Q: computer freezes unpredictably, after 1 min or 1 hr

Hi, I'm a newbie and please be gentle. My vista home premium (2007), from dell, has been freezing up recently. Sometimes it does so immediately after I open a program--it seems to happen more often when I'm connecting online via IE or Firefox, but sometimes it works fine for several minutes or even longer before it freezes. When it does this, Task Manager does not work. Usually I can't get anything to respond or react in anyway, so I simply power off and restart.I have used the windows diagnostics (f12 key) when starting: no problems reported. I have used ccleaner multiple times.I have used malware antibytes, with no problems identified.I have gone into 'msconfig' and stopped lots of programs from starting automatically at startup. It seems to be doing better, not happening as often, but I'm still getting the 'freeze up' nearly every time I use the computer.Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.MaryHere's a log file from hijack this:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 3:07:41 PM, on 2/21/2010Platform: Windows Vista SP1 (WinNT 6.00.1905)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18882)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exeC:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exeC:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\DellTPad\Apoint.exeC:\Windows\System32\WLTRAY.EXEC:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exeC:\Windows\System32\hkcmd.exeC:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\bin\sprtcmd.exeC:\Windows\ehome\ehtray.exeC:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exeC:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exeC:\Windows\ehome\ehmsas.exeC:\Program Files\DellTPad\ApMsgFwd.exeC:\Program Files\DellTPad\Apntex.exeC:\Program Files\DellTPad\HidFind.exeC:\Windows\system32\wuauclt.exeC:\Windows\system32\igfxsrvc.exeC:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exeC:\Windows\system32\SearchFilterHost.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Internet Explorer provided by DellR0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! ?u??C - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\yt.dllO1 - Hosts: ::1 localhostO2 - BHO: &Yahoo! I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Thanks in Advance!

A:Computer freezing unpredictably.

I had similar problems with freezing and DHCP errors. Read a post that said to disable Net BIOS, an obsolete network protocol.

Here's more information and directions:

http://www.petri.co.il/disable_netbios_in_w2k_xp_2003.htm

Even if this doesn't solve your problem, it's a good idea to do anyways. Post back if it doesn't and we'll look further.

Problems:
1.) Computer reboots unpredictably:
Sometimes when adding a task or switching tasks.
Sometimes during software set-up & installation programs.
When 4 or 5 windows are open.
High demand on available ram.

2.) Stalls during boot-up at various steps, i.e. bios screen, black screen, Windows screen.
Stalls during shut-off at "WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN" screen.

3.) Programs stall and generate error notices like "Program Needs To Close"

4.) Sometimes the computer stalls while scrolling down a page.
Possible origins of trouble:
1.) Computer was immediately hijacked when I opened an e-mail attachment that was labled as a

I had to unplug and re-start the computer to re-gain control.

2.) Incorrect use of "ComboFix". I neglected to close either a firewall or an anti-malware program before

A:Computer reboots unpredictably.

1) NEVER USE REGISTRY CLEANERS - they cause problems, they don't cure them
2) I didn't see any mention of an anti virus scan
3) Spybot and AdAware are old school. If I were you I'd uninstall them and replace them with either MalwareBytes or SuperAntispyware
4) Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recover Settings and uncheck "automatically restart"
5) If you suspect malware you should post in the Am I Infected forum on this site
6) Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.

About six months ago, we bought a D-Link DNS-320 ShareCentre, installed two 1TB Seagate HDs, and began using it for our fileshare. Access and speed was OK, but not great.

Since about two weeks ago, our access to the fileshare has been intermittently very slow. Files (any size, 1 KB up to megabytes) load after a long hang-time, or don't load at all. The delay is far, far beyond the difference between 10/100/1000 bps connections. Navigating between folders, saving, moving, copying, and deleting files also have this intermittent hanging.

Our network:

Hey there.

Recently I have upgraded to Windows 10.

I am experiencing an issue where sometimes when I plug in my headphones, there will be no audio coming from them even when Im playing music on the computer.

The music always plays fine from the speakers.
The music always plays fine from headphones when I'm using a USB DAC.
The music always played fine in Windows 8.1 before this through headphones..
The music always plays fine in Linux, my dual boot along side Windows 10.

My headphones for sure work as all my other devices and OSes are fine with it.
My hardware is fine as everything work(s/ed) fine for Linux and Windows 8.1.
My computer always recognizes the headphones when I plug them in, but won't always play audio through them.

Restarting the computer does not always fix the issue, but rebooting into Linux then back into Windows 10 always fixes the issue.

I have tried 3 different sets of audio drivers; Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows Generic Drivers for my device (Eurocom M4). The problem persists in all of them.

I have updated my BIOS to a Windows 10 supported one my manufacturer provided. It didn't help.

It isn't malware for sure as this has been happening since the OS was newly installed.

It persists with all headphones, not just one pair.

Anyone have any possible idea how to fix this issue? I've tried everything I could.

This unexpected tab openening keeps occurring at random times, for www.software-updater.com  from Air Software, with documentation in the tab saying the software to download is from Google Chrome.    This is very suspicious to me.  How do I stop this unexpected tab from opening?  Is this something genuine from google chrome?  The tab will not close if I click on the x at the right side of the tab label; I need to use Task Manager to stop Google Chrome.

Something you downloaded and installed recently contained adware....a program or browser add-on.

Use the programs below to find and remove the adware. Use all of them.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.

I have tried a number of search terms here, but don't find this reported anywhere-- so here goes nothing:

The machine: HP Pavillion dv8000 (portable), x86, 512M RAM
OS: WIN XP Pro v.5.1.2600 SP2, build 2600

The issue:

I fire up the machine and go about my business. The system works with my chosen keystroke repeat rate (very high) which correctly works after the machine booted. Fine.

But at SOME point-- and it seems to have something to do with simultaneously having PhotoShop, Firefox, Wordpad and the imagining software from my Fuji digital camera open at the same time as Norton is running a "live update"-- all of a sudden the keystoke repeat rate "sets itself" to "snail's pace." I go to the control panel > keyboard and find that the slider control for the keystoke repeat rate is now all the way over to the left (super slow). I reset it to a fast rate, apply, and the system works normally again.... maybe for weeks, maybe for a few minutes.

I am yet to actually reproduce the conditions that cause this "quirk."

If I reboot the machine while the keystroke repeat rate is "slow" like this, the system comes back up with my "fast" preset.

I doubt this is a "security" issue... but it's certainly ANNOYING, when it happens.

Is there legitimate software that examines such things as keystroke rates, and "makes the determination" that it needs to be reset, in order for the software... Read more

Less than 2 weeks after the end of my 1-year warranty, my Lenovo Yoga 920 crashed. I've used Lenovo products for years and have recommended the Yoga 920 specifically to many of my coworkers, so when I experienced a hard crash (no blue screen, just a stuck image on screen) I assumed it was something Windows/Driver related. For the past two weeks I've been on a journey to try and resolve the issue but haven't had much luck. Below is a history of what I've experienced and what I've tried:Friday, August 2nd - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, when I found it unresponsive. I tried turning it back on and within 1-2 minutes of booting up, it would crash again. Any image on screen would remain on screen (sometimes with visual artifacts, sometimes without) and any music that was playing would be suspended indefinitely until I hard powered off.Booting the machine in Safe Mode would allow me to use the machine for any period of time - the 1-2 minutes before crash was only experienced under normal boot upSaturday-Wednesdays - No issuesWhatever was causing my crashes all Friday (until late in the night) was not causing it for the next several days. I used this time to back up my filesI used this time to verify I was on the latest version of Windows, that my drivers were up to date, and that neither Lenovo Bridge or Lenovo Diagnostics Windows found any errors with the machine.Wednesday, August 6th - Computer was plugged in and on, but not being used, and same as before, i... My new laptop has been freezing periodically and I can't quite pin down why. Some extra info: When the freeze occurs, my mouse cursor disappears and the screen freezes still as-is. The sound loops whatever note it was making when the freeze occurs. Moving the mouse and hitting any keys or key-combinations (such as ctrl-alt-del) does nothing. The only thing I can do is hold the power button to turn it off and then boot it back up without issue. While it freezes randomly, I have found a few occurences where it always freezes, such as when opening Open Broadcast Software Multiplatform, or after 10 seconds of streaming on the non-Multiplatform Open Broadcast Software. The problem started happening in the last few days, about the same time my son came to stay with me for the week, Hmmm. After surfing for 5-10 minutes the browser will cease to load pages and then computer will stop responding. Functionality to many computer programs will cease to work, shut down and restart do not respond and a hard reboot is necessary. For the past few weeks, about 1/2 hour after booting my computer up in the morning, whatever program I'm using at the moment will stop responding. If I continue to try to get it to respond, its screen will dim and I get the message "Not responding". The disk activity light goes on 100%. To a certain extent I can still get to other programs that are already running, but I can't open new ones. Usually, if I just sit and wait, after about 30-60 sec everything will be ok again; other times nothing will happen for several minutes after which I'll get a BSOD with the message "Windows was shut down..." and
Collecting data for crash dump ...
Initializing disk for crash dump ...

Because of this, I've been running Process Explorer. When the problem occurs I can switch to it if it's on the second screen of my dual-screen system. When I do so, almost everything seems normal:
CPU 1.5%
System Commit 3.46 GB
Physical Memory 3.0 GB
I/0 2 kB
Network 400 B
Disk 0 kB
The abnormal indication is that the disk shows 0 kB even though the disk activity indicator is on 100% of the time. The list of processes shows Avast (anti-virus program) and System to have overwhelmingly the largest I/O Read Bytes, but this doesn't seem abnormal.

I use the program WhoCrashed to check dump files. Some time ago I used it to cause a deliberate crash to check that dump files were bei... Read more

Hello,I really need some help! My computer had a virus that made the fake Windows XP antivirus popup appear where they want you to download the bogus antispyware program, and the desktop background changed to blue with a message that read " WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer. Please install an antispyware...." Blah, Blah Blah! And it would act like it was restarting and go to a blue screen, but if I pressed F8 it would go back. So I followed some steps I had read on here from other people, and that part of it is gone. I am now able to change my desktop background. Now the problem is that every time I try to go on to the internet, Google or whatever other search engine I use will come up, but then when you try to go to another site, it just says " Loading, internet browser redirecting." And I get redirected to another site, usally ADT (weird) or another antispyware site which I believe is just part of the virus. Also, the computer will freeze up completely to where I can't do ANYTHING. Even CTRL+ALT+Delete doesn't work. So we end up just unplugging it (I know that is probably REALLY bad!) I downloaded spybot S&D from my other computer and put it on the bad one, and it did find a couple things and I deleted them, but it didn't help. So I got hijackthis from my other computer also and dowloaded it to the messed up one and obtained my log. I had to do this in safe mode and allow networking to even get my computer to keep running, so... Read more

My computer, early in boot-up, freezes up randomly, mostly when firefox is used for more than 5 minutes (sometimes even before firefox shows up), and in some boots, Vista won't even open anything, then later freezes,Theres pretty much a 1/50 of a working boot up, but I've been trying since about 3:00 AM EST (posted this at 1:28 PM EST) today after it eventually froze up from printing from Acrobat Reader, with no luck (and even one boot, didn't even show the Compaq splash screen), previously, on working boots, I've done virus scans with Malware Bytes' Pro, with no results, never (this computer only got a virus once).I'm forced to boot in safe mode for the computer to work, im afraid its some sort of virus thats unknown by Malware Bytes', so im posting a HiJack This log (later, when i try to run normal mode again) with my DxDiag (please note, my brother installed a facemoods.com thing on this computer, since i think its spyware, i deleted all the traces of it i spotted). I'm using a unmodified Presario CQ50 209WM on the lastest version of Vista, which had already had one reinstall after getting hacked while a relative was using it.Please hurry i just rented a 3 Day Elite weapon in Battlefield Play4Free yesterday which set me back over 100 games worth of getting credits for.

A:Computer freezes up randomly, mostly when using firefox, some boots, computer refuses to open up programs

First of all, MalwareBytes is not an anti virus app. Do you have an av installed? If so, have you run a full scan with that? If not, and since you think it's malware related, you should probably post in the Am I Infected forum.

Hey all,

I was unable to get GMER to run the full scan without an error popping up halfway saying that the .exe has stopped working. I tried it twice and lost patience so I will try again later and try to make it work. For now I'm just putting this post up there to at least get something by the end of today hopefully, so I just want to point out first that my GMER log is not included. Sorry about it! If the GMER log is absolutely necessary along with Hijack and DDS logs for you guys to diagnose what is wrong with my computer, do let me know. Also, if you guys could, any advice on how to get GMER working would be appreciated. I was unclear through the instructions if I should uncheck the IAT/EAT box and check the C: drive box (the GMER tool did not warn me about rootkit activity, but I went ahead and unchecked IAT/EAT and checked C: drive anyway, assuming that the drive that is most important to scan would be C: drive).

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

A:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far

Hello dolphin1349 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any problems with viruses or malware at this time. The HijackThis log is clean.

The hdd light should only light while the disk is being read or written to. It is normal for the hdd light to not be on all the time.

Since you say the system "partially" freezes during a memtest, I would like to understand more about that. Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing when it's partially frozen?

Hello,
OK I am having a HUGE problem with me computer. While I'm working on it in regular mode Windows freezes. I can move the mouse around and the keyboard responds, but when I so to my task bar I just get that circle thing that says it's thinking. If I leave it alone for a few mins, then the whole computer stops responding and I have to do a hard shutdown. I have tried to Google this problem many times but I can't find an answer as to what may be causing it. I thought it might be a virus, but when I try to run and virus scanner, the computer stops in the midsts of it. I can work in Safe Mode with no hangups so I think it might be one of my programs that runs in regular mode. Does anyone know what is going on with my computer? Do you think I should try and reset it to factory settings? Any advice would be grateful seeing as how I am going nuts trying to figure out what's wrong. Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

It sounds to me like you have what's called bad sectors on your hard drive. This is physical damage on a hard drive so that when the laptop is trying to access the hard drive it can't see this data due to the damage and crashes.

The only way to be sure is to take the drive out of the machine and run a sector scan using HDTune on the hard drive externally, you could use a boot disk but I'm not familar with the rules, so won't post the name, some forums don't like people using them.

Worst case, your looking at a replacement hard drive. If you need more detailed intructions please PM me.

Whenever I turn my computer on, at different points during startup my computer just freezes. So it has become unusable. What happened was that it used to freeze sometimes while watching a video or playing a game, but this was very rare. But then it progressively got worse and it started freezing more and more during watching videos, and eventually it started freezing even when I wasn't watching a video. And now its gotten far worse, that I can't even use the computer because it freezes during startup. Also, I tried to disable the video card and see if that was the problem but it continued to freeze.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? I know that it can be many things, but I have been told that it's most likely a hard drive issue. But before I go out and buy a new hard drive, I just want to know if that is what the most likely problem could be.

Thanks.

hallo ,my Computer freezes without any reason, it can happen after a few seconds and can happen after two days. it's not giving me any log file or blue screen to see what is the problem. requires reboot only.i have Tested computer memory and 100% work in the Laboratory and everything was stable and without problemI attached the log file from the HIJACKTHIS ,it's may be usefullI'm really frustrated and using the computer with fear .Thank youMod Edit: Removed HJT log, since that is a malware tool and there is no apparent reason to post such here in Win 7 forum. My computer is freezing for almost 30 seconds everytime at the start-up where it says "welcome".

After about 30 seconds, it goes to the desktop screen but all I could see is the backround. It freezes like that for 30 seconds again and finally the desktop icons pop out.

It takes me about 4 ~ 5 minutes just to start my computer.

I thought they're were too much programs at the start-up so I unchecked some programs that would startup at the start-up.

But it still keeps on freezing at the "welcome" screen and after that the desktop backround screen.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

A:Computer Freezes At Welcome.

Well, it could be a number of things not limited to system/program/driver/antivirus conflicts and of course malware.I would suggest posting a HijackThis log in the HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum with a description of your problem.

One of the computers on our domain just recently has had several problems occurring. A couple of weeks ago the monitor was suddenly going black. It would go into what looks like a hibernating mode but I have turned off all of the hibernating options on the PC. I also noticed that whenever the monitor shutdowns that the red processing light also is locked on red like the hard drive is working overtime. Only the monitor goes black as the PC is still on but locked up. I have to unplug the PC to get it to shutdown but it boots up fine every time. The event log is also showing a NetBT error at every reboot which says: "The name "XXXXXXXX :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address xx.x.x.xx. The machine with the IP address xx.x.x.xxx (DNS server) did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine." I'm also getting a browser error that says "The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is XXXXX (DND server)."

I suggest running a disk check. You might have a few damaged sectors on the drive causing the os to freeze. Here is how..1. Click the start button > type cmd into the search box.2. Right click cmd an select Run as Administrator.3. At the command prompt type chkdsk /r c: > press enter.4. Confirm the check at boot by pressing Y > reboot the machine.A detailed log will show in the event viewer once it has completed.

I think this file is related to HP in some way, but research results are inconclusive. I can't find enough information for this file -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\usb.exe
Right click on that file and go to Properties. Then go to the Version tab and see what information you can get from there (Company, Description, etc.) and post it here.

Also Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\usb.exe

Report the results here.

Have you updated and run scans with the tools you have aboard? Ewido and a2 are great tools, and would likely find something. Run each in safe mode, and post results here.

Reboot, and then perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer
Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Click On 'Scan Now'
Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

Just bough a new PC:
Pentium IV 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9600, Win XP Home SP2. The computer works fast and fine with documents and etc.The problems begin when I try to use CD-ROM:
The music CDs play fine, but when I load some software CD (to install drivers, programs and etc.), computer just freezes up and I have to reset. Alt+Ctrl+Del does not work. I can move the mouse pointer, but everything else is dead. I replaced the new CD-ROM drive with my old one, but the same thing keeps happening.
Also, i believe the same thing happens when i play games (Half-Life 2 and Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 to be exact), it works fine for sometime and then freezes and I have to reboot again (though it might fork fine for hours with no problems). There are no message windows, no sounds and the HDD light stops flickering.

A:New computer freezes up

have you tried vice versa? how about putting your new cd rom into your old pc if you still have it, or you could ask a buddy to pop into his pc and see the results. now is the problem something like this: as soon as you pop in a cd the drive just spin likes crazy? and seems to take up all your resources? I would really suspect a faulty cd drive, but you claim the old does the same thing?

First, I had two office programs, MS Office XP Pro and OpenOffice, and a game, Wizard 101, that were interacting poorly. Wizard 101 wasn't loading, and instead it would tell me it was configuring Office XP. Trying to run OpenOffice would only cause it to try to load Office XP, and it would load the same configuring notice. It's the same configuring notice as if I had used up the trial and hadn't put in a correct key, though I have a valid key.

So I attempted to uninstall Office XP and OpenOffice so I could reinstall OpenOffice only. This way Wizard 101 would do whatever it was doing through a working OpenOffice instead and work just fine. I uninstalled Office XP first through the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. Then when I tried to uninstall OpenOffice, it told me it had to undo the Office XP uninstall to work. I let it do so, so it un-uninstalled Office XP and uninstalled OpenOffice. Office XP wouldn't show up in the program list any more, and I couldn't run it from the icons, but Wizard 101 functioned properly.

I also removed some downloaded games. Remember the game Jill of the Jungle? I downloaded those games, played them and erased them. I scanned for viruses at this point, finding nothing.

On the next restart, it took like fifteen times longer to go through the startup process and get Windows loaded. Nothing would run properly. It felt like trying to run 2009 applications on a computer made in 1996. However, the task manager didn't sh... Read more

If this is a Desktop, open the side and blow out all dust with compressed air. Start it up and make sure all fans are spinning. Boot into Safe Mode. Does that work? If so, go to Start/Run and type in CMD in the Command Prompt type in chkdsk /F and hit enter. Now type a Y and reboot the computer. The Check Disk Utility will try and fix any errors. You may need to go into the Setup Bios and post the Temperatures, Fan Speeds and Voltages
