CPU fan speed Reduced for some reason

Q: CPU fan speed Reduced for some reason

Hey, i recently removed my CPU fan/heatsink setup in order to give in a clean from dust. This was due to the noise comming from it. It used to race at 4000RPM + and was noisy so i decided to clean it out.

Took it off, cleaned it, installed in back again and its running much quieter, however, now its running at a top speed of 2700RPM and the cpu tempature is averaging at 63*c.

Before i cleaned it out it ran at around 43*C at 3000-4000RPM. Im using speedfan to measure speeds and tempatures. Now for the info.

The CPU fan is a

Intel C33218-003 Fan/heatsink

I was wondering if anyone knew how i could get the RPM up a bit to cool the CPU down again. i hate seeing the flame logo beside the tempature on speedfan.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I`m rather hoping that someone can help me with a problem I`ve been wrestling with over the last ten days.

I`m subscribed to Virgin Media`s 30Mbps broadband service and my daily speed check (Speedtest.net) had given me an average of 31.69Mbps for the last two months, until ten days ago when it fell to just under 17Mbps.

My PC is hard wired to the Virgin super hub

If I boot up in safe mode with networking I receive the full 31Mbps. There is also another hard wired desk-top and a Wi-Fi lap top on the same home network (all three are using Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest version of Avast anti-virus) and they are both returning speed test results of 31Mbps.

So far I have:- Reinsalled Avast and run a deep scan - no problems found.
Run full scan with Advanced System care - no problems.
Run deep scan with Malwarebyes - again , nothing found.
Uninstalled all un-necessary programs.
Run speed test with Avast disabled.
I am allowing only Avast to run at start-up

I`m at the stage where I don`t know what to try next.
Any advice P L E A S E . Jim.

A:Reduced Download speed

So you mean that running on safemode solves the problem??
when booting in safemode it means that there are no programs being run while in windows startup unlike your default startup that commands some other programs to boot up.

In this situation, its likely to have programs involved to cause a decrease in your internet speed
why not try:
1.) clean your windows registry, you can use tuneup:http://www.tune-up.com/?tracking=UA-en-US%2C&utm_campaign=tuu2011&utm_medium=sem&utm_source=google&utm_content=tuubuy&x-rest=&gclid=COXZmJC6oq8CFWmk4god7Dq0Ww - if not continue to step 2

2.) Reinstalling windows - if not go to step 3

3.)Backup important files and reformat your hard drive and install windows again and so on....

I've been using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for the past 2 years. I've been using an Intel D945GCCR motherboard with 2GB RAM. My system had some problems, so I planned to format it. But everytime I try to do it, it gets stuck. When I used a Windows 7 Professional x86 disc, it got stuck after showing 'Loading Files' with a black background. It'll show starting windows, but not even the logo would come. Same happened with Windows XP disc, after 'loading necessary files', it too got stuck.

My Windows Experience Index was 4.4, 4.5, 2.0, 3.0, 5.4. But one day my system started to hang up, get 'Blue Screen On Death', etc. It became very much slow and sometimes it wont start. I thought it was something up with the motherboard and it turns out so, as said by the service center guys (Display Problems). So I changed mine to Biostar G31M+. Now all a sudden, the Experience Index of 'Processor Performance' dropped to 2.2 from 4.4 (It is a Pentium D 2.80 GHz).

Sometimes when it gets a trouble to start up, I just press the restart button and it shows that I'll have to use a Windows Repair Disc to correct the issues. But since I dont have it, I just tried to format it with another version of Windows 7. And hence, Paragraph 1. (And I could not format my system after changing into the new motherboard).

I had used various softwares to check the functionality of ram, processor speed, hard drive, etc, but everything looked fine.

What should I do?

A:Processor Speed Reduced.

You might like to start with steps as listed here: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

Also, with all due respect, the G31 motherboards are rather cheap and I'd be a little skeptical as to the reliability and performance of those motherboards. I had a couple, and had several problems. I have since learned to spend a few extra dollars on the motherboard, and spend less on repairs and and stress medication

You may have a fairly messed up system, trying to install Windows x86 over x64, and then using an XP disk. Perhaps a clean install would be a good place to start?

About a month ago my connection speed dropped by almost half. This is a huge problem because I'm on a dial-up and my average connection ranged from 42.5kbps-52kbps. The drop put me down to 26.4kbps MAX. That means that sometimes I actually get lower than that.

I have already tried the usual suspects, Phoneline, different modem, network settings, MTU, etc... I even called my ISP but as usual, they said it had to be either one of three things, my settings(which are correct) my phoneline(which I checked for noise as well as having the phone company check) or my modem isn't 3com compliant(I've tried three different modems and two of them were USR)

My question is, does anyone know of a way to restore my connection speed? Is there some settings I'm missing?

I have noticed the speed of my computer reduce drastically as of late. I assumed just the regular abusive of the hard drive and cluttering of windows and what not. But I checked SiSoftware and its posting my Cpu as a Core 2 rather than a Core 2 Duo.. And I checked my system settings and it is also posting my Cpu as a core 2 rather than a core 2 Duo. which If I remember correctly it always did before. Its now Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4 when i could have sworn it use to say Intel core 2 duo 6600 @ 2.4 X 2. I could be wrong. But It is defiantly a lot slower and SiSoftware is only detecting a core 2 processor. Also, my Cpu is running extremely Hot. about 70 degrees C. and thats pretty much Idle, With out running any load on the Cpu. The Fans are running and there is plenty of ventilation I have 4 fans cycling air into and out of the machine.

Anyone Have Any Ideas?

Hi folks. I've recently been experiencing a massive reduction in my download speed. 500kbps down to ~49kpbs.

The only changes that coincide with the anamoly is the installation of the new IE7. But I didn't notice it immediately, so I don't think that is the problem.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the modem or router that is supplying my connection. My landlord has claimed that everything is working fine on his end and he says the ISP (Batelco) is reporting the same thing.

My NIC (Intel Pro 100 on the 865GBF mobo) is reporting to be connected at 100Mbps.

Here's the funny part. My upload speed is unchanged. So, I'm downloading at ~49kbps, and uploading at the normal ~205kbps.

I've enabled and disabled the connection severa times, even used Repair. But nothing seems to be working.

Any ideas on this? Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Oh, and I've run Crap Cleaner, Ad-Aware, and my AVG antivirus is up to date and running.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hello,

Well, I'm paying for 2Mb/s (2048/256) cable internet, but recently the download speed was halved, look:

I first went to my internet provider's forum, and asked what's happening, but they told me that everything is working fine, and that signal is flawless in my region, and they told me that It might be a virus that is causing this. I'm using avast and spybot S&D, avast found nothing, and spybot found cookies and trojans, but it managed to clean it all up, but my internet speed is still halved, as you can see on the speed test.

So the only thing left for me to do, was to search for some help on other places online, and here I am.

My PC:
AMD Athlon II x4 630, 2.80 Ghz, 3.00 GB of Ram

Thanks in advance, and if you need any other information, tell me, I will provide it... :X

I have just reinstalled my system (XP Pro SP2). Authenticated updated and all. I haven't changed any hardware and in fact I reinstalled less software than before.
Since reinstallation, I've noticed considerable deterioration on scroll speed (eg in Firefox and in Word & Excel. For firefox I've checked "smooth scrolling" it's off. Especially Word used to be up to 1page/sec while scrolling with arrow keys, now is down to 5-6 sec/page. Also: normally Word shows the page numbers (lower left corner) changing as you scroll - not anymore in my case. Page numbers remain change only after scrolling stops.
Any ideas?
I can't say whether overall performance is reduced with certainty.
My 2.66GHz machine is clean according to avast antivirus, spybot, adaware & adwatch, Netscape's own spyware scanner. Reg mechanic finds no problems. HD (40GB) is error free and cleaned-up and defragmented. Smooth scrolling options are off.
Thanks to anyone who could help.

Hey.

My computer specs are:

2.8Ghrz Intel Celeron
1024MB DDR2 RAM
NVidia GeForce 6800
250GB SATA HDD
and a cheapo sound card i cant remember the make of.

It is running Windows XP SP2 - Pro

My problem is as follows. My computer is running extremely slow, for instance it can take up to 10 seconds for the start menu to appear and it crashes repeatedly. It simply freezes up with all programs not responding. If I leave it does eventually unfreeze normally accompanied by a Error Report for Windows Service Pack setup. What service pack it is talking about I dont know. I have followed the directions of another website on running cmd.exe to do something to my registries (I'm not sure exactly what as I'm not brilliant at computers) I have also downloaded Registry Fix v3, this found quite a few errors but fixing them didn't make any difference. I have tried also virus scanned repeately with AVG 7.5 and NOD32, scandisked and reinstalled Windows at least 3 times. I have even taken my harddrive round to my mates and plugged it into his computer as a secondary hard drive and formatted it. None of this has had any effect. I am at a lose as what to do. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have a new Windows 7 (64) build that seems to be having trouble indexing. When I search in Outlook 2010, I get "Search results may
be incomplete because items are still being indexed".
When I look at Indexing Options via Control Panel, it says “indexing speed is reduced due to user activity”, even when there is no user activity.
If I start closing applications and processes to reduce the “user activity”, it changes the status to “Indexing Completed”.
Then if I start Outlook again, it goes back to "Search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed".

When I look at CPU usage, it is near zero, so it would be nice in the indexer would kick it up and get the indexing finished so that I can search my emails.
Why is the speed reduced?  Is there no way to control it?

Thanks,
-Mark

Hi there, my laptop's speed and response was reduced drastically two days ago. The day before it happened everything was completely fine. Now the boot up itself takes 10-15 minutes, opening a windows explorer or a MS Office program will take 2-3 minutes and frequently freezes while opened. Video and music playing lags significantly.

I've tried scanning my system with avast and mbam in safe mode, but both found nothing. Avast won't run full protection although regular scanning is possible and avast's boot time scan won't work.

What may be the problem here? I'm completely baffled myself.
Could it be some type of spyware or malware that's eating up my computer's resources? I must also confess that I was running a P2P software the night before my computer slowed down. I've already deleted all files downloaded through the P2P software though.

I'm currently running
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.30 GHz
4 GB RAM

Any help would be great. Thanks!

For once I am posting a solution instead of a problem. I had complained to my ISP about a hesitation and speed issue. They agreed to upgrade my service from 15 to 25 Mbps. However when the guy was here to check the system he got that increased speed on my old Win 7 laptop, but could not get it as high with my new Win 8.1 much faster desktop PC. Ping time ranged from 40 to 56, and I was getting about 21 for download and 2.8 for upload. My laptop was doing about 7 for ping, 23 for download and 2.8 up. This is using the Speedtest by Ookla. He was unable to solve the problem but said he didn't like Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 was much better. Haven't we all heard that before.

In any case I did some Google searching and found similar advice - blame it on Win 8.1. I then stumbled onto a very accurate response that nailed the problem for me. I thought I would pass it on for those who may be having similar issues, or just want to tweak their system to best internet performance. Go to Control Panel, Device Manager, Network Adaptors, and open your adapter. Under the Advanced tab select Speed & Duplex. I found mine set to Auto Negotiation. It appears that this Auto Negotiation can slow your ping and even download time as it seems to take some time to get the negotiation done. I manually set my speed at first to 100 Mbps Half Duplex (which is what the poster said worked for him), but for me that didn't work at all. I then tried 100 Mbps Full Duplex, and Bingo. Ping time improved to 6 ... Read more

A:Win 8.1 Very Slow Ping Time and Reduced Download Speed

OK, now I am posting a problem. I have discovered that when I shutdown the computer and do a cold reboot, I loose the benefit of making the Speed & Duplex change from "Auto Negotiate" to "Full Duplex 100 Mbps". Ping times go bad again, and upload speed is reduced. When I go in and manually change it back to Auto and then back again to Full Duplex, my fast times are restored!!!

Any thoughts on what is going on?

First discovered this problem because I was unable to connect to a particular web site that was functional according to a friend that I was talking to on the telephone while trying to connect.

Problem: Network UPLOAD speed is randomly reduced from 2Mb to 600Kb while download speed seems unaffected (Abt. 30 to 50Mb). First eliminated the router, modem and cables as suspects working with ISP tech support. CAT 5 cabling to router and cable modem. Then I discovered that another machine on the network did not have this problem. I then discovered that disabling the network and re-enabling the network cured the problem.....temporarily.
Downloaded and installed latest NIC driver from MB web site. No solution. Downloaded and installed latest NIC driver from Realtek web site. No solution. Updated MB BIOS. No solution.

MB= Asus M5A97 EVO
CPU: AMD FX-4100
OS: MS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1 (Latest updates)
RAM: 8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 802MHz (11-11-11-28
NIC on MB Realtek PCIe GBE

Disabled TCP/IPV6. No solution.
I suspect it is one of the "Advanced" settings for the Realtek PCIe GBE, but I don't know what they do.
Anytime I disable and re-enable the network adapter my upload speed returns to normal. I haven't been able to isolate a particular action that causes the slow-down.
The attached pics show speed test, before and after disable - re-enable network adapter. Same server.
Any Ideas ?

Hi, i am not entirely sure about what happened. I tried to download a bit-torrent and it locked up my computer. The windows security center would not go away and the computer had slowed to a crawl. After rebooting i did not see any changes. I could not keep the task manager open, could not open the add/remove programs manager, and i could not open my AVG free virus protection software. Well, after uninstalling AVG, everything else went back to normal. EXCEPT the computer is still running sluggishly. I tried to reinstall AVG, but it takes forever! With my dual core processor and 2 gigs of RAM i should not be running this slow! Does anyone know how i can fix this problem?

After you run the Speedtest, you need to copy the URL it gives you for the badge, so we can see what you got. Post your ISP, make & model of Gateway you have, Computer spec's, specifically if you are using wireless or ethernet for connecting to the gateway.

Make sure you are using the proper driver for the network adapters, not the ones that come from Microsoft/Windows update.

Hi,

Day before yesterday my Laptop [Dell Studio] has suddenly stopped working and i have to shut it down forcefully. Then i logged in again but my wireless was not working, i have googled the solutions and tried to start the WLAN Autocofig service but its throwing an error : 1053 : The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely manner.

Suddenly the speed of my laptop reduced drastically. Now its taking almost 12 mins to start instead of 2 mins.

I have also removed some lines from the test files from the registry as mentioned in the below website as a resolution, but its not working.

A:[SOLVED] Wireless not working and Laptop's speed reduced drastically

Why did it stop working? How did it behave? What did you do before that?

Have you tried using System Restore?

You can still restore your laptop to the factory configuration without using a Windows media disc. If it came with Windows pre-installed you can try this:

1. Start or restart the computer.
2. Press F8 until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
3. Press down arrow key to select Repair Your Computer.
4. Specify the language sttings that you want and then click Next.
5. Log in as a user with administrative credentials and click OK.
6. Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
7. Click Next.
8. Select "yes, reformat har drive and restore system software to factory condition".
9. Click Next.
10. When done, click Finish to restart.

You should start using the manual or manuals for your computer. They can be very helpful. Since you didn't provide me with the model number of your Dell Studio I have only provided you with instructions for Dell Studio 1535 or 1536. You can find the manuals for this model here:

Documentation

The instructions for your particular model may be different. Which is why you should always provide the model number for better help. The model above had Windows Vista pre-installed. I see you are using Windows 7. But I think the procedure should be pretty much the same for all Dell Studio models. Just don't quote me if it does not work the same way on your model.

I have a Dell Desktop running XP, connected to my home wireless network with a Linksys Wireless G USB adaptor. My network has WEP security enabled. I've never had any problems as far as the network goes (except on occasion when the cable internet service goes out).

My system recently had a rootkit that was causing a variety of issues, not the least of which was Internet Explorer 6 not working properly and evidence of diversion of my browser to adware sites, etc. At the same time I noticed these problems and began tinkering, I found that my WiFi network connection speed was slower than normal, according to the connection status. It was and continues to show as 18 Mbps - 24 Mbps. It's not clear whether this was due to the "infection" or to a setting getting messed up during the initial attempts to figure out what was going wrong.

I just got through disinfecting the system (with a great deal of help from one of the members of this site). See here if interested in the details, with many logs, etc: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic88712.html

What is very strange is that I have two other computers in the same room, on the same network, and they were showing and continue to show the normal WiFi speed I get: 54 Mbps. There is clearly nothing wrong with my WiFi.

After considerable effort, my system now appears to be clean. All normal functionality has been restored...except that the connection status still consistently shows the reduced speed, usual... Read more

I have a Lenovo T460 (Windows 10, version1703, x64) which was updated to Windows 10 Creators version two weeks ago.  Since that time I have had Bluetooth and wifi issues.  While I think I have fixed the Bluetooth issues the wifi remains quite slow (computer to computer transfer).  My file transfer rates between computers , and my NAS (LaCie 2Big NAS) was ~ 8-9 MBps (64 - 72 Mbps), not super great but fine for backing up 2- 5 GBs of files every other day.  Now I'm lucky to have 1.2 MBps.  I have a Lenovo T430 (Windows 10 ver 1673) and a Lenovo T520 (Windows 7) which still transfer files ~ 8-9 MBps. I've run Windows troubleshooter, believe I have the correct (new) drivers for Intel (R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260. Although Intel has an updated driver (ver 19.71.0) while Lenovo still is recommending ver 19.70.0.100.  I typically stick with Lenovo's (posted) drivers  rather than going to Intel directly.  Is this a known issue with Windows Creators.  Might it be another problem.  I'm at a lose?? JR

Dear TSG & co.

I've been working on a huge doc in word (w/images)... Since it has grown (78 pages = 14'600kb), problems.

1) Track-changes was activated by default; seeing this as a potential source of problems, I deactivated in word. However, evertime I save and then open doc on another pc, the track changes reappear & doc is increased to 100+ pages of text & images. I believe this has blocked my pc (ASUS pro5di, windows 7, Office 2010) and corrupted or lost data.

Since starting with this doc, I realized that every time I create a new word doc, it opens as a very narrow page on the left side of the screen. It isn't the zoom: zoom was at 100% and when I increased it, I had to increase to over 200% to read any text.

Any ideas?

I currently have a download speed of 10mbps from my Internet service provider. There are times my wife is streaming on one device, and I am streaming from another. All devices support 802.11n. My wireless router, however, supports up to 802.11g. This seems like a stupid question, but is there any reason to upgrade to a Wireless n router with this ISP throughput limitation?

A:Any reason for 802.11n wireless router if ISP d/l speed is 10mbps?

In general I would say no if you are just talking about downloads.

But one benefit of Wireless-n is range. They send a better signal that could benefit reception and minimize drops.

But remember the other function is computer to computer connections over your LAN. So if you transfer large files, and your PCs have wireless-n and/or Gigabit NICs, then you will see a big performance boost inside your local network.

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?

My problem is with the download speed when using Firefox (tried IE8 and same slow speed).
When I run speedtest.net I get a download speed of between 0.2 and 0.5 Mbits/s and the pages take annoyingly long to download. I have communicated with others on forums in Cambodia who are getting 2 to 2.5 Mbits/s when browsing using the same dongle and when I run my Vuze torrent downloader I also achieve 2 to 2.5 Mbits/s. So I know these speeds are achievable through my dongle in my prese... Read more

I have a Windows 7 desktop (Acer Veriton). When using it, after a while (10 or 15 minutes perhaps) in which I haven't touched the keyboard, the brightness is suddenly reduced. Hitting any key, but not moving the mouse, brings the brightness back up again. After a while it does it again, and again seemingly at more frequent intervals. Eventually it comes to the point where even when I press a key the brightness stays low. I then have to right click on the desktop, choose Graphics Properties which brings up the Intel Graphics & Media Control Panel and reset the brightness from 0 to say 50%. It is usually OK after that for some time.
There's nothing wrong with the monitor - when using it as an additional monitor with a laptop with Win XP its brightness remains unchanged for hours.
It seems like a Windows power management "feature" but I can't find anywhere that could change it either in the Intel Graphics & Media Control Panel or in Windows. It's most exasperating.
Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this?

It's unclear from your post if you've checked Power Settings in Control Panel (not for your video card, for the system).

Dear Tech Support forum,

The past 2 years I have been using my EN9800GTX+ card and I have recently switched over to a HD5850. The problem lies with my monitor, it's a Syncmaster 204B.

The Syncmaster 204B is known for it's "blackouts" when running in DVI mode, I fixed those "blackouts" by creating a Custom Resolution in my Nvidia control panel and adding "CVT Reduced Blank" to the 1600x1200 screen.
This reduced the Refresh Rate of the screen from 60Hz to 59.9Hz and it made the "blackouts" stop, I haven't had a "blackout" for 2 years.

Now with my new Ati card, I can't find how to create custom resolutions and I'm stuck with a 'flickering' monitor. I heard some fixes about enabling 'Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolutions displays' in CCC, but I can't seem to find that option at all.

I'm using vista 32-bit.

Please help me, I'm pretty desperate.

Bios reset to defualts when you changed the battery, you need to enter the bios and reset the processor speed to it's correct settings

I've had a lot of reduced performance with my system lately, in addition to a lot of windows error messages for some reason. I just un-installed a handful of anti-spyware/malware apps because I had way too many.
Now I'm left with HJT, MalwareBytes (w/ active protection), TuneUp2009, ZoneAlarm, & Spyware Blaster
Is this sufficient protection?
Applications load up much slower and the start is lagged.
Otherwise I haven't had too many issues, a couple crashes few and far between.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Well, I've pretty much given up, I've tried everything, and I just can't seem to fix my problem. I'm hoping that someone here will have the solution to my problem. Let's start at the beginning; My dad had bought a new computer for himself, a HP computer, with it came a Windows Vista Installation CD, which was already installed on his computer. I still had Windows XP, and decided to go ahead and use it to upgrade. So, I put it in, everything worked fine, I don't remember correctly, but I'm pretty sure I either didn't enter a product key or it never prompted me to. Everything was fine though...for now.

It is now a few months later and yesterday I logged on to my computer to find a bright yellow screen with "Windows Vista Build 6000 Windows is not genuine" in the bottom corner of the screen and box that had three options. "Access Your Computer With Reduced Functionality", "Type A Different Product Key", and "Contact Dell For Support" (Weird, because the computer was an HP, maybe it's because his Monitor, mouse and keyboard was from Dell). At the top of this box it says "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation".

So, first thing I do is type in the correct product key on the second option, it works, but then error code 0xC004E003 comes up (The Software Licensing Service reported the License Evaluation Failed). Next, I tried scavenging the interwebs for a solution. I found a tutorial on ext... Read more

A:Reduced Functionality

Hello Escape the Fate, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This tutorial should help you get out of the Reduced Functionality mode. Afterwards, you will need to use a different product key number than you Dad's. You can only use the same product key number on only one computer at any given time. Plus, since this is a OEM Vista version, that product key number is tied to only your Dad's computer and will not work on another computer.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
