No audio from speakers or headsets

Q: No audio from speakers or headsets

I have a laptop running both windows 10 and ubuntu. The audio worked just fine but since yesterday I couldn't hear a thing on windows or ubuntu.. There is a red circle with a white 'X' on the speaker icon in the taskbar. When I hower my mouse over it, it says "No Audio Output Device is installed".
I tried to find solutions online but I couldn't solve the issue. I don't have the "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" option under Device Manager. Sound/ Playback gives the message "No audio devices are installed". I can't open the Realtek app. When I ran driver easy, it said that Realtek audio is unplugged.
Please do help me. I've been working on this for a while now and have had no luck. Any help is appreciated.Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: No audio from speakers or headsets

theodorebear,Click the link below to choose your computer model and then the OS you have installed. Download and install the chipset drivers first and reboot. You can then download and install the audio drivers and install them as well. Reboot the machine. Depending on the system Dell may not have Ubuntu drivers.

Hello everyone, lately I've been receiving issues with the audio coming out of the wrong place when im using my new headphones. I'm not sure if it could be a problem with skype because it only happens when im on a call with somebody.

So every time im in a call with someone on skype, the audio from the call stays in my headsets just fine and usual but everything else starts coming out from my speakers. This is especially annoying because my headsets are noise cancelling and i cannot hear the audio properly from the speakers anymore.

Also the headsets i am currently using are SteelSeries Siberia V2

A:Audio comes out of both headsets and speakers

Hi Electros,

Skype has it's own Audio section in the settings iirc, open Skype, find the audio settings and in there you can chose from a drop down menu which device you want for playback and mic.

Hi Everyone,

This forum has been fantastic for helping me with a virus issue, so hopefully, you all can help with an audio issue. I think I put this in the correct forum, if not please move.

I recently updated my nVidia graphics drivers, but somehow it messed up my audio as well. I have heard that this can happen for some strange reason. Before this issue, I had my audio coming through my 2 logitech desktop speakers and sub perfectly. Also, when I would plug in a USB Headset and Microphone the USB Port would stop any future audio going to my speakers, and instead, put them into the headset. I would typically be playing a game having the sound coming out of the speakers, but if I wanted to listen to a little tunes, I could plug in the headset and listen to some music but still have game sounds on the speakers. Now basically what the issue is, when I plug the headset into the front USB jack, I hear myself breathing (never did that before). In addition, the audio does not go to the headset on 1 of the 2 jacks. Also, now when I use the application Ventrilo, it will not recognize my headset.

It may help to provide what I have as far as hardware:

WinXP Home 32 bit
Intel Quad Core Q9300
ASUS P5Q PRO Turbo Mobo
Antec 900 Case (two USB in front)
EVGA GeForce GTX460

Not sure if there is anything else that would need to be provided. Also, I checked the device manager, and there are multiple instances of: nVidia HD Audio, so I am not too sure what that is all about. In f... Read more

The audio quality of our built-in Beats Audio speakers is very good. Quality of audio played through BlueTooth is fine. However, the quality of the audio played through any device connected via the audio jack is terrible. The sound comes through as though the speakers or headset have blown cones when they sound absolutely fine connected to other devices (mobile phone, tablet, other computer, etc.). We have ensure that our Realtek drivers are updated and have seen many other complaints about this with no definitive means of correcting it. Has anyone learned of a way to fix this audio problem or should we simply plan to never play audio through this laptop to any speakers or headphones connected via wire? Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

My laptop speakers were disabled when I plugged in and plugged out the headset. Now the sounds are audiable in headset but not from my laptop speakers.

Kindly suggest how to restore my laptop speakers?

A:Speakers disabled when I plugged in and out the headsets

Barring a problem with the headphone jack, after you unplugged the headphones, try reinstalling the device. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the device to highlight it, then click Uninstall (DO NOT Uninstall the drivers). Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. If this doesn't fix it, reinstall the PC vendor's sound drivers.

Earlier today I emerged from a bathroom break to find my headphones in the middle of the floor with the plug bent thanks to my dog. Now the strangest thing has happened: My speakers won't work. I know they're on; when I turn them up I can hear a hiss, but there's no other audio. There's no evidence to suggest my dog got to them and it's almost impossible for him to reach. What has happened? The speaker plug is in the computer rock solid. The only remote possibility I can think of is that the computer somehow didn't realize the headphones have left the audio jack, but looking around I have seen nothing to suggest that the headphones are still registering.

Does anybody know what has happened?

UPDATE: I got the headsets fixed. It seems my theory might be correct, as the PC does not notify me anymore when I plug them in or remove them.

A:My headsets are broken, so my speakers don't work?

Were the headphones plugged into the computer when the dog got to them? If so, my thought is that the thing the headphone plugs into may be damaged.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Is there a fix for getting my Logitech Premium Notebook Headset PN980445-0403 (goes behind the ear) to work with Ultimate? I need to be able to use it with my headset jack and a splitter with another headphone set. I also need to be able to use it with the splitter and some external speakers, preferably the Bose Monitors. The mic jack works with the Logitech headset (above).

I upgraded to Ultimate and suddenly these things do not work!

I need to be able to record through the mic with my headset on while someone else is listening through their headset or comfortably listening to speakers. (No external mixers, no subwoofers).

Wow thats quite an interesting setup. How is it that it doesnt work? Does the computer not sense anything plugged in? Or does it see it, but no audio?
Does the computer sees it, but the mic doesnt work?

You need to tell us HOW it doesnt work.

Are you using onboard audio (the one on your motherboard) or a sound card?
Try using each thing seperatly, such as jsut the speakers, and make sure that each thing works individually first.

So yesterday I was just installing PowerPoint, and watching some youtube videos meanwhile. Then suddenly I didn't hear any sound from the headset. I plugged it in and out and so on, nothing. I tried with another headset, nothing. I tried with headphones, nothing. I uinstalled PowerPoint to see if that was the problem, nope.
I had my speakers on and they worked fine. I plugged in my headset and then it I tried, but I only hear the speakers sound, not the headset.

Welcome to sevenforums, Vorbias.

Have you checked the volume control to ensure that when the headphones are plugged in it is set to a high volume? I had the same issue and making the volume control visible on the taskbar and then opening the "mixer" when I plugged in the headset and setting the volume up fixed it.

I have three audio devices on my pc (ATI HDMI, Via HD onboard and steelseries usb soundcard) and through all devices I only get audio out of the left channel. I have tried two pairs on headphones and my tv speakers all with the same results. I have looked at all the balancing end everything is set to even on both channels.

Windows 7 X64 ultimate
M4A78 PRO Mobo Via HD audio
Steel Series Usb SoundCard

A:Audio Only out of one channel (multiple headsets and audio devices)

As you have three devices, each one separately generates the sound. The only thing common would be the sound itself, such as a wav or mp3 file.

When you use the PC's sound chip (VIA HD) that is one hardware device and the wired on the motherboard output jacks. If you use a USB connected sound device then you are using that device to generate the sound and that device's physical jacks. If you use the ATI HDMI, most video cards have their own built in audio chip (unless this is an old video card that uses S/PDIF connection to the motherboard) and thus again everything separate for audio generation and connection.

One comment, if you have both the Via on board audio and the usb connected sound card enabled at the same time there can be conflicts and sound problems. Not the balance problem you have but there can be problems. If you want to use the VIA then physically disconnect the USB. If you want to use the USB, disable the on-board audio in the BIOS.

Hello. The Inspiron 7567 Setup and Specifications document calls it a "headset (headphone and microphone combo) port", but gives no actual specifications. All Dell laptops up to now have had the standard 3.5 mm jacks, so you should be safe using that as a reference. Get one from someplace that accepts returns.

I must say I'm a bit surprised that I can't seem to find a definitive answer as I would have thought they'd be plenty of people in my position.

I simply want to connect two bluetooth headsets (would they have to be identical?) to my laptop at the same time so that my wife and I can either listen to music or watch movies together.

I've seen a couple of answers on the web stating the Bluesoleil software will do it but they might be just saying that get me to buy the software. There also seems to be a device that you plug into the audio port (3.5mm) although not popular and that's not using the onboard Bluetooth chip.

Obviously this can be done using wired headsets but I just want wireless.

Thanks very much and hope you can help.

I have two monitors (one VGA and one HDMI ) to the CPU (new XPS 8700), but sound only comes out of the monitor speaker with the HDMI connection.  The other speaker does work and has been tested with a 3.5MM speaker cable.
The video card is NVIDA GTX 745.  In the audio set-up control panel from the NVIDIA, I disabled audio from the HDMI thinking that I could then run 3.5MM cable on a Y splitter to the audio out port and by-pass the HDMI cable.  I tried every port and either experienced no sound or sound in one or the other speaker.
I realize these speakers are not the best and I am fine with them.  I like the clean clutter desktop look.
Can anyone help me to get both of these monitor speakers working?

I'm using a Packard Bell laptop, Windows Vista and a Realtek sound card.

I've searched a lot to find how to NOT mute my laptop speakers when I insert something in the audio-out-jack.

The next threads say it's not possible by the hardware:

Lenovo Yoga 3 11 - model 80J8:  out of warrantyI have done several searches and it seems there is a fairly common problem with some Yoga machines and audio.  All of a sudden a few months ago, the internal speakers went silent.  I did not notice it because I don't use it much for streaming audio, but when I do, I connect it to external speakers.  Audio to an external source functions fine, but internal speakers are silent.  Control panel and Device Manager show speakers functioning properly.I have read previous postings back to 2015 and it seems there is no real Lenovo reply or fix for this problem.  I have already tried to update the Realtek driver and that had no effect.  I am not willing to restore to factory default, since this machine shipped with Windows 8 and I upgraded to Windows 10 a few years ago.  The audio worked fine after the Windows 10 upgrade.  Respectfully, please only respond if you have factual data, rather than speculation.  This problem is well documented in the forums and elsewhere, but I have yet to find something concrete.I thought it may help to add a thread on the subject, as I expect others with the problem are frustrated, especially since there does not seem to be a formal response from Lenovo (that I can find)..  Thank you in advance!

Hi, hope you guys can help/guide me out.

So I receive a gift a couple of months ago, but did not have the chance to test it until now.

I have a set of audio speakers+sub-woofer, if you take a look at the pics (specially the back.jpg) the speakers are connected through a RCA cable, and where says input its a 3.5mm cable that goes into the computer (speakers output)

Now when I connected them to the PC, the sub-woofer and right speakers works fine, but the left is not producing audio at all. I find out that both speakers are working fine if I connected them in the red output/R, seems the left one is not working. At first I thought it was config of my PC I did download the latest drivers from Realtek Website, I tried the ones that comes from the DVD/Motherboard (ASROCK H81M-HDS) and same issue. I tried multiple settings from the audio devices (5.1 surround, quadraphonic, stereo) but no success.

Finally what I did is that I connected the system to my Galaxy S3 smartphone and another audio system as well and I have the same issue, no audio coming from the output Left/White, Subwoofer is working fine, and output/Red(Right) is working fine. I'm not sure if its due to the fact that system receives the signal from a 3.5mm cable and then has to send it through 3 outputs (L/R RCA speakers and the subwoofer)

What I'm trying to find out is, if this something related to the audio system itself, or does the PC and S3 need a configuration?
In case is something related (hardware) of the a... Read more

A:Audio 2.1 Speakers+Subwoofer, one speaker not outputting audio

As the speakers do the same thing on two different systems it says there is a problem with the speaker system. I see RCA connectors on the rear for the two speakers. Switch the connections (connect the right speaker to the Left jack and the left speaker to the right jack) and see if it follows the speaker or if its the Left output from the speaker base. That will isolate where the problem is. If its the speaker base unit, the problem could be the cable that connects to the PC or it could be an internal amplifier problem. However, in either case if the speaker system is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer for warranty assistance.

In most cases these are not made to be repaired, but I see screws holding the back on, the base unit, and you may be able to get into the electronics. However, without a schematic you are probably not going to find any problems.

Hi all,

I'd be grateful for any advice to my problem....

Last month I bought a new PC, a Dell XPS 8500 with an Intel Core i7-3770 processor. The PC has onboard audio (Realtek High Definition Audio).

I didn't buy new speakers as I have a perfectly usable set of Creative 6.1 speakers.

My problem is that although my computer plays Windows event sounds through all the speakers, applications such as iTunes only emit sound through the front pair.

I have googled the problem and as a result have configured the Realtek to use 7.1 audio but without the side pair.

Also, I have disabled the Realtek driver and have reloaded by asking Windows to select the best available.

But still the problem persists.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

A:No audio except front speakers (Dell, Realtek Audio)

First, for proper operation you must use the Dell supplied sound driver. Non-Dell will either not work or install or will not work properly, and that includes the basic function Windows installed HD Audio Codec.

6.1 is an oddball speaker configuration for current technology systems, its either 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1.

I used to do a lot of support on the Dell users forum (community) and recall that certain applications will only play audio through "stereo" speakers only. My experience on the Dell forum (I had over 37,000 posts and am still registered) also is the reason I note the Dell supplied sound driver.

You could also post on the Dell community Desktop hardware section and one of the user experts there may have more suggestions.

A:no audio speakers but audio from earphones

Have a thorough read of your mobo manual and you will easily see the problem.

You will notice there is audio in and out for each channel and that the default setting is the in and out jumpered together for each channel in order for the back panel to work.

Some front panel audio sockets are switched so that the speakers plugged into the back will shut off when a headphone is plugged into the front, cheaper ones are not switched.

You will probably need to make or buy 2 Y pieces to allow everything to work properly.

A:Audio Speakers

Check your sound settings. Are you enabled for all 4 speakers? Use the Test button to see if you get sound from all 4.

Also, it will depend what you play. If the music is not in the correct format, it won't play back in that format. If it was recorded in 2-speaker stereo, it will play back that way unless something else is emulated (faked).

One of the first things I noticed upon receiving the P72 is the odd design choice of placing two tiny internal stereo speakers a couple inches from each other on the right side of the laptop between the keyboard and the display.  The left channel is thus literally located on the right side of the laptop and effectively sounds more like a center channel.  You can also see this clearly in the circular grille speaker cutouts if you shine a flashlight on them.  Thus, the right speaker provides some right channel stereo effect and the left side of the laptop is pretty quiet.  Since the keyboard and trackpad are on the left, it's not really practical to crane your head to the right for any significant period of time in order to try to get the stereo field centered. The Lenovo P72 Hardware Maintenance Manual at https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/tp_p72_hmm_en.pdf shows the speaker assembly, part 31, on page 55 (page 61 of the PDF). My reaction to this aural presentation style has admittedly been quite visceral, as for an $8K laptop advertised as having "Amazing audio"at https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-p/ThinkPad-P72/p/22WS2WPWP72 or supporting "Audio and music production" at https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/think-workstations/media-and-entertainment-industry/c/media-entertainme..., I actually expected about 1000% better audio quality.  Given these lofty expectations driven by marketing selling points, even a modest bu... I have an HP dv6000t laptop with XP. Recently, the internal speakers stopped working, and the only way for me to hear sounds is if I plug in headphones or external speakers.

Nothing is muted, and I noticed that when I open the 'Volume Control' window, then click on advanced on the bottom left, the 'Advanced Controls for Volume Control' window comes up and the Bass and Treble sliders are greyed out. They were not greyed out before.

If it helps, my Audio driver card thing is Conexant HD Audio and i believe the actual laptop internal speakers are altec Lansing.

Do you think uninstalling then reinstalling the audio driver will help? If so, can anyone point me to a step-by-step guide? I tried googling but i couldnt find anything really specific for my laptop.

A:No More Audio From Laptop Speakers.

Laptop audio can be such a pain!

Is there an external wheel or something to raise and lower the volume? Sometimes, it's set using the function key (fn) in conjunction with a couple of keys on the top right of the keyboard. Chances are you've disturbed some hardware setting rather than a software setting. Still, I'd think it would affect the speakers and external speakers evenly.

Always possible that whatever the speakers use to hook up has become disconnected . . .

Dear Friends,

I know this request is a bit unusual, but please bear with me.

I'm trying to get some advanced information or suggestions in order to Troubleshoot this issue with my brothers HP Pavilion g7-1150us Notebook PC. Which had a Windows 10 upgrade sometime ago so I believe its unrelated to the Audio issue of No sound with the speakers, but there is sound into the headphones.
It could be something as simple as setting the speakers to default. Or perhaps the Audio drivers, Chipset or BIOS need to be updated or reinstalled?

This is the model page from HP:

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank You Very Much!

I just replaced my home theater speaker system and would like to use the old 5.1 setup for my computer. Can this be done? My computer will support up to 7.1 through onboard Realtek HD audio.

The computer uses 3.5mm plugs but my speakers use standard speaker wire. How do I wire it?

What about speaker impedance ?

A:Using Home Audio Speakers With Pc

Hi Ragtop -Your speakers will have to terminate at some sort of amplifier (like the receiver they were plugged into for your home audio setup) and the amplifier would connect to the sound card via a 3.5 to RCA adapter (http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/35mm-t.../30s1-12200.htm).I hope this helps!!

ok i have windows 7 64 bit, before i updated my sound card my headphones would crackle with music, movies, any sound, now they don't crackle but the most annoying thing is when i unplug my headphones i have to click on the via hd sound deck icon at the bottom and click make speakers default, if i plug in headphones i have to do the same for the headphones in order for sound to work through which ever device i want. Imagebin - A place to slap up your images. how do i fix this where it works normally like its supposed too?

A:I need help with my audio, headphones and speakers.

Where did you get the driver update? From ASUS for your specific PC model? or from some other source? If it wasn't from ASUS, that may be the problem. Non-Vendor specific drivers may or may not work properly.

If it was from ASUS, there may be a Windows/sound driver corruption. First thing to try is go to the Device Manager. There should only be the entry for the VIA sound and possibly an HDMI audio (if you have that). If there is any other entry, such as HD Audio Codec, RIGHT click on that entry and then LEFT click Uninstall. Then restart the PC and see if that fixes it. If not, go back to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the VIA sound and then LEFT click Uninstall. DO NOT check the box to also uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the VIA sound. Check to see if it is now working OK.

I have windows 7, and my computer is fairly new (9 months) I have never had a problem with it before, then last week, Avast (free) all of a sudden started popping up with warnings about every 5-20 seconds that it blocked something malicious.  I ran Avast antivirus, malwarebyte, and Kaspersky, but found nothing.  I installed updates, on everything, still couldn't find the problem.  The next morning I began getting random sound from my speakers, sometimes music, sometimes what sounded like cooking show segments, and someone comparing the fashion on madmen.  sometimes more than one program would be talking at the same time.  Always sounded static-y like it was getting a bad connection.  Only stopped when I turned off my wireless modem.  A friend who does tech stuff for a living and knows more than I do (I thought) took it over the weekend and ran some anti spyware stuff, said he couldn't really find much wrong.  I got it back today, and the random speaker issue is still driving me nuts.  I took avast off and put Microsoft security essentials, so no more avast pop-ups but what is going on?
I have tried running rkill, then tdsskiller, then malwarebytes in that order both in normal and safe modes, but nothing comes up wrong.  What is wrong and What do I do?

Would you know the model number and manufacturer of the motherboard in your computer? It's possible that you have sound built-in to the motherboard and just need to install the sound card drivers.

Hope this helps,

Hey All. I'm running Vista Ultimate and I recently dicarded my dell speakers that came with my xps 400 b/c only the back ones worked and those cables were too long to use efficently (I don't need help on how to arrange my speakers, thats OK). The real problem is that my Sony MDR-E828 headphones won't work with the computer/the computer dosn't recognize them (so essentially I have no sound, other than the beeps that come out of the PC itself). Before I uninstalled the other speakers (after I had disconected them), the headphones only worked for the sound config (wher the CPU makes sound come out of the different speakers to identify them). Now, I can't get to any mixer or any thing else (sound test, ect.) b/c no speakers are installed, and when I plug the headphones in, all I get is static. I went to the Sony Tech support and there are no downloads for the headphones. I'm completely lost and soundless. Any suggestions on how to get the headphones working?

A:Audio through Headphones W/O speakers

Your sound should card (even if onboard type) should still work whether you have speakers attached or not and so should your headphones.

You don;t mention what sort of sound card you have.

So, make sure that if you have a sound card that your onboard sound card is turned off from the BIOS and the correct driver is installed.

Your headphones should also work with generic drivers if they are the fancy kind but normally, like with ordinary headphones Vista should detect headphones have been connected.

To me it sounds like your sound device is not configured correctly
