognize and use a maximum of about 3.25 GB of RAM.

Windows XP 64-bit will recognize and use more than 4 GB of RAM.

Unless you plan to install it in a computer that has and needs more than 4 GB of RAM, use the 32-bit version.

You may also run into a problem with installing and using certain programs with the 64-bit version.

I am at work and my question is for the computer at home. I have reformat my harddrive and try to install win. xp professional on the computer. Turn on the computer and i am in dos mode. I put in the win. xp professional disk in the cd rom to install. The computer then goes installing, it starts by going to the xp setup screen, ask a few questions like Fats 32 and copywrite agreements and such. It would not go into the actual installation of the xp installation program where it would ask for a disk code. After the xp setup program, it then ask to restart my computer, which i did. After the restart it would ask to "press a key for cd-rom boot" and i did, then it would go into the xp setup screen again and the whole xp setup process would starts over again and then it would ask to be reboot again. Now during the beginning of restarting the computer, if i didn't press a key at that point of time when it was asking "press any key to boot from cd-rom", then it would give me this promt "NTLDR is missing press any key to restart". I then would press a key but it would not restart but the same prompt "NTLDR is missing press any key to restart" would appear again. I cannot do anyting at this point and have to mannually turn off the computer. I don't know what to do now?

Please help

A:need help in installing window xp professional

NTLDR is missing press any key to restart, your getting this error because there is a cd in the drive and it's looking for NTLDR file, which appears not to be on it. (strange)

go to www.bootdisk.com and download the six floppies for xp. Put the first one in your puter, and restart, run through all six, and then continue the set up process with the cd.

you said you reformatted the hard drive? I believe you have to set the partition first, then format. XP should do this for you, try the boot disks, and let us know if it works.

I have a Dell Inspirion 6000 (year 2005) that had XP home version installed. It was deteriorating in performance recently and last week went into "blue screen" mode with some memory dump error or some such message.

I was unable to find the recovery CD so a friend of mine suggested to install XP Professional in an effort to recover the data on the disk. We did manage to get XP Professional installed, although some of the devices (Audio, CD etc.) are not working. We were able to get most of the files from the hard drive but I can't get to the files from the desktops of both profiles (the old OS has a admin and guest profile). Are there any suggestions to find these files.

I have Windows XP and I have Office Professional 2003. I downloaded the Trial 2007 Office Pro from Microsoft's website, but after trying decided I really didn't like it so I uninstalled it. Even before I unistalled when ever I opened a 2003 application the Windows installer would pop up. Now that I have uninstalled 2007, my 2003 won't open, it is like it isn't there (although I went to the control panel and it was there). The Windows Installer pops up no matter what I try to do, even logging on to the internet.

I went into the control panel where you can add and remove programs and 2003 is still there. I tried restoring back to a previous date, but that wouldn't work.

Can anyone tell me how to get the Installer to stop popping up, and how can I get the system to recognize my 2003 Office Software?

Some searching lead me to Can I downgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Home Premium? - Microsoft Community.

Hello Everyone

I was in a similar situation. I had "Windows 7 Home Prem OA HP" on a HP desktop I bought new and then upgraded the system to Ultimate with an Upgrade key. But now that I bought a refurb desktop with no OS (with a COA for "Windows Vista Business OEMAc") I needed to use that Ultimate license on the "new" refurb desktop. So my "downgrade ultimate to home premium" search brought me here, amongst other places.

I used a registry solution explained here and in several other places, but I made the changes manually and without the use of a popular tool from a website called deviantart. I figured I was better off hacking the puter manually myself. I did however used it this way (notice upper & lower case matching the "Ultimate" entry format):

HKLM\Software\Microsot\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
EditionID "Ultimate" changed to "HomePremium"
ProductName "Windows 7 Ultimate" changed to "Windows 7 HomePremium"

For reference, I also used the following posting on tomshardware (Downgrading Win7 Pro to Home Premium - Downgrade - Windows 7), specially the response by aquasystems. I would've added this reply there but the thread was closed.

Then, I needed to do an "in-place repair upgrade." I tried using the wi... Read more

I have an HP Pavilion Laptop that originally had Vista installed on it, then it was upgraded to Windows 8. One day it would not boot. It would display a message that Windows was preparing to repair itself and then it would quickly flash a message that the PC ran into a problem and needs to reboot. Once it reboots, it would do the same thing again.

I backed up the data from the hard drive to an external using a Linux live CD and I ran some checks on the HDD. So the HDD appears not to be the source of the problem.

At this point I thought the best choice of action would be to install a fresh/clean copy of Windows 8, However, I am still stuck in the same loop. I turn the laptop on with the Window 8 disk inserted and press any key to boot from the DVD drive when prompted. I can hear the DVD drive spin up and then the Windows logo appears and the same message about running into a problem and needing to reboot appears.

I am really stumped by this one. Thank you in advance for any advice.

A:Unable to install Window 8 Professional, keeps rebooting

Update: I followed these instructions for optimizing your HDD for Windows re-installation and I get a BSOD everytime I try to boot from the CD.

Maybe a hardware problem???

My computer shut itself down and as it restarted it hung on the windows progress bar and reverted to a blue screen with the following message: Stop: 0X00000024 NTFS- File System Address BFFS78A2 base at BFEF 3000
Date stamp 3edebe95 NTFS.SYS. Nothing I have tried will reboot it. I will not do anything but the blue screen. I have virus protection and firewall. It will not even boot from the Windows 2000 CD to check for errors or even reformat.

I have done a lot of reading...tried a few things...no virus or issue that I can determine..EMISOFT and SuperAnti, system clean, basic task bar and start up review..nothing seems wrong. PC is very very clean from my point of view. It sound like it is trying to download something and sometimes I can get it to stop by rebooting. Almost think is has something to do with FIREFOX or an update of some type. I installed more RAM a few months ago and even adjusted the paging and all that...still happens. CPU goes to 100% when this happens which is most of the time..The PC however worked fine..It could be getting slower but not really..then again..I am so confused...any thoughts out there as to what I might be able to research and or do?

A:Window 7 Professional sounds like it is trying to downlaod something and slower

You should use the Windows Task Manager or better Process Explorer to check what is using the CPU at 100%

I forgot my administrator password and can only log into guest. When I log into I can't do anything because access is denied. Do I need to install the operating system again? Even booting in safe mode required a password for the administrator.

A:lost adminstrator password in window xp professional

Unless there is no password- you often see the password prompt box, but there is no password, so just try pressing the Enter key to log on.

It's not clear to me, whether you mean a personal user account at Admin level......or, the actual Administrator account. These are two different accounts.....

There is no other help except this from Microsoft, >> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305

If there actually was a typed password, and you have forgotten it, there is nothing we can help you with because that is a violation of our terms of use for this site. I have to Close your thread.

Hello.  I have many pictures is my photo gallery including scans, img and others.  Each item is assigned a number for example scan0001 and img001.  Lately pictures have been showing up in my photo gallery and are assigned numbers that start with B000...for example scan0001 is assigned a number such as B0001234.  Both the scan picture and the B000  picture remain in the photo gallery.  I have an external hard drive and thought that the B000 were backup numbers.  I have looked on google and asked the question about the B000 and have had no luck.  Can someone help.  Thank you.

I have searched on your forum for a fix to this problem but none of the fixes work so far. I have tried GMER (which says atapi.sys is suspicious) and MBAM (which gave me sdra64 problem before it crashed). They don't run for a complete scan as they crash.

Here are the symptoms:

BSOD loop (0x024 and 0x07E)
Debugging mode works to access XP.
Anti-Virus/Malware scans (GMER, MBAM) crash.
SDRA64.exe found, not removed.
Atapi.sys has suspicious modifications, I get google redirects too.

I have access to Windows 7 on a partition of the drive, so there isn't anything wrong with the drive itself (CHKDSK completed alright).

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance,

Haris F.

A:Windows XP Professional - BSOD 0x024 and 0x07E, GMER and MBAM both crash.

Now I tried to run Rkill as well as MBAM, but even debug mode is messed up. The error code is 0x07B now.

I bought a netbook a while back with Windows 7 Starter.

I had an extra upgrade key of 7 Home Premium from one of those 3 pack family upgrades so I upgraded the netbook and put the key in.

I want to reformat the netbook back to Windows 7 Starter and just use it's original Starter key it came with. Home Premium bogged it down too much.

My question is...

Is there a way I can reuse the upgrade key of 7 Home Premium on another computer or did I waste the license by putting it on the netbook?

Thank you in advance for your help,

Hi All,

I use Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. I want to open folders in command prompt from windows explorer without having me to navigate in the cmd window to my folder. After researching in google, I came to know that there is an option (Open Command Window Here) in the right-click menu to open command prompt windows quickly. However, when I right-click I do not see that option. Instead I see an option called ?cmd?. When I hold shift key and right click on this option I get an error message. See attached.

I tried to google this error in internet but couldn?t get any clues as to why this happens. Some sites suggested me to delete the "Extended" registry keys in the following nodes:

I tried to delete the ?Extended? key from the above registry nodes and restarted my laptop but didn?t help.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Open Command Window Here option not working in Windows 7 Professional

Hello Red Hunt, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The "Extended" key is for having to press Shift + right click instead of just right click.

If you like, see if using step 2 in the tutorial below may be able to restore "Open Command Window Here", and no longer having to press Shift.

Open Command Window Here - Add or Remove Shift + Right Click

Hope this helps,

A:window xp crash

We need more information. what kind of crash? Is there an error message? Can you boot into Safe Mode? If you want to backup your files, download and burn an Umbutu Live CD and copy your files off to a Flash Drive. If you can boot into safe mode you can do a System Restore to a time before this happened.
