I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

If you have a Vista installation disk you can boot to the cd drive and use the recovery tools on the disk. If not you can download a Vista recovery disk here.

I turned on my Lenovo desktop and the 'missing operating system' message
appeared. I have had no previous problems. What can I do?

A:missing operating system (vista)

It normally indicates your HDD is caput. You could look in the BIOS to see if the HDD is recognised.
If you are out of warranty you could open the PC case and clean out any dust and then remove and replace the HDD.
If that doesn't work it is likely you'll be up for a new HDD and reinstall of OS and applications - hope you have your data backed up.
Sorry I can't be more positive..
You could try Lenovo support.

Are you able to boot to safe mode by pressing f8 during the boot process?
A system restore may be able to do the trick, else a windows repair maybe.

Hi anyone that can help me

I have had my comp for a few years now an never had this silly problem till now!
I switch on comp and I get the option of pressing f2 or f8 and when I press them I don't understand what to do next....I am not too well advanced in computers! My machine is a Packard bell with intel pent 4, on windows vista (home premium) I think.

I can't afford to buy any fancy software etc so I just need to know my best option. The only thing that I have is a recovery disc 1 that I downloaded when I bought the comp I don't recall any other discs.

I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks for reading.

Purchased my HP media center PC 11/26/06 with XP installed and a free upgrade to Vista. Upgraded to Vista in April with no problems. I purchased an Ipod in July and while installing Itunes, the system crashed with a blue screen that ended up with something like "memory dump." Had to physically turn off computer and when turned back on had a message "missing operating system." Called HP and Itunes and ended up having to restore computer. Have had this happen on two more occasions. This blue screen comes on frequently while working in Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. Recently upgraded to 6.0 and have had no blue screens. Last night computer was acting fine and I turned it off. Today when I turn it on I receive the "missing operating system" messsage on a black screen. I am tired of restoring this computer and reinstalling all my software and backups. Any ideas on solutions to my problems? Is there a way to get around having to do a restore and then reload Vista, etc?

The computer has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core processor 5000+, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE graphics card; 21048 mb of memory, and a 320GB hard drive.

Hi, i'm new to here. I just got to know that techsupportforum.com is helpful from Yahoo. So i hope someone here can solve my problem.

I just got a new computer from Dell C521 yesterday. Then, i on the computer and trying to install new applications from CD to C drive provided by Dell (eg.: Microsoft Works) and other mp3 songs from my own cd to my E Drive. C drive is for OS, and D drive is Dell recovery drive. However, everytime i tried to install new softwares or copy mp3s to my computer, after that i restart or reboot my computer, a black screen with an error message occur saying that "Missing Operating System".... So i reformat again the OS with the CD came from Dell. Then doing the same things.... and restart it. Same issue happen. What is the problem out there?

However, if i do nothing on my new computer (no install any softwares or copying files to my pc) my computer can reboot or run properly.

Well, i already contact local Dell supported team. They say will update me. So i hope can get their response soon. But i cant wait for them.

I have the same problem similar to the website below. In the mean time i already tried out these solution from Dell community website:

But it doesnt work for me. So can someone tell me the solution? My hard disk got no problem.

A:Missing Operating System - Windows Vista

dell stated that all computers that come with vista would come with the vista disk and instead of reformatting on the bottom left of the install screen
is the repair option
if the computer has sata h/drive after reformatting you probably need to load a driver with f6
the inicial install goes to ram and when it reboots it goes to load the h/drive
if it needs a driver loaded it will stop dead because it cannot find the h/drive

Hey all! I am pretty new to this kind of Win7 issues, so I hope some of you will be able to help. Story goes...

After few hours of gaming the computer died. (It happened right after switching keyboards.) Now, on every setup BIOS(?) comes up with list of options (F2 enter BIOS, F11 boot options, F6 Flash etc.). After that a black screen with error message comes up: Missing Operating System.

I tried rebooting from USB (since I have no disk-drive) and I keep on getting the answer: Error Loading Operating System.

Any ideas?

A:Missing Operating System/Error Loading Operating System

All unlikely, but possible - (a) your HDD died. (b) your bios became corrupted (c) your HDD boot sector became corrupted (d) your HDD partition is corrupted.

Does the drive spin up when you switch on (feel it)?
Check the bios to see if the HDD is reported correctly and is at the top of the boot order.
Find a bootable CD - an OS installer, or create Easeus partition manager bootable CD http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm and boot from it. What does the HDD look like with Easueus?

Hi, I think this problem was caused by a forced shutdown ( I left it with a auto shutdown program, and when i come back to turn it on, i get this!) ( The shutdown program has never caused this problem before though )

So this is the choice page:

I've tried both and neither work, they cant get past the load bar.
I have put the disc in ( Windows x64 Business ) and attempted a repair, which didnt work. I attempted a system restore to a few days ago and still the same problem.

I do however get these two screens which pop up for a split second before the above screen, my camera managed to capture them!

This one first:
Then this:

I havent changed or installed any new programs or drivers.
Im running a 2.4ghz quad, 2gb of OCZ ram, geforce 260 GPU, and the OS is installed on a new HD

It was all running wonderfully, and now nothing

Please please help!

Ran Ccleaner last night on windows 7 64 and everything was fine. Then this morning when the computer re-started, it says missing operating system and windows will not start or read any discs. checked to make sure CD was 1st in the boot menu. And I am currently running diagnostics on my hard drive. So far everything is passing.

A:Missing Operating System?

When you used CCleaner, did you use the registry cleaner portion of the app?

If your drive passes diagnostics, I would try to do a System Restore to a time prior to using CCleaner--which I think you can access from a Windows install disc, if you cannot boot at all.

Can anyone help me with a real problem i've encountered with an old p.c

I had to reinstall windows XP home edition on a friends p.c that had completely frozen up.
This was sucessful and i loaded all the security gear back on, did all the p.c maintenance (defrag etc). I found that there was no sound on windows media player. Having acertained through the troubleshooter that the drivers were working properly, a friend said i should check the bios and see if the sound card was still switched on.

Having necer done anything like this before he said i should press delete on boot up and that would take me to the bios screen. This i did, i found that the soundcard was switched on so tried to exit but had to press N in the save changes box to escape.

Since that i have not been able to boot the system up. It flashes the p.c info (american trends etc) then i get a black screen sayin "Missing operating system" when this appears the hard drive light goes out and the only way i can get out of it is to press Ctl-alt-del or switch the tower off which restarts on its own and tries to boot up again.

I have been back into this bios page to see if there was a restore defaults button but there are only F buttons for optimum settings etc.

this appears to be a non standard build p.c all i can tell you is that it was built in 2001, has a AMD athelon 2.0 processor, 256mb ram and 60Gb hard drive also has 350amp P/S

Any help or clues as what to do next would be most welcome

A:Missing Operating System

Welcome to TSF

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

* The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard disk.
* The hard disk is damaged.
* Sector 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).

Note Some third-party programs or disk corruption can damage an MBR.
* An incompatible partition is marked as Active.

What did you do to the computer before this happened. Please tell everything so we may assist you better

i tried to turn on my computer and missing operating system wont let me what does this mean ?? i have a newer computer and am running vista....how did this happen thanksss

A:missing operating system

Welcome to TSF

The "Missing Operating System" (white "DOS" text on black screen, top
left) is usually from BIOS when it can't find anything to boot.

Can be due to:
- HD is defective or corrupted
- HD is not selected as a boot device
- a non-bootable disk is found before the HD in the boot order

Try this:
- insert your Vista DVD
- allow the "press a key to boot DVD" prompt to go by
- does Vista boot?

If Vista boots this way, then it's most likely the HD isn't in the
boot order, or there may be something wrong with the Master Boot
Record (MBR) code.

Is the system still under warranty? Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility. Or there may be diagnostic utility already on a partition on the drive. Press F12 to see if there is a utility to use.

My brother wants me to fix this laptop that he got from someone awhile ago. I have no idea what the history of it is or what the issue is, but I know that when I start it up, it says the OS is missing. I put in an XP disc to try to reformat it and reinstall XP, but after loading everything up, when it says it's loading XP to go to the screen where you can reformat or repair Windows and stuff, it just goes to a BSOD saying something about partmgr.sys.

I was wondering what the issue is here and if it's possible for me to reformat this drive and use it again or if I would need to buy a new one.

I am in need of help again. While I can usually troubleshoot almost any problem, there have been a few that have thrown me for a loop, and this is one of them.

Yesterday Microsoft released a number of updates for Windows Vista. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Only 3 of the updates installed, although I couldn't tell you which ones. The system prompted me to restart and upon restart I get "missing operating system". I can't get to the boot selection screen to even try safe mode. I tried booting off of the DVD and doing a repair, only to find that my hard drive can't be found, or at least not the Windows installation on it. It's a SATA drive and the drive letter is able to be found when I tell it to look for drivers, although it says the file format is wrong. Microsoft tried to tell me it could be a bad hard drive. Yeah, could be, but it happened at the exact moment I restarted after installing their update. My thought is that it's a corrupted boot sector or boot loader. Any ideas, possible fixes?

Hi all,

I got a blue screen error message saying "memory dump". Now when I start my computer it says "missing operating system".
1. I tried to reinstall Windows 7/64 bit with my installation disk. Didn't work.
2. Tried to use a system restore disk that I made when the computer was new. Didn't work.
3.Tried to boot up from an old HD with windows on it. No luck
4. Tried to boot up in the safe mode. Got the same error message.

What more can I do to recover my missing operating system?
How does a computer "lose" an operating system?

Thanks for your help,

A:Missing OPERATING system

That sounds like either hard drive corruption or end of hard drive. Can you boot to safe mode? Or better yet "Repair My Computer". From there you can run "chkdsk /r" from cmd prompt which is available but make sure it points to "c" drive first.
To help more we need to know make and model of laptop or desktop.

A:Missing Operating System

If you have data that is valuable, don't do anything hasty.

There is a chance that the HDD is faulty, which means that your data may not be recoverable, but in hope that it is, I would recommend removing the HDD and connecting it as a slave drive to another PC running XP (or 2000) using an adapter. Then trying to recover the data.

Anything you do with the HDD in the laptop is high risk to your data.

As any HDD is one of the most failure prone devices in a PC, having valuable data that is not backed up is never a good idea, under any circumstances.

This is my first post on the forum so excuse me if i make any mistakes

Last night, i let my PC on to run a disk defragment and when i woke up i realized that it was crashed, my monitor was on but i couldn't see anything on the screen so i restarted the PC.

Then i got the error Missing Operating System.
I accessed the BIOS and i noticed that the Primary IDE Master/Slave were not detected.
Then i inserted the Windows 7 disk to perform a repair and it didn't detect any operating systems. I clicked on Load Drivers but i couldn't access any of the drivers and it asked me to perform a format.

I've also attached some pictures of the screen to help you understand the problem.

Any help appreciated.

A:Missing Operating System

Welcome vpro

It looks like disk defrag may have wiped your bootable OS. It looks like your bios only shows you have 2 SATA HD connected to the MB. If you do not have any IDE HDs, that is why Primary Master/Slave were not detected. Normally the Bootable SATA HD should be on the first SATA connection on the MB. Your 5th pic, in the background says (4) Hard Disk Drives ? Could you please give a few more details of your hardware specs ? How much data & programs were on your Boot HD ?

I have had a long 16 hour work day, already so I don't want to advise you what do do yet without more info & hopefully some more of our Guru members will see your thread also.

My Drive is all 1 partition by the way, laziness stopped me from getting around to changing that.

Has anyone else been in this situaion and got it sorted out???

Sadly, the only way to fix this is though a installation disk or a recovery disk. Also, some manufactures sell a recovery disk for ~25 USD. this does depend on the manufacturer of your PC (dell, HP, and the like)

Also, is this a duel-boot, or just two PCs (under your name it lists XP and Vista)

The previous OS was Windows 8, no recovery disk was supplied with the computer.
I entered the BIOS menu to change the boot order from the HDD to the USB.
Before I changed the boot order, I changed the Boot Mode from UEFI to Legacy.
(I was following instructions on the internet and mistook this as the boot order.)
I didn't change this back before I continued and can't remember if the default setting was Legacy or UEFI.
I booted from the live USB and continued to try and install the ISO of Linux onto my HDD.
The install encountered an error and took me to a shell.
I exited the shell and rebooted without the USB.
I now receive the following error message
"No boot device available
SATA 0: Installed
SATA 1: Installed
Strike the F1 key to retry boot, F2 to run the setup utility"
The above error message is repeated on reboot.
F2 takes me back to the BIOS menu.
I have run the Dell pre-boot diagnostics and all tests were passed.
From my internet searches I understand that I may have corrupted the boot loader that was on the HDD.

I would greatly appreciate any help, guidance or advice on the above issue.

1. welcome to Tech Support Guy
2. Sorry you have waited a few days for a reply
3. If the computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed then it is most certainly a UEFI boot mode and windows 8 or now 8.1, I presume would be installed on the hard drive in GPT format
4. The boot configuration data for windows would actually involve the booting from a partition titled windows boot manager, this would then hand control to to Windows to complete the of windows
5. It is more or less impossible to decide what you have done, as there is no way of knowing where you installed or attempted to install the Linux based system
6. Your first approach if you have not already done so is to return the boot mode to UEFI in the firmware. Save changes and exit
Shut down
Now when you power on select the boot menu and ascertain if you have an option of windows boot manager
7. The no boot device available is because either - you have attempted to install Linux by selecting the wrong partition or space in which to install it
OR due to the legacy mode when the firmware is looking for the wrong boot loader
OR indeed you have formatted the partition from which windows 8.1 would boot.
8. If the resetting of the firmware to UEFI mode does not achieve anything then you are going no further until you have either the Windows 8.1 installation media for your version - eg 8.1 Professional or Home, the bit version 32 or 64 and the language
You make that from here

What make/model is the PC?

Looks like there is a possible problem with the hard drive.

Boot into the BIOS (System Setup menu) and check to see if the hard drive is detected properly.

swabbye7 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about missing operating system and wanted to help -- but need more information. If you can, please follow the directions in this link to find the detailed product number of your PC: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0001If that is not possible, then look for a sticker on the PC that includes the product number and post that here.  If the battery is removable, the sticker is likely to be in the battery compartment. Also, need to know what Windows version your PC is running. We need that information because troubleshooting steps are different for the various Windows OSs.IF it's running Win10, did it come with that preinstalled?  If not, what was the prior OS of the machine and how long ago did you do the Win10 Upgrade?  And, was your machine OK after the Upgrade or were you having problems, and if so, what were those problems? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

Hi all,
I have this message on my laptop. Unfortunately I bought it with Widows 7 instaled and no cd or dvd was given to me. I was told I can burn a cd on my own whih I never did.
So is there anything I can do in that case? Please help me!

A:Missing operating system

If the OS was installed where is it? It does not matter whether or not you can burn a CD, you can even borrow one; you need a key number and that will cost $150 for an upgraded DVD and more for a full version. There may be a key on the computer, take a look
