Printer not working in Win8.1 after May15 Windows updates

Q: Printer not working in Win8.1 after May15 Windows updates

After doing a batch of MS Windows updates on May 16 on an Asus laptop preinstalled with Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit installed, I have not been able to do any printing except to an older HP Deskjet F2120.
Other printers (Samsung CLP365, Lexmark E230, HP Laserjet etc) cannot be printed to.
The same problem occurs with printers regardless of network or local.
I can set up a printer using either software from the printer vendor or let Windows find the printer, and still the same problem.

The laptop is running fine apart from the printers issue and so I don't want to get a new PC, try System Restore, or anything similar.
The printer setup runs smoothly, but once the printer has been set up I go into Devices and Printers and select the printer, the following error messages come up:
Right-mouse click on Printing Preferences: 'Operation could not be completed'
Right-mouse click on Printer Properties: 'The <xyz> printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?'
However, when I go into 'Printer Server Properties' and the 'Drivers' tab, the <xyz> printer driver is shown to be installed.
For exmaple, this happened yesterday when I visited some friends near work and did a test with a Brother inkjet MFP they had - the first time I had ever connected my laptop to a Brother printer.
Therein lies the conundrum ...
And just to show that it's not driver software problems ...
I can download a setup file for a Samsung printer off the Samsung website, that allows you to set up a printer without it needing to be physically there/attached to the PC.
When I run this on the laptop, it sets up OK but gets the error messages in Devices and Printers as indicated above (all since 16 May only, where the timing suggests a likely cause being one of the Windows updates).
When I run this very same driver setup file on my work PC, it sets up OK again but no error messages, instead the correct screens/boxes come up, as appeared on my laptop with the CLP-365 up until the morning of May 16.

Any advice on how to fix this, especially if any of the above suggestions may be useful, is welcome. I have no idea what to do.

Even the IT support company at work hasn't been able to find a solution.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Roll back before you installed those updates. If the printers do not have Windows 8 compatible drivers, you are stuck in a really hard place.

We are preparing some deploy of Windows 8.1 tablets to use the native Metro (Modern) email Client using EAS to connect to a Lotus Domino Email Server.

Initially we can configure the email server connection, via Exchange Active Sync, without any issue and everything is working and syncing good.
At this time OS version was 6.3.9600 16384.

After Windows Updates the OS version is now 6.3.9600 17415 and the focused email client stop working and don't sync.

Looking for the account definitions when OS was on the previous version
(6.3.9600 16384) it was possible to define if the connection will use SSL or not. With the new OS version (6.3.9600 17415) the same account settings show now a "ghosted" option to activate or deactivate SSL. This could mean the newer version are forcing the SSL use...

From the server side the SSL is up and running and I already setup the same account, that have trouble with the Windows Client, in a Android Tablet using SSL and also with Windows 10 and it work without clues on both.

If I decided to make the Windows Updates before setting up the email Client using EAS even knowing the settings required for the account config are absolutelly correct, the email config routine insist saying "to check the parameters" and apparently the account is not added ... but ... but if I reboot the machine and look for the account it is there with the settings inputed and with SSL checked and ghosted, but continuing not working.

Lately, there has been in excess of 20 win8.1 updates which all fail to install. This is very time consuming especially when the "changes" have to be undone. I have an HP/Compaq 6200 Pro, 4G Ram and Win8.1. Is there any reason for this, for example, is it just a "bow" to the upcoming upgrade to Win10 or something more akin to the Company that can't seem to get things straight after only 25+ years in the business?

A:Win8.1 updates

You could review your update history and make note of those updates that failed to install, then you can download the individual installers and try it that way. Also change the way Windows Updates works, so that you are prompted to download the updates; that way you can review the list and not check those that have been failing to install. Once a month try again to install those manually, until the issue goes away. That is how I eventually beat this problem. Just my Ę2 worth.

what does it say when you try to print? do reinstall the drivers from the HP cd or website.
i also noticed when doing MS updates there are the optional updates which includes hardware/software drivers which i don't run by the way. as long as the hardware is doing what's supposed to do, there's no need for driver updates. that's what i think

I am wondering if anyone would know why a windows update would erase my printer from the list of printers. It doesn't happen every update, but it does quite often, and of course I cannot use my printer. It just evaporates off the list !! I have been using system restore, for lack of a better idea of how to get printer back. This is rather ridiculous and would like to know why this happens and if there is a way to fix it. I know some people would say this isn't a good idea, and for the most part I agree. The situation is this, our son is going away to school and has had a couple of instances when he was working on something and the PC had to restart to complete an update. He comes home enough so we'd like to run the updates when he's home. Plus I like to research the updates a little to see if there's any high flying issues with any of them.
So, how do I switch updates to manual in WIN8? I looked from the Admin account and didn't see any option, and I can't remember if there ever was......

The printer is never described as the OS. It is stated by the model. What is the model of the HP LaserJet that you are using? Go here Supported Printers for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 | HP? Support to find the best driver or to see if your Laserjet is supported. It should be, since most Laserjets use Jet Direct, which is tried & true, and works with just about any OS out there.

Hi there.
I've made a factory settings restore on my laptop.
Antivirus has been removed.

I need to install all Win updates in order to be able to upgrade to Win 8.1.

All updates are listed correctly, but when I try to install them (10 items each time), I almost always receive a message frow Windows, that sounds like this "ailure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer".

I tried solving this issue running the correct Microsoft FixIt application, but nothing has changed.

I disabled all services and application at boot. Nothing!

I see that a small part of the updates have been installed, but there are at least 166 files wating to be downloaded and installed (about 1.5 GB... ).

Thist behaviour is very strange. The laptop was running Win10... all the updates from w8 to w8.1 and from w8.1 to w10 have been installed once.
I had to restore my system because of terrible problems.

What's goin' on!?

Hello there,

Background: i have an ASUS N56J laptop, for a little over a year now and seriously? This thing is absolutely amazing, it shows practically no signs of slowing down. Win8.1 was user friendly, i could run any and all programs on it wothout problems.

So, i like to keep things the way they are amd decide for MYSELF what tools are useful. I generally don't use much windows/microsoft products apart from Office or some games, and microsoft LOVES to plague you with adware, so naturally i chose to "decide which updates get installed and downloaded".

Today, i was mucking about on my laptop trying to install something but it mentioned other programs were in use (not related to my problem) so i decided to restart, so everything would close and the issue would stop (it wasnt any update or microsoft related thing).
Apparently because of some kind of fluke it told me it would restart AND UPDATE. I thought to myself that perhaps this was some kind of vital update that just had to happen after a while.

When the computer came back on it started installing a whopping 194 updates. At update 61, it got stuck. And i mean really stuck, for well over 3 hours. I can do nothing except move my mouse. Other forums said the only way toget it to start normally (because this updatw is apparently notorious on win8.1) is to take out the battery. So i did and when it started back up, it wanted to configure updates. This took another hour, thenbit said it failed and was goi... Read more

I bought a cheap Acer Aspire computer from Wally World that has Windows 8.1 on it.

A:win10 upgrade insists on completing win8.1 updates, which fail

Personally, because you have a backup drive, I would clean install Windows 10 to the new drive. You can download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool . You can pull the key with produkey and use it during the Windows 10 install.
You most likely will not need many drivers after the install. If you do then check your Aspire's website for Windows 10 specific drivers.
What is the model number of the Aspire?

when I restarted my PC yesterday it had to do some windows updates, but it the windows updates failed and it tried again and again in an endless loop. I decided I had no choice and switched the PC off and restarted.

Since then everytime I let it boot normally theres just a blackscreen with a blinking underscore when the windows loading logo should appear. I'm able to access BIOS but nothing else.
After some time I decided to try to wipe the HDD, but when I'm trying to enter the setup from the windows boot CD it stops at like 1/5 of the loading screen and after a long time it says that there was an error at communicating with my HDD or CD.

My guess is there is something at fault with my HDD. Can I test if it is still working or repair / wipe it and make it work again somehow?

(BIOS still detects the HDD and CD btw.)

Have you tried downloading each update individually from the list that comes up? I'm assuming that when you use Windows Update, you get a list of all possible updates. When there, just select a single one, and see if it downloads. If it errors out, it should give you an error code. Please post that here.

I was given a computer from my uncle with Windows XP SP3 installed. Have had this computer for a while and it worked great. A few weeks ago, a virus got onto the computer. I got rid of the virus but now the Automatic updates won't work. The Security Center says the automatic updates are turned off, but it won't let me change the setting, so I went to System in the control panel. The automatic updates tab in System says that Automatic Updates is turned on yet I'm not able to even download any updates. Even from the Microsoft Update website. Wanted to try sfc/ scannow, but I don't have the original cd and my uncle doesn't know where he put it. Another website suggested running a batch file with the following commands in it:

@echo off
if exist %windir%\system32\wups2.dll goto fix32
if exist %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll goto fix64
goto error
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
goto eoj
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 %windir%\syswow64\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
goto eoj
echo Unable to locate wups2.dll operation aborted

This didn't work either.

Think it might have something to do with the .dll files as those were the ones that got corrupted by the virus.

Has anyone found out if their updates don't come through after installing sp1? If so, can you help me figure out why. I have windows 32 bit os and it is set to install automatically at 3 am, but my compuer is always asleep then, but when I wake it up in the am, I used to get a windows symbol at the bottom right telling me there is an update avail.! Now, it won't do that after the update to sp1? I just recently changed the time to auto. update at 1 pm, when my computer is turned on, so I am waiting to see if it will do that. I have checked the options and they are set right, I just think that after the install of sp1 my os now does not recognize when there is an update avail., I have not seen that anyone else is having this problem?

You computer needs to be on to receive the updates. Their might not be any updates available after sp1. Go to your security stting and serach for updates to see if their are any.

I've been away from my pc and now I'm trying to update and it keeps checking for updates forever.

I tried the following:

"Fix it" does nothing more than getting stuck looking for updates forever (again).

I tried manually resetting windows updates following some tutorials with no avail.

I tried installing windows 10 upgrade and then clicking disagree at the licence page following some suggestions to fix this but nothing changed.

So I just dont know what to do?

It depends how long you have been away from your PC. Updates can take a long time. How long had you been away from your PC and how long is "forever"? If it has been a couple weeks, there could be a long list of Updates which could take a few minutes to install.

I have this older Dell Inspiron which I seldom use. When I've tried using it again it's ridiculously slow and sluggish. Every program, every window folder I open just slow as hell. And now the windows updates get stuck at 0% and I can't update anymore. I've tried every online fix I've been able to find for the updates issue. But nothing. If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it. Thx.

Did you recently install/reinstall/upgrade the operating system? If yes, did you install the Dell System Software (if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Windows 7/8 is supposed to provide the webcam drivers for most Dell computers. If you system needs webcam drivers, go to Drivers and Downloads enter your service tag, then select your operating system. If your system needs webcam drivers, they'll be listed under Input.

Several people, including me, are having issues with WMC not working after doing the latest Windows updates.
Please see this TheGreenButton forum.
Programs appear to be recording if watching them, but they are not there when done..
And trying to click on & select a program to record from the EPG causes WMC to crash.
So far no update has been determined to be the cause. Could a NETFramework update cause such a problem?

We have a windows update group policy applied to various users machines in our domain. The policy is to automatically restart / update users machines if they are logged off. This does not appear to be working in any case.

I have compared the registry settings on machines to what they should be if the policy applied and they are correct:

AUOptions - 4
NoAutoRebootedWithLoggedOnUsers - 1
ScheduledInstallDay - 0
ScheduledInstallTime- 1

This would imply the install / restart should be happening automatically at 1am if no user is logged on.

When users come in in the morning and log in they immediately get a "Restart your machine to finish installing updates" dialogue and it is driving us insane!

Can anyone please advise ?

I just purchased an HP Pavilion p6732f (running Windows 7 64-bit).

I installed my old printe r(Epson Stylus CX 4800) with the new drivers supplied from their website which are compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.

The scanner works fine, but oddly enough, I cannot print anything, from any program! And the status monitor just hangs.

I have tried numerous things and believe the reason is the port. The printer is connected directly by USB and the port settings are on LPT1 port. Normally, I would change the port setting to "USB Virtual Printer Port" but it is not available. Is there any way of fixing this issue? Any way of making that port setting available?

The only other thing that could be the problem is a defective cable... But I doubt that is the problem...
In help would be appreciated! Thanks.
