Thinkpad x240s motherboard replacement

Q: Thinkpad x240s motherboard replacement

Hi everyone, I want to replace my Thinkpad x240s motherboard. I have been searching online but can't find one to buy. All the motherboards are for x240. I therefore want to know if I can replace the motherboard on my x240s with that of an x240. Thanks a lot

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First time poster here, so please go easy if I haven't posted entirely correct. I'm a 2nd user owner of a Thinkpad x240 20am model, which was found to be completely unresponsive the morning after an overnight electrical storm while recently on holiday in greece. During the storm, the machine was in sleep mode but charging via the power adapter. I assume the machine might have suffered a power surge via the power adapter, as there were no other connections (ie no network cables or peripherals).Since then the machine has been entirely unresponsive and the power button has been unlit. I have tried to follow the usual advice, ie remove the battery and power via a new power adapter, and/or holding the button down for periods up to 60 seconds etc, but the machine seems completely dead and I strongly suspect I will need to replace the systemboard. The systemboard in place at the moment is a 04x5150 model, but I'm wondering if I could use a x5166 model that I've seen on-line at a more competitive price? Both seem to be for the same CPU. The OS on my machine had been upgraded to Windows 10 rather than the Win 7 Pro originally fitted and the HDD replaced with an SSD too. If relevant I had also added an Intel AC wifi card in the M2 slot. Thanks.

Yes, you can use any X240 motherboard, there is a list of FRu numbers for X240 models here: click me! (Check page 2, title "PLANARS")

I was of the opinion that a motherboard change has an impact on the Win10 key, I'm not sure if you can reuse the key you originally had. But I'm not 100% sure about this, let's see if another forum members knows better.

Good luck with your purchase! And if you have any problem or question do not hesitate to post it here in the forum.

I've been having some issues with my T520i over the past few months. I replaced the palmrest assembly as well as the Touchpad Sensor Mouse Board and keyboard. Sadly, the touchpad didn't work and only some of the keys of the keyboard worked. I replaced the palmrest assembly, Touchpad Sensor Mouse Board, the cables and the keyboard twice but the problem persisted so I think it might be an issue with the motherboard. I don't have the skills to fix the motherboard myself so I am going to buy a replacement motherboard from eBay or somewhere. But before I shell out $100 I would like know if there might be something I'm overlooking. Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know the difference between FRU 04Y2001 and FRU 04Y2003? They're both motherboards for L430 (without the daughter cards for USB, VGA, DP etc). I've managed to destroy a 04Y2001 (by using pliers trying to loosen one of the internal screws, and thus managing to damage both BT and audio ports), but was only able to get a hold of a 04Y2003. By looking at photos of both motherboards, they looked exactly the same, apart from a few of the transistors/resistors that have different markings on them. The two smaller grey ones next to the CPU socket:04Y2001 has R42A, 6J, 303 on them04Y2003 has R26H, E24X on them. And the larger grey one, also next to the CPU socker:04Y2001 has R36, 347, 6LL04Y2003 has R36W, 4C, 3116J And, darn it, I've just noticed that two smaller grey ones next to the chipset also have different markings on them (suprisingly,  larger grey one next to the chipset has the same marking on both 04Y2001 and 04Y2003): 04Y2001 has 2R2, 3110104Y2003 has 2R2H, IE08 Also, the large grey one next to the memory slot (smaller one has the same marking on both 04Y2001 and 04Y2003): 04Y2001 has R56, 347, 9HA04Y2003 has R56, 329, 8L6 All the MHz, V(oltage) and A(mperage), KHz markings on both motherboards are exactly the same. Also, by checking the Lenovo's partslookup webpage, I've found following info for both FRUs: 04Y2001:Cardiff-1 FRU Planar Card Asm HM76 Integrated 14W Dock, WWAN Y-TPM/N-ILSSubstitutes:04W3562 Cardiff-1 FR... I recently bought a ThinkPad X240s with Windows 10 installed by the previous owner. I installed the Lenovo Settings app, which works well except for one thing: Every hour or so, a message pops up saying that Battery 2 is not installed. The X240s has only one battery - there is no battery 2, and no way to install battery 2. Is there any way to tell Lenovo Settings that this machine has only one battery? Or is it possible to file a bug reporting this problem? Windows 10 is definitely supported by Lenovo on the X240s, so I hope this can be fixed. Thanks for any help or advice.

(Just posting this here so people in the future can find it.) I replaced my motherboard and just wanted to leave this here for future reference to some poor soul who has to do the same.
If you replace the motherboard on your Dell Studio XPS 8000, (service tag 3L8DHK1) and you need a new motherboard you can use an INTEL DQ57TM, it's compatible and I did a successful transplant. Your processor is an INTEL Core-i5 750 CPU 2.67GHZ it uses a SOCKET LGA1156. It uses DDR3 memory.
Once you take out your old motherboard and disconnect all those usb and audio wires and the power button wires. To hook up your USB front jacks, audio jacks etc.... here's which blocks go where:
Wires from the audio jacks and usb ports go into these colored block connectors, and those connectors get plugged into those little rows of pins/jumpers called Internal Headers. Every motherboard manual tells you about them. Grab the manual for your new motherboard and it'll tell you where your audio1, usb1, usb2, usb3, usb4 Header connectors are they look like 2 rows and 5 collumns of short little pins. (They almost always have 1 or 2 pins missing on purpose.)
the wires leading to a YELLOW BLOCK gets plugged into the audio1 header on your new motherboard, it's for audio jacks on top of the computer
wires with the WHITE BLOCK gets plugged into the usb3 headers on your motherboard (they are for the usb jacks on the very top of the computer tower)
wires with the GREEN BLOCK gets plugged into ... Read more

I have a cracked 14.1" LCD for an IBM ThinkPad T30. I have two questions:

1.) Where can I find a reasonably priced, properly working replacement?
2.) Current resolution is 1024x768. Can I buy a 1400x1050 and put it in? What else would I need to update if it did that (drivers and/or video card)?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately my screen got a crack at the top while holding my P50 at the top of the lid to transport it between two desks. Had never happened to me before with other Thinkpads but apparently the P50 lid chassis has more flex. In any case, I need to replace my screen. Since the P50 is relatively new there is little information available. Let's start a thread. According to the P50 hardware maintenance manual replacement does not look too difficult:http://ok1.de/thinkpad/HMM/p50_hmm_en_sp40j71944.pdf Here the info taken from AIDA:Monitor ID LEN40BAManufacturer LP156WF6-SPK1Manufacture Date 2015 More info about LP156WF6-SPK1 can be found here:http://www.panelook.com/LP156WF6-SPK1_LG%20Display_15.6_LCM_overview_27076.html I always hated this screen as it has much lower brightness than what I previously had in my W530 and can hardly be used in sunlight and I had thought about the possibility of replacement before. So if I already have to replace it for mechanical reasons, I am wondering if I can get something better.  I definitely want FHD  antiglare. LP156WF6-SPB1 looks as if it would be compatible and has better brightness and color gamut: (300cdm 72% vs 250cdm 45% CIE1931):http://www.panelook.com/modeldetail.php?id=24180 Any ideas about possible problems with compatibility? Any comments?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

On my experience changing parts with Thinkpads the best way to replace a part is to visit the support site of the machine model and check the hardware maintenance manual just to lean how to dissasembly the device.

Also on the "support site - Documents" there are the part number list for the screen:

LCD Service Parts (non-touch) - ThinkPad P50

LCD Service Parts (touch) - ThinkPad P50

Check the PDF on that pages to know the exact part number that you need .
Once you found the part number of the part that you need to can check several online sites to see if they have it available online.

And just in case you can use the "Parts lookup" page to see it Lenovo changed the part number .
http://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ec/en/partslookup

I hope this gives some hints on how to look for Thinkpad parts.

Regards

I am looking to replace the internal battery for a Thinkpad X1 laptop.  the Model number is 1294AY2.    This is an older model with the internal battery.   The current battery appears to be a 4 cell, and I can find replacements online.  I thought I read an early review that mention an extended life 6 cell for the internal battery.  Is this an availbale part number? The installation process for the internal battery seems a little more involved.  Is there a recommendation on how to best do this without any permanent damage.  Is there an official repair manual that is available to the pulic? Since this unit is out of warranty, I assume that it is not a option available by sending the unit to Lenovo for service. I am curently getting about 3.5 hours battery life now, and the system reports 30,740mWh, compared to 38,920 rated capacity.  Can I assume that the battery has degraded by roughly 25% by comparing the 2 number, or is it a more involved calculation? Ideally I get 5-6 hours of life, and I am considering adding a "battery slice" instead of changing the internal battery. BATTERY 1NAME42T4977MANUFACTURERSMPSERIAL NUMBER472CHEMISTRYLiPDESIGN CAPACITY38,920 mWhFULL CHARGE CAPACITY30,740 mWhCYCLE COUNT-

My daughter's G41 hard drive bit the dust and I volunteered to replace it for her.  I researched the drives that are supported but none of them I found attractive (noise or price).  My preference is for a WD120 G drive.  Since I believe that the firmware must be loaded onto the hd initially (according to the documentation) and the only hd's supported ar hitachi, fujitsu and seagate, amI looking for trouble if I install the WD and want to use R&R.  I had to order a replacement Recovery CD since she had lost hersin a tornado hit their home in FL a couple of years ago.  Any thoughts on my intent?  One other is that the specs only mention up to 1G in 2 512MB DIMMs.  I noticed that at least one of the posts indicate 2G installed. Thanks for any suggestions or warnings. Its a 2886-5TU purchased in early 06.  Mfg in 05/06 Joe

Welcome to the forum! Any PATA/IDE drive will work in your G41, don't worry about the firmware update which is nice but really not required. Your machine will take up to 2Gb of RAM, tested and have proven it myself. The only reason why official IBM documents say that the maximum is 1Gb is the fact that at the time of the announcement of the G series, the largest single DIMM was 512Mb. Hope this helps.

Hello everybody, do you know if the internal HDD/SSD provided with the new Thinkpad Yoga 12 2015 can be replaced by myself? And if this operation is possible, is it simple to proceed ?I used to replace HDD by SSD on my MacBook pro laptops, it is very simple.  As the internal HDD and SSD provided are not the best ones (the Thinkpad SSD are considered as to be slow), i want to replace the HDD/SSD by a Samsung 840 Pro. Thanks a lot for your reply

Hi,

The base spec and hardware maintenance manual should help with this.

Base Spec

(English) Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad Yoga 12

Please note that neither the 2.5 inch HDD/SSD or m.2 SSD are listed as self-service CRU (customer replaceable unit) or optional-service CRU so you may face warranty issues if you attempt this yourself.

Hi Guys, The fan on my laptop had been making an insane amount of noise and the computer had been overheating and shutting down for quite some time.  So finally I took the liberty to order a replacement part from Ebay.  The disassembly was a breeze, the part fit in perfectly and reassembly wasn't bad either.  But when I tried to power up, the fan would spin for a few seconds and then shut down, nothing on the screen.   So by process of elimination, I figured out that if I left the cable connecting the bottom accessories to the motherboard disconnected, it worked fine.  Fan is spinning correctly, no overheating issues.  Of course that leaves with no functioning docstation essentially.  I cannot use the speakers, USB or even the power source from the docking station.   Any ideas here?  Is there a specific pattern that I am supposed to reconnect the cables?  I am attaching a picture with the cable circled in red just for references.  Thanks!

Hello all, Please forgive if this has been posted. I couldn't find an answer: I purchased a replacement for my battery, but on installation it wouldn't charge. I tried disabling AC and battery in device manager. I tried complete shut down and reboot. Couldn't get the new battery to be recognized. The old battery still works a bit, so I'm not in serious trouble. but with the battery going on a few years old, I wanted to replace before it left me stranded. Is there something that must be done to tell the system (Win 8.1 x 64 pro) to recognize that the battery is new, and to reflash the battery firmware and reset the driver? Simply replacing the battery didn't quite get the job done. Thank you for any response.

We own a L430 which we bought cca. 4 years ago. In the meantime, we've dropped it (right lower corner on the back of the screen is where it hit the floor) and since then the screen has developed lines/distortions which would go away after flexing the entire screen assembly back and forth. We've opened the laptop at least a dozen times to try and fix it permanently, but that would work only for a limited period. Now, we've decided to either buy a replacement screen assembly (meaning, LCD panel, both front and back bezels including all the cables) or a used L430. Our L430 has the 1366x768 resolution and has a webcam. We were wondering, if we purchase a used L430 that doesn't have a webcam, could we remove the webcam and front screen bezel from our L430 and install it into the L430 that doesn't have a webcam? Also, if we buy a L430/screen assembly with a different resolution (e.g. 1600x900), can we just swap it with the one in our L430 which has a lower resolution? Or do we need to swap LCD cables/ribbons too? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I have a s230 u that I dropped so HDD has crashed and going to replace it with another hdd (presuming cost is much less than a SSD) and don't know which make, model would work (assuming ebay is easiest to buy a replacement). How do i know what makes and models would fit/work ie just plug it into the slot. The current HDD is a Hitachi HGST HTS725050A7E630 2.5 SATA thin 500GB 7200RPM which i think is 7mm. So I could buy the exact same make and model or buy a newer one from Hitachi/other vendors. So trying to figure out which ones will work and also where to buy cheapest one (other than ebay) (and what I need to check before buying, assume 2.5 inch and SATA and any HDD should work?) Thanks Shriram

Part number 00JT241 - where can I order them? Two of the rubber feet from my Yoga S3 14 have repeatedly fallen off, this time they are lost. For some reason I expect a business laptop to be built for standard use, such little problems make for big annoyance. I need replacements, have a part number, but can't find a source - and I don't expect to buy a housing for my laptop to replace tiny rubber parts because Lenovo used an inadequate glue. I've had terrible experience with Lenovo customer service, especially in connection with a laptop I bought for my daughter, which was held in service for 5 WEEKS!!! and returned with no repair other than a reformatted hard drive. I had to get very loud in order to get the machine back at all. This is unacceptable, and can only make good business customers look for other manufacturers. Lenovo, are you listening?
