Keyboard And Mouse Dead!! College Student! Please Help!

Q: Keyboard And Mouse Dead!! College Student! Please Help!

Hello all,

The problem started when I rebooted my computer to install some software to let me access the college's wi-fi. When my computer turned back on I had absolutely no control from the built in keyboard or mouse (I am using a lenovo x60s on Vista Ultimate with the red button mouse). The only way I am able to use my computer (which otherwise works just fine btw) is by plugging in an external mouse and keyboard into the USB. I have uninstalled all of my college's software so I don't think that is the problem. WHAT SHOULD I DO, MIDTERMS ARE COMING UP!!!!!

Preferred Solution: Keyboard And Mouse Dead!! College Student! Please Help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Keyboard And Mouse Dead!! College Student! Please Help!

Try uninstalling the mice and keyboards from Device manager and rebooting for re-detection.

OK my bro has asked me to find him another laptop. I know the hardware well enough but not the brands.
I told him to buy one a little over a year ago, because it had an APU and very casual gaming was a request, but not anymore. Anyway it was an HP pavilion and it has some serious bloody heat problems and it hasent even been abused, which makes me as mad as it makes him.

So, we need a 15.6" laptop with a minimum of 4GB ram and a nicer processor, dual core is minimum and really all thats required. would prefer $450-550, which should be plenty for what this is for- school work and watching netflix/youtube/etc etc.

Most importantly is it needs to LAST. its not going to get thrown around or be running at 100% all the time. so it needs to last years (notice the plural). the fan should NOT be maxing out all the time.

I havent been someone to ask for forum feedback for PC hardware for years, but honestly laptop quality is constantly fluctuating and im tired of spending hours looking into them..
PS. I am NOT buying another HP.

Thanks for your help!

A:Laptop for college student

I normally avoid HP laptops off and on because of that very issue. Now its not the case with all their models (seems to me that most come from the 17 inch models in my experience). If you want a good laptop for light gaming and schoolwork/youtube and junk, here are my recommendations at that price point:

Lenovo G505s $524
Lenovo has good build quality, down side is they tend to cost a bit more than other brands and this one has a 768p screen.

Asus X550LB Notebook (Open Box Special) $559
Asus is also one of good build quality. This is an open box special of course as the regular price is a bit higher than this but it comes with the normal warranty and would be one of the best choices in terms of performance.

Those are my two best recommendations as far as performance to price is concerned. If you want to go cheaper I would drop to an A8 processor as that will drop the price a bit down. I normally stick with Lenovo, Asus, and MSI when it comes to laptops (Sager as well but they are custom) and thats where I normally run to with laptop needs. HP is fine on the smaller platform for some reason its just the big notebooks that have poor cooling designs (Sounds stupid no matter how I think of it, but my sister has a small new HP notebook with an A10 and 15.6 screen which runs very cool while my friend has a 17inch with an A10 and it runs hot. Wrap your head around that).

Hi, My older syster is needing a laptop for college, she's going to be a Biology major, and needs to write reports, and do basic online searching for hacks, and cheats for her tests, . As I search, I only see new computers with windows Vista on them, and I can tell from their specs, no matter how much you strip vista, it is not going to run well at all.

But I'm also needing some advice on whats the most important features for a laptop for a college student. I know DVD-R/RWs are a must, and atleast 1/2 Gig of Ram is important, but what about integrated/non-integrated Video cards, and Wifi capabilities?

A:Looking For A Laptop For A College Student With Xp On It.

From what you describe she needs a about a 1ghz computer with 512MB of RAM with a 20gb hard drive should do. Windows XP or even Windows 2000 Pro. That will run about $200? delivered on eBay. This is all on the assumption that you are looking for a deal.
If not then I would go to Dell or Toshiba and look at what they have on their sites. I have had 4 Toshiba notebooks and in my opinion they are bullet proof. I still have and use a P-II 300 Toshiba 2535CDS that is 8 years old. I still use it several times a week.
If she plans on packing it to class try and find a 12" sub-note and a docking station for the house\dorm. If not look at one of the "Desktop replacements" forms. 17"+ screen, full size keyboard, and does not skimp on the power.
If you go new a DVD is a given, if not save her money and get a USB\Firewire external DVD-RW.

This is my second plea for help in a week, so I feel extremely helpless, but I can't figure this out, and my university's IT desk is also apparently clueless about Thunderbird. So, our email system just switched over from Gmail to Office365, and this means, in order to get to my email, I either have to navigae through the student website to the Office365 site, to the online Outlook app, which is just a pain; OR it means using an email client - and I outright refused to use Outlook. So I set up Thunderbird, and I got my emails in my inbox, but when I try to send them, it refuses to send through any server. I tried the default SMTP server, I tried our server (outlook.office365.com), tried both with different port numbers, and neither will work.
When I called the IT desk, the guy said that if I had SSL on (which I do) I shouldn't have to worry about SMTP. And I have it set up on my phone through an exchange account where I do indeed not have to worry. So I tried downloading the ExQuilla extension. That didn't work either. So, in sumation, I am completely dubfounded, and I have no idea what to do. Any help that anybody would be willing to give me would be GREATLY appreciated, considering the fact that I can only have any academic communication through this email.
tl;dr - My school email, which is run through Office365, won't play nice with Thunderbird, and I can't figure out why.
Running: Thunderbird 31.0

A:Help a college student with Thunderbird?

Hi zekethegypsy and to BleepingComputer!I set up my college email in Thunderbird just a few weeks ago. I encountered some issues, but (fortunately) my school provided a walkthrough of how to set it up. I've done some research on Office365 accounts, and this is what I think you should try...Click the Menu button, select Options, select Account Settings. At the bottom, click Account Actions, select Add Mail Account. Enter your name, school email address (probably name@<university>.edu), and your Password.Note: my school requires users to create a different password for accessing their accounts through clients (for example, Thunderbird, the gmail apps, etc.). If you haven't searched your school's tech support webpage for details, you should. If you give me a link or school name, I may be able to provide a second look.Ensure that the Remember password box is checked and click ContinueThunderbird will then try to automatically detect the necessary server settings. It'll probably be unsuccessful in this scenario. Use the following settings:EDIT: I suppose you can disregard the Incoming settings, since you've already been able to receive emails.IncomingIMAPServer hostname: outlook.office365.comPort: 993 (if this doesn't work, try Auto)SSL: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS (if the first doesn't work, try the second)Authentication: Normal passwordUsername: name@<university>.eduOutgoingSMTPServer hostname: outlook.office365.comPort: 587 or 465 or AutoSSL: STARTTLS or SSL/TLS (if the fi... Hello, i am a Virtual Technology and Design student, so my laptop is my life and my career. Recently while browsing the internet, the moment a page loaded i get a popup from AVG saying that there is a infected file detected, but offers no solution. I assume this means it is fixed, and continue on with my day. But my browser started to randomly open up new tabs or redirect me to when i click on a link. It will send me to some no-name search engine for about a second, and then re-redirect me to a completely random site, however on some occasions it has to do with what i was looking at. Ran Malwarebytes, got one item, took it off, and the problem persists. AVG picks nothing up, and i honestly dont feel like using the trial and error method for every AV out there until hopefully one works. When i try to run the GMER program in your tutorial, my laptop instantly resets the moment i click the scan button, so i dont have that information for you sadly. However, in the event viewer, i found this under the system log which i think may have been the event giving me the virus:

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer WHITEBABY that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{6700717A-220B-4D92-83C2-213E1C58. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and i will attach the DDS file if that helps at all. Running Vista 32 bit service pack 1. THANK YOURead more

A:Laptop for college student (Under $300)

Pretty much any current hardware can handle basic "office" apps. It just becomes a matter of finding a model that fits your budget.

Make note of any options or features that are necessary, then go to the local stores and see what's available. It's simply a matter of brand preference, budget, and warranty.

I have been tasked with a group project to plan a network for my small college that includes three buildings. We have been basically thrown to the wolves and taught only theory. Our instructor told us to plan separate wired, wireless and fiber network for the same three buildings. We have researched the cabling needs for the wired network, but I need help with the number and what type of servers, do I need a server in each building, number and types of switches, etc. Building A has approximately 400 clients, Building B has 50 clients and Building C has 50 clients. My instructor wants us to do all the research via web, forums and contacting commercial sales departments. Commercial basically won't help you when they find out you are students, and I am having trouble finding info recommending servers and switches. I realize this is a lot but any information to get us started would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm hearing ads on my computer with no programs running. I have Trend Micro with Spyware Protection but something is blocking it from updating. I cannot access some sites because I apparently have 'Troj/Rustok-N'. I also get two missing .dll file errors on startup.

I brought the laptop to Geek Squad and they said it would be 200+ bucks for them to look at it. I'm a college student and don't have that kind of cash. I can't wipe my computer because it has all of my schoolwork on it. I'm an art major and a fast, functional computer is very important to what I do.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Hello and welcome.. As you have no HJT log posted in the HJT fourum. I am moving this to the Am I Infected forum to see if we can get this fixed. Some types of malware will disable MBAM (MalwareBytes) and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first***Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.***Open up command prompt, type in following commands: XP >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and select "Run". Type cmd into the Run box and click "OK".Vista >> click the Start menu at the lower-left of your computer's desktop and Type cmd in the search box.regsvr32 mbamext.dllregsvr32 ssubtmr6.dll regsvr32 vbalsgrid6.ocxregsvr32 zlib.dll ****If you cannot use the Internet, you will need access to another computer that has a connection. From there save mbam-setup.exe... So I recently came across this deal to get Windows 7 for college students for $30 with a valid .edu email, which sounds like a good deal.

My question is that upon checking out it says this for the product in my shopping cart.

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade 32 Bit Disk Kit: Only $13 - Shipping Included

Does upgrade mean that I can't do a fresh install off of this version of windows 7 because it only says upgrade? I would be upgrading from Windows XP to windows 7, which I think requires a fresh install of windows 7 anyways. Just want to make sure I'm not buying something i can't use.

A:College student Windows 7 $30?

Yes it the correct version you will get a D/L for the $30 the extra $13 is if you want the Disk mailed.

From XP you will need to do the Custom(full reinstall) so be prepared to reinstall all your programs.

Run the upgrade adviser first to see if you'll have any issues> http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...e-advisor.aspx

Fantastic, I have been running wn2k with no down time 4 a year and just when I need most, silly me decides to find out why some of those extra "helpful" net/media buttons on my cheap keyboard by asking 2K for the appropriate driver.

It warns me but I say OK and restart and POOF! no mouse or keyboard. Locked out. No kersor and I cant even press caps locked to show lite. (both work fine in my 2nd partition under 98)

The driver I picked was just the Micsoft enhanced (similar) kB I think.

Have tried Safe mode, Last Settings saved, Nope!

Tried dif keyboard, as you do, and no change.

Have read a couple of dif posts some saying remove Bios Battery for 5mins, others saying boot in DOS and bla bla...Im no good in DOS. (willing to keep trying)

Alot of the posts also say Logitec mouse was problem but dont have 1.

Can anyone direct me to something they may remember in this field.

Or can someone explain how I might fix using 98???????

Much appriciated, urgent work to finish.

Hello. Thanks in advance for your expertise.

Recently my mouse and keyboard have stopped working. I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Dell Dimension machine. When I reboot the machine (using the button on the PC) it loads up and gets me to the user selection screen but I can't do anything at all. Here are a few notes that should help:

I have tried hooking up multiple keyboards and mouses. None work (so I know it's not an issue with them as they work fine on my laptop)
I only have USB connections, no PS2 connections on my PC at all so I can't try a PS2 Mouse or Keyboard
I have tried ONLY plugging in the mouse or ONLY the keyboard and neither work
The Optical mouse lights up for about ten seconds then turns off if I unplug it and plug it back in. Even with the optical light on, the mouse doesn't move on the screen.
While loading, at the Dell screen where it says "Press F2 to enter Setup" the keyboard still doesn't work. So I can't get into BIOS nor can I start the machine in safe mode.

So here are my questions:

What do I do about this?
Can I install either new USB inputs or PS2 inputs without being able to use a mouse or keyboard or even load Windows (can't get past user/login screen)?
If I need to reload Windows, how do I get the data off of my harddrive?

THanks again,

A:Dead Mouse and Keyboard - help

Reset the Bios from the Motherboard

Power cord out
Hold in the ON button for 30 secs, dispersing internal power
Side cover off (who knows, some of the Dell's are hard to work this simple part out)
Take out (remove) the button battery (there's a small clip top side)
Locate the reset jumper, and move it to pins 2 and 3 (it's probably in pins 1 and 2 at the moment)
Wait 10 secs (no need really, but good time to rest )

Then put the jumper back (ie to pins 1 and 2)
Put the cmos round button battery back in
Put the power cord back in (and everything else)
Wha La :grinthumb

I have a problem. Its all fine during POST, no "keyboard not detected" msg

appearing, but I cant press delete or any other keys to get into BIOS setup.

Keyboard's "Num Lock" lights do not flash. Windows will load but both the keyboard and mouse is dead. Tried other keyboard with the same result. tried the keyboard on another PC - works fine.

Previously the windows had a pci.sys error - "pci.sys not found." ive transported the HD to another PC and reformats the HD, and installs a fresh WINXP on it. Windows now loads fine on the new and old PC, but keyboard and mouse is dead on the old PC.

Have a USB adapter for keyboard but same result. tried the USB ports, both 2 ports on back of PC, and 2 other ports on casing (front). So i guess shouldnt be a problem with the ports, because ive just changed the casing to new and the front ports are fresh, never been used.

System details:
AMD duron 750MHz
mobo EPOX EP-8KTA2
PS2 keyboard with USB adapter.
ps2 mouse.

some guy suggested flashing the BIOS, but i do know how to that when i cant get my keyboard and mouse to work.

maybe, and just maybe, my PS2 keyboard and PS2 mouse ports are broken and the USB keyboard setting in BIOS is not enabled. then how?

any takers?

I am the Mom of a College Freshman who is purchasing her her first laptop (along with graduation money of course). She is eventually majoring in Photography but for the first few years will only new it for school work, surfing etc. She will also need to use some Photo editing software, although which is compatible with Vista at this time I don't know. I will need to buy "out of the box" as I am not technical and can't do any add-ons/upgrades myself.

Looking for guidance on purchase type; I use Vista at work so know I need to get her more RAM then I have. I have been told to try to get 2MG rather then 1 since Vista is such a memory hog, and also to avoid Turion due to processing speed. I am just a lowly user so looking for some helpful suggestions on what spec's, brands etc I should be looking for. I would love to try an come in around $800 if possible and have something that will last for a while and be carted back and forth........

My daughter is a college student so we bought her a S7-392-9890 ultralight laptop a few years ago.  It had problems with the battery dying and we sent it.  It was memory wiped and the orignal operating system reloaded on it.   The problem started happening again a few months later and it was sent to Level 2 diagnostic and service and it was determined to be a board problem all along and finally it got repaired without wiping it this time.   Here is the current problem, the screws in the bottom of the computer are falling out where they were loosened and replaced for the repair.  She has lost 2 of them and needs new ones.  Because she is a college student, she needs this daily and cannot send it in to Temple Texas to have 2 little screws put in.  It is used every day for both classroom work and also homework.  The turn around time on a repair like this is around 3 weeks.   All we need is two screws.  Right now it is being held together with duct tape.   Can someone tell me where to get two screws that will fit the bottom of this computer without having to send it in for a repair.  This is rediculous. Thank you for any help.

Long story short I clicked on an email link and ended up enabling the Anitivirus 8, AV8, malware to invade my computer. It took over my explorer.exe and a zillion other things. Ended up booting in safe mode and using task manager to navigate to the internet where I found some previous help on this site.

What I did do, might not have been correct. Out of worry, I read a thread previously solved by a gentlemen on here who had the same AV8 virus. They gave links to the ComboFix which is what I downloaded and installed. It ran just like the guy said it would in the posts. Upon the 3rd start-up my computer was running better. But while ComboFix was in a stage 4 of its scan the computer blue screened and said "windows is shutting down to avoid damage".

When I restarted the system seemed to be fine but my internet explorer and firefox had some sort of redirect trojan that kept giving me a "www.antimalwarelist.com redirect when I tried to go to a site. I looked for all the AV8/Antivirus8 files and Combo Fix had rid my PC of them

So I scanned my computer with my AVG Free but it didn't go away even though threats were vaulted. I did a system restore...and that problem was solved.

However, my AVG still consistently finds Trojans in the System32 and Explorer.exe regions along with a few other random ones. Please help me get rid of these.

Are there any lights on the Computer at all (or even fan startup on Power supply

Other than checking the power source (ie have you tripped your circuit breaker)
It sounds as though the power supply unit inside your PC has died

One last option unplug the power cable
hold the PC power button in for 20 secs

Replg the power cord (firmly) in
Restart (well try)

A friend has a Gateway PC approx 5 yrs old running XP Home. It doesn't have any PS/2 ports or serial ports. It came with a keyboard where the USB mouse plugged into the USB keyboard.

When the computer is booted the keyboard & mouse are recognized. I can get into bios and the keyboard works. If I go to the safemode options screen the keyboard works to select options. If I boot from a CD the keyboard works to select options. But if I boot into safe mode (or any other available options) the keyboard and mouse are both dead at the login screen. I tried booting (from this same options screen) to a previous configuration that worked, but still no luck. Gateway tech support told him it's likely the motherboard and tried to sell him one for $400. I'm thinking drivers (maybe a virus...?) but can't get into windows without the keyboard & mouse. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I just installed Fedora core on the computer I built a few months ago. I did not try to boot into windows. The next day, I completely redid my room and moved my computer onto another wall. I booted it the day after and none of the inputs (PS/2, USB, FireWire) worked.
I pushed the power button, It started booting. It asked if I wanted to boot into windows or linux, I pushed the down arrow on my keyboard and nothing happened. Uh-Oh. It booted Windows by default and brought me to the Welcome screen. I looked at my mouse and was relieved to see its LED turn on. I clicked on my account, and logged in. (Thank God I don't have a password). I found that the keyboard still didn't work.
I looked on the back of the computer and saw that I was using a PS/2 keyboard. I proceded to plug in a USB keyboard, and it still didn't work. I unplugged the mouse and put the keyboard in its place. It still didn't work. I put the mouse back in, and the LED didn't come on.
I reset and put the keyboard in place of the mouse. I could then select options on the boot manager, but my mouse didn't work, and as soon as I unplugged the keyboard, the USB port stopped responding.

I have never, ever seen anything like this before. I tried cleaning the dust out of my computer (not much, I've only had it for about 3 months or so), and I still have the same problem. It sounds a little like a short, but even the ports in the PCI cards I have don't work. What's especially weird is that the monitor is working thr... Read more

Hi!First off, I truly appreciate everyone's help in advance. It is so kind of those with "computer knowledge" to take time to help out those of us who have NO idea what they are doing (like myself!) ;) My computer is running terribly. I'm a college student and if my computer keeps running this way I can foresee many, many hours spent in the library waiting to use the public computers...oh no! I seemed to have gotten one of those dreaded Google redirect viruses. I tried following clean up instructions and it may have been wiped out (I'm not sure, as in the past it has seemed to come and go). But my computer is a mess. I downloaded HiJack this and was wondering if someone could take a look at my log and give me input. Im also getting a message pop up when I first run it saying it cannot access the Host files. Im not sure what that means. Thank you (times a million!) If any other info is needed let me know. One day when i turned on my inspiron 530 computer from DELL (Windows Vista), the computer was telling me that something was very wrong with my computer. Before "Setup", it was saying that with my permission it would set itself back in time to a time when it was working properly. I didnt see any sign of error prior to this so i said no, and did so for the next few days. Then one day, i said yes. The computer was working well for the rest of the day.

The next day, i turned on the computer and the Monitor has no signal from the mother-board, the mouse was dead and so was the keybord. The fans in the box were spinning very fast and very loud. There were lights on in the mother-board and there seemes to be an alarm going off inside the box.

My questions are what happened and what can i do?

I send you this e-mail through an alternate computer.

Ok so here is the run-down of what's going on.. I just typed out paragraphs describing the situation but accidentally deleted it So here is my frustrated recount of it all.

My friend (a poor college student) recently came across a disk read error when booting his computer. Even though his BIOS detected his hard drive as a 160 gig Western Digital, it couldn't read from it. I took it upon myself to hook up his hard drive to my laptop through an external enclosure and windows explorer couldn't acces it for reading/writing duties. I ran some file recovery software on it and all that came up were various random windows-related files. I advised my friend that the hard drive was definitely shot, so I ordered him a new Samsung 160 gig considering I had found mixed reviews of the failed Western Digital hard drive online.

After the new one came in, I installed it into his laptop without a hitch. But, when I went to install Vista through my own Vista ultimate dvd, it would freeze about 70% along (the finalizing install phase)... he doesn't have his vista dvd from gateway. When I attempted install of XP, it won't even recognize a hard drive. Funny thing is, I tried installing Ubuntu it installs and run fine, but neither me nor him have experience with Linux systems. I even went as far as installing the new hard drive into my dell laptop and installing vista... which went fine. But once I swapped it back over into the gateway laptop the windows splash screen wou... Read more

I was cleaning and moving my pc, during which I disconnected many of the wires and cables to the pc. Now, for some reason, my mouse and keyboard don't work when I log into Media Center. I have two operating systems on my computer, the media center XP on one hard drive and XP Pro on another. The mouse and keyboard work fine in the XP Pro, and they work fine while selecting which operating system to use, but as soon as I log into Media Center, the indicator lights on both of them go out, and they stop working entirely. They are both connected via USB, but I've also tried connecting them both with a PS2 connection, and there is no change. The odd thing is that I don't even recieve any message that says there is no mouse or no keyboard connected, and unplugging and then plugging them in again also does nothing. I tried starting in safe-mode and from the last known good configuration, but neither of those has worked. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a really strange problem, after a while (1-2 minutes) Windows just seems to freeze, the monitor signal dies and so does the keyboard and mouse. This seems to be pretty much random and does not occur at a specific time. Safe mode works well without the problem. This problem occurs both during the installation and on the installed OS. I managed to install Windows using safe mode (multiple times). I have been running XP and Linux on the same machine for a long time without any problems.

I have tried to install it multiple (allot) times, using different CDs and USB memory, same result. Even different isos. The iso I'm using is from MSDNAA and it's CRC checked. I have removed all "extra" hardware, disabled BIOS integrated hardware and usb stuff. No luck. I only have 1 monitor connected so it's not a multiple monitor problem, even tried booth DVI connectors. Have installed all the latest updates and tried different nvidia drivers.

Hi Zodox
Please check if you have BSOD .dmp files. There are some users in this forum that are very good at analyzing them and tell what is happening. I would have guessed it is a driver problem (given the normal operation in safe mode), but you already said you updated them all. Have you used the Win7 x64 drivers?
Also, if you can load your system specs in your profile, that permits other users to accesss them directly, without having to refer to your Original Post. You can just click on "My system specs" on the left lower corner
