Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

Q: Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

The test result is under Win7 build 7000
1. Open backup and restore center
2. Set backup settings
a. Choose backup locations to local disk, for example f:\
b. Choose [Let me choose]
c. What do you want to back up?
Only choose the folder of c:\program files\windows photo viewer\
Do not choose [Include a system image]
d. Backup summary
Items are c:\program files\windows photo viewer\
e. Save settings and start backup

Result:
There is no files under F:\TEST-PC\Backup Set 2008-09-29 032022\Backup Files 2008-09-29 032022\Backup files 1.zip\

So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)

Anyone can help me, thank you in advance!

Preferred Solution: Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

A: Backup files fail to backup files in Program Files

Hi

Backup doesn't usually back up a program's files. Since Programs need to be "Installed", it makes no sense to simply back up the program's "program files" folder if no User data is stored in such folders. Since that folder would be fully rebuilt upon it's reinstallation, why does a backup need to be made of it?
I tested this also, and while a backup file was created, the zip folder was empty as was yours.
But again, backing up such a folder makes no sense and is a waste of space in the backup file, so it only makes sense that certain file types are excluded from being backed up.

Files keep being added to my C:\Program Files\Support.com\backup\In\Inbox\
There are so many large files being added that it is now taking about 19 -20 hours to run a virus scan with Norton AntiVirus. Can they or should they be deleted? A typical file name in this folder is 543377899_5602f6bf1_

Ok, I first put explorer so I can see C:\System Volume Information. Then I move into the folder. I can create both a folder and a .txt file. But when I try to copy the restore point files themselves I get access denied. I cant seem to take owner either. I both logged on as admin and just started the explorer 'as admin'. I even did a cacls "System Volume Information" /e /p almighty:f. Still no go. I cant even see permissions on these files. Bit odd since I created them as my regular user (who is admin in a single computer environment). Any ideas, cause I ran out.

A:Fail to manually backup system restore files

Restore points are unique in that it is much easier to designate a new location and manually create new points over trying to backup existing points. Once you have a few made Windows will automatically take over creating new ones to be designated to the new location.

Besides restore points another option besides the backup tools included in Windows would be manually exporting the entire registry as a single file. If a problem comes up that could be imported back into the registry. You can review the guide for restoration as well as backup at Registry - Backup and Restore

When I performed a routine backup from my hard drive to an external drive which had existing files on it, I found that the backup had deleted all the individual files on that external drive. The folders are still there but there are no files in them.
So now I have lost years of data.
Does anyone know what I can do?
I know how to restore regular deleted files but the properties view of the folders say there are no previous versions.
Is there anyway to undo the whole backup?
Thanks

Hello and welcome pinnate. First always good idea to load system specs for us as it makes life so much easier tracking down problems and we shall probably need yours anyway if the problem is going to be difficult.
So - System Info - See Your System Specs
Mate two things you can try one is to use one of the data recovery software's and one that comes to mind is Recuva http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download < download from piriform or another little fix I worked out some time ago which works for me at least and there is a tutorial in here using a bootable stick to the same end but I have not tried that yet my little ditty works fine for me anyway

BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOS to boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL > select TRY

When it is finished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.

I am not sure if it will but I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Can i just copy and paste my program files folder onto an external hard drive and then back onto a fresh install? Will they work or do i need the registry entries too?

A:How To Backup My Program Files (properly)

You cannot back up installed programs. Only data. If you reinstall Windows, then you will need the original disks or downloads for reinstalling the actual programs. There are far too many registry entries for any particular program for you to be able to find and save them all.

Hello,

First time on this forum, so I hope I chose the right category to post my problem. I just got a new laptop, and it has Vista Home Premium.

My problem.. I use a program/application called "DVArchive" (aka: DVA) for archiving my tv shows on my PC (from my ReplayTV). This application worked just fine on XP, but of course, Vista is giving me all kinds of crap.

The application IS working.. It can see my ReplayTV unit, I can access my archived shows, etc. However, Vista is giving me error messages, which are interfering with it and making it crash.

The problem has to do specifically with the applications configuration (.XML) files. I'm pretty tech saavy, but I'm not a computer expert, so I'll just cut and paste the actual error messages below. The listed pathways are where DVArchive stores it's files...

I am using a backup prgram called Karen's Replicator on a vista machine to do a nightly copy of the C drive to a 2nd backup drive in the PC. The problem is, Karen's Replicator is creating all the directory structure, but is not copying the vast majority of files to the target drive. For example, it creates the Users folder and all sub folders, but none of the files are copied.

I checked, and there are no exclusions set up, global or otherwise for Karen's Replicator. I'm at a loss here, and I would really like to use this program. It has worked well on other Vista pcs, just not this one for some reason?

Hey all,

I recently purchased a new Toshiba 1tb HDD. My old WD 1tb HDD has been giving me trouble of late. I occasionally get the BSOD. Also, on occasion, when I reboot the computer it automatically runs the chkdsk program and reports several bad clusters. However the chkdsk program never seems to flag the bad clusters, so periodically, when I reboot, it runs and reports them again.

I would like to image or backup all of the files on my problem HDD, then do a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit (my current OS) to the new HDD, then restore the cloned or image system and program files to the new HDD. I don't want to have to go through the process of reinstalling everything again, when everything seems to be working okay. Since the Win 7 image program makes and exact image of the HDD, then to use that program would cause the new install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit to be overwritten by the image restore. Therefore, if there should be corrupt data under a bad cluster from the old HDD, that data would not be transferred and my existing problem would be transferred to the new HDD.

On the other hand, if I do a disk clone, I am not sure that the existing programs would continue to operate on the new HDD, and would require a fresh install of each program after the fresh install of the Win 7 OS! I would have then wasted my time doing a transfer of program/data files to my newly formatted and freshly installed OS.

A:How do I backup & restore system and program files to a new OS install

Ed, sorry to break this to you but you can not restore an image of your old C drive to a new fresh install of Win7 without overwriting the fresh install. It would be a waste of time to install a fresh install and then overwrite it with an old image.
It is possible to image using Acronis to an external drive and the restoring it to a new hard disk.

You can either backup your data to an external drive and then restore to a new system but not the programs and windows special files.

I believe that Acronis won't backup bad sectors if they are giving you problems. But if your BSOD's are because some system files are on a bad sector. You might be out of luck.

I also believe that there are commercial programs that will move your programs and data to your new hard disk but haven't used any.

Maybe someone else can jump in on one of them.

If you only want to back up files that have changed? You do what is known as an 'incremental' back up. Just make sure that what ever application you employ for backing up you data has that capability. Acronis is one I am quite familiar with and use and it has that functionality. It however is not free.

I have a new HP Pavillion Elite HPE with 920 GB of memory running Windows 7. I am an average computer user. I have a WD external backup drive with 1TB memory. I don't like the backup software that comes with the computer. I can't access anything to see how old the files are. The only option is to restore. Thank God I haven't had to do that. I have the files important to me backed up manually. I tried Nova backup but all I had was a bunch (really- a bunch) of files again that I couldn't access. I had a copy of Norton Ghost that wouldn't work with my old XP computer so I tried it on this one. After days with support manipulating my computer, going through three people to the software engineer, they could not make Ghost work on my (64? whatever) computer.

I don't know if I need a mirror or clone or whatever I've been reading about that I don't understand. I have plenty of room on the backup drive and have CD's and DVD's that will restore, I think. I also want to have those so I can go to my M drive (backup drive) and see my files just like in windows explorer. That way, if anything does happen, I know my files are alright and if I have ... I'm preparing to upgrade from Windows 2000 professional to XP. I would like a perfect backup of my C: drive in case the worst happens and XP kills my computer (so I can revert back to 2000 and my old system without a problem). I have 2 hard drives so I have the room to put an exact image of my C: drive onto the slave drive. Just wanting to get some feedback as to the best way to do this.

So far I just used the "backup now" option in Windows 2000 and saved a .bkf file of my entire drive to the slave. It actually didn't take up that much space--the .bkf must contain some sort of compression.

Anyway, is this the best way to go about protecting myself or would it be worthwhile to instead invest in a 3rd party backup program instead before undertaking this? There are tons of programs out there of course, Norton Ghost, Backup Now, GoBack, or what have you. If Windows' option works well I don't know why people would buy a 3rd party program but I hear about it a lot so I thought I'd ask. Anyone ever restored an entire system from a windows .bkf file before and had difficulty? Protecting myself is pretty important to me.

Any advice would be helpful.

A:Computer backup before upgrade to XP--backup software suggestions,.bkf files,etc?

With the windows backup you have to reinstall windows and then restore the backup to get back to where you were. I use and love ghost because it makes a 100% exact copy of EVERYTHING and all you have to do to get it back is to restore the image and you're up a going again - no need to reinstall windows. Is also fast and can clone one drive to another or create an Image file.

GoBack I don't like and Backup Now needs windows to be installed to restore the backup

G'day everyone

Does anyone know of a simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.

Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs.

I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

Thanks
Samuel

A:Backup software that splits large files for incremental backup

You may want to rethink incremental backups. Where I worked, until I retired, we first used incremental backups for our servers. That seemed like a good approach - make an initial full backup on one day of the week and then only incrementals the rest of the week. That allowed smaller backups however when it came time to restore it was a nightmare making sure the incrementals were installed in the proper order, and it took much longer to restore. A decision was made to only do full backups every night and although the backup was bigger if a restore was needed there was no confusion on order of reinstall and it took less time.

I do the same thing with my own PC backups. I use Acronis True Image, which has incremental backup ability, but I only do full hard drive backups, to a separate hard drive.

hi there

i have a question related to "Previous versions of files" which i have to say is pretty handy...

i wanted to know, if i enabled it on a partition where i have lets say "DATA", which in effect has movies, photos and documents (xls, jpegs, mkvs, movs, avis, etc etc), would that back up the ENTIRE partition? for instance if i have a movie of 2gb, will that be backed up as well?

i currently have it enabled on C: which is the windows/programs partition only..

as far as i can tell you cannot choose which files are going to be backed up or maybe i am missing a setting somewhere?

thanks
Gab

A:Previous versions of files, does it backup ALL files?

Yes. It works well on a data partition. If there are no system data on the partition select the only restore previous versions option.

It doesn't actually back therm up. It keeps them in shadow storage so it is not a true backup. When your allocated shadow storage is used up it will delete the oldest version. As you can see I have 1% of my disk allocated. That gives me a couple of months of versions. You will need to experiment with what works for you

The files appears to be locked because they are *greyed out in BUE. Though they are check, I can't un-check it like the other flat files.

I made a backup disk of different files and now certain Word documents on the disk and when loaded back onto the laptop show with the file extention .LNK and have a type as Shortcut. The laptop had to be wiped clean hence the need to use the backup.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

How exactly did you make the back up? What size are the .LNK files? It's quite possible you just created shortcuts.

Hey Guys, I cannot find a soultion to this problem. I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc th... Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. Apparently corrupted files?I am having problems opening .doc and .xls and .jpg files in some (but not all) folders in my folder tree, e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\My Documents\Folder X. However, Folders Y and Z are apparently unaffected. This has arisen only recently. My system is Windows XP (Home), and SP2 upgraded to SP3.MSWORD EXAMPLE:- On opening a Word file (whether from Word or from Windows Explorer) I receive this dialog box;"File Conversion - (filename).doc""Select the encoding that makes your document readable." The already selected button is "Other encoding" and the suggested code is "Japanese". The preview pane shows only an array of characters, all the same.On trying to select the button "Windows (Default)", the preview changes to a continuous array of lower-case xxxxxxx. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Auto-Select", the selected code returns itself to "Japanese" with the display as already noted above. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Western European (Windows)", the display reverts to the Windows Default style as already noted above, lines of xxxxxxx. I am unable to open the file.MSEXCEL EXAMPLE:- On opening an Excel file, all I get is an immensely long string of a character in ... Read more

To back up my mp3 music files, do I have to copy them to a cd with my media player so that the cd itself can be played? Or is it just as good to copy the files to the CD so they can be opened with a computer? I think protected files have to be played on a cd to get the license, but what about mp3? I have Windows XP Professional.

A:Backup files

You have to dig around a bit. If you press the "Restore my Files" button on the Backup & Restore dialogue you can browse the backups. By default it shows the latest backup but if you press the "Chose s different date" link you can select an earlier backup set.

Hi, haven't posted here before, but looking for help, and didn't really know where to post this apart from here...

I want to back up my files and folders to rewritable dvd, but the program I am using (Roxio 7 LE) seems to have problems using DVDs and will often crash or stop responding when attemtping to access the disc or erase/burn something. As I am pretty fed up with this software, I was wondering if anyone knows of any good free (not trial) software that I can download that will let me do this.

Thanks

Hello,
I have a probleme, I was re-instal my OS, but I forget to copy some of my files, now I want to get them back, but I didn't backup them before re-instal,

what should I do?

A:backup old files

First stop using that computer as you will be writing over the top of the reformatted section(s) where there may be files to recover.
Use a second computer and google some recovery programs, the better ones arent free. Give it a try, if the files are replacable, it may/may not be worth the effort. If its really important stuff, I would remove the HD and take it to a PC repair shop and have them try to recover.
No matter how you proceed, its going to cost a few $$

I have a 1TB HDD that's almost full. However, a LOT of that space is taken up by movies. Movies which I do not value over the rest of my files, such as my music and system files.

Is there a way to backup only certain files? Obviously I want my system backed up, first and foremost.

A:Any way to backup certain files?

Over and above your regular backup, you could use a second backup medium for some specifics either by a standard selective backup or using the Copy or XCopy command. Once you're sure it worked, you can delete the original. Don't use the Cut command however, or you might have lost the item for good.

What is the best way to backup files?

Also could you direct me to guides or explain how to do the backup?

I have been looking it up and from what I read there is a system image and file history that does back ups. But which is the best? If I needed to put my external hard drive into a different computer, could I view the backup files with a system image or file history?

Also I have two drives in this laptop that I want to backup.

The external hard drive I have has been used before for a backup of a different laptop. Is it okay to use an external hard drive that has already been used on a different laptop? I have an unused external hard drive I can use if it is not okay to use one external hard drive for two laptops.

What I am most concerned about is I want photos, videos, and documents saved in another location in case something were to happen to this laptop. So if I wanted to access the files I could do so from any laptop/computer. But I also would like to be able to restore everything on this laptop onto a new one if I needed to.

Could I do a system image and a file history on the same external hard drive? Is that possible? That way I can restore the laptop exactly how it is and then keep backing up regularly using file history?

Could I also just copy and paste files (pictures, videos, and documents) onto the external hard drive (in addition to the system image and file history) so that I can view all the files on other computers? Or is a system image and file his... Read more

I would like to backup some of my files on my computer to an external hard drive. Is extra software necessary? Or can I just move the files I would like to backup to the ext. HDD. My pc has also been recently cleaned and has no infections, so now would be an ideal time for me to backup some of the files on my HD.

Thanks, Mo

sorry if that was confusing but just want to backup some of my files not all of them

A:Backup files

There are different ways to do this.

But the simple way is just to copy and paste the files you want to backup to the external drive.

No additional software is required.

%SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchVMSal "Windows XP Mode" "||31a59b7d" "NetBak Replicator"

just do not know how to get system schedules to understand this

any suggestions

A:Backup files within a XP VM

I am not sure what kind of VM system you are running. But I know from my experience with vBox, that the virtual partition is defined as a file in the guest system. If I wanted to backup the system together with it's files, I only had to copy this file in the guest system.

The Backup file name could be used.
D:\Bakup.bkf
Please ensure it is a valid path and that you have sufficient access

So what am I missing?

You cannot use the native XP backup program...to burn directly to CD/DVD.

If using that program, you must first save to a hard drive.

A:which files to backup

Hi fleebee

Windows XP:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the checkmark for Hide Extensions for known file types.

Search:

Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All files and folders,
In the field for: all or part of the file name
Key in:
.pst
Below that, click on More advanced options
in the field: Type of File, select (All Files and Folders)
place a checkmark in:
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
click Search

Or in Outlook 2003, Right click on the Personal folder > Properties, should show you the name of your .pst file.
You may have a .pab file for your Personal Address Book, or your contacts may only be in the .pst.

Do a Search for .pab to rule out that file or check the properties in Outlook for your Address Book, it should show you where your Contacts are being kept.

Let us know what you find.
