Everquest 2 Freezing for a few seconds and then jolting back to normal, off and on

Q: Everquest 2 Freezing for a few seconds and then jolting back to normal, off and on

For some reason, my computer:

Compaq Presario S6900NX
AMD Athalon 64 3200
160 GB 7200 RPM Ultra DMA Hard Drive
1 GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory
GeForce FX 5500 256 MB RAM

which ran EQ2 just fine for a couple years, has started freezing up for about 5 seconds every 5-10 minutes and then it jolts back into the game as if nothing happened. I have no idea why.

The other symtom is that the sound will continue to play while the screen freezes, and then right before it jolts back into the game, the music skips really fast like a skipping CD, and then it's all normal after it jolts back.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, I have done everything, virus, adware, and spyware scans. Ran Atf cleaner and some others, everything is ok on that end.

But this has been going on for weeks now. Seems to be maybe graphic related, its not so much programs on my computer. Its the internet, when I open up Firefox, it will freeze, load websites, it will freeze. Lasts for about 10 seconds and then it is fine. I noticed when someone IMed me on Yahoo it did it as well. Is there any way that I can diagnose this to see whats going on?

This just started happening last Sunday. Last sunday my computer got attacked with some kind of virus im sure because my entire computer was being affected and I couldn't do anything on it. Well i got Avast, lavasoft's adaware and ran those (and got rid of mcaffee) and that made it so i could use my comp again. I could play everquest and all that jazz. however, on wednesday it started acting up again and freezing while playing EQ. Now today my computer freezes whenever I even try to log onto a character (cant move mouse, no keyboard commands) and i have to manually turn off the computer. It was giving me a 100000d1 error and i researched that and downloaded and registered for regcure, which i ran. It improved my systems performance but I'm still freezing when i log onto EQ. I cleaned the fan and some other areas by blowing real hard lol(havnt got a can of compressed air ATM), left it running without the side on and no improvements. I tried defragging and checking for errors on the C drive and it would not let me saying "could not start defragmentor" but it starts perfectly fine on drive D. I tried doing a memtest but my comp doesn't have a floppy drive for me to insert a floppy into to download the program. Also tried doing a chkdsk /r /f command to check for errors but i never saw any info when i rebooted the computer.

Anything I can do?? or does my hardrive need to be replaced? Nothing new has been added to the comp recently and have had the ... Read more

Alright here's my problems. I can play the game everquest (EQ) for about 15 minutes before the computer just freezes. Obviously no mouse control and no keyboard commands work.
EQ is an online game of course. I have no idea why this only happens in EQ though. I can play Ghost recon for hours without a problem. But when it comes to EQ thats a different story.
I have Windows XP Pro and ATnT wireless Broadband. The internet speed is amazing! And EQ will run great until it freezes.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this either post here or email me at [email protected]

A:Everquest Freezing problem

I am having the same problem but I am fairly sure what the problem is but I do not know how to fix it.

I spent the most part of the day troubleshooting why EQ was freezing and among my findings on the EQ Tech Support FAQ it advised me that the sound device and video device should not be running on the same IRQ setting.

Well, I looked in my device manager and low and behold they are sharing the same IRQ setting, IRQ 11. But it is also being shared by my Ethernet Card. The EQ tech support site advised I get help on switching my PC's IRQ but I have no idea where to start. Whenever I tried to change the settings manually in the device manager a message popped up saying that IRQs cannot be changed, could someone please help me?

Here is a link to the EQ tech support site:

I am having increased problems playing everquest..The screen will freeze for about 15 seconds then return to game play..Let me list what i have and what i have done to attempt a remedy:

Compaq Presario 1.7 5330us , 512 ram , radeon 9700pro ( had nvidia gforce400 prior and did the same with the new ui).Winxp home edition, Sound card is disabled atm via bios.Have dsl on a router with 2 other comps.Directx 8.1 as well.

Talked to the folks at sony via internet and he had me goto msconfig and turn off everything but systray and another that i cant remember. I then downloaded all the current video / sound drivers that i could find and installed them.Downloaded all the system updates from compaq/hp ( syspack? )..Tried a fix website to enhance the performance of the comp as well..Disabled different stuff..

Problem is still there though..I can fully boot in to eq..Run around for a bit then i lag hardcore for about 3 secs prior to the lockup..Searched for viruses and none were detected..Speaking of viruses i dont have any protection running at all..Nor do i have any anti virus programs period that i know of..not sure if any came with the comp when i bought it but none are shown in the bottom right hand corner on the bar. A user posted about zonealarm and his problems seemed to be exactly alike to mine but i have not down loaded zonealarm or aware of its presence..Is it on my comp some where?

Anyhoo, feed back would be much appreciated..

Good morning folks! I'm really hoping you guys can help me with this. I just bought a new laptop last week from CyberPower. It's got the quad core i7, 16GB ram,6GB video card, solid state drive, solid machine. But right from the start I've been experiencing 1-2 second pauses in all video and even right now while typing, or while scrolling through websites. I've tried 3 different browsers, I've updated flash, run several full system virus scans. This happens in every application, whether it's hulu, facebook, playing a fully downloaded file with media player. I'm completely stumped as to why my brand new, high powered system is performing so badly....PLEASE HELP!

For a few days now my Dell Inspiron has been lagging/freezing every few minutes for a couple of seconds.

It seems to be happening no matter what i'm doing on the laptop - playing music, playing a game and even when it's idle. The whole system freezes and if there is audio playing it makes a strange buzzing noise. Any video playing freezes and the mouse freezes too. It is only for 2 seconds at most and isn't effecting the running of the laptop, it's more of an annoyance.

I've run a full scan with Avast! and Malware Bytes. Malware came up clean, Avast! found a few low level things that have been deleted or moved to the chest/vault.

I've also run ChkDsk, which found a few errors and, i'm assuming, fixed them. I left it running over night as it took a few hours to complete.

Any help or advice is hugely appreciated!!

I have my desktop computer with Win7 HP 32 with 3Gb RAM set to sleep after 4 hours of inactivity. When I wake it up it always takes 90 seconds of heavy CPU usage before it is usable for all practical purposes. The usage always involves one of the svchost.exe. files. The amount of time doesn't vary, no change over the past 2 years.
I was just wondering if it's common. Does everyones windows 7 desktop system do this?

A:90 seconds to wake up. Is that normal.

All of my Windows systems have done this, since XP. I never use sleep because a boot only takes 20 seconds.

Curious to see what others have experienced though

For a few days now, I have noticed that my laptop hangs for about 5-10 seconds at a time. If any audio/video was playing, that freezes; the cursor freezes, etc. This happens multiple times in an hour.
At the time of the freeze, I haven't been playing games, playing large video/audio files, etc.- just regular browsing and some Word files for homework.
I have updated all my drivers- including the display driver- and checked the Event Viewer for errors. For some of the occurences, it tells me the display driver crashed; for most of them it says nothing. (Seeing as I updated my display driver, I'm not sure why this is happening.) It's a problem that I could technically just ignore and deal with, seeing as it unfreezes in a few seconds, but the underlying cause might be bigger than that and I'd like to know what's going on.
Feel free to ask me for more information; I will provide is as best as I can.
EDIT: Just happened again and I got a notification in the action center: "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered." The screen had gone black for a second and reappeared.

I have been having this problem for a long time and it is driving me nuts. Whenever I play any audio, itunes, youtube, etc. I get this strange glitches, noises, kind of jumps? If it was on just this one pc would be one thing but has been on the last three pc's I have had. Could there be something in my itunes causing this as the first time I noticed it I was playing a song there with the visualizer on. Any ideas?

A:strange jolting noises when playing audio

None what so ever. There is nothing in common as you stated it is with several apps and several computers.

It would have to be something in common between all of the PC's and apps or it's not the same problem.

A:Freezing of game "Everquest" while playing.

What are the game specs? In other words what procc. speed does it call for ect.? It sounds like you have enough ram but do you have a lot of things running in your system tray?
In most cases of freeze up its a ram problem. As well have you checked the games web site for patches or updates?

Truly had a hard time trying to describe a proper title.
Here's what I mean. Since I got this computer 3 years ago and along it Windows 7 I had this problem and questioned if it was a normal Win7 thing or not.
I turn on the PC and, for ex., I go online. This means I am presently working on my C: drive since that is where my OS sits and along it my Browser. But at one point, say 15 minutes later I want to open a file/folder which happens to be on a different drive, D:, E: whatever. Well at this point I hear coming from my computer, sitting below me, the drive begin to spin-and I need to wait from 5 to 10 seconds before I see anything on the screen--Windows Explorer. Is this normal or what? If not, what is going on exactly.
At this point, afterwards the folder siting on the drive takes no time to open, or a new folder or whatever but if I wait a while, say 30 minutes and then decide to open another folder sitting on another drive the same thing happens

A:Folder on unused drive takes 5 to 10 seconds to open, is this normal?

Hello pintree,

Yes, this is normal when you have Windows set to Turn off hard disk after X amount of idle minutes instead of "Never". If you like, the tutorial below can helps how you how to set this to "Never" to no longer have your hard drives turn off.

I was here earlier with a problem I was having with my laptop all of a sudden randomly "preparing Windows to standby". Now that is not the problem

I have an Inspiron 1520-Windows XP 4G of ram. Laptop is about 6 yrs old and has worked perfect until about a week ago which it first started with the "windows preparing to standby". I have to add that in my power options I have the option NEVER TO STANDBY. This problem has not occurred again somehow, but it did it for about 3 or 4 days.

Problem now:

On startup my icons take about 3 minutes to load while the background wallpaper shows up in less than a second. If I do the startup in safe mode everything loads as it should. No problem.

Once my laptop is totally loaded on normal mode it works fine even if the icons took forever to load , with the exception that maybe twice a day the screen will go black for less than a second and come back to normal again.

What I have done:

I checked all my startup programs and I only left one on called Syntpenh because I read it has something to do with the mouse and scrolling of pages. (I am not computer savvy at all so this is really difficult for me I have done this while reading other posts and talking to some techs) I have run defrags (it always comes back saying there are some files that cannot be defragmented) , disk check which comes out ok , cleaned and compacted registries (with PC Tool Registry Mechanic which I downloaded after all this fiasco started ... Hi, hope someone can help, for some or other reason my pc keeps freezing every few seconds for a second or two.

My system spec is as follows, i7 960, 24gb ram, geforce gtx 465, corsair h60 cooling, x2 tb hdd, 1000 watt power supply, asus p6t motherboard, wireless network card. Running windows 7 ultimate.

The software i have is Win 7, office 2010, avast anti virus, and a couple of small apps.

I have tested all components and everything is working.

The computer would freeze while i am gaming, watching a movie etc, after a while it goes away for a minute or two but then starts all over again. If i reboot the pc, it sometimes sorts it out for a while but then it will start again.

I have formatted my pc a couple of times hoping it would be fixed, but alas it starts all over again.

Hi I am using XP Pro, and have applied all patches from MS as they are alerted via Windows Update.

My system keeps freezing for 5 seconds at regular intervals, in many of my XP sessions. It doesn't happen in every session, but when it does, it keeps happening every few minutes, always for 5 seconds, and then resumes to normal.

Watching the task manager doesn't help, because when it freezes, it doesn't show which task has jumped to 100%. Even the caps lock doesn't respond. After the freeze, things go back to normal.

I have tried closing every applicaiton and end tasking nearly every process, but it still happens, which leads me to believe it is an OS problem, not an application problem.

Any clues? My hardware is fine, because I have run heaps of other OSs on the same box for several years. Machine is Gigabyte BX mainboard with P3 700/100 processor and 384MB of RAM, and 60GB Quantum Fireballl disk.

My computer recently started freezing for 3-5 seconds at random times. For example, while i am typing this it is happening.

It will also freeze more frequently when I am playing games for the same amount of time. It never fully freezes, only for a short period of time.

I recently restored my computer with the restore disc thinking it could be a virus, but it still freezes even after all of that. Could this possibly be cause by a part inside of the computer being loose? I travel often and this computer could have easily been dropped by someone or banged against something.

I dont know if this means anything, but while it freezes i can still move the mouse cursor around, but everything else stops and i cant click anything.

Hope this is enough informaion

Hi Everyone,
One of my brothers friends gave him a computer that he could have, but it wasn't working properly. My brother asked me to reformat it completely since it was probably filled with viruses and junk (his friend had limewire on it...) Anyhoo the computer wouldn't boot at all, the first time it did the countdown to start windows normally, in safe mode, etc but froze with 20 seconds left. Turned it off and back on and only get a black screen, another time and I would get the countdown thing again but it would freeze before I can do anything. I tried booting from a disk, and it froze at that too.
I unplugged the HD, and put it as a slave drive on a working PC, and the drive shows up and I can access it fine. I set it back to a master drive in the working PC, reformatted it, no problem. The drive works perfect in the working computer. I put the HD back into the "broken" computer it belongs to, and now it freezes at a black screen with an underscore blinking in the top left. If I go into BIOS, it still freezes within seconds before I can even do anything. I tried the working HD in this computer and it also freezes before the Windows XP screen even comes up.
So I don't think it's a hard drive problem. It was a custom built PC a long time ago. Nothing fancy on it - Windows XP, 512MB Ram, integrated graphics, etc.

Any Ideas what is causing this to freeze up?

Sometimes it will happen every 5-10 seconds, and i reboot and the problem goes away for a little while...compy always freezes up when i am joining a game ( right before i pick which team i want on...). this has been happening for like 4 weeks now..i think some has to do with my ISP ( Time Warner - Roadrunner ), but the freezing i don't see how those could be related... I'll wait to see if someone replies to your post before i post any specs or anything big ...Dell Dimension 4600, on service pack 1 ( should i update to 2? ), 512mb RAM, Windows XP Home, and the standard ,and crappy, video/sound card on the compy...
i seem to be having problem with a trojan though ( as of a couple days ago...). i have run the nortan scan numerous times, AVG ( free scan) twice...probably a few more things i can't think of right now lol....any tips o nthat ? Nortan says it is in the taskmg.exe file ( in windows - system32 folder)...didn't sound like something i should just straight up delete, so i figured i might get some advice

Hi, I have recently just built me own computer, however sometimes when using it, it will be very slow and it will also freeze for about 20 seconds and then work again. Also when you put a disk in to install something it will take about 1 minute to autorun the disk. Does anyone know what could be causing this.
I have had my graphics card replaced, my RAM replaced and my Hard Drive replaced and still no luck, the only things I havnt have replaced are the Motherboard, CPU, PSU and Blu-Ray Drive.

These are my system specs:
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
ASUS P5K Premium Motherboard
BFG GTX280 1GB Graphics Card
OCZ Reaper RAM 8GB 1066
1000w PSU
Intel Q6600 CPU (Manufactured Overclocked)
Samsung Spinpoint F1 Hard Drive 1TB
Pioneer Blu-Ray Disc Drive

A:Computers Freezing for 20 seconds

Perhaps you should go back to basics and start over... no overclocking... 2 GB of RAM. Reset your system. See how it does, then if it works well, start over, keeping notes as you go.

My computer started freezing couple a days ago. After 2-3 hours of work computer starts to freeze for 5 seconds every 5 minutes. Then the intervals between freezing become smaller and smaller. After freezing CPU usage jumps to 100% and after 1 second drops back to 20-30%.
I have 2GB ram, Intel E2180CPU, ASUS EAH3650 graphics card.

Hello everyone,

Its an ibuypower purchase off of New Egg a few months back. The last few days, after the computer has been on for a little while (sometimes as short as ten minutes) it turns off - no shutdown and then turns itself on a few seconds later. I've opened the side panel and made sure all the connections are seated. The fans are running and there is no dust build up (I do air can out dust every few weeks).

Any tips on what I can do would be appreciated.

A:Machine turns off and then back on a few seconds later

- only use the laptop on a hard surface - with nothing blocking any of the vents.
- use a laptop cooling pad if possible
- blow out all vents with canned air (DO NOT use a vacuum cleaner or an air compressor, they can damage the components).
- ensure that the fan comes on and is blowing air out of the vent (may not happen at startup, but should happen after using it for a while).

For monitoring heat of the system, use Speccy or HWMonitor:
-Speccy System Information

Upload a screenshot of your hard disk using CrystalDiskInfo:
-CrystalDiskInfo Standard Edition
-How to Upload and Post a Screenshot and File in Seven Forums

Make a hard drive test from the hard drive manufacturers website:

Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file.

To do this, follow these steps:
-Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
-At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

My laptop HDD (bought last year) recently started to show SMART errors and Western Digital sent me a replacement drive. However, they want the old HDD back.

With the old HDD containing all kinds of private data etc. I would be using something like dban etc but was wondering why WD would take such a risk with client data.

Being WD, who knows if they can retrieve data even from a HDD where dban had run. All we need is one disgruntled employee and all hell would break loose.

Any pointers in discussing with WD about me keeping the old HDD with myself instead of returning it OR should I just dban the HDD and pray for the best when I return the failing HDD to WD?

A:Normal for WD to get old HDD back?

WD needs the old drive back for a variety of reasons, such as they need the cores to make refurbished drives from and the sad fact there are some disreputable individuals who would claim that a drive went bad, even though it didn't, just so they can get a freebie.

As long as you wipe the drive (using DBAN is just one of many ways to properly wipe a drive) before sending it back (formatting or simply erasing will not wipe a drive of data), WD will not be able to recover any of your data. Just make sure you have at least one backup of your data (two would be safer) before you wipe the drive.

My one experience with getting a warranty replacement from WD went very well. I used their cross ship option where they immediately sent me the replacement drive (I got it in two days); I did have to allow WD to put a hold on my credit card for the cost of the drive in case I failed to return the old one within 30 days. After I received the replacement drive, I just used the packaging WD used to send me the replacement drive to ship the old drive back (WD is very particular about how a HDD is packaged when returning one so I took the easy way out). I also paid for the return shipping label through WD to take advantage of their significant volume discount. The hold on my card was lifted the same day they received the old drive back.

When shipping the old drive back and using a UPS label from them, don't just drop it into a drop off box. Take it to UPS or a UPS store so you can get a re... Read more

Well recently (about a week ago), my mouse has just been randomly freezing every 10 seconds - 10 minutes for about 3-5 seconds each freeze. This is really irritating considering that I develop a majority of programs in VB and C#, along with moderating several pretty big websites including my own.

I am not the only user of this computer. My brother and uncle both use this computer, although my brother is the one who tends to download various miscellaneous programs. The only reason he can't be held accountable for anything, though, is simply because he's been out of state for the past week. And all my uncle ever does is watch Naruto.

Nothing major has been downloaded in the last few days, just a few programs from that website I moderate, which I never even ran. I just downloaded them so they could be analyzed for the possibility of containing viruses. They're all run in emulated environments of course, and not actually on my computer. I mean, occasionally I'll run a program in sandboxie, but that's besides the point.

To be more precise about how my mouse freezes:

Randomly, about 30 minutes into running my computer, I'll be switching to a new tab in firefox, or loading a website, or something and my mouse will just freeze for about 5 seconds. Normally if something happened like that, I'd just dismiss it like nothing had happened. The only problem with this is that it's recurring. So once it starts freezing, it keeps going more frequently.
