All of a sudden, my Compaq Presario, Windows XP, won't boot up past the black "COMPAQ" screen. None of the keyboard keys respond (we've tried three different keyboards). All the lights light up when we first turn on the computer, but then it just stops at the black screen with boot options, but none of the keys on the keyboard will do anything. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
Have you tried booting into "Safe Mode" to see if its a software/driver issue?Read other 4 answers
I am trying to get a normal boot from this computer, but I should tell you what has happened. Several years back, I had a guy re-install windows, but....he used an unauthorized (pirated) Windows program that is making it almost impossible to operate properly. I also can not, for some reason "validate" the copy with Microsoft. Is there free utility that I can download online, or anything I can do, while the comp boots up F wise, to rectify this situation? Thanks, in advance. Carl
Here is the support site for the Compaq Presario S3000NX desktop.
It came with Windows XP Home Edition SP1 pre-installed, so it's about 9 - 10 years old.
You can purchase a 6-CD recovery disc kit for it from here for $27.00 plus shipping.
The recovery disc kit will revert it back to its original factory condition with Windows XP Home Edition SP1 and all the software that came pre-installed in it.
Once that's done, you can bring it up-to-date.
Read the site rules.
We don't assist with pirated versions of Windows, so don't expect to get any assistance to resolve your issues - other than what I've already mentioned.
Please help, I have an old Compaq Presario 2700 laptop that didn't work right about a couple of years ago, I figured it was the power supply because the writing on the computer was really hard to see, I put it away for those couple of years, Just recently I bought a new power supply cord for it, It booted up just fine at first, Then I plugged in the Network plug for the internet, It turned off, I took out the internet plug and tried to re-boot it, Now the motor spins like it's trying to boot, Then it just turns off, Can anyone give me an idea about what may be happening here, Thanks in advance?
Couple simple steps to try first:
1. Remove the battery from the laptop, leave the charger connected, try booting up.
2. Remove battery and charger, press the power button for around 15-30 seconds. Reconnect charger and battery, try to boot up.
If the system starts and then cuts off, that normally means hardware failure. The degree of failure is the real question. If it is a CPU or motherboard failure, it probably might not be worth to attempt to revive it. The dim writing, that might be indicative of a failing screen... was the screen working fine with the new charger?
I would try disconnecting the hard drive and optical drive just to see if the system would remain running without them. If you can narrow it down to a bad hard drive or optical drive, those are pretty ease to resolve.
My desktop goes straight to this screen. And nothing else happens.
Some more info would really help. Make and model, what is the screen it goes to?
Can you get to the safe boot menu (F8 on startup)?
I've been using my desktop since 2005 w/ Xp OS (which no longer supports). Since last year OS won't boot up with first try.On first try PSU fan will keep running & running- faster but won't bootup until shutdown power & try 2-3 times, then OS will start & complete the booting process. Recently, noticed it's taking 10-15 times rebotting before you can see the windows coming up & alos noticed the date/time is several years back(probably the battery also dying). Meantine, I tried with different PC Power cable but the same thing. Lately, the Power supply unit seems won't get any power, so, now even PSU fan also won't run & even the green light-not seeing. So, I opened the cover & took out the PSU -opened it & found lots of dust in it-cleaned it & plug into power outlet (alone) & now I see the green light. Bought a new CR2032 battery to install. Do you think I need to change the CMOS postion? Do you think it's PSU problem or it's Mother board problem or Hardrdrive problem? I've lots old data & my little child's sweet memories of pictures & videos. I do not want to loose anything. Your advice is highly appreciated. Thanks.Read other answers
Here's the story:
My Presario 1200 laptop has just recently been crashing out, or shutting down as it boots or shortly thereafter.
The machine will sometimes boot up, get past the compaq screen, get into XP prof. and then without any queue from me, it will make a 'click' sound (sounds to me like a power supply switching off) and the power will go out. It will crash anywhere from the boot up to XP, it seems to be completely random.
I've tried this with both AC and DC power. Both have the same result.
I've tested the RAM here at work (its fine) and pulled out all components that could be draining power or causing a problem (ie. cd-rom, wiFi card, mouse, etc.)
The machine has 3 lights on the front of it for:
1. power on
2. battery light
3. AC light
When the power goes out it leaves the AC light on and flashes the power on light on/off. If i dont pull the power cord out of the back or yank the battery (thus killing ALL power to the machine) the machine wont do anything more (totally unresponsive). If i DO kill power then re-establish it, it will allow me to boot up and it starts all over again.
I'm at my wits end here and anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Sounds like a bad power supply.. I'd RMA it if it's still under warranty.
Hi all, I'm new here, registered just to get help with my problem. I have a Compaq Presario CQ61-420US Laptop, it will be a year old at the end of April 2011. It has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS. Never had a problem with it till now. I am planning on doing a memory upgrade (currently has 3.0 GB DDR2 PC6400 in 2 slots (1gb + 2gb), ordered a 2.0 GB chip to bring it up to 4.0 GB total memory)
Anyway I wanted to make sure I could do the swap myself so I unplugged the power cord, took out the battery, unscrewed the panel on the bottom of the laptop case, found the memory chips, took out both chips very carefully, undoing the tabs holding the chips in, took them out, inspected them, put them back in the way I took them out, making sure the tabs on the chips were lined up, maing sure the contacts were making contact. Put everything back together, ordered the new 2GB memory chip.
Today I went to power up the laptop, battery in and power cord plugged in and everything lit up like normal except the screen never came on, the power button stayed lit, the network status light stayed on, the power indicator was lit, two white lights were flashing at the same time every 5 seconds though, which is abnormal, one at the top right of the keyboard which I believe is the Num-lock light and one on the far left of the keyboard which I believe is the Caps-Lock light. And thats it, nothing ever happens it never turns on (blank screen) even after 20 min's. SO I held the power button down til... Read more
I've got it figured out, I just took the 1GB RAM stick out, since I won't be needing it once my new 2 GB stick comes in, and it booted up just fine, tested the same stick in both slots to make sure one wasn't bad and its all good now.Read other 1 answers
Hi, My Computer a Compaq Presario SR1810NX with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 is having an issue with it wont get past the Compaq Logo Screen, like, I press the power button the PC powers on, Fan Speeds up and then slows down as normal, keyboard lights flash as normal and the Compaq Logo along with the v3.48 and ESC = Boot Menu options appear on screen, the things is that it wont get past this screen, it just sits there at the Compaq screen, the keyboard and mouse dont seem to be interacting with the PC since I press ESC or F10 for boot mode or system recovery but the PC wont answer at all, I've already Disconnected power source unplugged mouse, keyboard all but PC is doing the same thing just sitting at the Compaq Logo Screen, the computer doesnt make any sound at all no beeps or anything, it wont let me access Windows at any time, recent installations well could be that I just installed a Mobile Bandwidth Card just a couple of weeks ago, and also just a few days ago I connected my iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen to the computer and the computer wont recognize it at all, not even charging, I know this might be a virus or malicious software, but my computer has barely connected to the internet in the last weeks (I couldn't pay the Internet and I had to use my friend's Mobile Bandwidth Card I mentioned before) all I did while in Internet with the Mobile Bandwidth was some schoolwork and youtube videos, I need help urgently with this since I have to deliver a very important proyect for scho... Try a power drain.
1. Unplug power cord
2. Hold power button in for 60 seconds or more then let go
3. Plug in power cord
4. turn on the power and try to boot to setup (BIOS)
If it enters the BIOS then you should be able to just press F5 to reset to defaults and then F10 to save and exit. The PC should work now.
However, if after the power drain you still can not get in the BIOS than there is a MAJOR problem which would require some type of repair.
i dont know anything about computers so i will need a detailed explanation and i need to know how to fix it!! it just stays on the compaq screen
Before the problem started was anything added to or installed on the system?
Try booting to Last Known Good or Safe Mode.
Restart the computer during the boot process repeatedly tap "F8" you should get
the Advanced Options.
Let us know if able to get the system to boot with either option.

I friend of mine purchased this Presario in 2004. She hasn't had internet since about 2006, so she hasn't had any of the updates since then. I brought her tower home with me since I have internet to load her updates. We're trying to get it internet ready. When I brought it home last week nothing would open. So yesterday she gave me the system recovery disc. I started with the Standard Recovery, but there were too many files that it couldn't recover. So I then decided to do a full recovery. After the full recovery it was rebooting and it told me that not all the system could reload and I couldn't hit okaybecause it wouldn't read / acknowledge my mouse. So, I unhooked her computer and rehooked mine to see what her alternatives were. I found a website, they wanted to know all the things it wouldn't oload. All I can remember is that it was things that could me downloaded later like: Norton, AOL, Adobe, MSN, and QuickTime.
So, I unhoked mine and rehooked her's up (and booted up my laptop). When her's came back up it's saying: NTLDR is missing Pres Control + Alt +Delete to Restart
My question for you is there anyway I can save her conputer? She doesn't have a lot of funds, being a singe mother of a 7 yr old and I'm just a good friend trying to help her out.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide
I decided to see what happened when I ctrl alt delete and then decided to do another recovery. Here's some more info (could not recover errors):

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. IF this screen appears again, follow these steps:

If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

ok I hace a compaq that is all messed up. lets see one day the monitor would not work after a storm. Bought another, For a while the screen would be blue but change back to normal. The pc also would have a hard time starting up after it was in idle. We would do a hard start and for a while that worked. Now when I try to start it it turns on but the monitor says no vga/dvi input. There is also none of the preverable beeps that are supposed to be there so in short (well long)the motherboard is fried? So do I use it as a planter in the yard or is there a way to get it up and running. It runs on XP media center it has a micro ATX form factor motherboard it is also an AMD 64 Anthlon. ram is 256 mb 1Rx16 pc 4200 ddr2 533 mhz. With all that said can I just replace the motherboard and reinstall the reinstallation disks and be up and running? ( if it could only be so easy) What about the cpu. i know many questions here thanks for patients. Please help me. Tina
does your system have agp or pciex (or even pci) slot free? Is the graphics on board? It sounds like a graphics card problem, even if it is onboard. I'd try a replacement card (even if it's just a pci card) and see what happens...
I have purchased a Compaq Presario 600 with an Athlon XP 2200+ processor. I do not have a copy of Windows XP to wipe it with. Is there any way with the installed XP that I can refresh this system and remove data frome previous owners? Or Can I load Win 98?
Compaqs usually have a hidden partition with all the factory loaded software on it in an image format. As long as it does and you can figure out how to access it you could probable do that - but you almost likely need the XP Product key and may need to reactivate XP after the recovery. XP can only be install on one machine at a time - so if they are still using it you are out of luck.
Watch the boot up for any recovery messages or take a trip to www.Compaq.com and look up the info for your make/model.

I have a compaq presario 1650 laptop. It currently has a different language version of W98 installed. I want to format and reinstall the english version. The person I got the laptop from no longer has the compaq installation disk. Is it possible to format the harddrive and reinstall with the drivers that are located on compaq's site?
As long as all the drivers are there, sure.
I've redone plenty of laptop machines. Just make sure the site has drivers for all the parts first, and get them all downloaded before you start.

Do you mean the sound does not work since upgrading to Windows 7?
This is because the existing audio driver is not compatible with Windows 7, and unfortunately HP/Compaq do not have any Windows 7 drivers for the Presario V3417LA. The Windows Vista driver might work. You can download it from here:
Click the 'plus' symbol next to "Driver - Audio", then click "Connexant high-defintion audio driver".
If this driver does not work you will have to use Google Search to try and find one that does.
You really should have checked what drivers were available from the Compaq website before upgrading to Windows 7.
Some older laptops are just not suitable for upgrading to Windows 7 because of possible driver issues.

Thanks for your time.
Well you didn't say it so I will ask. Are you sure the front cover has to come off. Most cases you just remove the screws on the back, remove the back metal shroud, and access the machine from there. A few cases have the front covers come off but the majority don't.

Hello bilmac1. Probably, when Windows was installed, it failed to recongize the BIOS as ACPI compatible. Or simply, APM is not enabled: check under "Power Options Properties" if the tab "APM" exists; if so, check the option "Enable Advanced Power Management Support" (if it's checked, uncheck it, weird as it sounds).Read other 1 answers

The D: drive is a "restore partition" = RP. This is an exact image of your computer when you first bought it. To use it: When you first start the computer there will be a black screen with probably three different choices of keys to press. One of them will be something like system restore or restore. Hope you get the idea. Select the proper key and follow the onscreen prompts. One other option may be to go to the HP\Compaq (HP bought Compaq) site or call them. You appear to have a CQ61 series model, so we need to confirm which one you have.
There should be a dash and additional characters after CQ61.
Hello. A buddy of mine has an old Compaq Presario 7470 that he is putting a new mobo in. Apparently, the old case has color-coded front panel wires. He has separated the wires and now he does not know which ones go where (in terms of going to reset button, power button, Etc). We have looked everywhere on the net for some sort of schematic for the Compaq case to figure out the color-coded wires. However, not even Compaq site has any info. Also, to note, the wires apparently terminate on some sort of small printed board before going to the lights and buttons. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your help.
The front panel wireing is one problem with trying to put a non Compaq board in a Compaq case . . the power supply may be another . . a lot of the OEM's use a proprietary Power supply with non standard connectors.
You might be able to Google Compaq Front Panel connectors to see if someone has worked it out ( i know of one guy who did for Dell )
He will almost certainly be better off buying a new case for the new board, and using whatever hardware he can with the new system.

Not sure if anyone can help here but worth a try.
I brought a new compaq presario desktop pc just before xmas. I got sick of all thier crap on it so I re-installed with another copy of windows xp prof sp2. Now I am having problems and want to go back to the original installation on the compaq.
Didn't do any restore disks as no-one explained this to me then. The install partition is still on the compaq but when I load up comp and try to press F10 to do it, it doesn't work (just keeps loading into windows). I can not figure out how to get the reinstall to start and am not sure how to do it manually. My brother has tried to manually start it in windows but it doesn't like this. Have tried changing the boot drive using the Esc and F1 keys as per start up options but it has the drive as grouped and can not specify H drive (where compaq restore is).
Any suggestions welcomed before I have to find more money to buy disk!
My brother has suggested that maybe we can delete the c drive partition therefore forcing the h drive to run, but want to leave this as a last result in case it doesn't work.
Thanks to anyone who reads this.
Ok Frad, if you want to restore the system to the way it was when you purchased it, the best way is to place the restore cd in your drive and restart. when the option comes up press what ever key you ned to to enter setup. scroll through the setup untill you can change the boot options. place the cd drive as your 1st boot option. when you have done that, save and exit setup. when the system reboots, you will be given the option to restore. READ THE WARNINGS CAREFULLY, THIS WILL FORMAT THE HARDRIVE AND ERASE ALL THE DATA THAT YOU HAVE. I recomend that you burn a copy of all your important files prior to doing this and good luck.
I've searched this site, I've asked HP/Compaq, and I've checked search engines but still don't have an answer, so wondering if I can find it here.
I have a Compaq Presario 700 with what I believe is a dead hard drive. I want to replace it, but not sure if it is necessary to copy the files from the drive first. I don't think it's possible, as the drive doesn't seem to work at all. Can I replace it with a new (upgraded) hard drive and just run the original Windows QuickRestore discs, or is there something more to it that I would need?
Here's what happens: I switch the laptop on and it wants to start up, but then, before Windows is running, the hard drive begins it's lovely scraping and clunking noises and I eventually get a black screen with plain text saying windows had to shut down... and is beginning dump of physical memory. Of course, this all started after some fool (maybe me, maybe not) dropped the laptop.
Every site I've checked says I'll need to create a backup of all files before replacing the hard drive. I didn't have anything on there that I need to save, so am wondering if I can just run the QuickRestore and get back to business as usual.
Welcome to the TSG forum.
Which Compaq Laptop ???
Have you backed up all your personal Data ??
Yes .. just put in a new HD .. and run the recovery CD/DVDs
This'll put it back to the way you bought it .. assuming no other problems.
I have an Compaq Presario 5724 that I FDisked and reloaded Win98 SE on. There are some components that are not working and I need drivers for. I have been to the Compaq site, but they have 2 or 3 different drivers for all the interfaces.
How can I find out which video, sound, modem are in the thing? Or, do I have to download all of the listed drivers and try them one at a time?

I have a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop that won't come out of hibernation. With either the battery or A/C cable the power on light on the keyboard will come on after the power switch is pressed and a couple of seconds of clicks from the vicinity of the 3 1/2 floppy or the hard drive area but nothing else - no beeps or anything on the screen.
I talked to Tech support (I am out of warranty) and tried their suggestions - removing all power and pressing the power button and then reinserting the battery; turning it off, removing power for 24 hours and then turning it back on.
One suggestion I had from another source was to remove the CMOS battery but I can not figure out how to access that part of the case. I can get to the hard drive but not the battery.
Any suggestions or directions on removing the CMOS battery?
Related to the problem that I posted about here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic141683.html, this is a little more urgent. The Compaq will frequently, sometimes regularly lock up: screen freezes, neither mousepad nor keyboard respond, and the harddisk parks the heads. Lately, it locks up when it's on the charger, and then is fine (at least, so it seems) when on battery-power. It's also sensitive to being touched--not bumped, it's that unpredictable. Sometimes, I can move it around without problem, other times, if I even touch it, it freezes.
The fans still run like normal, so I don't think that it's overheating. I'm afraid it's a motherboard issue, which I wouldn't be surprised at, considering that it's about 6 years old.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I need to completely reformat my compaq presario but have no idea how to format it since it is using vista. help help me do it step by step. thank you.
1. turn on computer and tap on F11 repeatedly until the Compaq screen disappears
2. click Advanced Options
3. select system recovery (may say restore the computer to factory settings)
and click recover without backing up files, click next
It will do the rest on its own.
Do this with ONLY mouse, keyboard, monitor and power attached. If you added any parts inside other than ram you will need to remove them to ensure it works properly.
Just throwing this out in case someone can help
I have a Compaq Presario 5461 and when the hard drive crashed I got a new hard drive off ebay (same model the pc came with). When I try to use the compaq restore disk, i get an error that pretty much says restore can't be run on that machine. I realize that these restore disks are somehow keyed to the machine so you can't use them on another machine, but all the hardware is the same except for a little more memory. Only thing I can think of is a bios update that I applied. Did that alter the "signature" of the PC. If so, would it work if I backed of the bios update?
At this point the pc is just a toy, i'm using it to learn more about hardware, etc. I was able to install windows and just used my license key that came with the computer, so thats not an issue. But it bugs me that I can't get this restore to work. I did also notice that PC does not have an asset tag - wondering if the bios update zapped that.
Other notes - there was no extra partition that I know of on the orig hard drive, and there is only one restore CD (no diskette). I was able to do a restore of the pc several years ago
so I am pretty sure the disk is not defective.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated
a different hard drive than the one the pc came with shouldn't alter the restore process.
What error is it giving you?

With Pentium III 550Mhz processor I hear that I can up grade the processor to 1100 Mhz but I still need some information a bout the processor like the type of socket and the cache memory and if I can just buy a processor and install it normally without contacting Compaq service
You'd probably need a Socket 370. I don't think the Tualatin based P3's would work for you. They are the ones with 512k L2 cache. You'd need a regular Coppermine based P3. (256k L2)
Hello! I am attempting to change a 80mm fan in my Compaq computer. The fan I want to change is, I believe, called the CPU fan. It has a lever next to it and 4 screws holding it down. My question is this: Do I have to move the lever on the side of the fan in order to pull the fan up and proceed to remove the screws or do I just remove the 4 screws? Also, how do I remove the screws considering the awkward position they are in? (I've been working on trying to remove the screws; however, it is difficult to maneuver the screwdriver into the top of the screws to remove them. This is because part of the fan case is above the screws making it necessary to place the screwdriver sideways in order to remove the screws.) Thank you for your response.Read other answers
i have apresario 972 its old but good its just a pen. would like to update to a pen.3 or 4 the mother board is a compaq. thats about all i know about it.
Can't be done. It is probably some proprietary motherboard if it's a Pentium. If the motherboard is ATX you might....I said might be able to upgrade to a newer ATX motherboard. You will also need a new Power Supply, processor, memory and possible new graphics adapter.
I have a Compaq Presario running xp professional with a phone jack for internet connection(no Ethernet port). I would like to connect it to my att frontier modem that uses cat 5. I bought a j5 jue130 gigabit Ethernet adapter(that has a j45 to usb).I would like to know if this computer is capable of connecting to my service and if so how do I configure my computer. I loaded the correct driver for the adapter but can't get connection.
Have you looked at using the computer with a wireless connection from your modem ?
Check with your Internet Service Provider for setting it as wireless.. Who is your ISP ?
Any Good ?
My landlady's Compaq Presario SR1103WM is acting up and I'm pretty certain it is the PSU going out because the symptoms are the same as my PC had when it's PSU went belly up on me. It starts booting up fine until Windows XP Home starts loading, than it resets. I used a WinXP disk to repair the boot files and MBR with no effect, so we decided to reinstall Windows (been needing to do that anyway). Before doing that though, I was going to try recovering pictures of her grandkids by using a Linux Live CD, and ran into the same problem with it, so that eliminated Windows problems.
To the best of my knowledge, that leaves the PSU (likely) or the memory (possible) as the probable causes. I running Memtest86+ on it tonight to eliminate that cause.
Please correct me if I'm wrong in my diagnosis or if I am missing anything, but if I'm right about the PSU, that brings me to my main problem. I have heard that many Compaq models have proprietary PSUs so that you can't use off-the-shelf parts to replace them and have to buy one from them at a higher price. Is that the case with this model or can I order one from Newegg? I looked up the PC on Compaq's web site, and it didn't even say what PSU it has.
Thank you in advance.
Memtest86+ has compleated 34 cycles with zero errors. Looks like it is the PSU.
We have a very old Presario 4550, connected to an old cathode tube display and we also can't find a functional printer with old fashioned connectors. There are two USB ports on the back of the tower - could we connect a more modern display and printer to this tower using the USB ports?
Hi there @stevekra, May the Forums be with you! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I understand that you are looking for help with the a printer for your older model computer. I am happy to help with this. I am assuming the printer connection type you are looking for is an old parallel or Centronics connection. That connection type is no longer being used in newer printers, and as far as I know has not been for many years, having been replaced by USB, Ethernet and Wireless connections. Any printer with a Centronics connector is going to about as old as the computer you are working with. Now it is possible you can get a printer with a USB connection to work, but depending on what operating system you have installed and the capabilities of your USB ports this may also be an issue. Your system is likely using USB 1.x ports, whereas the current standard is 2.x or 3.x. Your hardware and/or OS may not be able to recognize newer devices, and the drivers avaialbe for those devices may be for Windows 8.x or 10. I am not saying it is impossible, but that you are going to have some forseeable challenges getting devices to work. You may find that you will need to make a wholesale upgrade to the system to work with newer devices, and it may be better to look at a newer system. Just my two cents. Please let me know whether that works for you, a... Read moreRead other 2 answers
