Preferred Solution: icon display on desktop suddenly change

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I noticed today that the Microsoft Homegroup icon suddenly appeared on my desktop, I opened it up and apparently it thaught I was part of a homegroup, I immediately removed myself from the 'Group' and checked my security settings and disabled anything homegroup related.  My question is, did a Virus do this? I just completed a Norton360 scan and it detected and removed a Heuristic Virus, which after googling I found that it means that it didn't know what the virus was but considered it a threat?

What is the danger that someone has got into and viewed my files?  I also did a Search and Destroy scan and it only found the usual low-grade threats.  Btw the Heuristic find might be completely unrelated to the Homegroup icon appearing on my desktop, I checked the file and it thaught the Suvarium (Game) online update was a Trojan Virus.. go figure?

Thanks!

All,

Can someone please help me figure out how to turn off the icon that suddenly started flashing randomly on the left side of my desktop? It is a box with a speaker with an "X" through it. It flashes vertically up and down the left side of my monitor.

My OS is: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Sound: Confused on this.
Speakers are: VIA High Definition Audio
Sound Card: AMD Catalyst Control
Under this Control Center, says "Audio" Default Audio Device

I was playing a game. Had it on "pause". Went back to it and hit resume with my mouse. Then this flashing mute sound box appeared.

I didn't hit any hot keys that I am aware of and the sound is still functional when I test it.

The Icon in my toolbar does not show "muted" and I have sound.

Did a System Restore. No change. This is extremely annoying.

I'm sure it's probably something simple, but I can't figure it out.

Thank you in advance for your help.

MJ

A:Mute Sound Icon Box suddenly flashing on desktop - can't turn off!

VIA is your regular PC sound. The AMD is ONLY for HDMI audio.

That must be something that a program, most likely the game, caused. Check the game for options.

Weirdest thing, that's happened a couple of times now: When I switched on my computer today (Windows 7 64 bit), some of my desktop icons displayed as thumbnail images, rather than the symbols that are usually displayed.

Usually all of my desktop icons show the symbol of the program that opens that particular file format, like the Foxit symbol for PDF, or VLC symbol for FLV or MP3. The only files that have been consistently showing an thumbnail image rather than a symbol are MP4 files (my previous computer - an XP - didn't do that).

Now some - not all - of my PDF and ODT files are displaying as a thumbnail image of the first page of the document.

The last time this happened I tried changing a setting somewhere to never display thumbnails, but that also affected the way that photos were displayed in my 'Windows Libraries', and that really didn't work for me, so I changed the setting back. A couple of days later the icons went back to normal on their own.

I'd really rather be able to see the symbols on my desktop, than thumbnails, but if I absolutely had to, I could live with it the way it is currently. It makes my maneuvering through the files on my desktop more difficult however, especially since this is not consistent. More importantly though, I'm puzzled by why this is happening, and unexplained changes like this are very disconcerting.

Does anyone have any insight into this, and know how to fix it? Thanx so much.

Hello I am new here and need a little help

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and when I click start then click on my user name all personal files come up however "Desktop" has a standard icon instead of the Vista default icon

I right click on it hit properties but there is no customize tab so I tried to edit the desktop.ini file it is currently:

[.ShellClassInfo]
[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

Nothing still the standard folder icon so I think for some reason it is flagged as a system file when it should be flagged as non-system file

I also tried right clicking the desktop -> personalize hit change desktop icon highlight my user name click restore defaults hit apply then then ok and nothing

I did reboot my PC after making all of the above changes

If I could get it back to the default icon that would be great thanks

I have researched until I am blue in the face and not found out how to do this.

We are getting ready to have house guests, and I have created an account for them to use. I would like to create a desktop shortcut icon which is roughly double the size of the other icons to draw attention to it. The target file will be a basic readme with a couple of short rules for using my computer.

If I cannot find a way to create the single larger icon, I will resort to another idea I have in mind. That idea is to type the rules in Word and use Snipping Tool to capture the text and use the resulting image as a desktop background.

My *desktop program icons* are all messed up. See attachments for my screenshot.

As you can see in the red circle, there appears to be "layers of icons" for each program. Yet when I open a window or go elsewhere, the problem is not there. It happens only in desktop.

Obviously there is no issue with loading the correct icon. The problem is two fold:
- why the "second layer" of that ugly 8 bit .ico image?
- why on my desktop only?

I've been playing a lot with my desktop and icons recently. But I'm not sure what exactly triggered this. For example I am scatterbrained and lately I've been cleaning up my desktop. I had a work project dealing with fireworks and I wanted easier access to that folder. So I gave the folder a custom icon (a fireworks symbol). I did this 10+ times successfuly in the past with no problems for months. Now I did the same exact thing again with the fireworks and I guess I tripped some invisible wire...

Thank you sincerely for any person who wants to take a stab at the root cause of this.

I think what you're asking is how to use a batch script to change the icons on your desktop? I'm not too familiar with using batch scripts for that reason, though it may be possible. You may want to look into VB Script, a more powerful scripting language than batch.Something like this, I think:Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strDesktopFld = objShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")
Set objURLShortcut = objShell.CreateShortcut(strDesktopFld & "\blah.exe")
objURLShortcut.TargetPath = "http://www.blah.com"
objURLShortcut.IconLocation "C:\MyIcons\icon.ico

I am running Windows XP SP3. I have many icons on my desktop with the description underneath in the font & size I chose. I was on the Delphi Glass website and clicked on a You Tube Video. I tried to copy the URL to my desktop. I got the message " Do I want to change my desktop". Wihtout thinking, I clicked yes. Instead of pasting the URL, all the descriptions of my icons were now boxed off with a background color that I determined was what was set in the Display Properties under Appearance, Advanced. I right clicked on the desktop, went to properties, looked at all options, changed many things but could not get rid of the border around the icon descriptions. I tried restoring a back-up of my desktop but that didn't work. I went back to the Delphi Glass site You Tube video and this time when I copied and pasted the url, I had no problems. Hi,
This view size is controlled by HKU specific user registry. Thus it can't be mapping to another user account.
If you insist, there is a complex workaround(However I wouldn't like to recommend you use this method):
Copy the following registry value to place another user's registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
Note: It can't be imported, just copy its value.

My initial thoughts would be to change how the icons are aligned on the desktop.

Right Click on an empty spot on the desktop then select 'Arrange Icons by' and remove the tick (if it is on) from Auto Arrange (and Align to Grid if you want to).

After that you should be able to put the Icon anywhere you like and it should, hopefully, stay in the same spot after reboots etc.

Hi, This is my first post. I recently was given a new Dell 15R touchscreen computer and it was upgraded to Windows 8.1. I've only used Windows XP up until 3 days ago. I am a novice user.

I liked the way the desktop icons looked in XP, the shortcuts for Netflix and Ikea were a nice big red box with an N in it for Netflix, a yellow and blue box for Ikea . They were medium sized, about 1/2" big, but I could recognize them easily and quickly because of the individual graphics.

Now with Windows 8.1, the shortcut icons are a 1/2" white square and a very teeny tiny logo in the center that I can barely see and have confused with other similar icons. I have found where to change the icon size and text size but not the icon appearance. Where would I find this? I have right clicked on the desktop, I've looked in the control panel, I've checked display.

8.1 is a heck of a learning curve for me and I am enjoying learning the new system but I would like to be able to quickly and easily see what I put on my desktop.

Thank you for any and all help. I appreciate it.

I know that there have been many people running XP who actually wanted to get rid of the background colour for their desktop icon label text, so it was transparent. Vista should keep those people happy on that score, though no doubt troubling them with other annoyances! However, because I myself prefer to have an image (changed about every 3 days) as my desktop background, a solid colour background to icon label text is essential for readability. The Vista default of having dark shading around white lettering does make those captions readable against all backgrounds, BUT they look ugly to me and against some pale backgrounds they are still quite difficult to read.

I've spent some time on Google searches for means to restore the user-chosen solid colour background for the icon labels as I had it in XP, and it rather looks as though in Vista there may not be a means to make such a change, at least in any usefully permanent way. My search did lead me to a little utility called D-Color, which actually does just what I want, and I was able to have my icon labels once again with white text on a 'teal' background, which was just what I wanted - except (yes, there always seems to be an 'except' in one's seeking to tame Vista!) that the colour setting isn't permanent and is wiped out with any screen refresh or restart. I have a friend who is elderly and has problems seeing. I went into the display settings on his XP Home Edition and was able to change the font and the font size on the icon captions for his desktop. BUT I CANNOT FIND HOW TO CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE CAPTIONS! I find that the menu for changing sizes and fonts for the various display items very confusing! If someone could tell me precisely how I can change the color from white to black I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!
