file distribution from server - help!

Q: file distribution from server - help!

I have a business. I need some software to make my business simpler. But I don't know of such software. This is what my business does:

1. receive files from several customers at my central server
2. distribute those files from server to employees daily (with administrator control over who gets what)
3. employees return processed files to server
4. server sends processed files to the respective customers

how can I automate this process? What software is out there for this problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

More as an alternative to twiddling my thumbs than anything else, I tried to produce a batch file that would count up the number and size of files in a folder, as well as the number and size of files with each extension. Hence it would say how many word documents I have and how much space they're taking up, etc.

I've managed to get a vaguely working model, but the output formatting is terrible (I just wanted it to say X bytes in Y "Z" Files, none of that ugly dotted variable names) and I have failed to get it to equate .htm and .html, .jpg and .jpeg, etc.
Code:
@ECHO OFF
REM THIS BATCH FILE ITTERATES THROUGH ALL THE SUBFOLDERS AND FILES IN A FOLDER (IDEALLY A DRIVE)
REM IT TOTALS THE NUMBER OF FILES CONTAINED IN THAT FOLDER, AND THE SIZE OF THOSE FILES.
REM IT ALSO TOTALS THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF FILES WITH EACH EXTENSION IT ENCOUNTERS.
REM ALL INFORMATION IS THEN PRINTED TO THE SCREEN AND FTYPEDST.TXT

You would be better off using third party software that already does this. Plenty of them out there.
I personally would check the extension of each file using the cmd extensions of a for loop. then do an if statement for each file type you want to keep track of. then use a call statement to branch to a function that adds up the file sizes and number of files.

Can someone tell me of a way a person can distribute a file to other people other than e-mail and are not connected to a network. I appreciate any help.

A:File distribution

You could try a free filesharing programme
http://www.wfshome.com/

Or a paid for web hosting service - there's lots out there, some with trial periods
http://www.mydocsonline.com/

Instant messaging - they allow you to send a file

Via a website if you have one

If they are photos - there's free pic hosting sites
http://www.photobucket.com/

Or you could mail them a floppy

This is my first post on this site so I hope this is the correct forum for this topic. I'm finally upgrading to a new PC which of course will have Windows 8. I'm coming off of an XP machine and will need to transfer my files and folders. Simple enough, however I've read both here and MS site about the libraries and file system that W8 uses and how they're different than older versions so I'm now a bit confused as to the proper way to distribute my files when I put them on the new machine. For example, in XP I simply had a single folder for each piece of machinery (CNC machine that is) which contained all the documents (.pdf, xls, etc.), pictures, and videos directly pertaining to that individual machine. If I understand the W8 library system correctly, for best results I should now start an individual folder for each machine in each of the Windows libraries. That is, a folder in Documents for machine X, a folder in Pictures for machine X, a folder in Videos for machine X, etc. and then continue the same way for machine Y and so on. Am I correct? I have no problem doing this I'm just looking for best procedures to follow whenever possible and use the OS as designed.
Sorry for the rookie question, but most of my experience using computers, besides the typical "home" use has been with PPCL programming and process control. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Help with file distribution

You can set it up any way you want. There is no requirement to make the changes you mention. If you're comfortable with the structure you have now, stay with it. No need to even use Libraries unless you want to.

My recommendation would be to stay as you are initially, then as you get used to Windows 8, and it will take considerable getting used to, especially coming from XP, start making changes that add to the usability. Just my $.02 worth.

take any good image burning software app or virtual iso mounter and drag the file from the ISO to the desktop. apps include imgburn, daemon tools, alcohol 120, etc.

I need to hand out a file on a USB stick (or burn it onto a CD) but I do not want that file to be copied or distributed/forwarded (e.g. by attaching it to an email).

While I do not expect to find a bulletproof solution I want to make copy/distribution a bit harder (at least for a relatively unskilled PC user) than just leaving the file totally unprotected and in plain sight.

I thought to place my file inside a specifically created (Windows) system special folder "somefolder.{RESERVED-GUID}" then make a link pointing to it (relative path without drive letter to use on the CD/USB stick which might be assigned a different letter) which will keep the file easily viewable but not straightforwardly copyable.

I need some help to create this link, any suggestions?

Alternative approaches to address the same issue are most welcome.

NOTES: Originally the (sensitive) file is a .pdf*** but I made a (launcher) script that checks the existence of another (sort of validation) file in the same dir (only if that validation file is present, then a password prompt pops up to permit the .pdf's file execution). I then converted the (launcher) script to .exe file... Bottom line, the files to hide/protect are the (target) .pdf file and the (hidden and extensionless) validation file

*** I have already added all standard "pseudo-security" restrictions (prevent edit, copy, print etc.) to the .pdf file but I do not intend to rely only on that type of security since it can ... Read more

I am operating with Windows Vista Home Basic and have had trouble updating my files after a clean reinstallation. Finally succeeded through many strategies, but in doing so (a jillion times) eventually noticed that failures occurred whenever the 'System Distribution' file in the windows folder had not been emptied of logs and previous downloads. Not sure what this means. Any ideas? Could there be a problem with hard disk, processor, motherboard, electrical shorts? (Do not have problems downloading to other computers in my home, so my overall connection is good.)

Thanks.

I have installed FileZilla server 0.9.41 on Windows Server 2008 R2. When I upload files to the FTP site, the time
of the file uploaded is incorrect. For example if I upload a file modified 10:37:10 PM it becomes 5:37:00 PM on the FTP site. It is always 5 hours earlier, and truncates the seconds. This makes version control of files difficult. Is there some configuration
change that can fix this, or is this a Windows Server issue? The server time is configured for the Central time zone in The United States.

Okay I want to go over pros and cons of some of the things that my boss wants done.

First off let me explain what we have. Users are on a domain system. Both laptop and desktop users. No users have admin rights.

Now let me explain what we want to do. We want a backup of their My Documents (and possibly other directories in the future) but we want it to be as invisible to them as possible.

I looked into the Folder redirection GPO and has a good pro - Simple to impelment (I did a test on my own PC did it in about 5 minutes) cons - in order to allow laptops to work they would have to have offline folders enabled and synchrnized and worst of all synchrnization won't accept PST's, MDB's and other key files that we would need synchronized as well gives errors in the synching process.

I then thought about a file sync program letting them seemlessly work on their PCs and just sync the files to the file server - Pros Can install a server side client that just polls for connected PC's and copies the files to the repsective places. Cons costs money, usually does not sync in use files making some of the files be missed.

Lastly I considered a batch file to run at login - Pros easier to setup to copy things out. Cons only runs at login so people could leave their PC up for 15 days and have 15 day old software. As well I do not know how to copy only modified files so some people with large files would copy over a ton of data (unless I can find a solution for this).

Executable paths are correct (C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs), Log on as local system account, dependency is ok with computer browser there.
Have done a windows file check and no problems.

Please help ??? This is driving me nuts (well more nuts). I am a computer idiot but try hard so please have mercy.

In return happy to answer any dental questions you may have (as that's all i got to give)

I have a situation where I am constantly having to edit the super.ini file to replace text with some other text.

My problem is that I have servers that this ini.file points to and instead of editing the file every time is there a way I can select which server the ini. file points to by use of a batch file etc. I have 5 servers lit-sup, chi-sup, wor-sup, rus-sup, bog-sup. Basically, I would love a way either to enter the sup via the cmd prompt or a batch file for each sup. So for this example I would like a way to enter "chi-sup" and lit-sup would change to this, keeping in mind I also need to be able to do the same for each server.
Hope this makes sense!
I would be most grateful if someone could advise if I can do this?

The contents of super.ini is pasted below

[DataAccessSQL]
OpenConnectionsOnStartup=Y
KeepConnectionOpen=Y
; Super SQL Database
SuperServer=lit-sup
SuperName=InterimSuper
SuperUser=***********
SuperPwd=***********
;fares SQL Database

I have 5 servers, lit-sup, chi-sup, wor-sup, rus-sup, bog-sup so with my limited knowledge to find and replace the text within the file does not work as the text is always changing to one of the other servers.
Thanks,

Tiny

Hi,

There could be a way to tackle it using regular expressions but they aren't a strong point of mine so I would go about it this way.

I would have 5 ini files, 1 for each server. I would then have a batch file as below which prompts you to chose which server you want the super.ini to point to, and then copy that into place with the name super.ini.
Code:

@echo off

rem Script to change super.ini

rem Ask which server to change to

echo ******************************************************
echo Please choose which system you would like to change to
echo ******************************************************
echo -- Press 1 for lit-sup
echo -- Press 2 for chi-sup
echo -- Press 3 for wor-sup
echo -- Press 4 for rus-sup
echo -- Press 5 for bog-sup

set /p Input=Please enter an option from the above list:
if /i "%Input%"=="1" (goto lit)
if /i "%Input%"=="2" (goto chi)
if /i "%Input%"=="1" (goto wor)
if /i "%Input%"=="2" (goto rus)
if /i "%Input%"=="1" (goto bog)
goto MAINMENU

rem Copy server specific ini file and name as super.ini (suppress overwrite prompt)

Hello,

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

home\Josh

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

What I want to do is put two hard drives into it, and use it as file storage for the two clients....is there anyway to do this without installing an actual os and wasting all that hard drive space on a box that I don't even intend to have a monitor on?

Could I possibly format it NTFS and then use Microsoft Management Console to create a new partition then mount the empty NTFS folder?

I was tasked to create an answer file for an unattended install using SIM. In a virtual lab, i had the install.wim file on a server and put it on a share to push it through to the client machine. Just for the purpose of making it easy, we could apply full
control permissions in ntfs to the file to everyone and gave read write permissions to everyone in the share. By giving the path in SIM i could pull the file from the client station, but then was asked for credentials. Any idea why it is asking for credentials?
I thought that i made it available to everyone. I even made a separate folder and copied the file to the folder then changed the permissions. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hello,

I would like to create an iRC file server to share files over iRC channels. These channels have bot programs running on them. You would log into the iRC channel then your server would be broadcast over the channel and people could connect to it. You might have a ratio of 1:2 on the file server which means connected users would have to upload 2 times as much as they download. They would connect to the server my typing an iRC commend and download files by typing Get <filename>

Any idea on how to set these types of servers up? Just want to share my fully legal songs, movies, software, games with everyone

Looks like you are trying to restore over the original DB as well as the log files. I bet it would work if you wrote it to a new database and log database. You may have to detach the database and delete the LDF file to get it to restore.

If all you need to do is save and backup and it's just for you, a full blown server may be overkill.

You would be able to save a lot of money with a home server powered by WHS or even just a NAS box.

Home Server option: Newegg.com - HP MediaSmart EX490, Windows Home Server w/ Intel Celeron 2.2 Ghz 2GB DDR2 1TB HDD installed (three open bay), 4 USB & 1 eSATA expansion ports , Mac Compatible, TiVO support

NAS option: Newegg.com - Open Box: BUFFALO TS-X6.0TL/R5 6TB TeraStation III Network Storage

They're not comparable, just two options I could think of.

Here's what I've got and what I'm wanting to do...I'm looking for helpful hints or the best way to acheive what I need.

I have 3 computers...

1. My wife's desktop Windows XP Profesional PC - it's hard drive is FULL and needs to get pictures and STUFF off of it.

2. I have my work laptop - also on Windows XP Professional

3. An old Gateway Laptop that I used until the backlight on the LCD display went out. The computer works fine with an external display.

It occured to me the other day that I should make a "file server" out of it. I don't know if this is the correct terminology or not but basically hook it up to the router and use it as a network file drive and empty my wife's computer.

So, I am going to wipe out the old laptop - wondering if there is any specific recomendations on how to do this...obviously I can keep xp on there and do this but I'm looking for best way if anyone has a suggestion...I'm all ears.

Thanks,

Brandon

A:File Server????

You actually have a few options -

1) Usually with laptops its as easy and putting in the system restore CD from the date you bought the pc and bam you have just the base load on it.

2) A harder method is to load another OS as they have some that are specifically geared towards being a file server. You could use something like OpenFiler or FreeNAS if your into Linux. Remember they have to have the correct drivers and items to run on your specific laptop.

3) If you want a fresh install but don't have the original restore cd but havde a standard windows disk just boot to the windows CD within the prompts of setup you should be able to delete the partition and recreate a new one this as well will get the laptop clean.

One side note you may run into problems with the work laptop may not be able to "easily" get to the served files if the laptop runs off pf a work domain and you'll have even more problems if your using VPN to get into work.

What do you guys think about the following as a file server supporting about 35 users:

P4 1.6
1gb of RAM
80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache harddrive

Doable?

I'm trying to be as cheap as possible since the company doesn't want to fork out money for a new server.

A:File Server

Dusty,

Based on the info provided, of course it's do'able!

BUT we have no idea about how many read requests per second, minute, hour, day, etc will be the demand on the server. Nor do we know whether the data transfers are short and sweet, or several gigabytes per request.

Your configuration may be better off being 4 - 20GB hard drives that are SCSI, rather than 1 - 80GB EIDE???

Unless you know the demand requirements, how can anyone approve the design specs?

Situation: Currently running 1 server (Small Business Server 2000, domain and Active Directory) with about 35 workstations. I want to turn one of the workstations into a dedicated file server. That workstation that will become a file server is a P4 1.8ghz running WinXP, 1gb of ram, WD 7200rpm 120gb hd.

What's the best way you guys think of running it as a file server? Setting up one login in that file server and having everybody connect to it using that login, or setup individual logins for everybody?

I'd like to use my big PC as a file server at times. I have a Siemens Speed Stream 2624 Wireless DSL/Cable Router.

I read an article that stated that I could bring my computer out of standby upon access from my laptop. The article said to change my IP manually and that I was able to do this within certain parameters specified by my router. I changed my IP address in Windows, but left the default gateway and subnet address the same. I unchecked the assign IP address automatically. After I did this, I could not connect to the Internet, so I ended up changing the settings back to what they were since obviously, I'm confused as to what else may need changed within the router setup.

What I want to do is to bring the big PC out of standby when it is needed (to access files, save files to it, from my laptop) without running to turn it on all of the time.

In addition, I would like to use the printer attached to the big PC without turning the big PC on or having it come out of stanby when needed for this task too. The printer is an HP Officejet 4100. There is an outlet on the router for print server, but do I not need the printer to have that capacity?

My big PC is running Windows XP Professional and my laptop is running Windows Vista Premium Home Edition.

Also, I'm connected wirelessly through my laptop. My wireless network is not encrypted. When I've tried to secure it (WEP), my router won't let me connect.

I know this is alot of information. Can anyon... Read more

A:Using My Big PC as a file server, etc.

If your wireless network in not secure then I don't recommend enabling file or printer sharing so my advice is to work on that problem first. You're better off using WPA-PSK than WEP if your router supports it-it's often easier to set up as well as more secure. So, first step, does your router support either WEP or WPA? If it's not in your manual then Siemen's really should be able to answer the question. If the customer service person can't then maybe you should ask to speak with a supervisor.

Once you get the network secured it should be easier to connect your printer to the router's print server than to share it via your big PC. It should also be a little faster-if you share it via your PC then first you need to bring your PC out of standby & then it needs to bring the printer out of standby and only then will it print. There are also networking issues between XP & Vista that can make the setup more complicated. (I don't recall for sure, but I think the more difficult issue would be having the printer on your Vista machine & sharing it with XP. Going the way you are I don't think it'll be all that difficult, but like I said I don't remember for sure.) Once the networking is set up it should be OK sharing it via your big PC if that's what you'd prefer to do. But I think the print server on the router would be faster & easier.

As for bringing your PC out of standby, I'd need to look into ... Read more

My older (third computer) needs a new operating system, and I don't want to pay . I will be giving this computer to someone who doesn't know much about computers, and the specs are as follows:

Intel Pentium III @ 866MHz
40GB Hard Drive (Not sure of brand nor speed)
128MB SD-Ram
(Model Sony VAIO #PCV-RX360DS)

I want to try to get a distribution of Linux on the computer, and since the computer is not currently running an operating system, and I'm not skilled with Linux (usually in the CPU or Vid Card section of this site so...) I need help. Thank you for any help.

A:Which Linux Distribution?

I've always found that the Ubuntu distribution is a good choice for this sort of computer. It's based on Debian . . . very stable and proven.
Try a "Live" copy first if you like.
Nothing is installed to the hard drive . . it runs completely from the DVD ROM.
To date I haven't had a problem getting it to find any hardware on laptops nor set-top boxes.
Good Luck

I have inherited a list of 57 email addresses that I will use frequently over the next months. Is there a way to create a distribution list in Outlook without having to enter each address as a new contact? Can I cut and past the whole list into a distribution list? Currently, I have savied as a word document and just cut and past into bcc field when I have to send, but I'd love to have this in an Outlook list if possible.

Does anyone know the maximum number of email addresses that one can include on a single message in Outlook? I have another list that has 194 names on it. What's the best way to send as a mass email? This is a neighborhood security patrol alert announcement email, not advertising.

A:Distribution list

Hi needhelp1950

Your ISP determines how many e-mail addresses you can send at one time. You might try a maximum of 25 addresses to see if that message is allowed through or not.
Otherwise, call your ISP to see what their limitations are.

Copy the e-mail addresses to a spreadsheet and Import them into Outlook.
First, Export your existing Contacts from Outlook as a .csv file to see the template that Outlook uses. Then copy the names into the .csv file and Import it back into Outlook.
Which version of Outlook are you using?

I work at a small private school that occassionally sends school information home to parents. The school has tasked me with researching a way that we, the school, can send emails containing the school information to parents.

Our list of parents who want to receive these emails is about 300 - 350 parent email addresses. Our desire is to develop emails containing important school related info. and email everybody on the list as a BCC. Our desire is to transmit these emails but not allow anybody to "Reply" to the emails.

Does anybody know of an easy way we can email messages in mass?

We are hoping for a simple and economical way to simply send one-way emails to parents.

We do not want to use the current email engine that presently exists within our school system. (The reasons we don't want to use our current email system is a whole other story and is not for this forum.)

I am new to forums and hope I haven't over stated my self. I will appreciate any feedback from anybody.

A:Email Distribution

Create a distribution list. I don't understand what you mean when you say you can't use "the current e-mail engine". Are you referring to the client or the server?

I am responsible for about 225 Windows XP PCs on a Novell network. If anyone has experience pushing updates or new applications to several hundred PCs, I am looking for the best (easiest) way to do this. I just finished an upgrade that I did using sneaker-net, and it was too much.

A:application distribution

LOL, Sneakernet, haven't heard that term in a while....

here's a couple places to start digging,
mostly the type of thing like running them from a network share on some server via batch file or script, plus Microsoft has quite a few options in the remote deployment arena

It may or may not be exactly what you're looking for, but at least it's a start.
edit: I dunno what's up with the domain on that last link, I didn't even notice it until after I posted it, I'm looking into it, that's just weird.

I am interested in creating a website where people can go and sign up to receive a green newsletter. The only information I need for them to provide is there name, email address and age range. Is there a program that I can purchase and put on Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 server. I prefer not to use an outside service like constant contacts. I would like the program to automatically save the information after the person enters it so that it does not have to be imputed manually. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi all! I have a client who's looking to lock some Excel files down so they can't be moved or emailed out from their server. I figured removing Copy Permissions was the easiest way to do this, but the catch is he needs the employyes to be able to move the spreadsheet to and from different directories.

I Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to approach this. I considered Sharepoint, but have just installed and begun to play with it - so I"m not sure if even it will do what we need it to do. Does anyone have anysuggestions on the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks a lot!!

My company is using a backup system and each night when it backing up it reverts back to the old and any changes or files that we removed come back and revert to the original file. What are we doing wrong? It is causing extra work each day to fix the changes and re-delete items that are not needed.
Also this is a recent change we changed the way we backup and since then it has been an issue. Before it worked fine. also no going back to old way...they want to save money
