Q: sysprep failed at [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup].

Hi All,I am having some problems with Windows 7 sysprep. It encountered a error during sysprep when "Setup is applying system settings"Error message - Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. Preferred Solution: sysprep failed at [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup].

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all,

So I recently bought a new CPU+MB (going from AMD to Intel) to upgrade my system; everything else is staying the same. I ran sysprep.exe and it gave me an error. So I searched around and found out it was the WMP service preventing it from working. So I disabled that and then tried Sysprep again. I chose OOBE and generalize since there would be new hardware.

Once I swapped out the motherboards, I booted up and Windows started configuring, but once it got to the "starting services" screen, it came up with an error and rebooted. Rebooting never fixed anything and just kept doing it over and over again. So I browsed the web for some answers and came across a few possible solutions.

First one was to open up cmd (Shift+F10) after the error and check for the errors. I did cd C:\windows\panther
and then
tracerpt setup.etl -o logfile.csv however, no file was found.

I also tried booting into safe mode, which gave an error saying that it could not complete, but upon rebooting normally, appeared as though it would work. It then gave an error at the end saying it couldn't complete, and then the cycle started again.

I also tried a repair from the installation disk to no avail.

I ended up reinstalling my old CPU+MB and re-imaging my hard drives (I have programs installed on multiple drives). The re-imaging took a day to complete, just on the 128GB SSD. The 2TB drive finished in a few hours. I'd rather not have to go through that again if I don't have ... Read more

Here is the tutorial on running sysprep. I don't know why it didn't work. I have used it before and it ran perfect, just as the tutorial said it would. Maybe reading through the tutorial will give you some idea.

I have created a base image of Windows 7 x32 to deploy to same systems.

After a sysprep, with drivers and programs installed. I capture the image using Clonezilla and reboot.

Once reboot occurs I get "Setup is updating registry settings" followed by the error message "Windows could not configur " I have checked the disk partitions and it keeps moving the system_drv to disk letter C:, windows to D: and the recovery disk to E:

I tried renaming those and had no luck.

I have recovered the setup.etl of the image and found variations of this registry error.

<Data Name="Message">(80000005): Failed to process reg key or one of its descendants: [\REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData]</Data>

All errors have same path with variations of endings.

I think it may be a progam on the image that may becausing this but I have no idea on how to find that program.

I have also attempted to use Startup Repair from the Windows 7 Installation Media. I have run it several times an no difference.

It says it will repair the boot manager and cannot find the windows partition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can specify more details if need be.

A:Failed to reboot after sysprep (deploying windows 7 x32 image)

If all systems are the same, no need for sysprep.

Im trying to run sysprep to swap over to some new hardware(mb, cpu, ram) and whn i press enter in the cp (ran as administrator) I get a cursor box when I try to run sysprep that says it cant be run on a computer with an upgraded version of windows, and that it needs a "custom (clean)" version.

I do not understand this my original copy was installed from a oem 7 ult cd. The only thing that has changes is that I used win backup to transfer an image over to a ssd.

what do I do to to run sysprep?

A:sysprep failed

Open regedit and look for the following key:

hkey_local_machine\system\setup\upgrade

If you find it, delete it, then try to use sysprep again.

Also, your OEM version is tied to the motherboard, so it can't be moved to a new system. Get ready to have to contact Microsoft when you try to re-arm it.

Hi,
Sysprep runs fine and completes successfully but when I deploy the image, sysprep tries to run again during mini setup.

When mini setup reaches the "Registering Components" step, it pops up a dialog box named "System Preparation Tool 2.0." If I hit "OK" it brings up the normal sysprep menu for resealing (which is obviously not what I want). If I hit cancel the rest of mini setup runs and everything works fine. Does anyone know how to stop this dialog box from appearing, because even though i can simply hit cancel I am trying to make a fully automated install that requires no user input. I have tried changing sysprep.inf but nothing has worked so far my current sysprep.inf file is as follows:

Microsoft working on Cloud Shell, a 'lightweight Windows version for modern computing world'

Last week, details emerged of Microsoft's plans to develop a single, unified, 'adaptive shell' for Windows 10. Known as the 'Composable Shell', or CSHELL, the company's efforts were said to be focused on establishing a universal Windows 10 version with a standardized framework to scale and adapt the OS to any type of device, display size or user experience, including smartphones, PCs, tablets, consoles, large touchscreens, and more.

Today, Petri reported that Microsoft is working on a new shell for Windows known as 'Cloud Shell'. According to internal documentation referred to in that report, Cloud Shell is described as a "lightweight version of Windows designed for the modern computing world." It also hints at plans to introduce the Cloud Shell sometime in 2017 - but little else is known about the new shell besides that.

Cloud Shell is said to be connected, in some way, with the Windows Store and Universal Windows Platform app framework, and the report speculates that it may also be related to Microsoft's plans to bring the full version of Windows 10 to mobile devices with ARM-based processors, which it announced in December.

However, the cloud nomenclature, and the reference to this being a 'lightweight' version of Windows could hint at a 'thin client'-style approach, in which the Windows 10 s... Read more

I am trying to install a customized Windows 7 Ultimate wim image (myCust7.wim) and setup.exe doesn't like it. I get 0x80070026 and 0x8007000d errors when the sysprepped image is being installed by setup.exe. The wim image is almost 10GB in size.

I can successfully apply myCust7.wim with imagex, but when I try to boot it setup.exe says it can't install Windows on my hardware. Looking online I found a solution to that: use shift-F10 and run \windows\system32\oobe\ms00be.exe. After that the error window goes away and the dialog box to enter a user and computer name appears. I complete the setup and the resulting system works perfectly, exactly as it did when I captured the wim image.

I also discovered sysprep would error out unless I disable the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service", but it runs OK if I do.

I have used myCust7.wim along with Steadier State (SS) and that works very well, but wioski is faster since it doesn't require WinPE, so I am trying to use wioski instead of SS but I keep running into "Windows Shit"! (errors, problems & aggravation)

I also found this version of SS in a blog by Panos Macheras, which seems to be almost identical to Minasi's, but it I couldn't get it to work and I moved on.

I haven't fully absorbed all that the unattend.xml file provided with wioski does, it's pretty long and detailed and includes sections for the specialize phase as well as oobe, servicing and Windows PE phases. It is provided as the las... Read more

I bought 5 Lenovo M900s with W10 Pro pre-installed. I configured machine A completely and then successfully ran Sysprep, OOBE - (Generalize) > Shutdown. I took the source SSD from machine A and a target SSD from machine B and put them in a duplicator and successfully ran that process. I pulled the target SSD from the duplicator and inserted back into the machine from whence it came, fired it up and it it whirred to life... "Getting resources ready" passed. "Region/Language" passed. At the "Customize settings" screen I have used both the "Express settings" and customized the options available. When I click next it goes to a black screen, thinks for 5 seconds, and then reboots back to the region selection screen. I have successfully used this method previously with 5 Lenovo M900s configured the exact same way.

A:Successful Sysprep and SSD duplication; boot loop during setup.

Does the ooriginal, the source SSD go into restart loop, too? Sysprepping Windows 10, OOBE restarting a few times and always coming back to languages and formats dialog is not unusual. I've occasionally had three restarts before finally getting to user creation and further.

We could check the answer file, and if the source SSD goes through OOBE normally also the setupact.log file from C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Panther folder. Please zip them and attach in a post, of course replacing all possible personal information in answer file with Xs or whatever.

When system enters mini setup everything seems to be going fine until the system get to computer name and administrators password. I have created to answer file to set the administrator password and to auto login 1 time. Computer name is auto generated ?*?. The system reports error message that it is unable to change administrator?s password. I have null this account before running sysprep and tested that login, which I can access by leaving password field blank. However system still hang at this point in the mini setup with above error message. I can type password in and system will continue with out any further problems. If anyone has any ideas I would like to here from you!

A:Sysprep 2.0 Unable to create Administrator Password During Mini Setup.

a couple thoughts:
-what is the exact error message?
-could be that the version of sysprep needs to match the version used to install the original image
-try surrounding the password in quotes in the answer file.

Hi,
hi Have created a application which i have configured as custom Shell in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell
i have done in in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
because it is needed to to run for all user,

when user login with administrator then application starts explorer.exe. but explorer.exe just opens windows explorer instead running desktop.
is anyone have any idea how to resolve this? :(
please someone provide some information.
thanks in advance,
Manish.

A:how to start windows shell (explorer.exe) when custom shell is configured

It is NOT possible to set explorer as shell without designating it as shell in the registry key.
Keeping explorer as shell in the registry, but killing explorer.exe and launching your shell work as an option for you?
I dont see any other clean way around.

hey, and thanks for helping, you guy kick.

my problem is vast. i have tried just about everything. i have heaps of adware (i have already deleted manually more than 100 hijacks/trojans/files). panda activescan doesn't work and the trial version has just caused more trouble and is now partially installed and unable to be un-installed. i had antivir which did nothing. and spyware or virus scan i do will not complete. ad-aware gets stuck (after much hard work) at:

C:\windows\setup\shell\22\my music

and housecall also gets stuck here. i've had trouble before but this is serious. i've heard of killbox and have used once before, but don't want to risk using it again without expert advice.

please help

A:Nothing deletes setup\shell\22\my music

i guess i should have stated that even if i open the shell\22\my music, folder in safe mode it brings up the dialog "explorer.exe has generated errors and need to be closed by windows" and of course pressing cancel just means it will get closed.

the only scan that can complete is 'scanspyware', but i didn't buy it so had to remove all the entries manually and this didn't solve the problem.

do you need me to post or attach a hijackthis log?

I had just replaced my hard drive from my sony vpccw29gx. It was corrupt. I bought a different brand hard druve, but same rpm.

I ordered the recovery disks from sony. I installed the disks, but after the windows 7 installed, it restarted, then when it booted, it sais "starting services", then said windows could not install on my hardware.

I calldd sony back, and they sent me ANOTHER set that were supposedly the right ones. I went through the process and yet again, the error came up.

Reinstalling Windows XP and problems accessing Laptop HDD to backup files

I have been using the command below to install XP onto another HDD for my Targa as a upgrade/replacement. I have been using the Targa laptop long with the new HDD plugged inside an enclosure to do the installation as I know that it couldn't be done on different computers due to different hardware and drivers.

E:\I386\winnt32.exe /syspart:D: /tempdrive:D: /makelocalsource /noreboot

where E is my external DVD drive (main CD drive not working) and D is the new HDD plugged in the enclosure

I think it was on the "preparing installation stage" and it said it will take 60mins. After copying all installations files to the enclosure, I think the /makelocalsource commands makes it do that. After it finishes copying the files the install window just closes and I was left with all the files it copied to the HDD on the enclosure. I pretty sure the window shouldn't do that and just to make sure I took out the 160GB HDD from the enclosure and replaced it witht the current HDD into the HDD bay of the targa and as I expected it didn't work.

The 160GB was formatted in NTFS beforehand (Quick format)so I didn't tell setup to format it again too but I wasn't too sure of the file allocation size so left as default. I just tried making another partition on the replacement HDD too with 800MB as FAT32 but after entering the comma... Read more

Houston, I have a problem. It started yesterday when attempting to log on to a user account, McAffee states that it detected a virus and recommends a scan. I click 'ok' once or twice and the following message appears: application failed to initialize (0xc0000005).

After reading through some of your posted solutions, I had to C-A-D to get task manager up so I could run Microsoft Anti-Spyware. It detected one and I removed it. I then started a McAffee scan and it found another one (maybe more, but I fell asleep waiting for it to finish). When I logged back in, McAffee was saying the same thing, I C-A-D and a c:\ window appears saying c:\WINDOWS\temp\setup.exe

It has been like this for 45+ minutes. I can attempt to shut it down, and it asks if you're sure (which I am not) so I cancelled out to let it run. The cursor inside the c:\ box appears to be moving around every 30 to 90 seconds. . . leading me to believe that it is doing something.

When I fire McAffee backup, I cannot find the one file it found before I fell asleep (not in quarentine anyway).

Any recommendations?

Our organization has recently received a number of Tablet devices (over 100) which we require a standardized image to be deployed to them all, the obvious thing to this was to create a standard image using sysprep however when i run sysprep I get the message
'Sysprep was not able to validate your windows installation' and to check the logs when i check the logs i find a message saying 'sysprep will not run on an upgrade OS' I have recently updated to windows 8.1.
I have found an article relating to windows 7 which suggested deleting the 'upgrade' key from the registry however this solution has not worked for windows 8.1
Can someone help? I do not have the time nor patience to have to start the image from scratch.
Thanks

No idea why, but I had the same problem last night... So I reburned and expect to get the same problem with the new DVD-R. Wierd... Very weird... I can open the contents of the DVD in windows explorer once I've logged into WinXP and I can see all the files and folders but for some reason after I input my reg key it tells me that the image file is not being opened... No reason why.

Anyone know what we're doing wrong? Maybe using the wrong software to burn our copies? Or the right software but the wrong settings?

Please advise.

I think you could be right.

One way to determine whether or not the CD drive is at fault is to try burning a Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, on to a disc and install it.

If it fails to install via the CD, try installing it again from a USB pen.
Instructions on how to put Linux on to a USB pen can be found here:
Universal USB Installer ? Easy as 1 2 3 | USB Pen Drive Linux

If it successfully installs from the USB pen then your CD drive is faulty and you will need to replace it if you want to install Windows XP.
If not then your CD drive is probably fine and something else is at fault.

Note: Apparently there is a way to get Windows XP to install from a USB pen but I haven't tried this myself and most online guides look pretty complicated. Unless your up to the challenge I would stick to testing Linux from USB which is a lot simpler.

A friend of mine brought me her laptop because it would not boot into Windows.

I tried resetting the bios to default and changed it to boot from the disk.

When trying to run Windows repair from the disk it just hangs on the blue splash screen.
When trying to run Windows install it gets stuck on "Setup is starting".

I have waited for about 30 minutes or more in both cases just in case it was just taking a really long time but the laptop showed no

activity. I have tried several times and gotten the same results.

I ran Puppy Linux from a live CD and was able to access the hard drive to back up the user folder so the hard drive is readable. I ran

ntfsfix and it was processed successfully but it didn't actually fix anything.

So I booted from the Windows disk again and used shift-F10 to get the command prompt, then ran diskpart, but I never got the command prompt. It just shows

X:\Sources>diskpart

Microsoft Diskpart version 6.1.7601
Copyright <C> 1999-2008 Microsoft Corporation.
On computer: MINWINPC

But the DISKPART> prompt never shows up, just a blinking cursor.

I tried chkdsk C: and get "The type of the file system is NTFS." and nothing but a blinking cursor below it.

Anyway any info or ideas of where I can go from here would be appreciated.

Greetings,

I'm a repair technician, and I'm working on a Toshiba L75D-A7283. Upon checkin, symptoms were booting up to a black screen to log in, then a black screen with cursor after that. Fixed that with a system restore point and a virus removal. My coworker upgraded the machine to 8.1 over the weekend without a Microsoft Account. When it failed, he put the machine into audit mode, I'm guessing so that we could have updates finished and have the system set up with a Microsoft Account when the customer came back in.

However, we can't get it out of audit mode. We've tried several things, including this:Sysprep Error with windows 8.1 At the setupact log, the error that presents is:
spopk.dll: Sysprep will not run on an upgraded OS. You can only run Sysprep on a custom (clean) install version of Windows.

At that point the sysprep fails, and I'm stuck in audit mode after a restart. I don't know how to get this machine back to vanilla Windows 8 without a full reinstall. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Red

A:Upgraded to 8.1 w/o Microsoft Account, stuck in sysprep

I have no ideas past performing a full reinstall, I'm guessing from recovery partition or disc.

Hi,

It was suggested by Net_Surfer I come to this forum for help before my computer's malware problem can be solved...please help!

I am trying to install apps such as MBAM (malware bytes) and my system would not allow me to do so due to "Internal Error: Failed to Expand Shell Folder Constant "userappdata". I went to the folder location and unhid this folder and went as far as changing the "useappdata" folder property and un-clicked the "Read-Only" box (which is not a checked box but rather a blue filled-in box) and it went through the motions of going through all the files within the folder to change the "read-only" attribute. Unfortunately when it was done, the folder is still "Read-Only".

I am the Administrator of the machine under User Account attributes and I have full permission (in the security tab of the folder) to this "userappdata" folder but I cannot make the folder not "Read-only" as the system would not allow me to make this change. I am not sure why this is as I've never had this problem until I left the machine idle for about a month and when I started using it again, this problem popped up.

Also, the registry is Hkey_Current_User_...\User Shell Folder\

Found a solution by comparing the registry on a computer I'm fixing to my own Vista machine.

I think the spyware responsible for this makes a simple change to keep you from installing anything new... go to the UserShellFolders folder in your registry, the one where you were told to delete the Recent folder. Look at the APPDATA folder and notice that it has the path $APPDATA$. On my good comp, the path was %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming

I changed the path on the bad comp to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming and rebooted into safe mode. I was able to install MBAM without a hitch and am currently running a scan the machine.

Hope this helps... good luck!

Hi, how did you receive the download notice? I have pwsh.exe V6 on my machine and I do use it. I can see no reason why you would not update, although support for existing versions will last a long time, there are some technical and practical improvements in this version, however if you don't use it they are somewhat mute.

It has not replaced cmd.exe as this is still available on windows ten, it is under system32 and you can create a shortcut to it on your desktop, if you like. As with earlier versions of powershell typing cmd (press enter) into powershell opens a cmd window within powershell.

Hello, I just had this pesky error and spent three hours researching and trying to fix it. I wanted to have this searchable in case others have come across the same problem. This problem occurs when you try to install certain programs. I tried all of these fixes, but I'll label the one that worked for me. (I will only show the fixes I tried which have been confirmed to work for others). My operating system is a Windows 7 64 bit. Enjoy

1. Create a new administrator account, log on to that account, then run the installer from that account. (this is what worked for me. )

(Simply running the installer as an administrator account from my normal account did not work)

2. Go to the command prompt (by clicking the windows logo/start and typing cmd ),
then type regedit inside the command prompt and press enter. Browse to the location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Microsoft --> Windows -->Current Version --> Explorer --> User Shell Folders. Click to highlight the Recent key, then click File, export. Save the file (but remember where you saved it to). Go back to the registry editer, right click Recent and click delete. Restart your computer and try the installation again. (please take care when you're in the registry editer, deleting the wrong thing could lead to: )

Good day and thank you for reviewing this post.

I have entered the exact error in the subject line. Windows Vista HP 32 bit.

I have researched this error through Google and found LOTS of 'good' answers .... just none that have worked for me. I haveedited the registry, I have searched for and removed an Adobe folder after doing a %appdata$% search .... but I cannot seem to get ANYTHING installed on this machine w/o getting this error.

I am willing to bet I am dealing with some virus issues or residues, but I cannot install any software to help determine this. I have run AVZ4 and let it do its thing, and I have run Vipre and MWB scans on the hard drive when plugged externally into a sata to usb adapter and run from another computer.

I welcome any possible answers to this and will try each as they come to this forum and report back.

Thank you very much.

Over the last couple of weeks, Microsoft began advertising Windows 10 to existing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. Those who are regularly up to date via Windows Update should now have the option to reserve a copy of Windows 10 via the system tray, which will put you in for pre-downloading Windows 10 before July 29th. Earlier this week, Microsoft released another update for Windows 8.1 users, which puts reserving Windows 10 at the forefront of Windows, literally during the Windows 8.1 setup process and even before reaching the desktop.

This new update allows users to reserve Windows 10 within the OOBE (out of box experience) when first booting a new install or setting up a newly purchased PC. The ability to reserve comes after you setup your account, but before you even reach the desktop. This means that new users who recently purchased a Windows 8.1 device simply can't miss the chance to reserve Windows 10. This also appears if you clean install Windows 8.1 with November Update roll-up and are connected to the internet.

into the windows inf folder and it looks to be working beautifully for some of the laptops but others crash and won't go further and goes into a constant reboot cycle of an error happened and needs to reboot. Is there a way to run a script prior to sysprep
installing devices?
I already have a script that identifies the laptop and segregated the drivers for the type of laptops that are issued so just wanted to know if I can put it in somewhere to run and remove it so sysprep can gather the proper inf of the model rather then installing
the incorrect ones.

On the 4th attempt to sysprep a Windows 7 Enterprise system, I get the dreaded, 'A fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine.'
The setuperr.log shows:
2010-08-04 13:57:58, Error      [0x0f0073] SYSPRP RunExternalDlls:Not running DLLs; either the machine is in an invalid state or we couldn't update the recorded state, dwRet = 31
2010-08-04 13:57:58, Error      [0x0f00ae] SYSPRP WinMain:Hit failure while processing sysprep cleanup external providers; hr = 0x8007001f

I've seen articles referring to the Windows Software Licensing Rearm program may have issues running more than three times in a single Windows image and to add <SkipRearm>1</SkipRearm> in the /unattend file...  but this did not help.
The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service has also been disabled which is often referred to in other posts.
The KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947212/en-us indicated that the resolution is to re-create the image for the machine... This is very frustrating. I'm hoping that there is
a better resolution???
How do you sysprep a machine more than three times to avoid this error?
Thanks!!

A:Sysprep - Fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine

Hi,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.

This error shows that sysprep was run multiple times on the machine, please open a command prompt, type:
slmgr /dlv to view how many times of remaining Windows Activation count. Generally speaking, to sysprep the image on a single computer for multiple times, you need to configure the
Microsoft-Windows-Security-SPP |
SkipRearm to 1 in the unattend.xml file. I am assuming whether you configure the
Microsoft-Windows-Security-Licensing-SLC |
SkipRearm to 1 instead of SPP, the SLC setting is deprecated and should not be used.
As a work around of this problem, please type: regedit in the Start Search box to open Registry Editor, set the value of
GeneralizationState under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus to
7, then run sysprep again.
If the same issue still persists, please unistall the MSDTC and Reinstall it, then try the sysprep.
To uninstall MSDTC :- msdtc -uninstall
To reinstall
MSDTC :- msdtc –install
