I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: install firmware in Linux

@efueyo Basically, you can't -- which is why many of us retain dual-boot systems -- because most, if not all, of the system utilities provided by manufacturers run ONLY in Windows. HP distributes their utilities as compressed archives -- and the only tool I know of personally that can extract the components is 7-ZIP -- another Windows utility. If you CAN extract the components, you can see what they are, but most likely, the only executable parts are going to be MS Windows only.

I'm running a T440s with two type A02 Ultra Docks. My OS is Linux Mint (currently 18.3, shortly to be 19.3). I have one dock (manufactured 14/06) with out of date firmware that I'd like to update to see if it resolves a problem (flickering display when laptop reconnects -- I've been using a KVM switch with two laptops). The newer dock is a replacement which hasn't exhibited the problem. It may be a hardware fault but would like to try a firmware upgrade. How can I do this? (ie., without re-installing Windows just to run this) My laptop doesn't undock properly -- I get a blank screen on both laptop and monitor. I know of but haven't tried the dockd solution available from github; I'll wait until I've tried a newer Linux kernel first. It would be helpful to know from now on what minimum kernel release is required for docking station functionality to work.

Hello,

I'm running CentOS 7 on E7470, and a few of the devices aren't working, like smart card reader, fingerprint reader, etc. According to some sources, deploying the latest ControlVault firmware/drivers package may fix some of those.
The native installer is built for Windows, and I was wondering if it'd be possible to do the upgrade by either booting a Windows portable/live version and running the upgrade, or, copying the installer to a USB and doing an upgrade in the way it's done with BIOS upgrades on Linux?
Perhaps LVFS? (Although compiling that on CentOS 7 is not really straight forward)
Regards,Milos.

Here's another (risky?) idea: There's a Windows 10 VM running on top of libvirt/KVM, and I can do USB passthru of Broadcom 5880. Driver isn't applied by default, so I'm tempted to try how wrong might things go if I were to install ControlVault2 firmware and drivers for these devices as they're passed thru to the VM.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I am running Ubuntu 19.10 on a recently-purchased X1 Extreme gen 2. The installed BIOS version is 1.26. I looked in the Drivers & Software page and I see that 1.27 was released on 29 October. However, running `fwupdmgr --get-updates` says "No upgrades for 20QVCTO1WW System Firmware, current is 0.1.26: 0.1.23=older, 0.1.23=older". How long does it usually take for firmware updates to be available via fwupdmgr? Should I manually update? I downloaded the BIOS Update Utility for Linux and the README. The directions in the README are clear, but nowhere do I see the 20QVCTO1WW ID mentioned above and want to make sure that I have the correct files. The BIOS Update Utility download is called `n2oul06w.zip` and contains 3 CAB files: N2OET40P.cab, N2OET40W.cab and N2OHT32W.cab. Is this the right file? Which one should I apply? Thanks in advance,-Mario.

Hi, I'm trying (unsuccesfully) to apply the latest firmware upgrade (1.18) to my T470p laptop, using the only OS I have: Ubuntu 18.04. I tried downloading the CD ISO (r0fuj18wd.iso), flashing it to a USB pen, but the laptop refuses to reboot from there.Further notes:-) from BIOS: I restored defaults, and I also secure boot; my current firmware is 1.17-) I tried both flashing the .iso directly to the USB flash (that shows up as /dev/sda), using dd or other USB flashing tools (even unetbootin from a Windows laptop), and also to create a FAT32 or FAT16 partition, then flash into /dev/sda1, setting also the bootable flag on the partition with fdiskThe result has consistently been the same: when I reboot, after selecting boot menu and temporary boot device, I choose the USB drive, but it doesn't boot anything from there. On a related note, when I insert the USB disk, I see an empty disk labelled "R0FET44U".Is there anyone who succesfully managed to install such a firmware upgrade from Linux and might have a useful hint ? Thanks!

Hello, maybe someone can help me out with the problem I have upgrading the firmware of my T470s. The installed version is 1.11 (from June 2017, I think.). It runs archlinux and is no dual boot system i.e. there is no windows version on it anymore. I have learned that one of the usual ways to update is using the tool fwupdmgr. When I run the tool with "fwupdmgr update", the output is "No releases found for device: Not compatible with firmware version 0.1.11, requires >= 0.1.14" Maybe it is possible to install the current system firmware (which is 1.33) directly with "fwupdmgr install <xyz>.cab", but I don't dare to do so because I don't want to brick the hardware. So my question is: Can this be done savely and if not, is there any other way to upgrade the firmware without using windows? Thanks and kind regards

There is a new firmware release (FWNV15) for the NVMe SSD of the X1 Carbon 5th. I'm wondering if there is a way to perform the upgrade on a machine with no Windows installed on the internal SSD?

I've installed Ubuntu on the NVMe SSD and have a external USB Drive with Windows 10.

I tried to run the Firmware Update Utility on the "external" Windows 10 but no luck so far. Windows reboots and after it's up again the utility just shows some generic error message.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a booteable ISO.

Any recommendations on how to upgrade the firmware with my setup?

A:Upgrade NVMe SSD firmware to FWNV15 (X1 Carbon 5th Gen) on Linux

The upgrade utility sometimes fails before it reboots windows with a message like "can't initializie linux system". So I investigated further and found that the updater in fact is an ELF binary  $ file fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.8.13, not stripped Which also seems to be pretty easy to use: $ ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff
PROGRESS --- start firmware update.
Usage ./fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff <Model> <Serial> <Firmware> [Option]
Model : Drive Model Name.(Mandatory)
Serial : Drive Serial Number.(Mandatory)
Firmware : Firmware Image file path.(Mandatory)
Option : Additional Option string starts with `-'.(Optional)
PROGRESS --- completed with status(8). And the necessary info which firmware to use is in a file called fwwinsd.pro: $ cat fwwinsd.pro
"THNSF5512GPUK TO","5KLA5102","5KLA5104","TINYCORE","fwupdater_i686_Win10_LPMoff","5KLA5104_NVME.sig","L","TOSHIBA"

The linux version of the latest BIOS/ECP firmware (1.44/1.18) for the X1 Carbon 4th gen (type 20FB and 20FC) and X1 Yoga 1st gen (types 20FQ, 20FR) was released Aug 2 (n1ful37w.zip) https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/de/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Direct link: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1ful37w.zip That .zip file contains two .cab files, N1FET70W.cab and N1FHT35W.cab, for the BIOS and ECP respectively. Updating the BIOS in linux for my X1 Carbon 20FB worked fine for me with fwupdmgr, but failed for the ECP. This was because the metadata for the ECP update has a typo. Inside the N1FHT35W.cab file is a firmware.metainfo.xml, with a GUID of: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb7bc72d96b9c3 This is incorrect. It's missing a dash, and should read: 4c2e5b5c-6467-43af-afeb-7bc72d96b9c3 Modifying this file within the .cab (or extracting it and generating a new .cab) and then flashing that with fwupdmgr fixed the problem. I've attached the modified .cab file (nested in a .zip file for upload). You can check yourself that the only thing that's changed is the GUID line in the .xml file. This typo should be fixed in the source by Lenovo and reuploaded as perhaps a rev 2 for n1ful37w.zip . Hopefully this hasn't happened for any other firmware update files.

I have two hard disks, hda = 120gb and hdb = 40gb. I want to install two LINUX operating systems. I would like to have the option of booting into the operating system of my choice at boot time. I am currently running Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg)
Linux 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 on hda. When I try to install the 2nd system on hdb the boot loader overwrites the MBR on hda. I am lost as to how to get around this. I am not currently nor do I plan to run Windows. I am reading info pages on Grub and Parted, but I feel a little overwhelmed and could use a little guidence. I would appreciate any help to get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks,

A:2nd linux install overwrites MBR of 1st linux install

What version are you installing as the second Linux?

All Linux installs ask you where to install the bootloader. You may have to choose some advanced install method if it doesn't for you.

Just tell it not to install a bootloader at all or don't put in the hda MBR. It usually gives you a choice between the MBR and the Linux parition IIRC. Just put the second instance onto the new Linux partition.

After that edit the original bootloader's configuration so you can boot the second Linux instance.

You could also use a common boot partition for both of your Linux installs but that would take some more tinkering.

Hello, we are trying to update Thunderbolt firmware on one of my colleague's Lenovo P50 since it does not recognise Akitio external PCIe box (his NVM version is 16). We updated all the drivers including BIOS. We updated the Thunderbolt Software. But we cannot update the Thunderbolt firmware. We downloaded this: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/be/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... namely: n1etf08w.exe We tried to install it as administrator, but it gives an error, something along the lines of: "PM driver is old, please update the PM driver first.". We updated the Power Management driver: https://support.lenovo.com/be/en/downloads/ds032258 And we can see in device manager that it is currently the latest version. But Thunderbolt firmware still does not install giving the same error saying that PM driver is old. Is PM driver the Power Management driver or something else? What might be the problem?

- If still no joy, try letting the Magician download the firmware. Verify it downloaded the correct version.

... Or maybe it's the driver I can't install. (Still not sure what the difference is.)

I've got Windows XP SP2 and a Canon FB630U scanner that someone passed along to me. I downloaded the driver and followed the install new hardware wizard accordingly. But when I got to the end, the wizard reported that it couldn't install the driver. A Windows pop-up balloon said that maybe the device wasn't working.

The friend who passed it on to me said that he couldn't use it anymore on his Mac because the OS was too advanced now and Canon hadn't updated for it. Is it possible that I've got the same issue with XP? I found a 2001 posting on this site for the FB630U, so I guess it's pretty archaic by now.

A:Solved: Canon Scanner - Can't Install Firmware

Have you gone here and downloaded the Windows 2000/XP software / drivers? http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...portDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=6853 You have to click the Driver tab.

You must turn off pop-up blockers like Google toolbar to see the download window.

FYI

In computing, firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device. It is often provided on flash ROMs or as a binary image file that can be uploaded onto existing hardware by a user.

A device driver, or software driver is any computer program that allows other programs to interact with a computer hardware device, or else to work as if they are interacting with a particular device.

I am having a perplexing issue after doing a clean install of Windows 8 on a 256GB SSD where I can not get into the "UEFI Firmware Settings" Tile in Advanced Options. Basically, when trying to enter the EFI/BIOS via: Settings in Charms / PC Settings / General / Advanced Startup / Restart Now / Troubleshoot / Advanced optons I do not see the "UEFI Firmware Settings" tile to get into the UEFI/BIOS!

My machine (which only has (1) hard drive) is an Asus N56VZ and came pre-installed with Windows 8 on the factory 750GB 7200rpm HDD. I cleanly reinstalled the OS on to a new 256GB SSD via an OEM copy on a disc and all seemed basically OK except that sometimes when getting to the Login screen it would freeze and the cursor would not be flashing, I could not enter my password nor shut down via the power icon on the bottom left of the screen. I would then have to hold down the power button to shut off the machine. This freezing of the login screen would be intermitent where most of the time I could enter my password but maybe 20% or so of the time I could not log in.

Due to that bug I decided to securely erase the SSD and once again reinstall Windows 8 and now I have this issue where in the Advanced Options menu there is only (5) tiles/options present and not the usual (6) as the "UEFI Firmware Settings" functionality is now missing!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
...Glenn

I'm running Linux on a Thinkpad T440p. To do Intel AMT firmware update to address Intel AMT vulnerability CVE-2017-5689 (or INTEL-SA-00075) https://support.lenovo.com/ch/en/product_security/len-14963 do I have to install Windows? The vulnerability is well described here: https://libreboot.org/faq.html#intelme I've already used the Linux tool Intel provided to "unprovision" AMT https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26799/INTEL-SA-00075-Linux-Detection-and-Mitigation-Tools but Intel says that merely mitigates this critical vulnerability. Does this Windows tool do more than merely mitigate? https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26755/INTEL-SA-00075-Detection-and-Mitigation-Tool I see a chipset firmware update: Intel Management Engine Firmware 9.1 for Windows 10 (64-bit), 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad T440p, T540p, W540, W541 / version 9.1.41.3024 / date 2017/05/17 here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ch/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-... So does that mean I have to install Windows to run this critical firmware update? Thanks.

Hi all,
I'm more curious than anything, for the device is running Windows 10 just fine, but do you have to first install Bios update A17 prior to A19? I couldn't get A19 to install. Thanks.

A:D630: Bios firmware update fails to install

It's more likely you're going to need to build a bootable flash drive with an earlier version of Windows to get the flash to work -- Windows 10 is not supported on this model, so it's very likely the flash installer won't run under 10 regardless of which version you're trying to flash.
Rufus is one easy way to make a bootable flash drive that will allow the flash to work.

Hi, I'm trying to install "Intel Management Engine 11.8 Firmware Update" (specifically the newest version - 11.8.50.3425) but as you can see in the image attached it stucks on "Checking firmware parameters..."  I've tried to install it from the "Levnovo Vantage win10 App" and even directly from the Lenovo's support website (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds112240) but it keeps stucking in the same spot :/ What can I do? * If any other info is relevant tell me I'll appreciate any help, thanks ahead

Hi,
(tl;dr) Background.
This all started with a fight on malware in W7 that I've lost. I realize that immunodeficiency of Windows is what we pay for convenience. Ability of malware to break out of vmware box was a nasty surprise, given that both guest and host are fully patched windows 7 with guest "protected" by ZoneAlarm av+fw and host "protected" by avast+windows firewall. Naive attempts to recover w7 from .img disk clone (storred on an offline disk) failed as well. The images got infected while I was changing the boot settings in bios. This was a rough awakening. To stop loss I "boot and nuked" and formatted all affected disks to ext4, installed Ubuntu and vmware with windows 7 guest on.

The problem.
Vmware flawlessly installed W7 guest on Ubuntu host from a genuine W7 installation disk. However, when I use the same disk to install W7 on bare metal it gets stuck at the first user input screen. Both keyboard and mouse are frozen.

Troubleshooting attempts.
Changing mouse/keyboard, hdd, RAM, video card did not solve the problem. Yes, I've formatted hdd to fat32 and ntfs, but that didn't help either. Also, afaik if windows can't find any suitable media it does not freeze at the first screen. Instead, it says "no suitable hardware found, please add a driver". I am heaving a problem way upstream. I had similar behavior when I was fighting virus, but I thought I cleaned it up by creating a new file tables (ms-dos) already.
