Handbrake Alternatives

Q: Handbrake Alternatives

What are some alternatives for Handbrake? I've used Handbrake on my Mac for years, but heard the windows version doesn't work as well. I want to be able to backup copies of my DVD and also have digital versions for my netbook.

Preferred Solution: Handbrake Alternatives

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

have you tried handbrake yourself?

have a look at dvdshrink - it can rip and backup. it's pretty basic, but it's free.

as far as commercial software goes, dvdfab is very good and can convert to h264, but it costs unfortunately.

Recently dumped my iMac for a Windows 8 POWERHOUSE from Dell. Unfortunately my Handbrake app will not copy commercial DVD movies, although this is easily done on a Mac running Handbrake. Any suggestions? Any FREE Handbrake styled alternatives for Windows out there?

A:Handbrake and Win 8

you need to bypass the copy protection before you can get handbrake to transcode it. how did they get around that on the Mac???

once you've ripped the movie to the hard drive sans copy protection, you can easily use handbrake on it.

Slysoft is well-known for a slew of great products. Check them out. Also DVDFab.

the free stuff is kind of antiquated. stuff like DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, etc.

Hey guys, I have to rip a DVD for my class assignment and splice two clips together, so my professor told use to use Handbrake to do it. However, when I click "open source", my dvd file isn't there. I downloaded a file called libdvdcss-2.dll to see if that would work and I keep trying to open it on my computer but my computer keeps saying that I don't have a program to open it with. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit, and when I tried to rip a DVD, after about one hour, an error came up saying something about "This log's size is over 100mb, so there's a problem". So how do I fix this issue?
EDIT: I checked the encode log file, and it said "Block Code disabled" or something like that. Is it just copyright protection?

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum.

If I own a DVD purchased out a shop and I want to place a copy on my Hard Drive, is it legal in the UK to do this? I tried Handbrake to rip a music dvd (owned [personally]) but it wouldnt play the file back. Tried WMP and VLC but neither could read the file. Is this an ordinary occurance and all i need to do is try again and hopefully the next time it will work?

A:Handbrake and DVDs

I can't answer about the legality, but I can tell you that you skipped a step. You need something to remove the protection first. The most common and easiest method is to use DVDfab HD Decrypter (which is free) to rip the movie to your HDD, and then Handbrake can take that folder and turn it into whatever type file you need.

Circumventing Copy Protection - While we believe it's reasonable to make backup copies of CDs and DVDs that you own, a lot of people break copy protection for the wrong reasons. The law is still vague, at best, as to if it is legal to break copy protection in order to make such a backup, even for personal use. (The DMCA, for example, seems to make it illegal.) As a result, we do not allow discussion of how to break copy protection at this time. Recently downloaded some full movie (mp4), and found a Hebrew subtitle. Located both files in a folder,
opened the subtitle with Notepad, made some minor editing, saved it (encoding UTF-8) srt file,
movie and subtitle same name.
Played the movie in any player on the system, the subtitle rans perfect, no need to adjust timing.
Then I loaded the movie in "HandBrake ( - 32bit)", imported the subtitle, selected Hebrew and
utf-8, made a small preview file - subtitle was not added.
Note, I used the same procedure several times ago with other movies - results were good.
Do not know what happened, I would ask for some help please.

I rip my DVDs for playback on my Xbox360. I accomplish this by using Handbrake 0.9.3, since it contains a nice, neat profile for my 360.

The two newer versions of Handbrake do not support profiles, and I'm unaware of any way to export the profile and add it in to a new version. I've found plenty of strings online to try in the newer versions, yet none of the outputted files will play back on my 360. Ones done in the older 0.9.3 with the 360 profile work just fine, on my computer and the console.

Is there anyway around this, or anyway to get the original profile settings into 0.9.5?

The only thing i can think of is Taking note of what your 360 profile settings are in .9.3 and re-creating them in .9.5.

Also, the AppleTV/AppleTV 2 profiles should work on your 360.

Hi. Until yesterday, I had Handbrake 10.2 installed. On launch, a message appeared (within the GUI) inviting me to click for 10.3. Which I did. I can't recall the exact sequence of events but it appeared to have gone smoothly and I was left with a popup saying Do you really want to uninstall 10.2? I said Yes as that seemed logical.

I then went to open up 10.3 ? nothing there. The only Handbrake related file I could find was a defunct link to the shortcut I had on my desktop. Ah well, so off I went and downloaded the 10.3 installer. But before I ran it, I used regedit to delete all registry entries referring to Handbrake. That way, my PC would be 'clean' right?

After the install, 10.3 launched and immediately showed a message about my previous presets and there it was ? 10.3 had the custom preset that I'd made with 10.2! Not only that, but 10.3 was able to load a DVD with DRM protection. To do that with 10.2, I had to copy a 'special' dll file into Program Files/Handbrake.

It seems I was mistaken then. Uninstalling a program and then deleting registry entries doesn't 'clean' your PC. Otherwise, my Handbrake 10.3 wouldn't have known about my old preset nor would it have the 'special' dll file.

So how DO you completely remove a program?

Hello. I'm ripping DVDs so that I can post snippets of scenes to put on Youtube videos within fair dealing laws. I'm trying to rip DVDs with Handbrake and it does create a file with playable videos, and there are no problems with the sound. However the picture quality comes out noticeably degraded. This might be a compression but I'm not sure.

I've tried adjusting the bar of the "Constant Quality -- RF" bar under the video section to increase image quality before downloading and adjusting over relevant variables but to no avail.

What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

i'm getting a KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE BSOD shortly after or by execution of the win10 version of handbrakeCLI (uses x264 encoder).
In compability mode (win7) it seems to work.

I updated the drivers before the last bluescreen (from the Lenovo homepage) but that didn't do the trick.

Laptop was upgraded from Win8 to Win10 some while ago. Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

A:KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE while attempting to use x264/Handbrake

Could you explain to me what this handbrakeCLI software is? I'm unfamiliair with it.

Dumps point to dxgmms2.sys or ntoskrnl.exe. Don't think it's an application fault, is it?

Most of the crashes show some stuff of the DirectX Kernel graphics (dxgmms2.sys) what points to the display drivers usually.
The ntoskrnl.exe is Windows Kernel, simplified it is never the true cause unless you experience a hell lot of problems (much more then only bluescreens).

Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known cause for BSOD's.
Please remove Daemon Tools and run the SPTD pass through remover.

Uninstall Daemon ToolsDownload the SPTD standalone installer and follow these steps:
Double click the executable to open itClick on the button shown below

If the button is grayed out, like in the image, there is no more SPTD installation on your system, and you can close the window

I recently got into ripping Blu-ray movies and encoding them. However I have recently had a few blue screens with restarts. I use MakeMKV and it usually runs fine and doesn't give my problems. However, I have had problems encoding the MKV files with Handbrake v0.9.5. Here are my system specs:

Windows 7 64-bit Pro SP1
Intel Core i5-2500K (overclocked to 4 GHz)
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B)
ASRock Pro3 Gen3 Mobo (latest BIOS update 2.30)
Mushkin Chronos 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HD
Nvidia GTX 560TI graphics card (slightly overclocked, can't remember speed)
Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU cooler

The case also has plenty of fans (7 to be exact). 2 intake fans in the front, 1 intake in the side, 1 intake on the front of the cooler, 1 outtake on the rear of the cooler, and 2 outtake on the back and top. So the tower is staying cool. I'm running AXTU Hardware Monitor during the encoding and temps are staying steady around 50C, which I've heard are normal. The encoding is about 50% now and so far no crashes or spikes in temperature.
I thought the memory may be the culprit and I ran MemTest86. It returned one error after a few hours of running. I have not taken the RAM out to test each module or clean the slots. The timing is set at 9-9-9-24 and I dialed down the speed to 1333 from 1600.
That's all I can think of now but if I forgot something, don't be afraid to ask. Please someone help me!

I get the aforementioned BSOD, only in one specific situation, and it happens 100% of the time. Otherwise, I never get BSODs in this computer. The problem happens only when I open Handbrake, and drop an mp4 on it to use as a source. The moment I do that, boom BSOD. It's extremely strange. I have tried reinstalling Handbrake of course to no avail. For now my only solution is to have a Ubuntu VM with Handbrake and run it that way. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks.

Hi there

Converting 1080p MKV files encoded in H264 to H265

What's the best setting to use keeping original quality as much as possible -- a 2hr film currently with my H264 encode is around 4GB for MKV file.

The source is full HD 1080p captured from SKY Q minibox. Quality on playback is excellent but I want to store a lot of these on an external HDD so want to compress the size down a bit.

(note you need to use an HDMI splitter to get stuff off the SKY Q minibox otherwise the capture device won't see anything (DRM).

The capture device doesn't unfortunately capture in H265 which is why I need the conversion step.

I would like to get about 50% of that size with H265 - but not sure of the settings in Handbrake I should use.

Any video editors here --help please !!!!!

I'm not bothered if the final container is MKV or MP4 so long as it's encoded H265 and quality is very similar (preferably identical) to original file.

A:BSOD when running handbrake or during large file transfers

Your .dmp file shows a stop error of 0x124 which is a general hardware error .

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress

Some generic advice.

If you are overclocking STOP. Return to the default settings at least for now.
If you are running a RAID update its driver.

For ease of use, i want to make a folder available at my company network for people to drop any video files in, and then to make it output to a standard format (mp4) in another folder. That way no one will have to wait for a video to finish encoding or have to think about conversion at all.

I can use a computer that is always on and running, connected to the network and with free space and processing power, but i wonder if this is the right way. What i have so far:

Using Syncback Pro, I'm automatically watching for file changes in the folder, then syncing the changed files to a local folder (so not to directly encode from the network. Then, after each sync i have Syncback run a bat file for converting, which is inside the local folder. This is the code:

FOR /F "tokens=*" %%G IN ('DIR /S /B *.*') DO "C:\Program Files\Handbrake\HandBrakeCLI" -i "%%G" -o "%%G".mp4 --preset="Normal"

The problem is that it outputs in the same folder as it inputs, which makes syncing back to the network sloppy. The next step in the process, which would be to sync the output files back to the network can be easily done, but not if the original and converted files are jumbled together. =

My question would be:

Am i doing this the right way? (in the broadest sense)
Is there a way to output handbrakeCLI converted files to a different folder?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi ppl here!

I have:
1 dynamic IP from provider
1 Server with HTTP; FTP and Mail (more will be added)
1+ Client to connect through server to internet.

I need:
A program to use as a proxy, with which I don't need to edit any changes on the clients. Just set static IP and let go with surfing. Currently I've got a little proxy on my server, which enables me to surf in internetexplorer and chat in MSN, probably some more things, but I cannot use Outlook Express without editing many settings and Steam (VALVe) is not able to use proxy settings at all.

Am I able to use a router for these purposes? I must be able to run HTTP; FTP and Mailserver on my server.

Thanks for help!

A:Alternatives to ICS?

A router will indeed do what you what.
You can still run HTTP, FTP and a mail server; configuring the router to forward the appropriate (HTTP/FTP/Mail) ports to the server.
Your other client PCs do not need to connect the server in order to access the internet they simply do that via the router.

As a member, you can always start a new thread of your own. I had thought to create one myself, but with many of the options covered in other threads, decided against it.
Maybe this thread will turn into what you want, so I'll throw out the first option. Linux Mint, for non-PAE users, users are restricted to version 13, however the good news is that it's supported until April 2017.
For those with more recent hardware (PAE enabled CPU's), one can run more recent versions. Linux Mint is the closest drop in replacement for XP that I can think of, followed by Zorin OS. That one has a look changer, can give the XP or 7/Vista Start Menu feel.

Can anyone recommend free / open source alternatives to Netmeeting?

What I need is an application that will allow someone to share their desktop with other meeting participants for presentations. The meeting hosts/participants will potentially be using XP and/or Vista. Any suggestions?

Since I can't get Fraps to record my desktop (or select a window or selected record area) I am looking to find some alternatives to it.

Later tonight I am going to watch a live video stream of a concert and need to find a way to record live video streams. Such as a recorder that lets me select a single window or fullscreen to record.

Anyway, if you stop by, just toss in a suggestion to a program you use or think should do the trick. Thanks ahead to any suggestions.

A:Alternatives to Fraps

do you have any preferences? IE: free, low memory print, export format, ect.

I use VLC player because, well, I just always have. It does a things I need like recording what's playing so that I can make smaller video clips.

The only problem with the functionality of that feature in VLC is that it doesn't start and stop exactly when you press the button.

Does anyone know an alternative that will provide the mentioned functionality, but do it slightly better?

Googling brought me to try mediaplayer HC, MPlayer and MPUI, Media Player Classic and some others, but they start going downhill after that.

End of XP...Should you give Linux Ubuntu a try??         With the upcoming end of Windows XP support coming up quickly (April 8, 2014), it will be necessary to decide on a new operating system that you might like to use.  What the end of support means is that there will no longer be any patches to your XP system and leave holes wide open to attack that no firewall or antivirus solution can fix.  Many of you may have reservations on upgrading to another Windows operating system such as Windows 7 or 8 because it can be a bit expensive, the older system hardware you have may not really be compatible with Windows 7/8 or you might just be flat out tired of Windows all together.  There are alternatives to purchasing new Windows operating systems such as using a free Linux distro (operating system) like Ubuntu. I, myself, am an Ubuntu fan and have been using it for about a year now.  I have actually introduced my own wife and kids to Ubuntu and they love it as well.   I have provided some instructions below to download and run a Live CD so that you can test out how to Ubuntu works and whether or not this might be a viable option for you to use.  I certainly hope that you enjoy...------------------ Let's get started...first we will need to download a copy of Linux Ubuntu.  I recommend that you downloadUbuntu 12.04 LTS (Long-Term Support) so that you will receive support for this particular system th... I have been learning HTML (using Notepad) for the last couple of months or so through Online tutorials, and thank God, I am not doing too bad! But I want to create good pages with nice design. I think I'll need to use some sort of program like Dreamweaver but I am not sure. I haven't used it nor can I afford it! I am looking for a free alternative. I have seen couple of free ones described as 'Dreamweaver alternatives'... NVU, Amaya, Mozilla Composer (not tried any yet) but I don't know which to go for.

Any thoughts?

A:Dreamweaver Alternatives

I personally use Dreamweaver and I do recommend that if you can afford it in the future, but as for free WYSIWYG HTML Editors I would recommend NVU (which I used before Dreamweaver) and CoffeeCup HTML Editor http://www.coffeecup.com/html-editor/. I believe that CoffeeCup is a trial version, but it is much cheaper than Dreamweaver ($49??). Also, Dreamweaver does have a fully functional, 30-day trial version if you want to use that for the time being. Both of these should satisfy your needs for an HTML Editor.

Anybody know of any SpinRite Alternatives..?? http://www.grc.com/sroverview.htm
I need some decent HDD app to check low level for bad sectors and data recovery ect..

I tried SpinRite, but it keeps always giving me this damn "Division Overflow Error" no matter what HDD I use or what settings I configure in my BIOS..!!
And given the fact that the program hasn't even been updated yet since June 2004, I would prefer to use something that's a lil more newer & updated & geared towards today's modern HDD's...!!

Anybody know of any good apps that work like SpinRite does..??

diagnostic software and utilities from the manufacturer of your hard drive

Merger with Seagate, see Seagate for support.

Fujitsu (now supported by Toshiba)

Maxtor & Quantum

Try Seatools (Seagate) or Fujitsu Tools

Western Digital

Note... these do not do what Spinrite does, but they are good diagnostic tools.
I think some would argue that Spinrite is no longer as useful / important a tool as once it was.
In the early days of pcs and xt's with small drives around 10-40 meg... I was a huge fan of grc.
Today, grc continues to do good work... Personally, I just have not found Spinrite to be as important.

I have been thinking about getting a small lightweight laptop that is cloud based. However, I don't like the spying and censorship of Google. I have looked at Cub Linux, but the website seems to be inactive and unavailable. If Cub Linux doesn't come back, what alternatives are there for ChromeOS?

Might want to take a look at Porteus Kiosk - free and open source kiosk software for web terminals.

I am researching an alternative to Symantec for virus protection. I recently removed all of these programs from my laptop due to the extraordinarily long wait times I was experiencing at start up and while sending and receiving e mail.

Once I deleted it my boot up was lightning fast.

Are there any shareware programs which do not bog down the flow of data?

Hi There,

not sure if this is the right place,
but I'm thinking of asking for an MP3 player for christmas.
I think it may finally be time to give up on the tape walkman (yes, I know.. 20 years too late)

Anyway, Im looking for something a bit cheaper than an Ipod - I don't really care about how it looks.

Main requirements
- I have about 10/20G of music I'd want on there
- I use a Mac Mini with itunes - it'd have to be compatible.
- back-pocket size.
- less than 70.

Seems to me I saw a post that indicated there were better alternatives to Windows Easy Transfer ? I'm going from XP Pro to Win 7 pro.

Has WEP proven to be the safest/best way to more docs/settings/files etc after a 'clean' install of Win 7 Pro on a new hard drive ? ( Planning on keeping XP Pro on second drive...using bios controls rather than dual boot option )

Thanks, Tim

A:xp to 7 - any recomended alternatives to WET

I have answered a lot of questions about WET. Id say about 5% of the time there is a problem. The data to be trasnferred totally or partially disappears. I have used it myself and it was perfect. Everything was transferred, desktop, cookie, favorites, settings, everything but programs. If I had to again, I would use it, but have a second back up on an external HD, etc.

A:Are ther any Alternatives-PPD ?

Yes you can use MS Power Point Viewer. It's still a 25+MB File however. Take a look here: PowerPoint Viewer 2007PowerPoint Viewer 2007 lets you view full-featured presentations created in PowerPoint 97 and later versions. This viewer also supports opening password-protected Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them in the PowerPoint Viewer 2007

I've been using CounterSpy for a few months now, but recently it has been very bugged and causing many BSOD whenever I went into the control panel. I thought I solved the problem when I installed some missed drivers but the BSOD are back again with a vengeance and CounterSpy is the culprit. I know this because when ever I turn off the active protection I'm able to freely navigate the control panel BSOD-free.

What I'm looking for in particular is something like the EXE monitor that is included with CounterSpy. I just did a search but didn't find anything decent which is why I'm posting here.

Thank you.

I've been trying to look for a Cat5 to Coax adapter for the past few days so that I could hook an XBOX on a new tv to my router in my basement which is over 100 ft away.
I've been all over the net and to Best Buy and CompUSA. I've found a couple adapters online but they are only for test units for checking the line signal. At Best Buy they told me there was no such thing, check Radioshack. So I took the advice of someone on this board and headed over to CompUSA where I was told they had this product but CompUSA told me no. Now, since I've been told that there is no such thing im assuming that there is no such thing.

If someone could give me an alternative to going wireless and running a 100+ cable around my house I was appreciate it very much. Thanks!
