Question mark over Ethernet Controller

Q: Question mark over Ethernet Controller

I had a major problem with my computer and couldn't use Restore or do a Recovery. I formatted and re-installed Windows XP using my Windows XP disk. The problem is I cant get on the Internet. There are four other computers in the house, all of which can connect ok. After hours of trying to figure out the problem, and fiddling with the wires on the modem and router, I've discovered that when I look in Device Manager there is a yellow question mark with an exclamation mark against Ethernet Controller in Other Devices. When I right-click and select properties it says that the drivers are not
installed. Obviously I can't connect to Windows Update so my only option
is to install from a specific location. I've put my Windows disk in and
used the location D:\i386 and also D:\i386\system32 but it can't seem to
find the drivers. Another query is, should there be more than one entry
in Network adapters? I only have one, that being the 1394 Net Adapter. I
seem to remember another adapter being there in the past. So, if I'm on
the right path, can I download the required driver from the Internet and
copy it over, if so, can you tell me the driver file and the folder it
needs to be in. I hope that's enough information for you and look
forward to your reply. Thank you, Gary

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Do you have an onboard internet connection. If so, you probably use the Realtek driver. It is found at eMachines product support. It is also found at
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Langid=1&Level=5&PFid=6&PNid=6>
or www.RealTek.com or www.eMachines.com

Look for the RealTek RTL8139/810X Network Driver, version 2.1.22.1026 or higher. It will be about 3.78 MB or a bit more.

It will come with installation instructions.

It is usually a very easy, and very good network connection.

Hi all. . .I searched the forums and couldn't figure out how to fix my problem. I am not very computer savvy, so please forgive me if this sounds really dumb. .

My daughter has an A22M Thinkpad with Windows 2000 Pro. We can't get the internet to work after her b/f restored it to last known good configuration. Now, there is a question mark beside the "ethernet controller", PCI Serial port, and Display adapter under the device manager.

I went to the IBM site and downloaded the drivers for Ethernet driver for Intel PRO/100 SP Mini PCI combo card and reinstalled it but that didn't work. The question mark is still showing up. Any advice on how to fix this?

Thanks!!

Hello again.

In the device manager on my dell dimension 8300 my ethernet controller has a yellow question mark next to it.

I click on it, and i get the ethernet controller properties window. Under a section called device status I have a message saying that

[I]"The device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click reinstall driver."

So I click reinstall driver. Hardware update wizard driver appears.

"This wizard helps you install software for : Ethernet controller

If your hardware came with an installation CD or floppy disk, insert it now.

What do you want the wizard to do?
Install the software automatically? (recommended)
Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)"

So I insert the dell drivers resource cd that came with my computer, and i click install software automatically, then press next. The computer searches for a few minutes, but then i get a message that pops up that says i need files.

"Files Needed

The file e100b325.sys on Intel PRO Adapter CD-ROM or floppy disk is needed

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy files from: (There is a text box here with C:\drvtmp written in it) and a Browse button."

What is this e100b325.sys file?

I do not believe that I have a cd labeled Intel PRO adapter CD or floppy.

Is there a place online I can download this file and install it so that my ethernet contro... Read more

Im having problems wiht my "ethernet conntroller" under "other devices" in my device manager, I see a yellow exclamation next to it. Last time i formatted my machine (this one) I was able to find the driver, although it was a hassle and chase for it. My mb is a "Gigabyte EP45-DS3L". I have downloaded all kinds of drivers for it which seemed to fix another issue, but i just cant seem to get the right driver for the "ethernet controller" to get recognized. Ive installed a few "hardware detection" software programs and I was able to get the mb model at least, and if i remember correctly this boards drivers used the intel chipset but since im not online with it it wont tell me what chipset it is. For some reason I just cant find the correct drivers for this damn controller. Is this is a motherboard/hardware issue? Is this still a software fixable thing? Can someone help me out please?

Thanks
-boien

A:ethernet controller exclamation mark

What "hardware detection" programs have you installed?

GA-EP45-DS3L (rev. 1.0) - GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver

Here is the driver, select the download site for LAN, the "Realtek Realtek LAN Driver," that is closest to you.

Copy and paste your dxdiag to the forum. Also, if you can, provide the video card make and model. We can further diagnose your issue from there.

If you can't provide the card information, if it is completely stock, provide the make and model of your pc. We can probably find the card info/the motherboard information (if it is integrated video).

Hi,

Have any idea which is the driver for Win 8.1?

A:Satellite A200 - Win 8.1 : Mass storage controller yellow question mark

Hi

Please don't understand me wrong but I hope that you know how old A200 is. Even newer machines are not supported for Win8.
So, I can understand that you want to use newest OS on this old piece of hardware and if most of the things work pretty well you should be satisfied.
In this situation when you use 8 years old machine designed for Vista and definitely not supported for Win8/Win8.1 ..... who cares about SD card reader. You know what I mean? ;)

Simply disable this device in device manager and be happy.

Should I uninstall the pcmcia controller and reinstall or is there something else causing it to malfunction.

Firewall first so it's in place when you get back online. Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and scroll to Windows Firewall/ICS. Double click the Service and change the Startup to Automatic, click Apply and OK. Restar the computer and the warning should have gone away.

As for teh ethernet adapter, it's best to post back some details of your computer - make, model, etc. and someone will know which adapter you have and where to find the driver.

Hi, I have a I MSI U135DX for some reason it all of a sudden just stopped connection to the internet wirelessly but would connect via and ethernet cable. I have researched this and and struggling to get it sorted. I have managed somehow to connect again via the ethernet cable but still no wireless connection.

In my device manage it says network controller with a yellow exclamation mark but when I try to re install or update the driver it says the driver was not installed correctly. When I go to my internet connection or to set up a internet connection it does not even show any wirless conections.

I have made sure that the wireless connection is on and have eventurned it off and on to see if it would connect but I am guessing that it is a problem with this netwprk driver.
Please could someone help as I am at a complete loss now and have tried to download drivers from the MSI website but still no luck.

Hey,
I have a question (obviously), I recently redid my computer and may i say that everything is running wonderfully. There is only ONE problem that I cannot seem to eliminate no matter how much time or effort I put into it.

3 drivers, SM Bus Controller, Ethernet Controller and Coprocessor refuse to work properly. Every time I install the drivers I need for them and restart my computer I get a message from windows saying that it could not start properly, it gives me two options (well technically 5) load last working settings or start windows normally. Start windows normally restarts my computer taking me back to the exact same screen, selecting load last working settings lets windows boot but the 3 drivers appear in new hardware found again. I have tried at least 10 different sets of drivers for both the onboard graphics card (i know i need to order the PCIe card im getting still) as well as just the motherboard itself. I have installed all the drivers from the CD given w/ the motherboard and all work except these three. I tried multiple ones from the internet to no avail.

My specs are:
ASUS M3N72-D motherboard, chipset nVidia 750a SLI
Windows XP Pro, 32-bit
AMD Phenom 9600 Quadcore processor

I think that is all thats important, but if you need more just ask me, ill be checking this thread every few minutes.

A:SM Bus Controller, Ethernet Controller, and Coprocessor Problems

Sorry couldn't figure out how to edit to avoid double posting*

I have solved 2 of the 3 issues after spending about 10 hours of my day on them. I have fixed both the Coprocessor as well as the Ethernet Controller issue. Turns out they were just being rolled back with the load last working settings along with the SM Bus Controller which was the only one really having a problem. Still though, after uninstalling reinstalling disabling and so on and so forth, the SM Bus Controller continues to be a thorn in my side. I have disabled it to get rid of the annoying pop up every time the computer restarts (I figured this is ok b/c according to the device manager the device is inactive anyway so why not?).

Hello guys, I've been having a lot of issues with my AMD drivers, specially when it comes to chipset and video drivers. I recently had to downgrade my video drivers to June 2015 release date, that was the only solution found so I could run games properly (with recent drivers, games that should run with 100fps+ were running with 15fps)..

But that is not the point of this thread, instead, I'm here because after a few weeks running this drivers, I noticed my WiFi was not connecting to my router (wich is working, I can get access with other computers/cel phones). In my drivers list, the Ethernet controller and SM Bus controller are flagged as not installed.
I've tried to find these drivers, but AMD seems to only release packages of drivers. I've come to this download page:
Chipset

where I should be getting the drivers that solve my problem, but the big issue is: apparently, by doing it, i will be reinstalling the latest video drivers (for the APU), and that is ABSOLUTELY NOT what i want.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem? And I mean: where can I get the sm bus and ethernet controller driver w/o having to install a bunch of unnecessary drivers?

My notebook is a MSI 60X 3BE
video card: Radeon HD 8970M
chipset: AMD A10-5750M (with Radeon HD 8650G)
motherboard: MSI MS-16FK

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I've downloaded the drivers in the link, installed and SM Bus is running properly, but Ethernet doesn't. Any further help?

Hi,

Ever since reformatting my PC due to a complete spyware and malware takeover, i have had no audio. In device manager, there is a yellow ? next to Multimedia Audio Controller. I have tried to update drivers using my dell driver CD and the Dell website itself, but to no avail.

On another forum, someone said that perhaps it was because I had not installed chipset drivers, (which I know should be installed before sound devices etc) however I uninstalled my sound drivers, installed the chipset drivers, and re - installed my sound drivers (SoundMax one anyway) but again with no luck.

Curiously, if I tell it that I will choose the driver to install, and I pick a SoundBlaster one, the Multimedia Audio Controller goes away (although there is still no sound) even though I don't have a SoundBlaster card.
I really don't want to reformat my system again unless its really necessary.

I recently reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 4550. I have all the necessary CDs and put in the Dell Resource CD. It has a few drivers but none of them seem to fix the problem I'm having with "other devices" in "device manager." Under other devices, there are yellow question marks next to "Ethernet Controller" and "SM Bus Controller." I've gone to the Dell Web site to try to download drivers but I'm lost and not sure where to turn. The device status for both says: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Device.

Hi guys,

I have a slight problem with one of the PC's..

I reinstalled Windows and everything seems okay except for Two problems..

There is a yellow question mark next to my Ethernet Controller and SM Bus Controller in Device Manager.

I'm not exactly sure how I find out what Ethernet Controller or SM Bus Controller I use to go and download the drivers.

Here are my computer specs:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6750 Dual Core Processor(2.66GHz,4MB Cache,1333MHz)

PCI-Express Mainboard - Pentium® D/Core™ 2 Duo - Micro ATX
2GB DDR2 667MHz Memory - (2x 1GB)

Sapphire HD 2900 Pro

Xp Pro

Assuming you are using the ethernet port on the motherboard (not a separate card) you need to get the manufacturer and model number from the mb itself and go to their site to get the drivers for that and the SM bus controller. You don't mention the brand/model of the mb in your post - Micro ATX is a size specification, not mfr.

The ethernet contoller is made by 3Com(3C940 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Codec) audio controller is made by Intel - AC'97 Audio controllersubsystem id is(SoundMax Integrated digital audio) I'd been searching the web for days, I could not find these drivers that I need. I lost the box and the manuals for this mobo. I also enabled these devices in Bios setup -- Can someone please help me with this dilemma.

I have an HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop and I am unable to use my question mark key. I also cannot get capital letters for some keys notably the letters "z, x,c,v, m etc"
Is it a keyboard choice issue or something I have to turn off
Can someone tell me how to resolve this issue.
Thanks

Try the recommendations here: http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/keyboard-does-not-work-correctly/169913.html

They mention testing to make sure no keys are stuck and testing another keyboard. If another keyboard works on your laptop Id guess the key contacts on the built in keyboard are acting up.

Hi -------- I have the above against my " Multimedia Audio Controller " in device manager. My speakers and michrophone do not work on my p.c. and this may be the problem. It does not even recognise that I have speakers and mich. attached as they are greyed out in the " sounds and audio device properties " pop up. Also I have a tft monitor with grills for inbuilt speakers ( well I take it they are for that ) and do not get any sound out of my monitor.I feel they are related.

I downloaded a utility called " unknown device identifier 5.02 and this gave me the make and model no. of the audio card it is " sis7012 audio driver " and then proceeded to download the appropriate driver and tried to install. It failed with an error message of a red cross and 536870397 number is displayed.

I installed a satellite card a while back and wonder if there is a conflict of some sort with this.
Have you any ideas on how to get my speakers and michrophone working ?

Just thinking out loud -- why can't I just delete the Multimedia Audio Controller ( the 1 with the yellow question mark ) . It is listed under " other devices " in device manager and I have an entry further down in the device manager called " sound video and game controllers " this then has all the usual listings such as " audio drivers " and " media control devices " etc. doesen't this section contain all the relevant entries to enable my spea... Whats happened here, sounds like you computer thinks you have a different language key board.

I cant remember where exactly the setting is, but it should be under control panel -> keyboard or control panel -> regonial and language options

hope that fixes it for you

Hello

VISTA home premium 64 bit
service pack 1
AMD Phenom x4 9750 quad core processor

ATI Radeon HD 3650

Whenever I try to view movie trailer clips from this one website the video seems to
take a long time to load up...and in the end I just get a quicktime picture with this
question mark in the middle

In the past I was always able to watch these video clips without any problems...I've
also noticed that my sidebar weather gadget, in VISTA, has also frozen on one
temperature and will not change...this happened around the same time I noticed that
I was getting the quicktime question mark

I have tried updating quicktime...it doesn't help

Hello,

I have an ethernet cable run in my house. What I need to figure out is if there is such thing an ethernet switch that does not require a power source. (or something that can get this situation resolved)

Here is my situation:
I have a cable ran to my basement, and have a bedroom directly above the basement that needs an ethernet run. It is not possible for me to run a completely new cable from the original starting point, so I was somehow hoping to use the cable going to the basement, put a head on it, put it into a switch/hub/splitter and run a cable out of it to the room directly above, and use the other cable coming out to stay in the basement.

Is there something that can do this for me? Is there a better way to do so? What would you suggest? Thanks!

UPDATE: Please refer to post #4 for more details.

I'm trying to fix a Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop. In the device manager there is a yellow question mark next to "other devices" and everthing listed under other devices has the question mark. The error code has flashed as a 1 or 2 and they are listed as not installed. I can't connect to the internet and I am using another computer. Can anyone give me a procedure and link to appropriate web sites for driver downloads?

Hello :

When I press the shift and question mark in Gmail I get an E with an acute accent mark, instead of a question mark. In my notepad and wordperfect programs, the problem does not occur : pressing shift and the question mark at the same time get me the usual question mark..

Could someone tell me how to regain the question mark in my gmail?

Thank you,
Robert

A:Solved: Eacute instead of question mark

I found a resolution when I saw a google site that indicated a solution I had previously tried unsuccessfully : holding down the shift and control keys at the same time : it required one to hold down the control and shift keys. However, in my case anyway, I could only get it to work by holding them down for about 11 seconds!

So, the solution is to hold down the shift and control key simultaneously for an extended length of time. And in my case it was very extended!

The problem has nothing to do with having installed the wrong keyboard, which is what many would have one think.

For some reason the problem and the solution apply only when using Gmail. Notepad and other programs seem to work normally (as long as you have the proper keyboard installed).

Don't know how and when, but all of a sudden I've seen all my outgoing emails in text format have a '?' at the beginning of the msg. E.g. "?Hello,...".
Obviously when I compose the msg there is no question mark.
This happens only if I use text format and with all codepages except UTF-8.

I've never installed external email clients and I've always been using Windows Mail and now Windows Live Mail 2011. IE7 then IE8 and now IE9beta. I don't use 3rd party firewalls/antivirus/anti-malware etc.

On the web it's impossible to find a solution and that's the best I've seen: Unwanted Question Mark In Message Body | TheDailyReviewer

Please, can someone help me?

A:Question mark '?' in outgoing emails

If you are running an ANSI program, if it doesn't understand a character, it sticks a '?' in place of it. If UTF-8 works I'd stick with that. I've only used English versions of Windows but from programming I know it's a can of worms when you start getting into code pages, unicode and all that jazz. Not everything understands non-ANSI char set. I'd try another mail program.

not sure where to post this as it applies to all windows versions... why can't you have a question mark in the file names of files in Windows??? many pictures and songs I make is about a question and I HATE having to replace the question mark with an underscore!!! why aren't question marks allowed in file names???

A:Why can't you have a question mark (?) in file names???

Because it's a reserved character.http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa365247(v=vs.85).aspxUse any character in the current code page for a name, including Unicode characters and characters in the extended character set (128–255), except for the following:The following reserved characters:< (less than)> (greater than): (colon)" (double quote)/ (forward slash)\ (backslash)| (vertical bar or pipe)? Hello all ! Got a small glitch which I am hoping you can help me out with. I just reinstalled windows xp on a Dell Latitude D610 and did all the Microsoft updates to service pack 3 and about 72 other Microsoft updates. Also went to the Dell drivers update website and scanned my machine thru there for drivers and downloaded and installed their recommendations. Now when I go to "device manager", in other devices it lists 2 unknowns, Network controller and PCI simple communications controller. Two big question marks with a"!" in the middle. I uninstalled and tried reinstalling them, but it says it cannot find the file on those two. Laptop still works very good, but I am wondering if I need those 2 devices and if I do, where do I get them. Thanks in advance.

A:Other devices yellow question mark.

The PCI Simple Communcations device is probably the dial-up modem...I would just disable the modem in the BIOS, unless I was on dialup.http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd610/en/ug_en/drivers.htm#wp1052327Driver Support WebpageYou need to pick the correct applicable driver for networking...and install same. Look at your system documentation to see which is applicable to the system you have.Louis
