Opening up storage space on my C: drive for well....storage.

Q: Opening up storage space on my C: drive for well....storage.

I have an Acer Aspire One CloudBook 14 with absolutely no storage space at all...not even for critical updates. It came with 28GB of which most of it was used for a reinstallation of the OS because of infection. There's a Windows.old file that for some reason I cannot delete no matter what...tried adding an external (flash) storage to no avail...At my wits end...there has to be a way to retrieve some if not all my storage back...

I created a Storage pool with the following setup. Three 3TB drives with parity all in an external enclosure with eSata and USB 2/3 ports. It was connected via USB when created and had production data loaded and tested without any issues.
After a few days of use I decided to see what happened when I tried to access it via the eSata port. No luck, due to a driver on the eSata card issue with Win 8. So I powered all back down and plugged back in via USB. At this point the Storage pool went
into the state as per the screenshot below. Any suggestions to either fix the issue and/or retrieve the data that is in the volume?

I'm creating a new Storage Space with two internal drives, a Toshiba 2TB and a Toshiba 3TB. The 2TB drive was successfully added to the storage space. However, adding the 3TB drive results in the following error:

"Can't add drives. Check the drive connectionis and then try again. Incorrect function. (0x00000001)"

Does Storage Space have a known issue with 3TB drives? I ask because I've run into this problem with Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008. I thought Microsoft would have rectified this issue with their latest OS release...

Any help / advice will be appreciated.

A:Can't add drive to Storage Space

I've seen similar reports, but the issues were caused by the disk controller. The drives had the same Unique ID, and that's what had Storage Spaces confused.

Check it in PowerShell and post results:

Hello everyone, I'm obviously brand new to the forums so I hope this is the right place for this. I should start with my type of drive; I have a 120gb Cherryville SSD from Intel serving as my C: Drive. Just the other night I had approximately 43GB left in my C: Drive (note this is incredibly low as well, but I was content). Last night I checked again and saw that I was down to 25! I performed a disk defrag and that actually decreased my storage to 23! I am absolutely puzzled as to the cause of this.

The only thing I have done between the time that I had over 40 and last night was update my visual BIOS (having nothing to do with my C: Drive at all) and download a simple XML update for Microsoft Expressions (which was measured in kilobytes). Granted I have done my fair share of updating .net framework and various other updates, but all of my major programs are on my hard drive, not my SSD.

To put this into visual perspective, I'd like to share a photo showing around 25GB of space taken that is absolutely nowhere to be found, I find it hard to believe that Windows and a few programs can take up nearly 90GB of storage. Any advice/ideas?

An answer to this question may clear up my confusion: Can the C: drive be part of a pool, having all drives (including the c: drive) look like 1 drive? If so, how do I do that? I created a storage space, but it made me set it up as drive D:, and I see no way to combine it with C:.

Next: I want to have the C:/boot drive be part of the redundancy equation. I plan to use Parity. I can see where it would be if all drives looked like 1, but I don't see how it would be if not part of the pool.

Any fog removal is appreciated.

Thanks.....

I've searched but not found an direct answer. Pls excuse if I have missed something.

I'm running a Storage Spaces on a Win 8.1 machine with a few partitions. I just discovered that my large partition couldn't be enlarged over 16TB due to my 4kb cluster size so I created a new, smaller, partition on the drive capacity that I had left with
64kb cluster size. Fine so far. I then started moving files to the new partition thinking that I could somehow reclaim the unused space from the old, large, partition and then "transfer" it to my new, smaller partition. But now I'm stuck as I can't
find a way to reclaim this unused space. Help!
I've tried running the "Defragment and Optimize Drives" tool but no change.
What am I doing wrong?

Hello, I'm having novice troubles again.

I have added an extra hard drive to my PC which was an extra disk in my old PC. I have connected it up identically as it was before. That is connected to the first connecter on the ribbon which goes to my CDROM drive. After restarting my PC the added disc worked fine but I could no longer see my CDROM drive. Removing the added disc everything went back to normal my CDROM was visible again. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to have my extra drive and my CDROM working?

Any advice is welcome.

A:{RESOLVED}Trying to add an extra hard drive for storage space

check the jumpers on the cdrom, you can't jumper both devices master or slave, one has to be jumpered master and the other jumpered slave, makes no difference really which, just so that they are different.

Hi really sorry if this is the wrong place but need help.

I was adding a new drive to my PC's storage spaces only due to it being from and old laptop it had the reserved OEM partition so windows refused to add it, I went and used a partition software to delete all partitions on the drive so I could add it only as it was the same size and make as one of the other drives already in my storage space i stupidly chose the wrong one.

As you would expect the Storage space Pool failed and the dis was marked as disconnected only its not its there but had it table deleted. I have been googleing all night and have yet to find a way to repair this yet I know its there cos using the software from ReclaiMe Storage Spaces Recovery Software it detects the pool and can see all the stuff on it bit dosn't have and option to repair just recover I don't want to do this as it the the lack of space that caursed this

I have gone through the powershell route and have managed to change the drive from "Retired" to "Auto-Select" but am still not able to get the pool to repair of work.

someone said use testdisk but this finds the partition but its listed as "unknown" to I cant retrive this what am I missing?!?!?!
Thanks so much for any help on this

Hi,

I set the maximum shadow copy storage space to 8 GB in my Vista and thought I should never worry about the space in my system disk. However, I have just found the Used Shadow Copy Storage space is bigger than the Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space at the moment:

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 10.326 GB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 10.573 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 8 GB

Do you know why and how to limite the Used Shadow Copy Starage space?
Thank you for any suggestions!

A:Used Shadow Copy Storage space is bigger than the Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space !

It would be helpful if you filled in the System Specs. That way if you post on another issue people answering don't have to ask the same questions about your hardware over again, or search for the post with the info. Just push the specs link in every one of your posts.

I'm not sure how they measure the space usage. But 8 GB sounds like only a couple of restore points. How big is the HD? I suspect when deciding to discard an old restore point it looks at the current usage. If under the limit, it keeps all the old and makes another. That's just a guess on my part. But you can try a few different max numbers and see how it acts for yourself. As Yogi Berra said, "you can observe a lot by watchin'".

I am considering adding storage space to my Dell Optiplex 755. I don't know much about this except I assume it involves either plugging something into the motherboard or using a desktop unit that plugs in through a USB port. I am going to be doing some video editing and I need space for all my footage. This is a separate concern from data backup, for which I plan to acquire two external hard drives (which I asked about in another thread).

What is the best way to go about this? I am already worried about external hard drives' rate of failure. Is it any better for internal hard drives/internal SSDs/desktop additions? Obviously this includes the added consideration that I will be working off the unit every day for about 8 hours, so it has to be hearty enough to deal with that.

Thank you for any advice!

Prior to doing this my Laptop seemed to always lack storage space! It has storage of about 30GB which I know isn't a lot, but it seems that 26GBs has already been taken up by god knows what!
And every time I turn on the computer and use it (general browsing) the memory storage gets lower and stops apps from running!
Can anyone give a look in to why? I've used programs to locate large files but it seems I need the files that aren't huge!

I have Windows 10 Pro I just installed on a Dell XPS with 12GB of Ram. I have 3 drives: My OS is on a Samsung SSD. My data is on a 3TB HDD partitioned into D: (Data) and E: (Video). I also have another identical 3TB drive. I used the latter drive as a mirror on Win 7 for my D: and E: drives. I removed the mirror prior to moving to Windows 10. Now all my data is in D: and E: on the ?Dynamic? Disk 2.
When I tried to create the Storage Space, the dialog only displayed the Disk 1. So, I created the Storage Space and it now called it Disk 9 in Disk Management. Then, I deleted the Storage Space.
2 questions:
1) Now, I cannot see the drive at all in Disk Management, though it shows up in Device Manager "This device is working properly."
2) Why was I unable to see my other data drive (Disk 2) in Storage Spaces?

2) What Hard disc would you suggest for main installation.

Any help you can give would be appreciated

Welcome to EightForums alexanderd

For storage 4TB is more than enough, but I do not have assurance to give you to the point that it is Windows 8 ready.

I'm currently running on a dual boot.

About the system requirements you can visit this link http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...-download.html

For the hard drive I suggest D: just leave Win 7 on your C: so that if you got in trouble from Win 8 you still have the Win 7.

And when you install make sure to have a Clean Install - Windows 8

Hi, Your machine has 2 physical drives      http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=1AN98EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB 1. Disk 1 is SSD which is C: to store Windows and programs/apps. Please avoid to store your data/files on it, it is small and can be filled up very fast . Some apps allow you to install on other drive. 2. Disk 2 has 2 partitions     D: You can use it to store your data (musics, videos ...) on it. You can also store some apps which allow you to install outside C:    E: Recovery partition: please do not touch it, you may need it one day to rebuild your machine. Vendors (including HP) won't supply DVD's for OS and drivers, they use Recovery partition. Hope this helps. Regards

I know the answer is most likely NO without paying for it, but as were a bunch of students its not really an option right now

thanks anyway

Hi - I have a low spec notebook with Windows 10 preinstalled. Low spec is fine for my purposes but my 32 GB SSD is almost full and this seems to be stopping Windows from updating. Actually I have 7 GB of free space, which I assumed would be sufficient for the update but apparently not. But there is another related issue. When I check storage space under settings, there is 5.09 GB referred to as "other".

When I open this category, it reveals 7 folders and sizes:

These sizes hardly add to 5.09 GB so I investigated further...

When I open these folders and check properties, most of the sizes above are correct. The exception is C:\eSupport. Within this folder, there are two subfolders - 'eDriver' 1.51 GB and 'Manual' 217 MB. So this explains a portion of the 5.09 GB - perhaps - but where is the rest?

Can anyone tell me how to regain some or all of the 'phantom' 5.09 GB under the category of 'other'?

Open windows explorer (should be that little folder icon on the taskbar if you haven't gotten rid of it). Once opened select "This PC" from the left hand side. It should give you what you're looking for. Now I just need to figure out how to have it bring me here by default....

A:Windows 8 storage space ssd and hdd

You can create a storage pool with a single drive...you just won't be able to use any of the resiliency functionality, but can expand it later.

My laptop does not have enough storage space to download any thing.  I purchased an external hard drive to download statistics software for school and that downloaded successfully onto the My Passport (external hard drive).  However, I need to run the program by using the installation wizard and the computer will not allow me to install it on the external drive, it keeps prompting me that my C drive does not have enough disk space.  I kno this which is why I have installed the my passport drive and it will not let me change the destination of where I want the file to go.

A:Storage space issue

@thomas_07 You're not going to be able to completely install any apps onto an external drive. That's because the installation involves creating lots of different files, including making changes to the Registry, and those all reside on your "C" drive. What you CAN so is use app settings to ensure that large DATA files get written to and stored on an external drive, but that depends on each app and what it allows.

Hi forum,
I am very careful about keeping an eye on System Restore points but I think I may have made an incorrect move.

I recently made a "vssadmin" alteration to storage space on my main drive (C) to 3GB. I now appear to have a lost a restore point which backdated to 3 weeks ago when the PC was running perfectly. This only occured after the change. I know this point is now lost forever.
However to avoid this happening in future at what figure should this be set in future.? Some recommend 30% of free space on the drive which, in my case, would be around 50GB. All the other recommendations say 3GB. Very puzzled by all this and would appreciate assistance. I like to keep points dating back a while as a precaution.

A:Shadow Storage Space

Welcome
You are very wise system restore is the best feature of Vista. I always keep as many as possible.
System Restore: frequently asked questions
System Restore - disk space

As long as you meet the minimum required space you can make the space used as large as your needs require.

See post by our leader and very respected member regarding the OS

Again meet these requirements then you can make as large as you want to be comfortable

Reading your post indicates that you are like me, very conservative with your computer. Why not download the free Macrium Reflect and make a copy of your hard drive, then update once a month

Are you able to use two SATA HDDs without using RAID? I mean. Example If I have a 40GB HDD that I want to use as the Boot disk and a 160 BG that I want to use as just storage for programs games and Download things, would I just plug them into the SATA Ports and attach the power cables.... Or would I need some sort of card or something?

A:Combining Storage space.

disable raid
I don't think sata's have master /slave jumpers
you may have to go in on boot and config there
when my server boots up I get a prompt to config my scsi's
I don't use sata drives so

I noticed recently I've been losing gigabytes of storage. I did a scan with jdiskReport and this was the result.

According to that I'm missing more than 100 gb of space.

What could be causing this issue?

A:Missing storage space

Are you speaking of the Used Space?

Try running a Disk Cleanup and delete any temp files.

Afternoon,

I am looking for help I am currently running win 8 with a pool of drives configured in storage space about 10TB. I want to build a new computer with Win 8 and move the current drives to the new computer without losing the data is the possible?

A:Storage Space Move??????

Hello Trinni, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes. You will be able to connect the added drives of a storage space to another Windows 8 computer or new installation of Windows 8 to have that Windows 8 see and use the storage space in it's storage pool as well.

My hard drive has a capacity of 465 GB. I've run WinDirStat and it says that there are only 228 GB worth of files on my hard drive. Windows, however, states that I only have 62 GB free. This leaves about 175 GB unaccounted for.

I tried defragmenting my disk, but it didn't help. I also ran disk clean up and deleted all the restore points/shadow storage, but that also didn't make a difference. I ran the command line "vssadmin list shadowstorage" to double check, and it says that shadow storage is only taking up about 3 GB.

Here are some pics of storage management in "my computer", WinDirStat results, and a window showing disk usage for restore points.

I'm at a lost as to where the space is being taken up. Any help will be appreciated.

EDIT: WinDirStat is showing 172 GB of unknown space. What can this be? I'm running a full disk check now, as another thread with a similar problem found this to be the solution.

Heres a pic: View image: Untitled

EDIT 2: The disk check did nothing...

A:175 GB of unaccounted storage space

Do you use Avast anti-virus?

Do you use System Restore?

Try using another app such as TreeSize Free edition to see what it says about what is occupying space.
