REGISTRY problems lead to major Laptop problems

Q: REGISTRY problems lead to major Laptop problems

On Sunday my laptop (running windows XP Home Edition) froze up and when I rebooted discovered EVERY file was having LOST CLUSTER problems. When I finally was able to get into windows most major functions such as IE 6.0 browser and Outlook Express would not work properly. I was able to run a registry fix program I had and it 'corrected' over 330 errors in the registry. However, it still has not corrected my problem.

I use Earthlink and I contacted them this morning and they suggested I run SFC /SCANNOW and re-install IE. However, I get the following error:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been such down to prevent damage to your computer

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

...
...

Begin Dump of Physical Memory"

Please can any one help me. I am not sure what happened but now most systems are not working. It keeps on rebooting into a dyagnostic mode where it checks lost clusters and If I manage to bypass this and get into windows desktop, it comes up with all sorts of DLL errors being corrupted and that I should run CHKDSK (which I did but then it hangs the machine and the starts the whole cycle again)....

I am not too familiar with the REGISTRY and I need some help.

Thanks.

[Tuesday morning] I have additional information:

I now get the following errors:

Errors in Windows/Prefetch/RNDAL.EXE-15330267.pf

and

Windows Delayed Write Failed messages. A whole bunch
dispex.dll.new
bootok.exe.new
dimap.dll.new
crtdll.dll.new
comsetup.dll.new
capesnpn.dll.new
cdm.dll.new
charmap.exe.new

etc...

Also, when I try and select UPDATE WINDOWS from TOOLS in IE 6.0,
it creates an ERROR REPORT for Microsoft and shuts down the browser

Preferred Solution: REGISTRY problems lead to major Laptop problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a USB key that I need to delete. I have properly set the owner and permissions for full access. No matter what I do it does not work. It tells me error deleting key. And to add insult to injury, every time after I try deleting a subkey, windows adds a subfolder under that key's folder!!! This is pure insanity. I have tried setting the ownership properties for all the subkeys but when I do that it says it was unable to change some of the subkey properties... This is an endless circle. None of the normal techniques work. At this point the only option is to delete keys outside the regedit tool by hacking the system. Doubt I will get advice on how to do that... In any case, looking for some clever tips, as normal methods are not working...

thanks,

brian

I tried to un-install Office 2007. But it would not un-install. So I went online searching for answers. and I found this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/
I tried to follow the directions, but I think I got so overwhelmed and scared that I did not continue. But what I did do might have been the reason that I got more problems now.

Now I am not able to use my own Office XP 2002.
I am not able to re-install nor un-install any of the office products (2002 or 2007).

Tonight, I used the CD to re-install office 2007 (trial), I got the Error 1321:
"Setup cannot modify the file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office12\1033\PROTTPLV.XLS Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update.

A few days ago, I tried to re-install Office xp 2003, and I got similar Errors.

Please Help!

Thanks,

I ended up getting the AV Security Suite virus or trojan horse on my old work laptop and so I am writing this message using my PC. I was going through this forum's tutorial on removing the AV Security Suite here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...-security-suiteI tried to enter the Safe Mode by pushing F8 on start up but nothing happened and so I took your advice and typed "msconfig" in the Run box and used the System Configuration Utility/BOOT.INI and did the /SAFEBOOT and then restarted. Well this worked great but my problem is that when I put in my usual password, it is incorrect. I have only had two passwords with this computer and neither of them are working. What do I do? The computer keeps opening in Safe Mode. As for the laptop, it is an old work computer that when the company closed down for good, they gave it to me for free. With that, I was not the Admin. How do I proceed? Do I need to create a floppy boot disk as noted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/create-floppy-boot-disk-in-windows/The computer does not have a floppy drive.Fester

Hi Fester,Unfortunately we cannot help you getting around a password. See also the board rulesNo subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures.I certainly see your problem, but the only thing I can suggest you, is contacting the company and obtaining the password or accessing your own non-administrator account.

My problem isn't much but I'm worried that it will cause other problems because the computer just came in the mail yesterday and previously acted up.

I use Windows XP, Tablet eddition on a Tablet PC made by Averatec.

The mouse sometimes jumps. I know that's not a big deal but it makes me worried. It does it occasionaly, without warning, and sometimes this causes the webpage to go back the the previoius page.

This honestly isn't that big a problem but it happened to my Mom's latop and it seems to be getting worse and worse. Then again, her laptop isn't in any good condition.

I don't concider this much of a problem, but previoiusly the Windows loaded oddly and got stuck on this blue "windows" screen and after turning it off and on it still wouldn't work. It kept freezing there so I reformated the computer. (This is the day after I got it.) I'm not sure if I was supposed to reformat it, but the technical support was closed for the holidays and I was angry. (Btw, does formating too many times hurt a computer in any way?)

So right now I"m just trying to use it as much as I can to see if it glitches. Watching DVDs, updating it so turning it off and on to see if it goes to the screen again, ect.

But, does it seem like something is wrong with the system? I don't know.. I'm just worried if it does that blue screen again and if these mouse problems could mean more problems in the future.

So heres the issue, I came to my sisters house for the weekend and she asked if I could fix her laptop. It is a Compaq Presario V2000 running Windows XP. First off it had the Windows Recovery and Restore Viruses which I believe I have removed. It also has a browser hijacker and the thing that plays audio ads in the background. Also, something that just opens the disk tray randomly. To add to all this it is still running SP2. I have tried to upgrade it and SP3 install fails every time. I get the volsnap.sys error. I have retrieved the desktop background and icons and have regained control of the task manager. I have used AVG Anti Virus to clear some additional things off as well but there are still obvious problems. I would like to just reformat the thing but it seems she has no windows disks for her desktop(which is a whole other project) or this laptop. I have downloaded HJT as well but at this point I think that a reformat may be the only legit option. Should I download a copy of Windows from the internet and use it with the licenses of her respective computers, or should I actually try to get all this stuff off? I have attached the HJT log. Any help is appreciated.

Hi

I am having multiple problems with my laptop. I have a Toshiba pre-installed with Vista.

All of a sudden, yesterday, the internet on the laptop stopped working. I have a desktop computer as well, and the internet on the other computer was working fine.

The internet wireless icon appears fine, as if it should be connected to the internet.

Anytime I re-started my computer, the following error message pops up from Microsoft Windows:

Host Process for Windows Services Stopped Working and was Closed.

Then, I get a pop up from Norton Anti-Virus, saying:

Auto-Protect Experienced an Unexpected Error, 0x000003E8

Everything freezes and I can't even shut down the computer and have to wait for the battery to drain.

I also get the message:

DHCP Failed

I have tried re-starting it in 'Safe Mode with Networking'. Yesterday, in this mode, the Internet was working, but today it is not working at all.

I am at a loss as to what to do. The problem is on the laptop only. I have searched online on my desktop computer and this could be a malware/virus destroying my laptop ... but I don't know how to get rid of it when I have no internet access to download software which can search and destroy it.

I downloaded MalwareBytes onto my desktop and tried transferring onto my laptop. It works fine on the desktop but will not function on the laptop.

I went into the Event Log on the laptop to see what exactly happened, and it says it is not functioning.

Can anybody help me please?

Okay, I just want to start this thread off by saying I've been doing a lot of googling since yesterday (when I moved back in to campus). I've read a lot of info, but I've gotten confused and frustrated, so I'm making this thread to get a more personal response.

I got my new laptop during this past summer, where I spent my time at home on dial up. When I moved back in, I couldn't connect to wireless (any wireless) or use an internet cable connection. Last night, when I tried the wireless, it did work, probably from some fiddling I did. Only IPV4 Connectivity. IPv6 has no access.

My network adapters are:
Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter
Marvell Yukon 88E8059 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

My laptop is a Samsung R580.

For the cable:

My Network and Sharing Center looks like this when the cable is plugged in and wireless is turned off (link goes to screenshot).

When I use "Diagnose" for the problems, I get this:

So last night I'm surfing the webon my wife's work computer. When I was done, I found I had contracted something nasty. I posted a few other threads but thought I'd compile it all into one.

First - at startup, I get a C:\WINDOWS\redadpu77.exe warning with the following message: windows cannot find "C:\WINDOWS\redadpu77.exe ". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click start and then click search.

At the same time as this message comes up I get a Norton warning that says a Downloader was blocked. I looked in the Norton log and found that it was blocking the same file "C:\WINDOWS\redadpu77.exe"

Second - When I open a browser for the first time after starup I receive this Windows Script Host message:

Thirdly - last night I realized that I had a problem with some sort of Downloader that Norton keeps blocking. Last night it was some sort of tops-banner. Just now Norton blocked something classified as an Trojan Adclicker with a source of C:\Program Files\func.exe

I also ran HJT and checked a few things for deletion and maybe screwed that up. This is the main problem. I'm not sure what I deleted because we don't have a backup saved.

I might be in big trouble here since this is my wife's computer and I really shouldn't be using it to search the web.

HI, I'm a newbie here. My P4-2.2 Micron Transport X1000 Laptop came with a QSI CD-Rom drive. I've just purchased a QSI SBW-242B CD-RW/DVD combo drive and attempted to install it last night multiple times. Each time I tried, the laptop failed to boot to the OS (Win XP Home) and stayed on the MPC splash screen . When I attempted to get into the bio's the first couple of times by hitting F3 I got a message that there was not Operating System. Finally I remember that on Micron Transport laptops you have to hit F2 to get to the Bios. When I did that there is no primary drive (C-drive) or CD-RW/DVD listed!
If I re-install the original CD-Rom drive weverything is back to normal.
Am I doing something wrong here or is the new unit just not compatible with my laptop?
Please help, time is of the essence here as I only have a few days to return the unit and get a refund.

A:Major Problems swapping laptop CD-ROM for CD-RW/DVD Drive

Would have been a good idea to contact the manufacturer before even buying the DVD drive to check for compatibility as well as if it is an upgrade path that is even possible. More than likely it will not work in that laptop. Plug the old CD-ROM and and I am sure everything will work.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition. For the past 3-6 months I have had several problems with my internet connection, that several technicians have not been able to figure out. I am now thinking this "problem that chose to rear its ugly head" is maybe the cause of it.This is what happened as of 6:35:I was trying to open a file in Microsoft Word 2007. It all the sudden shut down. I'm like okay... and opened it back up. I tried this several times. Then it finally opened again and I found my way into the 'Diagnostics' section of Word '07. I ran the diagnostics and it was on the very last leg of the test when BOOM everything shutdown, and up popped the "Blue Screen". This is the 'First' time this has happened in quite a while so I chose to restart my computer. I did so and so far no problems but I would like to know what may have cause this?I have a sibling that has installed various programs which I do not know if these may be a cause of the problem;muvee autoProducer 4.5, NCH Software Suite, Nero 7 Essentials, Picasa 3, Pixillion Image Converter, WavePad sound editor, VSO ConvertXtoDVD 3, 3ivx MPEG-4 5.0.3, Vuze and several other DVD converter, ripper, and burner programs. I had a "print screen" I was going to attach of the error I had received tonight but I accidently copied over it. I posted on here recently about a problem on my computer. I was able to correct this, the problem had resulted from a corrupt software hive. Now that I have all of my files safe and sound, I am having problems regaining ownership of my computer. It shows that I am the owner and administrator when I log on and there are no other accounts, yet when I look for files it shows a folder for owner and it also has a separate folder for owner.jujubee (my computer's name) and I am only recognized as owner.jujubee. I can access my music, favorites list, pictures, papers for school, but because it does not recognize me as the official owner in some way, I cannot access any of the software I installed as the previous owner, including the photoshop, office 2003, and dreamweaver. I have tried to reinstall all of this software, but since it is still on my computer, it won't let me reinstall it.

Would my best bet be to save all of the files I need and clear out the hard drive and reload it all, or is there more that I can do?

Didn't get time to read the error at the time.. anyways.. I was playing WoW (world of warcraft) some don't know I'm certain... So while playing My screen went rather insane and glitchy and the sound went a bit outa hand and sounded as if a machine gun had gone off.. Then the screen went blue and informed of a critical error.. I turned off my laptop and restarted it and did a repair. It did not work. Laptop will not start up It gets to a black screen with the usual print for starting up in safemode. but theres a new choice saying restart in last known good configuration I click that and it starts gets to the screen that is black with HP Logo and a Loading bar Then freezes up and the screen gets glitchy again. so i restart.. the black screen also has a few lines at top that say I need to REpair vista with a install disk (which I do not have)
Just an hour ago I turned laptop on and Click f10 and went to the setup menu. and went to the diagnostic section and am running the harddisk Diagnostic. and I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me what happened and how to fix it.. if it's fixable and everything within.

the diagnostic came up as a pass... which means ... well I have no idea.

I do know it wasn't a virus.. the error said there was problem with Windows Vista itself.

This started last October when my Outlook 2003 stopped sending and receiving. After trying to fix it for two months I took it into the shop. First time was told it worked but it didn't the second time I took it in, the tech said that there was some kind of security setting/license that had to be updated. He did it and the next thing I knew I have 435 e-mails coming in. I figured success.

Now I have no power point and Mozilla Firefox won't boot. I tried to reinstall Microsoft Office Professional 2003 to reinstall Powerpoint and I keep getting a message that it can't find "mainsp3.msp" and wants me to browse to it. No clue what that is?

Mozilla starts to boot and a little box labeled "Alert shows up but nothing in the box to see what the alert is. One time before the alerts came up I got a message that it can't find "firefox.exe". I uninstalled it and reinstalled it to no avail.

I was going to reinstalled Windows XP Home over itself but I got to a screen saying it couldn't but I could repair, so I chose repair. I seems to have reinstalled and afterward updated itself.

Anyone know how to fix these. I'm about ready to format the hard drive at this point.

You should post in the Malware section, in order to rule out any Malicious software.

I have OE 2003 and you have to make sure you have SP3 for Outlook (not XP but that should be done also) installed as it solves many problems.

So... here's the thing:

My computer has been making this strange noise lately. Like a piercing whistle... I narrowed it down to my graphics card or my CPU fan.

I take out the graphics card and swap it with this complete POS card I had laying around. I was trying to figure out where the noise was coming from. Well... the noise quit for a day or so ... but then it was back. So I'm like... phew! Not my video card.

So I attempt to put it back in. All the software/drivers are installed ... but when I put it back in, I get the black "Windows did not start correctly...how do you want to start up?" screen. If I select the Start Windows Normally option, it restarts and goes back to that screen. If I choose one of the "Safe Mode" starts, My monitor reads "Signal Out of range."

Long story short ... I put the POS card back in, went to Display Options and chose for the system not to use the cheap card, thinking that the system was loading the presets for that card and not the better one, making the refresh rates and resolution all out of wack.

Since I disabled the POS card, now neither work and when I reboot the system... I get those screens for both cards.

I can't get into windows.

I tried using my Windows Recovery Console... but I have no idea what the hell I'm doing.

Can somebody please help me?

A:Video Card Woes lead to XP Problems... Can't Log In

Hi nick.rambo

We had an older fellow in our neighborhood who had a saying "The enemy of Good is Better" [... I'm getting to be his age, so I guess I can use his saying by now]. Let's see if we can get your video back, & then help with the noise too.
_________
One quick question first -- what are you referring to by "POS card"? I know most major card brands & types - but I haven't seen that acronym applied to a video card [in the business world, it's "Point Of Sale"] .
_________

To get your video back:
1) Power off the computer, and unplug the power cord.
2) Put the original video card back in. If it is a PCI-Express card, make sure it has all the power connections it needs attached.
3) Leave the case open (for later = when we troubleshoot the source of the noise).
4) Replug the power cable
5) Start the computer, but start tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting. Choose "Safe Mode" from the Boot Menu. [If you don't enter Safe Mode on first try, reboot & try again -- F8 has to be pressed at just the right moment (that's why it helps to keep tapping it until it works)]

Safe Mode bypasses the regular video drivers, and uses the built-in Standard VGA video drivers that all Windows-compliant cards can run. The display will look awful, only 16 colors, and it will be a smaller resolution than you are used to, but it will allow you to fix things.

6) Log on as "Administrator", and ty... Read more

Hi guys,

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. On Tuesday I noticed while typing in an instant messenger that wherever my curser was laying my computer would randomly click. I've had this computer for almost two years so i've learned where to place my hands to avoid the touchpad while typing. I've had a few minor viruses and junk on my computer but it nearly ran the same as when I pulled it out of the box for the first time. After running virus scans and anti-malware programs which didn't surface a thing I decided to roll back my system to a few days previous before the issues turned up. When that proved to be unaffective I turned off my touchpad and solely used my USB mouse to see if I could rule out a hardware issue. My USB mouse now sometimes stops to load a phantom program for a brief second or becomes choppy and sometimes won't move like it's supposed to. On top of these issues I've now started to notice my favicons changing to things they aren't supposed to be... (Google now displays the "dancing banana" icon, msn displays a laptop, Google Maps displays the US Postal Service icon, etc.) More virus scans and anti-malware programs provide nothing. I am at a loss on what to do and the closest computer repair site has a waiting list into the new year.

Any and all help are appreciated. I can provide HijackThis logs when asked and will also provide specs if needed.

My laptop has Vista, and yesturday everything was fine, I shut it down, but when I tried to start it up a few hours later it when to the screen where you can start it normally or do something different, which was recommended, which linked me to the Tech Guys thing on my computer. Basically, my dad managed to use it to check the D disk (or drive) which had something wrong which he seems to have fixed by defragging it all for me. Now start up etc is fine, except that some web pages aren't working properly anymore. I was trying to link to an online passport service on YouGov, and it went nowhere, and when I try to log onto my internet banking it just keeps refreshing the memorable info page, so I cant get onto my accounts etc. I've tried both those things on a different computer and it all worked fine, so there's something wrong with mine now. I've never had this problem before, and my dad did adjust the pop-up setting but no change. I do need to be able to access these things from this laptop, so does any body know what's wrong?? Thank you

Hello amdamd and welcome to TSF,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the b... Read more

Hi. Thanks for the opportunity to post my woes here.

I have been fighting my computer for a couple of weeks and I am throwing in the towel after many sleepless nights and much frustration , thus this post. All help gratefully received.

I am running windows xp with sp2 on an HP Pavilion with intel pentium 4 processor. I am currently using system mechanic 6 pro with its Kaspersky antivirus and Spython for spyware and malware. Previously I was using AVG free until about 6 weeks ago. Prior to that, Nortons. (I got rid of Nortons because it seemed to be making my computer very slow, which is now kind of ironic .)

Anyway, for the last few months, this computer has been constantly beset by annoying bugs of the kind which slow down everything. I have been using lavasoft's adaware and always find when the computer slows that there is one ore more registry errors. I also have been using SpyBot to keep this computer afloat which usually picks up some tracking cookies etc only.

Lately though, the 'bugs' are more and more frequent and the computer slows to a crawl at every session, until this week when it just remained operating at a snail's pace and I don't seem to be able to locate and fix the problem. I have tried changing browsers, to no avail.

Also, the windows installer keeps starting up by itself and trying to install frontpage 2000 - without any instruction from me. I have to hit cancel 3 times when the little box comes up to install frontpage 2000 ... Read more

Hello,

I'm working to clean this computer out today, except I've ran across some problems. Here's what going on. This computer first off has some crazy partitions. The C drive has 15 GB with 2% free space (used to be zero), and the D drive (where a backup is, this is a HP) has 60 GB with 94% free space. Everything on the computer is on the C drive. Music (theres a ton) programs, everything. The last thing I want to do is a reformat, since right now I have no way of transporting all these files elsewhere. There are a few users logged in, but their mom wont be back for an hour or two, and she has Admin rights with a password I dont know. That means I cant install some programs for now. This was written by me a week ago. If you want the background story, please skim over it

---------------------------------------------------------About a month ago, I started to randomly recieve these errors which would result in the blue screen of death including error messages such as page_fault_in_nonpaged_area and IRQL_not_less_or_equal. I googled them and found that various factors including faulty drivers or even hardware problems were to blame. But then other problems starting to arise, such as missing dll files messages at startup, etc. It might've been a virus too...after 1000x system checks, no such luck in finding one. It got so bad that I coudln't stay on the desktop long enough to save my files. Even while attempting to reformat, the computer wouldn't last long enough before the blue screen attacks. At the time I thought it was hardware problem. I had opened my case to find a ridiculous amount of dust built up. After a few days the computer wouldn't turn on altogether.

So I ordered a new case, speakers, monitors (I needed an upgrade from my previous ones...this is unrelated to the problem) and a new motherboard. After essentially building a new computer from old parts, I start up only to find the same problems. Okay, so it's a software problem...probably some ******* virus that caused all of these problems. Too confirm this I removed other hardware and replaced it and the same error messages came up at random times....so this is a virus. Or is it? Could it... Read more

A:Major MAJOR problems...virus?

Both of these messages are generated for one of two reasons either a conflicting driver trying to access areas it shouldn't or memory.

After the IRQ not less message there should be the name of a file, which will be a driver, update or remove that device driver and the device if needed (USB 2 devices are notorious for this), if there is no file name your memory is suspect.

Its very unlikely these are the symptoms of any virus, after all they can only proliferate if your machine runs, so its not much use if it keeps keeling over!

Hi,

I almost gave up on computers entirely. I have spent days and weeks researching why my computers are not working properly and I can't figure it out. I have two computers, one desktop and one laptop. Both are running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. They are both running Internet Explorer 7. They are both having similar problems.

My desktop:
In internet explorer flash doesn't work. It is not just the new way to embed flash for IE 7 because no flash site will work (including Adobe's). SWF's dragged and dropped into the browser will not play either. Everything works fine in Firefox so it is not the way that flash is installed (however, I have tried uninstalling it using adobe's uninstaller and then reinstalling it with the standalone installer). Nothing seems to work.

My Laptop:
Strange, this one is; however, I will focus on the IE problems here and will post the other problems in another category. I first noticed the problem when I tried to log into yahoo. It would go to the logging in page and then not do anything. I eventually found out that any javascript, on any page, would not work. I went into internet options and enabled active script and anything else that looked like it may help, yet it didn't. I then noticed that it wouldn't print when I pressed ctrl+p. The print window doesn't even come up (it doesn't do anything). I also noticed that when I pressed ctrl+f to find something on the page the find window comes up but the next and previous buttons ar... Read more

I mistakenly posted this in the "General Security" forum....I apologise.

I have been attempting to assist a friend via "Remote Assistance" however have come up against issues that are beyone my scope of experience. I'm sure that this issue is a malware/spyware/virus related thing.
She is running Win XP-Pro, dual AMD processors, plenty of RAM etc. and I don't think that SP3 has been installed.
When we attempted the remote assistance, I immediately noticed that her security settings had been set WAY too low, I reset them to the "default" settings. I ran Spybot, it found 10 or so problems, which I "fixed" using Spybot. I then saw that her AV program (AVG, and a paid subscription) wasn't even enabled...I was unable to reload it, so I deleted it and installed the free Comcast version of McAfee System Suite. I ran a scan using McAfee, and it found 15 problems which were either deleted or quarantined.
Her computer still has problems, which are that the only way she can access it is by clicking Safe Mode with Networking, in addition, the tool tray is not displayed, her printer has somehow been uninstalled, etc. I did attempt to do a System Restore to a previous date, however was not successful.
In all liklihood, I will be the one doing the actual "work" regarding a HJT log etc. because she is a novice regarding computers. Therefore, I'll use remote assistance to help her. Please let me know if you need additional ... Read more

I'm having some trouble with my computer and I'm really hoping that you guys can help. I've tried another forum but those guys are just too slow to get a reply back to someone. Especially considering that it has been a few days since I last heard from them. Anyway, if this is in the wrong forum, I'm terribly sorry. I have XP so I'm assuming it goes in here.

Anyway, IE will not work for me. When I open it and go to click links, it gives me this pop up about the page not displaying properly. I try closing it off and continuing but it just keeps popping back up. In order to get around the net, I've got to use the tab key. That's why I downloaded FireFox and it works. Hwoever, I like using IE on certain things and I'd like to fix it.

Also, the restore the computer back to an earlier time feature doesn't work. I try to do it, because I deleted a program called SystemSuit off the computer that my fixer put on here. I deleted that off because there was an annoying pop up on there that always wanted my permission in order to view a page or something and it got annoying. Since then, this computer has went down hill.

I don't want to put out more money just to have him do the same **** he has already done that basically was nothing. Someone please help.

To me this sounds as though your 'IE/Home Page' has been 'hijacked' by malware.

Having said that there is a way to rectify this issue, and that is visit this link, and follow the steps; then, post your HJT log in the HJT forum and one of the trained analysts will help you 'clean' your system.

Good Luck with it.

However, if the HJT guys and girls say your system is 'clean' after they've gone through it with you, post back here and we will assess other avenues of possibility.

Ok..I was sent here after investigation of my pc by the malware pros. I am running Windows XP and am having problems with several things. First off, I can not access the Windows Update site. It sends back an error 0x80072EFD. I have followed through with all the suggestions on the Windows website for correcting this error, but still nothing.

I am also having a problem with my Outlook Express. Some emails go through and some don't.

I got silly this morning and put in my XP Home Edition disk to try to repair things, and now..it seems I am worse off than I was.

Can anyone help me??

Is this an Windows XP CD or a recovery CD from the computer manufacturer? What exactly did you do when you put the disk in?

For me I am lost and need my pc back to normal. I first got my interenet home page set to about:blank. I have seen several other posts with similar problems. Beyond that my windows screen showing all of my program shortcuts and my menu bar at the bottom of the screen is all gone too. The only way to run programs right now is alt-control-del and start new tasks. I cannot even get the the start-run sequence I need for the basics. I also can't get to shortcut "my computer", etc. I cannot find my windows XP restore disc that supposedly came with PC. Please help.
