Task Manager not showing all tabs, only the Show Processes from All Users/Win7 Ult N 64bit

Q: Task Manager not showing all tabs, only the Show Processes from All Users/Win7 Ult N 64bit

Windows 7 Ultimate N, 64bit, updated with latest Microsoft Patches. (updated from Vista over 1 year ago). Only recently stopped working.

Task Manager no longer shows all of the tabs, only the second tab that lists each single process and gives me the ability to End Process. No longer do I see the tab that shows the currently open applications or the tab that would show the system resources.

Also, no close on the dialog, I have to close using the right click Close Window on the task bar.

Not sure how to fix.Laura Madeira

Preferred Solution: Task Manager not showing all tabs, only the Show Processes from All Users/Win7 Ult N 64bit

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there a way to force Task Manager to open with the "Show processes from all users" option enabled?

I created a shortcut and added "/1" (without quotes) in the property target line but it did not work. (I know, one click will accomplish this but I just like to tweak!)

Found Brink's post of 05-18-2009 on same subject. Followed his directions and worked like a charm.

Thanks Brink !

Hello Manuel,

In addition, you could use the shortcut below to have this. The "Show processes from all users" option just runs Task Manager as elevated (Run as administrator).

I think question of security (UAC), this had been set not like in XP when you was able to only check a box to have this option permanently.

I just noticed when I try to show processes for all users in task manager, UAC prompts me, I push OK and task manager disappears. If I try it again or maybe the third time, it works. Anybody heard of this. I keep Avast up to date, run Spybot and Malwarebytes every 3-4 days. I don't think it's a virus or malware thing. Any thoughts?

A:Task manager "show processes all users" fails sometimes

I am still having the same problem. I hate to bring this back again but does anyone else have this problem? To "show processes for all users" it works on the 3rd try. It is getting annoying. Even if you don't know how to fix it, do you have the same problem?

I'm using XP and though I've searched Windows Help & Support and Microsoft, I've not found a clear answer to the precise difference between the 2 tabs. I mean the Applications tab lists "running programs". Am I correct that "running" means "completely ready to go...operating"? And what's going on with the programs listed in the Processes tab?

Also, (and this may be a question or an administrator) In signing up and registering, I read something about being able to automatically add basic info about my O/S and my computer etc. to every post. I think it said to click on the aqua "User Panel" but when I got there the only way I saw to add that information appeared to be with my signature. Is that correct and if not, how do I add that info automatically.

A:Difference between Applications and Processes tabs in Task Manager

Hi, When I look at the two of them applications shows the apss that I am running while processes also shows the apps. sittingin the sys tray ready to be called on or are working in the backgound plus all the processes that are associated with my copy of XP.

There are sites that can explain these processes I think one is named Blk Viper but I don't have it bookmarked at the moment.

Google would find it for you plus others that explain the start up programs in XP. Peace Mal

Im using Windows XP professional SP2, and ive just installed a new monitor on my PC, when i had finished installing the monitor, i reset the PC and went off using IE to check through some web sites. When i tried to open the task manager, (CTRL + ALT + DEL ) it showed something i had never seen before. It was showing the service Tab, but it didnt show the tabs on the top, and i couldnt change the tab.I tried closing the task manager and opening it again, but it acted the same. Then, with the task manager open, i hit CTRL+ALT+DEL again, and it opened a new task manager.I rebooted the PC and it made no difference. I have a strange issue. I have a couple of processes that do not show in task manager at all. The strange part is they do on my other PC's.

If I start Word I don't see word.exe if I start some games I don't see their *.exe's I find it to be strange that htings aren't being listed in here. Uninstall and reinstall of offending softwares is not changing anything.

Mind you Process manager is not empty it has a fair amount going on... just some never show up.

Also no rhyme or reason as far as application opening times I can start up word first and it not show up but then start up internet explorer and see the iexplore.exe.

I discovered this bug by a call from a relative asking if I sent an email to him and of course I did not. When I got home from work my inbox was full of email return notices from dead email addresses that I still have in my contact list. I didn?t think these things could send email if you are using cloud mail but is has sent mail to all my contacts. . I ran McAffee and Defender and no problems showed up. The next thing it did was send up a pop up telling me I needed to reboot and I had not rebooted for 5 days. Like a dummy I rebooted. I brought up task manager to see what processes were on the list and saw that there was nothing on the list. It has also removed labels from the tabs and buttons. The McAffee Center has no labels on it thus rendering it useless. Of course I have lost administrative control. I can't install Malwarebytes because the install window is colapsed and I cannot access any of the buttons. I am also getting a new error message when trying to get into some websites. Hi there,

This is my first post. This looks a good forum, I hope I can help.

Or maybe somebody could help me with the task manager.

In Xp when I used the task manger it told me how much CPU is being used. this was very helpful because if one particular process was taking up to much power I ended task.

Yet in Vista x32, even when the cpu is going at full pelt, it only register a few % on the odd program. Something is running, but I do not know what. This has been an ongoing problem for years, and I have installed and reinstalled, and run ant viuses and malware and root kits. Yet when running fully loaded, it never shows what is running, even when showing all users.

My laptop is a Dell inspiron 1720.

I would be grateful if somebody could shed so light on this upgrade from Xp.

Many thanks

A:Task manager. Why does is show only a few processes running at low power?

Go to view in task manager and check the infomation that you want to see

For much better information, download process explorer from your search near start up button.

In task manger you have to check show all users, also.

I have a really horrible problem I really need help with!

Whenever I watch any video on the web (such as from YouTube), the video begins to constantly glitch and repeatedly freeze briefly and it's a really horrible experience. It seems to happen for a few minutes at a time, and then is ok for a few minutes, and this repeats periodically. When it glitches it is glitching several times a second and it becomes unintelligible. This typically gets worse the longer the video is. This happens the same if I use Chrome, IE, or Opera.

I've found from watching the Performance tab of the task manager that the CPU is completely maxed out during these periods of glitching. The video will eventually "stick" completely for several seconds, and then release and it runs ok for a minute or two. It's horrible! It's not the internet connection because the player shows the video has loaded enough buffer. If I look at the processes, there is no process shown that is taking very much CPU, just maybe < 10 % typically! That is really strange I don't understand that!!!!

It typically gets worse the longer the video plays (after 10 min it's a lot worse). Could this be an overheating GPU? Does GPU usage show up as CPU on the performance graph???

It is a really awful experience.

I could really use some help.

I recently added 2GB memory to the existing 2GB. Memory use during video playing is typically steady at < 2GB. Also, I have a dual boot OS with Ubuntu 14.04. V... Read more

I'm not sure if this is a virus or if my computer is really just having some serious problems.

I am using a Compaq Presario v6000 running Windows XP Pro, sp3. I have recently (as in, in the last three months) done a complete reinstall of Windows ... these problems started within the past week.

I noticed the first time when I had had my computer on for some time ... maybe a few days in a row. This never used to happen before and now it happens even when my computer is on for less than 24 hours. I'm including hibernation time as "on" time; I often put my computer into hibernation when I am away from it. so I can keep what I am working on open to resume when I return to the computer. I clicked on my Chrome icon on the desktop to open the browser. Nothing happened; I have some mouse troubles so I thought I didn't click it. I ended up clicking on the icon half a dozen times, and the program itself never opened. I opened the task manager to see if it had opened a process -- and there were six of them. I tried terminating one of the running chrome.exe's but nothing happened. They stayed. I rebooted my computer and was told that Windows had recovered from a serious error, although googling the results of the EventLog dump didn't find me anything useful. I figured it was a one time issue. Now this morning I opened TweetDeck, which I had just been running last night, and my word processor RoughDraft, which I had also recently been running, and now b... Read more

When I look at the Processes tab of the Task Manager, the User Name displayed is not for my currently logged-in account ('Josh'). It is showing the User Name of the other account on this machine ('Matt'), even after I have deleted that account.

This happened after I was told to create a new Administrator account before I could create the normal account that would be 'Matt'. I create the new Admin account and named it 'Josh' then from the new admin account I created the 'Matt' account, which is a normal user account. Ever since this, the Task Manager always shows 'Matt' for processes.

Also, when I do things like install new programs and the installer asks for the first user name (a field the OS automatically fills with the User Name for the current account) it autofills with 'Matt'.

I've no idea why Windows is doing this, and I'm asking if there is anything I can do to fix it. If no one knows why it's doing this but can provide me with a fix then I'll be perfectly happy.

Hello, here's the deal. Two days ago, I noticed 2 problems/changes with the operation of my OS. 1st, I started hearing multiple clicking noises while using IE7, (it seemed like it was trying to load instances of something, but nothing popped up, some may have coincided with banner ads), however, that did not happen previously. The click noise is one in the windows default sounds, but not the one I usually only hear once when clicking a link. I checked if my sound profile had been changed and saw nothing different. The clicks also happen randomly in explorer with no open network connections, say sometimes when I'm simply navigating folders or opening a program. I've been running IE7 for months and this behavior is definately new. Does not happen in Firefox.

Then 2nd, in order to start investigating the issue, while administrator, I opened the task manager and opened the processes tab. When I clicked "show processes from all users" button the UAC opens for confirmation, I confirm the action, and then the task manager just closes, and does not reopen to show everything. That never happened before either. I've tried using the task manager from both the task bar and ctrl-alt-del with the same results, however, when I navigate to taskmanger.exe in win\sys32 folder and right click and run as administrator, it opens automatically showing processes from all users. Hmmmm...

After searching the web to no avail for a possible OS bug or any related articles, and... Read more

Win 7 64 bit Dell Optiplex 780. 4G RAM.
A few days ago the system went sideways and now I have very high (but fluctuating) CPU usage and memory usage.  Processes in Task Manager  are running wild and some are showing multiple instances where I wouldn't have expect them to be so. Using Chrome to make this post but IE repeatedly crashes and allowing the crash to search for a resolution to the problem does not produce results. Details have shown issues with various dll files.
I've temporarily removed avast. Installed and run malwarebytes, adware, jrt, ccleaner. Did a scan disc. All these come back clean.
Thinking this is a windows issue but not sure where to start.
Any thoughts?

Hello chasingstillness
Please start with this program.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (A.K.A. MBAR) from HERE
Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain.
If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Hello Michael, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can create right click on the C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe file and click on Send To and Desktop (create shortcut).

Next right click on the shortcut, and click on Properties, Shortcut tab, Advanced button, check Run as administrator, click on OK, and OK.

When you check "show processes from all users" with this shortcut, it will not reset on you.

Is it possible to make the button "Show processes from all users" available to all users? If you click on the button now (normal users) there is nothing happing.
If you log in with a admin account this is working.

A work around is to run this from C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe as admin and you can see all processes.

But the questions is, is it possible to make this button available for all users with GPO settings?

Somehow the task manager has lost the header tabs to move from applications to processes to network. It was there originally.I also lose from time to time my volume control icon, and it doesn't become hidden, it just disappears completey. To change the volume I have to either go into the control panel/sound and then adjust the volume and leave that open if I need to turn it down. OR reboot and it sometimes comes back. When I go to 'notification Icons" in control panel the icon and lettering for sound icon is not bold or high lighted but instead it is diminished. I have also seen a popup stating that modification will take affect when it (the sound) is activated as a pop up, but can't remember where I saw that happen. Another question I have is...Ihave only one machine, my C:drive has Vista ultimate, all important files are on E,F HD's, removable, or external drives. I downloaded Win7 and burned a disk.I removed the 40Gig C: with Vista  put a 250Gig drive in that location and installed Win7. So far so good and am very pleased with everything even with a few bugs. Now I needed to go back to the Vista drive, so I removed the Win7 drive, reinstalled the 40Gig as C and received a prompt stating that ? win logon was not found. So I got the Vista DVD and did a repair which worked. If Win7 doesn't get an update to operate past August 1st and I go back to the 40Gig Vista drive will that happen again? AND where does that file get stored when you originally install? D... Read more

I am guessing the answer is no. When you run Internet Explorer, each individual tab shows as a separate entry on the task bar.. which is sort of cool, because you can then mouse over the explorer icon, and through peek get a view of all your open tabs.. Unfortunately, explorer does not have some of the essential FF plugins that I use on a regular basis.. so..

Is there a way to make this feature work with Firefox as well..?

So I was using my computer yesterday and it was completely fine. I turned it on today to find that all my files on my desktop were sorted by alphabetical order and the desktop was black. The next thing was a popup appeared saying that Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center has stopped working. The taskbar is completely empty and only shows the windows icon, date, time, volume etc. The resolution seems to be messed up and most things appear a bit blurry. Task manager does not show anything under any of its tabs and search is not working at all. Many of the windows functions are not working and it seems that data that was saved in my browsers were completely erased. If anyone has any possible solution for this I'd really appreciate it

I'm a new user and I see some very knowledgeable people here. I'm hoping someone can help with my situation.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit Service Pack 1.

Two days ago I was going to end a process that was not responsive using Windows Task Manager.

When I got into task manager I see two problems and possibly a third.
1) The tab that normally reads "Applications" is now spelled "Applicitions" <- sounds russian
2) The performance tab has NO graphic information (normally I see processor and memory usage graphs)
3) The whole task manager is blinking (by that I mean the box appears to flash on and off of the screen) very rapidly. Almost like it is refreshing itself? Not so much that I can't read what is on the screen.

I use avast! Antivirus, but a scan does not produce any viruses.
I ran Malwarebytes and again the scan does not report problems.
I also ran the TDSSKiller from Kapersky.

I am in the process of running an online scan from ESET.

Can anyone suggest what the problem might be? Could this be a rootkit or stealth application of some sort?

I really don't notice any other problems with the system. But I don't trust what is happening with Task Manager.

A:Suspicious Tabs in Windows 7 Task Manager

Okay, I've done an online scan from about every AV product I trust:

No problems detected at any site.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

I've had this computer off now, except for the time I am troubleshooting problems. I really hate to format before finding where this came from or what the issue could be.

My Task Manager is messed up! It looks like, well, this!

It was normal, I had put my computer into Hibernate which I normally do, and it came up like this!
(Also sorry if this is in the wrong section I couldn't find any section which suits this.)

I HEARD that this is an issue with the built-in motherboard video card and my graphics card driver. turning it off was the only solution i could find, BUT wouldn't that mean that if i reinstalled w7, it wouldn't have video UNTIL i installed my video card driver? Which means it would make reinstalling impossible since it relies on onboard video before it installs?

Please Help!

My computer runs on Windows XP Home.
When I press Alt + Ctrl + Delete, then the Task Manager appears. Before, it used to have all the tabs like "Applications", "Processes", "Performance" etc. Then I think I pressed some wrong button or the other - and all those tabs disappeared. What I get now is a box with no tabs; even the cross to close it, the square to maximise the box and the dash to minimise the box have vanished. What do I have to do to restore the tabs? I tried clicking around but I can't figure it out although I suppose the answer must be simple.
I have attached a picture of a Windows XP Task Manager (found it on the internet - it's not mine!) and what it usually looks like. All the tabs above the box are missing with me.

A few weeks ago the tabs in my task manager dissapeared. I can't get into the process part, to see which processing are running, but More importantly I'm wondering what could have caused this and how to fix it.

I am new on this website and I hope it is something that can help me since I get anxiety attacks when I can't fix a problem. :3-nuts. So hello, out there.

I have a long list of processes constantly running in the task manager window and I am wondering if they are all eating up ram. When I use my old graphics program, microsoft picture it!, I have to change the display settings to the lowest and it still hangs after a while. It's even hard to shut it down at that point. BTW, what is "hijack this log" that I see. I thought it might pertain to what I am asking about---but I dont understand what anyone is asking. (I am only mildly computer literate)

Thanks. Linda

A:task manager processes

I typically have 43 running processes, so specific numbers are relative...said number of processes are without any applications running...

whilst in the task manager, choose the performance tab and observe cpu usage, PageFile usage, Physical Memory to make a judgement as to whether or not you have RAM (memory) issues...as a note, IMHO 1GB of ram is pretty much necessary for a modern day machine running XP and other apps.

HijackThis is a nice little proggie that lists out all running processes (with their paths) and also lets you know what is started up with your machine among other little goodies...

if you really think you have some issues, download it, use it and choose to save a log, and copy and past the log into a post in the appropriate part of this forum
