Windows Media Player crashes on launch

Q: Windows Media Player crashes on launch

So I have this infamous windows media player crashes on launch issue after I did a restore from one harddrive to another using Ultimate x64 backup feature. Now whenever I launch windows media player it crashes on launch with the indiv01.exe fault. I looked at the guide to fix it and how I need to edit the registry, but I have no registry entry for DRM/DataPath. How would I add it or does anyone have more detailed steps on how to set this up if I don't even have this registry key? I also do not have any DRM content, so this might be why i don't have this datapath. I'll do a re-install if I have to, but I really don't want to at the moment.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player crashes on launch

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi soulesschild,

Have you run system file checker to restore any missing/corrupted system files?
Run Checkdisk as well.
System Files - SFC Command
Check Disk - chkdsk
If that doesn't work, try repairing your OS with the repair option on your installation disk, if you have one.

After updating my NET Framework to 3.5 for some reason I can't launch Windows Media Player 11. It will not open a wmv file and it will not launch from the program icon. Other video players on my PC work fine. I've already done some research on this, including trying to uninstall v.11 but apparently I can't do that because it's integrated with my VISTA OS. I've also tried to download an earlier version but it won't let me install it because v.11 is already installed. Any help much appreciated!

I used to be able to click on a video link on a web page, and Media Player would start up and play it. Easy. Convenient. Now, I get an error page similar to that of a missing page. So, as a result, I have to download each video to my Desktop and then play it from there.

Does anybody anywhere have any idea what I'm talking about? I am overwhelmigly disappointed and frustrated that I cannot find a solution to this.

Hi, I recently downloaded WM Recorder for Windows Media Player. It seems like I have made a mistake since the program seems only compatible for Windows Media Player 9, and I now have Windows Media Player 10. Now when I open Windows Media Player 10, it works for about 2-3 seconds, then it hangs and basically crashes every time.

Here is the error signature after I have to manually end the process...

szAppName : wmplayer.exe szAppVer : szModName : hungapp
szModVer : offset : 00000000 Click to expand...

Please help me so I can fix Windows Media Player 10. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it many times and it still does the same thing. Thank you for your help.

EDIT: I have already uninstalled WMRecorder.

What could be the possible reason for the crash?
Has it got to be an error in the RTP payload data?
Or is there some error while establishing the session?

I'm having problems with WMP crashing. Whenever I try to view my library, it crashes.

Also, when watching video, the video will play for a while, but then crash. It seems to happen at a random point in the video and it is never the same. Once it happens, I don't have any problems with crashing while watching video until I restart my computer or wake it up from sleep.

Why is that? DirectX 9,0c (if thats any help)

A:Windows Media Player crashes

some codecs are not compatible with each other which could be at issue. Also the more codecs you have the more it slow down your machine. The best way is not to install codec packs and uninstall any you have in your system then if you need to play a video download a utility like "Gspot" and only download codecs that are nessary to play that file.

I've been having this problem for a while now and it's driving me nuts. My Windows Media Player consistently turns itself off without any kind of error message. It simply vanishes from the screen. It seems to happen whether I play music or video or simply leave it running without clicking on any media file. The weirdest thing is that if I do play music or video, WMP will shut down after exactly 3 minutes every time.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it? Thanks for your help.

Anyway, I tried the 'change of codec name' fix which removes some sort of conflict, but that hasn't stopped WMP crashing.

There must be conflicting codecs. I don't know what to suggest except to try a different app or version, or you could try to disable the PI codecs, one by one, to see if you can determine the problem.

Hi there

An annoying little problem:

While listening to my music on WMP9, and reading this forum (for instance), the WMP makes a very weird noise after several songs have played, stops playing the song, and then freezes (crashes?) and I can't do anything. There is no ability to move the mouse and control/alt/delete will not bring up the Windows Task Manager. All I can do is reboot from the reset button on the box.
I am using Firefox browser except for getting updates and then I use IE6.
I have all my Windows updates but have chosen NOT to install SP2 at this time.

I have done a search in this forum for this problem and am wondering if I have:

1. Too many things running on start up, but I don't know what to keep or not.

2. I also thought it might be not enough memory, but I do not know where to look for that.

3. This started happening this weekend and after coincidently (or not) installing my son's game... so that might be relevent. See here: http://forums.techguy.org/t311473.html

I also checked the WMP9 "fix" for this crash problem that I saw posted in the search.

I have gone to C: Documents and Settings > Customer > Local Settings > and emptied all the Temporary Internet Files Folder, but did not know if I could delete all the files found in the Temp folder (176 mg)

As for WMP10...am not intersted in upgrading from WMP9 to 10 at this time, as I tried it a while ago and didn't like it or it didn't like me or my computer. I... Read more

I am having with Windows Media Player crashing when I open it. It doesn't matter if I am trying to listen to my library, rip or burn cds. I get an error stating "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "

This started about a month ago and I have tried uninstalling/installing and updating.

The Error signature
AppName:wmplayer.exe AppVer.11.0.5721.5145 Modname: indiv02.key Modver.11.06000.6324 offset:0010f862

Do you have any codec packs installed ?

Do you have access to a valid XP cd ?

Hi All,

I have a problem trying to launch Windows Media Player. When I double-click a .wma file, the O/S crashes and I have to reboot. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling WMP with no luck. I've even become desperate enough to do a total system recovery from CD and the problem still happens after downloading and installing WMP. I am running Win 98 (not SE) on a HP Pavilion, 400mhz Celeron processor, 96 MB RAM. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance!

A:Windows Media Player Crashes System

Which version are you using? Also, is it set up for .wma extensions? In 6.4, go to View | Options | Formats. Ensure all boxes are ticked. for 7 I don't know, but it should be more or less the same.

Have you made sure you have all the updates from Microsoft? There is one about the codecs: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=31921

Also, what do you have running at startup? This may cause a conflict somewhere. Go to Run and type MSINFO32 Go to Software Enviroment, Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Trying to watch my CBT Nugget videos as I have been doing all week long. I do pretty much the same thing on my desktop that I do on my desktop. Same applications, same settings just about, etc.

Well, I was watching a video earlier on my desktop for quite awhile (accessing it through the external HD locally attached to the desktop), and then I moved over to the laptop and tried accessing it again through the external (via share) that's connected to my desktop.

Worked yesterday, now today it's freezing.. I'll open the file and it'll play, but the entire application becomes inaccessible.

Actually, it just unfroze. But it seems like it does this upon load for the first 2 minutes, then it unfreezes itself. I already tried uninstalling/installing it again and didn't fix the problem

This just started yesterday, and I've used this machine for 2+ years without any problems.

A:Windows Explorer crashes, especially when I use Media Player

This problem seems very odd but it is a an early indication of Malware in system or corrupt shell files.
Youcan try simple methods first being making sure pc is virus and spyware free.
Then going to microsoft update website to download the latest updates.
Then you could try system restore, go to accessories, system tools and system restore, pick a date and restore system to it.
Last options
click start then run type sfc /scannow
mind the space, insert system disk and wait for it to finish. This will check all system files and make sure they are accurate ie not corrupt or fake.

Most of the time when I try to play a video with WMP 12, it crashes ("Windows Media Player has stopped working"). Nothing I've tried has worked, including:
Run the msdt.exe -id WindowsMediaPlayerConfigurationDiagnostic troubleshooting wizard
Unselected WMP in Windows Features, rebooted, re-selected it, rebooted
Run SFC /SCANNOW (found no corrupt files)
Run the Fix WMP Utility from The Windows Club
I'm at a dead end. There doesn't seem to be a pattern with the fails; they happen with some videos but not with others in the same video format. VLC media player has no trouble with any of them.
Anyone have any suggestions for getting WMP working? Iím running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I've been having trouble with Windows Media Player for a while now. This problem started when I was using WMP10, though I now have 11 and am still having the same issue.

The only symptom I have is that when I open most video files, WMP simply crashes with a generic "WMP has encountered an error and needs to close" message. There are some files that work, but probably 75% of them do not.

It's most frustrating when I try to watch a news story or other video embedded in a web page. If the site is using a WMP control for the video, it crashes the site pretty much 100% of the time. (Internet Explorer 6)

This is really driving me crazy, but the only thing I can think of to try to fix it is to totally uninstall the program and start from scratch... and that doesn't seem to be possible with WMP.

Any suggestions on how one might go about trying to get back to a clean, working install on something like this?

When its the case of the video freezing, I can minimize then maximize the player and the video plays a few more seconds then freezes again. When its the case of computer crash and i have to do a hard re-boot, after booting I sometimes get a blue screen stating "dumping physical memory to disk" and computer re-boots again. The same thing happens with streaming video. I have tried to uninstall and re-install WMP but it didnt help. I downloaded the DivX player and my videos play fine on there but when it comes to streaming videos, the default is WMP. A:Windows Media Player 9 crashes my computer... help

Hello! Welcome to TechSpot

It sounds like a video driver or other driver conflict.
There is windows media player ver 10 out that might help.
Other wise start with updating all your drivers.

I see you have a via chipset, there is a new ver driver from via
called hyperion, either 500a or 4 in 1.
check your bios for newer one.

With the older video (onboard? shared ram?) if so
you may want to consider installing a new video card.
Ram will also dramatically increase performance.

Sorry to sound like a comercial but your system is feeling it's age.
Not that it's a bad system, it's just likely to have more and more
problems with new stuff like games, videos, and programs.

I have tried uninstalling all codecs and reinstalling them. I tried rolling my system back. I've screwed around with wininet.dll and the index.dat files. I saw this thread http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/... and screwed around with all of the settings in the WMP options. Ports have never been a problem for me; neither has firewalls. Connection settings seem fine. I tried to access the .mpg file under a Guest account in XP and it does not play either. I am under the assumption that a driver is busted somewhere. I have been working at this ALL DAY and I'm just burned out, but I vow to not let this beat me.

Also, I should mention, I both reinstalled WMP9 and then upgraded to WMP11 and neither had any effect on my problem. I have rolled back WMP to version 9, just because I like that version the best.

I tried to uninstall WMP through the add/remove program list, but that really doesn't remove much at all. I think it just gets rid of some icons and access points (ie. from... Read more

A:Windows Media Player 9 crashes when accessing MPEG

I have been struggling with the same problem (see link below).

I am wondering if there might be a defect in the media player download that we both recently downloaded and installed. Maybe a bad codec???

Does anyone know of a second source for MS file downloads???

WMP9 freezes my PC requiring a manual restart.

This started to happen after I previewed a song in kazaa using the Theater.
When I selected preview it actually opened WMP9 up seperatley which I thought was unusual, usually it just plays in kazaa's Theater.

Anyway it crashed and froze everything, then I get this error saying True Vector Firewall (ZoneAlarm) service has stopped.

Great, I thought must be a trojan so I run McAfee and ad-aware and nothing found. I reinstalled WMP9 and same thing is happeneing.

Ive had Media Player problems twice in the last month, both times were viruses which AVG didn't detect. Try an online scan like Panda, that found it for me but couldn't clean it. Had to remove a file manually before reinstalling Player...

please help me... i have a problem with my media player crashing and i dont know what to do... it has never did this before and now its becoming a problem... I cant even burn wmas anymore... i usually put 300 songs on one disc...now when i do it it starts to convert and when it gets about halfway through the media player closes unexpectedly... can anyone help me?

A:windows media player 11 crashes when burning a data cd

Ive never used the windows media player to burn data cds with. What you might try is transfer the songs a little at a time that you want to burn as a data cd from your documents directly to the cd/dvd drive and see if that works for you.If you have a cd/dvd drive that can read and burn dvds put them on a dvd instead that way you can put a lot more on a dvd than a cd.

Hi, everytime I try to play a video in WMP it always crashes and its always because of some quartz.dll file. I already did the revert back to directx 8.1, however the problem is still happening...

A:Windows Media Player crashes when video is played

I would suggest K-Lite Codecs which comes with Media Player classic, which is more stable and easier to use:

After installing URGE, Windows Media Player 11 will no longer play AVI files. When I try to load an AVI, I see an image preview and the file information and stuff, but before it actually starts playing it crashes with a "This program has encountered an unexpected error" dialog. According to the error report, it's most likely related to quartz.dll. I've tried reinstalling WMP11, with no success. I've run GSpot, but none of the video codecs seem to be out of the ordinary. I've also tried installing the Divx codec as recommended in another thread, but it doesn't help. I'd rather not install an entire codec pack just to see if it fixes the problem, because in my experience it does far more harm than good.

Can anybody help? This is a huge issue!

Everytime I go and try to watch a DVD or AVI in the skin view/mode, I get 5 minutes into the movie and I get an error message. "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close"

BUT, if I watch the movie in the regular view/mode with out the skin view, I get no problems and the movie runs fine. <----

Are you only suppose to use the Skin view for Music ? <---

I updated all my codecs at microsoft and got current Divx codecs for my Divx movies.

A:Windows Media Player 10 crashes when watching DVD's and AVI's while in Skin view

if you haven't yet, probably installing Service Pack 2 will ease this problem, else try uninstall reinstall codecpack/wm10/wmvencoder9

btw I heavily recommend using the k-lite mega codecpacks as they prevent weird codec issues you get by downloading these seperately

Sooo, I've been trying to figure this out for about a month now. Whenever I'm playing somethign in WMP it'll play for about 2-3 minutes and then randomly crash. It's with both audio and video, and no error message is displayed. I've tried installing all the regular codecs, I've uninstalled the program, reinstalled the program, rolled back to WMP 10 and none of it worked. A few days ago I used a system restore which temporarily fixed the problem...for one day. Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Try VLC or Media Player Classic just google them and they're freeware... There is a newer one that plays everything. VLC plays everything including FLV flash from youtube.

Starting about two weeks ago, I have had a real problem with my Windows Media Player. When I try to open a video file (.asf, .avi., mpg., .wmv, etc.) the Windows Media Player opens with the "Opening..." status, but the video never plays. When I click STOP, the status changes to "Aborting...", but it never finishes stopping. Then if I try to close the window, I get the computer beep and the window cannot be closed. When I try CTRL+ALT+DEL End Task, it doesn't close the Windows Media Player and my computer freezes. If I try CTRL+ALT+DEL again, I get the blue screen "System is busy" message and my computer is frozen, forcing a restart.

This also happens with Streaming Windows media. Also, when I try to open a Quicktime .mov file, the Quicktime player does not open leading me to wonder if it has anything to do with video processing. I can't get any video to work on my computer now.

Does this have to do with codecs, my video card, or something else? Does this sound familiar? Has this happened to anyone else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows 98 on an HP Pavilion 6535. I am currently using an upgraded version ( of the preinstalled Windows Media Player (6.4). Everything was running fine before and I have no knowledge of what could have caused it.

I recently (yesterday) ran Spybot S&D to get rid of some spyware, but nothing new came up and I have run Spybot plenty of times before without incident.

I have a HP Dv7-1264nr, and I have updated all my drivers. When I use my quick launch buttons touch volume slide while playing music or watching movies, the sound of whatever I'm listening too messes up and sounds robot like during the few seconds I use the touch volume slide. Also whenever I use the volume slide and have windows media player in full screen, the volume slide use cause the media player to exit out of full screen. Someone out there please tell me what to do so I can fix these annoying issues! I would very much appreciate it.

A:Quick Launch Buttons & All Media Player problems.

The fix the issue....you'll have to take it to HP to release proper drivers.
