I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

After having done the update, I'm having two issues that are bugging me:

1. I cannot change the lock screen from the "cave by the shore" default nor bypass it (Brink is working on the bypass issue I believe)

2. If I go into netplwiz and uncheck the need for a password, the "Welcome" screen has the system default user picture, that drawing of a circle over an arch, not the picture I assigned to the account. With the need for a password, the picture on both the sign-in screen and "Welcome" screen is correct tho.

The lock screen issue I can live with since I normally don't use a password, but the default user picture is bugging me. I went into %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures and replaced all the default pictures with ones the same name and size of the picture that I have for the account, but it still shows the default.

I've searched around for another place where the default picture is, but cannot find any, even with the search including hidden system files.

Anybody know where the system default user pictures are stored, other than in the User Account Pictures?

Hello TheSchaft,

Q1) I've added OPTION THREE in the tutorial below to be able to disable the lock screen again, but it doesn't do so at startup.

Lock Screen - Enable or Disable in Windows 10
Q2) I'm not aware of way to stop this yet when you have netplwiz set to automatically sign in to an account at startup. The blue note box at the top of the tutorial below will show you the default locations for account pictures to help.

You have recently removed one or more virusus from this computer, but now a new one has appeared.

First, AOL is extremely slow to start when I click on the icon. Once I've signed on, after a time a new sign-on screen appears on top of what I'm doing. I cancel that one. Soon I see activity at the bottom of the screen (where ordinarily you see "Done" or "//http:/..." etc. The virus is doing its own AOL activity! Soon afterward AOL is canceled, as if I had canceled it.

Also, Microsoft XP suddenly announces they are having to increase my virtual memory. Paging size is currently at 384 Mb, and my RAM is 1.25 GB. This is happening more and more frequently.

I have again changed my AOL sign-on password, and I no longer permit it to use the password automatically (I have to enter it at each sign on).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I went into my User Accouts in the Control Panel. I deleted a User called Nathon. I created a new user account with Admin authority named Jack.
However, everytime that I start my computer from my morning bootup, the Signon Window has the deleted User, Nathon.
I have to type in Jack, for the new user, and I get into Jacks Account.

Why is Windows not remembering that I have deleted the USER, Nathon?

I have never had such a problem with any of my other windows computers.

So I just reinstalled Windows 10 on my machine.

Before I had it set up so that I could log in with a password or fingerprint.

Now it seems my only options are (1) password only OR (2) password, PIN or fingerprint.

I don't want PIN as a sign in option. But I have to enable PIN via "Windows Hello" before enabling Fingerprint sign in.

And once I have fingerprint sign in enabled, if I remove the PIN I lose both PIN and fingerprint sign in options.

Any ideas how I can set up password and fingerprint as my only two sign in options?

Hey everyone

Every now and then my Windows 8.1 x64 shows the first sign-in sequence after a restart. I noticed it most recently happened after a normal Start->Power Options->Restart. I'm quite sure it has also happened after right clicking on start button (Control-X) and restarting from there, as well as from a custom shortcut I have for restart (shutdown.exe /r /t 00).

I had just finished installing IBM SPSS 22 for a class I'm taking, but I think this is unrelated.
It goes through the whole "Setting Up Your PC" and "Installing your apps" screens even though its perfectly fine and and all my data including app data is still there. See the attached file for an example of what was most noticeably shown.

With another incident, something similar to this happened but it actually reset some of my settings for things like MediaMonkey, Connectify Hotspot, GOM Player and VLC player. It was like they had been started for the first time ever with no license information or preferences like Always on Top.

Its not a matter of urgency but I keep worrying that one day it will actually mess with my system in a very annoying way.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Windows Fixit, num lock fix 50087, kb 154529

Vista Home Premium, Acer Aspire 6930, Centrino 2 duo, 4g memory.

Since installing this fix, which did'nt work, I keep getting the popup error message 'LogonUI.exe (this varies) -Bad Image, then text 'C:\PROGRA-1\google\GOOGLE-2\GOEC62-1.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error.' Before installing it said setting a restore point, trying to restore there are no restore points. How is this, thought the system (Vista home premium) automatically set restore points. This popup is messing the system up bigtime, almost impossible to load programs etc. as it constantly pops up and will not cancel.
Any clues on how I might get rid of this problem? Unable to find help on Microsoft sites.

My younger brother and I share a computer. It is Windows 10 Pro. I was letting him use it while i was asleep. All I know is that he was playing his video games. Anyways, he left the house to go hang out somewhere and i wake up to see that when i turn on the computer, only his account shows at the sign-in screen. Meanwhile, there are THREE accounts on this computer. My account, His account, and a local that my other siblings use sometimes. I restarted and even shut down my computer about 4 times. I waited until he came back and logged on his account to check what was wrong, and I see that my account is still there with all my files and docs. The other local account is there too. I log out to see if my User name is there but it isn't. I tried to see if my account was deactivated using these methods but none of them worked. I've looked on Microsoft's forums but all I found was how to activate the built-in administrator account. Please do your best to help!! I have important work to do on my account but i can't access it.

I Just had a log in error. I have a Dell Precision 7710 mobile work station with the Anniversary Update. I turned on the machine and tried to log in and got:

We can't sign into your account
This problem can often be fixed by signing out of your account, then signing back in. If you don't sign out now, any files that you create or changes that you make will be lost.

Logging out and restarting did not work. I shut it down, undocked (it is a Thunderbolt Cable Dock), and then restarted. Luckily it was back to normal log in. I shut down docked, and booted and it was normal log in again.
Not sure what happened. Hope the issue does not come back.

I read online this happened to others, but cannot find a cause or fix (other than restarting) and wondering if anyone knows why this happened.

A:MSN sign in problem

It could be many reasons why this happens...

The messaging servers could be temporarily down for maintenance or may have reached capacity due to heavy Internet traffic (during peak usage hours). Wait a short while, and then try again. You can check our server status page for the latest information on the service.

Disable your 'auto-detect' settings on your browser. For Internet Explorer users, click the IE Tools menu, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then clear the 'Automatically Detect Settings' box.

Check for a false proxy setting. On the MSN Messenger Tools menu, click Options. On the Connection tab, be sure the 'I use a proxy server' check box is clear. This option should only be selected if your network administrator tells you to do so.

If you are using ICS or Router for Home LAN, you may need to adjust some of your settings or update hardware/firmware drivers. For more information on this, search on LAN or Network in the MSN Messenger Help Topics from the MSN Messenger client.

Firewalls and third-party applications may also affect your ability to connect to MSN Messenger. To see if any of these applications are affecting your connectivity, you can disable the application(s) and then try to connect to the .Net Messenger service.

Whenever I try to sign in, it dosen't let me and when I click 'Troubleshoot', and repair, it says:
"Your host files contain MSN related entries which may interfere with name resolution. Would you like Windows Live Messenger to clean up your hosts file?"

I've tried scanning, checking for duplicate hosts file, checked the host file, the orignal one, tried clicking yes, tried clicking no, tried reinstalling MSN. But none worked. I need serious help. D=

Anyways, my hostfile says this

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# rhino.acme.com # source server
# x.acme.com # x client host localhost

When I try to click on the AIM icon taskbar to sign off, it signs me off but the sign on screen window comes back on. Never had that kind of problem before. Before I did the same thing and no screen comes back it signs me off fine, but now the sign on screen comes back on. I believe this strated when they did the Mail update thing on AIM. I have the latest version of AIM 5.9.3861.

Now on my laptop I have the previous version of AIM and no problems there.

I did uninstall and install it and no luck. When I uninstall it I have the AIM folder on my D file. Any ideas why this is happening and suggestion will be helpful. Hope this make sense.

A:XP sign in problem

I'm no expert but

I had the same problem with my customized pc with Windows Xp and I took it to a computer service store (Best Buy's Geek Squad) and they did what is called a REPAIR INSTALL and it solved my computer's problem.

I've been told you may have to do a REPAIR INSTALL but if you don't know how to do it yourself then I 'd highly recommend going to your local computer service store and seeing if they can do it for you. Unfortunetly, it won't be free unless your PC is still under warrenty if you bought it from that specific computer store.

If you don't back up your files when proceeding to perform a REPAIR INSTALL then almost everything saved on your computers (documents, games, programs, etc.) will be erased which will most likely cost you extra money if you want a computer service store to do that for you in addition to doing the REPAIR INSTALL

Good luck.

Greets, team!I am writing this on behalf of the friend whose PC I'm trying to fix and I was wondering if you could advise me.I have installed the most recent Ad-Aware SE Personal possible at the moment (build 1.06r1) and the most recent definitions for it (SE1R48 30.05.2005), along with Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 with the most recent detection rules to date. I have run them both, quarantining and deleting whatever spyware, viruses and trojans possible. At this point, I would usually look at the HijackThis! log and search for any processes using Google or another search engine but all searches I've tried with various search engines have returned adware-adjusted results. The desktop is also being refreshed with icons regarding gambling and the like. Other symptoms I am experiencing are random popups for such sites and the ability to shut down the iexplore.exe process to have it return immediately.I was wondering; would any of you find the cause(s) from the following HijackThis! log and reply with instructions, please?:Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 19:48:21, on 30/05/2005Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.ex... Do you have virus protection? It could be a virus or some spyware messing with it. Do you get a lot of pop ups? If you do have anti virus and are not experiencing spyware and pop ups, you can restore your pc to an earlier time when it was working using system restore(assuming you are running windows xp)

No biggie but I want to find out what is causing this problem. I cannot sign in to my Verizon phone account.
Something is blocking this apparently. I can access the site, enter my correct user and password and am taken right back to the sign in page. No errors nothing. Now I said to myself--self-try to access the account on another

computer. I did on a computer running XP as this one is and there was no problem. I contacted Verizon and they can enter my credentials and access the account with no problem so this must be a setting on this one computer causing the problem. I can sign in to a half dozen other accounts I have with no problem. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Can anyone give me advice with this problem that has been going on now for ages:

Each time I log on to Hotmail I need to enter my password despite the fact I always select the box
"Save my e-mail address and password".
Obviously I'm doing something wrong that prevents my password from being saved.
I would appreciate any help or advice to be able to save my password so that it's not necessary to enter it on each occasion.

Since about three weeks ago I have been unable to sign into a website that I'm a member of. I enter my username and password and it accepts them, only to then re-load the same page again ready for me to sign in, right back at square one. I can access the website fine though my laptop using the same internet connection and if I create a new XP user profile I can also sign in, but I cannot with this profile. Every other website I'm a member of works fine, its only this one that won't. Any ideas at all what I could do? I've done all the usual deleting of cookies and temp files several times over and reset to default settings etc.

A:Website sign-in problem

I get that if I've blocked a Cookie that I shouldn't have. Have a go at looking at your Blocked Cookies and see if it's listed. If you can't see it, type in the URL of the site and set to Allow.

Hope this helps

Some how I messed up my computer and the user accounts. I used to only have one account which was the default Admin. Now, after trying to create a second user, I have gotten rid of my orginal default user and only have the option to sign in to the new user account "clark" or the guest. The big problem is that none of my orgianl setting, IE favorites, my documents, outlook settings are there. I can still get to them but i Have to My computer-Shared Documents-Admin- and then i see all of my old documents(desktop folder with all of my old desktop items, my IE favorites, etc... ) but the Outlook does not work that way. i have to recreate the accounts all over agin and now I have lost all of my emails in the old mail box. The new account says it is the admin for the computer but I still see the old account listed in the my computer like I explained earlier. I do not see a way to get to my old user or setting. When I go to change users I only have one option which is the new account I just created and a guest account. There is not an option for the old account. What do I need to do?

I am an avid Scrabble player playing with up to a dozen or more players at a time and all moves are made by email, sometimes up to 80 or so moves a day.
All incoming emails are to my Hotmail address which I've set up with a sound (voice) notification whenever one comes in. I am running Windows Messenger which runs at startup, and until 2 days ago I used to log into Hotmail and sign into Messenger and every time I got an email I heard it arrive. 2 days ago the "Sign into Messenger" option disappeared, and now I have to keep checking manually to see if any emails have arrived.
Prior to this it has been working perfectly for the last 3 months.
I don't think my PC specs apply here, but I have WindowsXP Home SP2, 1024MbRam on an Intel 2.80GHz Dell PC.
Does anyone know how to get my "Sign into Messenger" option back?
My thanks in advance.

There are password reset CD's that you can find online that will allow you to reset an XP account/password.

The one I use is the Offline NT Password and Registry Editor. Works for all Windows versions.

This one is pretty strange...

Friends Gateway E3600 Desktop. After I finished getting it all tuned up with a clean install of XP Home SP2, all critical updates and a new secondary HDD then installed 1GB DDR RAM, then installled Acronis TI and stored a backup image on the slave drive, the following glitch happened after a few months of normal operation.

At power up the sign-in page came up and there were no users shown!!! Couldn't go any further, so my friend called me and I went throungh about 3 cycles of the same thing. Booted into Acronis and restored the last image. Sign-in went through normally.

I opened the Control Panel>Users Accounts and deleted the single user password and checked the 'Use Welcome Sctreen' option and uncheked 'Use fast user switching'. Rebooted and system performed as expected. Went directly to the 'Welcome' screen after the XP logo and progress bar screen and on into the normal desktop. Repeated the boot cycle about 3 times, then created a new differential backup image with Acronis TI and left.

Yesterday (about 7 days later) he called and said he had that same sign-in screen again with no users shown. My friend is totally computer illiterate and there is no chance he got into the User accounts and changed anything. I doubt he even know how to open the Control Panel. I'll be seeing him this week sometime and will probably have to restore the last TI image again.

Anybody got a clue what could be caus... Read more

I have contacted "MSN Messenger Live tech support" on two occasion and both have gotten me to do the same processes. I have followed step by step and still same problem.

These are the steps I have taken:

remove every user and password stored in your computer
remove your user credentials of the computer
delete any old files and cache that may be causing a conflict in Windows Live Messenger:

delete any old files and cache that may be causing a conflict in Windows Live Messenger:
Restart your computer.

Register the Secure Sockets Layer
register your MSXML3
Reinstall MSXML3 library
reinstall Windows Live Messenger:
restart your computer

I did all of these steps twice and still the same outcome.

Im trying to troubleshoot a problem my friend is having on her laptop(running XP). It's hooked up to a cable modem via a wireless router.

The problem is this, when trying to check her mail online, when she goes to sign in, the sign in page does not load and it directs her to a standard error page saying it cant find the server (i forget the exact message). This happens with her AOL account and Comcast. She can load up AOL.com just fine, as well as comcast.net, but when she clicks to sign in...error. This has happened in both IE and Firefox.

She is able to check these with mail2web.com but obviously would like to solve the problem.

Any suggestions?

In Firefox: Go to Tools> Options, click Advanced, and scroll to the bottom. Under Security check the following: Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0. Do the same in IE. You can also delete cookies, history, and temp files and see if that helps.
If still will not work, try this:
Start> Run> type: regsvr32 softpub.dll then OK. You should get a message: Dll Register Server in softpub.dll Succeeded click OK.

Hi, I am having the problem on startup, and it just happened. I saw a folder with the name of a customer on it, and tried to delete it, and couldn't. I got distracted with something else, and forgot about it. Well, I started the computer up today, and it started just fine. Then, doing a network change, a restart was requested. The system then started up with the name of this customer as the user account to log in. There was never any account set up for that name, so there is no login info for it. How can I get the correct user name on the start up screen? There is no option for choosing users at start up. Just the picture, and the user name. HELP!!!

Double check using the tutorial below to see if you may have this user account selected in netplwiz. If so, either select another account to have Windows to sign in to automatically at startup, or select to have users must enter a password at startup.
