Present only certificates with EKU of 'Smart Card Logon' during Windows Logon

Q: Present only certificates with EKU of 'Smart Card Logon' during Windows Logon

We are trying to enable SSO with Smart Cards for Windows 7 and eventually 10. During logon users can see up to six certificates available for logon. This is going to cause confusion for the users. Selecting only the correct certificate will allow the user
successful SSO. It appears that this MAY be the certificate with the Enhanced Key Usage (EKU) that contains 'Smart Card Logon (1.3.6.1.4.1.311.20.2.2)' and has the text under the box where you enter your PIN that says 'Windows will try to connect to the network'
I found an article, below, that gives more options for certificates but these don't seem to offer what I'm looking for.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff404287(v=ws.10).aspx
Looking for other ideas/solutions please...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
We are currently in our pre-deployment test phase for Windows 8.1 and are trying to knock out the high visibility problems that we notice.  One of the issues we've noticed:
When logging into Windows, the default prompt is for a username/password.  all of our users are using smart cards, so they have to click "sign-in options", click the smart card icon, and then enter their PIN.  How would I change the startup
screen to default to smart card?

Also, when locking the screen by removing the card it again prompts for the username/password when unlocking the screen.  So the users again have to click on "sign-in options" and select the smart card, otherwise they risk locking out their
account by entering the PIN in the username/password field.

when locking the screen via ctrl-alt-del or windows-L unlocking does default to the smart card, so I know it can be done!

thanks,
-Nick

I am adding smart card support to an existing remote control application.
My research has led me to the conclusion that I need to read credentials from the local smart card, transport them to the remote workstation and use them in a credential provider there to  perform an interactive logon. I have been led to believe this
by my inability to find another way, however I have not gotten this to work either, so I need to validate the approach.
Is this the correct approach?

I have been googling for like an hour and have no idea how to accomplish this. I have windows 7 ultimate and would like to use my Smart Card to login to my admin account. I already uploaded the credentials so i can use it with bit locker on one of my partitions but how can i login to my account with it?

also how can i make it ask for my smart card every time i logon to view the enctypted drive? Like the drive is encrypted but i want it to ask for my smart card and pin every time before it will unlock the drive again.

A:How can i logon to account using Smart Card on local computer

Check EIDAuthenticate (EIDAuthenticate - My Smart Logon) which allows you to configure smart card logon on a stand alone computer.
(smart card works out of the box with windows but only if the computer is joined to a domain - it requires also a lot of configuration to be able to use it)
The how-to related to your case is described here : Configure an EID to works with EIDAuthenticate - My Smart Logon

Unfortunaly, you can't use smart card if your main hard drive is encrypted by bitlocker. This is because :
1) it is not safe to use a software in the pre-boot environment if it is not protected by the tpm (it can be modified off-line and collect the PIN of your smart card)
2) there are one driver for each smart card, which requires a lot of dependency to run -> not consistent with the pre boot environment
Adding one driver to the preboot environement will require to run the computer in an administrative state to upgrade the TPM signature
3) Microsoft didn't design it

vincent

Hello, this is probably minor bug report on Remote Desktop Connection  version 10.0.10586 (and at least 6.3.9600)

I have configured smart-card  only logon in my RDP file (gatewaycredentialssource:i:1). I use cryptographic tokens, which are actually a combination of smart card and reader.

When I start remote session without a token connected to the computer, I see the message "A smart card reader was not detected. Please attach a smart card reader and try again". The only way to continue is to close the  the Remote Desktop
Connection window, connect the token and launch RDP file again.

To the contrary, when "gatewaycredentialssource" parameter is set to 4 (accept both login/password or smart card), the token can be connected at any moment and will be found automatically by RD client. You do not need to restart the client in this
case

I have viewed this site for a long time, but this is the first time I needed to post a problem. I do not know if my problem belongs in the OS forum or the Networking forum but hear it is!

I am setting up a new Dell PC with Windows XP Home Edition with 256 megs of memory. I need to manually log onto a Novell network and automatically logon to Windows XP Home Edition. In other words, I do not want the windows logon screen to appear after I log onto Novell.

I have tried Microsoft's article Q315231 "How to Enable Automatic Logon in Windows". The auto logon to windows works, however, it seems to disable the Novell logon screen. When I boot up the pc no logon window appears (Novell or otherwise). I can however, manually log into Novell after XP is loaded.

I need to allow different Novell users to log in to one Windows XP profile. Is this possible? My network admin and I have not been able to figure this out.

I will not be able to test any suggestions until Monday, but I can supply additional information to any post this weekend.

Thank you in advance for everyone's efforts.

I purchased my HP through a 3rd party used which was working great. Then one day during a reboot I came across a black POST screen appears, RAM testing starts to count up and then I see and error about "system options not set". After less than a second, a blue window in the middle of the screen displays the message "smart card authentication" and below that, "smart card reader not present". From a bit of reading it seems like a BIOS problem but I can't figure out how to really reset the CMOS and get things working again. I've tried removing the CMOS jumper and booting the system, removing the power cord and CMOS battery for 10 minutes none of which has worked. Is there any way to bypass this to reboot my computer?I love this machine and would like to keep and I hope there is a fix that I havent found yet so I amy continue to use it.

Hello all,

This is my first ever post, usually with a bit of searching I can find the answers to most computer related issues I have, but no matter how hard I look I cannot find the answer I need to solve this rather annoying problem.

So here is the low down, I have my desktop PC running Windows 7 Ultimate. I also have a cheap old Asus netbook running Windows XP home edition SP3 (not much on it so it runs ok).

I am trying to share files between them so my Mrs can access the music on my PC.
So far I have been able to access the shared files folder from my netbook on my PC. I can also detect the PC under the Workgroup tab of 'My Network Places' on the netbook.

However whenever I double click on the 'Richyv-pc' icon in the Workgroup folder is comes up with an error message that states:

"\\Richyv-pc is not accessible. You might not have perrmission to use this network resource. Contract the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer."

I have granted full share access to all the wanted files from my PC with access to 'Everyone' with read/write control.

I have tried many different things from many different forums but none have fixed this problem. Im sure Im missing something obvious but I just cant see it. My PC is part of a homegroup because of my work laptop that I bring home from time to time but I dont think this is caus... Read more

Hi everyone,
I am so glad to have found this forum and to see that others in the past with similar problems have had them resolved, looking forward to nutting this one out
ISSUE
The computer is a win XP with RAID that freezes the mouse and the keyboard if a mouse or keyboard button is touched at the logon screen.
The mouse works fine until a button is pressed, you can even click on a user but are unable to enter a password due to the keyboard and mouse freezing at this moment.
NOTE: originally happened with a USB keyboard and USB mouse, using PS2 keyboard and mouse.
BACKGROUND
I am writing about my fathers old computer which suddenly started “freezing up” at the logon screen, after he wasted weeks trying to get it to work he decided that it was a hardware issue and bought himself a new computer.
Since then I have proved that there was no hardware error by putting an extra HDD in and installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Everything functions fine under Ubuntu and the files are able to be accessed on the RAID.
DESIRED OUTCOME
While i can access and copy files as needed from the RAID i would like to return access to the win XP install and let my father use it again.
STEPS TAKEN SO FAR
I first attempted to run Live rescue CD's but they could not find the RAID drive.
- Bit Defender Rescue CD – Saw the ubuntu drive, no RAID
- Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 – Didn't see any HDD's.
So I ran the following AV programs from ubuntu 12.04 LTS:

Once the determination has been made open either the 32-bit or 64-bit folder.
Right Click the .exe on the inside of the folder and run as admin.
A command prompt window will open telling you what has been removed upon completion.
Note: All usb devices must be removed from your machine during this step, except your keyboard and mouse of course.

Step 3:

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop.

Hie guys, Iwas looking on some postas with regard to this topic and tried to implement the suggestions.
I followed the suggestion below

To resolve this problem: on the remote computer, select Administrative Tools>Local Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment, right-click on Access this computer from the network>Properties>Add Users or Groups, add everyone or any users you want to be able to access the computer from the network.

This fixed the problem on the interim and I could access my file shares and printers. However when I restart the machine or even log off nad log on again, the prblem resurfaces and all the user accounts Iand groups i wolud have added to Administrative Tools>Local Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment, right-click on Access this computer from the network> will be removed and the field empty. hence I suspect spam the disallow remote access by editing these entries .

Any ideas on how this can be resolved would be appreciated

I have upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. During the procedure a screen showed that Dell Access had to be removed before Windows 10 could be installed.
It was removed, and everything else went smoothly.
Now during logon, at the login screen, the system will take a while to initialize, and say "Failure to initialize". Luckily I am able to login using a password.
I want to use the fingerprint reader to login. Dell says that this system have no issues with upgrading to Windows 10, but not now. So how can I solve this problem?
I will like to do either the following:
1. Get the fingerprint reader working.
2. If it cannot work, I want the logon screen to stop trying to initialize and just use password to logon.

Also, I am getting 2-3 nos of the same user on the login screen. There is only 1 user on this computer but I see mostly 2 but sometimes 3 of the same on the lower left of the logon screen. I also want to remove the extras. Not an issue, but I think it may be related to the above as well.

Thanks.

Ok, this one isnt as easy as it seems.

I know about the temporary user problem when a user has their folder deleted & try to log in again & get a Temporary User profile. However, my problem is a little more servere.

Any new user that tries to log on gets the Temp profile.
3 previous user profiles work ok. However, one of them changed their password & they then got the Temp profile.
The PC is connected via a Domain, so i removed the PC from the Domain, added it to Workgroup & logged in locally as a new user with Admin rights & I still get the Temp profile.
I've checked the permissions & the registry & cant find anything wrong.
This is what gets reported in the error log:

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys. Im having trouble with my Geforce 4 440MX, in that it basically turns itself off/the monitor off, when Windows gets to the logon screen. I can still boot up in Safe Mode, but when I install/uninstall/reinstall the latest/oldest/best drivers, it makes no difference.

The problem began when I took the card out to clean the fan on it, as it was making a noise similar to a foghorn. That sorted, I popped it back in, no noise, but no logon either. The card still loads and runs fine in Fedora 1 which is also installed, and will show the Windows startup screen right up until it switches into the logon stage. Ive tried looking about in the BIOS and resetting all the options to the fail-safe and optimised defaults to no avail. I even removed the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, as I once had a similar problem wherein the motherboard (with built in video), refused to recognise the card as the primary adapter and was told that would solve the problem, which it did. But not this time.

Im pretty sure i didnt damage the card in any way while dusting it and lubricating the connection, not that I can see that making a difference to the Windows logon and none to the Linux one.

Its almost as if the card is trying to display a resolution or at a frequency too high for my monitor to display, and it simply powers off instead. Ive tried using other monitors, but I dont have any which could be classed as new and the max settings for the best is 1152xwhatevergoeshere, at 75Hz. And I didnt a... Read more

Dear All,
I am at work and I am now having serious problem with my computer. I can't log on to my computer running WinXP Pro sp2 in IBM Thinkpad T41. When turned on, the computer boot up smoothly to Welcome screen awaiting for password. After enter the password and hit enter. It shows "Loading your personal settings" which is normal.

Yet, 0.1 second after sucessfully logon, I got kicked back to the login screen. It seems the computer logoff my account automatically showing "Saving your account settings" and then it is waiting for password.

This repeats every time I try to logon, always got kicked back to welcome screen after 0.1 second.

I tried to logon as computer administrator too but no hope...

Then I tried to open up a safe mode by pressing F8. Well, Safemode exhibits in the same way as normal mode.

I also tried the command prompt option. The wried thing is I got the Welcome Screen instead of command prompt.

Basically, all options in the F8 menu lead me to that evil Welcome Screen and autmatically log me off after logon.

I absolutely have no control over my computer now. T__T I believe it's some sort of virus that's tricking me but I don't know its name. Would someone help me?

Thanks in advance
Joe

Im a newbie
We recently bought a new cisco e3000 router and connected our Domain Server ie 2008 and the router to the same switch. Now when you logon from a client say windows 7 or 8 client, this message appears "no logon servers available to service the logon request".

Dont know whether I have to disconnect the cisco router which inturn would prevent us from accessing our ISP's modem internet.
Please help

If no other variables in the network has changed it does sound like some kind of routing or DHCP mismatch which needs reconfiguring.

Would you know what I mean If I said can can you logon to a profile local to the client (i.e not on the server) and 'ping' the domain server IP address from a command prompt? Equally can you ping an internet address such as google.com?

I am using Microsoft Word 2003 and want to address an evelope but every time I click on the address book icon I get, "Logon failed: You must logon to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book. Error code: "unspecified error"
My question is how do I access this and add my contacts from Outlook Express OR create an address book in Word? I've tried the Mail Merge but that didn't do anything except create a bunch of envelopes with only first names.
Please help as i don't relish the thought of entering an address every time I print an evelope.
Thanks and God bless,
Peter

We have a Win 7 desktop at our Senior Center. I am no expert, but am the volunteer who tries to take care of our computers. I was told to make it so that the general public could not logon on to one specific computer, as it is the one we are going to use to create our newsletter, and we didn't want anyone messing with it, as there are two other computers they can use.

I went into control panel, and as best I can remember, I set up a user name and password. I do not know what a domain is, in the sense of Win 7. I get that error message every time, in spite of believing that I get the username and password correct. How can I undo what I did, so that authorized volunteers can use this machine, which happens to be the only Win 7 computer, the others being Vista or Win XP, and MS Publisher which we will be buying must run on Win 7/8?

I will do something drastic, if called for, such as opening the case and removing the BIOS battery for a while if that would reset anything germane to the problem.

I really must get an answer, or we cannot get out the next newsletter using MS Publisher.

A:There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon re

The desktops were donated, as we are a 501(c)3 charity, 100% volunteers. We have no reinstallation disks, which I would use if we had them. That is how drastic it is. I would be willing to lose everything to get back the use of this only Win 7 computer we have.

Hi! I had my XP set up so there was no logon, just when I turned on my computer, went to the desktop. Well, after visiting a website which suggested to change passwords on XP, I did. Now, not only do I get a screen that I have to type in the password, I am also getting a "Logon Message" box, which is over the "Log on to Windows" box, which says: "LOGON MESSAGE; The system could not log you on. Make sure your User Name and Domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in password must be typed using correct case".

Then, when I click "OK", I get the Log On to Windows Box, and just type in the password, which then takes me to the desktop.

Questions are: What could be the problem re: UserName and Domain? I did go to User Accounts and changed my name while I changed the password on the original account, did not add an account. I am the only user of my computer, nobody else.

And...what do I need to do to get it to just startup, bypass any logon and go directly to the desktop, like I had it set to do before? I cannot remember how the heck I did this before! But I have had it set to just startup, no logon for 2 years as I am the only one using it. Just changed the password, per the websites suggestion (BlackViper.com), as a security measure, hackers, etc. Did not realize it would change how I logon!

Thanx so much! This has been driving me crazy...liked how it was before, not any logon or messages! Have tried to figure it all ou... Read more

Let me know if I understand you correctly. You are trying to use a program Terminal Services without the correct proper activation.
What operating system do you have and are you trying to use Microsoft's Terminal Services program?

how does one create, re: auto logon to ISP from startup or logon

In know you can create this from "Task Scheduler" or or by draging the ISP connection icon to "Start Up".

I'm missing a step, cause after loging on, the logon to my ISP appears and I still need to click "logon". It should be seemless.

today i tried to install a new radeon 9600xt on my system, which has also got onboard graphics. i first uninstalled the old gforce2 card and then whenthe system was shut down i physically installed the new card. when i tried to restart the computer in order to install the drivers and software for the card, windows appeared to be loading but when i got to the logon screen there was just the background, no names to click on or buttons of any other kind, after furiously mashing at the keyboard in rage i somehow managed to get that little popup shut down menu to appear so something must be responding. I need to find some way of getting back into windows or bypassing that stupid logon screen, any help would be appreciated.

my XP Pro pc boots up to the welcome, logon screen ... I put in Administrator and password and it starts to log on, then immediately logs off again. I do not see any errors, although the screen flickers quickly as though it is attempting to load something, before it returns to welcome screen again.
I can not boot into safe mode, same problem ... and have tried various solutions concerning replacing userinit.exe which I found in other forums.
I am still stuck and am hoping someone may have solution for me.
I do know that sometime in past day or so, the other user informed me
that he found process running which when gogled was listed as a trojan, then deleted file and registry entry. Unfortunately he doe snot seem to remember then name of the file he removed.
Can anyone somehow magically point me in the right direction for this ?
thanks,
Jesse

I have two computers, my desktop which I am on right now and a HP laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional.
I have two accounts set up on it.  One in my name (and I am Admin), and one in my son's name with just basic user priviledges.  Yesterday I had been signed on the laptop under my profile and switched users to his account.  Last night when
we logged off, I logged him off first. Then attempted to log me off when the message came up "another user is connected".  Today when I tried to log in as myself I received "The User Profile Service service failed the Logon.  User
profile cannot be loaded.
I can't get in to restore because my Admin password / my login failed.  I tried coming up in safe mode but still can't get past the admin password.  How do I fix this.  The way it stands now, I can't do anything other than surf.  Can't
add programs, can't uninstall, etc.
