Problem with restart option

Q: Problem with restart option

I am using a Toshiba A215-S5824 running Vista Home Premium w/SP2

When I chose the Restart option the laptop just shuts down and does not restart. This happens when you select the restart from the Start icon or when an update to Windows or other software need to be restarted to complete the installation of updates.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 2000 Professional

One of our machines does not have an option to shutdown or restart, the only option available is for the user to log-off.

I have administrative rights to this machine. Was there a hack that transpired or was it a virus? I could not get the NIC working since somehow when I got there the NIC has an exclamation mark in Device Manager -- that's why I can't update the virus definitions

I hope someone has encountered this so we can avoid a total re-install.

Is there a way I can set up power options to Restart on a nightly, weekly or monthly basis?

A:Auto Restart Option in Windows 7

I would like to suggest you try the following steps to restart the computer automatically nightly.
1.   Launch Task Scheduler.
2.   Click Action and select Create Basic task.
3.   Type AutoRestart (or others you want) in the Name box and click Next.
4.   Select Daily and click Next
5.   Type the time you want to restart the computer and click Next.
6.   Select Start a program and click Next.
7.   Click Brower and navigate to %SystemRoot%\System32 and select Shutdown.exe and click Open. Type –F –R in the Add arguments (optional) box and click Next.
8.   Click Finish.
Does it work?

just out of curiosity ......

is there anyway to bypass the click user option at beginning of restart. i would love to just restart my computer and have it go to my desktop instead of having to click on a user name.

A:Stop The User Option At Beginning Of Restart

okay -- after some great searching -- i came up with this --->

If you want to bypass the automatic logon to log on as a different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after Windows XP restarts. Note that this procedure applies only to the first logon. To enforce this setting for future logoffs, the administrator must set the following registry key:

Type: REG_SZ
Data: 1

will this solve the login problem after a restart? or am i way off base? i dont want to change anything in the regisrty unless i am sure (even though i did do a back up first)

I have a new Lenovo machine with Windows 7 preloaded

I normally leave my machine in the 'sleep' option overnight. I then use the mouse to resume Windows 7. On a number of occassions I see a power saving box appear with a countdown and then the Lenovo logo appears on the screen with a Windows 7 recovery panel. I then have to re-boot the machine. I have used the help box that windows provides to 'find the cause' after the reboot, but it does not point the way to resolve the problem. I would guess that this fault appears nearly 30% of the time that I try and resume following the 'sleep' option.

I was in middle of taking a exam while on firefox, than all a sudden there was was a blue box in the middle of the screen with an error message telling me the computer had to shut down. So I shut down the computer and when it restarted in System Recovery I got "Launch Startup Repair" and "Start Windows Normally" as my only two options. So I chose Start Windows Normally but it couldn't restart and eventually cycled back to the Launch Start Up Repair.
So I clicked it to do the automatic repair in the Startup Repair, but than that ran for over a 10 hour time period before I realized it wasn't ever going to finish and was stuck. So I clicked cancel and got these other options: System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt. (Which I don't know how to use any of those) But I clicked System Restore *hoping* my uncle made a restore point when he just fixed my computer two weeks ago (other than that there would be no other restore points in place). But it said "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore." Than I realized on the top of the list of options it says "Operating system: Unknown on (Unknown) Local Disk"
The fact it doesn't even know my current operating system lead to me to believe I have to reinstall windows somehow (I say "somehow" since I never have done it before and am nervous. I do have the Windows 7 64 bit disk ready in the driver though... Read more

You could try inserting the Windows 7 installation discs, which you said you have, booting to the CD (need to change boot order in BIOS), running the Recovery Prompt from the disc, and typing the following ?sfc /scannow? (without the ??).

Possibly after that procedure, you can go back to your previous step (see below) and will have an OS Installation to pick (instead of it saying Unknown).

I suspect what you said is true, you may need to re-install Windows 7. Reinstalling shouldn't be too difficult, as the procedure is rather straightforward these days, just put the discs in and follow the instructions.

To recover your data, there are other things that could be done, such as installing an Operating System on a USB flash drive or plugging your hard drive into another computer. (let's see how the above sfc /scan... Read more

Hopefully there's an answer out there. I'm a long time Firefox user currently using Version 14.0.1 on a PC with W7 64bit.
Since taking the upgrade to version 14, I no longer have the option to pin the shortcut to the task bar of start menu but have to be content with the shortcut on the desktop. When right clicking on the shortcut, I no longer see the traditional option of where to pin the shortcut. I've gone back as far as Version 10.0 but the option is no longer there either.

Any ideas on what's happened or how to solve this mystery?

First (to rule things out), make sure you have "display the contents of system folders" and "show hidden files and folders" checked, and "hide protected operating system files" UNchecked.

If you're still experiencing the problem, try the registry script in the other thread.

Ok guys I've got a tricky one for you. I've been to alot of other forums with this one and I am out of ideas so I am really hoping someone here is smarter then me which isnt very hard by my experience =)
I am a network admin for a smaller company. One of our sales guys recently started having the infamous "Windows is blocking access to this file for your protection" error when he tries to extract files from a .zip that is sent automatically from one of our sister companies. It says you can go to properties and click "unblock" which of course I did and which of course makes absolutely no difference. When he double clicks the zip it appears empty. When he clicks "extract all files" it gives the old Blocking this file error mentioned previously. I searched around google and read a couple suggested fixs and nothing has worked. I tried a Registry entry that marks certain files as low risk. I made sure he is a local admin of his machine. I logged in as domain admin and tried it myself...same result. I am kind of at a loss here and he really needs to be able to view and extract zip files. Could it be an update he got and installed? As of right now we dont yet have SMS or WSUS so users pretty much get to pick their own updates (I know its dumb but I just started.). It cant really be a group policy because everyone operates under the same policy and it works fine for them. He is running Windows Xp Pro SP2. Any advice someone smarter then me co... Read more

Folders and files are still hidden even after I clicked the radio button in front of show hidden files and folders in the view menu under folder option window. I suspect that this is due to the same virus which has infected already also causing drives to disolay "open with" window when double clicked it. I was opening my drives through Windows explorer instead. But I still need the double click option. Is there a way to remove this virus and to get my PC back to the original healthy state. Unfortunately I have not created a restore point recently. It would be a great help if somebody can supply a solution for this.

If you have a virus, scan with your AV and remove it. Use another online scan, just to be sure, like TrendMicro. And since most bad guys are not viruses, you also need to scan with at least 2 anti-malware programs.

Free anti-malware scanners:
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware 2007
Spyware Eliminator
Emco Malware Destroyer
Spyware Doctor
Arovax Anti-spyware
Trend-Micro Rootkit Buster
F-Secure Blacklight
Bootzilla (Bootable anti-malware CD with many other tools.)

Hello everyone. I have been having an ongoing problem with my computer and I have asked for advice many times, and haven't really gotten any answers. Basically the problem is simple. When I click on a link in firefox, firefox opens it in a new window. This isn't right, it should open in the same tab. This also happens just by pressing the back button. This problem also effects the desktop. When I will select a single program, a cluster of programs around it get selected as well. Today this problem happened again, but I noticed something different about it. When I went to restart my computer (it generally works normally after that) I saw that my usual options of "Standby" "Turn Off" and "Restart" were replaced with "Hibernate" "Turn Off" and "Restart." I'm not sure what it means or if the problem is serious, but it is quite frustrating so if anyone can help shed some light on the issue, please do!

Oh and I was told before that my problem could be that my control key is stuck, but I have cleaned the key and it has been unstuck.

A:The 'folder Option' In The Tools Option Dissappear!

Are you comfortable with making edits in the registry? Back up your registry FIRST!
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

the "NoFolderOptions" should have a value of =dword:00000000

My guess is yours has a value of =dword:00000001

Hello ragavendrang.

I would suggest that after you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media you use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive, running this then using the outline in Step Two #2 to create and format a single 100GB partition using diskpart will get you a clean all and a chkdsk /r for the best possible space to install Windows to.

After you have made backups of everything you care to save and you want to do a real wipe "clean all" to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old Windows drivers, giving you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to; it goes hand-in-hand with a clean install.
