That CONSTANT BLINKING problem.

Q: That CONSTANT BLINKING problem.

Hi folks. I'm sure many of you will have come across this 'problem' before.

My hard drive light CONSTANTLY blinks, every second. It is VERY annoying. I have searched, searched and SEARCHED AGAIN for solutions (for years, also had it on old XP machines), and no matter what people say it could be in literally thouasands of threads/replies I've found over the years no one HAS CURED IT OR FOUND OUT WHAT IT IS. Some people call it the 'heartbeat'. I call it a c***.

HELP, this is now driving me slightly crazy!!!!! SOMEONE somewhere MUST KNOW!!!

Preferred Solution: That CONSTANT BLINKING problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: That CONSTANT BLINKING problem.

Even when you are not actively doing anything, the hard drive will remain active, because of background programs and OS activity. As far as I know, there is no way to totally make the hard drive inactive, without disabling it, or shutting down the computer. I'm assuming that the activitity light is the one indicating activity on the hard drive where the OS resides.

If you feel that the amount of activity is abnormal, then check it with Process Monitor:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/bb896645

If that doesn't explain it, then start checking with security scanners for malware, trojans, etc.

...in one of the 'other' forums, you know..., an OP about this subject was given all kinds of information and a lot of misinformation, including 'veteran' posters TELLING the OP to just live with it and stop complaining. Can you believe it? Sounds like some political dialog, instead of...

(I won't register for 'their' forum because the last time I did, a few years back, I was INSTANTLY hit with a wave of spam that didn't stop. Had to change my address.)

One poster said it was the system's 'heartbeat,' seriously.

Anyway, I was totally annoyed with my hdd led blinking constantly, and then I discovered a suggestion by Mike M999 in one of the 'other' forums that if you disabled the cd\dvd in device manager it might go away.

Instant cure for me.

But I'm repeating this here, even though someone commented with this solution in the general forum some time back, because what I noticed is that the device driver for this new model of LG CD\DVD Writer, so new, that its model isn't even listed on their web site.

The properties for the driver in device manager of this CD\DVD Writer shows that it was written by MS back in 2006!

I have three LG CD\DVD Writers that I bought over 2004-5 and there aren't any LG drivers for them now. I wonder if MS's 2006 driver would have worked. No big deal, as this new writer only cost $16+. Can you believe that we had to pay more than $300 for drives like this not too long ago.

So, I go to LG's support page and input my data and squeeze my email mess... Read more

A:Blinking hdd light WAS constant...

Do you know if the problem only affected certain LG drives?

I have 6 of them spread across 6 computers, and IIRC, I think I saw this symptom on one of the PCs. But I reinstalled the OS for other reasons and the problem went away.

Customer service isn't what it used to be.

Hi there!

Yesterday Amazon sned me my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and I installed the 64bit right after I saved my profile with the Windows EasyTransfer tool. Everything was migratet - perfect!
After installing iTunes I checked if my library was there as well: phew, it was there. Then I started to listen to my music and every minute or so the sticked iTunes icon started to blink and depending on the other windows in the foreground, iTunes was suddenly in the foreground. You can imagine how distrurbing this is.

Anyone of you has an idea what is causing this?

OK so here is the deal. THis computer was booting fine and loading in windows. THe problem it had was it was too slow with all the spyware and i decided to give it a format. Windows 98 is the operating system.
The pc is a pentium 3 and was working fine until i cleared the cmos. Now after it loads teh ram, finds primary and secondarary devices instead of going to the next step the screen gets stuck on a black screen with a blinking "_" at the top. From then on the keybaord doesn't work anymore, cause i try rebooting usingt he control alt del, but in vain. Also the f8 key doesn't work.
What i tried is i removed the hdd and tried to boot from it on another pc, and it worked fine, I also had another cpu and i exchnaged it with the one on this pc to see if the cpu was the problem and still the same problem. I kinda know the prob is with the settings in the bios but i don't know what i should set. I would normally keep a copy of the setting but this time i didn't. So what i did was set the date and and the rest of the settings i loaded the defaults. But still i get a blank screen with a _ at the top. Normally i would set the cpu speed and the voltage. The prob is i tried all the cpu speed but it made no differnce ,a and i have't found the option for the voltage. Any suggestions? cause i'm basically just lost!

My monitor will blink randomly, and usually come right back on, but sometimes it will be off for 10 secs or more.

Hardware:

umm... not sure about the motherboard, I'm not at home. But it has PCIe, DDR3, Socket 775
550W PSU (came with the case, not sure what exactly...)
Intel Q6600 Quad Core
Corsair 6GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX hooked up via HDMI to a 32" HDTV.

Now, the only thing that has changed is the mobo and ram. I haven't updated the BIOS on the mobo yet, but I suspect that may be the issue. I have the latest drivers and updates for vista.

Anyone had problems with a blinking screen before? I've been told it may be that the video card is overheating... that's not it, because this happens under no load at all.

I've also heard it could be the PSU, but I had no problems like this for 4 months before I replaced the MOBO and RAM.

I appreciate any help.

With a brand new computer, I would find it infuriating, not just annoying. Is the monitor new too?

First, make sure all the cable connections for the monitor are tight to the graphics card and on the back of the monitor. If tight, then swap monitors. If no spare monitor, most modern TVs support computer input. It is best if you can use the same video interface (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, etc.).

If the problem happens on the spare monitor, you know the problem is in the computer. If the spare monitor works fine then the problem is most likely the original monitor.

I note you have "MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6GB" listed twice above. Are you running with 2 cards?

Dear Bleepingcomputer Forumites:

I have had this problem off and on for 3 months: my cursor on my PC (a 2006 Dell Inspiron 710m) frequently has an incessantly blinking hourglass attached to it. At the time this first happened, the problem seemed to appear out of nowhere; I hadn't made any strange changes or downloads that might have explained it. I am running Windows XP Professional. I've run an updated version of Trend Micro PC-cillin and it says that my computer is clear of viruses. I downloaded the Microsoft Autoplay Repair Wizard, but when I run the "repair" wizard it tells me that it can't fix the problem. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance, landy223.

A:Blinking Hourglass Cursor Problem

Hi and Welcome to BC,The blinking hourglass (replacing your cursor) usually means that Windows is waiting for a program or process running in the background to finish doing whatever it is doing.A couple of questions come to mind:How long does this condition last? Is it a few seconds or several minutes?Do you know what processes are running at the time this occurs? Is your computer running slower than it used to?Is your hard drive almost full?Do you have more than one Anti-Virus or Firewall running at the same time? You may have found a hijacker that is along for the ride that your Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware programs are just not finding. Not all of them find all things, all of the time. Certain versions do a much more complete job than others. There are morespecialized products that find only specific types of malware. Trend Micro is a good program but it isn't the only one out there.

Hi, i'm suffering from a problem, my computer's screen used to work properly and now suddenly stopped working properly, it's blinking with lots of squares, cubics, here's a picture of what it looks like, any ideas? I've tried restoring the system 24 hours back, didn't help.

A:Screen problem, cubes,blinking.

How long ago did the problem start, and do you know of anything that may have changed, in between then?

My first recommendation would be to ensure that your video cable is securely connected. Also, try wiggling the cables, and notice if the squares change or go away.

Hello Guys,

I have an Asus X50Z Notebook with a strange Problem.
When it is turned on ( via Power Cable or Battery) , the power light and other lights do come on but NO Display on the LCD:
The FAN does not SPIN most times (it does spin ,sometimes when left for about 5 minutes ....and stops again, with no Display on the LCD )
I have tried Basic Troubleshooting .....removed the battery and held the power Button for 30-60 Seconds and and turned it ON with the Charger and also with Battery inserted but problem persists.
I would like to know if this is a GPU related problem or something else .

Your advisory feedback shall be appreciated.

RFH = Request for Help

Hi Everybody,

A friend asked for help with her machine and I haven't been able to figure out how to resolve the problem. I'm hoping somebody here could help.

Apparently there was a strange problem, that caused her to go through vista installation again. Instead of choosing a repair they chose a new install so they have a Windows.old directory now. So their data is safe, and I backed it up.

The big problem now is that after the Dell BIOS screen, it just goes to a blinking cursor in the upper left and I can go no further. F8 doesn't do anything.

I can get into the system if I boot Linux and I can see that the enviornment is a fresh vista install when it comes to programs and layout.

I downloaded and ran the repair disk. The tests look fine, but I never went for the long tests. I ran pretty much every option with bootrec. Strangely bootrec only sees the Windows.old directory as the valid install.

I think the problem might be that one thing points to Windows.old\Windows and something else is pointing to \Windows.

Any idea on what I could do to fix this (being able to boot into windows with a Linux CD), save reinstalling Vista on a clean harddrive?

Hello.

I have read a couple of articles about the same problem. Mine is a little different situation. Everytime the amber light is blinking on the power button, I pull all cords like monitor, speaker, and etc out of the wall outlet except the power supplier. It works everytime. As soon as the cords are out, the amber light become a green right.

This why I am confusing to find a problem. Do you think it is a M/B problem or Power supply problem?

If PSU made the problem, I would like to replace the whole case as normal tower style. I look up a couple of cases on ebay but the back side of the case, in which all connectors like monitor,USB, and printer on M/B are, does not match with an original M/B shape.
Anyone has an experience with replacing a case?

I have a tablet which I love to use for Photoshop work.. It works great except that some one at Windows decided that it would be a good idea to have animated cursors. A ripple effect occurs everytime I click and animated circle show up everytime I right click or hold down the cursor.

Working with artwork these effects are incredibly ANNOYING, esp since I am clicking all the time and these effects ubstruct my view! Not to mention they are completely useless. I think I know when I am right clicking or clicking and don't see why I need this annimation to tell me that.

Does anyone know where I can turn these effects off? I looked in the control panel under Pen and touch but I couldn't find anything.

I do not think these effects should be standard in the Windows Seven Release. Perhaps they can be truned on as an accesibility feature for those who want it.

Best

I don't think it's accessible via the Pen and Touch options, or even in the WACOM pad's own interface
- try in the Control Panel under Mouse..

one of the options under "Pointers" is to "Allow Windows themes to change mouse pointers"
- it's done by un-ticking that box near the bottom..

2) Intalled new instance of the OS (on the same partition "C")
3) Ran Dell hardware diagnostic test on the hard drive - No Errors reported !!

I am thinking there is some kind of a bood sector problem. Need some help (instructions and/or tool(s) to fix the problem.

End objective desired:

a) Repart original installation of the OS (have lots of apps and settings to loose)
OR
b) Copy "documents and settings" folder at least from the current installation on C Drive.

I recently dualbooted Linux Mint and Windows 7 on my laptop. Yesterday I removed the Linux partition without thinking, and forgetting about the GRUB bootloader. I'm at a stump now. When I try and turn on my computer, the Toshiba logo appears, then the screen goes blank with a blinking cursor. I searched the internet all of today and most of yesterday, all that did was tell me to do the bootsect /nt670 /fixmbr and all it's variations.

Thing I've tried:
-Repairing it using install DVD
-Bootsect/Bootrec (used any option that would help, none did)
-Reinstalled Mint (GRUB loader reappeared, was able to boot Windows 7 loader, but when I did it went back into the blank screen)
-Reinstalled Windows 7 (didn't help)

Another problem is, when I click on repair, it shows with 3 different Windows 7 installs, Windows 7, Windows 7, and Windows 7 Home Premium. All say they are located on my primary partition, C:\.

So, is my computer a big paperweight now? Or should I reinstall Linux, boot into it, format my entire system, and reinstall Windows fresh? I have all my important data backed up on an external HD. Thanks
PS I'm running a memory test on my laptop now, I'll post results later if needed.

Hello,
My XPS 13 started to act out pretty strange today. It seems like it doesn't not use battery at all, thus I can only boot it up when it's plugged to the charger. The battery indicator shows that it's NOT charging the battery, and it's stuck at 48%. When I disconnect it from the charger while it's running, it turns off immediately, and the only way to boot it up is to plug it back again. Additionally, the light indicator below the touchpad is blinking rapidly (~3-4 blinks per second) with amber light, both when I'm in OS as well as already on Dell splash screen during boot.
Any ideas on what might be going on ? I have bios 1.3.3 which I updated around April.

Thanks in advance

A:PROBLEM:Cursor blinking continuously and USB not detectin on my laptop :(

The situation is not simple, about the cursor maybe a CPU overlapping/overload and you should check the CPU load or a driver conflict (USB) but it is not clear if these two problems are related.
The first thing to do is simple: shut down your PC, remove the power supply and the battery pack for a few minutes, push the power button for one minute (so without battery), reinsert battery and power on the Pc.

If this step does not resolve the issue, follow this guide (disable and re-enable USB Controller):

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/817900

If unsuccessful, hoping that you have a working OS Image so reinstall Windows.
This is a drastic solution, but have a backup plan is essential.
Hardware problem can be also.

Hello everyone; Because of this problem, I had a notebook changed with the exact same one, for I'd had this problem since the first time I'd turned on the device, and I never solved the issue on that notebook, though I tried many advised solutions on these forums, youtube etc. However, this notebook have come with the same problem. At first time, it seemed like it occurred less than it did on the previous device, and I thought that maybe those solutions would work this time. But it has become more frequent when I have started to run some other applications. I have tried those solutions again; - I have disabled the battery saving modes on Intel Graphics,- I have disabled the adaptive brightness on power management settings,- I have done the BIOS update,- I have done the driver update (done it before but now I also have the problem of updating the driver since the latest update of Windows 10, I can never install a driver update now)- I have disabled the Windows Error Reporting Service and Problem Reports and Solutions Control Panel Support on System Configuration. Despite all these, the blinking never stopped!!! I have been absolutely mad after all these issues. I don't want to make another change of device. There has to be an absolute solution. Please give me a prompt reply. Thank you in advance. *Edited upon wrong usage of vocabulary, sorry..

I have a Toshiba M35 Satalite. There is a set of 3 LED lights just under the cover lock clasp. The one that has a power plug icon on it is blinking fast and the unit will not boot. I searched the manual but there is no mention of what this flashing light means. Could it be an exhaust or shorted out battery? I"ve had this unit torn down many times and have replaced the AC jack twice. Any help would be apreciated.

As I understand, the blinking LED is similar to the Post beeps that occur if you have a small speaker attached to you motherboard.  In theory the blink pattern should provide an indicator as to the cause of the problem.  Would it be possible for you to note down the blink pattern ? Or does it just blink orange all the time ?

Hello,

It's the second time I'm having this issue and it really screw things up. The most visible sympton is at the bottom right of the screen where the little icon keyboard is, net to the langage (me "FR" as "French). Well for some reason it starts to blink. And then I can't do things right. The start menu doesn't stay open, it closes automatically. The preview images when you have many windows open from a program close themselves before I can select any. And littme annoying stuff. And sometimes, it's like all the screen is blinking, in Firefox. Other odd behavior : the cursor unfocus from pages while it blinks, if you want to go down on a page, well you have to click again the page to be able to control. Sometimes it's all the time, you can't even scroll to a document or a web page...

I think last time I solved this problem by getting to an older version of windows, it was months ago. Now it didn't work. I tried also to modify all the usb options (disable, etc) it didn't work.

Sometimes it's more apparent than others which is very strange.

I'm running windows 7 x64. Does anyone knows what it could be ?

Hello folks,

This is my first post.  I've been a long fan of BleepingComputer.com but I have never needed to ever post something because the wealth of information here was able to help me resolve most problems.  That is, until now.  I have been fixing computers for years and I don't remember to have ever been in a position where I have exhausted all options and have surrendered to the reality that it may be the motherboard.  But, despite my experience, I know I'm a novice at this game so that's why I'm turning to the people here.

I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre M58 7244 Desktop.  This is not mine, but a friends.  The problem is as follows: When the computer boots up, there is a splash screen which says the "system is starting" and to interrupt the startup, I can hit enter.  If I hit enter, screen disappears and I'm brought to a black screen with the cursor blinking on the top left corner.  Clearly the issue is startup related so all I'm thinking about is trying to fix the MBR or even considering flashing the BIOS.  So, I attempt to get into the BIOS.  Since hitting enter brought me nowhere, I decided to use other common hot keys.  Hitting F1, F2, Delete, F8, F12 from the splash screen take me nowhere except to the blinking cursor.  I hit ESC and viola! Another screen that displays lots of text as well as memory information, which is all accurate.

This screen also gives me two additional o... Read more

Hello, and Welcome,
Have you replaced the CMOS battery with a new one? PXE errors can be due to a bad hard drive or bad CMOS battery. I would also powercycle the computer if you have not tried it yet. Pull the power cord. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds, Replace the power cord and boot.

Depending on how many RAM modules you have, start with one and try to boot. Change slots. If that does not help, replace with the other module if there is more than one and try both slots booting between each changed location.

I would also reseat any hard drive cables at the hard drive and motherboard. When booting, can you hear the hard drive spin up when the side panel is removed? Good Luck

Please help. I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1420, Vista Basic. Two days ago, I downloaded a song from limewire. When I tried to play it, my mediaplayer automatically popped out and I guess it asked for something to be updated. I cant remember the file extension. Not sure if it is wmp. My screen froze for 20 seconds but I managed to stop it by clicking on the X button numerous times. I left the laptop on overnight until it became empty. I just turned it on only after work. The computer resumed and I saw that something has been updated. I closed it out immediately. After about 5-10 minutes of surfing the net, I noticed that my Avira Free anti-virus has detected a malware. When I clicked on the "remove" button, it automatically scanned for a virus. I have noticed that while scanning, the page freezes and becomes slower not until the scan has been fully completed. After 2-3 minutes, Avira notified me again of a malware--same file. My mistake is that I failed to copy the said malware. Avira kept on saying that I have to remove the file because it is malicious. I clicked on remove again and my anti-virus tried to scan the file again. It happened more than 3-4 times and I kept on doing the same thing. The screen problem started from there. The actual screen resolution fades slowly and gets back to normal resolution slowly as well. It continuously happened for 5 minutes. And then the screen suddenly begun to blink up and down like when we blink our eyes (that's the best way ... Read more

I'm having problems with my external drive and am wondering if the blinking light is a code for what's wrong. The lights did not blink the same way before. I believe something is damaged but I don't know exactly whats wrong with it.
I have an external "SimpleTech" drive on the back it says the following:
Product Name: SimpleDrive
Model No.: 96300-40001-001
Power: DC Adapter 12V 2A
It connects via a USB cable to my computer. My computer was recognizing it but no longer does. I tried replacing the USB cable but that didn't help either. It has a red and a blue light on it in the front. The red light indicates it has been turned on but I don't know what exactly the blue light indicates. However the blue light is now blinking in a way that I have not seen it blink before. It blinks on once then pauses then blinks three times fast then pauses and repeats the pattern. Does this blinking pattern indicate what the problem is? When the HD turns on it spins up sounding fine but then makes several soft ticking/clicking type sounds and spins down and stops then just blinks it's blue light. Someone told me it's probably a head crash and the clicking sound is the scraping of the head against my platters meaning probably everything is shot. Any help? Is the blue light blinking a code that says what's going on? Is it even worth taking in to someone to see if they can salvage any of the data that was on it?

My Rock Mobile External hard drive was doing the same thing. It just went completely Blank, and is no longer even formated. Save your data if you can.

Ok, I will try to explain this as best as I can. I play this game called Maple Story and on my old computer I had no problems on it but I switched to another computer which is faster and has much more RAM and I thought that the game would run even faster. However, I started to notice quick and increasingly more frequent blue flashes on the screen when I was playing the game, and a short while after that the game would freeze and I would have to restart the computer. I thought it was a problem with my display driver so I updated that and it totally fixed the problem of the blue flashes and freezing. HOWEVER, NOW I get this constant lag while playing the game that was not there before and this happened right after I updated the display driver. It is a continuous lag and I really would like to know how I can fix it. Please help!!

A:Constant Lag Problem

Try minimizing the game opening task manager and see what else is running that is slowing you down.Open task manager by ctrl+alt+delete.End the task of any non essential program by highlighting and hitting end task.

with TES:Oblivion; IE7(i already got help for that); NFS:Carbon; Lavasoft: Ad-Aware(Ad-Watch);expolere.exe;...well I think that's all.
Program shuts down no matter what i press CANCEL or OK.
What do I need to do? I have 2GB RAM so that should not be the problem. What could couse this?

BHP Welcome to TSF. The attached error that you receive, is this the only one or are you receiving others? Just because you have 2GB of ram doesn't rule out that one stick could be bad. What are your computer specs (e.g. mobo, ram, hdd, cpu, vid card, etc.)? What tasks are you doing when this error appears? Please give us as much info as possible.

If this is the wrong board to post this in, my apologies.

So, about two or three months ago my laptop's motherboard died. It was an old asus machine, and was years out of warranty, so I decided to simply recycle it and buy another desktop... I've always liked them better anyways. I bought a Dell Inspiron from Office Depot, seemed like a pretty nice deal on the machine that I got. In any case, it ran smooth, and the built in graphics on its i5 processor allowed me to play quite a few of my games until I could invest in a dedicated GPU. A month ago, I bought a new Thermaltake power supply to facilitate eventually getting said GPU, and a week or two later, grabbed an Nvidia GTX 750ti for a nice price, threw it in, and drooled over how nicely it played my games. Two monitors, Skyrim at max settings on one screen, Netflix streaming House on the other.

For a couple weeks everything was groovy. I was able to play my games typically at least at 60 FPS smooth, I was able to multitask, I was even able to record plenty of my games at 60 FPS with fraps, NO PROBLEM, I was thrilled with how quickly windows 8.1 started up every time... The suddenly, about a week ago, that all changed.

For some reason, my ram usage in task manager is almost always above 75%, even with nothing but skype and the task manager running. (No call going on skype, that is, just the program open.) My hard-drive usage is fine at times, but most of the time I'm doing ANYTHING at all, including open... Read more

Go to the Performance tab in Task Manager and click on Resource Monitor.
See what image names are taking up the most in each column (you can click on the column header in order to sort that column).

Also, please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
