Keyboard: some keys registering 2 keys

Q: Keyboard: some keys registering 2 keys

Hi,

I am using a Razer Arctosa keyboard on my desktop computer running Win7 (keyboard is approx 2 years old).

I am experiencing the following (recently, and sometimes it occasionally goes back to normal):

Pressing "w" registers "w4"
Pressing "W" (shift + w) registers "W$"
Pressing "4" registers "w4"
Pressing "$" (shift + 4) registers "W$"
(As if "w" and "4" are linked; occasionally it registers as "4w")

Pressing "u" registers "u" and F5.
(which means when I am typing and press the "u" it refreshes my page... this is the second time I am writing this...)

Pressing the Windows key registers NumLock toggle.

Pressing "7" registers "/7"

This is all of the weird ones I have noticed. All other keys seem normal.
As I type this it has done the above, but now it is back to normal. Cannot find a pattern when it decides to change from crap to normal. It is back to crap again.
This is the 4th day since it started and the computer has been restarted/shutdown various times.
I have also checked for malware and it is all clear.
The most recent keyboard drivers have been downloaded and installed, but did not fix it.
No liquids have been spilled.
Have searched the web and have not encountered a solution (or someone with the exact kind of problem).
Anyone has any idea of a fix or what may be affecting it?

Thanks,
Destinknee

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Pretty much every time I see this it's due to something spilled on the keyboard that has damaged it or just a keyboard that has failed.

Test it on another computer, if it does the same thing then it needs to be replaced. On the other computer don't load any drivers or software for it just plug it in and wait for Windows to install it's drivers for it and test it.

I have a Gyration RF mini keyboard. There is a cluster of keys to the right of the space bar, including the space bar, that do not register with the receiver when depressed. The rest of the keyboard works fine. I figured it is a cleaning issue, so I tried that. I even took the keyboard apart to see if there was any visible dirt or obstruction. No luck. Any ideas. I doubt it is worth getting fixed. I would assume the repair costs are close to the cost of a new unit. Maybe I am wrong.

Visit the manufacturer's website and download their driver for the keyboards

Hello, I went through the process of cleaning my mouse while the monitor was off and I'm fairly sure I clicked something maybe I shouldn't have but after that the whole keyboard was messed up..

E shows up as ]
D shows up as ''

Esc, start, [ , n, y, I, F1-F12 keys don't register, among a few others..

Things I've tried so I don't waste anyones time.. [Windows 7]
Changed Location, Keyboard Layout (English - US) is the only language
Ctrl - Shift x1/2, Alt - Shift x1/2, and pretty much any other variant I could think of.
Plugged another keyboard in, same thing.
Plugged keyboard in another computer, works like a charm.
Restarted, plugged and unplugged. Uninstalled and tried to update driver..

Nothing worked so far, hopefully you can can make something happen.
Thanks in advance.

This is an odd issue that I have not found anyone else having. I am not sure as to the cause of it.

Basically, when I press certain pairs of keys, the computer acts as though another key is being pressed as well.
Some examples:
q+s: qws
w+d: wed
r+y: ryu
k+u: kui
l+i: lio

There are others, as well as ones with 3 keys triggering a fourth. They follow no general pattern (although wd, qs, ku, and li are the same pattern
on the keyboard, that pattern doesn't cause a similar response on other keys, like ef, rg, th, yj, etc.)

This problem has persisted as long as I have had this laptop. I got it used on Amazon. It said that, in terms of condition, it just had a few minor
scratches and such, which is accurate.

This occurs every time the keys are pressed at the same time (in fact, while typing this, I was constantly having to correct typos such as "everyu",
"lioke",  and "whiole".)

Hello there. Yesterday, I bought the Ideapad 310-15isk, and it's phenomenal in many aspects. However, I'm a bit bothered by the extensive keyboard this laptop has, most importantly, the pagination commands on the arrow keys. I've been meaning to find a solution to disable those and just make them work on the Numpad since it's really bothersome to type on and then go all the way back because of the return pagination key. Is there any solution for this to unbind those commands only on the arrow keys?

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hey guys,

I'm having a really big problem with my keyboard. I'm running windows 7. The problem started about four days ago, I've searched for various ways to solve this problem but I couldn't find any.

The issue is that randomly, my keyboard will stop typing keys and every time I hit a key, instead of typing a key, it would act as if I was hitting a shortcut. Such as, when it happens i hit the "F" key and the tools options come up. This happens on every windows even on MSN messenger, I hit my keys and it hits shortcut keys for the window I'm on.

I would be using my computer for a while and the keys would work fine but then a little later, somethings 30 minutes sometimes an hour or two, randomly they turn into shortcut keys. Every key i hit, I tried a new keyboard but it seems to happen also. I don't get the issue, I've scanned fully using malwareBytes, MCAffee, and Advanced system pro, but it's still happening. It's really frustrating and annoying when it does happen. I've turned my keyboard off and on, re sync'd. I'm starting to lean more towards it being a virus or something that messed with my settings somehow.

Malwayre Bytes did find something while scanning

files\Spigot\wtxpcom\components\widgitoolbarff.dll (Adware.WidgiToolbar) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I'm really stumped here, I haven't tried un-installing my keyboard & re installing it but Idk what good t... Read more

A:Keyboard keys randomly turn into shortcut keys

I would also like to add that, when this occurs. I have to restart my computer for the keyboard to work correctly. It's wireless & I've tried a wired keyboard also, it's the same issue.

Also when this happens, while on the internet. Every time I click a link or the internet like "home" "news" anything at all on the internet even an image, it won't go to it but instead it will download the data into my computer... It's very strange & I'm completely stumped on what to do. Or to even search this on google for other similar issues, I don't even know how I would go around to search that. Or what I would type in the search bar. This happens with both Firefox & google chrome. Even outside the internet in just my desktop, it's impossible to type even on notepad.

All the rest of the keys work fine except for a few in that row. I dont know if it was a update that caused this or a hardware problem but id like to get it working right agaln.

I have a weird, specific problem. I'll start by saying I have an HP Multimedia Keyboard (P/N: 5188-6077) running on Windows Vista 64-bit. My media player is the latest version of Winamp.

I'm having problems configuring my multimedia buttons, specifically my volume up and down buttons. Right now, they are working just fine, but my problem is that when I turn the volume up, it increases both in the player AND the main volume, when all I want it to do is to adjust the main volume. I want it configured that way because I game and I like to keep the music low relative to the game I'm playing so I can hear it in the background with it overbearing the other sounds.

I'm asking about this as a hardware problem and not software because I've tried to resolve this through Winamp by configuring around it without it working. I can turn off all global multimedia hotkeys, but that turns off everything, and I like my play buttons. So I come to the part that I need help with. I tried just Enabling hotkeys and adding the multimedia buttons as the hotkeys, but the porgram doesn't recognize that I'm pressing the button. In the hotkey part, I press N, it shows N, but when I press Play or Next, it shows nothing. And it's not just Winamp that has this problem. I tried other programs to work around that, and they all have the same problem.

If you can help me out that would be bloody fantastic, as this small problem is driving my completely mad.

Two questions:

1. This first one is a question about what two registry keys do. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > services > Tcpip > Parameters > DNSRegisteredAdapters > *Corresponding NIC*. What are the Flags, and RegisteredSinceBoot
keys? What do they do?
2. I attempt to change the values of these keys. They go back to their original values if I restart, log in, or run ipconfig /registerdns.

Here is some background. I am on an IT engineering, and I have been looking into a DNS issue we have had for quite some time. The issue is that our AD DNS server records do not update for about half of our machines. We have timestamps dating back a couple of
months (I know, I know, scavenge. The team in charge of that is in the process of getting that set). I have been looking into a multitude of things to ensure all computers' DNS records update.

In my testing, I have checked several machines and notice that those keys mentioned above have the values of- flags = 2, and registeredsinceboot = 1. On the computers that aren't updating their values are 0. I have attempted to change to 2 and 1 on a computer
that isn't updating, but the values always revert back to 0.

Perhaps the issue we are seeing isn't related at all to the keys presented, but if you can help me identify the purpose of these keys, and how to save the values if changed, that would be greatly appreciated. At least for testing purpose.

Hi everyone, The problem happened unexpectedly, i.e., I didn't install any software, didn't update the BIOS, didn't change the hardware. Just one morning after the laptop booted as usual (in Linux), the problem appeared and keeps on appearing every morning ever since. The problem: each key on the column "9-o-l-." when pressed started to activate (also) another key on the keyboard: "9" activates F11, "o" increases the audio volume,  "l" mutes the audio speaker, and "." mutes the microphone. This is even visible on the keyboard LEDs "Speaker muted" and "Microphone muted."The problem appears consistently in both Windows and Linux, and even before any OS boots (on the BIOS/Setup screen). Malwarebytes pardons Pirates and gives away free one year premium license keys. Malwarebytes Corporation is after the counterfeit keys, they?re running ?Amnesty key? program with which, if Malwarebytes Program detects abused, pirated or counterfeit keys during the upgrade to version 2.1.8, then the user will be presented with a special screen (Locate your license key) with two options (check the screenshot below).

Hello,How can I get the home and end keys near the arrow keys on my keyboard without losing page up and page down?I'm a power screen reader user and use the home and end keys once every 5 minutes and I use the computer for around 9-10 hours a day. This means there is a whole lot of moving my hand from the arrow keys to the top of the keyboard. After a day of using my new laptop, my arm is starting to hurt from moving from the bottom to the top of the keyboard so much. What most manufacturers do is have fn+left be home and fn+right be end. They also have fn+up be page up and fn+down be page down. I would love this! Currently the page up and page down keys are right above the arrow keys. FN + page up and down being mapped to home and end would be great as well. I can't figure out how to map fn keystrokes using something like Auto Hot Key though. I would be OK with swapping the home and end keys with the page up and down keys, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Auto Hot Key does not work 100% of the time and I need this functionality 100% of the time. What method would be the best for me to get home and end by the arrow keys?

Hey Everyone

Started typing on my internal laptop keyboard today and reliased that mainly keys a b and n were not working.
So I decided to clean them by taking off the key and white holder, then used a cloth to clean all the dust etc.. both under the rubber button and around it. This still didn't work however, so I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver as well. However this didn't work either.

Its probably best to try and buy a new one off e-bay, but before I do this does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also interesting, a b and n seems to be a popular combination of keys for other toshiba laptops that don't seem to be working... (Using a USB keyboard atm to type which works fine)

Well you should be using Forms & Subforms for your data entry. When you link the Main form (based on the main table) to the Subform via the master key/foriegn key Access auto populates the foriegn key for you as soon as you enter soem data in to the subform.

I have been using Dell Inspiron 15 5567 i7 since August of 2017. On January 3, 2017 I restarted my laptop for Windows updates. However, when I began to use the laptop after the restart it became apparent that the multimedia keys (volume, brightness, play/pause, etc.) weren?t working. It appears that during the restart, the top row of keys somehow changed from primarily acting as multimedia keys to primarily acting as function keys. This change is unwanted and quite inconvenient for me.
I?ve spent a fair amount of time searching through options and settings in Windows Control Panel and Windows Settings and haven?t found anything related to the function of the multimedia/Fn keys. I?ve gone to the BIOS settings three times and not only is there nothing related to the multimedia/Fn keys, but my BIOS doesn?t seem to have the same configuration and options as the online examples. I have accessed BIOS both by pressing shift while selecting restart and by pressing F2 when the Dell screen appears when restarting. Finally, the Fn-lock key (Fn+Esc) does not seem to have any function at all.
I feel that I?ve exhausted all of the obvious options and all of the options I can easily find online. I would greatly appreciate any help in figuring out how I can switch the Fn keys back to performing as multimedia keys. Have I looked over something? Am I not properly accessing BIOS settings? Whenever I change the Function Keys setting to use F1-F12 (via Lenovo Vantage), after a few reboots the setting changes back to using the Hot-Keys instead. Why?  And what can I do to stop this from happening?

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. Well its pretty simple. I was using my computer as normal and I just happened to hold down the right shift key for 8 seconds which brought up Sticky Keys window which is part of the Accessibity Options. This window I closed and I was screwed after that. I couldn't get any of the numbers up in text and even when using the computer with the mouse it had some problems. After messing with Sticky Keys some more and pressing OK, I now can't even use my keyboard. I just want to get my PC working back to normal, please help I have lots of work I need to do. My mouse I can do without by my keyboard I need working. Maybe a system restore will help but I'd prefer to understand what is going on so I can stop this from ever happening again.

A:Sticky Keys/filter Keys... Whats The Problem?

If you held down the shift key for 8 seconds, then you did not turn on Sticky Keys, but rather you could have turned on Filter Keys. Try holding down the shift key again, for 8 seconds, and this time choose 'Cancel'. Does that bring things back to normal?STICKY KEYS:Turn on/off sticky keys by hitting the shift key 5 times. As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

I have a Commodore Laptop (Argentina) and all the keys that have a FN function attached to them do not work as their normal function any more - this happened after lending the laptop to my kids....

I think it may be FN lock, but can-t find any way to unlock it.

Any ideas please.

Many thanks.

A:Keys that have FN functions on them not working as normal keys

Check the Manual on the model's Support Downloads webpage for key combo to unlock: http://www.ehow.com/how_4968993_unlo...ey-laptop.html

Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.

It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

On my dell inspiron 15r the F1-F12 keys are covered by multimedia keys like volume, screen brightness, battery, internet, and other. I need to disable these because in some video games I play, I need to use these keys because they are set hotkeys that cannot be changed. Even better if anyone knows how I can select certain keys that would be great.

A:How Can I Disable The Multimedia Keys Covering The F1-F12 keys?

Hi dudgybudgie and welcome to W7 Forums

Taken from the manual:

Quote:
You can configure the multimedia control keys on the keyboard using the Function Key Behaviour in the System Setup (BIOS) utility. The options in the Function Key Behaviour setting are:

Multimedia Key First – This is the default setting. Pressing any multimedia control key performs the associated multimedia action. For function key, press <Fn> + the required function key.
Function Key First – Pressing any function key performs the associated function. For multimedia action, press <Fn> + the required multimedia control key.

NOTE: The Multimedia Key First option is active only in the operating system.

Hi folks

If anybody was a member of the old TechNet system and have keys from those days -- W7 / W8 /W8.1 keys are still valid to be used for W10 installs.

If you haven't got your keys or lost them you can still logon (use your Microsoft ID) and get your keys -- export as an XML file and then open with EXCEL to get a nice formatted list.

Same rules apply -- W7 PRO and up for example can be used to install W10 Pro etc.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Old Technet keys still valid for W10 installs -you can still get keys

Yep, all my Windows 10 Free upgrades were from my TechNet Windows 8.1 keys. Those were the keys in use at the time I did the free upgrade. At that time, you had to do the upgrade at least once to get your digital entitlement. Now you can clean install and just type in your Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 key. Bonus bonus.

A:Nero registry keys stubborn keys

Hi, well to begin with there is no root classes hive ( it is not loaded there) a change in the registry after 2000 made a difference :-

You need to navigate to [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-XX-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\Software\Classes]

Where the SID is here represented by xxxx's you will only have one or two sid's so easy to find your current user.

Once here delete away. Restart

From time to time the computer behaves as if sticky keys and/or filter keys is turned on. They are not turned on in control panel so I can't just go there to turn them off. Running CC Cleaner sometimes helps with this problem. It is not an issue with the keyboard either. On a possibly related note, my homepage keeps changing itself to MSN. Thank you for any help.

A:Fn Keys and Audio Keys not working after updates.

You probably updated the power management driver.  Its affecting a lot of people.  Its affecting OSD and Fn keys.  See below post.  The solution is to ROLL back the power management driver.
