All of a sudden, my Compaq Presario, Windows XP, won't boot up past the black "COMPAQ" screen. None of the keyboard keys respond (we've tried three different keyboards). All the lights light up when we first turn on the computer, but then it just stops at the black screen with boot options, but none of the keys on the keyboard will do anything. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
Have you tried booting into "Safe Mode" to see if its a software/driver issue?Read other 4 answers
I am trying to get a normal boot from this computer, but I should tell you what has happened. Several years back, I had a guy re-install windows, but....he used an unauthorized (pirated) Windows program that is making it almost impossible to operate properly. I also can not, for some reason "validate" the copy with Microsoft. Is there free utility that I can download online, or anything I can do, while the comp boots up F wise, to rectify this situation? Thanks, in advance. Carl
Here is the support site for the Compaq Presario S3000NX desktop.
It came with Windows XP Home Edition SP1 pre-installed, so it's about 9 - 10 years old.
You can purchase a 6-CD recovery disc kit for it from here for $27.00 plus shipping.
The recovery disc kit will revert it back to its original factory condition with Windows XP Home Edition SP1 and all the software that came pre-installed in it.
Once that's done, you can bring it up-to-date.
Read the site rules.
We don't assist with pirated versions of Windows, so don't expect to get any assistance to resolve your issues - other than what I've already mentioned.
Please help, I have an old Compaq Presario 2700 laptop that didn't work right about a couple of years ago, I figured it was the power supply because the writing on the computer was really hard to see, I put it away for those couple of years, Just recently I bought a new power supply cord for it, It booted up just fine at first, Then I plugged in the Network plug for the internet, It turned off, I took out the internet plug and tried to re-boot it, Now the motor spins like it's trying to boot, Then it just turns off, Can anyone give me an idea about what may be happening here, Thanks in advance?
Couple simple steps to try first:
1. Remove the battery from the laptop, leave the charger connected, try booting up.
2. Remove battery and charger, press the power button for around 15-30 seconds. Reconnect charger and battery, try to boot up.
If the system starts and then cuts off, that normally means hardware failure. The degree of failure is the real question. If it is a CPU or motherboard failure, it probably might not be worth to attempt to revive it. The dim writing, that might be indicative of a failing screen... was the screen working fine with the new charger?
I would try disconnecting the hard drive and optical drive just to see if the system would remain running without them. If you can narrow it down to a bad hard drive or optical drive, those are pretty ease to resolve.
My desktop goes straight to this screen. And nothing else happens.
Some more info would really help. Make and model, what is the screen it goes to?
Can you get to the safe boot menu (F8 on startup)?
I've been using my desktop since 2005 w/ Xp OS (which no longer supports). Since last year OS won't boot up with first try.On first try PSU fan will keep running & running- faster but won't bootup until shutdown power & try 2-3 times, then OS will start & complete the booting process. Recently, noticed it's taking 10-15 times rebotting before you can see the windows coming up & alos noticed the date/time is several years back(probably the battery also dying). Meantine, I tried with different PC Power cable but the same thing. Lately, the Power supply unit seems won't get any power, so, now even PSU fan also won't run & even the green light-not seeing. So, I opened the cover & took out the PSU -opened it & found lots of dust in it-cleaned it & plug into power outlet (alone) & now I see the green light. Bought a new CR2032 battery to install. Do you think I need to change the CMOS postion? Do you think it's PSU problem or it's Mother board problem or Hardrdrive problem? I've lots old data & my little child's sweet memories of pictures & videos. I do not want to loose anything. Your advice is highly appreciated. Thanks.Read other answers
Here's the story:
My Presario 1200 laptop has just recently been crashing out, or shutting down as it boots or shortly thereafter.
The machine will sometimes boot up, get past the compaq screen, get into XP prof. and then without any queue from me, it will make a 'click' sound (sounds to me like a power supply switching off) and the power will go out. It will crash anywhere from the boot up to XP, it seems to be completely random.
I've tried this with both AC and DC power. Both have the same result.
I've tested the RAM here at work (its fine) and pulled out all components that could be draining power or causing a problem (ie. cd-rom, wiFi card, mouse, etc.)
The machine has 3 lights on the front of it for:
1. power on
2. battery light
3. AC light
When the power goes out it leaves the AC light on and flashes the power on light on/off. If i dont pull the power cord out of the back or yank the battery (thus killing ALL power to the machine) the machine wont do anything more (totally unresponsive). If i DO kill power then re-establish it, it will allow me to boot up and it starts all over again.
I'm at my wits end here and anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Sounds like a bad power supply.. I'd RMA it if it's still under warranty.
Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)
Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.
Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more
I've got it figured out, I just took the 1GB RAM stick out, since I won't be needing it once my new 2 GB stick comes in, and it booted up just fine, tested the same stick in both slots to make sure one wasn't bad and its all good now.Read other 1 answers

Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen
Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

How do you access the Bios on a Compac Presario 4110. I keep getting the message 162 Sytems Options not set. 163 Time and Date not set. Having visited Compac they were not a lot of help. Downloading the software recommeded by them was a waste of time, still got the above message. Tried all the usual keystrokes etc no good. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina
does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...
I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide

If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

I have a PIII 733mhz Compaq Presario 5900T that I need some help with.
1st thing is that my harddrive is broken and I am looking into getting a replacement for that, but my question is:
What kind of disks does this computer support?
I tried a 160gb samsung disk, but it hangs at compaq logo screen so I guess it's too big. (hoping to be able to change this through a bios update later)
2nd part is that when I found a matching disk, how will I restore bios on it? I have no restore cds left...and I suppose this computer stores a part of its bios on a hidden partition like all other compaqs.
The 384mb ram limit is fine with me since I am gonna run Linspire linux on it.
Anyone that can help? I tried Compaq support and got no help whatsoever.
Hello. A buddy of mine has an old Compaq Presario 7470 that he is putting a new mobo in. Apparently, the old case has color-coded front panel wires. He has separated the wires and now he does not know which ones go where (in terms of going to reset button, power button, Etc). We have looked everywhere on the net for some sort of schematic for the Compaq case to figure out the color-coded wires. However, not even Compaq site has any info. Also, to note, the wires apparently terminate on some sort of small printed board before going to the lights and buttons. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your help.
The front panel wireing is one problem with trying to put a non Compaq board in a Compaq case . . the power supply may be another . . a lot of the OEM's use a proprietary Power supply with non standard connectors.
You might be able to Google Compaq Front Panel connectors to see if someone has worked it out ( i know of one guy who did for Dell )
He will almost certainly be better off buying a new case for the new board, and using whatever hardware he can with the new system.
Recently took some hits on my Compaq Presario 7478 system. Got two or three nasties via the 'Net. After McAfee's virus scan and removal, began experiencing weird happenings, such as system closing down and restarting. Then just not starting. Tried a few remedies [probably inadvisedly], and finally the system seemed to hang on my restore at the same place repeatedly.
Ultimately the system could no longer establish my OS. Restore failed.
Bottom line: Could not invoke computer restore. Could do nothing with this computer.
Q... Being compaq is the BIOS set to a certain condition that would prevent my reformatting the hard drive and restablishing an OS? Is this an option I can override? If I were to piggy-back the existing hard drive onto an operating hard-drive and reformat would that solve this problem and permit me to then create or repair the hard drive subsequently to get my compaq back?
Sorry this is so wordy...
Have you tried disabling System Restore; then re-enable for a fresh start?
Failing that, format and install OS per instructions in your manual or the CD which came with your computer. If no CD, the OS should be installed in .cab files in Windows Explorer.
The BIOS should already be properly set
i have a question...a while ago my Presario battery died -- it wouldn't charge or discharge, the laptop could only work on the AC, but the indicator showed the correct % of the charge... I bought a new battery and it worked fine for a week, but I decided to reinstall Windows XP, and from then on, it's been a rollercoaster ride for me (( First, it worked fine, but the laptop started to freeze every 20 minutes. I followed the COmpaq's people advice and updated BIOS for some battery controller thing and updated the video driver. From then on, the problems with my new battery just started to overwhelm me First, the battery wouldn't charge when the laptop was ON. Then somehow it did charge. I decided to calibrate it, and now it doesnt want to charge -- on or off. The red light indicating the battery is flashing -- as it's not charging, and the indicator says "0" % of course.
Does anyone have any ideas?? Please? This only started after I reinstalled the Windows, so I am sure it's not hardware or the battery, everything worked just fine ((
Please help me!!!! Thanks... I'm desperate....

I'm trying to reformat my mom's old Compaq Presario SR1303WM. I've set it to boot from the cd-rom and I almost had it. But after deleting the partitions and starting a clean install it would only load the programs to 20%. After that it locked up and wouldn't do anything. I had to shut down and restart.
Now, it won't load from anything. Of course the old OS is gone so it won't start up on the hard drive and it won't boot from the cd. It just keeps going to a black screen with "Error Loading Operating System". Can someone please help me. I know they can't get a new computer and I just want to get a new install on this one to speed it up for them. They had a ton of malware and such on it.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Since HP now owns Compaq, I am not sure what kind of cds you have in order to attempt recovery.
Per HP Support
HP computers that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery information. The use of a separate partition provides a convenient process that eliminates the use of recovery discs that may be lost or scratched. A system recovery from the hard drive may not be possible in some circumstances. Your computer may contain Recovery Disc Creation software. Recovery discs for Windows XP are available from HP for a minimal cost. See Obtaining Recovery Discs for ordering information.Click to expand...
What kind of disk are you using to attempt restore, and are you using HP's support page?
Are you still set to boot from CD and to attempt to do so FIRST?
Is your BIOS properly identifying your hard drive?
What happens if you unplug the data cable from the hd before trying to boot to cd?
Do you have the "Recovery Console" option at some point during boot?

Hello-have prev worked with Compaq tech support 3 sessions but still have same problem with video. Until recently, I could watch MSNBC video OK. Have never been able to watch CNN video. No new software has been added to computer recently. Now, when I click to see video on MSNBC, it acts like it's going to open, then get x in corner and says done in taskbar. Then screen comes up telling me to install free software and a link to windows media player 10. I do this, it loads as it should, and I try to install as normal. At end of installation, it gives me error message from Windows Media Technologies. It says"this version of WMT is incompatible with this version of windows. For more info view the info at the Microsoft website". Have tried this several times. Have gone thru several scenarios with compaq and tried many different remedies. Have tried to uninstall all WMP entirely and reinstall. Many restarts. Disc popup blocker, antivirus, firwall, defrag, run programs that compaq had me try. Same prob now. Have the 8 system recovery disc's from compaq if all else fails but don't want to do that if it can be corrected any other way.
A mate of mine has just bought himself a Compaq Presario and asked me to give him a hand at getting it up & running so I said I would, (really a classic case of the blind leading the blind). hmm system recovery. I'm not too big on using that. My overall suggestion would be go into dos at the startup and do a simpe C:/ format or is it the other way doh... Anyways at startup of windows press oh F8 I believe for systems with win 98 or higher but if you got win95 its either f5 or f8 or you can make a boot disk and do it that way.

There is a 'System Recovery " disk that comes with it but I'm not sure exactlly what that has on it..It does restore the orginal files that were on the computer when it came from the factory so it seems that should be all that is necessary to keep the computer running incase of problems.

is it a prob with the motherboard or hard disk or juz something else....pls pls help!!!!
hmmm, when you formatted the hard drive, did you FDisk it prior? When I worked for Gateway tech support, we had a little saying, "if nothing else, then FFR"... which meant FDisk, Format, THEN reinstall OS, in that order. Give that a shot with a windows ME bootdisk. You can find the download at bootdisk.com

Hello bilmac1. Probably, when Windows was installed, it failed to recongize the BIOS as ACPI compatible. Or simply, APM is not enabled: check under "Power Options Properties" if the tab "APM" exists; if so, check the option "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" (if it's checked, uncheck it, weird as it sounds).Read other 1 answers

Backlight is out no doubt, screen look fine with flash light held up to it? Not much you can do for that, doubtful you can replace that unless you are pretty seriously technical.
I recently bought this machine and at first it worked fine. Last time i used it no probs and even shut it off correctly. The other day I went to turn it on and nothing. The led light that says that it is pluged in is on but now it is not charging the battery. I can get it to come on enough to hear that it is running but it is not booting and the screen remains black. I contacted that previous owner but she said she never had any problems with it. I want to see if it can be fixed, cheeply if possible, befor I do anything else. Thanks for the help.
Sounds like your gonna have to get you hands dirty and take the cover off. Remove the cover and start pulling out parts. ;-)
The best way to troubleshoot a machine is to only boot with the bare requirements.
CPU, RAM, VIDEO CARD...over course power supply...
I'd take out all other parts and PCI card, remove all hard drive cables and floppy cables. Take note which way the RED LINE goes when you put it back together...
If you have MOVED the computer recently, IE transported the computer in the back of your car truck, you might want to try and RESEAT the video card, and RAM. Shipping a computer in the mail and it arriving DOA at the customer more than likely points to a video card that needs to be reseated. Lucky for us, most new motherboard come with AGP slot lock thank goodness...
My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.
This is what it says....
First, if your Presario Notebook is attached to a Port Replicator (QuikDock), you must turn the power to the computer off, disconnect it from the QuikDock, and plug it into an external power socket. Disconnect any printer cables or other peripherals from the computer before using Quick Restore.
1. Insert the Quick Restore CD (bootable disk) in the CD drive, and press Enter. A WARNING message appears advising that you are attempting to totally reformat your hard drive. Confirm by following the next step.
2. Press 1 and then Enter to continue. The Power Quest Quick Restore Wizard starts copying and uncompressing data to the local hard drive. This process takes approximately 7-10 minutes.
This warning message never appears and none of this ever happens. Does anyone know why... Read more

The D: drive is a "restore partition" = RP. This is an exact image of your computer when you first bought it. To use it: When you first start the computer there will be a black screen with probably three different choices of keys to press. One of them will be something like system restore or restore. Hope you get the idea. Select the proper key and follow the onscreen prompts. One other option may be to go to the HP\Compaq (HP bought Compaq) site or call them. You may be able to get the discs for a small fee.Read other 1 answers
Ive been wanting to get my old computer running for awhile. i took it in, to get checked, and the guy said that the hard drive was blown. He told me that i had to get the full quick restore disc set if i wanted to put a new hard drive in to get it working(he said it consisted of 2 discs, he explainted to me why but it went in 1 ear and out the other). Well i called and told them that i need a full quick restore disc set for the model number 5170. I got it in the mail today but there is only 1 disc . Is there really 2 quick restore discs or did that guy have no idea what he was talking about? Also can i just use the 1 quick restor disc to put in a new hard drive and get my comp running again?

I Have a Compaq Presario SR1000 and I ended up getting a virus on the machine. Now I cant boot in to windows or safemode, but I know the harddrive is partitioned.
I dont have the manual or boot disks for the computer anymore, does anyone know the command for these machines to access the partion?
any help would be appreciated.
The manual doesn't say .. But I'd try the F10 key at Bootup.
You can also Email HP support and see if they know ...
... and If you can still get the recovery CDs ..
Does this computer have a sticker on the side .. or somewhere ....
That tells the M$ product code for the operating system installed ???
